Reasoning with Kralkatorrik

in Lore

One of the exciting things about the upcoming Path of Fire expansion is the potential interplay and conflict between 3 factions of antagonist…

1 Balthazar and the Forged
An embittered human god, recently empowered with bloodstone magic and the energy from two elder dragons. With revenge on his mind he’s out with army to hunt down another Elder Dragon to obtain yet more power.

2 Kralkatorrik and the Branded
A gigantic Elder Dragon/force of nature, likened to a mountain when dormant and can transform into a sandstorm when active. Has the usual Elder Dragon preoccupation of consuming (all) magic and corrupting life – Kralkatorrik’s crystalline corruption is particularly deadly

3 Palawa Joko and the Awakened
The powerful undead lich who is “ruler of Elona” and not going to take kindly to other powerful entities trying to muscle-in on his home turf.

Arenanet are selling Balthazar as the main antagonist as the expansion lets us “battle a god”. Joko is a nasty piece of work, but historically we know he can be bargained with.

But what about Kralkatorrik? Can he be reasoned with?

Both Mordremoth and Zhaitan could communicate (indirectly in the case of the undead dragon). That was mostly to threaten & antagonise the player, but it suggests conversations with Kralkatorrik are possible. What do you think the hunters reaction will be to becoming the hunted? Will he be concerned?

I have this impression that the Crystal Dragon could be a very conceited entity. I would have thought that if consuming magic is your preoccupation and purpose in life, then Balthazar could be considered a particularly tasty morsel, and Kralkatorrik would relish taking him on (leading to the dragon’s destruction).

Some have suggested Kralkatorrik fathered Glint’s eggs (unverified). Furthermore, Gleam is still a potential player in Tyrian history – was it he who entrusted the Master of Whispers with Aurene? (A popular theory). If there is any truth in these, can the Crystal Dragon’s “children” play a role in helping us influence him?

Seriously good. Like the Ranger & Engineer tracks.
(Not sure about that melody in the last track…)

If some of these had been submitted as a player generated resource for Shroud of the Avatar, for example, you would likely of had them included in the actual game by now.

Helpful Cards

Ally NPCs & Royalty
As well as enemies there is a sprinkle of friendly NPC cards in the deck. These are good to keep hold of, but if you can’t match the Call Card with any other then you have to use them! NPCs award medals that can reduce your Penalty Points if you are still holding one of them at the end of the round. Standard NPCs award Bronze Medals which allow you to subtract 2 Penalty Points from your total. Royal NPCs award Silver Medals (you can subtract 4 penalty points) and Gold Medals (you can subtract 8 Penalty Points). In any round, you can only score as low as 0 Penalty Points – so no negative scores in this game!

Divine Dirges
As a newly qualified Siren of Orr, you can call the Chancel of Echoes and manifest special powers through handy Divine Dirge Cards! These rare cards can really mix up the gameplay and have the following effects:

  • Dirge of Balthazar (Destruction) – playing this forces all other players to pick up a card from the Draw Pile
  • Dirge of Dwayna (Resurrection) – take a card of your choice from the Discard Pile (bringing it “back to life”!)
  • Dirge of Grenth (Quickness) – the gameplay speeds up as the next player misses his/her turn
  • Dirge of Lyssa (Confusion) – the direction of play is changed (clockwise to anticlockwise and vice versa).
  • Dirge of Melandru (Good Fortune) – you can place two cards on the Discard Pile (the Dirge and another card)

Example Result for 1 Round (Four players)

  • Player 1 wins by getting rid of all her cards. She scores 0.
  • Player 2 has 2 cards left – Unchained Spider (8) and Horrid Illusion (3). He scores 11 Penalty Points.
  • Player 3 has 2 cards – Explorer Hiffa (Bronze Medal – deduct up to 2 points) & Magma Elemental (18). Score is 16 Penalty Points
  • Player 4 has 3 cards left but is lucky! – Lava Slug (1), Unchained Villager (4) and King Reza (Gold Medal so deduct up to 8 points). You can’t have negative values so he also scores 0.

