Good drops in Guild Wars 2? Rofl…I’ve never seen anything worthwhile drop in 12 months of playing this game.
The Mystic Forge is also an insult.
Dude, can you fix this stupid mob anytime soon and punch the guy who thought it was a good idea to put an unavoidable champion with OP abilities in a story quest right in the face? And please kick him a couple of times in the groin, while you’re at it. One kick for each time a player died to this ridiculously stupid designed minion seems appropriate.
Indeed. The thing is: His thread is older and yet no dev bothered dropping a comment. This lack of care makes me sad.
I’m not missing the trinity at all and I absolutely love the combat system but I hate the fact that youcan’t pick the weapon you prefer since each weapon has a different set of abilities.
I also don’t like that every class is supposed to be able to do everything yet Guardians are bad at ranged combat with their hideous princess wands and staves, Necros have no long range combat either except for the pathetic staff autoattack, Engineer rifle has a long range autoattack yet all other abilities are close or melee range…etc.
None of the professions appealed to me so far. I like this game a lot but the fact that there is not a single profession out there that I’m fully able to enjoy really gets on my nerves.
That and the fact that almost every armor looks ridiculous and has serious clipping issues on Charr.
I also had a problem with how my Charr theif looked. It was my very first character and i ended up rerolling human after pleading with customer support for some kind of race change ( i was that desperate ). I went back and played some original Guild Wars and was reminded that there are Charr that stand tall like a human with huge manes and then there are the ones we have now.
Why weren’t we given both body types? To me it seems like a lot of the armor would look so much better on this body type since they stand upright like a human.
I also don’t get why Charr have to be hunchbacks. It’s just like WoW where half of the Horde consists of humanoids with deformed spines and just like WoW still didn’t update the prehistoric models of the older races I doubt the devs here are going to do anything about it.
Charr animations aren’t that bad. Their animations aren’t as clunky as a Norn’s. Except sword and axe maybe. Especially Necromancer axe autoattack looks incredibly stupid.
I’m just annoyed the achievement rewards look great on every other race but Charr.
I’m playing since release and I still can’t stick with a profession. Every class is lacking something and almost every weapon set has like 2 decent abilities and the rest are situational fillers. Some weapons have somewhat half-decent abilities, but I don’t like the weapon type.
Necromancer is awesome, but he has nothing for long range, pets are still useless and the class has little to no mobility. Also no fear on demand other than in DS. Boring.
Engineer is cool but I don’t like the abundance of RNG, the worthless turrets, the abilities of the rifle, the fact that it’s hardly worth building a legendary for them. In addition, grenade kit gives me karpal tunnel syndrome. Mediium armor also is the by far most generic looking and plain boring. I also feel like lots of utility stuff are rather lackluster and the damage is lacking unless you go conditions.
Guardian is okay but the only decent long range option is a scepter. Like seriously? A knight with a princess wand? Also 0 damage and rather bad mobility.
Warrior is decent, but bland. Should have 3 weapon sets he can swap to. I hate swapping out weapons for a rifle every couple of minutes because I can’t melee a boss, from a keep and in zergs etc… Probably the best profession in this game, though.
Thief used to be fun until ANet nerfed them over and over again. Now I feel like I don’t do any damage while being ridiculously squishy. Stealth also doesn’t seem to work most of the time and not because of the debuff.
Elementalist is too close ranged and squishy for my taste. I like the Staff but it’s just bad weapon on on him.
Ranger…nice but boring and hardly any condition removal. Also squishy as heck.
Mesmer is a chore to level and I’m unable to get past the first couple of levels without dying of boredom. Also too much pink and purple.
I think the most annoying part is that weapon choice dictates how you are supposed to play the profession and you can’t pick abilities you want.
…get the devs’ attention?
There are various youtube videos with naked Charr protesting in Lion’s Arch because most armor in this game looks absolutely hideous on Charr (take the new helmet skins you get from achievements for instance). Most gear looks absolutely distorted on Charr (and Asura) because it was designed to look good on human models. Come on, just because that lingerie looks great on Jessica Alba doesn’t mean that the very same lingerie would also look great on a lion, too!
