For what it’s worth, sadly my mini kinky robot is missing
Just took this screenshot a couple of minutes ago, pretty sure this stuff shouldn’t be showing up still in game! I’m not sure if it’s something to do with today’s patch (which doesn’t appear to have hit yet for reference).
Both the portal and the dredge carrier didn’t appear to do anything, you couldn’t damage them and nothing was spawning.
Just to add to what Nretep is saying though, conditions that ‘tick’ damage on the second (e.g. poison) any fraction of a second left you won’t take damage (or do damage if it’s your condition you put on someone else). So in the case of the 3.5 seconds the last 0.5 seconds you wouldn’t take any more damage than a 3 second poison duration.
So while not rounding (the effect is still there), in the case of the damage ticks like poision, burning, partial seconds don’t do anything damage wise.
Exactly the same problem for me, been happening for a few weeks for me (oddly not every single night but this week it has been)
Bit of info:
I’m from the UK, isp: talk talk, Win 7 64 bit, linksys router. Server: Gandara
Can play the game fine up until approx 8pm local time then the spikes start
Spikes can be up to 2 minutes (followed by a disconnect)
During a spike I can still talk in guild chat fine, use voip (mumble) fine, tab out the game and web browse / watch a video online fine. The frame rate is still fine during this, see classic effects of people repeating the same attack animation, rubber banding, people running off into the distance infinately.
Other games do not seem affected.
Have tried forcing the client to use port 80 instead (no difference)
I don’t use torrents. I live on my own so no-one else is connected to my router.
Couple of odd things I did notice last night:
If I logged into my main who was sat in LA last night I ended up on the overflow due to dragon bash. This seemed fine there (with the limited amount of stuff you can do ). I was clicking on pinata’s and fireworks which seemed to be activating just fine and there was no noticeable rubber banding of other players).
Going to my main server zone say to a world boss, using an alt elsewhere in the world, trying a story mission the lag spikes were still happening followed by dc’s.
Oddly when it first hit last night I was on my Guardian (at the golem mkII event) I noticed that the animation actually slows down as the lag spikes start. Using the hammer as a weapon it is like the animation went matrix style bullet time on the over head hammer strike on the ground (note this wasn’t a lower frame rate, it just started to slow right down as the spikes were starting). This culminated a few seconds later with a full lag spike (during the time I was chatting with guildies in guild chat) and another dc.
Really getting fed up of this, I can’t join in our guild events now, do dungeons etc. Basically I can play maximum for an hour or maybe during the day at the weekend if I am not busy then
Ah that makes more sense nesh
If I had to guess, is the guy who is on Anvil Rock guesting onto your server rather than having it as his home?
The D, not sure, perhaps ‘Daily’ as the guesting locks you to that server for the day as far as guesting is concerned doesn’t it? Again complete guess :P
Absolutely Tobias, I agree it has to be huge (largest) part of it. After all if you are flinging sticks or bullets at the guy stood the other side of a battlefield and then the person next to you suddenly animates a bunch of corpse parts and sends it shambling off it’s a difficult thing to get your head around and power terms. I never played GW1 however I have read the 2 books. In that you strongly get the sense that the relative physical sizes / strength of the various different races is played out to at least some degree. Slightly different example but a few times in the books the asura have to run just to keep up with a Norn walking (which makes sense) and when they need to get somewhere quickly and no golems are present, they end up being carried around regardless of whatever magic control they have, they can’t physically keep up.
If a magical barrier can (and does) stop a projectile be it an arrow or a bullet yes that would be a huge factor. What I am trying to say is even before you get into what magic effect is or isn’t imbued into a weapon, before that even takes place the larger races are going to be sending something hurtling towards you way larger /faster than the smaller ones do.