Players 1 & 4 end the first round as joint leaders…

Special Cards

Abaddon Cards
These act as “Wildcards” and can be used to match any Call Card. When using the Abaddon Card, the player must nominate the suit he/she wants to be active. It’s a sound strategy to hold onto this wildcard until you have no other choice but to play it. However, keep a check on how many cards your opponents have left because you don’t want to be holding an Abaddon Card at the end of the round as it is worth 20 Penalty Points !

Balthazar’s Reliquary Cards
Balthazar is currently the greatest threat that Tyria faces and, to reflect this, cards in the Balthazar Reliquary suit are worth twice as many Penalty Points as a result! These cards are played the same way as those in other suits, using the large top-right/bottom-left numbers until the end of the round. When the Penalty Points are added up, however, then you use the small number in the middle of the bottom of the card. The Balthazar Boss card is worth an eye-watering 30 Penalty Points – the most of any card in the game.

Lyssa’s Reliquary Cards
The patron goddess of Mesmers is a mysterious character and this is reflected in her cards. Like those of the Balthazar suit, at the end of the round when adding up Penalty Points you use the small number in the middle of the bottom of the card – and these numbers have been randomly generated!

Greetings

Inspired by the excellent finish to Living World Season 3, I decided to create a card game based on the Siren’s Landing map and its denizens – and, about 500 screengrabs later, here it is!

One Path Ends Card Game
(PDF File on Google Drive, about 12mb)

This is an easy-to-play “shedding” card game where the aim is to get rid of all your cards in each round and have the lowest overall score at the end of the game. It is very similar to games like “Whot!” and “UNO”, but with a Guild Wars theme and a few small innovations.

The Basic Cards
Each card features a creature (mob) from Siren’s Landing. These are arranged in suits relating to the reliquaries of the human gods: Dwayna, Melandru, Grenth, Lyssa and, of course, Balthazar. The cards also have a number (top-right & bottom-left) which approximates to the strength of the creature. In this game, lower scores are better so this number represents “Penalty Points”. Watch out for “Boss” cards which have much higher Penalty Points than the others.

(Some low-res examples attached at the end of the post)

Basic Gameplay
The pack is shuffled and each player is dealt 6 cards. The remainder is placed face down and become the “Draw Pile”. The person to the left of the dealer places one of his/her cards face up in a space next to the Draw Pile. That becomes the “Discard Pile”. The card face-up on top of the Discard Pile is known as the “Call Card”.

With gameplay commencing in a clockwise direction, each player, in turn, can place a card on the Discard Pile that matches either the number or suit of the Call Card. If they do not have a suitable matching card in their hand then they have to take a card from the Draw Pile (don’t let anyone else see it!)

If at any time, the Draw Pile become exhausted, then the last Call Card is left face up and the remainder turned face down to make a new Draw Pile (without shuffling!)

Gameplay continues until one person has managed to get rid of all their cards. That ends the round. At the end of the round, the numbers on the cards are added up to see how many Penalty Points each player with remaining cards has obtained. All cards are shuffled and the next round can be started, with players being dealt new cards and a new Draw Pile being made.

A game can consist of an agreed fixed number of rounds or, alternatively, players can be “out” if they have accumulated a fixed number of penalty points (say, 300.)

But there’s more to it than that…

I agree with this topic – I would like to see Drakkar rise out of Drakkar Lake together with other EOTN locations which are quite a bit north of Bitterfrost Frontier.

Unfortunately, it makes sense that Jormag would move south, especially if he has detected/absorbed some “Mordy juice” !

cocodragon.7916

This is a good spot:

Remember in Edge of Destiny when Destiny’s Edge went up against the Destroyer of Life and its weakness was the arrow burning with primordial fire? It originated from the Destroyer of Life itself, so I’m extrapolating that it essentially came from Primordus (Ancient Magic right there).

And that was no slight scratch: “A holocaust erupted from every joint of the beast… Then came a deafening crack. The rocky figure of the Destroyer of Life blasted apart”.

