I tested Mallyx with Settler’s, and I found it survivable in the Silverwaste/Demo areas. It’s just that it seems like there are two weapons that give conditions, and few traits that would support a condi build.
I generally feel the same as above. GS is weak with little lifeforce generation.
GS5 rarely hits, doesn’t autotarget, and hangs up in the terrain.
Reaper Shroud is amazing, save for the fact that it requires 2 trait lines to be effective. Can the trait line share some redundancy with Soul Reaping for LF gen and drain to spec survival traits. It feels like I have to take Reaper+Soul Reaping plus one tree to use it.
Edit: Reading tooltips is useful.

I like the speculation that the utilities may be kits to compensate for weapons not in the game. Berserker greataxe, land spear, etc.
It also doesn’t have a target limit like symbols.
I’d just like a 25% movement passive. That would make me happy.
It’s not “rifle thief” exactly. Specializations are sounding like they’re going to be like a new class entirely, possibly with its own weapon/slot skills, traits, and (maybe) class skill. It’ll be the choice whether to be “Thief” or rifle-bearing “Scout” (or whatever they choose to name it) once you unlock your spec.
I’m just excited they’re doing away with NPE.
Yeah, I was thinking about Arwic too when LA got destroyed.
no clue, doesnt really sound like something a mesmer would graduate into for a very first mastery from Anet.
I’m curious what the new skills and elite and traits are and if they are all as useless as the last additions we got..
But mesmer shield is nice… i guess.. i really would have prefered a new main handed weapon to break the tiresome process of trying to make a build and having to ask myself “Sword or Scepter? Eh.. lets just go GS and Staff again..”
Plot twist: Mainhand and offhand shields.
Personally, I REALLY would’ve preferred mainhand pistol, because C’MON!!
Well, he said specializations would be choices, so it’s still a possibility we have more than one prestige class to choose from. A mainhand-pistol class isn’t totally out.
It’d be interesting if they expand specs off of all the elites: chronomancer (Tw), Transmuter (Moa), Spellblade (Mass Inv.)
How do successive sylvari not learn it in the Dream. I understand that Mordy’s lieutenant appears in the Sylvari tutorial, but I also heard from beta interviews that next-gen Sylvari learn from the Dream what other Sylvari learn in the world. I.E. the asura’s dissection.
So how did successive Sylvari not learn Wynne’s secret specifically?
You might be asking for necro, but it’s still more of a personal preference.
Late-game scaling in open-world events consist of lots of quickly-dying trash mobs and scale with long-channel/duration no-cooldown aoe (KITTEN KITTEN KITTENING KITTENFACED subjugators), which destroys mesmer dps. Necros can still do well with staff/death shroud, with little need for stability or escapes.
Mesmers shine in smaller-group settings like dungeons and fractals pve-wise.
In pvp and roaming wvw, they’re about the same.
Necros are one of the worst pvf classes in the game.
Everywhere else, you’ll find they’re versatile except in frontline wvw. This is just because the Death line puts too much trait focus on minions, which will be addressed in the future.
Symbol of Swiftness
To clarify the new Symbol of Swiftness will give you 4 seconds of Swiftness every single pulse regardless of if you have swiftness or not. This is a improvement in many situations and a slight loss in the situation where you were using the Symbol as just a one time buff. I think this makes it feel more like a Symbol, which is good. We are still discussing the idea of it being 5 seconds, but there is some danger of that going pretty high with boon duration.that is a pretty nasty change for wvw. Oo i hope you thought that through…
I raged about this change for a little bit, until I got into WvW today with my guard.
We stacked, blasted might, ran across the map and the 3-4 guardians in the group laid out a chain of SoS’es. Now, with the current system, we get ~8 seconds of swiftness if it’s fresh, 1 second if it’s not. So if you already have swiftness from anyone else in your group, your SoS only counts for 1 extra second, and all of the guardians start to drift to the back of the guild group/zerg—especially when the PuG’s start accumulating and soak up the warhorn buffs. It was more frustrating because people kept putting weak swiftnesses on me, and I kept losing it and waiting for my SoS to recharge and reapply.
