If I can do it, anyone can, seriously. I use a touch pad, and arrow keys for movement. Winter Wonderland took me over 20 hours of trying over several days, but I finally did it. I knew I’d get it eventually, so I refused to give up.
Practice practice practice. Took me like 5 hours just to get past the 1st candy canes, another 5 hours to get past the 2nd canes, but I was making progress and just kept trying. Now I can make it to the finish about 1 in 5 tries, I’m a pro!
I already gave feedback on this JP earlier in the thread, but I’d like to add I am against making JPs solo instances in future events, or at least make solo optional, not forced. The social aspect is a huge contributor to my enjoyment of these events. I wouldn’t even bother trying if I was all alone. I don’t care about rewards or achievements, I just like the challenge. It’s great when I can start feeling pals with the other people who are as bad as me, trying over and over for hours, heh. There really is nothing else in the game where this happens, so please don’t ruin that part of it.
Just had to throw that in since a small portion of people want solo.
I love jump puzzles. The MK one was crazy.. I never finished it but had a blast. I still haven’t finished the new one, and probably won’t, it’s just fun trying and interacting with other people.
I give MK a 10, but the Winterday one a 6. I can’t really explain why I am not liking it as much, it has nothing to do with difficulty. It just doesn’t have the pizazz MK did, it’s a little dull. Doesn’t mean I wont spend many hours trying to see how far I can get though.
I really like how you made the staging area a big group, but then split us off 3 ways, with slightly different jumps. That’s the one improvement. I guess I’m just disappointed because it looked so crazy when I first entered it and saw the cinematic. But it’s just not as chaotic as I thought it’d be.
The OMG this is NUTS factor is missing.
Please please Anet.. if this preview thing is intentional and not a bug, PLEASE change it back how it was, because this is a senseless and frustrating thing. I don’t know now if I want to save something I loot for an alt now. Also sometimes when I find a cool skin I can’t use I will throw it in the guild bank. But now I have no way of knowing if something is worth hanging on to
Terrible change, unless it’s just a bug, I can live with bugs.
kept doing same to me.. just keep closing the window and restarting.. it catches eventually. I wouldn’t just stare at the retrying message.. just close and restart. It’s patching for me now.
You used the P word.. next time say “suggestion” and post in that category :P
There is an easy solution for the OP.. Don’t go looking!
I haven’t a clue whatsoever beyond the dates what will be going on, because I haven’t looked for it, and don’t plan to. I just saw the new category for wintersday on the forums, and clicked this thread because of the title. I’m probably going to move on now to the discussion category, still blissfully oblivious to what’s in store for wintersday.. silly complaint.
attended/looted, alt attended/all overflows were over, got mail yesterday
friend: attended/did not loot/ got mail
I felt kinda cheap trying to do it a 2nd time, but I also did it the first time on my lvl 45, not knowing what was at the end, so wanted to try on my 80

It isn’t unfair for others getting it, they got lucky.
It’s december, let’s say you sit on your butt christmas eve: Your brother gets a car from your parents. You get a new bike. Would you feel a bit butthurt or entitled to a better gift?
Horrible analogy. An intentional move by parents, not luck. You were probably a brat :P
This chest thing is more like everyone was given a free lottery ticket, everyone wins something, nice things at that. Some won the jackpot. So? it was all a gift sheesh. Some people are never happy.
Also, I understand how some may think it’s “not fair” someone gets a precursor just dropped into their laps.. But stand back a moment and think. Does it really effect your gameplay? So what if someone got lucky. Keep doing whatever is fun for you. Stop worrying about what you think is fair, when it really matters zero in the big picture.

Miss Poes gets a 8/10 from me… great name for a thief charr! I’d give it 10/10 if only I would have a clue what it meant without your post
I guess mine has the same issue.. Dezba Chipawee.
I wanted a native american sounding name for my charr engineer.. just because.
Dezba means going to war, Chipawee means busy/industrious, good for engineer.
(edited by Zionka.6897)
I don’t like making names that look like they’d be hard to pronounce, but feel it’s important to make the name fit the character.
My sylvari ele is named Althea of the Reeds. Althea sounded like a good water name, and she is tall and willowy like a reed, which can also be associated with water.
