I think the problem with mesmers right now is that they don’t have many other options other than condi chrono with portal+moa. As a mesmer main who got to legendary this season, it was rare to see a power chronomancer, and they were so easy to shrug off it was basically like playing 5v4.
I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, but when you make an unequivocal claim that is clearly wrong, I’m going to point it out.
Anyway, I’m not going to go about digging into previous tournament compositions to prove this to you. I believe you were the one who made the claim anyway so that means it’s up to you to prove it.
Warriors, Guards and Thieves have NEVER been meta. Ever. Never ever. Less than 0 times. It’s about time Anet realizes that some classes have been on top for far too long. Speaks volumes.
Uhhhhh…
Bunker Guardians
Hambow warriors
D/P thieves. All these were meta at one point.
I forgot that bunker guards actually were, but they did DO anything but hold points. Now you’ve got these classes that can defend a point and wreck your face. Bunker guards were harmless. Same with Hambows, maybe the BUILD was meta, but it was never on par with what was floating around at the time and what we have currently. And lol @ the d/p thief meta comment.
So you’re just changing the goalposts? Clearly these builds were meta, and you’re backpeddling.
“Oh but they didn’t DO anything” LOL

Just because you can’t deal with a ranger with S&R doesn’t mean there aren’t any ways around it.
Yes there are certain times that S&R is overpowered and you’ve found one. Where there are multiple levels on the Z axis and only a few paths available to get there.
I just don’t really see it as a big enough problem to remove it from PvP.
Just CC the druid when someone goes down. It’s not that difficult.
gl with that on khylo, not to mention you need to CC pet as well… and pray that druid isn’t immune to CC at that very moment
the only class that can semi-reliably do it is thief that stole necro fear and we all know how well are thieves doing and how useful/popular they are in pvp atm
Druid can easily CC another druid, especially in Astral Form
Mesmer can easily CC druid and pet with diversion or shield 5.
Necro can easily CC druid and pet with fear or boon corruption
Engineer can easily CC with hammer 5
Thief can CC with headshot (pistol 4)
Revenant can CC with staff 5
Want me to keep going?
Oh look this guy never played on khylo.
Right. I’ve never played on Khylo. Blinks, shadow steps, ports and portals do not exist.

16,6 matches per day with every match+queue+ready time being about 15 minutes is only about 4 hours of gaming, i dont think we’re living in such age when 4 hours of gaming per day is something to frown upon unless you are living in some sort of village
Most folks with families, responsibilities or jobs would probably disagree with you.
pvp in mmorpg is typically the sport of bachelors, pal
So I’m not allowed to play or give advice because I have a successful job and a family?
What a fallacious argument. Just because Arena Net is spending $200,000 on a tournament doesn’t mean that they can’t spend their money elsewhere on GW2.
I have a feeling that people should have to say their posts out loud before they’re allowed to post them.

poor mesmers were so overnerfed that they are still stomping legend games while class-stacking and literally doing the same rotation for every situation over and over while being able to easily outrotate every class in game and have the only complete shutdown skill in game
its chronobunker all over again except that now they also can kill you much faster
I don’t understand why you had to hide your own skill-bar.
The only conclusion that comes to mind is that you yourself were playing condi-cheese.
im playing my own build which none of metabattle heroes know so i prefer to protect my intellectual property
lol “intellectual property”
Your team has the better comp. You should have easily won this match.
any team with a warrior is a worse team
This is incorrect. I would take a warrior over a 4th necro 10/10 times.
I rather not lose 10/10 times.
Do you honestly believe having a warrior on your team no matter what the circumstances is an instant loss?
Lol more kids insecure about their sexuality/masculinity that have it programmed into their head by society that pink and/or butterflies are “feminine” and that associating yourself with either of these somehow makes you less “manly”
Classic, pretty much this exact thread pops up every few months
Yeah, it never gets old for me either.
sword is hardly used for anything other than spamming blurred frenzy invul frames so if you want something with more risk and reward then go for scepter
This is wrong. Sword does boon removal on auto-attack. iLeap is very important for juking and immob.
It’s all risk, little reward going to scepter.
