I’ve had the same problems connecting, and for all my gripes with Centurylink, none of them have been for anything internet.
I’ve not sat down and done a proper troubleshooting session, I spend my days doing that and don’t come home to do more work (have I mentioned? Printer drivers are EVIL – but I digress).

I’ve not read the full thread either (tldr), but the gist of this that I’m picking up in my skimming is that the problems probably involve a DNS thing.

If it’s a DNS thing, that puts fault rather firmly on the people running the domain that is failing to provide correct lookups, not on the ISP of the end user who’s getting bad results. If you fail to configure a site’s DNS properly, people will have problems reaching it. The problems may be sporadic, the problems may be intermittent, the problems may include long delays, and the problems can occur weeks or months after the change.
DNS results all have a TTL – a lifespan if you will, for which a single answer remains valid. This means planning ahead before making changes to these settings – a TTL of a half hour isn’t unusual. A TTL of a week isn’t either. Some of my poking at what servers might be needed to respond to a login request came acrose TTLs that were longer still. Upwards of 127800 seconds (4 months). Now, with DNS, TTLs are devilish things – With a 4 month TTL a setting changed 3 months ago will still be valid for another month. If the servers it needs to work are brought down or moved before that fourth and final month elapses, users will be unable to reach it. Printers are evil, but so is DNS, and people running the server trying to troubleshoot a problem will only see the latest data – all good data.

With something the complexity of GW2, and heck, with a system that isn’t fully idle, I don’t know if the servers I saw with long TTLs had anything to ANet or GW2, and heck, a 4 month TTL is valid – if you plan 4 months ahead for any change there wont be any problems. My point here is if it’s DNS, it’s up to the people who control the domain to correctly manage changes to the DNS, and if they manage it incorrectly, symptoms may strike months after changes were made and plague subsets of users – users who have honored long-lived TTL settings, as an ISP or institution might, and in that scenario the lies with GW2.

Apologies for the long post. Someone please, isolate the specific failure. If it’s DNS, that’s going to mean comparing notes between someone working and someone failing – but that also applies if it’s not DNS. For a DNS problem I suggest ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /displaydns to get a snapshot of what servers GuildWars needs good lookups for a working game.

Hmm. Looks like a reasonable thread for my comments. Players grumpy with new content, much as I was years ago.

I’m someone who left as of the wardrobe update.
Why?
* the living story resembled a series of somewhat connected plot points happening in a fictional and non-functioning world - the selection of plot points was targeted at making a threat as big as possible but failed to pass the litmus test of ’what would a living world do when faced with the threat of Scarlet?’ Biggest was ’the chantry of secrets would be busy trying to find out about her next attack before it happened.’ Should be easy, since there are thousands of tons of resources being moved about and a half dozen or more fractured groups involved, with an MO that made both easy targets of investigation.’’ Living world my foot.
* lack of continuity from the staff. There once was a game called Guild Wars. No 1, no 2, just Guild Wars. Periodically, I’d bump into staff while playing GW2. Playing with them was neat, and sometimes a tad interesting (ask me about dodging sometime...) Occasionally I’d prod them with something from the original game, and find that they had never played the first game. This made it hard to explain to them some of the great things out of the first game that never made it into the second. Poking around today, I still see nothing to parallel the bosses in the first game, bosses which served not only as a source of character development - you learn skills from them, but also a source of unique and rare items that helped drive part of the game economy (green items, - each boss with a unique green item, sometimes with unique stats, sometimes with a unique skin. Sometimes worthless to builds, sometimes priceless to them). These bosses, generally 4-8 per area, were a draw to their areas. Players seeking to complete their masteries, their optimum builds, or just get that perfect item for sale, personal use or personal looks would seek them out in every corner of the world. But try explaining that to someone who’s never seen the game.
* loot overload. Still a thing: game threw at me stuff for: logging in. Turning 2 years old. Turning 3 years old. Killing Tequatl. The loot for tequatl yesterday was silly, I think I had a dozen plus different bags to open all Russian-doll style. There’s loot, and then there’s junk, what I got from Tequatl was junk: I sold, salvaged, or destroyed all of it. And to clear my inventory I had to spend several minutes sorting through the loot to decide if anything I got had any value whatsoever. I come to play, not to clean, and tequatl left a tremendous mess in my bags.
* ascended items. High tier stuff - Yay? Highest tier items being account bound. Drop the account bound so that players can grind for them as they see fit and I’d have no issue. But as implemented they forced many players into the crafting system for a first time. This wasn’t an issue for me but it was a problem for guild mates and friends.
* wardrobe: Biggest. Disappointment. Ever. Oh, I can understand how it serves a valuable role on the PvP side of things, and makes things simpler with the event items and the store skins side. But it wrecks some 80% of the crafting community, (which ascended items had already hurt), and removes a draw to remote or difficult content because now people only ever need a given skin once. Dual wield the axe of the flameraveger? Buy one and transmute the other. No need to lay out bazillions of gold or hours of play. The wardrobe told me that I’m never going to be able to ever see a myriad of interesting and challenging foes per zone that I’d have to kill for a variety of tangible rewards (training, valuable loot, or loot with nifty skins), and was the final straw that sent me elsewhere.

