Playing Guild Wars 2 on GNU/Linux-
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Guild-Wars-2-on-Linux-with-AMD-Hardware/
I wish they would listen but after countless posts on Reddit and here on these forums. I don’t think they are going to do anything. I hope I am wrong, but I have all but given up hope on this developer team to really do anything 1.) transparent and 2.) anything that makes sense/purity of purpose.
We are still looking for players to fill our time slots above. In particular, we are seeking people who want to get into raiding around this time. New players are welcome. All experience levels are welcome.
Greetings!
Do you have kids? Are you a working professional? Do you wish that there was a guild that would welcome you even though you don’t have a lot of time and only can play on weekends?
We are that guild.
Weekend Legends has a strong core; over 15 years of MMO experience. We have been gaming together since Asheron’s Call. We are a small group but looking to expand by finding more like-minded players to join our merry band.
Weekend Legends participates in all gaming activities. However, we want to make a big push into top-tier fractals and raiding. We are a late night weekend guild (Friday and Saturday nights). We have a dedicated Mumble server and other like-minded gaming folks that are looking forward to getting to know you!
We all have kids and other commitments which is why we look forward to gaming late night sessions on Friday and Saturday nights; typical playtime is 10pm EST until 4 am EST. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me here or in-game.

PCIe 1x could mean it’s in the wrong slot or the slot is damaged. Are you able to switch to another? In addition, the card may not be in the socket all the way.
Glad it helped mate. At least it will aid in troubleshooting the issue.
Did you try swapping ports?
-clientport 80
Instructs the client to connect to the game servers over port 80 (HTTP) instead of 6112 (commonly used for games).
Some ISPs may prioritize traffic at certain times, and some networks may block port 6112. This may be useful to avoid such scenarios.
Some ISPs, networks, and other forms of MITM attacks may modify traffic on port 80 which will lead to issues with the GW2 client if this option is used.
-clientport 443
Instructs the client to connect to the game servers over port 443 (HTTPS) instead of 6112 (commonly used for games).
Some ISPs may prioritize traffic at certain times, and some networks may block port 6112. This may be useful to avoid such scenarios.
Some ISPs, networks, and other forms of MITM attacks may modify traffic on port 443 which will lead to issues with the GW2 client if this option is used (this is less-likely to occur than with port 80).
I highly suggest swapping ports…

I play on GNU/Linux; similar to Mac. My game doesn’t crash at all, But my friend who plays on Mac has major issues with the client. His game crashes all of the time on mac client. I’m gonna try and convince him to post here. I recommend what others have stated… use Wine.
Have you used the AMD Driver clean tool and reinstalled drivers? http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Clean-Uninstall-Utility.aspx
I had this issue in the past and it is now resolved for me. I don’t see that you tried the 64-bit client? Do you have antivirus running? Make sure, if on Windows 10, the Xbox App is disabled or completely removed. In addition, do you have problems with any other games. You may want to disable cores in bios to rule out issue.
Do you play any other games? I’m concerned about visual artifacts and the FPS. I’m worried you might have hardware going; likely GPU. You may want to check the fan on the GPU.
Are there any plans to finish the ForwardRenderer? I use AMD products and this argument really helps push my system. In addition, yes, I am a Linux gamer and use the -dx9single argument as well. If you finish it or at least fix the shadow/particle issues in Maguuma, I will send you cake. Thank you :-)
1. d/d condi thf
2. acro staff thf
3. full trapper dh
4. lb druid
5. procmancer reaperbasically anything that can spam the same 2-3 skills over and over again and just win a fight that way.
also thfs tend to think all dh builds are braindead. any dh can be braindead and kill an average thf so it makes sense thfs tend to whine the most about dh.
You must be terrible to be losing duels to a Necro regularly on any class really. They are mainly attrition based (need time to get rolling) group oriented class. That procmancer build has horrible life force management and is easily killed if you can focus it at the start of fights. Nothing spammy about necros either imo at least not in comparison to anything else. This game in general sadly is a spam fest.
For the most part… this is how I feel unfortunately.
This game in general sadly is a spam fest.

Greetings fellow players and, hopefully, ANET developers,
I want to say that I am personally extremely satisfied with the game as a whole. There are some things that I don’t like but overall my playgroup is having a blast! Thank you for that. I wanted to make a post regarding what we like most about the game and things that, we feel, need improvement; specific as I can in this regard. Again, thank you for your hard work.