I think there was another thread in here recently asking the same thing.
The sword has far too much utility to not be used. The scepter although it does put on conditions, it doesn’t do it well enough to throw away the utility of the sword.
Sword Pros:
- 2 second invuln with blurred frenzy
- iLeap can be both used to immob, and to juke. You can juke by iLeaping at the top of a cliff, and when your opponent jumps down to chase, you iLeap back.
- You are considered a clone when you shatter, so being up close will allow you to apply more conditions per shatter than if you’re just kiting.
Scepter may have its use in certain circumstances but the sword is the overall better 1h

Here are some situations where you can use portal:
You Have the Point:
-Drop portal and hit another point. When you see that point becomes contested, open your portal and hop back to wreck the person.
You Don’t have the Point:
-If someone’s on the point (and it’s unwinnable) drop a portal and head somewhere else. The person will either have to stay there to protect the point and do nothing for 30 seconds, or cap it when they leave.
-Also note that just decapping a point, and dropping a portal to come back to it to full cap it later is also valid in some situations.
Instead of the 5 guys lining to tell the OP how bad he is for thinking PS matters … how about you take a closer look at the numbers? If he makes scores of 150-200+ he has been doing a lot more than just standing mid and farming kills, or being a rallybot for the enemy team.
Why would I look at meaningless numbers with no context?
If the OP showed a video of their gameplay, we could make a more informed decision. Showing that they got over 150 points in a lot of matches means nothing.
To those of you of you that replied in support of my OP – thank you.
To those that feel my skill level as a Mesmer has something to do w/ it, please note the following:
- I’ve exclusively have been playing the Mesmer class for over 2 years now
- I have over 1,800+ hours logged on my Mesmer (main character); most of which are sPvP related.
- I’ve researched, practiced, and have applied lessons successfully shared by other popular Mesmer guide writers, such as: Osicat, and other sticky posts shared at:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmerAdditionally, In an effort to show you stats, I have some screen shots to share with you @: http://www.syric.net/images (I’m Sylvena Variel). What you’ll find in these images are several examples of my victory after victory as I moved through Amber and Emerald, and my progress into Sapphire. You’ll see I’m often 1st or 2nd place, and even in lower point ranking I still show my contribution to the team via heals, dmg output, and/or dmg absorption.
There is no reason why I should be, currently as of 3/21/16, at 65 losses and 6 wins in Sapphire ranking over the last 3 days played – that’s running PUG solo, and with running in 2-4 man organized team groups here and there….
If you believe that individual score proves that you’re a decent player, then I think you still have a lot to learn about PvP.
I’ve never been a fan of Skyhammer. I don’t like the gimmick of the hammer, and I don’t like falling off the edge/glass breaking and falling to my death.
The idea of a platform under the glass to just cost you time instead of instadeath would certainly help and maybe a significant decrease in hammer damage may go a long way.
Helseth was never good enough to carry solo queue when real solo queue came out. He never was good enough to get ranked high enough on a consistent basis. So I wouldn’t listen or care what he thinks.
I would suggest that you watch his streams, especially when he was doing unranked between seasons. I understand some people not liking Helseth, but to say that he’s not a good PvP player is laughably wrong.
Wow. Seems like a lot of people here don’t want to hear criticisms of their play.
To explain, I think I’m a slightly above average PvP player. I understand rotations, and class mechanics. I’ve played all classes and understand their strengths and weaknesses. I winstreaked up to Sapphire Tier 4 in a day with a few winstreaks then I bottomed out there, hitting a bunch of losses. I’m still there right now.
After watching this video, I think I’m going to adjust the way I play PvP. I realize now that it’s important to play both the opposite team, and your team. Carrying isn’t just winning your 1v1s and teamfights. It’s thinking ahead of the game, making quick decisions and being aware of what is happening on the map.
If you keep going into match after match trying the same thing and failing, maybe it’s time for a new strategy. I’m going to try that out tonight, and see what sort of difference it makes.
Good luck to everyone out there who isn’t advancing the way you would like. I know it’s just easier to get angry and blame your teammates or the game mechanics, but I’m going to look inside myself and see what I can do to change my luck.