-_-

Years have now passed. My winters day gifts are now dusty. My trading post inbox had hundreds of gold waiting. Bosses now have a second bar with meaningless tool tips (seriously, how do you read those bars?). Temples seem nigh impossible to open - they’re always open and groups can be silent about reopening them. And there’s new content called HoT... (’heroes of tyria?’). New areas to go with it. New story content to experience. Everyone running around with wings on (yuk. Not as bad as mounts, but still - yuk - char with wings look a lot like demons).

So, do I try out this HoT thing? Perhaps the story tellers have gotten better. That would be fantastic. Perhaps they got worse. *shudder* - I won’t know without looking.

Will the story be better? Wings bode ill - far too many ways for bad writers to use em. But without looking I won’t be able to praise or curse the writers.

--

If you see a walking corpse out there exploring the new-to-her content with her pet, say hi. She may not always respond, unbreakable focus doesn’t often break for messages, but she’s friendly, and when it comes to a challenge, not even death can stop her.

Wanted.
One sword.
Good for use in a single hand.
Must be well kept (polished) and free of nicks, blemishes, or stains.
Must be purely functional. No frills, ribbons, tassels, bells, whistles, gizmos, do-dads, widgets, buttons, etchings, or gimmicks of any kind.

Must serve as a sword and nothing more. The perfect choice for a no-nonsense serious character who doesn’t care about how shiny something looks, only about how it functions, and that it must function without flaw.

Also wanted for my ranger:
A hammer. Approximately double my mass with attack animations that take this into consideration.

"All must die at Wren for the Temple...."

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yamagawa.5941

Yamagawa.5941

First, just gotta say this:
“BLOOD FOR THE GODDESS of… inspiration?”

So, i’m running around Malchir’s leap yesterday, sniping off champs because, hey, free challenge, and the whole time hearing things in map chat like:
“The temple won’t reset unless we fail the defend event”
“Stop doing this event. We need it to fail!”
“Envy one come here so we can scale the event up and make it fail!”
“We need everyone to die at the event…”
Etc, etc, etc.

Where are they? Wren. What am I thinking?

Two things, really:
Loot and Challenge. The events been scaled up, the players refuse to beat it, and so unending waves of spawns in a setting where most players would rather see me die.

And what am I hearing? Now that, is another thing entirely. I am hearing echos of another event entirely:
“Rangers, put your pets away, the pact loses morale when they die!”
“No Mesmer illusions, shattering them causes the pact to lose morale!”
“<uneducated and blatantly wrong info for sake of yelling, trolling, and griefing other players>”

That I’ve seen, temples have had a defined defend event that only occurs while the temple is open, and takes place at the temple.

Wren is near the temple, yes, but is not at it.
The events to capture and defend Wren are available regardless of temple status. It’s not even necessary to capture Wren to take the Temple.