Wow. Do we really need Taimi’s proof that this is exactly what we need to combat Jormag??

But wait… this is an example of an Elder Dragon’s energy destroying one of it’s own  champions, not that of an opposing rival dragon! (which is the point Taimi is suggesting).

And, as yet, there is nothing to say the scroll has anything to do with “primordial” fire as such. I hope Anet doesn’t drop this, and gives us a proper insight into the origin and power of the scroll. “Similar to the scroll Aesgir used…” is not enough info mateys!

Primordus energy upstaged by a "Magic Scroll"

in Lore

Posted by: cocodragon.7916

cocodragon.7916

One of the key revelations (or Taimi’s new theories) about the Elder Dragons was that one dragon’s energy can be counteracted by another’s. She suggests the magic of the Fire Dragon, Primordus, could be negated by that of the Ice dragon, Jormag, and vice versa. Logical enough I thought.

I pictured Taimi figuring out how to imbue a weapon with the energy of Primordus, and the player-character using this to break Jormag’s tooth. I was looking forward to giving that a go.

Instead, uninterested in Taimi’s research, Braham uses a magic scroll to empower his mother’s bow. The only information we have on the scroll is that it is “similar to the scroll Aesgir used in his great victory”, when he was able to obtain a tooth from Jormag (thus proving that the Elder Dragon can be harmed).

But what is this scroll? The only info I can find on the scroll used by Aesgir was that it was a “powerful jotun scroll” which is now lost. What does it have to do with fire? What does it have to do with Primordus’ energy?

I though the crack Braham’s arrow made in the tooth was a bit disappointing. Much better to give it a thwack with a Primordus-enchanted warhammer and see it shatter into a million pieces…

Mordremoth is a complex entity. Only the “Avatar” form of the Jungle Dragon has legs and a tail (as encountered in the personal story “Hearts and Minds”). There is a great screenshot of that by ThisIsIsi (from the German wiki) as seen on p49 of the Lore Book.

The Mouth of Mordremoth, rooted near the Heart of Thorns, has a long serpentine body without wings, completely covered in vines and foliage. No legs as far as I can tell.

In addition, Mordremoth can twist vines and branches to create many faces / shapes (as seen in videos, cut-scenes and concept art). That’s why Canach and Trahearne referred to Mordremoth as “the jungle itself”.

Hats off to the designers at Anet who are responsible for the environment design – the Maguuma jungle looks incredible.

I love the truly massive scale, and particularly the height. With the joys of leaping off precipices and gliding around to get to those hard to reach places (or just gliding down slopes because you can’t be bothered to walk anymore). All that reminds me of Aion…

Stacks of detail and atmosphere to the jungle also – probably the most impressive environment I have seen in an MMO to date. Thank god for the minimap – I would have become lost heading down paths several times without it!

Oi Zenimax – Anet’s trees are bigger than yours…

Hi

I think we can all agree that the first two parts of the Living Story Season 2 were pretty good. I decided to make some summary videos of the main instances and PvE action.

In testing out a good bit of gameplay capture software, I developed an enthusiasm for recording games with their interface switched off – what a difference it makes!

With practice and the Naga programmed-up this is easily playable.

I thought I would set up a channel for my “MMOs without the Interface”. Have a look and see what you think:

Reinstate shortbow range, inc. longbow range

in Ranger

Posted by: cocodragon.7916

cocodragon.7916

After this patch I find myself hating the shortbow. The range in which you engage an enemy is a fundamental part of how you play the game. If you play the game every day for almost a year at the same range (and they can’t disengage until they leave it) you become very accustomed to that range. When you use different weapons it becomes a considerable loss to not have access to that range. The weapon feels very unfamiliar and often weak now, in some situations it’s the same as before, but too often I am out of range.