You would imagine for example that an Asura using a bow, it wouldn’t be them doing 90% of the work, most of the force / work would be being done by some invention that propells the arrow out from the bow (In an odd way I would think of it a bit like that bow from the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoons on TV donkeys years ago where it effectively forms a magical bow string). More likely I grant you, they would invent a golem to fire the bow for them mind you
Pfft Tanks indeed, surely the pinnacle of Charr technological warfare has to be the Cowtapult!
On a more serious note, I suppose from a lore standpoint (definately not in game) with regards to bows it may well depend on who/what is firing the bow.
Disredgarding any magical effects on top of any kind of projectile for a moment, if you imagine a longbow used on a Norn (e.g. Eir) lord only knows how hard one of those arrows would hit, especially if you happened to be Human sized or shorter as the target. I would imagine due to weight it would be pretty much impossible to weild a shield (never mind body armour) thick enough to keep one of those from removing a large vital chunk of your anatomy or getting yourself stapled to the nearest solid object behind you.
Now of course you could also apply the same logic to a rifle, and a Norn/Charr sized rifle weilder would likely be able to fire a much larger projectile while still being able to cope with the kickback due to their inate bulk/strength. Still I think from a racial perspective at least, the larger races at least would more than viably use bows against the other races.
Finally, regarding the tanks, surely a big problem the Charr would have, is actually getting them through the shiverpeaks (assuming the Norn didn’t mind them trundling past). They are so big I would think the terrain would cause them all sorts of problems as likely the passes themselves would be way more extreme than the game play friendly shaped maps of the game world we get.
The whole magic thing as stated does complicate things, hence disregarding it for the purposes of this post, more just thinking of the physical aspect of it.
I could be wrong (I’m at work so can’t try on the game) but can’t you ‘log out’ from the character select screen (not quit) and it still takes you back to that lovely screen?
Seem to remember you could do something like that anyway, been a while since i tried it.
This is part of the thing I love about GW2. Just when you think you have seen most things in game, some detail emerges in the world that makes you go….oooo cool, not noticed that before
Nice screenshot, and no I hadn’t seen that before either
I think it’s something those spiders do to debuff themselves (or a bug specifically with those spiders).
I was doing path 1 the other day, and suddenly noticed my axe was critting up in the 10-13k range on autoattack for a short while on one (and I play a fairly defensive spec). I don’t go to Arah often enough to know if it’s a specific debuff they give themselves, and I only saw it happen once (sadly I didn’t take a screenshot) but I have seen a similar thing there.
Well Skritt are kind of scrawny, not sure you would get much good eating meat off one :P
Besides, look at the amount of weird, toxic, dangerous, exlposive things they collect up due to their ‘shinyness’, you would be lucky to not catch something fatal from eating them.
It would be a bit like eating a beef burger and discovering it was full of drug injected horse meat ……. oh wait….
I’ve never actually tried with an order weapon, however if it is possible I imagine you would need to buy the skin, transmute that weapon onto at maxiumum a ‘blue’ quality weapon including the blue weapons stats and then pass it across via the bank. I have no idea if this actually works, the only similar thing I have personally tried is with the heavy armour skin you buy from the gem store, I used it on a guardian and decided I didn’t like the character so to avoid loosing the armour skins when I deleted it (they were applied to bound armour I was using) I transmuted them onto blues then left them in the bank for another character to use.
Just to add to the oddness on this bug as a bit of info:
I too have lost the various achievements as mentioned already in this post however the weird bit was how I noticed it last night and it was when the Sword kills Weapon Master achievement popped back up for me hitting 5k again.
I was on my engineer, using a rifle at the time! (No I currently wasn’t using a kit and I hadn’t picked up an environmental weapon) So to have the achievements dissapear is one thing but to pick one back up when using a rifle (on a class that can’t even use a sword) was very very strange.
It is annoying I agree.
One thing oddly that seems to help (doesn’t always work but you can try it, definately does not work as well as it used to) is just don’t stop moving, so either strafe side to side, or circle strafe the object. For some reason it seems to make a lot more attacks connect in melee, still some structures are still tricky to hit even then.