HoT Maps/Meta Events
We found the maps to pretty amazing in HoT. The scale, events, vertical-ness, and scope of these events all culminate into a meta event which makes sense. We truly enjoyed these maps and events. We felt as though the Mastery Points added entertainment and value to the expansion as well; more on this later. These maps truly provided months of fun.
We loved everything about the maps and meta events in HoT. However, I really would like to dive-in and possibly explain how this can be expanded upon. The primary issue with these events is that they are not very dynamic; don’t change much and can appear/feel repetitive.
I think there can be events that cycle through different types of meta events for different outcomes; triggers for a different meta. For example, failing a meta event would spin-off a different series of events. I think this continual arc would be beneficial to feeling fresh.
Elite Specs
I think Elite Specs were/are a great idea but the amount of power some of these specializations provided were too much. In many cases, they disrupted the PVP scenes and even the raiding scene. The power granted to elite specializations needs to be tuned and examined for future expansion.
Long term character advancement
We believe that the mastery system didn’t provide enough direct character progression in the long-run. The mastery system is really cool for map-specific functions but very lackluster in furthering advancement of our chosen characters. Perhaps this is a misconception as the game is very “alt” friendly; playing multiple professions is encouraged. However, my play group tends to just master one character and only play that one.
We believe that many of the trait lines for most of the professions need work. There are some trait lines that are completely broken with, in addition, multiple skills that either don’t work, are completely ineffective, or lack of synergy with trait-lines. I think long-term character development and the previous statement are what this great game suffers from the most.
Key Moments/Memories
- Stepping foot into Maguuma for the first time was an amazing feeling. The verticality of it all. However, what really made it fun was the scale in difficulty from the core game. We were craving something incredibly more difficult in the open world and this was the start of what provided it.
- Earning my Elite Specialization (Scrapper) loved the concept, despite some of the boring lackluster traits.
- Raiding for the first time was a pretty sweet experience. I have a very difficult time getting groups but that seems to be 1.) my fault for not trying hard enough and 2.) engineer stigma
- Creating my legendary hammer was an amazing experience. The collections were really cool to get through even though I felt it was anticlimactic; ultimately had to goto the wiki to figure out how to finish the weapon.
- PvP has provided my group with loads of fun (unranked).
- WvW has been a hit or miss for us. We, generally, found the maps to be too large and not very enjoyable even in the zergs.
- Obtaining our guild hall was a great experience for four of us. We managed to get it on our own which was a big deal considering the difficulty.
- Getting to the end of Dragon’s Stand for the first time.
I will update this post once I have some more time. I just wanted to get my thoughts out there.
(edited by padreadamo.3986)
The OP highlights how myself and others in my playgroup feel. We are punished for pushing as hard as we can to carry out teams; winning all awards or at least multiples. We cannot fight our way out of our tier. I also made the mistake of trying to be a Rifle engineer in PVP over Hammer. I practiced with Rifle for a few months and did really well in unranked. I didn’t factor in that everyone would be playing meta; my fault.
The thread was not necro’d. I made a quite informative test on WineHQ and wanted the Linux players to be aware who didn’t frequent there while keeping the posts above in-tact. You should probably define what “necro this thread” means because you are mistaken.
I am just about at my end with screaming from the rooftops. We, the engineer community, made our voices heard multiple times with good ideas on our profession forums. There was one member who even compiled all of our posts and brought them to reddit. We really need a response; need to know someone is listening to us.
Jump Shot: The damage of the initial jump has been reduced by 56%. The damage of the landing has been increased by 28%?
Please, explain to me why a ranged class like rifle engineer (who is insanely lacking in sustain and defense against HoT specs) would decide that its a good idea to rifle 5 into a fight? Engineer should have a flat dps buff on all the rifle skills. The current state of rifle forces the engineer player to go defensive utilities in order to be remotely viable.
Jump shot should be an evade frame, blunderbuss should give a blind, and overcharge should not knock the user of the skill back (With all the projectile hate, stab, and low cd stun breaks present in the game, all overcharge accomplishes is kittening over the person using it). Given some form of sustain besides elixir s and gear shield (recently nerfed for whatever reason), rifle engineer can focus on dps and other utilities. However, damage utilities on engineer simply do no damage besides acid bomb, pry bar, and grenade barrage (Grenades are useless though unless paired with the explosives trait line, which is an awful trait line if you want to have a decent build setup). Besides damage utilities that do no damage, engineer is loaded with the most useless and gimmick utilities in the game (Post nerf slick shoes, utility goggles, battering ram, med kit, any turret besides rifle (and rifle turret is only decent with static discharge, another damage trait that does no damage), and Elixir R).
