Hey Mike, is this change live yet?

I just tested this with a 240ms ping using Disabling Shot (Thief’s shortbow #3 skill) about 50 times and while the skill activation seems more responsive, I rubberbanded exactly to half the distance travelled 100% of the time. I belive this is a great skill to measure this fix as it’s basically the reason I’ve stopped playing my thief.

I’m currently looking for other skills to test, but so far I haven’t seen a significant difference in my case. Will also test with Zephyrite Crystals and its skills later, as those are also a completely traumatizing experience.

The ping I started to get after the upgrade was around 250 fps […] As for the tests in-game ping ranging from 500 to 800 fps skills triggering with sometimes a delay of 2 to 4 sec.

Just so you know, fps is “frames per second” and has nothing to do with network latency, it’s a measure of how many frames your computer can render in a second (changing graphic settings and your hardware directly affect this, not your connection). You can have either 10 or 1000 fps and your network ping will remain the same.

Upcoming Revenant changes for BWE3

I don’t believe adding 2 seconds to Unrelenting Assault’s cooldown is the solution; I’d suggest making its execution faster so the built-in evade is more tactical and a single dodge can avoid its damage entirely. Reducing its range to 900 or even 600 could make it more grounded as well, as a 1200 range attack with 12s cooldown feels really strong.

I can totally see why you’ve changed Mallyx, but I can’t help but feel we lost a bit of flavor in the process… This Legend had a very unique gameplay that felt pretty interesting when fully grasped, and it’s much more bland now.

The other changes overall are very welcome, although I was really expecting Hammer #2 to be nerfed. It’s kitten OP against crowds.

Ok to all who are jumping to conclusions. If you read the announcement regarding the closed beta testing you do not have to sign an NDA, so you can freely talk about your experience. Granted this is different from beta testing EOTM, that me and my guildies signed and filled out a form/questionare.

That’s just one more reason to believe that these two betas have very different purposes.

1) Anyone who cares enough to sign up for the newsletter is probably also keen enough to also sign up for beta. Game developers like ANet would know this from experience. By combining them like they have, what they’ve done is streamlined the process.

That’s… not true at all. I know a lot of people who are not willing/don’t have interest in testing the beta, but obviously signed for the newsletter because they want to receive news in first hand – as the majority of the active playerbase. These are two very different crowds; one wants to actively help ANET improve their system and content, the other only wants to experience the expansion before anyone else, probably not even getting in contact with ANET during the whole process.

This clearly says to me they will pick (initially) from people who have played pretty consistantly and those who have invested a lot of time and/or money into the game

Yeah, but nothing suggests that these players are interested in providing ANET reports and actual feedback on the content they’re playing. I’m not complaining about the lack of a methodology, I’m just saying the one used isn’t ideal.

My disappointment comes from the fact that they put a huge emphasys on “the beta will provide a fundamental feedback for us” and “the expansion will be ready when the players tell it’s ready”; then they end up doing a lottery sign up for “loyal customers”. I’m genuinely concerned about the quality of feedback they’re going to receive from that.

By using the newsletter subscription as a method of choosing beta participants, the potential of sending invitations to people who aren’t even interested in actually testing the beta version instead of those who are eager to provide feedback is pretty big.

Beta testing sign up should be its own thing. Just because someone is an “active player and a loyal customer”, it doesn’t mean he will be (or even wants to be!) a good tester. The way you’re doing it seems like you’re not looking for feedback at all, just offering a “premium preview program”.

I’m not writing this just because I’m afraid me and other people who are eager to help you actually test the new features may be left out; I’m genuinely concerned about the quality of the feedback you will get in return. What happened with the method you used for EOTM? Why did you feel the need to choose beta-testers from a pool of players who may not even be interested in participating of a beta program?

Quick update:

Happy new year everyone! Now that we’re back from holiday vacations, we’ve got more improvements that’ll be rolling out soon. A handful of client improvements will also be making their way (soon hopefully), that should see a drastic memory usage drop and client frame-rate improvements, especially for lower-end hardware.

