Hey guys… so my friend picked up the game recently and I want to make another character… the three I don’t have so far are engi, necro and ele
I have no interest at all in playing an ele… the gameplay just does not interest me much at all
This leaves me with two choices… engi and necro… I’ve played both to up to 20 and they are both kind of largely unspectacular… I feel like an engineer can have a bit of higher upside but I don’t know, every time I fight a necro in WvW they are a pain in my [insert word here]… this character would be strictly used for WvW with an occasional trip to hang out with the guild (hence why I think engi might be better, more team utility for guild)
but still… probably 90% this character will be used in WvW… what are your thoughts? I like ranged zerker builds in which I can hang out in the back if the zerg and pick people off… who will be more fun for WvW? which of these characters plays better with ranged zerker-ish builds?
THANKS!
I like the Farming nerfs.
I hate people running same stuff over again and players ‘LF cof speedruns’ and seeing Farmers have massive gold and corrupts the market and makes casual/non-farmers having to farm to enjoy the market or other parts of the game.
Just before GW2 released I was playing another MMO that whent from wonderfull to after five years it a fulltime job grinding for medallions, seals, tokens, with dungeons with different rewards values and that makes the easiest quickest and best achievement dungeon to be done over and over and over and over again…I rather take care of real life stuff and get something real and usefull than farming the same thing over and over, days and nights for just some pixels.
I play Guild Wars 2 alot and I am just above an casual gamer I think, I don’t care for the legendary… I play the game for fun, not to earn bragging rights or being the best player in the game or compete with someone.
I guess I am about 20% away from getting all component I need for a Legendary and I haven’t farmed a single time.Tbh i don’t care for the rng,but i do care that the champs can one shot you.
that alone is taken the fun out of the game.
Also temples like grenth takes the ****.That is just how the game works, I had a hard time with this game in the beginning and I was so angry over how easy I die and so on, but this game is more like old Nintendo games.
Once you have learned to moves from your oponent and what to do, not to get hit is the best way… When you figured out how to fight your enemy you can almost handle every Champion in the game solo.
See… but you said this yourself, as a farmer, I hate hate hate farming, I hate it with a passion. But I feel like I have to farm because it’s the only way to get good items. I would much rather prefer to do wvw, or just go explore and do quests, or run around with the guild but instead of doing that, for the last 5 months I’ve been farming… you make an assumption that farmers are these greedy people, we’re not, I personally just want to get one set of good items, I’m not even going for a legendary… we farm not because it’s so amazing and profitable, we farm because the rewards everywhere else are terrible…
you know… honestly if not getting a legendary was the most of my worries, I would be very very happy… I started playing at release day, granted I took a month or so off afterwards and progressed slowly initially, I would say that I’ve been farming CoF P1 significantly on a daily basis… and guess what? I still can’t even afford superior sigils on all my characters (I have 5)… I have one set of skinned CoF gear on all of them (I’m not exactly balling out on a cornucopia of gear for each character here) and most my weapons still have major sigils in them… and I farm a significant amount… I farm 1-2hrs daily at the minimum and probably minimum 5-6 hrs over the weekend and I can still barely afford things… I have no chance in the world of getting a legendary… I just want to gear up properly so I can actually go and enjoy playing the game and not just grind but 9 months into the game, I’ve yet to be able to do that… so, you’ll still see me on gw2lfg (still no group finder 9 months into the game) farming with my warrior who only has one superior sigil in his gear… fun…
You must be doing something wrong, because I have superior sigils and runs on most of my guys and I have a legendary and I’ve never spent time “farming” or selling gems for gold.