With the change, all of those additional SoS’es would add 4 seconds apiece regardless of whether swiftness were already applied, so it would be 12-16 extra seconds of swiftness instead of 3-4. That makes it better for WvW.
The biggest downside would be running to group events in PvE, or roaming.
a) our core design is very selfish, no point changing it
b) HOW THE FUDGE CAKE IS A AOE DAZE NOT SUPPORTIVE (so the team help skill on 4 instead of 5).
c) It 5 used to siphon hp
d) HOW BY GRENTHS BURNED WINTERSDAY BICUITS IS A AOE DAZE NOT SUPPORTIVE?I agree that an aoe daze is supportive. It just does not make sense to me that there are 3 classes that have a warhorn skill that provides swiftness and we are the only one that does not apply that swiftness AOE
But by that logic, there are 3 classes that can use axe, and it makes no sense that warriors are the only ones who can’t use it at range.
gripe gripe gripe, gripe gripe, gripe gripe gripe.
Death Magic
Probably my biggest issue is that the minor traits in the line in general give no passive variety or protection. It’s the “upgrade your staff and get a flesh rat” tree. Reanimator and Protection of the Horde give no benefit if you’re not running minions. While Deadly Strength does actually involve toughness and not minions, I can only gripe that it still doesn’t help survivability.
I liked Bhawb’s suggestion in another thread that the ICD on Reanimator could be removed, and the limit increased such that you can have two or three running around, but overall, it gives no added protection, and could be a major trait in the Curses tree due to the additional bleeds if that were the case. Plus, it can afford mm’s to spread out a little bit.
Staff Mastery and Greater Marks: is the reason why non-mm’s go into this line. Plus, little benefit to taking one or the other. I’d like this to get merged into one, but I doubt that will happen. Still, With the increase of base mark size, I’d like to see the marks just unblockable and the cooldown reduction without a radius increase.
Spiteful Vigor: Misnamed. You can guess what I want this to give instead of retaliation.
Death Nova and Necromantic Corruption: While I understand how Soul Reaping’s grandmaster traits both involve Death Shroud, both of these GM traits involve Minion damage, not survivability. Other classes’ boon strips are Master-level, so NC could move down a tier and make room for something that would add stability, protection, or more in line with Necros: aoe weakness or blind. Death Nova felt offputting. There isn’t a lot of condi damage involved with minions. There can be, but it’s another trait that could easily fit in Curses.
We’re not supposed to have a lot of mobility. At most we get swiftness, otherwise all of our “mobility” skills are designed solely to chase, or create distance while in a fight, but not leave it completely.
A lack of mobility means death in a pvp environment, mobility is king. We are the easiest of any class to be trained on, people can stick to us like glue and you all know this.
this doesnt matter to bawb he would rather parrot what he heard a dev say than think for himself.
Yeah, I think it’s better for the devs and bawb to talk with walls. At least, they will get it: they will not waste their time asking for something that will never happen. Sometime this community is so stuborn, it’s not even funny anymore. Again, if you feel mobility is king in pvp, I think it’s time to ask yourself if necromancer really suit your playstyle.
Ok true that Bhawb (and Bas when he still played) kinda do come of as big trolls and/or “your” annoying stepfather who tells you to go to sleep at 6 when you are used to being up to 10, but the point still actually stands:
“What part of i like being a mighty glacier and dont want mobility do you not understand?” Mobility plain aint a thing of the necro and while the attrition subject is very very lacking and a lot of questionable defensive choices have been made, dont make another dhuumfire incident (necros didnt need more burst, necro got more burst, everything else got nerfed hard, same will happen just replace burst with mobility).
It’s true that playing necro in WvW taught me how to read the battle and not just follow the icon and mash buttons. I survive battles, large and small, by making smarter decisions and micromanaging encounters, especially since that gs warrior will always break rank and run right at me. I’m winning that specific encounter more often, and learning how to rely on what I have and not wishing for what others can do.
