Correct, and Guild Wars 2 has LAA enabled.

For those of you that don’t know. (Talking to you OP)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wz223b1z(v=VS.80).aspx

That isn’t how it works. 32bit clients can address up to 2GB of system ram, 64bit clients can address up to 4GB of system ram

A 32bit OS can use almost 4GB of RAM. A 64-bit system can use more RAM than is possible to put in a PC. It isn’t doubled it’s exponential.

I know know the difference between a 32bit OS and a 64bit OS. What i’m referring to is the difference between a 32bit .exe and 64bit .exe. A 64bit .exe does not have the capabilities that a 64bit OS does, it’s still limited to 4GB of system ram.

As another poster said, you can use a 4GB patcher, but what’s the point. The game will use no more system RAM than is required to function properly.

Actually that’s not entirely correct. Under a 64bit OS, a 32bit application (with LAA enabled) can access up to 4GB of RAM. While a 64bit application can access up to 8TB of RAM. Though with Windows licensing restrictions (much as with Server editions) the amount of RAM supported by the OS is far less than 8TB. The point is however, that a 64bit application can access in excess of 4GB RAM.

Shadows were on high and with reflections on I drop down to 55-45s when I spin around. Previously it was almost unplayable with reflections on and it was buggy. I could see through walls and terrain in various places.

FPS is more stable now but no real FPS gains. Spinning a circle in various places would cause a massive dip in FPS from 60-30s. Now spinning a circle in the same places only dips 60-52s. There was a slight increase in places like Divinities Reach.

No complaints here.

Did you have shadows and reflections on?

I only get stutter when I turn the camera with shadows above medium and reflections on. Would be nice to play this game with both of those settings on for me…those are the only two options that make me lag, so having them both off keeps my fps from dropping like a rock when I turn my camera.

Edit: btw I haven’t tried the new beta driver yet.

Engineer Problem - Mobility

in Engineer

Posted by: lcizzle.8219

lcizzle.8219

I think one of the main problems with engineers are their mobility. All other classes have these teleports, charges, and gap closers that do not impede movement. Yet everything we have has some kind of hitch or movement stopping animation.

Magnetic Inversion – Cant use it while moving. Counter intuitive compared to all the rest of the skills in the game that are just like this and allow mobility.

Jump Shot – Stops in a hovering position at the end of the jump to stomp the ground. If you use this to get away, by the time you stop hovering and doing damage many of the classes are fast enough to close the gap. Thief on you? HS HS and hes right back on you messing you up.

Rocket Boots – Cool and all but you gotta get up off the ground and by then many classes can close the gap or just hit you from range keeping you on the ground permanently.

Overcharged Shot – Good for getting someone off you but if they have run speed or a gap closer which every one has they will be right back on you instantly. If they don’t get on you their teammate will because once again we are rolling around on the ground.

It just seems pretty lame that every class in the game has all these blinks, leaps, charges and so on and all we do is roll around on the ground and die.

CPU / GPU Tests - Please Help

lcizzle.8219

I don’t think it really matters as most programs read the information from the same place. I have compared many of them and ran a few at the same time and the readings are generally the same.

I used ingame and dxtory for FPS, a sidebar gadget for CPU usage and temps. You can use task manager, performance manager, process explorer or whatever to report the same thing. For GPU I used a sidebar gadget and opened MSI Afterburner at the same time to compare. The readings were the same.

Suggestion, can we have at least a default monitoring tool perhaps? so data gathered would be consistent? I’m still at work will post later (7hr+).

Monitoring Tools (kindly pick or put a suggestion which tool) :

FPS – Probably Fraps or MSI afterburner?
Temps – Real Temp or other?
CPU/GPU usage – Hwinfo?

CPU / GPU Tests - Please Help

lcizzle.8219

Can someone with a beast desktop and a few people with medium / low end systems test three areas for me? You need tools to monitor CPU/GPU Usage.

Resolution (Lowering does not change anything below)
1920×1080

Mount Maelstorm
CPU 20%-50%
GPU 99%
FPS 60s

Divinites Reach
CPU 20%-50%
GPU 99%
FPS 45-55s

WvWvW Borderlands (No fighting – Spawn)
CPU 20%-50%
GPU 99%
FPS 60s

WvWvW Borderlands (Fighting)
CPU 40%-60%
GPU 20%-60%
FPS 1/2 of whatever % my GPU is at.