Safe stomping has been part of the game since launch. Most classes have ways to stomp without being interrupted. Even the thief can use shadowstep to get away from most CC when stomping.
I don’t see this as an issue.
I’m having a great time with PvP. I’ve not been able to play as much as I’d like to, and I’m having no problems progressing. In 5 games I was able to go up 2 tiers in Sapphire playing a class I’m just learning.
Looking forward to having some time this weekend to commit to PvP.
I watched the last match to get an idea and I’d say that a number of the things I saw were similar to what the others were saying.
1) Get out of the red circles. You tank way too much damage
2) Learn to use combo fields. You barely used Hammer 5, and when you did use it, you didn’t use it at opportune times. Hammer 5 + Hammer 3 = chain CC. Hammer 5 + Hammer 2 = damage + vulnerability
3) I don’t think I saw you use slick shoes even once. It’s an important part of the build,
especially when it comes to interrupting heals and such
4) You need to learn which fights are worth fighting and which are worth running away from. You’ll never win an outnumbered fight with your current skill level.
I think you have the right mindset however with asking for advice on the forum. Keeping working on it and make sure to learn all aspects of the build you’re using. You’ll improve!
I run an spvp guild full of many players talking to each other on TS3, nightly. This also includes camio appearances by players not in-guild who join from contact lists. The large majority of players are experiencing the listed issue. It isn’t just the people posting in this forum.
OK then, if the data is so conclusive, please show your work.
So the big question is: Why are so many people landing 80%+ win rates as solo que after 20+ games in, while so many others are landing 0-10% win rates 20+ games in on legendary lose streaks? There aren’t even any players reporting 50/50ish type situations! Statistically speaking, with how this system is supposed to work, it would be an impossible anomaly for this happen, unless there were some favoritism going on within the server. Is there some of: “liked player set for wins and disliked player set for punishment” listings within server configuartions? How else can you explain this?
I’d like a dev response on this please
Have you considered that this may not actually be the case? People are going to come on the forums to complain if they lose 15 games in a row, and some folks will gloat because they won 15 games in a row.
We would have to look at the data (which is unavailable to us) to find if these assumptions of yours have any merit.
Occam’s razor suggests that it is more likely that the match making system is actually working correctly, and we just get both ends of the bell curve posting on the forum.
hmm, idk maybe to inform the reader on why I think mesmer ratios are an issue… ya think?
Simply stating something without any validity doesn’t make much sense. The spark notes version at the end is for the 99% of readers who will skip to the last paragraph.
All I’m trying to say is that when you want to write a post with an opinion, it’s best to state your opinion then prove it using examples or statistics.
I had no idea what the point of the thread was until the very last sentence. I’m not trying to be rude, I’m just trying to help out so that you can more clearly state your opinion and get more people on your side.
shrug
“Long, long, long, long story short… when are damage ratios going to be looked at for mesmer?”
If I’m reading this correctly, this is basically the crux of your argument. Why put it on the last line?
The problem with that though would be the queue lengths for popular classes.
It’s not unusual to see a 2 teams with 4-5 thieves or necros between them right now. They’d have to wait for quite some time.
I don’t think the class stacking rule is a good one, but I don’t see how you can implement it in ranked without significantly affecting the queue times.
Am I the only one that enjoyed the bunker meta? Obviously, with the issue of the broken bunker mesmer aside, there were some benefits, such as:
- Players would have to group up to take a point. It was useless trying to 1v1 a bunker, but once you got a +1, you could usually take the point.
- Protecting a point would actually be fun. When you were getting 1v1’d or 2v1’d you’d have to make sure you played it well or you would get taken down quickly. Mistakes were quickly amplified as they had a cumulative affect on your HP, and how your team would do.
- Roaming was essential. You’d need people to help +1 on the points. Now as soon as someone gets a point, everyone runs away because it can be easily recapped.
Maybe I’m alone in this, but I really feel like the bunker meta forced people to be more mechanically sound players. Holding points and rotating was the name of the game, where now it’s about how fast you can 100-0 someone.
