I would liked for the mount to be even more “physical” and less “gamey”. What I really like about what they currently showed is that you have a turn radius and an acceleration/deceleration. But I would have loved if they had gone all the way with that. Mounts having different gaits with different speed with a higher turn radius at higher speed.
I’m still waiting for a another game that did mounts controls as well as red dead redemption. I know this is an mmo, but a man can dream.

Unreal Engine 4

It would take 3+ years to do it. It would be like starting the game development from scratch. It’s not just about shifting all of their maps and characters and monsters. It would require completely recoding the entire game. Every single event. All of the dialogue. Every single tiny asset. It would involve retraining all of the staff to deal with a new engine. Redoing all of the in game movements. The engine isn’t just about aesthetics, it runs most of the game… You’re also grossly underestimating how much game development costs. They would burn through all of their money (and then some) doing it, and they would be highly unlikely to make new sales as a result of the change. Meaning they would end up bankrupt…

To be honest. It wouldn’t be as hard or timeintensive as you claim.
I mean, just check out OpenMW. Those guys are reimplementing the morrowind engine from scratch and it took them like 6 or 7 years with 2 or 3 really active developers. And those 2 or 3 developers aren’t doing this fulltime. They are doing this as a hobby and they are completly reverse engineering the game. If you have a team of full time developers with full documentation it will be much faster.

Ranger Pet Glide Bug/PSA

When you land after a glide you will always have your first pet appear next to you with full hp. Meaning you can rez/reset your pet by doing a quick glide off a slope or off of any other small elevation. This way you can avoid the long cooldowntimer on your petswap if your pet died.

… at least according to the White Knights anyway… that we were only 1% of the player population who were busy whining on the forums while everyone else was (ahem) busy playing the game ?

So what changed. I guess ANET knew all along that casuals made up the majority and were less willing to put up with the grind while hardcores would stick with the game no matter what.

Anyway… THANK YOU THANK YOU for the Hero Point change ANET !

The fact that you have a CPU with horrible single-thread performance is not Anet’s fault.

It’s an MMO running on a old engine with a d3d9 renderer… there’s nothing else to it.

The fact that they use an old engine with a d3d9 renderer is their fault though

CPU is AMD PHenom II X4 955
Now have Nvidia GTX 970. I run everything high graphics all the time and I’m always fine.

I used to run a Radeon 6870 until about a year ago. I had to keep my graphics low for WvW but was fine everywhere in PvE.

My computer is old, 2011, only runs 3.2 GHz.

Why don’t you post up all your specs?

I have the same cpu overclocked to 3.6 ghz and a gtx 960.
I often struggle to get more than 30 fps in some parts of HoT, even when no players are around and nothing is going on.
Character Limit and Character Quality set to low or lowest to maintain playable framerates during events.
So I have a hard time believing that it runes fine for you.
Or you have a different definition of fine.

EVERY other mmo i have EVER played that introduces new classes (which is essentially what new specs are) starts you at level 1.

and you know what? if i could start a brand new engineer at level 1 with scrapper, i would RATHER do that than the current system. why?

lets use wow. Monk came in MoP, i started one, when i got to 80, i was ON PAR with my players power as the mobs i was fighting in Pandaria.

As it stands now, when i enter HoT maps on a scrapper, i am BEHIND normal level 80 power by a full trait line in a POST level 80 enviroment.

so going back to Mists of pandaria, as i leveled, 80, 81, 82, the world around me got stronger as i did and i PROGRESSED .

as it stands now in HoT im not PROGRESSING im simply catching up to where i SHOULD have been as a level 80.

does it make sense now?

Now you are just shifting your argument, but I will humor you.
Dozens of games don’t let you instantly start any class. Bravely default or some of the final fantasy mmos.
But even then, this is not a new class. This is a specialization. It’s like an advanced class in other games. Where you have to level through the base class to gain access to the advanced class.
And you are honestly telling me that you do not have 60 or close to 60 hero points on your level 80 character? The only way that is true is that you play really really weirdly, or you just boosted him up to 80 which in turn means that you don’t even know how to play the base class yet. So why not start with that?