Let’s see.. addicted to video games since Ms PacMan. Started on atari, graduated to playstation where my fantasy type game craze started. First mmo though was TSO, played that a couple years then fell in love with UO, post-trammel. Couple years there, then Second Life. Spent way too much money in that one over a 3 year period, then played EQ2 and loved that. Hopped into LOTRO when it came out and played that for 5 years, with breaks for AoC, GW, and most noteably, Rubies of Eventide.. loved that game so much, but alas, it is no more. Many, many other mmos I tried and disliked. I have never, and never will, try WoW. It’s ruined the industry imo.
GW2? Love everything about it. (what is a female version of fanboi called?? Well that’s me) The single thing that drags it down for me, is I feel like there is no community. If a person is not in a big guild, they are just playing alongside strangers day in and day out. No familiar “hey I know you” feelings about that random Norn who just helped you clear your way through a cave, no server section on forums…. I kinda just feel like I am all alone in this big ole world we live on, surrounded by strangers. But hey, at least it’s a cool world
I used the total makeover kit just for hair and glow, was disappointed I could not preview the glow while changing it in the makeover panel,(even with doing the light change thing) but winged it. It has not been night time yet in game for me to see if it’s working in game, I’m just commenting that it wasn’t working during the makeover.
Anyway, yay on finally being able to change my horrible hairdo with it’s glowing hot pink tips
edit nope, no glowing at night, although I did turn down the glow intensity to about 1/4 on the slider, down from about 4/5 up. Still, should be having some glow at night, and I don’t.

Yes, you can use a capture signet on them and gain an elite skill…. oh wait….
I keed, I keed.
I wish…
So what about an idea like this: wherever possible there is an “easy” version and a “hard” version of these kinds of activities? This way those that want and can manage the greater challenge can (and be rewarded appropriately), while those who simply aren’t able to accomplish the event on hard can still do it, albeit on an easier setting, so that they don’t feel as though they are left out. For example, the “hard” clocktower would be the default while the “easy” version could eliminate (or greatly reduce) the rising tide so those with lesser reflexes are more able to complete it without getting angry, frustrated, and left out.
This way nearly everyone is happy and we all win.
I thought about saying this too. Simply changing the rate of speed of fog in easy medium and hard versions.. green reward in easy, yellow in medium, gold in hard. This might be an easy answer. Should make most happy. I know I’d of eventually made it if I had only been able to pause more to aim my jumps. Of course the sense of achievement wouldn’t be as great, but whatever.
edit to add
easy= solo instance (or the wait time on a fail would be awful), 75% slower fog
medium= 5 player cap, 25% slower fog
hard= the way it has been and should always be

It is a masterpiece. It is a difficult puzzle open to everyone, that everyone will know about, and that will be talked about for quite a while – and it’s OPTIONAL. It is innovative, painful, and satisfying to complete. The high-profile nature of this puzzle means I got to see my girlfriend go all “ARGOBARGLE BLLTHIBBLE” over it. You can go to Lion’s Arch and talk about it.
I love that people are there with you – it makes it HARD AS HELL to see with Norn and Charr, but video games should CHALLENGE YOU. When you get up to the chest and celebrate, and SOMEONE ELSE IS THERE WITH YOU, and yet another person is going to make it in five minutes – it feels good. It feels good not because you did something tough, but you did it and SO DID THAT GUY. At the same time. You connect with someone random. You both sit in the chest and yell ‘boo!’ at the next person to get it. Or, if you don’t make it, you all /cry while you wait. Someone puts up a food fight table. None of this would be true if it weren’t high-profile.
The high difficulty is AWESOME. The high availability (no gear requirement, open to everyone) is AWESOME. The high profile is AWESOME. Look at how much debate this sparked! Look at all the people talking ABOUT YOUR GAME! Yes, it’s hard, but the complaining will only last so long! And you stuck true to the design principles – everyone can get to it, everyone knows what it is, and there’s no REQUIREMENT to do it to advance to something else!
People are going to complain about things. It’s their right. But PLEASE remember – more people complain than praise. A lot of people love this clocktower. You made a great thing well known and available to everyone without compromising challenge and fun. So if you really do have a high degree of empathy, please feel what the fans of this tower feel. Don’t you dare beat yourself up about this.