I’ll make sure to update once I have a better idea of what release you can start seeing these changes trickle in.

-Bill

That’s awesome news! Thank you guys, and have a happy new year too.

That said, I believe where most of us get stuck regarding performance is CPU usage. Any specific changes to counter this as well? What about GPU usage?

I’m really looking forward to see these changes go live. Keep up the good work!

Hi Colin,

I’ve just read your interview at Eurogamer and as a foreign player I couldn’t help but get excited when I got to this part:

We haven’t launched in China, Korea, Russia, Southeast Asia, Brazil – many of the world’s biggest PC gaming hotbeds are places that the game is not yet even available. We’re extremely pumped about adding to each of these regions – we think that that sales number is going to take off again, and we’re going to see a resurgence in territories we are out in as more and more players from other parts of the world get invested.

Can you provide us any extra info about this? Is this already being actively discussed, or just part of long-term plans? Is there a chance that each of these regions would get localized content?

I’d like to send to the whole ANET team brazilian’s best regards. If you ever come here, let us know so we can all play beach soccer together and drink some caipirinha.

CDI- Character Progression-Horizontal

in CDI

Yulan.4069

I don’t think it has been discussed before, and while it’s still a crude opinion I don’t like the idea of missing the opportunity to throw this in here even though it’s pretty late:

I’d like to see more (useful) bundles in the game! I feel the mechanic of using environmental elements is very promising, if a bit lackluster right now. I love the idea of changing your skills according to the situation and I believe it could be used in a more strategic and intrinsic way.

The reason I’m pointing this in here is that while simple, it has the powerful effect of changing your gameplay significantly and the potential to be related to horizontal progression in some way.

I’ve seen some new bundles in the Edge of the Mists and that’s basically what I’m talking about. Something that you own the right to use and can change your whole skillbar so your character is now a new kind of beast.

If we had some kind of bundle storage, there could even be a system of unlocking/earning these bundles through various activities along the game and choosing which ones to bring to the battlefield.

Collaborative Development: World Population

Yulan.4069

While I don’t have a brilliant solution to put on the table (I’d not want to steal your jobs, after all), I’d like us to outline a way to turn hard-earned objectives more rewarding than those left to dust: We already have an upscaling system for events, so it would be awesome if a tower guarded by 50 men turned out to be more profitable than a tower I pvdoor’ed alone at 5 a.m.

This line of thought would have a direct impact in prime time fighting, since that’s when populations tend to be higher, without necessarily writing in stone that at x hour of the day a match is decided. I love the concept of 24/7 battles, but holding a point – or cap it – when your enemy has a lot of people in the map should grant better rewards.

It would also imply in lower population servers having a better chance against servers with a bigger time coverage, since it would need a small amount of points hold to generate a decent amount of PPT.

TL;DR: PPT should be relative to the amount of people enemy servers have in the map or involved in specific events. This way low populated servers can hold their PPT while covering a smaller territory, bigger servers won’t be rewarded for pvdoor, and holding a point during primetime would be more rewarding than doing it in the middle of the night.

What if Withdraw and Roll for Initiative...

Yulan.4069

We all know we can use it like that, it’s just a hassle.

Please guys, read this. It isn’t about being unable to do it, but the need to use extra buttons/camera movement to reach the goal. It feels broken.

If the idea is not allowing the use of both skills for gap-closing, they would already have disable the 180ยบ turn key. This is already possible and in the game, so make these skills work exactly as a dodge.

What if Withdraw and Roll for Initiative...

in Thief

Posted by: Yulan.4069

Yulan.4069

My point is exactly that using it as a gap closer (which isn’t the skill intent, that’s for sure) is already possible using a bit of camera movement, even if wonky. It does not matter where you want to go, you just need to look the other way and use the skill.

This is so clear in my head that I didn’t even consider that problem; I just want to evade to wherever is safer to me in the middle of combat (which isn’t always backwards; in fact I dodge to the sides 99% of time) without having to do all the camera work. I feel like dealing with it like a regular dodge would feel way more natural.