In the end you have a weapon set built for damage that does not do comparable damage to other classes ranged weapons, and a spec that relies heavily on the two defensive utilities, elixir s and tool kit.
Or you can go a bunker amulet and be a potato rifle engi.
Oh and btw, healing turret (best engi healing skill atm) can be destroyed mid cast by something like warrior whirlwind or a vault? That’s fantastic.
I would give you money if I could. This post is so insanely on point and true. The devs have to pay attention. #SayNoToPotato
The link above will take you to WineHQ, search for Guild Wars 2. You should find my up-to-date test with KDE Neon. I have found several fixes to some items as well. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need help getting the game to work on GNU/Linux.

3 month patches is totally fine and close to the industry standard.
The problem isnt balance, its power creep anyway. The more patches you get mean the more power creep you get as they never nerf anything because all the clueless people will cry about it as they dont realise it power creep will make them quit anyway
They never nerf anything? Mesmer would like to say hi.
Engineer says HI too! “Purity of Purpose” /rollseyes
Folks,
We really need to organize and have threads with cohesive discussion and not just complaining and moaning about the situation (latest patch and prior ones, broken skills/traits, et al.). There are countless excellent posts on these forums but we need to be organized and take the situation to Reddit. I have seen numerous posts here suggesting that the devs really only care/read about GW2 on Reddit. We need to take our fight there.
We should cherry-pick a number of suggestion threads, copy/paste them into posts on Reddit to ensure we are seen/heard. In addition, I almost feel as though we need an Representative. We need someone who knows the class inside-out and has been here since the beginning. This person can help us put important data together to be part of our posting.
Thoughts?
Those of you that are getting “Display” numerator errors in your wine log… Are you using multiple monitors (eyefinity)? I’m just curious because you have to add these monitors to your xorg configuration file to bypass this error.
OR
Try completely unplugging any additional monitors, reboot. Try and launch the game at this point to determine if the output error is still display enum.
I’m not sure if there is already solution but it would be of great benefit if different areas of the GUI were completely movable. For example, I would really like to move my buffs/conditions to the right of my character’s head in the game view. In addition, I would like to move my target’s debuffs/buffs to the left.
Does anyone know of a way to do this?
I just signed-up. I am a Yak’s Bend native!
This sounds like it might be right my alley and my playgroup! We are a small crew of about 6 RL friends and family members. There are four of us that are active players on weekends (real-life commitments); late night Friday and Saturdays. When do you folks raid?
Greetings everyone! My name is Padre (Dhamir in-game) and I’m a condition engineer. I have several friends that play on Friday nights (late night EST until the early morning hours). We are trying to find a group of individuals that raids or is teaching players that raid encounters to get through as a regular group on a weekly basis.
In total, we have three members that are regular (Chronomancer/Necro, Thief, Condi Engineer). We really want to raid but have not found a guild that fits our schedule. This is content we very much want to participate in. Please don’t hesitate to contact me here, or in-game about this post.
I submitted multiple bug reports for this issue and sent the report from the crash client. This bug is wasting hours of my time and is a blocker on progressing to rewards in dragons stand.
assertion: (m_sphereradius + tolerance >= m_boxextent.x) || (m_sphereradius + tolerance >= m_boxextent.y) || (m_sphereradius + tolerance >= m_boxextent.z)
Throw this up on reddit as well. For some reason devs look at reddit and respond there more than they ever do here in their own forums.
I like a lot of you suggestions. Problem with E-Gun, pistol, and rifle is the amount of projectile hate other classes have. We need an ability to break through reflects and blocks to even things out and make engie more viable in pvp and wvw.
Agreed about Reddit. Let’s unify for the engineer!
Will you merge the suggestions from my post earlier this week? There is some great discussion in there mostly focused on turrets, gadgets, and gyros. It would be a nice addendum to this post.
