Superior Rune of Strength

It’s funny that this Rune adds 45% Might duration while almost every other Rune that focuses on a specific boon adds 30%. The fact that this ALSO adds 7% damage in the presence of the easiest to maintain boon is icing on the cake.

Odd that they previewed Rune of Strength and it happened to be one of the two best buffed runes along with Rune of Exuberance. I think a lot of people, and thus the market, were expecting other runes to receive a similar bump. Instead a lot of other runes remained stagnant in comparison.

It’s very peculiar that this runeset gets 45% while others get 30%. That feels like an oversight that’ll probably get corrected.

In the meantime, sell em while you got em. The sell price on the TP is over 14g as the time of this post

3 PTV / 3 Zerk. With the upcoming change to Ferocity, there won’t be different percentage tradeoffs per piece so I’d take the PTV in the highest stat slots, so Chest/Legs/whatever.

That gives just a pinch of survivability for WvW and works with every power based build out there.

You can use the set in PvE, though the real issue isn’t what stats are on the armor, it’s what runes you are using. Anything but scholar and it’s a noticeable difference in DPS, and scholar isn’t ideal for a general purpose power sustain WvW build (see: traveler/divinity/speed/etc).

TLDR; Without changing runesets each time you go pve → wvw, you are screwed from a min/max perspective. Just bite the bullet and make 2 sets. It’ll still be cheaper than 1 set of light ascended armor!

Great guide!

Post patch it looks like scholar will remain top DPS for runes, but with ruby orbs potentially seeing a huge nerf I wonder if that will open the door for strength runes?

In pugs where I can’t stay above 90% (and fights take a bit longer) I’m not sure there’s a better option, especially with the buffs to using an entire runeset?

Make Ferocity scale like armor reduction

in Profession Balance

purgatoryz.6038

The damage calculation/reduction isn’t linear, but that doesn’t mean toughness isn’t linear. You are looking at it from the wrong perspective.

For a constant vitality, each point of toughness you add will increase your EHP by the same amount. At no point do you reach some cap of “diminishing returns” where your EHP starts to go up by less than a previous amount.

It’s the same with every stat in the game.

If you have a ten dollars, and I give you a penny, your net worth goes up by 1 cent. If you have a million dollars and I give you a penny, your net worth goes up by 1 cent.

Is there a reason just removing critical damage from the game entirely and making base crit chance 100% instead of 50% wouldn’t work? Obviously the armor sets would need to be changed, but that’s minor and something we’ve lived through once before (and would be welcome if it means Ascended can permanently swap stats like legendaries can).

You would have to make all gear 2 stat gear. Which would be stupid. The only reasonable change they can make is make crit damage a stat similar to other stats. Eg. 76 critical damage = 5% critical damage.

This doesn’t seem too unreasonable. They pick a ratio and stick to it for all pieces of gear. Makes min/maxing easier too.

Or…add a soft cap with actual diminishing returns. Depending on how diminishing they are, I could see people swapping a few (or several) pieces of zerk for knights/ptv.

I still don’t understand why nerfing the armor is the solution, though. But if they go this route it’ll likely be one of the two above.

I sincerely hope they don’t have some kind of knee jerk reaction here. Since zerk is the meta (not really a meta, because it’s been unchanged) in PvE it’s probably safe to say that a very high percentage of all armor created or worn has a critical damage modifier.

If they make changes they need to take into consideration the thousands (millions?) of collective hours of farming/crafting/grinding that’s gone into people acquiring their current gearset.

As i said elsewhere DPS is not the issue..

Why LFG is full of LF heavies?
Because 5 zerk eles on AC would mostly fail horribly unless in the hand of really good players.

You can instead get that 1000 AP warrior and expect to do his job…..or just fill the 5th slot with another profession…you can Always keep them alive with guardians, ress and boost their dps with banners…..

It’s quite the opposite: 5 zerk eles on AC would be amazing.

How do I get 10k+ meteor crits in WvW

in Elementalist

Posted by: purgatoryz.6038

purgatoryz.6038

Im guessing you saw a screen shot of that in WvW.

Here is the trick; balls to the wall zerker staff 30/20/0/0/20, can also do 30/20/0/10/10 for more damage. Cast meteor shower, stay in fire, cast tornado.

Tornado actually doubles your amount of power, so a 6k meteor will hit 12k, I have personally hit 13k on what im guessing was an upleveled toon or some poor squishy.

Traits to focus are 10% on fire attunement, 20% more damage to <33% hp targets, 10% crit damage increase on arcane, 10% damage above 90% hp coupled with scholar runes, blasting staff.

Tornado does no such thing. It triples your base power (which is 916) and doubles your base precision (which is also 916).