Also, Bhawb took it on himself to act as community liason and bring together a lot of input to and from the devs, so he’s probably asked these questions and is repeating the same answers they’ve given him. You can’t expect him to yell at the devs because the forum community wants something “now” without burning bridges. Bhawb does a lot that he doesn’t have to. I don’t agree with what he has to say all the time, but don’t agree with attacking him for giving us the answer he’s been given.
That said, this is the same argument Ret Pallys had from vanilla WoW. The devs said that all classes couldn’t be dps classes. The players noted that paladins were the only ones that couldn’t. Also, nothing to do but autoattack.
It’s the same argument here: Whirlwind, savage leap; Retreat, leap of faith; swoop, hunter’s shot, lightning retreat; Thief. . .just, thief; Elixir S, jump shot, slick shoes; phase retreat, blink, decoy, veil, mass invis, icurtain; rtl, mist form, lightning flash. . .
I’d understand if we got a block or a mist form/endure pain-type power to keep with the tanky-clothy motif, but every other class has at least one way to disengage from a fight by leap, teleport, or stealth. What exactly is the devs’ intent?
I’m not sure what some of you are talking about. Main hand dagger is one of the highest DPS weapons in the game, and Death Shroud and Lich Form are incredible.
Unfortunately, necros are one of the worst PvF classes in the game.
This was a bug. It was fixed. If you had a build that relied entirely upon getting out 3 iDuelists, that was a bad build, full stop. Hate to break it to you. If your build relied on confusion bomb, it was a bad build twice over.
This is a simple bug fix. That’s all.
You cant just assume something was a bug or not based on personal opinion.
And i was quite happy with my build. Although getting out 3 duelist my goal i had alternatives depending on the situation. And as for confusion bombing, that was the icing on the cake, although it was the only reason i had to justify going rampagers gear over berserkers.
And although my build was flawed, for its purpose (single target dps) it did exceptionally well.
With all 3 duelist out, i was doing 4k dmg per a duelist with a conistant 20+ stacks of bleed, a few stacks of vulnerability, burning from staff and 3 combo fields for confusion stacking. I was happy with my build regardless of how “bad” it was.
It’s not so much opinion as consistency. The iDuelist does a p/p thief’s Unload, which also has a 20% projectile. All projectile channels do. My sincere condolences on your loss. I hope you’ll manage to get through this tragedy somehow.
In larger battles, conditions are useless: World Bosses, events, and WvW zergs. In pvp, wvw roaming (and even in dungeons if you’re the only condimancer) condi is fine. It takes unnecessarily long to set up bleeds on dungeon mobs, but it’s fine.
But with WvW zergs, there are so many aoe cleanses or squishies dropping quickly, you’ll only get 2-3 stacks of bleeds, or epidemic a dead target. On the pve end of it, you have to fight to be one of 25 bleeds, or one poison or burn. So you’re limited to less than ~2500 dps -at best-, so you might as well go power anyway.
So if you’re going condi in pvp, you’re fine. It’s just in larger fights, you’ll just be doing your scepter damage, or will be applying bleeds to dead targets.
Welcome to [ISLE], a small guild from Madagascar! We hope you can bridge the gap from SEA into Euro coverage. Nice to have you here!
They like to move it move it?
[IRON] and [COIN] behave we do not want to have to spend the rest of this week trying to keep you guys split apart
a bit of rivalry is fine let’s keep it as civil as possible we came here to fight not act as referee lol
just put pret and trix in a golem and let them fight it out.
Hmm… Two golems slugging it out in a coliseum point outside a bl bay?
Real Steel gw2 style. Make it happen!
Leagues are an excuse by ANet to sit on their butt and do nothing with the WvW game mode. Think about it, they stated that no changes will come to WvW while leagues are going on in an effort to keep them “fair”. It’s just an excuse they can point to when people ask why nothing is changing in WvW.