well… the only thing I did do that was “extra” was buy another character slot, and leveled up 2.5 characters to 80… but partially… all in all probably spent about 70 gold on leveling… I guess that would’ve gotten me my sigils… oh and I bought the rox bow and quiver for gold too… 70 leveling+ 18 character slot+ 37 Rox stuff= 125 extra gold spent on all that… yea that would’ve bought me my sigils but still man… averaging 5gp for a sigil… let’s say each character has 2.5 weapons on average (some have just 2 handers, some have more… my thief has 6 weapons I regularly use)… that’s 16 sigils required… 16*5= 90gp to equip all the characters with superior sigils… that’s a lot of farming man… even at a generous rate of 1gp per run, that’s lets say 90 runs (some rare drops increase the rate, but it’s not really 1gp either, closer to 80-90 probably after DR kicks in)… at 8 mins a run (also rather generous with CoF being closed all the time these days) that’s… 720 minutes= 12 hours of straight up non-stop farming… and that’s being very generous… it will probably be closer to 14-15 hours of real life farming… that’s about 2 weeks of just farming FOR SIGILS ONLY… if you don’t think that’s rough… I dunno man…
you know… honestly if not getting a legendary was the most of my worries, I would be very very happy… I started playing at release day, granted I took a month or so off afterwards and progressed slowly initially, I would say that I’ve been farming CoF P1 significantly on a daily basis… and guess what? I have 5x level 80s and a random low level engineer to mess around with my friend when we get drunk lol, the engi will never get to 80 so I don’t even count that he exists
But here is the order in which I made these characters: warrior (I don’t play much pvp and you just can’t beat warrior in pve), thief (very entertaining pve and wvw pistol unload troll= super fun to make kids rage), mesmer (don’t particularly enjoy but had to make for easy dungeon runs and to help out the guild), Guardian (boooooring character but he’s so op that I couldn’t justify not having one, I could seriously go to sleep playing him), and my last one is a ranger (I don’t know why people hate on rangers in wvw… 1500 range kills are so easy from the back of the zerg, my ranger is main for wvw)
From what you described, I would definitely recommend a warrior for easy pve and dungeon farming, you’ll have all the gold you’ll want ever

People are completely missing the point of this thread…
I don’t think anyone is arguing that the things in the gem store aren’t good… the issue is that ALL the new content is only attainable through the gem store… which would be absolutely fine if this was a f2p game… but we paid $60 for this game (and some people paid even more for the collectors edition) only to be locked out of all the new additions
This very much seems like the case of having your cake and eating it too for ANet… they want to charge people for the game but also use the f2p business model by reserving any sort of desirable new content for the gem store
Either charge people for the game but then add items that could be just as easily attained just by playing the game or just make this f2p and be kings of the cash shop
If the cap gets increased to 100, I’m 99% sure that I’ll quit the game… I’m just not gonna put that much effort to be competitive again on all my characters… I’ve put in too much time into gearing to start all over… no way… I think ANet would make a massive mistake if they increased the level cap…
Races here are very “balanced” meaning that they really don’t have much of a difference at all between each other…there are a couple of skills that are different but not many people actually use them, they are situational at best…
Difference seems purely cosmetic… just what you want your character to look like… and I guess there is an achievement for getting x number of cultural armors, which you can’t get by playing just one race…
I have fastest internet I could get from Comcast… don’t have a problem with it at all… but ever since March patch I’ve been getting lag in dungeons a bit… it’s still playable but just sometimes something happens to it… never used to happen for me before…
Only if you’re Chuck Norris and your friend is Chuck Norris’ evil twin…
Molten edition here as well… I’ve done a lot of testing of different configurations and this is what I’ve decided on in the end… it’s not the most logical config initially but it works great
Shift- auto attack… it’s not on the Naga but I found myself mashing 1 all the time and it took me a split second to move my finger somewhere else to use actual skills, I couldn’t have that so I moved auto to shift to allow me to have one hand on auto and one on skills
1-4- weapon skills
5- dodge, my finger naturally rests on 5, and since dodge is the most important key in this game, it made sense to put it where I could reach it the fastest
6- F1… quick access to backstab, kill shot, mind wreck, etc
7-9- utils on one row
10- unique
11- heal, directly down from natural 5 rest
12- F2… still on keypad
Z-X- F3 & F4 to finish off the list
Again, not the most logical thing at first but I promise you it works! Give it a go!
