Control effects are cool and all, until you fight a champ/legend.
Then you can switch to Dagger/Pistol. Daredevil is not a specialization in a vacuum, you are not required or forced to use staff/physicals at all times.
So…Isn’t there trait that gives 10% more damage just for having a staff?
This will need to be tested extensively.
Hopefully you guys don’t get the QQ chrono did.
Specifically the trait grants 10% more damage while wielding a staff WHEN endurance is not full. Which, honestly, might as well be a 100% uptime in combat situations.
Could Inspiring Reinforcement act like wall skills? Allies that run over it get X stacks of stability, and enemies that run over it get X stacks of weakness or something.
I don’t think we’ll see zergs turtling up in keeps and towers with this upcoming change- after all, as far as we know, defending/escorting your objectives still doesn’t reward a player as much as running around flipping other servers’ objectives. I can, however, see it hurting servers without a night crew; imagine waking up and seeing your BL is not only entirely a different color, but every objective has been fully upgraded and fortified (and sieged since you don’t have to worry about wasting supply on upgrades anymore) on top of that. That could be a pretty hefty morale breaker.
To be honest I’m not sure if this is actually a bug, or maybe some kind of oversight, or just working as intended. But I made myself a set of Radiance runes to use on an aura elementalist. I notice that while the light aura my heal skill activates thanks to the 4 set bonus DOES trigger aura trait effects like Zephyr’s Boon, it doesn’t seem to get shared with allies via Powerful Aura. Is this intentional?
Anyone know if buying gems is level gated? I only ask because my latest engineer just hit level 27, and I was apparently finally able to unlock my Currency Exchange in the TP interface.
I dunno if it’s been said before, or if it’s as important as some of the other stuff mentioned, but I gotta get this off my chest: The writers SERIOUSLY need to learn subtlety, especially when it comes to writing relationships. Of course, I’m talking about Marjory and Kasmeer, and how we were hit on the head over and over about how they were SOOOO LOVEY DOVEY with each other. Now I’m not really saying that the character were bad, not at all. But after a year of this Living Story, the fact that they were lesbians is really the only thing about them that sticks out to me anymore. They spent most if not all of their appearances making goo-goo eyes at each other and throwing innuendo about while the world fell apart, and I just don’t feel that makes for very compelling characters, especially characters that I assume we’ll be interacting with more in the future.
I like her especially the personality they gave her.reminds me of harely quinn
If I may say, that’s the problem! The way her character was introduced, she shouldn’t just be Harley Quinn, she should have been the Joker. Her “insanity” just feels like an excuse for her to say random yet cutesy quips, and rather than becoming some kind of nemesis, she feels more like some recurring secondary villain that exists only to be beaten and run off, angrily shaking her fist and muttering some nonsense about “next time”.
Granted, Scarlet does seem to have a plan. But it’s been months, and we still know jack about it, so I, personally, am finding it extremely hard to continue to be invested in the character. I don’t like Scarlet, for now at least- I think it’s possible for it to be turned around. But to be honest, I’m not very optimistic about it.
Is that so? Okay great, thank you for the quick answer.
I’m curious if the chance to proc on criticals is the only thing that separates the different tiers of Sigil of Fire from each other. Specifically, does the Superior Sigil do far more damage on flame burst than the Major?
They work the same way as the skins from Moto, except for the fact that they drop from chests, and are not bound in anyway, meaning you can sell them on the TP.
It’s the pet class because the core mechanic is a pet. Arenanet has said it’s the pet class. If you roll a ranger in GW2, you have to expect that you’re going to be using a pet! They don’t need to get rid of the pet, they need to improve it! Stop trying to cut off the arm when all you need is a splint!
Arenanet will never reward the players for ignoring a core mechanic of their class like this, so there’s really no reason to worry about that. What they should be (and hopefull are) focusing on is making the pet easier to work with, since that seems to be the main issue here- that pets, despite the F1-4 skills, are still hard to control and rely on for damage.