No WvW changes = More PvE changes
Leagues are a Gem Store money grab, just like every other event. The more they encourage server stacking, via the bloodlust buff and leagues, the more they’ll make in transfers as well as discourage unpaid competitive pvp.
Depends on your build and who you’re facing?
Tanky ruins-roaming havoc groups will be more difficult than zerker-specs trying to catch up with their icons.
Roaming is a broad term.
The stat boost, while controversial, is there to give the buff meaning in the context of the general WvW battle. Providing boosts like %WXP, etc. don’t have impact in fights against other sides, they are just a nice bonus for you. The stat boost and the points for finishing players mean that not only do you want to have the buff, but you don’t want your opponents to have it.
So, I was in wvw for about an hour before and up until the servers went off and the orbs were taken out. This is how it went down:
We’d just lost QL and Lang after a 30ish-man blob beat down the doors and ignored the seige. The green side (forgot which server) got all the orbs overnight, and we were trying to hold onto something after getting shutout well into the evening. We built 8 ballistae, 2 cats, a bunch of arrowcarts, and a treb while the green zerg camped the spawn. When they finally came for us, they were able to facetank all of the seige, the 40 or so extra defenders, and take the camp anyway, not losing one. Not. One.
Then the servers went down.
Tell me this won’t happen again. Tell me that while throwing a 4-golem rush on a keep, a zerg blob won’t wipe the skirmish area and overpower a map. How is this going to keep servers from coming out of the weekend with a blowout lead. The only competition in wvw right now is between 2nd and 3rd. How will this fix anything?
There on those on TC who act as you have suggested but there are many more who do not. The WvW regulars have a much worse time fighting outmatched opponents than we do someone like SoR, but we expect SoR to perform and a lot of us were expecting so much more than SoR has delivered. You can kitten up your ego as much as you want, if you are a rallian as Aurust is, but the glimmer of hope some of our guilds have taken from SoR is in gvgs, everything else is lacking in notability.
Lacking in notability sez the TC poster…. Ha! I suppose deluding yourself is one way to make the butt pain go away.
Unlike some of the other posters that try to sugarcoat things, I won’t. TC barring a very very few minor exceptions, has weak builds, tactics, and organization. I did not find fighting TC a challenge, and overall I would say that because of TC, this week of wvw was dull…..
Yeah, TC you have to be stronger like SoR: Roll upleveled in zerker gear; double dodge then spam one, and keep retreating until you find TW to back you up. Also, arrow carts in open field.
Bunch of unskilled roleplaying noobs.
PSA The dolyak parade will be in 2.5 hours!
In the wvw update, the league champion will be awarded a golden dolyak.
…but we already have a golden dolyak.
what does this mean?
Are we league champions by default? Does Handin have to switch servers if we don’t win? Will all servers eventually have golden dolyaks thus have to parade every Thursday?
Anet may have caused the end of the world…
I think they could buff Reanimator (and other such on-death traits) by expanding what it summons off of, and reducing the ICD.
Having two or three out at a time would make condition builds interesting. . . However, I don’t know if it would improve lupi fights.
I’d still like to see it go to something less specialized and improving overall defense for any build.
Either. Scepter/dagger epidemic with ravager gear worked for me (at 60 ravager changes to carrion or rampager) but axe/focus mm is highly recommended.
Stability longer than a second that I don’t have to spec 30pts into. Maybe in a corruption like BiP.
Still staff. For single-target weapons, axe or dagger and focus or horn.
For a condition build, scepter/dagger with epidemic and staff.
for trash mobs and dynamic events, condition is fine. Thieves level in record time with blossom/cluster bomb +caltrops. It’s just in dungeons that you’ll hear tantrums.
(edited by datawais.7209)
They’re too different specs. D/p is a power/crit backstab setup, and you should gear as above, or I’m reading a lot of people going sentinels with zerker jewelry. P/d is a condition set, and you should look at full carrion or apothecary/Reyna’s. Either are effective, but don’t have a lot of synergy together.
Well, at least his rant here was slightly less insane. He also wants Anet to punish thieves for “spreading irony”.