From the looks of it something extra in the game engine that only occurs in WvWvW is halting/stalling the GPU. I really should run it under a profiler or debugger to see if WvWvW brings in something that is locking up the GPU. Which is weird considering WvWvW is not any where near as graphically intensive as the rest of the game. Its open areas and combat. WvWvW even seems to have a lower draw distance/fog.

Be sure to include your DxDiag for system specs and what resolution you are playing at.

Please keep idle chat and banter out of this post. This is strictly for gathering information.

Agreed. I air on the side of caution especially with desktop parts. Laptops are a little different. I have a 2 year full coverage warranty from MSI. They have some really nice high performance gaming notebooks with support for overclocking and so on. Two years is a long time to sit on the same piece of hardware. By that time it will be moved to secondary computing and replaced by something else and the overclocking for it won’t even be warranted.

Yes well like i said it comes down to personal prefrence and how safe you want to play it. High temperatures do reduce life span even intel has stated it.

BUT since each cpu is individualy different, you can never say diffintivly what temperature is ok. 2 cpus of the same type could burn out at different tempeartures.
I tried 2 3930k cpu’s the 1st didnt OC very well in terms of its stability ..but could get to 1.38v before my air cooling started to become inadiquet. My second 3930k can OC better with lower volts but my cooling can only handle it up to 1.37v.
Goes to show that thermal dynamics of the cpu’s were slightly different and thus each ones threshold was different.

I prefer to air on the side of caution when it comes to expensive components

This is one reason i’m starting to lean more toward laptops now vs building my own systems. Besides being more portable, good performance, and free UPS because of the battery. Most laptops now are modular and everything can be upgraded and best of all they have awesome warranties most of the time. In the warranty window I will run my system ragged and get the most out of it I can and if something blows up it’s covered. Besides running the CPU/GPU higher than 80C vs 85C-90C reducing the life seems to be all speculation. Where are the tests? I mean the CPU lasts 3-5 years instead of 5+? Most people will have upgraded by then, especially in the laptop world.

BTW I am not condoning you run anything at or near TJMax. 99.99999999% of the time you won’t even get near TJMax anyway, most laptop manufacturers set their throttling aggressively so you won’t get near it.

I’m pretty sure Intel isn’t going to set a TJMax that is right at the threshold of their product melting / catching on fire. 100C is probably pretty aggressive. If you are hitting 85C-90C on an I7 laptop chip I wouldn’t worry. If you are hitting 95C+ I would start to worry.

TJMax is just there to stop it insta dieing.

genral rull of thumb is ..once over 85C you are reducing the cpu;s life span.

Thats why most OC’s make sure they stop OC’ing once their cpu reaches a personal set temperature depending on how safe they want to play it.

For example my rig. I decided i would stop OC’ing once my air cooling could not keep the cpu bellow 75c or there abouts. Why? becouse once a really hot day comes along you can add 5c to that making it around 80c (at 100% load). Any hotter and i risk reducing its lifespan.

now desktop and laptop cpu’s have the same tjmax 90-100c depending on make and generation. That doesnt mean its ok to run them a few degress under that number :P

I did a quick search and couldn’t find the heat rating for your 425M. Some NVidia cards are pretty flaky when it comes to temperatures. My old desktop NVidia Geforce GTX 260 216OC is rated for 105C max temperature rating. When it hit 65C it would start artifacting, flashing white, green colored blocks, and locking up games. I always had to ramp up the fan setting to 100% at 60C.

Actually laptop parts are made to withstand high heat. Intel I7-M is rated at TJ-MAX 100C. Once it hits this temp it will auto throttle to reduce heat.

Depending on the laptop and its heat disipation ..you could try OC’ing it a tad BUT do not do it if it already gets hot as standard. The main reason people dont OC laptops is becouse they suck at keeping cool. So if it already gets up to say 80c dont bother trying.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: lcizzle.8219

This does absolutely nothing. Parking is a power management feature. If a program isn’t well multi threaded like Guild Wars 2. The CPU will take the few threads and move them around a few cores continously. This is why some people see something like 4 cores at 50% with a few cores parked. If you unpark them all now it takes the few threads and moves them around 8 cores. This makes the processor work harder for little to no extra benefits. This prevents Windows and other background apps from unparking the cores so they can use them. It heats up the processor because now it can’t park unused cores under heavy load to reduce heat.

I’m not saying any of this is bad, just saying the games a month old. When people get settled in and they lock in the numbers on every server they will start working on some of this extra stuff that’s disabled or not finished yet.

The games free, if you feel you aren’t getting enough M&Ms and Star Stickers go reset and play something else for a bit. This is what happens when you burn through content as fast as you can.