Someone here once recommended the “leash system”, that they are slower but have a max range where they automaticly get pulled to you. I’d welcome that. Especially … well … they can’t “fly” over cliffs … T_T
Yea, it’s very annoying. Would appreciate a small rework of gyro ai movement.
Agreed. There has to certainly be something better than what we have now. The leash system is a solid idea.
Gadgets really need to become the “engi signet”. It really fits the concept, IMO.[…]
Simple elegant solution that I think is quite reasonable given the state engi is in currently. You did forget Throw Mine though.
Oh, I didn’t event think the mine was a gadget.
What about “33% chance to trigger a small explosion on auto-attacks (1s CD)”
would be a good combo with explosion lineBoom, done, lets move to turrets
I really like your ideas for the gadgets! It was far more elegant than what I described! Let’s keep the ideas flowing people! Gadgets that have their own buffs and a grandmaster trait that provides a buff to all gadgets passively would be really nifty.
The real problem with Anet’s politics is that the dirty rangers and the stealing thieves are always rewarded, while the hard-working engineers get the short hand of the stick. This has to stop.
I would make a reasoned response to this, but I can’t bear to be in a thread that makes me think about american politics long enough to do it.
Best response. My head hurts. Albeit a funny thread lol.
The problem with Engineer is that our utilities are not competing with other utilities but with weapons.
…To be honest I feel that the only way to make other utilities worth is to limit the usage of kits in our bar or to split every trait for kits and have all of them as grandmaster so that we have to choose which one will be powerful.
This is a great observation. This is certainly true in a lot of respects. I think that the second paragraph speaks volumes about perhaps where the line of thinking should be.
Kits should be able to be drastically improved upon via grandmaster traits. This certainly allows people to be more specialized instead of just throwing a bunch of kits on their bar to maximize damage output.
But for me, I want to see turrets back, gadgets, lesser used kits (looking at you medkit) and ways to make the engie more distinct, not just the redheaded stepchild of the game.
I’m in 100% agreement. I love the engineer, in all it’s broken glory! That’s why I’m speaking up. I will continue to do so regardless if anyone is listening because I love the game, the mechanics of the game, and the Engineer profession. This game provides me with hours of entertainment during late night gaming sessions, which is all I get now with being a dad!
I just think we need to focus our efforts on ideas; even if no one is listening. Eventually they will. I have not really tried other classes except for the Mesmer currently. As you say, I just love the uniqueness of the Engineer.

Rifle certainly needs to get a bonus on range. If you are X distance away, some skills are unblockable or provide a bonus to ferocity.
Turrets need to be reworked or simply turned into a Turret kit? Turrets and gyros are very similar and they inherit the innate ability, or lack thereof, to gain a portion of the players stats.
I think there is most room for improvement with gadgets. There could be really nifty things that can be done with them. For example… Let’s take personal battering ram. If we assign this skill to slot 2 we use it first which gives us the launch effect. Using the skill again, with a required within 5 second use before it goes on cool down, would make us charge the target using a leap finisher finally ending in a stun. The tool belt skill could be a stun break or kept as is. This provides gadgets with a time based mechanic thus providing versatility on their use.
I spent a fair bit of time trying to figure out different builds this weekend and encountered a fair amount of inconsistencies in our traits, skills, and wording of tool-tips.
1. Turrets, Gyros, and “Explosions”
Currently, Detonating Turrets has a chance to proc the trait “Shrapnel.” However, Gyro self-destruct does not trigger this trait. There needs to be more consistency is language and keywords in the engineer traits and skills. Perhaps Explosion should be underlined and next to it should be the amount of “explosions” a particular skill causes?
2. Gadgets and Gadgeteer
Gadgets need to be buffed. They take up a slot and for skills with one or two uses with low synergy over “kits” they need to provide more utility than what they currently do. The Gadgeteer trait is simply not enough to invoke create uses of Gadgets. I see Gadgets as more-or-less a way to provide utility where the Engineer lacks. An engineer would make a gadget to assist them in things they could not normally do. With this in mind, how could we make gadgets unique and/or improve their utility?
I think Gadgets need a unified mechanic similar to “explosions” above or maybe give them a similar mechanic with boons like Alchemy? Perhaps Gadgeteer should be “Gain boons for each Gadget Equipped (Might for Rocket Boots, etc) .” “Boon duration is increased for each Gadget Equipped (+2 seconds).”
