People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
I think the tablets actually make sense, if we keep in mind that the Unreliable Narrator principle is in play. Here’s my take on what actually happened:
The Elder Races form an alliance. However, three of the races just want to survive, while the mursaat and Forgotten choose to fight (tablets I and II). This does NOT, incidentally, mean that the mursaat are heroes. The mursaat clearly prioritise their magical power – they may have chosen to fight, possibly knowing of the danger should the Elder Dragons be destroyed, because they’d rather risk Tyria’s destruction than plot a safer course that requires giving up magic.
The Forgotten and mursaat attack Zhaitan without the other three, and get their butts kicked. (tablets III-V) The Forgotten shrug and move on, but the mursaat view this as a betrayal.
The mursaat refuse to stick around and have their magic put into the Bloodstone, so they decide to leave. The Seer-mursaat war erupts (I don’t think we’ve ever really got a reliable indication of just how that started). It ends when the mursaat successfully phase out. For whatever reason, the mursaat didn’t record the war (tablet VI).
Over the period where the mursaat are out of phase, they don’t know what’s happening in Tyria. In this time, the cleansed Glint hides the other races from the Elder Dragons. (tablet VII)
When the mursaat return, they look at the world through the prism of what they think they know. They look at the jotun, remember that the jotun were willing to abandon magic to the dragons, and when they see the jotun as brutes without magic, they assume that this is by choice, rather than the result of a civil war that collapsed jotun society. (tablet VIII)
They also recognise that magic is re-entering the world from the bloodstones, and that the nations of Tyria are fighting over it… but not knowing just how badly Seer society was kittened, they assumed that the Seers were responsible. (tablet IX)
The mursaat note that the Forgotten are dealing with prophecies rather than concentrating on the present, and decide to take over the world. (tablet X)
Glint sees that the mursaat are going to be a problem, and takes steps to bring them down. (Flameseeker Prophecies)
Well yeah that thing looks like it was designed by somebody who read that definition, but did not have seen a cute creature themself before.
We talked about this rather early on in a topic that I brought up, and one good explanation we found is as follows.
I figured that’s what you meant. Seems like a reasonable explanation, though it could also be that it was simply phased out and replaced with a newer, and possibly better alternative monetary system that we see today. I suspect the ex-pirates of Lion’s Arch may have had a major part to play considering the pirates and corsairs on Cantha and Elona each carried gold, silver, and copper coins, as did the Zaishen Order in exchange for the daily quests.
The theory is that the pirates and Zaishen took over Lion’s Arch for the most part after the Rise of Zhaitan, which lead to a simultaneous cut off from both Kamadan and Kaineng, which were the two other major trade capitals for Humanity. Because of this, as the new Lion’s Arch started becoming a trading hub for all races and nations, it would make sense that the natural currency of both the Zaishen and Pirates (which were a system of copper, silver, and gold coins) would slowly subvert all others eventually. Having Lion’s Arch backing the currency likely gave worth to the currency as they became more and more prominent (though in all reality, the destruction of Lion’s Arch would likely have done a lot to subvert the value of said currency).

Heya,
Yeah, so apparently when I said weeks and months I must have meant years…sheesh!!
Something about rolling off of one expansion and right onto another has a way of making one shift one’s priorities. Nevertheless, I promised to get you the Orrian syllabary in its entirety and so I’m attaching it here. We’d talked about issuing a blog post or something similar to explain the alphabet’s origins, etc. but truthfully I think I’ve made you guys wait long enough. My sincerest apologies for letting this linger long enough as it is.
I also haven’t forgotten the awesome work of our intrepid scholars. I’m making sure that they will be getting some in-game recognition soon [sup]tm[/sup].
EDIT: Huh – I don’t know why the superscript markup’s not working, but you get the idea. ;-P

Astrology is historical, but that doesn’t mean it’s correct or that everyone’s personality fits their chart (even the complete, personalised version).
My mum drew up my astrology chart while she was in hospital recovering from giving birth to me. She’d worked out the exact longitude and latitude of the maternity ward in advance, made sure she had her kit in the hospital bag, got the exact time of birth from the doctor (she had other things to worry about at the time). By the time people came to visit she was able to tell them exactly what kind of person I would be.