What if Withdraw and Roll for Initiative...

in Thief

Posted by: Yulan.4069

Yulan.4069

So, what if Withdraw and Roll for Initiative could be used in any direction, like a regular dodge?

The reason I ask this is that I feel both skills could use better usability. Right now we need to aim with our camera/character to the opposite direction we actually want to go, and it has been the reason I died multiple times, be it for aiming it wrong or rolling out the edge at panic moments. I know I will eventually get it right, but we already have natural, functional regular dodges to use, and it would be nice if both skills worked like those.

Would the change have any downside at all, aside getting used to the “new” mechanic?

Commander's Compendium for Badges of Honor

in WvW

Posted by: Yulan.4069

Yulan.4069

I was a supporter of the badge cost because I don’t think the right to be a commander should be purchaseable, but the vote is even better and can solve all problems regarding play time and class efficiency. Can we expand on that?

I think that rather than being a vote in the first hours after reset, favoring the voice of people who are online at that time, it should be all week long so all the server can choose the next week’s commanders. This way there would be “official” commanders right after the reset, and they could even prepare themselves for that. Also, those who played the most during week would be more popular than others who aren’t investing their time in WvW, as people would get through something like “whoa, we just had this awesome fight and this commander deserve to be here the next week” and then vote for him immediately.

Each server would have a fixed amount of commander spots (so less populated/resourceful servers could still have the same amount of the others) and the most voted people would fill them for the next week.

Can’t the vote even be integrated with the leaderboard? We could watch current commanders for each (or just our own) servers, and even most voted ones, besides voting for the next week’s applicants.

Anything else, guys? Can you see a problem in all this, or have something nice to add?

You should also check the spark’s relation with the altar. If you get less than 5 sparks in there and let Simin reset, the next time she stealths you will only need to bring enough sparks to complete 5 counting the previous sparks. I’m sure it’s not intended and can be considered an exploit (known as the 4-1 method), and it’s impossible to find a group willing to do it the legit way nowadays.

But this also brings another annoying problem: the spots after the first spark run appears in a random way (most times just 2 or 3 appears), making it harder to fit the sparks in the altar.

I have done some research, as my group wasn’t successful in beating her, and there are some people also reporting that sometimes Simin loops in the 45% HP stealth, re-triggering it even if you get her to 45% HP again way faster than a minute.

Yulan.4069

I’ve just left a 8 hour session without success at Simin. The DPS run kinda break those groups that aren’t focused in it, but what actually made this impossible for us was the sparks behavior while fitting in the altar. We had to run through the altar like 2 or 3 times before it finally work out, and that was when it wasn’t following another random player who had nothing to do with it.

Can we maybe have larger spots for those sparks? I find the mechanic of this dungeon particulary interesting, but pretty much broken in execution. It is hard to make 5 flawless sparks run in a row in order to kill Simin without a full berserker group, and I think every group composition with good players should be able to do it, being them specced for DPS or not.

EDIT: Forgot to add, the spot’s “highlights” are completely bugged as well. Once you fail to gather the 5 sparks, when Simin stealth again the shields and lights in some of the spots simply doesn’t show up and it gets way harder to calculate their route in order to fit them in the altar.

I know many will throw me to the gravelings for saying this, but a more Diablo-like dungeon experience is what I am asking for. Despite its problems and limitations, they knew how to make people come back to the same places and experience new things.

And for sure that’s what ANET want for the exploration outside dungeons, making us see new DEs each time we go back to a specific map. It’s an awesome idea, and I really ask for something like that for dungeons too even though it has been envisioned otherwise. The DE system can provide an experience way beyond the randomly generated doors and mob spawns.

To be frank, that’s what I though dungeons would be when I was still reading about the game, way before the game launch.

Hey, some nice ideas in here, congratulations. I think the current fractals respawn mechanic would work well for regular dungeons, as a limited lives system could be too hardcore for some people. The entangled paths is something I really want to see as you can check in my post, and while I suggest randomly generated content, being able to choose between killing a boss or doing a jumping puzzle (for example) could make dungeons more popular for different player types. I am mixed with the ladder idea, though; I tend to prefer keeping competition away from cooperation in PVE.

give them a reason to kill things along the way then there will less reason to skip.