One of the worst parts of this nerf is that it has nothing to do with the power level of the shortbow. Ranged DPS is automatically inferior to melee DPS by game design and the ranger shortbow wasn’t even the strongest ranged weapon. Yet despite the weapon not having a power level problem to overcome, the balance devs disregarded the players who were happy accepting inferior DPS for a weapon that felt good at range. They didn’t care that this weapon could exist in its current form without hurting the meta (the longbow issues are longbow issues, not shortbow issues). Now a game which people spent almost a year playing is dramatically different for no understandable reasons.

There are actually a few simple things they could do to fix the bow issue.

Change Eagle Eye to:
Increases range of Short bow, Long Bow and Harpoon gun
Increases Short Bow, Long Bow and Harpoon gun damage by 5%

Swap it with Remorseless Moving it from X to XII

This change would put it on par with other classes as nearly every class has the ability to increase the damage of all of their weapons by 5-10% as it is.

Change the effect of the trait Remorseless from “regain opening shot when you kill a foe” to “Short bow no longer requires you to be flanking or behind a target to apply bleeds.”

cocodragon.7916

Put SB in the eagle eye trait, so it gives players who take the trait a way of returning SB to 1200 range? Still a nerf because they are forced to take a trait, thus sacrifice another one. But it would mean a lot of Ranger players in PvE/WvW wouldn’t face a choice of buying all new equipment or quit Ranger completely…

I made my Dreamer, only 2 weeks prior to the patch. Little did I know, post the patch I just end up neglecting my Ranger and went on to my necro. All the hard work – nullified. ):

Dear devs, please please please reinstate the 1.2k range. It has been a severe handicap on my WvW runs. I can’t chase, my kiting is impaired and I am now more of a burden than anything to my Guild when we do guild runs. Even if you don’t reinstate it to 1.2k, I hope at the bare minimum give us a trait which allows us to trait it up and get back to where we started.

cocodragon.7916

I tested the range of the shortbow versus the longbow an now it looks pathetically comical. My character could throw something that far! Oh wait, he can, an AXE!!! The idea of a bow, short or long, is to propel a projectile father using the potential energy of the flexed stick to increase its range, especially beyond the range the arm can throw. Decreasing the range by 300 is too much.

I’d agree, range is a significant “nerf”. I play a ranger to range kill. I do not want to be melee, it is not my play style! Please feel free to take back the damage increase and put the range back out at 1200, or give us a trait to do so.

People choose rangers because of their play style that is kitting things and hitting foes from afar. None is saying that we can´t be good using melee weapons, that is not the point. So if you remove the one thing that make u choose that class you are basically killing the class.

Is it just me or is the “fun” (as far as it has been fun using the shortbow anyways) now completely gone in WvW?

I tried to use it – but man… you cant chase anyone down any longer with it… and for my condi build Longbow just isnt the weapon any more…

what about beeing the best Ranged class? I cant see it…

Yes, I miss a lot the shorbow range, either for deciding when to start the fight, either to chase people. We need the 1200 back at least on #4 to slow down fleeing enemies.

…at WvW post-patch-shortbow usefullnes ends on small group roaming – with 900 range You are useless when it comes to defend tower/keep

With the reduction of range on shortbow, can the bleed condition of being behind or beside the target removed? We are the only class that has this requirement on a ranged weapon. Warriors and thieves both can apply their bleeds from any position on a target.

Wholeheartedly agree on changing shortbow range back to 1200 (and increasing untraited longbow range to 1500). Sorry for the bit of a rant below.

This is the THIRD TIME I’m forced to adapt to out of the blue shortbow nerfs. First was the quite hefty damage nerf it received back in the early days of GW2. I recovered from that no problems since I always thought the damage was bit too much. “Balance update” I thought back then. The second was the infamous “animation fix”. This one really hurt since the difference in firing speed was something noticeable especially as it broke quickness at the same time (if I remember correctly). I cried some tears and bit my lip, but i survived. Number 2½ came in form of quickness nerf. This hit the shortbow’s burst capacity significantly but I recovered from that too since quickness was always considered something OP. I came pretty close to reroll at that time but I resisted the temptation. And now they are making me to face this range nerf, maybe the most significant of all the nerfs so far.