Haha… also forgot… if you want to talk about what sieges should be like, unlike what Hollywood tells you, there weren’t many epic and heroic battles… most “sieges” would happen by an attacking army surrounding the castle for months until everyone inside died from starvation… hence why it’s called a siege… would you like to camp outside a keep for a couple of months just like a real siege?
Dude, how old are you?
You’ve determined what sieges “should be like” by watching one movie? That’s hilarious…
If you want to argue what sieges SHOULD look like, why don’t you present some historical evidence and examples instead of ollywood movie…I was at least expecting a history channel program…tthis just took the cake lol
Also, you yourself seem to ignore the hundreds of archers on both sides getting slaughtered by a rain of arrows, not 3 guys taking out the whole castle…
I think you want more something along the lines of that siege scene in Lotr where Gandalf arrives and massacres the entire orc army with his shiny staff…
This is stupid honestly… you’re an already OP ele asking for another buff to eles… you only understand your side of things and just wanna be stronger and stronger
If you make AoE that strong, it does EXACTLY what you are advocating against… the only viable profession in wvw would be an ele to stack these massive amounts of AoE armageddon… then you have the same mindless zerg running around, but now instead of different professions in it, you’ll just have a mindless zerg full of eles
You gotta understand people, they do the simplest thing that gets results… how are you going to on the spot coordinate movement/attacks of 50 people who you don’t know? The zerg exists because it’s easy and effective… the zerg will never go away…people in the zerg will just spread out…
Congratulations, now you’ve killed wvw, you didn’t get rid of the zerg and made ele the only viable class all because you wanted to wipe people out…
Actually… Let’s do this, you can have your uber stacking armageddon AoE if I can take my ranger and insta-kill everyone that my piercing arrow passes through with rapid fire at 1500 range… deal?
CoF is the only dungeon I run that gets contested… AC and HotW both stay open… which brings me to my point… I wonder why more people don’t run HotW… path 1 is super easy… only thing I guess is that they don’t have zerk gear as reward… but the skins are nice, gold reward is there and it’s always open…
Seems like he was running pretty fast there… but maybe it just looked fast… could this be ANet’s version of a “mount”?
Very good point medazolam… I didn’t even think of that… I guess farmers switched to sab for the time being… I guess that could explain it…
I’m 26 and I was towards the tail end of the “gaming” generation… I might just be out of touch with mid-later teens (and I mean why would I be at this point) but I just don’t get the feeling that kids these days are very much into “classic” video games… by classic I don’t mean Zelda, I mean console/pc gaming… I feel like the focus of the next generation is certainly shifting to other things… when I was growing up, all my friends would play games all day long… it didn’t matter if you were in the chess club or played football… everyone was playing video games (and I was not the chess club part of that example)… these days I don’t see many younger players online… once in a while you run into someone who’s like 17… I remember playing on zone.com way back in the day and that place was crawling with 13-16 yr olds… I think ANet is definitely targeting the mid-late 20s demographic because that’s who most gamers these days are… I just don’t think there is much of a teen gamer demographic these days for ANet to even target…
Marnick… Except that they did, right here on this board… I’m currently at work on my phone so I can’t look through the board to find it, but I’ll definitely find the post for you when I get back home in which a mod says that they changed the maw timer to be in line with other world bosses…
Believe me or not, I run CoF a lot… minimum 10 runs a day and I definitely see a difference… the same guesting system was there before patch and you could always get it somewhere… these days it’s contested all day long…
Go do the events then. Can’t rely on the normal players to enable your farming forever. Those unlock events are out of the way for most players and they will stop doing them at one point or another.
Consider yourself lucky you could ride on the back of other groups until now.
Why do you assume that I don’t do unlock events? I escort and do bridge all the time…
I should be investing in a few tin mine stocks, seems like conspiracies are on the rise.
It doesn’t seem strange to you that all of a sudden people are noticing these things? If you dismiss conspiracy theorists and think they’re crazy, why did it take them 7 months to start coming out with these “crazy tin foil theories”… If they/we are so dumb, why didn’t people start the crazy theories from launch? The maw timer was changed and ANet admitted to it… why is CoF timer being changed such a crazy idea?