In fact, I’ve not managed to witness a single defend event post-update. I had been expecting numerous complaints to bot defend temples so people could retake them and get traits. Are the defend events still in the game? I’d be unsurprised if they were completely removed, just to eliminate that problem. Goodness knows, even watching temple statuses from the map waiting for the event to trigger, Ive not seen a single defend event pop, just players starting the retake.

So… Really, down to my main question:
When I’m in Malchir’s leap and players are sacrificing themselves to The Blood Goddess, do I farm the unending waves of risen? Or should I wander the rest of the map looking for champions to kill?

Diminishing Playerbase?
If you’d like we can get into a full blown discussion about game lifecycles, which includes the large number of players that will play the game for 2 weeks before getting bored and moving on to another game to play for 2 weeks. Yes, those two-weekers have abandonded the GW2 content. I’m fine with that and I think Anet has done well to cope with the problems introduced by shifting player-bases, making the game quite enjoyable and inviting for the remaining player-base.

And then you ask that A-net give answers?.

If you’ve ever tried soloing (or heck, 5-manning) the Karka queen, you’ll know it takes quite the effort.

Most temples (big events in their own way) can be completed with fewer than 5 players.

Scale wise, the Karka Queen needs a bigger Zerg to take it on. Just, not all things scale properly from 1 player to 150 players. If you want to respect it as hard, just try soloing it.

Suggestion: Temples with mega servers...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Yamagawa.5941

As to statues, I’m honestly not sure where the statues are now in terms of actual function. The last time I helped with Arah, the statues to the north were active, the matching statues to the south were inactive, and most significant to me? Every time I jump maps to check on a temple, the temple status I see prior to moving to the temple more often than not fails to match the temple status I see when I load into the map.

I’d considered and discarded the idea of a Megaserver shell.

Problem being, you can have one map with hundreds of plays on it (opening Melandru for farmable events) and another map with a one or two dozen players (stumbling around Straights of Devastation for map completion). The disparity in the popularity between maps leaves the unpopular maps no better than they were before the Megaserver update. Better, I think to make the 3 zones fully independent, but that makes the statues linking the zones a problem, and leaves me with the question of ’is that temple really open?

End of the day, we can go two routes with the temples:

  • grandfather them into mega servers as a mirror of what they were, problems and all.
  • incorporate them into the new system, shedding the last vestiges of the old.

Honestly, clinging to the old system doesn’t help the new system flourish. It just leaves you in an in between place. I think advance selecting of the ‘server we’d load the Player to IF s/he changed maps…’ solves more than just the issue of temple statuses being wrong on the map. Extend it slightly, and you have a solution for the contested waypoints in all zones.

Suggestion: Temples with mega servers...

Unless its changed since the game opened…

Balth defend event 1 is best accomplished solo: keep the pact forces alive from the scattered attacking risen.
Balth defend event 2 is best…. Uh… Attempted with god-mode or other such hacks that are not actually available: keep the pact forces alive from the scattered attacking risen AND the Priest of Balthazar. You know, the priest that drops large red circles that quickly degen to death anything inside them? Like NPCs?

I’ve no idea where the other temple events sit, but I’d like to think they follow the same pattern: possible to defend→ impossible to defend.

Suggestion: Temples with mega servers...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Yamagawa.5941

Yamagawa.5941

So, thinking LOTS here, temples can be viewed from any PvE Zone. With the MegaServer update, its become impossible to tell if the temples are open or closed to me. I have to individually visit them. This is compounded by the detail that temples have an effect on different zones. If I open the temple of Balthazar, Balthazar statues in Cursed Shore are disabled. With mega servers, that’s gone kinda wonky with adjacent statues for the same deity sharing different activation states (one on, one off).

Suggestions:

  • Uncouple statues from their respective temples. This removes inter-map dependence. Still turn the statues on and off, but as a part of a local event. ‘Kill the dreaded acolyte of Grenth who is powering the statue…’
  • Pre-select zones. Pick for me a cursed shore zone on the basis of ‘if this player moves to cursed shore, the temple in the instance s/he lands in will be open/closed’. Thus, when showing the map to the me, the temple can be displayed similarly. Result: I check the map, see the temple is closed. I hop over to the zone and still see it closed. Yay! I now have a temple to open and a priest/priestess to punish for practicing religion post-mortum.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Yamagawa.5941

So a group of us were sat around outside Lyssa’s Temple waiting for the defense event to come up so we can ignore it so it will fail and we can try the event to get the trait we one (great design Anet) while laughing about how stupid this is.,..