Deathknight!
Oh …what?….wait….has that been done before?!
Again, thanks for the info folks, really good stuff
With Zhaitan, in regards to how many ‘Dragons’ he can get ahold of you would think all he might need is the corpse (or perhaps bones) of a dragon to create a risen version of it, just the remains of one so depending on how many of them there have once been alive that Zhaitan or its minions can locate he could potentially get a lot of them, and like you say Oglaf there be enough to blot out the sky.
I suppose it makes sense that you don’t really see dragons around in the world….Massive great flying lizard with huge teeth and claws, pretty much any of the sentient races are going to say ‘Sod that, I don’t want that living near me, grab the pitch forks lads, lets get it!’.
So you would imagine any remaining dragons (If in Jormag’s case it has found some then I guess up to relatively recently there must have been at least some hiding around the world) they would likely be in remote un-populated areas and Jormag has been able to find them and somehow either by force or persuasion got them to be under his control and nicely corrupted for his icy needs :P
I suppose as well if there was a ‘destroyer’ version of a dragon (is there, I don’t know personally?) then again it could be created from the rock/magma itself much like say a destroyer troll or crab.
Oh ok cool, thanks for the info.
Part of my wondering was as I understand it (I could be wrong) that Jormag corrupts it’s followers from living subjects, which I assume means somewhere along it’s travels Jormag has come across a dragon or two to gather into it’s service.
Interesting stuff, again thanks
Hi All,
While in Frostgorge with a few guildies last night the old claw of Jormag popped up and one of them said ‘Lets go kill the dragon’.
While beating it around the foot with an axe, I piped up with ’It’s not a dragon’ to which I got the reply ‘well it certainly looks like one’.
Now obviously all of us chatting away knew that it certainly isn’t an ‘Elder Dragon’, its a champion of in this case Jormag but is it still a dragon of sorts?
The question is, how are the viewed within the people and the world. I imagine if most residents of the land saw the Claw fly past they would yell ‘Dragon! or would they?’
Is it correct from a Lore standpoint to call the champions that are put together in what we would consider a ‘Dragon like form’ to be a dragon, just not an Elder one? Or is the power of an actual ‘Elder’ Dragon so great in comparison that it would never be bracketed as being a dragon.
We were chatting away for quite a while about it, I just wanted to get some views on what folk here would think of them as being as it was an interesting conversation we were having on vent.
Another necro summoning one I love on my little evil dude is (something along the lines of):
‘Up on your……errrrrr…….FEET!’
All in all Asura really do have some of the best voice acting on them
I seem to remember reading it is if a given mob hasn’t been killed for a while, then it gives a bonus (I honestly don’t know what the timer is mind you or if it’s correct I’m sure I read it somewhere).
Short answer: Whatever looks and feels playable to you.
Other answer for an MMO: Usually whatever your monitor refresh rate tops out at so you don’t see stuttering (usually 60hz – 100hz depending on your screen these days).
To me, anything above 30fps in an MMO and it seems quite playable to me (others will like more), FPS shooter games I always like it to be as high as possible though.
Well I have just been able to log back in, not been long enough to know if it is fixed properly but thanks for the speedy response to the issue ANet
Yup, login servers appear to be borked for me to. Someone broke the interwebs!

The chickens approve of your anger.
The way I look at it is this.
80% of charr inventions are successful according to what we see in the game.
20% of asura inventions are successful according to what we see in the game.
It speaks for itself.
Well sort of….
The vast majority of Charr inventions are designed to kill / maim / hurt things. This like you say tends to work.
If the Asura invention is designed to kill / maim / hurt things or not, this usually seems to happen anyway, especially if it is unsuccessful.
So if we are talking purely on the Violence outcome of the invention, I would say it’s probably a tie between the two races.
(This from a Norn perspective between beers).
Oi Shorty!