I’m very curious; why does the Snapdragon armor have these all these orange bits on every armor that can’t be dyed? I love the armor, but it’s hard to REALLY love it because I feel like I’m getting pigeonholed into certain dye schemes for the sake of not having the undyeable bits stand out.
So, does no one use Withdraw? I’m personally in love with it. It’s an evade, it cleanses slowdowns, it’s on a 15 second (!) cooldown… The only downsides I can see to it is that it might not heal as much as the other heal skills, and that it doesn’t get as many trait benefits like the others would.
I think the Incinerator is pretty good, probably one of the few current legendaries I’d care to hunt down if I wasn’t already unmotivated by the insane material costs. Bolt’s nice-looking too, but I hear the sound can get on your nerves after a while.
The question I have is; if the Nature Ritual’s trade off is that you can kill the spirit, what’s the warrior’s banner trade off? Far as I know, it can’t be killed, doesn’t have a % to proc effect tied to its benefits, and can be moved around, even without traits. I know they’re not exactly the same skill type, so it’s not a real fair comparison, but Arenanet HAS to do something about spirits because they suffer from issues that most AI companions do.
Either make the spirits bulkier/invulnerable to damage so they can get their effects off more consistently, or buff the effects they grant to make up for how terribly flimsy they are.
I just don’t think it makes much sense to keep the root. No other weapon really requires you to turn off AA to make it viable. You can say that it has a high skill cap all you want, but the fact remains that it’s really an outlier, and for a lot of people, nigh-unusable.
Some people say it’s a bug, I say it’s the price you pay for having an auto-cripple with the kick part of the chain (although a heavy price at that).
JonPeters? Anyone? Bueller? Bueellleeerrrrrr?
Quite a heavy price one pays, much like the one Thieves deal with in their own attack chain that can cripple!
… oh. Hmm, wait a second here, something doesn’t sound quite right. Oh that’s it! Thief doesn’t have to pay the same price to cripple foes.
Signet of Renewal? I dunno, it’s dodgy. Yeah it breaks stun, but unless your pet is nearby, your conditions aren’t going anywhere.
Rangers downed skills are actually pretty great if you think about it:
We have an aoe interrupt, very useful.
I dunno, I have to disagree with that. In PvE mobs are going to gang up and DPS you down , shrugging off the one second daze that it applies. And in WvW or sPvP, unless you have an ally nearby that’s actively defending and reviving you, that one second daze is just a minor speed bump for opponents who are looking to Finish you off. It doesn’t last long enough for you to activate Lick Wounds (nor is Lick Wounds really powerful enough to save you from that kind of situation, either), and once the daze wears off, the enemy is right where they were before: standing directly over you ready to plant a flag in your lung.
Maybe if the landlord had promised everyone on the fifth floor heated bathroom floors and fixing the bad seals the windows have, but then got them all garbage disposals. I mean yeah, I guess that’s nice and helpful, but what about the other, nicer stuff you said you were getting?
Could be nice if Thunderclap was replaced with Dust Trap. Feels like it’d be more useful in staving off death.
Arenanet, tell me we can help her! First I thought it was kind of funny how she would talk to her dummies. But then she started sobbing, and it all kind of went… yeah.
Poor, poor Owain. At least the omelets are tasty.
I think it’s hilarious that Arenanet couldn’t even get the Box of Nails’ AoE marker working right.
Taym, well aware of the pet problem. They don’t hold aggro, cast times are too long, they run amuck if not leashed, and the moving target issue is annoying.
However, as pissed off as I am with this last patch. Ranger is my only lvl 80 and I’m going to try and have some fun with the new content with my useless skills.
Have they fixed the trap “bug”?? Does anyone know? I haven’t logged on since the patch.
They apparently fixed it in a patch last night, though I haven’t been on to confirm it personally.
I’m not sure how much of the Ranger’s damage potential is tied up in the pet, but it makes sense from a “story” standpoint. The pet is your partner, so it makes sense that it’d contribute a lot to your efforts. But on the other hand, it’s obvious that people rail against it because they’d prefer to control as much of that potential as they can, without deal with AI that is, more often than not, not intelligent at all. Why should a dog that’s dumber than a bag of rocks embedded with nails keep that damage away from them?