I’ve grown up with references to that chart, all kinds of things I did were ‘inevitable’ because of it. I have a copy at home and a couple of updated ones (which are virtually identical but more relevant to my life 30 years on). I also have a tattoo of my sun sign (Taurus) on my arm to remind me what it says about me, because a lot of it describes me exactly and I find that reminder helpful. Especially the more negative aspects, I swear it starts itching when I catch myself being unnecessarily stubborn.
But even then it doesn’t fit me completely. For example apparently I’m supposed to be uninterested in travel and prefer to stay in familiar surroundings close to home. In reality I love to travel, moved to another continent for a year and now live 2 hours from home and have talked about emigrating permanently. I find it somewhat daunting when I think about it and it can take me a while to decide to go but when I do I love it.
It’s the same with sylvari and their cycles. The description you get on the character creation screen is extremely brief (think of it like the summaries of sun signs in a magazine), but if you talk to the sylvari in-game, particularly the Luminaries (leaders) of the different cycles, you can get a lot more detail.
For example sylvari born in the cycle of dawn are not just diplomats. In the simplest, most general sense it means they’re empathic, talkative and friendly. They’re good at both speaking and listening which means they can be good diplomats, but also means they could simply be the ‘life of the party’ who’s always chatting to everyone in the bar and cracking jokes, or the one who notices when a friend seems unhappy and takes the time to talk to them and find out why. But they may not be as good at acting on that information.
Whereas a sylvari born to the cycle of noon prefers to get on and do things. They might notice a friend is unhappy and persuade them to go to a party to cheer them up – without knowing the reason they’re unhappy to begin with. It might help, it might actually make things worse but they’d rather try doing something that sit and talk about a problem.
And then you’ll get some sylvari who will fall in between the two. Either because of when they were born or simply because they don’t fit the stereotype for their cycle any more than I fit the stereotype for my sign. They’ll be the ones who sit and listen to their friend explain why they’re unhappy for a bit, and then stop them complaining and suggest a solution.
But basically the sylvari cycles don’t mean any more than which god the humans follow, or which college the asura attended. Not all followers of Grenth are obsessed with death, and not all noon sylvari are constantly on the go doing things. It’s just a rough guideline to how they might be more inclined to act.
I’m sorry but no.
He doesn’t really present anything new. He takes theories and speculation that’s spreading through the community and simply represents it. He often gets his facts wrong and is less accurate than the official wikis by far in his presentation of “facts” – often mixing in theory with facts.
I get that he’s been helpful in spreading lore to the larger community but that’s all he does, and it’s not a big thing either in the long run. Few if any of “his” theories he presents are actually his, and worse yet is that the people who watch his videos so fervently mistakenly believe what he says as truthful without question or believe his theories hold no counter points. Because of him there was a huge long-termed speculation that the Pale Tree is an Elder Dragon/dragon champion – but there’s FAR more countering this than supporting. And in his recent thread he presented a theory without any counter points to it about Kiel being an Aetherblade and the Aetherblades being from the future (ergo, Kiel’s from the future) – except that we have short stories that outright prove him wrong from the get go.
If people who actually put time and effort to make original and solid theories get nothing in the game, then the same should go to WP. I see no reason why he should be given special treatment over others who’ve been in the community far longer with far more (properly given) credibility to their name.
As far as I see, all WP does is make those who don’t look into the lore on their own accord get a mistaken and skewed – partial at best – view of the game’s lore.
And not to sound conceted or anything, but I’ve been in the community longer (at least actively), have moderated multiple forums, been a long time and huge wiki editor, part of the Test Krewe, and far far more, gotten a reputation as “lore guru/god/etc.” (which I’m not too fond of the last but meh it happened), but I don’t have an NPC. Why should someone who merely acts as a spokesperson in video format (often the video not being entirely relevant at all) be given an NPC over others who’s done FAR more to the community and to ArenaNet itself?
(Side note: no, I’m not wanting an NPC – I’d be ecstatic if I get one, but I don’t want nor need one).