Crit damage and damage modifiers are the best ways to boost tornado shower damage. Power has incredible diminishing returns, and you will get about 41 crit chance for free from tornado.

Power, or any other stat, do not have diminishing returns. They all scale linearly. An increase of 100 power, for example, will add the exact same damage amount per swing regardless of your current power.

Full DPS thief in fractals... am I an idiot?

purgatoryz.6038

Just a stupid question: what if you don’t finish a fractal run in 45 minutes, but only in 55. Will the world end? I will never understand this obsession with speedruns. The point is to play with friend or friendly people and have fun during it, so who cares if it’s longer by 5-10 minutes? Basically you want to play a certain content LESS? So you don’t enjoy it? Then what’s the point…? Also “it’s a dps race because the longer the fight the higher the chance of wiping” is a total bullkitten. CDs end. If you can survive for 20-30 seconds, you can survive for any lenght of time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about 3 hour runs with constantly dying partymembers, but runs where people have god forbid PVT armor or 15 acro or something like that. I agree with trying to get so close to zerker and ideal builds as possible, but saying something like “if you’re not full zerker and best build, you are carried by the group and make them die” is just total bullkitten and discourages people from playing thief even more.

Because you need to understand that simply completing the content isn’t enough. Literally anyone can finish a run, with any gear. Some us strive to better ourselves by going high risk, high reward (the reward being a faster run). In PvE, faster is universally agreed upon as better. You may not like, or understand, that concept, but it is what it is.

Thieves are awesome for arah, especially pugs because you can help everyone skip the content, not just blast through it on a warrior leaving everyone else to deal with the aggro/poison clouds. Some of the top guilds have run arah very quickly with a thief in their group.

In terms of the content itself being “easier”, well warriors win hands down. The extra HP alone makes lupi a lot easier.

You linked the same thing twice. You’d like to see a warrior beat 6:47? Uhh, take your own advice and use google bro

Okay, a thief is 6:47 (or 5:50, w/e). Still way behind a mesmer/guard. I pulled the 8 min number from reddi a while ago, the last time I bothered to check.

Dropping the elitism: the OP is new to the thief, so let’s assume for a second that he’ll probably get hit a few times when he tries this out.

Lupi’s kick in P1 will down a zerk thief but not a zerk warrior. Yes, it has a pretty easy tell, but when learning the encounter the extra HP a warrior provides will make the fight easier.

And forgetting lupi for a second, Zacchary is still right. A warrior can do nearly everything a thief does, but do it without stealth and survive just the same. I’m just putting into perspective for the OP.

Having said all that, I’ll never make a warrior for arah or any other reason. Thief ftw.

Yes, yes he did. Guess the perma stealth thief never encountered another perma stealth thief. Oh wait a min, that actual make sense.

Perma stealth is dead Dec. 10. I also have a guardian with a few hundred hours so I’m not “the thief”, lol.

For starters, I was referring to PvE as well. Any change has to be considered there as well, though it’s slightly less important.

So your argument is based on one of two possible cases. Either this trait is critical to the guardian’s playstyle in PvP or it isn’t.

If this single five point trait is that vital to survival, as you say, then I’d have to objectively look back and ask “why is such a vital, class defining trait at this tier?” If that’s the case, the class designers have somehow failed. So there’s an issue. Perhaps it warrants moving up? Perhaps other skills need to be buffed, but either way there’s an issue.

On the other hand, if VP isn’t that important (and I doubt anyone would agree with that), it’s probably fine and warrants no attention.

The fact that this thread has been created and this issue comes up time and time again leads me to believe the situation in the former, not the latter.

For someone that has apparently played so much guardian you seem to be lacking some key points. The reason VP is so vital is because we lack pretty much any defense in our offensive lines, and our “superior base defense” everyone seems to claim we have is crap. Aegis can we wiped off with the smallest of hits (or in thief’s case, doesnt do anything because you stay in stealth and just to to re-backstab), VoR is extremely poor regen compared to other professions possible regen, and heavy armor doesn’t mean much when people can still hit 5-6k + on 3k armor.

Again, a five point trait that’s considered absolutely vital means there is a problem. VP is probably the best five pointer in the game. You need to objectively look at why that is the case, and then either address it directly or address the reasons why it is the case. (in a perfect world you’d also look at the worst 5 pointer in the game and work your way up and down, balancing as you go)

You bring up a good point. VoR is waaay too weak. It should be double, or triple, it’s current strength. I personally think the base HP gap is too wide between the heavies. Like you mentioned, the few aegis’s (aegii?) we have don’t make up the difference. Though to bring that up without a lot of qq from the warrior camp, though.