Go 10 (mug)/0/30 (shadow’s embrace/hidden thief/shadow’s rejuv.)/0/30 (uncatchable/bountiful theft/sleight of hand)
P/d for wvw, sb for zergs and sieges
Shortbow for pve: cluster bomb+caltrops for leveling.
Guys, stop being so ironic. It’s illegal and against the terms of service.
Seriously, you thieves are like rain on my wedding day. . .
Anet is adding a new profession designed specifically to bust zergs
Don’t we have this killer bunny in FoTM lol.. it would be hilarious if they made that into a meta event champ in WvW
The little white rabbit used to be a raid boss in Asheron’s Call.
… made it difficult to tell friend from foe?
For example, what if all names and health bars turned red for a player under confusion, so they don’t know who is the real enemy?
What if a confused player ran the risk of doing damage to their allies, not just themselves? Say 4% damage per stack of confusion?
It could be chance based, on attack. What if this effect scaled up with the number of stacks of confusion? For each stack => one additional friend “becomes” a foe.
What if mesmers gained a different unique condition/ability, opposite to the above that made all enemies appear as allies, and all attacks do reduced/no damage? What if this could be an AoE that affects enemy and ally alike, so in effect no one can harm each other for the duration (or do reduced damage per stack)?
Edit 2: I’d use that as an elite.Overpowered? What do you think?
(Edit: most relevant analogy are the pacify/frenzy skills from skyrim)
That’s how Confusion worked in CoH. Hence Mass Confusion was nicknamed “Mass Fun”
im not a sad kid with icecream dropped. no not at all. ive stated facts :P i mean cmon necro is WAY better than thief in zerg fights…imean SOOO much better. all his skills are AOE and affect alot of people with multiple condis…. and on a pulse at that. plus regular attack skills. now a thief only affects 1 target….other than his caltrops skills which is really good but only used in p/d bleed build. venom share is the best thing a thief can do in zerg play. simple. and stealth is the only defense a thief really has other than a few evades that are never used really (excluding endurance bc we all have that)
in a debate always bring examples or facts to the table and not say “awww spilt your milk” or "well you are wrong that thieves are worse than necros in zergs bc i say so " :P back it up. if u have that opinion thats fine thats great just bring something to the table to go with it. kind of bland :P
Unless you’re losing. If you enter into a fight with a necro you have two choices: 1) Win 2) Die. . .which sounds romantic to say it, but really a necro is pretty much a mobile goth engi turret.
“But necros have a second health bar”
Which means you get stabbed for 25-50% longer, but it doesn’t amount to anything (see: warrior) since you have no escape options. There’s no leap finishers or stealth to rely on, one skill that teleports you to a target and two that return you to your original location. Necros also have no access to vigor and stability (which thieves don’t either, but devs have stated an intention to make Necros a meaty, frontline-type profession) only through plague form (an elite transformation on a long cooldown) which ends when the skill does. Necros have more interesting aoe tricks to use, but in the thick of a zerg fight, it’s unlikely you’ll get to use them because cc’s are as rampant as anything else.
Thieves have access to: vigor, endurance discount, leaps, reticle-targeted teleports, and stealth. I understand spamming trick shot/cluster/poison into a crowd isn’t as glamorous, but it tags just as many bodies and in the event things go south, you have more to do than run away 25% faster and hope your 1-second fear on your 30-ish-second cooldown Reaper’s Mark will distract them long enough to waypoint. (Spoiler: it doesn’t)
A thief’s toughness line improves the thief’s passive ability to stealth which can buff, cleanse and heal as he/she escapes combat. The first passive creates a smoke bomb which blinds and stealths
A necro’s toughness line summons a dying minion and improves minion strength, but not necessarily the necro. For many specs, the first two major traits are spent on staff offensively. There aren’t a lot of options.
A thief’s vitality line also improves evasion, which gives an endurance discount and can be used to self-buff and escape cc condi’s.
A necro’s vitality line improves life drain, which can’t be used to disengage combat and can’t outheal zerg focus.