Stopped reading at “No Real Reason to WvW”… Some of he most popular games in the world were about having fun with no incentive in doing good or bad. I remember when people played games to have fun. Now everyone needs little star stickers and m&ms for completing every task like their mommy use to give them when they were a kid. In a few years time it will go from M&Ms and star stickers to needing the game company to pay you a salary to play.

No, but if they’re going to package up the same gameplay we’ve had throughout the MMO world and change the UI a little with some small feature additions, then YES – we need an incentive to play. Some of us like to achieve things in games.

And then you look at a game like Counter-Strike. Had the same 5 maps, no upgrades of any kind, and no advancement/progression system. Yet it was one of the most played online games of all time and it lived on short burst gaming. Play a map, play a few rounds, go on with your day.

The games a month old and plenty of the things people complain about just aren’t turned on yet. Like ladders and leaderboards for SPVP. Theres a wall / monument for this in the SPVP area, its just blank right now.

So many of you are missing the point. Yes, there is fun in WvW currently, without what I’ve brought up. The point is that it’s only fun for short segments. Battlegrounds are fun, for a little while. Eventually though, I, like many others, tire of them and their meaninglessness.

Achievements and cosmetic progress is completely lost on me. I really couldn’t care less. But I get it. Many of you are happy the way things are. I question how long you’ll truly stay interested the way things are now, but that’s great for you!

All I’m offering is an analysis of what I KNOW to be fun for me and many others like me, that is a decade in the making. I think there’s room for everyone to enjoy this game. My enjoyment doesn’t necessarily have to come at the cost of yours.

Notes – From looking at the various settings Arenanet may need to look at their LOD algorithms. A lot of the time LOD filters things out right in my face straight ahead but everything to the left and right of center are not properly culled. LOD should never do 0 for performance. It’s a shame that some of the boosts in PVE do not apply to WvWvW. I could deal with changing over to subsampling for a bit in WvWvW if it gave that large of a boost. Changing resolution does matter in PVE but in WvWvW it only dictates how good my FPS is before you get near the zerg. If the zerg is just posturing and not doing anything my FPS is fine. When the battle starts and all the particle effects starting kicking in the game takes a dive. I’m pretty sure it was requested in BWEs that they tone down the particle effect so melee could see what was going on and to improve performance. Like Blizzard though Arenanet seems to be more worried about how their game looks like a painting then how enjoyable it is to actually play. Another weird thing about WvWvW is when you die. My FPS tanks in fights when i’m alive even when the engine is trying to cull players 2 feet away from me. Yet if I charge in the zerg and die. I can see everyone all around me and my FPS is much better. Kinda like in PVE when you view a vista.

PVE – GPU 70-90% active
PVE – CPU 30-50% active across all cores with 2 cores being parked constantly.
WvWvW my GPU is 50-60% active.
WvWvW CPU is 45-65% active across all cores with 1 or more cores constantly being parked.

It seems my system is not being used to it’s fullest and one of the performance boosts in BWE was something about a graphics operation locking the main thread. I think the game has a few more hotspots like this. It would be nice to hear from a dev on the situation. They are so quick to post on other items yet the #1 problem everyone is having receives no information. In the MMO world silence is deadly.

Anyone I did my part. If anyone else wants to post below something similar for their system and hardware feel free to. I’m sure Arenanet would like the extra information on the problem.

You said you overclocked the CPU. Did you change the bus speed or only the multiplier? If you change the bus speed you also overclock everything on the system bus. These look like artifacts from overclocking the videocard.

You might check your bios and give everything a good once over to make sure you didn’t accidentally change the wrong thing. Artifacts don’t have to show up in every game for it to be a bad overclock.

A lot of the people with these artifacts are also the same ones that have overclocked their I5 and I7s to well beyond intended speeds.

This looks like a game issue as it seems everyone else is having FPS issues, crashes, or the like with GPU’s. I’m glad I can play and I have high quality/frames while I play… but constantly being at warp speed around grass gets annoying :P

Get an MSI Gaming Notebook, its very similar to the Alienware except they don’t charge a premium.

This model is normally around $1899 tricked out but I got it at Newegg onsale and with rebates for $1000.

You can get a tricked out Lenovo that’d be capable of something like this. There seems to be something about their design that makes them absolutely impossible to overheat, too.

By your logic my Amd Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz Black Edition CPU should run faster than my I7 2670QM 2.2 GHz. At least I know who is right and who is wrong on this one.