What is the problem? You can play right away with elite specs, not fully explored but you won’t get something without work, right? I think it is pretty normal to level up to get the new stuff, or do I miss something? An MMO shouldn’t hand out everything on a silver platter or people will leave in masses after burning through the content when they realize there is nothing to do.

After 3 days I am well over 50% into the elite spec. I hope though they will do some things more accessible like the hero point challenges: make them veterans or easier to kill champs: it’s frustrating to wait for a party/group to fight them.

i honestly dont think i could have been any clearer, i honestly dont

im not asking for EVERYTHING as you put it. im asking to play the new spec i paid for.
and as you so eloquently put it, i DID work for the elite spec, i went to work and made 50 dollars and bought the expansion. Im here to play a game not work. Now all im asking is if its going to change, or im going to take another 50 dollars i worked for and buy a different game.

Sorry, but your argumentation could be used by anybody for anything in the game. You are not playing this in a vacuum. What if somebody asked only for having instant access to legendaries. He is not asking for everything, just legendaries. And another player asks for instant masteries. He is not asking for everything, just masteries.
Do you see where this is going?
There is a very good reason why in games like legend of zelda or metroid or any adventure/rpg your character isn’t at full strength right from the start. Progression is a very important part of any rpg. It gives the player incentive to keep playing and a feeling of accomplishment when his character gains new skills. The instant gratification of having everything unlocked from the start may feel good at the start but can quickly turn into boredom. That is why this stuff isn’t unlocked right from the start.

And your argument that buying the game gives you the right to have the elite specialization instantly unlocked is so stupid I don’t even know where to start when I want to argue against that. So here is my best try:
1. You didn’t buy the elite specialization, you bought access to heart of thorns
2. You probably don’t complain about not being able to play the last level of a mario game the first time you turn it on.
3. You probably don’t complain that you have to unlock characters in beat’m’up games by playing the game
4. You probably don’t complain that about not having the best equipment in monster hunter, when you start a new game
5. You probably didn’t even complain about your character not being lvl 80 when you started it(which is pretty much what you are complaining about right now)

Don't qq about solo, get better

pfanne.9783

I don’t care if I can or can’t solo it, what I care about is the fact that I personally find it more frustrating than fun. That combined with the massive mastery grind makes me feels like I’ve wasted my money. If I was playing alone, I would have tried for a refund.

I spent about $60 and got the whole base game to play with. 1, 500 hours of content. I have played the expansion for 3 days and I would already have everything if not for the fact a lot of it is hidden behind an experience bar.

What mastery grind are you talking about!?
Most of the hero points are available after you get the basic movement masteries. They can be unlocked in a matter of a few hours.
If you are to lazy to find the easy hero points yourself, use a guide.

GW2 playability has been fundamentally altered with HoT – there is no arguing that fact. To suggest the issue is that casual players “Get Better” is bullkitten. They changed the game, didn’t tell us, and took our money.

Just NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO!
They touted every chance they got that HoT would have challenging open world content! People played the beta. There are videos of it. People wrote articles about that stuff.
If you cannot inform yourself about a purchase you make you don’t get to go on the forums and act all surprised. That’s just morally wrong and disingenuous:
Here is an interview with Colin where he states how they focused on making HoT engaging and challenging.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB5YW4YqizY&feature=youtu.be&t=5m50s
They announced this ahead of time!
Secondly:
They did not take your money. You gave it to them willingly. They publically announced what the game would be about and you didn’t listen and now you complain because you imagined they’d create some faceroll farmfest for you.
Your attitude is so backwards it’s hard to comprehend.

How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

You cannot infer anything statistically relevant with that data.
First: The sample size is way to small

Third: Angry comments are more likely to spread on the internet. There is research about this:

So is leveling.

that is indeed true. i have skipped that part with tomes on every character except my first one.
however, i would argue that leveling is such a traditional and engraved mechanic in rpg games that you just can’t make one without.

Leveling systems in RPGs is relatively new, didn’t become the mainstay until after the WoW/EQ era. Prior to that it was mostly a skill system, which is more RPGish, leveling is just easier to design and creates a more linear gameplay.

I am sorry, what?

Go ahead and explain what you think is nonsense.