All I’ll say is pay attention to guildmag.com in the coming week………..
Mercury stop responding to Konig than seriously we all get you don’t like him, but as people have said in other threads he is having conversation and is allowed to do what he wants, as such you can post what you want too…but please stop turning these forums into high school drama
Verata had his own cult, and they were hunting him and his followers. So if it is an evil necromancer you want to play, then belonging to his cult could be a way to go (or you can be one of my followers, hehe). How ever, verata and his cult are not mentioned much or at all in GW2, so I’m not sure what happened to it (if someone can dig something up, that would be very interesting). It is quite possible that the cult no longer exists, so your character could be a member of some sort of splinter cult.
But keep in mind that the Kingdom of Ascalon was destroyed quite some time ago. So it is unlikely that your necromancer him/herself is that old, unless his/her family used to be Ascalon(ian), and then later fled to Kryta.
In Kryta necromancers have continued to practice their rites, since they are still much needed for funerals and such. Even though not many statues of Grenth remain. A new statue was made in Divinity’s Reach, so you could be part of a new wave of necromancers born in Kryta.
Grenth also still has an ancient statue in Lornar’s Pass. It is not unlikely that lone necromancers in the Shiverpeaks still honor the ancient God of death there, even though many may have forgotten the statue is even there.
No and Im not planning on. The main reason he can tell the lore like you never heard before is that he is mostly just simply wrong. Stating wrong facts and Im really done with him and the constant people plugging him. Sorry to jump on you. I don’t know you and you might mean well, but it looks like he is constantly plugging his half true made up lore story’s here.
Wow….
I feel I have some apologizing to do here almost. It seems that a spout I had with Konig a short while back on the basis of resurrection has turned into a witch hunt almost. Sure he’s blunt, and somewhat antagonizing at times but in all honesty it comes only in times where people are outright wrong about what they say, or choose to misconstrue the lore. I’ll admit that even in my own situation I chose the wrong outlook in the matter. I have to ask, whether or not his attitude is always correct, is it really right to attempt to run him out of the forums?
I know this is completely off-topic, but since the thread has already been derailed from the original, interestic discussion to a boring debate of semantics and personal insults, I don’t feel bad for writing this out:
In Konig’s defense, it is disgusting those reddit mooks talk behind someone else’s back (fortunately, I was always disgusted by that site, and now I have one more reason to avoid it) instead of saying it straight to his face here, or in PM.
I’m sure Konig will explain the dirty little details surrounding his unjust ban, but here’s the gist of it: that Santax guy was – for the lack of a more polite but equally expressing word – an idiot. I saw his “vandalism” and it is horrible how much he kitten’d lore by making his personal theories, mis- and preconceptions actual part of many high-level lore articles. Konig merely tried to revoke, counteract, edit, and clarify these mistakes, so less people would be led astray by false information. Santax didn’t like the fact that he got corrected by someone with better understanding of lore, and cancelled all of Konig’s corrections. Konig, being the stubborn – but right, most of the time – kitten he can be, did the same, and so they were both banned. When their first ban was lifted, Santax stalked Konig and realized that he’d been doing stuff on the wiki as an anonymus IP (as if it would be a crime punishable by death). In the end, his smart-kitten fingerpointing got himself and Konig blocked. You can read his pathetic last message that resulted in the 6-month-long ban here.
Konig’s only “flaw” is that the 7+ years of incredibly active and beneficial contribution to the lore society may (rather: must) have eroded his patience to nonsense, BS, debunked but necro’d theories, wrong information or understanding, etc. His aggressive-looking way of handling such can be offending at times, but I of all people know it best that his intention is not to be a rude kitten… it’s become his semi-signature way of handling things over those 7+ long years of being involuntarily – and to his own protest – declared a lore god by some. And that brings me to the last point:
You have the biggest amount of GW lore knowledge ever alive.
I find this way more insulting than anything Konig threw at me in the beginning of our interaction over at GW(2)Guru. Because it is very condescending with the forefathers (Quintus, Drax, Gmr Leon) and the newer generation of vicious lorehounds that were born and steeled in the fires of first Lore War at Guru2 (including yours truly).