As for adding some randomness to the dungeon, i guess a simple workaround would be something along the lines of the troll event in AC.

Yes, pretty much what I think about it. People rush to the end because that’s where their goal is, but what if the whole process was as rewarding as the end? Improving the experience and the rewards you get before getting there would fix all the speed runs.

Also, that troll was the big “why not?” for me to create this topic. If the team and engine can do that, they can do everything that I wrote.

Nice to see more people agree with these points, it’s totally what I find lacking in current dungeons!

Yes, more variety in traps would be awesome too. In fact, I would risk and say that everything that isn’t just “beat mobs to the ground” would be welcome in the dungeon system.

I wish that one day I’ll be able to speak Portuguese like you can english shown here! Real motivation you’ve given me.

Hey Kakeru, do you know Live Mocha? I’ve heard it’s awesome to teach you other languages and teach yours as well, give it a try!

I use 0/25/30/15/0 with a mix of Knight’s (power, precision and toughness) and Berserker’s (power, precision and % crit damage). I actually have the 2 complete sets and add up Knight’s pieces as needed, starting with head, coat and leggings for maximum crit damage. For trinkets, Ruby (power, precision and vitality). I totally love it’s survivability.

Note that toughness is WAY more rewarding than vitality for us because we have a good regen rate from Shadow Protector and Shadow’s Rejuvenation, meaning our effective HP can be way better than bigger values of real HP without damage mitigation. Shadow’s Embrace is also important so we’re not so dependant in vitality to survive conditions.

Hi fellow dungeon crawlers!

I’ve just done every single path and got my title. Since now I know almost everything there is to know about dungeons, I would like to give some feedback about my journey and hear what you all think about it. I am sure most of these words have already been said in this forum, but if then it will at least serve to reinforce our points.

First of all, I love the scenario of every single dungeon. It’s nice to come back to a place and discover all its mysteries, helping people according to their plans and such. I definitely think it’s the right way to lead the whole system, and it’s way better than just repeating the same content with a higher difficulty.

That said, after our path is chosen there is very little dynamism in the system, and for me this is the biggest downside of it. We choose a path and know exactly wich foes we will face, where they will be, and how they will try to stop us, and it just need to end. In my opinion, Story Mode is where a cohesive, guided narrative should be – while exploring, things must be wild. How can it be achieved? Some ideas:

1) Don’t let us know what we will face

This is what explore means, period. We can’t explore something if we already know everything about it, so don’t let us. Make random mobs attack us at random times along the way – that troll in Ascalon Catacombs is awesome, and there definitely should be more things like it along the way. Don’t just put a pull patrolling the corridor in every situation, but let randomly generated groups trully ambush us.. You know, that’s totally what gravelings, spiders and brigand would do.

Also, don’t specify wich bosses we will find in each path. We can have epic moments, but they can come in a variety of manners – that giant Moria-like hall in Ascalon Catacombs is awesome to house a big boss fight, but also appropriated for a massive graveling burrow spawn with an epic escape to that giant door at the end, you know? Like “I feel something bad is about to happen, guys. But I don’t have any clue what is it”. In a related note, Alpha could also become some sort of Nemesis, attacking us along the way in random places and making us flee or weaken him until the very right moment to finish him off..

2) Give us more options along the way.

I love how we can “mix” paths in Twilight Arbor, and I think we should do it not just more often but better. You should totally let us decide how we will approach some obstacles on the go! There is a big foe in our way, are we going to face it or walk around it in the shadows? Are we activating cannons and traps or use brute force to deal with that horde of minions? Are we going to steal the key to that door, or blast it using powder kegs? Our party could split up in some moments, maybe?

Also, these decisions should matter. That big foe may come back and get us in a harder situation, and that blast from the door could draw attention of the bad kitten janitor. Some NPC or even temporary player sacrifices along the way would also be awesome and give us something to care about. Give us some more Bills and Tybalts!