I think the issue is worth discussing. It’s certainly better than just having them nerf VP and get nothing in return, which is where we are headed.

Edit: A few other less rude posters have hit this on the head, I think. A guardian shouldn’t have to rely on dodges to mitigate as much damage as they do currently. Not only is dodging a generic, clkitten mechanic but it doesn’t really fit the mantra. Maybe we need moooaaar Aegis!

Yishis, you are awesome. Another great video.

A few people were complaining about the valk armor in this build as a turn off.

Here’s a build with nearly the same effective power and hitpoints as Yishi’s. Exact same traits, same valk ascended dagger for purposes of comparison. Note it’s without all the infusions and performs nearly the same:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYEQNAoYVlUmiP3eS6E+5Ex2jd2Tiy9woJtpdFiKA-jEDB4fAYLKa4LgkFDRjKAM5RZN7JgpPQlhFRjVXDT5SIV7KyCBMaLA-w

I did this in 2 minutes. I’m sure the min maxers could do a bit better, but the key point is that if you are building for crit damage you should always take it on food since you can get a 7 points/1cd tradeoff. I used the cheap food but the best one is always Sweet and Spicy Butternut squash soup for +100power+10cd. A good compromise food would be the Bowl of Curry Butternut Squash Soup for +100prec+10cd

Also, since this has no infusions it’s probably like a million times cheaper.

Open world…who cares, any class is fine. When you are zerging easy content it doesn’t matter.

I’ve recently bought a full set of zerk arah armor for my thief, and have been spending a lot of time there. It’s certainly the easiest class to skip all the content with, and you really make pug runs a lot safer/easier when you can stealth people. It’s a much harder melee lupi fight (assuming 25/30/x/x/x and not running soldier’s everywhere, etc.) because you have to be flawless, where guardians and warriors have tricks to take multiple kicks, etc.

Compared to a warrior, you have to be a better player making less mistakes to do the same DPS, whilst having ~half of their HP. This means that mistakes by your teammates will punish you harder, so get used to dealing with that. Still, a rewarding class!

Try playing a thief. No aegis, no reflects, no stability (ds doesn’t count), only a few ways to get vigor and they are all being nerfed.

When you look at a guardian vs. a thief, of the two I’d expect the thief to be able to maintain near perma vigor. Dodging is literally all they have. I’d say vigorous precision needs a rework to slightly tone it down.

The only reason your valk/knight has more EHP than the soldier zerk is because you:
1- wanted to troll and used different major traits wishing noone would have noticed (5% of prec goes to vitallity is only on the knight+valk build you made) or
2- you just builded it wrong without noticing it

In your build, zerk+sold has only less than 50 EP BUT more than 400 EHP comparing it to the valk+knight build

Power Necro

purgatoryz.6038

Spoj’s build has more DPS than the 30/0/0/0/30 + 10 build that nemesis & others have used. How much is up for debate, but it’s better. It also requires you to be in melee 100% of the time. As spoj pointed out, you don’t lose much from dodging in a good group. The caveat there is good.

Pugs mean longer fights, and the longer the fight goes on the worse it gets for the melee necro who’s spamming dagger auto. I could go into more depth here, but suffice to say that in a pug your DPS “uptime” is much more important than spreadsheet numbers, and the DS build has far higher DPS uptime in a pug simply because you can stay at 600 range and (if necessary) kite around the crippled mob with no loss in DPS.

The issue over which necro power build to use isn’t important though, it never has been. The real issue is even in the best case a power necro isn’t as good as almost any other class for PvE at the highest level. Unfortunately without a complete rework of skills, utilities, and the inherent PvE mechanics I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

TL;DR: Play what you want. Min/maxing groups won’t take a necro anyways.

for a starting-out semi-offensive build, try hammer/x 15/15/0/30/10. with the hammer protection it’s pretty forgiving to run full berserker gear, and you also have a big health cushion from the 200 extra vitality you get compared to a full dps build (most have 10-0 in honor). you still do decent damage, and provide all the support that a guardian is normally expected to provide.

For gear, even if you don’t go full zerk you should be 100% zerker/cavalier ascended trinkets because of the critical damage %.

For weapons, hammer can be speced to provide 100% protection uptime, which is more damage reduction that you’ll see with any gear choice. And…hammers are awesome!

I’m a firm believer that everyone should start off PvE in full zerk + ruby orbs and see where you are at. If, after learning the encounters and mechanics, you still find yourself dying, THEN add in pieces of tanky gear until you find the bare minimum of survivability you need whilst maximizing your DPS.

It’s not just the gear, though, it’s the build. Spec more DPS @ first and get used to life without AH. It’s a whole new world out there.

in good groups, good guardians deal MORE damage than warriors. and when you add reflections ,alot more damage.