Getting those hero points is really not that hard. Some may not be instantly achievable, but hey, there are other ones on other maps. Try your luck over there.
Getting the first few masteries doesn’t really take long either. Now you can traverse alot more and discover alot more places. Do other events/adventures and gain some more xp. Oh and btw have you done any of the story missions yet? Try one of those. Or just fight random mobs. Some of them can be quite the challenge.
This is how I’ve been playing the game and it has been a lot of fun.
That is why I have a hard time understanding why people cry about having to grind all those masteries.

i havent seen one person say this. dont make things up just to try and make your uninformed point stronger.

come on man. why complain about complainers if you dont even know what theyre complaining about? just because people are complaining about the grind doesnt mean they want everything immediately. there are inbetweens you know… shocking that you strawman this and completely ignore valid criticisms and discussions just like everyone else.

Why complain about complainers complaining about complainers if you don’t understand that he doesn’t see their issue of stuff taking too long as an issue at all, because he is of the opinion, that it doesn’t take too long but just the right amount.

People have a specific request: Let us unlock and play with the elite specs and go through the expac with that spec. It’s not asking everything, it’s asking for that one thing only.

I actually don’t want everything handed to me, in fact I want the opposite: I’d like to progress and work towards many different goals, at my own pace, using the build I want.

If they would just make elite specs a 60 hp unlock like the rest 99% of the qq about HoT would be gone instantly. It is all people are asking for, and it’s very reasonable.

I really don’t see the problem here.
This is still an RPG. Those heavily feature progressive learning of your stats, skills and abilities as a metaphor of your character getting stronger and more knowledgeable.
You invest 60 hp(and who doesn’t have 60hp on a lvl80 character?) to unlock the weaponskills and base stuff of the new specialization.
And now progressively as your character gains experience with said specialization you unlock new traits and utilities. This fits perfectly into the narritive of an RPG.
I really don’t see why people are making such a big deal out of this.

I wouldn’t even complain about grinding the hero points if they were at least
soloable and don’t need a group .. and also don’t give any reward to players that
already made them, so nobody is interested helping you.

Have you tried opening an LFG to get hero points?

Nope, since i normally like to play at my own pace and take often a break because
of different reasons. And so the whole design of HoT zones are simply totally
unmotivating for me since alone you are stuned, knocked down and whatever
all the time especially when a beetle vet with 3-4 adds adds to a mushroom vet
with also 3-4 adds .. and you can’t do anything than lying on the floor waiting
for your death.

So as long as Necros don’t get skills that give 1,5 minutes stability ever 2 minutes
or whatever, my motivation to go into those areas is -1

Why do you try to win fights against enemies that obviously seem to be too hard for you? Wait for some other players to arrive or go somewhere else. Not everything is meant to be done alone on the first try.
And alot of people don’t mind teammates going afk for a bit. Just tell them upfront you might have to leave from time to time. They will probably just happily keep doing other stuff as a team of 4.

To me complaining about the fact, that you have to play the game in order to progress is so hypocritical. When all we’ve asked for these years were end game progression, and character progression, and now that they are giving them to us, you complain. What’s the next thing gonna be, you start complaining about the golden city being to gold? or the jungle is too green, and that you need a guide to hold your hand rofl…

Did the defending and building up camps thing, took the chopper up to the canopy to find a champion that one shot me, not very fun. Tried 3 different choppers/canopies and same thing, this stuff needs to downscale if enough players aren’t around.

That was one of my favourite moments in the expansion. Taking the chopper into the canopy. Using a bumper mushroom that puts you right in front of 3 Champions. Making a weak attempt to fight them until you notice that there is no chance in a million years you can solo those meaty kittens and diving off the roof of the world back into the jungle to glide away and life to fight another day.

Character progression is about improvement. Unlocking an elite doesn’t improve your character or it least it is not supposed to because of pvp balancing. That is why I say elites have nothing to do with character progression. The mastery system on the other hand actually gives you advantages once you achieve them over players who don’t have them.

Sorry, but I am always surprised by how happy people are to announce their own gullibility to the world.
You spend 885 pounds on something without doing research or waiting for reviews.
It’s not like it wasn’t known beforehand that you would need 400 points for the elite specialization.
You deserve being disappointed. Seriously. I hope this taught you something.