Konig’s knowledge is enormous, but nowhere near unparalelled. He’s human, too, so he forgets things and has to be reminded of them. Drax an I have corrected him quite a few times over our careers. (And for example, not so long ago I had to refresh his memory on Kurzick history when he criticized the way I presented the pre-vassal-independence Kurzicks in my fan-fic novel.)
As I mentioned before, Konig is maybe overly active on these forums, and as such it may look like he knows more than the rest of us – which is not the case. This activity is what spawned the thought in the head of many that he’s some sort of lore god, and the very same activity is why he clashes with people just as stubborn as him. Like it happened in 2009 and 2010 when the two of us were at each other’s throats the whole time about basically everything. Our quote wars resulted in the intervention of the very admins of GW2Guru. We were both kitten at each other, but now? We are writing a grand fan-fiction encompassing almost the whole of GW lore together. He’s a rather nice guy and can be compromisng and friendly even when we greatly disagree in some aspects of lore.
And thus I rest my case.
(edited by Thalador.4218)
Pretty obvious actually, no debate necessary.
This is probably a better question to ask on http://guildwars2roleplayers.com/ than here in the lore forums.
I’m not a big rp’er, but I’d say “enough to make your character work without breaking canon” – everything else could simply be a case of your character not knowing about it.
A word of the wise: WoodenPotatoes videos (especially the discussion videos rather than the ones animated with unique art) are not the best source. In fact, I’d hardly call them a source at all. They’re a decent introduction and people (not me) seem to like his voice, but he mixes and melds theories and speculations with fact quite often (especially in his old videos at least), without any real differentiating of them in any way or form. And on top of that, I’ve seen something said completely wrong in almost every video of his I’ve watched – minor or major. They’re good, but not something to rely on solely.
As for a good place to learn lore? GWW has articles that are full and up-to-date as of GW1’s perspective of lore (some articles also including GW2’s perspective, but those are rare and few). Keep in mind that some things from GW1 has been proven “false legends” by GW2. Sadly, GW2W is severly lacking in lore articles, and some are also incorrect, but the blog posts that were put up and the language articles are worth reading.

Premise- Developing a rational relationship between the six Human Gods and six Elder Dragons based on both subjective and objective information ascertained from Tyrian lore and personal opinion.
There is no relationship. People seriously need to stop trying to make something out of nothing.
Six Gods- Each of the six gods correspond to a specific element(s) within their domain of power. However, given the fact that Abaddon, Dhuum and Menzies were also gods at one point, the power of a god is static and can be obtained by defeating or stealing from a previous god. Also, the power of a specific god can be parsed between gods, filling in a void as seen with the fall of Abaddon and is unknown whether or not one god could obtain all of the powers, if there is a limit to what they can control or if specific governing powers work best within relation to each other, allowing one god to control it while another cannot.
You got a few things wrong.
Connection- Six gods and six elder dragons, while it could be all coincidence, it’s also possible there’s a deeper connection. Similar to how the asura fed off the slumbering Primordius, the gods could also abuse the power of a slumbering elder dragon as a source for powerful energy as well as draining them may also have cause them to awaken. If a relationship exists, it seems purely parasitic, and would explain the diversity of the gods and elder dragons, as well as similarities in power.
Speculation of Connection
Balthazar to Primordius
Grenth to Zhaitan
Dwyana to Jormag
Lyssa to Kralkatorrik
Melandru to Mordremoth
Kormir to Deep Sea Dragon
It is just coincidence, folks.
The awakening of the elder dragons also would explain the quiet abandonment of the gods, with their source of power no longer in stasis, they might fear retaliation from their host if the dragons discovered something was draining them. However given that Primordius has shown no signs of specifically targetting asura of leeching, it’s also possible they have no recollection of events prior to awakening. Also, the gods may fear themselves becoming targets, having bathed in the specific elder dragons power for over a millennium, would be beacons to the elder dragons, whose hunger knows no bounds.
Except that…
You’re making up facts, sir, to create a false precedence for “your” theory (and by “your” I mean yours and every third person’s because it’s THAT common of a misconception).