In short, new trait system should be taught in classes as an example of how not to design a game.

So… Temple event doesn’t spawn on demand, therefore bad Trait design?

Sounds like you’ve got an event/Megaserver issue at best, not a trait issue.

With the whole megaserver update, at the moment I can’t tell if any temple is open/closed without walking up to it and asking the priest. I’ll give it time to see how things resolve and whether a working event monitor appears (given the current state of affairs, I strongly doubt this is even possible, as the game UI appears to lack fundamental elements to make that work), but this may be it for temple crawls.

Oh, expect to see me in Orr on Mondays. Just don’t expect me to find many temples to open. At least not while several priests have a ‘Kill on sight’ tag for trait unlocks.

Mega servers?
<insert grumpy cat image here>
I can’t tell which temples are contested or not. Not from online sites that used to do this. Not from looking at the map in game. I have to go to each temple I turn to see if it is open. Now, I wouldn’t be complaining much since temples are never open much…. Oh wait. Lots of players lumped into one server, all given a new ability to unlock by opening temples… Yeah… Rolling out mega-servers and traits together may have created some hindsight. At least for me. I cannot find temples that are not open, so that I can open them. I still need Grenth for traits, and only got Lyssa by camping Malchir’s Leap for hours.

At present, I do not see how I can crawl temples (or run any sort of meta event train) with the new system. In a way I like that (complex reasons), but I don’t like the being unable to find a temple status without walking up to it

I’d suffered a minor lapse of existance in the last crawl I did, and have managed to chase that back to faulty parts. These parts have not improved since the crawl, rather the opposite.

While a replacement system has been ordered, I am told that they can’t just conjure these from thin air. They actually have to manufacture these things from parts that are themselves manufactured at remote locations from smaller parts and gasp shipped out.

And those smaller parts, where do those come from? Don’t ask, you’ll only find madness down that path.

At release, the TP would act on all transactions requested of it, but might require a few minutes or hours to give people their reward. The TP went through much work after release to remove this delay, but I could see instances where such a delay might return. I consider it possible, but not likely. In my recent experience, all transactions were instantaneous, hampered only by my needing to collect older transactions before I could collect newer transactions.

Whirling defense combo-finisher ‘attacks’ do not appear in the combat log.

Swapping to new pets sometimes produces the pet in an already-down state (haven’t seen it since the last update, but I see it most commonly when swapping to my wolf during the end fight on cliffside).

Call of the Wild – might want to retest this, its been some months since I noticed it: go stand next to a passive creature in an explorable. Tap this skill. Watch as your character attacks the critter. Especially annoying if you are wielding a sword and running through an area, as the sword effectively snares you to the creature. I consider it a side effect of Call of the Wild being an (attack) skill, putting you into combat with a nearby critter. Pets attacking stuff too is just another manifestation of it. Either devs make it a non combat buff, or players need to accept it as an attack.

Dunno about PvP, but for Ele the ‘Attack random nearby target when you attune to air’ is annoying for running through PvE, a simple switch of attunements for air magic (to move faster) yields the movement debuff for having attacked something. I could see that, along with Sunspot (the fire trait equievelent) and Earthen Blast (the earth magic version) both being contra-indicated when working with stealth, as simply changing attunements can now drop you from stealth.

PC's Balthazar Temple Wishlist

Apologies, my fellow players, I want Balthazar to be more difficult. But in specific ways and places. I’m putting this here as an alternative to the easy solution of ‘More Veteran Subjugators’

Right now, Balth has exactly 3 fail points — points where failures commonly happen.