Believe me or not, I run CoF a lot… minimum 10 runs a day and I definitely see a difference… the same guesting system was there before patch and you could always get it somewhere… these days it’s contested all day long…
Anyone have a feeling that ANet ninja nerfed CoF timer? We already know that the DR formula was changed but it also seems like you just can’t get into CoF these days because it’s ALWAYS contested… it never used to be like this… I ran it a lot before and I run it a lot now and before you never really had a problem getting in…these days it seems common for all 5 servers to be contested…
What a brilliant idea… instead of fixing the dungeon, we’ll just make it so they simply can’t get in…
Hey guys, need some trinkets… is temple of grenth open on any server? I’d like to guest!
Thanks guys!!!
Ok maybe I am missing the point… I’ve done my fair share of these events… I never get anything useful from them… most times I get a rare and a couple of greens… once I got 3 rares and once 2… all the other times it’s just 1… can you guys please enlighten me why else anyone would want to run these besides the monetary reward?
What I’m saying is that it frees you up to do what you enjoy… everyone does these events for a reward… I highly doubt anyone enjoys hanging out in a swamp… if waiting in a swamp is your idea of fun, please be my guest… I’m just trying to help people understand that there are more efficient ways to get the same rewards so instead of waiting they could spend that time on whatever else they enjoy doing… even if it is waiting in a swamp…
They are seriously a waste of time… you get one rare which you’re lucky to get 20 silver for and a bunch of other useless things that if sold will maybe total up to 25 silver…and you guys seriously spend hours waiting for these bosses to spawn…
Why do you do that? It’s so inefficient…
Doing ONE CoF run takes 6 minutes (8 if you’re on a bad pug team) and even conservatively gives you 80 silver per run…in six minutes you can make 3+ times more gold (and get tokens too) than you do waiting for hours for mega bosses…
You might say though… “but I don’t wait for hours, I just go when my guild tells me that the bosses are up”… ok, but even at that rate the best estimate to kill a mega boss would be 2 minutes per boss… add in the time to run there from waypoint, pick up your loot in the end, it probably takes 3 minutes minimum per boss, which at 25 silver per boss still only makes you 50 silver in those 6 minutes that it takes to run CoF… it probably takes a minimum of 3 silver to travel to each mega boss, so your total is a whopping 44 silver vs 80 in CoF… and on top of it all you can now only do the event once a day…while you can farm CoF till your hands fall off…
In fact… in 20 minutes of running CoF (3 runs conservatively) you can make more gold than if you did all of those mega bosses combined for the whole day…
Stop getting upset over these events, they are useless in the first place… no point getting your blood pressure up worrying about these nerfs to mega bosses… do what’s efficient… if you’ve never run CoF, it’s seriously the easiest thing ever to do… compete joke of a dungeon… you have no excuse to not try it… do 3 runs a day, get all your gold, then go enjoy the parts of the game that are actually fun instead of waiting in the swamp for hours…
Yea very disappointed by the ranger patch… quickness on swap was a big part of some builds… that’s pretty much gone now… the buffs to ranger greatsword doesn’t make up for the quickness “nerf” (or lack of relative buff compared to other quickness skills)… it’s duration should have been doubled to 4 seconds
Still at work here… wow if this is true… what a disaster… sometimes I wonder if these guys test stuff before they release it..
Cof runs will now be 2 minutes long with banners… I love my warrior but in no way, shape or form did they need a buff of any kind… ridiculous…
Time Warp and Frenzy were nerfed hard. The net result of this patch was a Warrior nerf, not buff.