What I’m saying in the first part is more of a creation of a personal library in the finding these pieces. I understand what you are talking about, I have seen the Orrian History Scrolls and such.
I’m just trying to get you to read what you blatantly said to have completely not bothered reading, and respond to it. It’s only a waste of time because you refuse to continue a conversation that never really ended, and for no real good reason – because I think your “theory” is false? You claim such without even bothering to read all my points.
Dinosaurs? Dinosaurs?
I really regret missing out on the first Guild Wars. I love dinosaurs. They’re like huge lizards that make funny squawky noises with tiny little arms and I just want to cuddle them and love them and put them in little bonnets… uhhh, should probably sleep soon.
You know there is a difference between actual dinosaurs and Barney.
“Too long, didn’t read”?
And yet I heard that he ragequitted because of the lore. And even then, he often gets his facts wrong.
Loving a product doesn’t get you a job with the makers of the product anyways. You got to be able to improve it.
Mhh as far as I know he is going to release lore videos about Cantha soon. But yeah he does make mistakes frequently. I commented on that often, but at some point I didn’t bother with it anymore.
Must make sense lorewise without cannon information
Wut?
You cannot use cannon information.
Cannon
That Word
I don’t think it means what you think it means.
Kodan – they seem unlikely given the lack of customization abilities in appearance. Charr have leopard patterns, tiger patterns, Siamese cat patterns, plain patterns, etc. Kodan? They have white, white, and more white. Polar bear people is very limited.
I disagree on this.
Look at Asura. Their only true customizations are ears, hair and tattoo.
Look at humans. The only true customization is hair, beard for males and tattoo.
If we take Kodan, we can have also beards, warpaint, while hair and jaw similar to Charr.

My wish
1. Kodan
——————
They feel like good ground for well designed society quite different from current available races. Upon entering their societies, I really had feel of being in place of some very different culture. They have strong sense for unity trough balance but it doesn’t prevent them from using violence to achieve it which fits in the main game plot with dragons. Architecture of sanctuaries is very unique (in comparison to others) and good to have such diversity with another race.
They can have 3 different paths as other races also: sanctuary born, Song of Final Exile born and castaway. Some of interests player could choose discover the origin of race how scattered because of Jormag, reconnection of the scattered tribes/path of balance, fight distant sanctuary from icebrood, purify Kodan Voice initiate and help to comunicate with Koda. Just taking from the top of my head, but there is a lot of possibilities for Kodan to make actual race and their armors and animations can be same or similar to Norn.
Cons: I assume ANet will not take Kodan as players might think they are copying WoW Panda. Truth is, many eastern MMOs have panda and panda like races. Havi in mind, humans are in basically every MMO and in every MMO they are most popular race – who is coping who?
Pros: Due to their unique nature, Kodan fits good in role of melee and ranged professions as well as in magical and non magical concept. They might be heart appealing by looks as most of people had a bear toy. This also might be extra customization option to be more cold like as they are now or more cute (including voice and moves).
2. Skritt
—————-
As cute and funny race. Have very good base for racial signet like utilities (more power when in presence of other skritt). 3 Skritt as 1 player toon seems like Allods influence of Gibberling. Goofy too. Overall, Skritt would have to be incredibly funny and ridiculous to play with loads of silly and funny situations. They do have depicted good community and they are by far better choice than Dredge.
3. Jotun
—————-
They have been once a proud race and civilization. Player might actually be from some new zone where Jotun are still in great communities and civilized. The personal story might be quite emotional as player’s character meet savage Jotun tribes scattered and have a great impact on him. This seems highly unlikely will ever be ANet choice from many reasons. One is technical as they are too tall and can’t enter most places where all other races can.
Of all that, I see many posts where people would like Tengu. Personally, I don’t “feel” Tengu. It might be nice for those are players from GW1 but in GW2 they appear occasionally and don’t have such impact as community for someone who played GW2 only. This also might be gap filler to put them as playable race so that GW2 players only could have depiction of Tengu race as a community and large race. This also brings fear. In GW2 we don’t see any of their social organization, architecture not even beliefs and as such it would be good to be something very unique. It is clearly stated, they are neutral in all conflicts so this might be a problem regarding the core story of GW2 (or any for that matter).