Oh and by the way. We don’t need 50 threads on the same topic. Just post in one of the other 49 threads.

It wasn’t. It was just announced a week 9 so before release. ????

That means he still had a whole week to cancel his preorder, or not preorder in the first place, or preorder like a day before release if he was okay with it. But noooooooooo, he had to preorder it. I mean he saved like 10 pounds on that free character slot that he gets for preordering. Totally worth the investment of 885 pounds. Couldn’t wait a week, because he just had to have it.
I mean who could have thought that anything could go wrong with that plan, because nothing ever went wrong on launches of games. Especially on launches off MMORPGs.

It still doesn’t change the fact that the hero points are obnoxious and senseless. Why are they not letting us play the new elite specialization and don’t tell advancement because there are plenty of other things to to advance your character such as masteries. Also if you checked reddit they hinted that the new specialization wasn’t going to be grundy and then we get this and that question of how many hero points needed had been asked during the announcement of spirit shards. Don’t you think it’s shady that they waited till the last minute to announce that 400 point requiremen?

Have I ever argued about the validity of needing 400 hero points to unlock all of the specialization?
My only point is that I find it hard to find sympathy for some guy that goes on the forums and creates a new thread with his sob story of him being and dunce and investing 885 pounds into something he doesn’t have all the facts about, when he could just as easily have posted it in one of the other 50 threads about the topic of hero points and specializations. But his story is soooooo special that it needs its own thread where people all just have to regurgitate how shocked they all are about news from a few days ago.

So much of the new content is gated behind massive amounts of grinding, it makes you wonder what we actually paid for. I really don’t know why they changed their game philosophy so drastically with HoT.

Or you know, its not them who changed their philospohy but us who changed the definition of grind.

Elite specs cost more hero points than all your other traits and skills combined, I’m pretty sure we’re not the problem here.

And you get like 10 hero points per challange. So you only need to do 1 or 2 challanges to unlock something new. On top of that you probably had a bunch of hero points banked, because it’s not a new character.

I don’t have much experience with dota 2, but I highly doubt that the heroes in that game are balanced. There are probably heroes that are picked or banned in like 90% of the pro matches and heroes that are never picked or banned. The main balancing in mobas comes from the banning/picking mechanic. As long as heroes aren’t stupidly op the picking/banning mechanic takes care of any imbalances in the game.

All I want for AI navigation is jumps. AI should learn to jump and do things like skipping over small obstacles. If you can get there by jumping, shadow-stepping and enemy creatures that can jump should be able to get there too.

That includes every single pet and summoned creature. All of them should be able to jump and reach any place players can reach with simple jumps.

The problem with jumps is that you either have to preprocess the navigation mesh to find all possible jump positions or have more complex pathfinding.
Preprocessing often consists of handplacing jump points all over the map. Which is pretty much impossible for a game as big as an mmo.
The algorithmic approach would probably generate an enormous amount of jump points which would increase the size of the search space for the pathfinding algorithm by a lot.
Having a more complex pathfinding algorithm that finds places to jump on the fly is also way to demanding for a server based games with 1000 of players.

Another solution for better pet AI would be to have the navigation mesh and pet AI client-side and simulate a local player character that actually is a pet. That would allow for more responsive AI but also increase the bandwidth from the player to the server. It would also be another source of potential cheating. Another drawback would be that the whole AI infrastructure has to be available on the client or a simplified AI has to be written that only runs on the client. Resulting in more code to mantain and potentially a lot of duplicated code.
As a ranger player I like the idea of having really responsive client-side ai, but since pet have always been overlooked in gw2 I am not really hopeful for big improvements.

Yeah this isn’t WoW where you stand still and your character magically dodges/blocks attacks, and having loads of skills on your bar(s) as you do in WoW doesn’t mean you actually use them all, having a bloated skill bar doesn’t make you any better of a player.

No but managing them and knowing when to use a rarely used skill contribute. Let’s say you have a thief in GW2, and if we could equip all our abilities we would see a very specific moment when you know using scorpion wire would be a great idea, pull something else into the big AoE combo fields. Well, too bad, you don’t have it equipped so despite having the ability you can’t equip it due to UI limitations. Same principle applies to basically anything else.