I’m wondering if those protests actually caught ANet’s attention since this game’s endgame is all about looks and this is definitely a reason why Charr are the least played race despite being a popular race.
Seriously, Charr have so many clipping issues and even their cultural armor helmets look absolutely hideous on them (barring the T3, but this one has serious clipping issues with the Charr’s chin and teeth).
Do you know if there are any plans on reworking armor for Charr? Come on, even Grumpy Charr would approve!
(edited by shedim.8504)
Charr needs some love..when was the last time that this section got a reply from a dev? I think 29 days ago about the shield bug. We need some fixes on our models asap, it’s been too long :/
I’m still having the shield bug.
What is so stupid about the current system,it is the fact that you can ,,set,, your wanted personality by clicking dialoge line with the appropiate symbol you desire. This is not how RPG work you have to think by yourself which dialoge line could fit to character personality you want to be and the current situation, without seeing the symbol representing it. Also most of the personality bar should be filled via personal story rather than random NPC. And also they maybe should result in differnt ending or approach to whole fight with Zahitan. For instance someone barbaric will defeat Zahitan by ,,Pyrrus Victory,, making all friends hating hero at the and while someone charismatic will move bigger crowd to fight, and at the end may become known socialite of Tyria.
You forgot Trahearne is the actual hero of this story, not the player character.
Problem is: He keeps resetting sometimes during the battle. This enemy is utterly stupid. If your goal is making people quit your game just keep designing stuff like that.
That creature was put there specifically to be avoided. It’s on a long patrol path around the temple, and easy to avoid. In a similar fashion, if you stop to fight a patrolling knight, you’re likely to have another one wander in during the fight, then another, etc. Not every story step is “Destroy every enemy on the map”.
Uh huh…and how exactly am I supposed to avoid the first champion in “Retribution” that needs to be killed in order to progress? You know, the one that switches into plague form every couple of seconds, runs around randomly and 1shots all the friendly NPCs around you while dumping billions of conditions on you and keeps resetting multiple times during the battle?
Bear in mind I’m a level 76 character and I still can’t beat that. This reminds me of the insanely buffed Acolythes in the very same mission who also caused a lot of rage. They couldn’t be avoided either.
Don’t brush OP off like that. He’s quite right. There are various unexpected (and unnecessary) difficulty spikes in story progress and unlike this one, most of them can’t be avoided.
I’d like that. Tyria already feels so alive in comparison to other MMOs and this addition would be the final masterpiece and the creation of a truly unique experience.
There’s always something with this dumb mission. I wonder why one of the devs is always messing around with the mobs in there, creating all kind of unbeatable cheese BS…
If it’s not the Champion Risen Plaguebearer, it’s the Acolythe, that spawns unlimited unkillable minions every couple of seconds because somebody felt like tweaking them.
Dude, just make them all regular trash or at the very maximum one veteran and stop ruining the mission every week, or so! Save the cheese and lame encounters for Fractals or some optional content, not personal story. Nobody enjoys lame fights or massive, sudden and unexpected difficulty spikes in story progress. Just make all champions and veterans regular trash mobs and leave the mission alone. It’s annoying as it is, already.
Such a shame that all the new gemstore-armor looks terrible on a Charr…
Agreed. The rifle has better range than the pistol, yet most of the skills require you to be in melee range. This doesn’t make sense at all and is the reason for many debates since launch. The rifle doesn’t feel like a rifle and the great range is in conflict with the abilities.
To make it even worse, just compare Engineer rifle skill #5 with Tristana’s Rocket Jump ability in League of Legends. The Engineer is suffering from clunky animations and non-smooth animations, which makes it rather difficult to hit a target and to utilize the leap finisher component of the ability since the clunky delay doesn’t make any sense at all.