I never brought up how the outcome turns out – merely that dragon corruption of multiple dragons can co-exist in a single being.
Therefore, sylvari, who die before becoming corrupted, cannot be dragon minions.
So while you nitpick the wording, point remains untouched and unphased.
what would a conversation between the Pale Tree and Melandru sound like?
either the rustling of grass and the flutter of leaves (/sarcasm) or they would communicate via magic.
What would they talk about?
how wonderful and beautiful life is (/sarcasm) or compare notes on how best to protect nature without stunting scientific growth (you know, avoid polution and things)
Personally, I think a sort of terf war would ensue, in which both claim to have Tyria’s best interest at heart but come from different points of veiw.
honestly, i disagree. i think the two of them would get along quite well and share a fruitful relationship (pun intended, but in all seriousness i do think they’d get along well).
If you take note, everything in this thread actually argues that the Pale Tree is NOT a champion of the sixth Elder Dragon – rogue or otherwise. Because, quite frankly, nothing supports it but the vivid imaginations and desires of the playerbase who try to connect things that aren’t actually there. There is a tie between Mordremoth and the Nightmare and in turn the Nightmare Court, but not sylvari on a whole let alone the Pale Tree or the Dream of Dreams (directly).
Mordremoth is as connected to the Pale Tree as it is to the White Stag.
And nothing hints to the Dream of Dreams being a creation of the Pale Tree (in fact, she out right states that she did not create it and does not fully understand what it is! Which heavily implies that it predates her by a long shot).
Don’t worry, he gets us all, friend and foe alike x.x
He no problem. I’m trying to be a hell of a lot more to be correct, when I’m posting on forums, since I’m always afraid that Konig’s sarcophagus pops open, because his misconception-sense is tingling and he strikes down to correct me. xD (No offense, Konig, I have nothing against being corrected if I’m wrong^^)
Wow, that’s the first time I’ve watched some go and write a wiki article to back their argument in real time.
Have any in-game references? charater dialogue? Interactive objects?
If you ake note, I didn’t make any articles (relevant to this discussion). I just edit them to be more complete.
Wurm was first mentioned in GW1: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Egil_Fireteller
And second mentioned in an interview, which I won’t bother digging through hundreds of interviews just to find the one which mentions that a norn racial skill calls upon the Wurm Spirit to summon a wurm to fight with you.
At the risk of derailing this thread, I wonder if there’s some kind of pre-requisite needed for a race to have its own Spirit. We never see Spirits of humans, norn, asura, skritt etc. so it seems likely that if a race is sapient, they do not have a Spirit. Perhaps a Spirit embodies the “sapient awareness” of a race concentrated in a single being, as opposed to spread out among all members of the race like humans?
If that is the criteria, then wouldn’t that mean that just about any non-sapient creature you meet in the wild has a Spirit? Drake Spirit, Skelk Spirit, Moa Spirit, Griffon Spirit, Spider Spirit (you think Gargantula was bad??) etc.
Eir explains what the Spirits of the Wild are, something about wildife, so I don’t think there’s any race which isn’t considered “wildlife” to have a spirit.
Though in Orr there are “Spirit of Valor” (iirc) which are tengu (mostly near the Cathedral of Tempests).
And I think Garm would be insulted if you said he wasn’t sapient! Just because they don’t talk doesn’t mean they’re not sapient.
As for sentient races, no, there are no Spirits of Human, Asura, Charr, Jotun and so on.
Mighty big assumption there. Though nothing hints to it, if there are spirits of humans, asura, charr, etc. Well, who’s to say Spirits of the Wild aren’t simply a powerful Minotaur and so forth’s soul?
Not like Owl’s death caused harm to the owl race.
If only I can remember what Eir says about the Spirits of the Wild (I have it screenshotted – she mentions it during the Protect the Spirits storyline – it’s just on my other computer).
The initial question of this thread was “How does Arah exploration make sense” and my answer is a short and sweet “it doesn’t, roll with it.”
Arah explorable makes sense and is explained.
That’s how.