The only reason to play Mesmer right now in PVP is to abuse portal/moa. Any role a mesmer once had in PVP has been taken over by other classes right now.
I’ll be hanging up my mesmer (which is my main class, especially in PVP) until there is something to be excited about.
well i took i already deleted the game xD
Anyway good luck.
Good riddance.
If you deleted the game, you shouldn’t be on the forum looking for attention.
Byeee!
If I were to play 1v1 I would probably do these in order:
- Celestial druid
- Bunker mesmer with soldier’s amulet
- Rev with Shiro/Herald and cele amulet.
I’m not playing the meta build because ANET is about to gut the meta build and make it completely non playable. I’m so bloody sick of people crying that Mesmer is OP and faceroll.. They simply haven’t played Mesmer and anet listens to the qq.
Meanwhile my morning continues. That’s a 14% win ratio folks. Thanks for nothing ANET.
1st. It’s not ANet’s fault you’re losing
2nd. Maybe you should be playing a better build? I main a mesmer and usually play power shatter, as there are few other viable builds. You could also try using a class that is better tuned right now.
Unless you want to just ineffectively QQ on this forum for a few hours. That’s cool too, I guess.
Why are you complaining when you lose 4 games? That happens to most people.
I dunno. It looks more like an ugly morning for you, and not for Anet.
Yep. Everyone with their salty retorts are just proving OP’s point.
Have any of you thought that since OP hasn’t been playing GW2 so much, and has had experiences with other MMOs that it could possibly make him less biased and more objective about the state of PvP in this game?
No…you salty folks are right. I’m sure of it. Just whine more.
Hey folks. I just want to clear something up. I don’t think there’s anyone here who is saying the chronobunker was a great spec. The problem with the mesmer is that once you take out that one build, there aren’t any alternatives for mesmers to use.
Condi builds are very greedy and don’t offer much in the way of team support, or burst damage.
Shatter builds can burst and +1, but not very effectively, and that role will likely be taken over by the thief/shiro rev.
Bunkers are well…bunk.
I think what people are asking more than anything else is that if you’re going to make the chronobunker nonviable, you need to put buffs somewhere else to offset it. I don’t think that’s asking for too much.
Except how warrior isn’t unplayable it just isn’t face roll easy like mesmer. Maybe thats helseths problem.
I’m talking about shatter mesmer since they’re removing bunker. Have you tried to play it? It’s not face roll easy.
Helseth’s ‘persona’ aside, I’d say that he has at least a point about the state of the mesmer without knowing more of the dev’s plans on how they’re planning on changing the class.
Unless they’re going to make some positive changes to other mesmer traits (other than 5% scepter speed) there won’t be many builds that are viable.
I main a mesmer, and have for quite some time. My thief already does a better job decapping and +1ing than my shatter mesmer.
It seems like they want to take away some of the power that bunker mesmers have, which I can understand, but I certainly hope that other builds become more viable, as it’s the only strong PvP role for the mesmer.
Power shatter can’t keep up with other DPS based classes, and condition shatter offers little utility for teammates.
Shatter mesmers are still fine, D/P thieves can still do a bunch of damage, bunker guardians are still a thing without DH.
I see someone is forgetting IWAY Warrior/Rangers. There will always be a ‘meta’.
It goes back to Ramelot, which was a south east supply camp defense where Starfleet Dental built something insane like 40+ flame rams, 10+ ballistas and 5+ trebs.
It was all a bit of fun, but people were really behind it and rallied to Ramelot to the death. Ever since then we have players that just like building random flame rams in odd places. The flame ram is sort of like the Maguuma mascot now.
Edit: I’m trying to dig up some screenshots of Ramelot. It was beautiful.
Yep. As a Maguuma resident, if I’m hanging out defending a supply camp for a while, I’ll drop the ‘Flame Ram of Victory’ and fire off a Flame Blast after every successful defence of the camp.
Is it really that hard to stomp people? Just bring a utility that makes it easier to do so.
Quickness, stealth, invulnerability…
All those traits make stomping laughably easy. Or just keep DPSing.
I think patch notes would go a long way. Honestly, I don’t care when exactly the patch drops, I just want to read the changes.