The skillsets we’re allowed to have is too simplified: five weapon abilities, one heal, three utility, and one elite. Being allowed to have more abilities would open up further scope and depth of play.

By that logic having 10000 skills at a time would be even better.
MOBAs have even less skills available and nobody is complaining about how these games are shallow and you don’t need any skill to play them.
Just having alot of skills available doesn’t really mean games are deeper.

Combat -- Horrendously Bad?

To be honest, I think you should just play another game.
You seem to dislike all the things that people enjoy about gw2.
If you want an mmo that has more classical combat, but isn’t wow or swtor you can try Final Fantasy 14.
It has a 2 week trial, if I remember correctly.

What happens when your enemies have retatlation on them?
Does that turn into a giant feedback loop that results in everybody dying?

You alternatively can try to run it on Wine or PlayOnLinux. Core GW2 works flawlessly (almost) , maybe HoTS will run.

It works flawlessly, but nowhere near as fast as on windows.

I can’t really check it right now.
So this is just a guess/theory.
Have you tried turning your pet from passiv to aggressiv in pvp and then going back to pve?

Honey boo boo, take a look at how many keys need to be pressed for the plethora of elementalist’s skills.

Now take a look at the typical console controller and a find the same amount of buttons to do that and everything else an ele does. Or a engineer.

Nope. Unless you’ve got some mega next level space age controller then not gonna happen. Ain’t nobody got time fo dat.

It’s really not that hard to find a working keybind for guild wars 2.
Since at any moment you only have like 17 (10 skills+4 F buttons+weapon swap+jump+dodge) actions you can do. If you divide that into groups of 5 which you bind to the right side of your controller (4 face buttons + 1 shoulder button) and use the left shoulder buttons to switch between those 3 sets of 5 actions. It’s pretty doable. I did it and it actually works quite well. You won’t be able to compete with pc gamers, but since the console version would have it’s own servers it wouldn’t really matter.
That said, I don’t think GW2 will come to consoles since it won’t run well on them. They are pretty much just customized AMD apus for notebooks and we all know how well this game runs on even the fastest desktop AMD cpus.

Pet targeting

As a ranger I like to target pets and clones for my hunter’s shot since I know they won’t dodge it.

I'm not one to complain....

call someone bad…. expect positive result. I will try that sometime.

It’s called negative reinforcement.

And it doesn’t work in online matches.
Your are not your teammates mom and they don’t value your opnion.
If you don’t phrase your critique as delicate as possible people will think you are an elitist and ignore what you say or do the opposite.
Have you EVER seen someone react positive to negative critique in an online match?
I can’t fathom that people still don’t understand that lashing out at your teammates is the single most dumbest thing you can do in online gaming.

I’m not saying powerranger is the best build in the universe and works great in the very competitive scene, but those claims of “I kill all rangers in less then 9 seconds ’cause they all noobz and the build sucks” are BS. As a powerranger you have quite a few tools to keep people off you for a bit.

oh please.
the elitism in here is strong.
I’m average at best and I play against other average players and I manage just fine and so do a lot of other rangers.
And all that 10 seconds or less talk is bullkitten.
Most powerrangers use signet of stone and that lasts for 6 seconds.
After that you go invis or use the GS block for another 3 seconds or something.
And you can probably dodge twice for another 3 seconds.
Oh and did I mention lightning reflexes?
You have that too.
Thats like 15 to 16 seconds of being untouchable as a powerranger.

So is NightBlue playing GW2?

well at least nightblue isnt a kittenbag like sodapoppin…

Soda is a pretty nice guy, he swear a lot but that is just his personalty, he just did a charity stream last sunday and raised 10k for charity.

only kittenbags do charity streams in my experience. they make up for being bad people by giving back to society, and it makes them not as bad in general, but still unpalatable at a smaller scale.

By your logic I am surprised you aren’t doing charity streams daily.
The saltyness of people in this thread is incomprehensible.

This kinda takes me back to release when the Servers handling all the guild related stuff were completely overwhelmed.
But since nobody else seems to have this issue that really sounds weird.