Have you ever run cof with 5 warriors? If you have, you would know they can kill almost as fast if not faster than 4+ mesmer… quickness is great but it’s not the end all trait that it’s made out to be… you are doing just as much damage with 100b, just a bit slower… and not even all that much slower… the banner buff is significant, it’s pretty much the difference between running with banners or without before… improve the damage of 4 warriors and throw another one in there and I’ll take that in a heartbeat…also as you know, in any decent cof farming group the mesmer can’t fire off time warp on slave driver because it’s still on cooldown from the effigy…
This patch makes mesmer essentially unnecessary in a good CoF farm group if people learn how to do the boulders on their own…
I’m actually fine with that… I’m not at all a big fan of “1 chain of attacks… kite for 45 seconds” builds… glad those will be done with and people will hopefully play a more balanced builds… just more fun all around
Cof runs will now be 2 minutes long with banners… I love my warrior but in no way, shape or form did they need a buff of any kind… ridiculous…
Another warrior buff… unkillable banners that can be moved and that do way more than mostly stationary spirits… unimpressive patch for rangers… maul got “fixed” to just sort of bad now… all quickness skills durations buffed except the passive swap trait… so yay, another broken trait…
I agree with the OP… I love guild wars… I see myself playing it for years to come but the dungeon difficulty is just too much. I’m an officer in a very active guild of 250+ and I feel like I’m pretty much the only one in the guild that runs dungeons daily. Win a very active guild of 250+ and I feel like I’m pretty much the only one in the guild that runs dungeons daily. t to bother learning it. We have a few people who run fractals but pretty much nobody besides me runs other dungeons. We’re a pretty big guild, we have a lot of skilled players, already completed T2 bounty (I know it’s not T6 but hey, that’s way more than most other guilds have), but the dungeon content still scares people away. I run CoF, AC and lately HotW more (a lot) and even I sometimes mess up. But how can you not? The spider queen covers the whole floor in poison, you can’t dodge that. Kholer shoots through walls with a 1-hit kill attack unless you’re pretty tanky. CoF, the crystals at the end are ridiculous, you get knocked down by the boss, next thing you know, you’re flopping all around the room by chain knockdown from crystals that you can’t dodge, then if you make it back up he hits you with his flamethrower that seems to have 99999 range. The Magg room on p2 is hard even for seasoned runners and almost impossible for a group of casual players that don’t have a full exo set.HotW lol, the guys in the begging just seem to auto kill 2 players at the start no matter what. I still don’t know how they do it cause that area is a mess. you pretty much die if the wolves see you. The ballista often chain knocks you all the way into the back of the tunnel. Dodge you say? Sure you can twice, but that won’t even take you half of the way there. The ballista often chain knocks you all the way into the back of the tunnel. boss you might as well set yourself up for a 30 min fight. None of these things are truly channeling. Some are just too hard, some are just tedious, and some are just unavoidable deaths often times. That’s not fun. A challenge isn’t a gimmick that auto kills you just because. CoF boss for example, get rid of those crystals, they don’t contribute anything to the encounter, they are just an annoying gimmick. Make the boss harder, make him have some attacks worth really dodging so you can’t just stand there 100b-ing him to death. I can see why my guild spreads out across the map and camps dragons. Please make it truly interesting, not just laborious and daunting. The difficulty means that nobody wants to run with new players which detracts even more from New players wanting to learn. Dungeons desperately need some casual content with casual rewards. Make it a 15 min run that’ll reward you with 25 silver that won’t require “4 zerk warriors and mesmer ping gear” group that’s changing but not too hard.I think you’ll see a big influx of players in dungeons!
Good luck anet, I still love the game though!
Oh yea I would also love to have a checkbox in the options that would allow us to skip cinematics that have already been viewed in a dungeon (not just skipping but so the cinematic won’t pop up at all)… so the run isn’t interrupted…
I really like the idea of adding crossbows and shotguns
Necro and guardian will use a crossbow and engineer will use shotguns… also rangers should be able to use rifles… really seems like a no brainer here
What I personally would like…
- Guild halls that a guild can purchase that will show up on the map and the look of them can be upgraded
-guilds will have an economy system that will be able to collect resources and craft items based on where the guild hall is located (placing guild halls in some of mid level areas should attract more people there)
-mobile mini dragons… not guaranteed rare drop but possibly 15 silver plus bag of wondrous goods plus an item that has 10% chance to be rare and 1% exotic?
This would create dragon hunting teams that would go all around the map hunting dragons for loot
-dragons will grow in size with time and loot will be greater
Just some of my suggestions… Seems far fetched but we can dream, right?