3) Let us use that geography

Some dungeons are so big and good looking that I wish we could explore them at once, so let us do that instead of finishing a path and starting other from scratch. Don’t make predefined paths, but rather let us chose wich way to go at that intersection. We are exploring, after all.

More importantly, like a truly exploration, reward those who go further. Make we feel rewarded to reach that room in the middle of the dungeon and come back home with nice treasure, but let us go further to confront even more dangerous situations in the promise of better spoils. Feel free to increase content difficulty the more we stick our noses into what we shouldn’t; Make us wake up the Balrog while we search for that Orichalcum..

.. and let us find it, literally. Why don’t you put some (rich?) crafting nodes inside dungeons? What about letting us find salvageable items in the dirty ground and loot corpses while we explore these places? What about meaning POIs, and even Vistas? Give a meaning to all those empty corners. It would blend wonderfuly with the whole “don’t let us know what we will face” thing.

Last words

You have proven more than capable of doing something like that before. Some Personal Story moments are really touching, and the Dynamic Event system is so awesome and powerful, being able to interact with players on the go. But more important than anything, you have talented people who can make amazing content possible. Thank you so much for what you have given us so far.. But also give us MOAR!

Black Screen (not freezing) while playing

I’m using a 3G connection right now, so maybe it’s related to a connection loss. The strange thing is that it doesn’t show the usual dc pop-up, the screen just turns black. I will update the thread once I get at home (after 5/1) to tell if it’s still happening.

Nitro, I know these aren’t the latest drivers but I’ve never faced this problem before and I know a lot of people that use older drivers. I know this is no excuse to keep the system outdated, but I will first check if it’s a connection problem before taking next steps (mess with graphic cards in a 3G connection can lead to a total mess)

Black Screen (not freezing) while playing

It started a couple of days ago. At totally random times, in various places (first time in Snowball Mayhem, but now just happened in Lion’s Arch 2 times in a row) my screen turn black and the only visible thing is the mouse cursor. The background music continues, but no skill activation nor anything else.

I can normally ALT+F4 and restart the game, so it’s a different, new problem other than the black screen hardware failure people are encountering.. But it’s still annoying since I’ve lost matches and other activities because of this.

Somebody else have seen it already? I’m using a Dell Vostro 3700 with 310.33 Nvidia Drivers, but it doesn’t seem to be hardware related and just started 2 days ago.

EDIT 1: Just happened in Queensdale, all of sudden. While in the black screen I can still hit F11 and change my settings, but the game will remain in the black screen.

Best Dungeon Build?

Crafted items has the same stats of any equivalent (same level and rarity) item, regardless of where you get it. I’ve crafted my entire level 80 exotic set.

Right now I’m using a build that goes deep in shadow traits, with some acrobats and critical damage also. It works pretty good with an off-hand dagger because whenever you stealth yourself or an ally you get regen and remove conditions, and you can do it pretty much whenever you like. The acrobats are for better survivability and to support your dps (might whenever you dodge, wich stacks nice with the might you get from stealths). It feels pretty rewarding because usually thieves are egocentric fellas while you can support a lot and still inflict noticeable damage.

I’ve started with Knight’s gear (Power, Precision and Toughness) + Beryl trinkets (Power, Vitality and Critical Damage) for a solid defense and decent damage, but once you know what you’re doing in dungeons (wich attacks to dodge, wich mobs to keep distance, etc) you can trade some defensive stats for a higher dps. I would remove Toughness lastly as it scales pretty well with all the regen you get, and you don’t need a huge vitality pool because you can remove a lot of conditions. That said, toughness is more useful when you don’t know what you’re facing, wich isn’t the case of dungeons as they are pretty predictable by now.

Also, don’t forget to use combos. Cluster bomb can turn you into a hell of a healer, crowd controller or pretty much whatever you like, while Unload is awesome to stack any conditions in your foe or support your front-line fellas while you’re away.