  • The famous one that everyone knows is where the NPCs leave the rally point – that escort mission is the single failure point after reaching the Rally Point, and the only one that can truly stop Balth from being captured. Worse, it’s the wrong kind of hard. The NPCs will blithly wander into degen wells and die in job-lots, players may never notice the wells, and sit there asking after the fact: ‘what happened?’ (please teach NPCs what degen wells are and how to walk out of them?)
  • The second one is at North Invasion, it takes either a large or skilled team to take the beachhead.
  • The third one is on Central invasion, the final escort of reinforcements. Between what I think of as Killroy Alley and the Veteran Subjugators, it’s not too hard for fewer than about 8 players to fail it through simple bad luck or inattention, and larger groups may fail to handle the Veteran Subjugators well.

South invasion is a green light. The early events can even be managed solo, with only some risk of failing, or with 4 players for almost no risk of failure. I’d suggest making one of the Southern Invasion events more difficult. Such that it is iffy with even a large prepared zerg, yet still be iffy-possible with 2-3 players — Something to bring it towards equal with central and north.

The other is there’s two final events:
Capping the Ring.
Killing the priest.

Only in the very early post-beta period did killing the priest fail, when he’d insta-heal to full off of his acolytes, when he’d kill players in job lots by fearing them into his wells. Of late, I’ve not seen this fight take more than about 3 minutes. I’d suggest giving the acolytes better healing power, so that it becomes more a fight of out-DPSing their heals.

I’ve only ever seen the ring cap fail once. (Small zerg decided to kill stuff well outside of the ring….) Make the ring cap event more challenging.

Lastly, The event currently only scales vertically. More players = more & bigger foes. Scale the meta-event horizontally too: Pop up risen reinforcement squads – Mini-events spawn at a distance and march on the NPC escort to the rally point, and to the temple if the escort is comlpeted. These can be from ‘meh’ to ‘nasty’ if they reach the NPCs, giving players good cause to detail groups to killing them away from the main action. Target the squad scaling for 5 players to clear them out.

Outside the box ideas:

  • Randomize spawn locations for each of the escort events. They get boring if you just nuke the undead with pre-placed traps and pre-targeted meteorshowers. Keep us players guessing where that next attack will be from. Bonus points if us playeres never learn all the spawn locations, or if they are removed from the equation.
  • Make the NPCs more active elements in the priest fight, such that having more reinforcements has an appreciable effect there. Say, snaring the abomination or temporarily blocking the fire rain…
  • Drop a rock on the Rally point, make it unsuitable to rally the NPCs at – Have the reinforcements march individually to the temple, any one can cap the ring, but it only becomes easy when two or more reinforcements hit it close together in timing. (Player coordination drops significantly once groups reach the rally point)
  • Axe the clock on the priest fight (it’s artificial) – end it when the priest gets n specific reinforcements from the long-march reinforcements of risen.

Crawls for December 23rd and December 30th are called off on account of holiday. I’ll still be around, but can’t be sure of time commitments, and I’m sure many of you are the same. If I see enough of my zerg on I may call an impromptu crawl or 3, just no formal times until the new year has started.

If I follow the story correctly…
We kill shatterer after shatterer — lieutenant after lieutenant. And then another dragon is promoted to fill the slot. One shatterer, but a line of dragons to fill the slot.

I think Elrey is in the wrong topic.

I do agree that the idea of instance owners needs to be removed from the game (except possibly for personal story and home instances).

Diabolus, I am trying to keep a constructive conversation going here.

Please allow me to be direct here:
Insulting the individuals who are responsible for fixing this is#^@%&* stupid.

I’ve worked in tech support myself, and its amazing how often words like these are spoken: “You are an incompetent high-school dropout with no ability to think and you have zero no justification for a job. Now help me fix my computer.” This coming from a complete stranger the moment I answer the phone.

Now tell me, why should I bother helping that person?

After all the insults and irrational complaints, why should Anet bother helping us? As players, we would just find that “gee, the squeaky wheel gets the grease” and become more irrational in the future. That kind of cycle must be nipped in the bud, and either we players do that ourselves, or ANet will do it for us. None of us want the latter.

Believe me, when ANet does does poorly, I tell them. But I do not do it in the forum where we go to them for help with the things that only they can fix.

Irrational complaints and broken logic have no place here, and serve nothing but discord. Take them elsewhere.