This.
I understand, ok, so there will continue to be extremely difficult jump puzzles added. Great. But it WAS NOT a mistake to put one in a short duration event. It brought people together, misery loves company, and so on. I love the fact it made thousands of us get mashed together in a short window of time, trying to beat the dumb thing before it ended, together. (I failed miserably, but enjoyed every moment)
This would never happen on a puzzle that was available 365 days a year. The fun of being cheered on by other people…. The absolute triumph of finally getting it would somehow be diminished if you were all alone.
Again, it was not a mistake!!!!! lol. People complain about everything, I do mean EVERYTHING in the game at some point, from every angle. The fact that this clocktower has a lot of unhappy customers is par for the course. I’d be so disappointed if there wasn’t something similar in future holiday stuff, and it sounds like you’re thinking that way
No way I was going to read everything in this thread, first page and last comment before I replied.. MrMT summed up what I was gonna say. So I’ll be redundant
Let’s take off our gamer goggles once in a while, and accept that, like in real life, we simply do not have the ability to do everything. I do not rage and get depressed because I can’t run a 4 minute mile. Likewise, I cannot do a lot of stuff in game because I run on a laptop using a touchpad instead of a mouse. I am not skilled. period.
So I accept that and try things first, then if it is apparent there is no hope, I move on. Instead I’ll watch a video of someone who makes it look easy and pretend it was me!
Too many people use games to feel like they are superhuman, and that’s great, maybe even the point, but sometimes you just have to be realistic. Maybe you really aren’t superhuman. Relax. I won’t tell anyone.
I’m really hoping the Lunatic Inquisition stays, as I have become addicted to it. Add it as another mini game like keg brawls or something.
And I even understand/appreciate “that one part”. We all have different skill levels in gaming and players with more skill than me deserve challenging content too.
This.
I’m probably the worst jumper out there, seriously, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Undoubtedly this has been the most enjoyable festival-style event of any mmo I have played. Frankly, I stopped participating in others long ago out of boredom. Way to do it right ANet!
Willoo in Lake Gendarr bugged again, he’s under ground/inaccessible (Jade Quarry)
Please, ANet, for those of us who sometimes get click-happy at vendors….
After accidentally buying the wrong cultural piece (heavy instead of light and wiping out my bankroll), I thought of a couple of ways:
For buying:
Having a lockout to even be able to purchase BOA items you cannot use
Having a “confirm” popup on any purchase over 1G or 10K karma
For selling:
Having a “no value/destroy only” on reward/cultural/ karma/gem stuff (let’s face it, it may as well be worth nothing anyway considering sell values)
I know I am not the only one who has had a big OOPS. I did learn a lesson though to not get so excited or in a hurry to be thinking about anything other than getting it right.
We often don’t notice right away we sold something we didn’t want to til after we have zoned. The safe boxes and invisible bags help with vendors, but we don’t always have things where they should be. Would be nice to have a little safety net.

Your contest, your rules, and I think it was very well thought out. Grats to the winner, and you, Lonewolfie, are an exceptional member of our community. I hope this contest of yours will inspire more like it!
Cheers
I see names that make me giggle almost every day, unfortunately, I am getting old and forget them fast.. But the Sylvari named Miso Thorny stays with me, cause I like 3rd grade humor
This isn’t for me, it is for a suprise for my gaming companion for our 5 year anniversary this month, here’s hoping!
It’s the reasoon I have always refused to even try THAT game, because it has poisoned the whole MMO world, every single game out there eventually is compared to it, and I am quite sick of hearing about it. And tired of everyone complaining about clones then turning around and wanting features of it in other games.
Every single time I see it mentioned, I cringe.
Of course this thread is tongue in cheek, but seriously, people.
I blame one game for the homogonizing of the entire industry. A company tries to be a little different (rarely) and they get innundated with rage from players who don’t want different. Oh yeah, they do want something different.. Wait.. no, not really.. errrr….
I’d also like to see this. I heard that ANet wanted to keep the forums simple and uncluttered, and I think there are other sites for each server, but I am lazy and like to only use one place for all game related things.
I have posted before about how I think a community feel is lacking, in fact, it’s the only negative thing I have ever said on these forums. I love the game!