Being Norn, I have been awesome this year. I know this and tell myself this several times a day. As such you will provide me the following:
1) At least 50 Dredge.
2) A very large hammer.
That is all.
-Kylen
p.s. I will not be requiring anything next year. When you provide the above I am going to be very, very bad and thus not qualify for your equipment provision scheme in the future.
Seconded, interesting stuff to read, thanks all for who have posted up on the Lore
As others have said I can totally understand from a Gameplay standpoint why all races are equal stat wise but it’s nice to know some of the background at least from a non MMO perspective.
I suppose if you are going for a full list then the Norn Racial elite of Snow Leopard Form has a stealth ability so any class if it’s Norn technically has the potential to stealth however:
a) You would probably notice the sudden change to a large white cat first / after.
b) It’s not exactly the world’s greatest elite ability, so the vast majority of Norn will probably be running a class elite rather than one of their racial elites (they can have situational uses I guess)
Perhaps a sigil of Air, it’s been ages since I have had one on a weapon so can’t remember what it’s proc shows up on a combat log.
Mind you if it is that, I think I might have to re-visit that sigil, I probably had a few on weapons levelling up but to my knowledge I haven’t used the superior version at 80 yet.
Halloween, Christmas etc. are only once a year….but everyday is meatoberfest day for the Charr
Just to add my feedback on this issue (didn’t try WvW last night as I found the same thing happening in PvE and my brain told me going into WvW would be suicide):
I had this happen during the Claw of Jormag fight last night. From start to finish I could see only at maxiumum about 6 players during the fight, I could however see the zerg worth of projectiles / fireballs / bolts going flying at the thing so I knew there was the usual vast mob of players there, including 4 of my guildmates (none of which I could see either). I hadn’t been online very long at all and after the fight was over it went up to being able to see about 20 players although I know from the speed the dragon went down there must have been over 100 there at least.
Before the patch I would from time to time get pop in during Zerg vs Zerg or the player draw distance on enemies would shorten quite a bit but after a couple of seconds it would fix itself. Last night it was just permenant whenever there was more than about 10 players around and people were fighting.
Also happened to me later on in Orr during a dynamic event where I only knew I wasn’t alone fighting there again by seeing other players projectiles and spell effects going off around me, every now and again a player would draw in then dissappear if they moved more than about 2 feet from my character.
Good luck fixing this one guys, hope you get it sorted soon
Hey Taugrim,
Looking forward to having a read of the article when I get back from work. I’ve been pondering for a week or so looking at a support build (if I am honest more for PvE dungeons rather than PvP although I am starting to get into PvP now as well in this game) but I hope this will be a good starting point for a general template for me to try or at least point me in a good direction for trait / skill synergy when going for support. I suspect for PvE I will end up with the range option in there for the fights where you have to stand back a bit rather than the full on mace/hammer version :P.
Love your Youtube channel btw, keep up the good work
I would imagine it’s more because there are no rare items at that level to give out in the loot tables (other than the odd crafting material).
If I remember correctly don’t rare items (as in weapons / armour etc.) only start to exist somewhere in the level 30-40 range, before then there doesn’t really seem to be any I have come across anyway. So I guess if the game determines that you have a rare drop it can only pick your current level to give you in a zone lower than this. Perhaps if you were say 80 in a level 50 zone it might give you a level 50 rare although I can’t confirm this and can’t remember if I have seen this happen or not.
I could be wrong, but I was wondering about this myself the other day when i was going through map completion.
Chararcter name: Kylen
Quest: Level 70 (vigil) – swapped stories
Before: A quest involving leading a mortar team into battle and the subsequent follow up mission to rescue recon troops in a volcano (Malchor’s leap region).
After: A quest invloving the funeral of a Norn in Hoelbrak who I apparently should know (I have no idea who this character was) from then on in, the quests made little sense story wise.
Edit: Reading the thread and looking at the quest log I believe it was ‘Battle of Fort Trinity’ → Liberating Apatia.