Hey guys… I just wanted to share an observation that I noticed about DR… before I used to farm CoF with 3 characters… warrior, mesmer, thief…the first run on each character I would get 60 tokens on each…
Then a few days ago I got my guardian up to lvl 80… the second I completed the dungeon with him, my token rewards became completely different… I now get 60 tokens for the first run and then 30 from then on from each of my alts…
The craziest thing now is that I just did 4 runs before reset… 100% sure I got all of the runs in before day’s reset… went to eat dinner, came back and did another run on my guardian and got 30 tokens… looks like I had still DR on… even with supposed reset of a day
I don’t remember seeing any patch, unless they just recently ninja-nerfed it… but this could possibly have something to do with number of characters you have farming the dungeon… it was fine before with 3… but 4th seems to push my entire account over the DR cliff…
Also could DR “points” reset by the month? I’ll admit I’ve been farming CoF way way way more this month than usual trying to get more gear…
I haven’t taken a ranger to a level high enough for dungeons so I don’t know how bad it’ll annoy me there… maybe set on passive mode it’ll be better… what drives me crazy in dungeons are other people’s pets that aggro everything and their mom and get the whole group killed… maybe I’ll just go with a passive buffer pet…
Awesome! Seems like that’s one of the few redeeming qualities lol
Thanks… Yea I understand that second part… it was just a general question about signet use rather than sos in particular… but by the same logic I’ll grow larger etc etc even if my pet is dead, right?
Say that your pet dies… both your pets die… and I cast signet of stone for example (provided of course that I have beastmaster signet traited)… Will I get the invulnerability even if my pet/s is dead or does the pet need to be alive to “share” the signet?
Thanks!!!
I really don’t know if I can do necro… I’m strongly leaning towards ranger now… the 1500 range just somehow speaks to me lol
People are so quick to judge… yes he can be someone who wants to rob a guild but he may also be a guild leader that wants to protect the stuff of this guild… we don’t know so we shouldn’t judge
I don’t know the tos but I’m fairly sure that you can’t get banned because of it since by allowing bank access, therefore the player was given the permission to take, how much to take is another question but we can’t mandate that, to me bank access= permission to take, therefore you can’t ban for it
Someone gave an example of coming to dinner and robbing the host… that’s not very correct, a better example would be coming to dinner and eating all the food there… that’s being [insert whatever here]… but by inviting you to dinner, the host has given you permission to eat, and you did, a lot… you won’t be invited back but you can’t be arrested for eating too much, you can’t go back on allowing the person to eat… or take from the guild bank once you’ve already allowed someone to do it… not bannable to me, it’s a poor choice by the guild leader/officer… don’t blame others for your poor choices…
I have a mesmer already… I have warrior, thief, mesmer, guardian…
guys… help me with deciding anyone please?
Yea the choice was essentially between a staff nuker ele or glass cannon ranger… I like the eke for the flexibility but also at the same time the gameplay seems too… I don’t wanna say complex because it’s not really complex, I played an ele close to 20 and it wasn’t complex… I would say it’s just… unnecessarily mashy…also it doesn’t seem like there is a logical glad staff build…
Ranger on the other hand seems unnecessarily simple… Traps are a gimmick, shouts seem too situational so as sad as it is, the best utilities seem to be signets…
Overall who do you think will be more fun back of the line nuker… button masher ele or barrage laying ranger?
Thank you very much for the builds! I would almost want the pets to die… I love running dungeons and you have no idea how many times a ranger pet ruined things for us by drawing aggro for a mob
I think easiest is ranger… it’s mind numbing… get a bear, he draws all aggro, then you stand back and shoot… no skill required at all… it’s so easy that it’s what botters run… but in the end rangers are very underwhelming and unspectacular
If you want ease and actual contribution to your team, warrior is definitely the best… early leveling is super easy with a rifle, and greatsword is amazing for dungeons and wvw… plus you have more vit than you even know what to do with
My advice is definitely rifle and greatsword warrior
Got it ether… thank you that cleared it up!