1) I guess I had to be a little more thorough: raw GHz with a high number of instructions per cycle (be it through a longer pipeline, more ALU/FPU’s, fast last level cache, or better branch prediction etc.). Better? I thought this wasn’t necessary since I never compared AMD’s GHz to Intel’s GHz and the statement holds true regardless of which you pick.

2) I don’t need to know the specs. I look up what intel has in their mobile Ivy line, then look up what nvidia/AMD have for mobile graphics, and notice that a mid-range build from 2008-2009 could match the highest offering they have.

3) If laptops are supposed to be as stronk as desktops, why is my PSU rated at 1250W while I’ve yet to see a laptop brick that provides over 150W? And why can’t my desktop have these divine high-power/high-efficiency parts? Maybe it’s because you trade power for mobility.

But whatever, the “my laptop is best laptop” brigade can keep QQ’ing their hearts out. I’ll continue enjoying the game while you continue waiting for your 500% optimization.

Unfortunately it’s not all about the GPU. If that were the case you would be fine but the CPU still has to run the game simulation and feed the graphics card. This is why games have minimum system requirements and meeting them does not always mean you will have a smooth experience. This is why it’s called “minimum system requirements” not “optimal system requirements”.

lol, you guys know nothing about graphics programming. How old is OpenGL yet look at Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Doom 3, Quake 4, Rage. It’s not about the API it’s what you do with it. Just because Guild Wars 2 uses directx9 c, that doesn’t dictate how good or bad the graphics have to be. If that were the case graphics would never improve if we always had to wait on Microsoft to upgrade DirectX or the committees over at the OpenGL Working Group and Khronus to improve things.

You’re right, I can create a graphic app in DX6 that runs like mud on a i7 SLI system because I didnt code it well enough to take advantage of the hardware, or optimize it well enough to run smooth.

Its an old API that if used correctly, should be able to run smoothly even on systems that have hardware thats a few years old. (on low settings)

Same FPS on LOW and HIGH settings....

lol, you guys know nothing about graphics programming. How old is OpenGL yet look at Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Doom 3, Quake 4, Rage. It’s not about the API it’s what you do with it. Good luck with your purchase then. I know for sure it will run other things besides Guild Wars 2 much much better.

I was actually in the same situation as you a few weeks ago and was just trying to get something better. I almost settled on something not so good but found a killer deal on an MSI GT780DXR that’s normally $1800 for $1000.

I’m willing to bet in events you’ll get the same FPS or less. I have an I7 with a 570M and when tons of people are around spamming a boss I drop to 20-30 FPS. So do the math.

The problem is you seem to be overly excited to get a couple extra FPS when in the end you’ll be sorry. It’s almost October and black friday is near. You’ll be able to get double the laptop for the same price on a sale if you just chill and wait.

Actually I would rather have those numbers then what I do now….events I get so lagged down that I can’t do anything and outside of them, I get low 20’s and sometimes even lower that that when leveling.

At least you get 20-30 in events….I get if I am lucky I get 12…and we don’t get black fridays here nice suggestion though.

You didn’t ask which one is better between the two laptops. You asked if the new laptop is good enough to run Guild Wars 2. It may run it but not very well and that’s all we said.

GW2 launched to soon and to buggy.

Don’t remove the dye from all pieces of gear. Nuff said. How hard is it to change the colors and overwrite them instead of removing everything.

GW2 crashes all the time. Anytime I dye a item and remove the dye. Sound gets loud and bugs out and have to restart it. Low fps on a system that shouldn’t have a problem. Ton of professions bugs.
I like the game and think it has some good new Ideals and fun stuff in it.
Just saying that they should of did more beta testing, Seems like they rushed it to get it out before MOP wow’s new expansion.

No problem. You asked for an opinion.

Here are some gaming benchmarks from notebookcheck on your GPU with the Samsung.

That A6-3410MX may be new but it’s a low power, low performance piece made for netbooks and low end laptops. It’s designed for max battery life not max gaming performance.

The laptop with the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P7350 probably has a crappy video chip which you neglected to tell us which you have. Now with the A6-3410MX you’ll be trading problems. Crappy CPU (Which GW2 relies on) for a better graphics processor. It may run other games better than the Intel system but it’s not likely to push Guild Wars 2 very well.

Anyway, good luck.

Low end? How is that low end? I think its better than what I have which is Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P7350 and I can play on the low settings with this? Not trying to sound like I know everything because I don’t. Just need some more light shed on this before I make a final decision.

The funny thing is while culling was going on my FPS was low. When I died and culling turned off and it was drawing an extra 30-40 people. My FPS was better.