Having server-specific subforums would be a step in the right direction. I always have a feeling similar to when you move to a new town where you don’t know a soul.
No server forum, and no global chat just makes me think I’ll always have that feeling.
I am in a tiny guild and will be staying in it, so that is not the answer.
I hope in the future we will see something added along these lines.
I like positive reviews. And for those who say people posting that everything is great aren’t helping the game, um…. Actually, positive feedback is just as constructive as negative. It’s equal no matter how you look at it.
I post a lot of positive things, because I really like the game, admire how things are done, and I feel that feedback is vital to help keep the game at least close to what it is now, since I for one enjoy it. If the ONLY thing on these forums was complaints and negativity, the game more than likely would be drastically different in a year. I think it’s important that ANet knows there are many who want to keep as is the same things others want to see changed, so that the big picture of the playerbase is well represented.
Make sense?
44 and loving it. And I am a youngster in my guild, heh. I heard a few years ago that the median age of a gamer is now 32, although the average I am sure varies game to game. And that is just everyone who plays, 4 hour a weekers equal with 40 hour a weekers, so at any given time, the average actually online may be a much lower age.
Man I can’t wait til all this complaining stops, heh.
Well ok, it’ll never stop, it’s the nature of MMOs, but as one person stated here, people just move on if they happen to buy a console game they don’t like. They put it on the shelf and it gathers dust. No biggie. But with MMOs, the players get so ouraged when it isn’t everything they want or expected. Rest assured, bugs will be fixed, other things will be tweaked and adjusted, but if it isn’t RIGHT NOW, the sky is falling. In offline games the attitude is so different.
If the game upsets and frustrates you that much, just let it gather dust a while, and someday when the mood stikes you, give it another shot. The beauty of non-sub. In GW there were times I’d get bored and would not play for as much as a year. Then I’d start it up and have fun again. No loss.
Well, this is an opinion thread. Personally, I have been spending a ton of time on my armors making them look “just right” If I wasn’t so lazy, I’d figgure out how to post a screenshot of my Sylvan ele’s costume. Playing around with dyes can make a huge difference. I love the armor here, especially the cultural. Ugly? Not by a long shot, to me. I actually have come to think it’s the most awesome looking armor online Everyone has different tastes. Now the weapons on the otherhand I think border on silly looking, especially those gargantuan greatswords others think look cool. I’d like to see more attention paid to fine detailing rather than size, but whatever. Some look nice.
I like where the asura are attempting to test skritt IQs, and a couple of the asura are discussing the process amongst themselves, the dialogue ends with one saying “So basically, you are saying you have skritt for brains.” The other sighs and says “You’ve been waiting all day to say that, haven’t you?”
I go with the flow. The biggest thing is, I want to continue trusting ANet’s judgement on what the game is and will be. I love it just the way it is, and honestly, I’d like to see them keep on doing their own thing and not cave too much to demands. They’ve made a great game that I love. I hope in a year it will have the same feel.
There is a fine line between adding on and true change. Too many MMOs in my past became junk from starting great due to the developers scrambling to make everyone happy and ending up with “just another mmo” that looked and felt like everything else out there.
I think if we just go with the flow and let them do their thing we won’t be disappointed.
I always watch them, because I noticed some show things I miss just running around, like a cave entrance, or a wider view than I get on my character that reveals a pathway up a waterfall or mountain. I think the ones that do this, do it intentionally, as a kind of hint saying “Hey, after you leave this vista, go check that out!”
I agree, please add a section on forums for “latest news” other than patch notes or dev diaries or whatever. I hate FB, and Twitter too for that matter. Why do I have to go somewhere other than here to see what’s going on with a server crash or whatever?
An update on the login screen would be even better, where you put the news. Updating on those websites is fine and dandy, but would it be so hard to clue those of us who don’t use them, here?
The median age of FB users is 22… I bet median age of GW2 is higher, cater to us old fogies who don’t use the teenager social medias please, thanks!
/agree Enable preview in TP please!
It would work for about 5 minutes til the goldsellers caught on and started typing with spaces like C H E A P! F A S T! Best idea for stopping em is to have a dedicated report monitor who slams down the ban hammer soon as at least 10 reports come in on an account.