You cherry picked my post, conveniently leaving off my part about reflects.

You also added the “in good groups” part, which is highly ambiguous and subjective.

I’m a sword guardian and wouldn’t trade it for a warrior any day of the week, but with the vastly different amount of situations you can encounter I think it’s hard to make a blanket “guardian > warrior dps” type of statement.

If anything, I’d say is close enough to not really matter, and that the OP should focus his decision on which class to make based on the other merits that each brings.

Guardian or Warrior?

For PvE you can go either way. Warriors are brain dead easy to play, and even a pugging “bad” player can do a respectable amount of DPS. This has led to a lot of CoF heroes who think they know everything because they can sit there and spam 100b. So if you go that route I encourage you to actually learn about your class and dungeon mechanics.

On the other hand, guards are more desired in PvE and can be traited to do nearly the same DPS as a warrior (more if you count reflects) while bringing as much or more utility to the table. But…it’s probably harder to do so. Me? I like the challenge of keeping my group alive will well timed aegis or keeping 100% protection uptime. And the best part about the guardian is that you can spec almost fully DPS and still have a ton of utility.

Looking at the CPU usage in task manager isn’t conclusive proof a game isn’t CPU bound, as it shows the average of your cores. It’s been beaten to death that this game doesn’t efficiently use multiple core procs, and you should easily be able to note that in your task manager.

The biggest thing to remember about my upgrade is that I went from 6 cores to 4 cores, but my single core threaded performance skyrocketed. That’s the issue here.

Sitting in LA one of my cores is hovering around 80%. Minimizing the window (I run windowed mode) drops that usage to 10%. All signs point to CPU utilization problems. There’s no other way to explain the performance gains I’ve had.

Throwing out my two cents as I recently upgraded.

I went from a 3.5Ghz 1055T AMD to an Intel 4.4ghz 4770k and my FPS more than doubled. Before I had to tone down some shadow/environment settings, now I’m max on everything.

Running a relatively tame GTX660 @ 2550 × 1440. I turned on Vsync because of some weird hesitation issue every few seconds, and running around the busy parts in LA gives me 30+ fps every time. All the bottom boxes are checked.

My conclusion is the same as the rest, the game is horribly CPU bound. If you are going to upgrade for GW2 performance, go for CPU first. Even at my (relatively high) resolution it helped MUCH more than a video card.

Scholar. The difference should be even more noticeable with the jump in weapon damage on ascended/legs.

Are runes of traveler worth it?

It seems like the traveler runes would be best in Nemesis’s hybrid spec as an alternate to divinity runes.

You lose 30 to all stats + 6% crit damage for 15% boon duration, 10% condi duration, and 25% movement speed. That seems like an excellent tradeoff for PvE/WvW.

Have you seen the engi and warrior roaming videos? These runes are heavily abused because there’s no internal cooldown on the 5 stacks.

Expect a massive nerf in a future patch. Anything less would be extremely surprising.

“I don’t want to use that skill.”
“…why not?”

Out of principle for me. I personally don’t think that telling someone how they should play and what to do is respectful to a player … as a player who also seeks to be respected. If you want to run optimized dungeon runs, form a group and assign roles, and ONLY play with them. That’s the only situation I would say you could ‘critique’ someone’s build openly.

In a PUG, you get what you get and even then, unless you simply suspect someone doesn’t know about WoR, it’s simply not your place to debate and critique their build with them unless they ask you to. It’s a lot like insulting a person for being fat, thinking it will motivate them to lose weight.

That’s a fail analogy, because a fat person, unless they are sitting next to me on an airline seat, aren’t really affecting me. Bad group members, on the other hand, have the ability to drag an entire group down.

If I’m playing incorrectly I’d expect some tips. When someone else is playing incorrectly I’ll give them some tips. Not an in insulting way, but friendly advice. How you choose to react is your choice.

PUGs want to succeed, and I’d say that generally everyone wants to be “good” at the game. That involves playing your class correctly, and changing your habits when you don’t. That means using reflects when the time is right. Friendly suggestions aren’t disrespectful, it’s when the conversation devolves into someone dictating exact play. I think we’d all agree that benefits no one.

I finally tried the 10/0/20/20/20 guide from reddit. Got through it between tries 15-20, including the first 5 where I was just getting instagibbed because it was like an hour after the patch dropped. Used P/D the entire fight, no swaps. I forgot the stew food buffs but did pop signet of agility one time.

They key is dropping SR right after you throw the third crystal. Then you can load up Thieves guild, trops, dodge a few times, and a sneak attack all in the opening burst. Then just pray you have enough dodges to avoid the circles