I still like how they implemented pets, I like the weapon skills that benefit pets. I’m not a fan of the pet shouts, save for SnR, and I think the damage spread between pet and ranger could be made to lean more on the ranger. And of course make it so that pets aren’t so easily stymied by a meandering opponent.
Guys, it is rare for a representative of the company to give us any kind of information about what may be coming up as far as changes, tweaks , buffs and nerfs. This is why. People set expectations way to high and begin frothing at the mouth (or I guess the fingers) when what comes to pass falls shy of those expectations.
After the full blown meltdown some people seem to have had, why would they ever want to slip us tidbits of info again? snip
I’m sorry, but it is NOT the player’s fault that Jon came to us before a big patch was supposed to hit, telling us that we were getting significant changes, only to find that when the patch hit, that the changes were… not significant at all. He and his team has to shoulder some kind of blame for working us up like that.
Yeah, I thought that was weird. I guess it makes it better than it used to be, at the least. And it could be worse!
They could have been like engineer kits.
I do like my Drakes, and this one is probably going to be a favorite! Still, don’t drakes have two skills that are bugged up? Well, not that it matters; with the fragility of most pets, I generally just use my drakes for their F2 then call them back to sit around anyway.
The greatsword buff to skill 4 is actually probably the most significant part of our overall disappointing part in the patch. More mobility is always welcome, and it means that now we can block rapid range attacks, which is great.
All accurate points loki, but I think rangers should be given the option to remove pets. The main reason I think rangers don’t want to use their pet in the current state is because of their functionality, or lack of..
So don’t do a Bioware and just throw the thing out entirely because it’s got some problems. Get it fixed. I’m not stupid, I know the pets have problems but that’s hardly justification for removing them entirely.
Agreed. I’ve personally had a beef with people who suggest a permanent stow with a stat increase, because it seems to just fly in the face of the class design. Pets are meant to be integral to the ranger, so why should you get rewarded for ignoring them completely?
Now, this doesn’t mean I think pets are perfect now, far from it. You’re right, Loki, you gotta work on them rather than hiding them behind the boxes in the garage and hope people don’t bring it up again. Increase responsiveness, reduce the amount of rooting they have on attack. Hell, I think damage redistribution might work too; Maybe give like 15-25% of the pet’s damage back to the ranger. But don’t try to lop off your arm.
I think something that could be easy to implement is that certain traits, when taken, affect the appearance of kit models. Like if you take Fireforged Trigger, the head/muzzle of the flamethrower and elixir gun could become more streamlined to reflect the reduced recharge. Or taking Grenadier changes the backpack that spawns.
I’m curious to learn if anyone’s found this recipe yet. I looked over at GW2Wiki’s list, but it seems like they have the recipe to every conjured weapon EXCEPT the flame axe. So in lieu of an actual recipe, I’m just inferring from the recipes of the other weapons. So, how does this look?
Conjured Flame
-Eldritch Scroll x1
-Mystic Coin x100
-Orichalcum Axe Blade x250
-Vial of Liquid Flame x1
Man, even for a non-legendary, this seems pretty daunting… I need 1,500 Orichalcum ore just for the blades, not mentioning the lodestones I’d have to get for the vial.
Agreed on most, but some comments.
Chill is extremely powerful- making 3 bounce would be kinda ridiculous. It would need increased CD, or replacing chill with cripple.
Could make the bounces cripple and the primary target still get chilled, but it is not like the ranger axe skills are so great that that addition would break the game it could be worth testing at least.
Another possibility is to give it a SMALL aoe blast. Like how our spear gun skills work. Have reach no further than adjacent range. Maybe increase the cd.
I like this more!! Make it so when winters bite hit it like explodes in frosty goodness chilling the target and any adjacent ones!
However, that’s just something i think would be cool, i really do not think that axes need a buff they feel really strong as is and can do more damage then any other weapon that we have if we get the double bounce.
AoE chill, even if the radius is small, still seems pretty powerful. You’d probably need to up the recharge on it. Maybe double it, to 20 seconds.