I’m more sad that ANet still didn’t buff the flamethrower. It’s only use since release is the knockback on #3, which is a shame since the kit is absolutely one of the best looking and one of the main reasons people actually rolled an Engineer. There has never been a MMO where you could have a flamethrower! A shame that kit is so bad…
Don’t expect it to change anytime soon. They nerfed the Engineer quite hard despite being such an unpopular and bug-ridden profession and the changes they made to them are okay-ish, but still far far away from great. They didn’t change the rifle since launch and now, 1 year later, they won’t change it anyway. If you want a rifle for ranged damage you’ll have to roll a warrior.

Hey there ArenaNet,
so far the game is pretty good and your living world updates are awesome even though the temporary available rewards such as skins or achievements are a bad thing for returning players who would love to get them, but can’t anymore.
However, this game is now almost one year old and the Charr are still the least popular race despite their absolutely amazing storyline, humourous and likeable, charming characters (remember Tybalt?). I think one of the main reasons for the Charrs’ lack of popularity is how (terrible) almost any piece of armor looks on them. They still have billions of clipping issues with almost every piece of armor in the game and there is hardly any helmet that actually looks satisfying on a Charr. They look like somebody was lazy and slapped human armor on a Charr model and didn’t bother that it looks distorted and ridiculous at all. I can imagine you had other priorities at launch but the game’s now almost one year old and even the new armor you added to the gemstore does not look good on a Charr. Think Braham’s armor. The most significant part of it are the horns on the helmet. It looks just so good on an Asura but on a Charr it looks like somebody put a cleaning rag on their head that happens to have some tiny horns attached to it and that look even worse than the original Charr horns, that meanwhile somehow managed to turn invisible all of a sudden. And, as every Charr leg armor piece that conceals the legs, it has horrible clipping issues with the tail and partially with boots, which is very very unfortunate since players are spending most of the time watching their character from 3rd person view behind them. This is just so sad!
You also released Achievement reward skins, but the helmets look absolutely ridiculous on a Charr. You can barely see the molten helmet thing on the charracter you’re playing. This is very sad especially since the reward is quite hard to get and it only looks good on the other races.
There was some interview with the developers at launch where they stated the’re disappointed with the lack of popularity of the Charr and that most people roll humans. Well, the reason for this might be that humans look good in every armor set, whereas Charr even look bad in their very own cultural armor.
Can Charr players expect some love and polishing of the armor skins anytime soon, so that they finally start looking good on a Charr, too? Yes, I know that is not going to be easy but since your game and endgame is about looks, as you mentioned multiple times during interviews, Charr get the short end of the stick unless you re-adjust or re-design the armor pieces specifically for them so that they can finally get rid of clipping issues (leg, boot, hood/head armor) and they finally get some armor that doesn’t look like somebody forced them into a distorted human armor.
I know this is not your top priority, but still. A lot of players and of course an entire race would appreciate it. Even Grumpy Charr ;-)
Sincerely yours,
a sad Charr.

True. I expected a significant discount, as promised by Kiel but I can barely tell if it’s cheaper now, or not. Looks the same to me. Stupid.
(This is going to blow your mind…) I voted for Kiel because I want to see the Thaumanova fractal.
AKA Charrnobyl?
Nah, it’s rather something such as Suriel, who has a 1shot infinite range ability that is randomly cast and can’t even be seen due to having an animation that doesn’t stand out at all. I’d be fine with that if those guys actually had a casting bar or a very obvious animation. As a Charr, I’m more busy fighting the terribad camera in the narrow arena rather than actually focussing on the enemy.
Then the salad with her hurricanes, great. Get hit once, be cc’d forever. Not every professions have easy access to stability.
If people feel like they’re getting cheesed by anti-fun mechanics such as invulnerability, cc-locks and 1shot kills, well, you’re driving customers away rather than providing a challenge.
Wanna give us a challenge? Why not giving us a good old hard fight without anything that reeks of lame?
OHKOs and massive Health pools are THE two worst methods available for inflating the difficulty of a fight in any game. They’re a lazy approach, and a symbol of bad design.
Reason being, they’re severely detrimental to the enjoyment of the fight.