3. Gyros and AI
The idea of Gyros and how they “fit in” with the other trait lines needs work. We need some kind of cohesion, honestly, with other trait lines, in general, but Gyros in particular feel like they are “outsiders.” The Blast Gyro only works about 50% of the time. For example, I summon the Blast Gyro and it just sits there and does nothing. I have reported this bug multiple times. In addition, the other Gyros at times, will just disappear even though I have hit the self-destruct. The pathing on Gyros is better than where it was but there needs to be improvement there.
I hope ANet reads this and even discusses it internally. My goal is to provide a means to bring these items to light. I’m frustrated; very frustrated at the state of my profession but it’s important to channel that into constructive ideas.

Thank you so much for your advice. I just pasted to that thread. I didn’t even see it before; overlooked it likely. I made a Revenant and will give that I try. I really love the Engineer and the way certain things work. I just found many of the abilities to be lackluster compared to other professions, then reading the profession forums about things being broke for a “very long time” made me slightly depressed.
Thanks for the encouragement :-)
This is a cross-post and I apologize ahead of time.
ArenaNet, I made a rather large post in the past thanking you for making such a great game. That still stands today! However, as a paying customer (I use the store often to support you folks and continued development as many others have and are), I feel the need to express my thoughts regarding some of the Engineer profession changes.
I try to participate in every game mode. I have not done PvP yet, but I have done WvW, Raids, et al. I feel as though the changes to the Engineer in this patch are rather lackluster. The engineer is my favorite class and many of my skills feel like they don’t have purpose for damage or utility. I think more drastic changes were needed because now I need to wait another 3-4 months for the next update to change things (in another small way).
I really love the concept of gyros. However, some of their tool-belt skills are just bad, the gyros should be buffable (at the very least if they can’t inherit our stats). Turrets are not effective. The gadgets are not effective. In addition, the traits that affect these items are also not effective. I feel pigeon-holed into using the “highest” damage skills and one spec. It’s discouraging when I look at the Raid LFG/LFM and I don’t see any need for an engineer.
Perhaps I should just roll another profession and move on?
I posted here because it doesn’t seem that any devs have posted on our engineer forums and perhaps other professions may feel the same way. On a more positive note, the content added in this patch blew away my expectations. Thank you!
-Padre
I can understand that! I have seen some rather poor responses to questions there in the past. That was another reason I posted here. I didn’t want to spark a debate and have the post derailed.

Thank you for the informative post! I’m surprised things as simple as “tooltip updates” have not been fixed. Very odd. Thank you again.
I noticed that the Rune of the Mesmer does not update any of the tooltips on our stuns/dazes. Is this because the trait “Impact Savant” actually replaces the durations?
I completely disagree. Dragon’s Stand is by far one of my favorite aspects of the game. I find the three lanes to be rather different. The entire map comes together into a culmination that is epic in scope/scale. I truly enjoyed this content.
My signature states my stance on this. I have also made a very detailed post regarding GW2 on Wine within the WineApp database for GW2 64-bit and I made a post on the “Players Helping Players” forum for maximizing performance using AMD hardware and the GW2-64 bit client.

Expansions should drive up hype, press, and bring in players. Heart of Thorns is what brought me + 5 people back for the long haul. Prior to HoT, I played for a month. I am not 8 months in and loving the game and the diversity it brings in playstyles and entertainment. I hope they continue with the expansion model. Although, small DLC packs wouldn’t be a bad idea in-between expansions.
I really wish I could have conditions displayed to the left of my character’s head model. In addition, I wish I could see the conditions in the 3D view to the right or left of all foes around me.
I would love to see statuses, conditions, and break bars in mobs’ overhead name plates. I’ve missed the start of more than a few break bars in boss fights because I was busy watching the boss itself and not the placard at the top of the screen (especially hectic ones like the Vinetooth, where evading the boss’s attacks is a full-time job, but jumping on the break bar immediately is critical to a successful event).
Maybe even make it configurable so people can manage the clutter, with options for showing floating indicators on “none”, “current target”, and “all enemies”.
Completely agree! We need this!
That video is great! I’m actually the one who posted on it some time ago! :-)
I’m not sure if the -forwardrenderer argument actually removes those items. I certainly know it doesn’t render terrain shadows and some small particles in Maguuma properly, but it’s hardly noticeable now that I’m used to it.
Is there no one out there for us? We are still seeking the above post.