Bumping this thread rather than starting a new one. I am soooooo for a global channel. The naysayers saying it would become a mess from goldsellers and guild recruiters I guess have not had the same experiences I have from a global chat channel. Yes, it does get ugly at times, but that’s when you filter it off. Coming from LOTRO, their glff channel (global looking for fellowship) was an excellent way of getting to know fellow players outside of grouping. The majority of the chat (on my server anyway) was looking for groups and people asking questions, getting advice. Oh, and much chatter about nothing important Spamming was nonexistant in it.
The ONE thing I feel that is missing in GW2 is a sense of community. For those of you in the huge guilds, I suppose this isn’t an issue, but I like my tiny little guild and won’t change.
I like the idea of it only being available to lvl 20+ characters, I guess, as a minor safeguard against gold sellers, hopefully by the time they hit 20 they are banned.
Community may possibly be the #1 thing that keeps people in a game. M chat just doesn’t cut it, you don’t see the same people day after day and feel like you know them.
In the end, if people hate the global channel, they can filter it off. Everyone is happy. An easy implementation to the game (I think?)
(edited by Zionka.6897)
What I have been seeing a lot in this thread as well as the majority of threads, is people want to play the same way in every game out there.
I am a hard core player, who has played every day since head start, 3-5 hours after work on weeknights, then 12 hours minimum every sat and sunday (no life, whatever). I have a lvl 58 as my highest character. I’ve been hopping around on the various classes, exploring them all, most of those are lvl 20-30.
Rushing to end game why? Why do people feel driven to do that in every single game? Rushing isn’t just power leveling, it’s skipping over stuff that doesn’t “advance” your character (keg brawling, anyone?) Try stuff that’s just for fun. You might, I dunno… have FUN? GW2 has so much to offer and explore on the way there, I just don’t get it.
Different games should be experienced differently. Isn’t that kinda the point of trying them out? You try a new game probably because you’re burned out on the one you were playing last, then get disappointed because it’s not giving you the same things and activities as the old one.
End game has always been just that to me anyway… I get to the end, then lose interest. My capped characters become little more than mules. So I take my sweet time getting there. The enjoyment is in the journey.
(edited by Zionka.6897)
My very very most favorite class (profession) I played in my history of MMOs was a caster/bard hybrid in UO. You could make mobs fight eachother while you burned them down, but if you missed, hoo boy you were in trouble. A real russian roulette. The bard could also tame a pet (that could be the tank you ordered the mob to attack). Having another pet class, where they are limited to only one pet unlike a ranger, I think would be a big hit. To avoid weapon issues, mabe have them make their “notes” by clanging together their hammer and dagger.. warhorns are a given.
Maybe call it, I dunno.. a Muse?
Second idea, since there are only 2 heavy armor professions currently and 3 each of the other two, bring back the Paragon from GW
(edited by Zionka.6897)
I use a touchpad on a laptop, so really, moving the camera is an ordeal.. what I’d like to see is “terrain camera movement” option.. where it will automatically swivel up or down. It was a nice option in my last game, because since it’s such a bother to maneuver the camera angle for me (I have to actually stop my character and do it), I usually don’t.. so off I go, running up hills smack into mobs I don’t see ahead of time, or go plunging off a cliff where I thought a path was. I’m such a klutz !
OK so it’s not camera smoothing and should go in the suggestion forum I guess, but I saw the camera smoothing thread and went.. huh. I never noticed :P
I guess like every single one of the 1000’s of mmos out there, it can’t make everyone happy. I think it has hit the nail on the head for what I want in a game. Not just the combat, but every other aspect. Obviously it’s not going to please everyone.
Maybe it’s not anything original or special to you, maybe other games have better or similar combat, but none I have experienced have the whole package.
Anyway, I just posted here to try and shed a different, positive light on stuff someone sounded bummed about, not to argue. Safe Paths!
Again. I wish people could understand this IS action.. Moreso than having 50 skills. Pressing a ton of buttons does not a fight make. Having 50 skills is nothing more than thinking about what buttons to push next.. That is NOT action fighting. GW2 is redefining that misconception.
edit to add and as far as individualism goes, I have played games with tons of hotbar skills, and each class pretty much was a carbon copy of same class across the board. Individualism is defined by methods and skill IMO. And doing it with flair It’s not what you got, it’s how you use it!