It always seemed to me that the professions in Guild Wars were skills that a person could learn as a livelihood, although I’m sure this isn’t the standard. Back in pre-searing, you’d have necromancers that would tend to the catacombs, and affairs of the deceased, while up in the mountains, there was Aziure, working on spell research for an outside organization (What is The Order mentioned by some of the ascalonian spellcasters, anyway?).
So it’s always been my thinking that the people of tyria tolerate necromancy because it can be used in practical manners. Not to say that there are not those who misuse it; Verata, Oberan the Reviled, and more recently, Necromancer Rissa from the charr’s order introduction arc.
Okay, okay, so a human, an asura, and an elder dragon walk into a bar. The bartender says, “what’ll you have boys?” The Asura says he’ll take a flask of firewater, and the human gets a mug of ale. The elder dragon points to the asura and says, “I’ll have him!” So the asura turns to the human and says, “can I get a little help here?” But the human had already run off leaving him with the bill!
… Okay the punchline needs a little work, but the parts are all there.
Putting 40 exotic level 80 Staffs into the Mystic Forge and guess what happened?

It’s rough, that’s for sure. To my knowledge, I can either try my luck with the mystic forge for a precursor, or attempt to farm up the 200+ gold for one off the TP, likely burning myself out on the game before I even get 1/4 of the legendary components together.
Maybe I’m just getting older, but I don’t feel like I can invest as much time to getting the legendary that I want, like Frostfang. So I’ll stick with my pearl reaver for now.
The ice-arm effect Frostfang has is pretty disappointing, anyway.
Charr should have been the main enemy. Undead are boring and repetitive.

I happen to find the Risen rather interesting. They are a fresh take on a relatively old genre: the Zombie Apocalypse. That genre has spawned thousands of games, TV shows, movies, and comic books, and yet this one seems to make them stand out. I don’t know why. Maybe because they serve an evil dragon who wants to conquer Tyria, maybe because they are on a once-sunken, barnacle-encrusted island.
I don’t know. However, nobody is making you stay in Orr. You could get relatively the same rewards in Fireheart Rise or the Iron Marches. Just remember not everyone shares your opinion, just like you don’t share mine.
It’s the later forms of the Risen that interest me. Early on, all you really see are rotting charr, asura, humans, and norn (and btw, why didn’t we see risen animals/lesser races as well?). But once you finally make landfall on Orr proper, you get to deal with all of these risen Orrian, with seaweed hanging off and corals growing out of their backs. I liked the concept of the Eyes and Mouth of Zhaitan, and really wish they had expanded more on that. (And as a bit of a gripe, why end game spoilers aheadcouldn't Zhaitan himself separate into different dragons? When the megalaser sliced off both of his tails, I really expected them to start flapping those wings that were attached and then we'd have to fight off two undead lamprey wyverns.)
And on the topic of charr/human enmity, charr were only unjustified in their attacks and the Searing from a human perspective, because they were the victims. The charr were just taking back land that was once theirs, from some insignificant mice hiding behind their “gods”. Oh, and that the enmity hasn’t and shouldn’t persist into GW2 for a reason that was put forth earlier in the thread; it’s just not practical for either side to engage in a human-charr war right now. Humans were already fighting a two-front battle, with the charr to the east and centaurs to the west and north. And the charr had to deal with the now dishonored Flame Legion, and the humans, both living and ethereal, thanks to Adelbern’s last stand (Although the charr have been making technological strides that have started to lessen the threat of the ghosts- see iron legion’s arc, or Specter Warband’s outpost in Plains of Ashford). Now with the threat of the elder dragons, with their seemingly inexhaustible hordes of minions, and attacking from almost every angle? Wasting time on the back end of what’s been a century-long stalemate hardly seems like an effective use of resources, for both the humans and the charr.

I’d just like the axe to be melee? We already have 2 ranged weapons, we don’t need another one. I like axe offhand, but i wish whirlwing also reflected melee attacks or allowed you to move while using it >.<
But we also already have two melee weapons. Axe is the middleground; It is ranged, yes, but it also requires you to get in real close to get the most out of it.