(edited by datawais.7209)
well lets put it this way. with multiple fields up by multiple players…..what defense will a thief then have? what role? this has to hurt their money as thieves wont spend money on a game they cant play/play well or at all :P idk
This is the real issue. A group of maybe 10 players can deny thieves access to areas by covering it with traps. The comparison to siege weapons above is irrelevant, cause thieves are also already hit by everything that hits non-stealthed players. This change specifically targets the thief’s main defense mechanism.
It seems more like another nerf to mesmers and veil/portal bombing. How often do you try to gank a group of 10+ solo? An item kit would be too time consuming for another player to drop if a solo roaming thief got the drop on him/her, and a thief running with a zergball can move around the field and flank in stealth or will spam trick shot/cluster bomb into the crowd.
Ok so last night im in EB, we have a zerg running around and I got caught up in a skirmish and got left, i was at the vista point up top just watching for a second and a charr warrior (TC i think, had twilight) whom i fought with earlier saw me and came up to fight me.
Well.. I dont know who you were, but that was one hell of an epic battle, felt like eternity i think it didnt stop for a good 5 mins just 1v1. In the end I got the upper hand even though it was lagging and barely won the fight, but mad props whoever you were, gave me a run for my money!
So he hit you with Twilight, but it felt like Eternity? Maybe next duel should be after sunrise. rimshot
Well played.
Thank you. I’ll be here all week. Remember to tip your waitresses.

After playing an engineer for a while and getting nerfed (my main build was a condi confusion build, and I didn’t feel like regearing) I went to thief. That didn’t last long due to how many are scrubs and freak when their burst combo fails. I’d rather avoid being compared to them. I like the ideas of mesmer, and have one at level 31, but I admit I’m not that great currently. I’ve read osicats guides and will use those until I’m better with the profession.
But here is my biggest challenge; other mesmers. I’ve got a hard time keeping track of my illusions position and keeping track of the real enemy mesmer at the same time. Has anyone else had this issue? What are some tips for getting better at it?
Mesmer has a high learning curve and rewards smart gameplay. If you stick with it, and maybe spare some bank space for alternate gear sets, you’ll notice you can be a thief, guardian, ranger, necromancer, or all of the above depending on how you spec. It’s probably the deepest class in the game.
As far as other mesmers go, the more you play them, the more you’ll notice. Deceptive Evasion is the most common tell. The Mesmer is hopping around like a frog on cocaine to get shatter fodder up. (Shatter builds are sort of like the d/d ele, backstab thief, HB warriors, etc: Amazing in the hands of a master, but it’s simple enough to use, so the scrubs run for it) Things like food buffs, world completion icons, offhands will be a big tell also, but most mesmers just won’t hold still.
Signet of the locust? It would be more thematic than a life steal.
Went back to mesmer and specced glamour after the nerf. The uplevels are nice enough to spam extra hard to kill themselves to make up the difference.
Didn’t know Mesmers could equip a GS, Staff, and Focus offhand all at once.
Mesmer titan’s grip spec. GS/focus and Staff/Pistol are popular in pvp.
Thematically, I’d like to see a necromancer class more like the Giovanni from the WoD—mechanically a high evasion cc class with low overall damage. More “Ghost Whisperer” than “Frankenstein”. Something that makes me feel one with the machinations, politics and workings of the spirit world.
This profession is on par with other games’ interpretation of the word: A mishmash of heavy metal and goth cliches.

Someone who speaks with the dead, similar to any other mantic art.
From the patch notes, I was hoping dodge-clones wouldnt go hitting random things anymore, but they still do :\
They attack what attacked you last, not your current target. So it’ll hit other critters you kite into, turrets, etc.
It’s purpink.
Or thistle
I like the ideas of “cleanse hate,” acid, and “condi vuln”. The two former seem more likely since DS5 won’t be spammable/stackable.
Speaking of which, what happened to Supreme Commander Busey?
DB needs to pick a celebrity.
