Rank does NOT equal skill. Rank is simply a metric for experience. Just because you are rank 40 does not mean you are playing at an elite level
Confusing? Yes it is.
No, this is a team game with emphasis on team tactics and cooperation. Classes are balanced around that objective.
Costume brawl = duel imho if you want to see who is king! There is even a crown for the winner…
Good question!
My guess would be that this would not count as much as a loss against 5 ranked players. Just speculating, either way, something will need to be done about the leavers/afkers.
Looks really solid. Can’t wait for the additional data. Glad it is true MMR and not just win/loss ratio.
30 points per cap is waaay too strong, Mr.guardian running the ball speeds up the game to way too fast.
Reduce to 25 points at least please :/ 5 minute matches are no fun when the ball is getting scored like this is basketball.
Or Increase the time on respawn of the ball…
Or half the points from the conquest side of the map.
3-4 minute matches (2cap and ball running) aren’t fun :/ Games should last 7-8 minutes.
The high point score of the orb makes this a different game mode. I like the high scoring orb.
This is a step in the right direction. I like this decision.
As others have stated, removal of the ticket system breaks down the barrier of entry for new players. Matchmaking is the appropriate logical step and both systems are not needed at the same time.
sPvP is being balanced for the game-mode “conquest” with modification variables to the maps (treb, relic running, NPC’s etc). With that in mind, Anet’s goal now appears to be to get as many new faces into sPvP as possible to establish a larger sPvP base.
There is always alot of noise with a post like this. Keep going Anet!
If I were a developer, I would be very grateful that there are still players posting in my forums because their feedback is very valuable. Rather than scratching my head wondering why is in my games succeeding I can go to the forums and find the answers. I don’t think I believe in the silent majority excuse. If the developers fix the problems that are dressed on these forms, the silent majority will have more fun in the game as well. The silent majority simply does not care enough about the game to go on the forums and complain. The game and not be as fun as what it could be if many of these form issues were addressed, but the silent majority is willing to put up with it and continue playing without making much fuss over it.
I remember when I first started playing World of Warcraft battlegrounds I had many issues that I felt were unfair and not fun such as when the roads were very overpowered and could stung locked me and kill me. But I never said one thing on the forums because back then I was just not that sort of person and I didn’t really care enough about the game to warrant creating a form account and posting.
The silent majority may not be posting but they are reading.
ninja edit: Which is why they are called a silent majority. Just my opinion, applies to many user-driven sites/forums as well.

WaffylesYay,
Is it because you enjoy mindlessly zerging around in hot-join? Some players do enjoy being rewarded for play which does not result in wins for their teams. And ArenaNet presumably encourages this, considering their point system remains unchanged to any degree.
It’s not very many, though, judging from the number of people participating in sPvP.
Personally, I’m bored as [kitten] of it. Tournaments can be fun, but who wants to play competitively all the time? There is no casual play in this game. It’s competitive or complete garbage. And when talking competitively, there are some balance and mechanics issues that could use some attention.
But if you enjoy rolling around randomly in hot join without regard for winning a match, sure. There’s certainly some of you guys having fun with that. But there’s a lot of people who don’t enjoy that.
Hot-join is the casual aspect of sPvP right now. Some parts of WvW can be casual pvp as well (on some servers).
I am a generally competitive player and I spend a good amount of time in free tournies and some paids. I almost always go in with a premade team of like-minded folks who play to win. That is the competitive nature of sPvP. I enjoy super-competitive tournies and the more casual hot-join at this time.
Honestly, the balance in this game is pretty good imho. Sure tweaks etc are needed but the core gameplay is there and functional. I am not in the super elite in sPvP and I am reminded frequently about how much I do not know about different class combos as I frequently get my kitten handed to me.
So, I think many cries about “bad balance” can be taken with a grain of salt. sPvP does not have an “easymode”. Progression and success is very difficult and you need to work for it.
(yes I know there are some balance tweaks need to be made but I don’t think any class is broken etc.)
Good ideas.
1v1 needs to stay and have its place. Maybe make that sorta what Random Arenas & Team Arenas were in GW1?
Always remember the silent majority Anet, many of us are enjoying your game.
To some of the forum posters here in sPvP:
Have you guys played LoL recently? That community is/was just toxic….lets not become like that. If you don’t like Gw2 right now, then go elsewhere. You already bought the game, so just come back in a few months when they have more features that you do like.
My advice: Have a beer, chill out, and kill kittens.
From this moment i think a lot of Pvp players can stop play Gw2.
Anet dont carry about us at all…. They do nothing to make Pvp better or variety in it.
Only Anet can do is update silly patch that forces people to play 1 map for a week… What will be next……make another map and force us to play for a month?!
No, obviously this is a test on a large scale. Not a “feature” or “event”
We knew this wasn’t a super huge balance patch. Get out there and have some fun! Maybe they are testing some matchmaking behind the scenes or something…?
1. So what will happen to the two team – single round once this week is over? I hope they build on it, as it isn’t the new map that is the best in this change, but the concept of single round.
2. I assume tournaments after this week will still have 3 rounds? Will they alternate what maps are played or ditch one completely?
I think some clarification is needed on these questions. Why not keep team 1v1 as a separate tournament option in addition to regular 3 round tournies?
Maybe someone from anet can give us a hint :P
Im excited!
I like to watch zoose from team Parsdigm. He is on twitch.
Diminishing returns are most likely in effect if no hard cap at 33%.
Well it’s not the train wreck that diablo 3 PvP was. Gah I can’t wait! Anet ladder matchmaking soon!
Balance + matchmaking/ranking first. Custom games too. Then possibly more features later. That’s what I got from the post. Definitely a great start, sPvP needs that at a bare minimum.
I agree with art’s post above mine, he is probably close to the truth.
Osias and I have been doing PvP off and on since the GW1 days. Hope to see each of you you in-game whether we are teammates or engaged in friendly competition!
I will start broadcasting our better tournaments on a time delay as we progress. I am also on the twitch broadcast board sticky under elementalist:
I’m guessing you posted this because you haven’t seen much of a chance in balance/bugs in quite a while. That because programmers are working on Matchmaking atm. AKA letting Newbies playing with newbies and pros with pros. Also that’ll give another progression system with in itself.
.link please? no blog wish list thank
Pretty sure matchmaking was mentioned in the blogpost on the front page and in a state of the game about s month ago.
No not punishable, but it may be more of an etiquette thing to respect other players who are trying to make a certain game-mode. As of now, they have no other choice if they want to duel.
When / if custom games are released, this will be fixed and hot-join games have these small duels going on.
Try playing as Asian / Oceanic. You can’t get a free tournament to pop after 11 pm, yes, I said FREE.
It’s no better in North America.
NA here, havent had a queue time longer than 5 min east coast hours 4pm-11pm weekends and some weekdays.
Without matchmaking, its a gamble