Agreed on most, but some comments.
Chill is extremely powerful- making 3 bounce would be kinda ridiculous. It would need increased CD, or replacing chill with cripple.
4 is situational and slightly buggy (the return axe gets obstructed by the smallest things). Adding a utility of some kind (bind or daze would be nice, matches the defensive aspect of 5) would be a good addition. It’s good at what it does, but what it does is really simple.
2 is not TOO bad, but it’s only effective at close range. Making it a Whirl finisher (spin while throwing axes! yay!) would give it some additional offense and support options when combined with things like Traps or Healing spring, and would make it a much more adaptive skill.
About Winter’s Bite; What if you did something similar to the Mesmer’s Trick Shot, or Engineer’s Static Shot? First hit chills, and any subsequent bounce simply cripples. Though I still think an area slowdown might be a bit powerful?
Path of Scars needs to be a bit more… deadly? Like an AoE of sorts, it’d act like Phoenix. You throw it out and can hit people, then it arrives at its target and does some AoE bleeding or whatever, and then it returns.
I like the idea of making Splitblade a whirl finisher, though. Would give some interesting synergy with Torch and traps.
I try to have somewhat serious names most of the time, but I named my wolf pet Three Wolf Moon, and I’m never changing that.
I like…can’ turn in mid air. I have to land and turn like a kitten I watched some videos of people doing it online and it seems like they have the pathing memorized…which scares me how many times it probably took them to get like that.
I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not falling, but I’m just not fast enough. That beginning part with the rubble is the hardest part of the whole thing…it’s like designed ti discourage and frustrate people!
As others have posted, the designer apparently only wanted 1 in 20 players to actually complete it. It is, in fact, specifically designed to discourage and frustrate 19 out of 20 players.
-Why- the designer thought that was a good idea for a limited-time special event, however, is a different and more puzzling question.
I would assume to help capture the flavor of the Mad King. After all he is a raving psychopath who revels in the misfortune and despair of his subjects. And bad jokes.
Arenanet, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed working through the Clock Tower. It was infuriating, yes, but slowly learning each part and eventually reaching that room at the top was IMMENSELY satisfying. Especially since I was a large, hulking charr.
So kudos to you. You did good with this one. Don’t ever change it.
Axe/Torch is a very decent AoE set for tagging mobs, especially when you pair it with traps and survival skills like Entangle. It does require you to get in close, but it’s worth it in most cases.
Axes axes axes. Gosh do I love axes. Axe/Warhorn or Torch is always on my weapon bar, usually with GS or Longbow as my off set. I’d like to use Sword more, but I can’t feasibly see myself using it unless I download the combat mod.
I hear you. I was just thinking in general. The size would be an issue, but yes it would look awesome haha. I’m sure the pets would have to exist in the game as well.
Oh yeah, it definitely would be. If cool ruled, I’d be riding with a Branded Devourer, I tell you.
@Qixilver: I think the issue with some of those is that we have no basis for them existing in Tyria. Lions in Elona for sure, but we have no reason to believe rhinos and elephants have any presence on this world. Plus you probably have to think about size; they’d be cool, but you can’t lug around a huge rhino or elephant, because they’d just get in the way of other people’s visibility.
Oh yes, I’d love to see more pets for the ranger.
Raptors – They can be somewhat flimsy but have a lot of power behind them, special abilities could be screeches or bite attacks.
Griffons – I could see them with more power than the small bird, but slower. Could have swoop attacks as their specials.
Wurms – Trickier to justify considering how they move about. But they could be a more siege-like pet with a longer than average attack range. Specials would be rocks or globs of goop that get lobbed.
Wind Rider – Okay this one is just kind of silly, but I like the idea so I’ll put it down anyway. A support pet that can strip boons and remove conditions. Specials could be beam attacks or AoE fields.
And the last one isn’t a new species, but I’d love if Arenanet introduced the Kvedulf as a canine pet. Ever since I saw one in Eye of the North, I wanted to tame it, but no dice.