(edited by Zionka.6897)
I look at it this way. More buttons= more button mashing. Fewer buttons make me have to fight more like.. I’d really fight if it was real. I have to think about positioning, movement, what will work best with the mob I am up against. So far, engineer is my favorite class because of the need to really think. I put all turrets on my utility slots because yeah, engineers don’t have beans for damage. Using the equipment helps a ton.
That’s getting off the subject, but just a quick example of how to get into a different frame of mind about how combat is in your head. This is much more realistic, and more challenging, and most of all more rewarding once you “get it” You feel like you’re actually fighting, it becomes more fun, and therefore pulls you in.
I do totally get where you’re coming from though. You just gotta think out of the box you’ve been trapped in!
Ditto. Love it. I usually wait 6 months after a release to play because bugs are expected. Even the smoothest launch will have bugs. I was too excited for this one though to wait!
Yes, they got it right. It matters to them. It shows. The non-competing between players, the endless things to be discovered by exploring every nook and cranny, the amazing voice acting work put into it, and on, and on………..
I can handle the mild annoyance at things bugged or not quite right here and there, because I know it will only get better. It’s already great, so can’t wait for the future!
Thank you ArenaNet
I tried the keg brawl for the first time today, and was instantly hooked.. It’s sooooo fun! But yes, for the life of me I couldn’t figgure out how other people were tossing the keg so far.. very frustrating. Nothing I did on the practice field accomplished it, so I resorted to looking it up. Yuck. Please fix this issue, it makes it not so fun. Next to impossible to stop the guys who do it once they have the keg, and intercepting/causing fumbles is where the fun is at!
Plus, I use a laptop with touchpad, and moving the camera at will is pretty darn tough. Maybe if I had a chance to stand there for 5 seconds to move it up… But seriously, it’s much funner using the skills as they were intended.
I enjoy playing healing classes in other games (and everything else), and I have found an ele traited deep in water with staff equipped is pretty effective in this role. The great thing is, I have the option to go dps as well, for when I am soloing, or for whenever the mood hits me. I would never want them to change the professions or add a strictly “healing” class. I think they did everything right with professions personally. The freedom of a build! Experiment some, this way is much better.
Downscaling to the zone is exactly what they did right.
Agree 100%
There are dozens of things I love about GW2 because they are so different from past experiences.
In other games, the only time I’d see high levels in low level zones, was to ‘slayer deed’ (thank goodness I don’t have that grind here) If you like to spend your gaming time doing the roflstomp thing, well, maybe this one isn’t for you. I love never missing out on a zone because I outlevelled it. This way, I experience the entire game the way it was meant to be.
And as others have said, being, say, a level 40 in a 20ish zone is far easier than when you were 20. If you have to constantly fight for your life and are struggling, you’re doing something wrong (no offense).
For me, it’s every opening voiceover, on every character, that is missing. I am sorry I can’t remember when this first started, only that in the first week or two of game play, none were missing. Now every starting voice is missing, as well as all of the voiceovers specifically of the.. um… tree queen lady in The Grove (my memory of names is horrid)
Adding my vote for a mount. Nothing flashy, just a sturdy utility steed. I would still use waypoints for long distances, everyone would. But riding a horse, even if it only gives a 10-20% speed buff, would add to the immersion and encourage experiencing the wonderful stuff around us. Hopping from WP to WP takes away from this.
I am all for uniqueness in a mmo, it’s one reason I feel like I have found my “perfect” game. I love it here! But riding horses to me is as standard for a game as combat itself. (UO, EQ2, and LOTRO. No WoW kool-ade for me) It’s the only thing I feel is missing here.
Again, I feel the addition would not stop use of WPs which help keep economy underinflated as money sinks. We are all about convenience. All mounts would do is add another enjoyable thing to game.
No mounted combat, definitely! And none in WvW, none in cities. A stable at the city gates would be kinda cool, but I don’t want to be stepping in horse manure as I go to the bank or taverns.
If a Norn would never ride a horse, make a verson for them as a pack horse. Maybe all horses as a pack animal only, if you are so against a mount. I just want to see horsies!
Make them fat and slow, just make them! /smile