Not the most significant nerf in the terms of damage output or ranger effectiveness as a whole, but in something that changes the nature of the weapon so drastically. Because, really, bows are weapons that shoot targets at distance. Distance far greater you can throw your axe or torch with your bare hands. And the ranger is the master of that range. At this point someone is bound to remind that " aha, rangers are not archers and so you can’t have that long range you’re asking for". Don’t give me that. As long as there’s no profession called “Archer” in GW2, Ranger is the profession you turn towards when you’re looking for some bow&arrow action. Ranger fills that niche, it always has. In GW1 ranger’s only weapon of choice (defined by something you could call “traitlines”) was bow and accompanied with it, came pet (which no-one ever used). Together you formed something what was called Ranger.

Shortbow has always been my weapon of choice because it’s the 1 weapon that made me really feel like a ranger. But gradually with each nerf they’ve been taking the “fun” out of the weapon and at the same time out of the ranger class. And now, almost year in the game, they want to take that class defining range away from us (me)! This is borderline too much for my poor ranger to handle. No i won’t be rerolling for this but I won’t be spending much time on my ranger either, for sure. Hope they come to their senses and revert shortbow changes, asap. Please, Anet, please…

+1 Good post

Something like a range deduction on a ranged weapon should allow people to swap their hard earned dreamers. Im not keen on having The Dreamer sit in my bag 80% of the time while I use a crappy GS that took me 2 secs to order off TP. Going to put in ticket.

The common suggestion for the increase of shortbow range from 900 back to 1200 to be achievable via traits is a sensible one. This may be by adding it to “Eagle Eye” or by the introduction of a specific shortbow trait – but in any case it would allow people to choose whether or not to invest in shortbow range or not.

Those investigating alternative builds and weapon combinations can continue to do so. Those who have invested effort in aquiring The Dreamer will at least have an opportunity to benfefit properly from their investment.

I would ask the community to unite behind this suggestion as the best way of having a chance of influencing the developers. All heated debate about the virtues of bows vs other weapons, what is meant by “Ranger” and how the real-life capabilites of shortbows compare with longbows would thankfully be rendered null & void.

There are a lot of unhappy Ranger players out there at the moment.

For my own part I say:

Reinstate the 1200 range for a shortbow or have some mechanism for doing so.

I quote my own post:

Killsmith.8169 has it right:

“Nobody used shortbow solely because of the range. Most people probably saw it as the least sucky ranged option. It has decent defensive/utility skills built in, benefits from the piercing arrows trait, and isn’t the longbow. Those are the three things it has going for it.

Also, if we’re going to apply logic to this stuff, we should probably first recognize that a shortbow’s real world equivalent would probably be a composite bow, which had all of the range of a longbow, but was much smaller due to the improved materials, design, and construction."

Surely Arenanet must reverse this sb range reduction – the class is in chaos.

Fester.9328’s topic “Where to go from here..” says it all. The constant advice is:

“If you want a ranged expert you can achieve that with the Warrior.”

There is no way it should be like that.

Reinstate shortbow range, inc. longbow range

I change the OP in favour of the conclusionary post which reflects the consensus of the players and which I accept:

The common suggestion for the increase of shortbow range from 900 back to 1200 to be achievable via traits is a sensible one. This may be by adding it to “Eagle Eye” or by the introduction of a specific shortbow trait – but in any case it would allow people to choose whether to invest in shortbow range or not.

Those investigating alternative builds and weapon combinations can continue to do so. Those who have invested effort in aquiring The Dreamer will at least have an opportunity to benefit properly from their investment.

I would ask the community to unite behind this suggestion as the best way of having a chance of influencing the developers. All heated debate about the virtues of bows vs other weapons, what is meant by “Ranger” and how the real-life capabilites of shortbows compare with longbows would thankfully be rendered null & void.

Arenanet just need to work out the details.

In the Monthly Achievement window the “Experience Survivor” achievement title has been replaced with question marks “????” which is a pain as I completed that.

Has the “Experience Survivor” achievement been removed from the game intentionally?