No one likes an instant loss out of nowhere, and no one likes tickling an enemy to death for literally minutes. Combining the two would immediately destroy the game for anyone. It’s a classic mistake.
Exactly. Being oneshot by an AoE ability that is almost impossible to predict or see is just plain stupid. Same with immunity. I thought in the wake of the WoW Paladin bubble people actually realized how frustrating and anti-fun such lazy mechanics are.
Yet they’re still in MMOs and MOBAs.
One-shot kills are nice in FPS with hardcore modus, but they have absolutely no place in a MMO.
Hey there, I’ve got the same issue :-) I have 5 lvl 80 and still can’t stick with a profession.
Ranger got buffed a bit and seems to be pretty strong and fun, too.
Looks like Thief got nerfed several times. Wonder if he’s still as killy as before.
How are Necro and Engineer now?
It’ll just be a staff skin.
I see why you say this, the model is holding it in roughly the same way as current staves. However, I will gnash my teeth and rend my garments if you are correct. That is clearly a halberd model. God if they give it to spellcasters I’ll be kittened
Would look great on a guardian, though.
How much are you actually going to save ? Even if it was a 100% reduction (doubt it will), what kind of traveling do you even do that will save you a few golds ? Do you like to WP back and forth from Rata Sum all the way to CoF ? Do you somehow manage to jump to every meta event multiple times a day ?
If I were to imagine that everyday I’d pay the same WP fee I did today, I would barely be near 2g…
Let’s assume you’re teleporting around for 1 gold/day. That’s still ~30 gold saved in a month, whereas the discount on keys is worthless to players who don’t want/need them. Quite honestly, it’s very stupid to implement a bonus that is free while the other requires you to invest real life money in order to benefit from it.
You don’t have to invest real life money since you can buy gems with gold.
Funny, I barely have any gold to spend and I am definitely not going to waste that little bit of gold on worthless keys.
Sure but other people have lots of gold. So if you’re poor, it doesn’t change the truth of my statement.
Yet Kiel’s bonus provides something for every player, regardless of their income, interests and how long they are playing ths game. Everybody is using the waypoint system but not everybody is willing to spend money on keys, especially with the rather underwhelming stuff you get from chests. Another tonic or crafting booster? Beach please!
Bonus for everybody>bonus for wealthy players.
I’d rather have the Abaddon fractal but the Charr’s bonus is just plain useless.
On the other hand if they switched the bonuses they were offering, Evon would have won FOR SURE. It’s still closer than you’d think…52 to 48.
I think that’s precisely what Anet was looking to do. Make people choose sides. Get people involved. If they made it so that both candidates had equal value other buffs but different fractals, they’d have failed in what they tried to do.
Just from listening to people, I’d say this was a successful gambit. And it could have gone either way.
Agreed. I like the fact they offer different bousses but ANet’s approach seems to be rather disappointing. They should rather have released a gameplay bonus such as Kiel’s, a trading post bonus, such as the Charr’s and a fractal. That would have made a lot more sense, at least to me.
If you offer a bonus that doesn’t involve you paying currency in order to benefit from it and one that does, well, you know the rest. I guess most people voted for Kiel because of the Waypoint discount. Can’t imagine they’d rather pick Charrnobyl over fighting a deity and the fact that the Charr is just a tad behind seems to hint at that.
If only both have had a general bonus, a gemshop bonus and a different fractal…

Is the holographic dragon wing cover you can buy from the trading post permanent or temporary? The one time use wording confuses me.
Sure, I’d rather have the Abadon fractal, but seriously, everybody is traveling multiple times every day and you’re going to save so much gold, so this bonus is far superior to any discounts on things you have to purchase with real life currency.
I don’t think Kiel is going to win because of drooling males voting for her. She’s ugly, to me she’s also unlikable but the bonus she is going to provide is so good, gets you to save a lot of gold and doesn’t cost you real money.
I’d rather vote for the Charr since he makes me laugh and I’d rather have the Abadon fractal than a boring reactor explosion, but unfortunately he got the rather weak bonus that is going to cost real life money in order to benefit from it ( and honestly, i don’t like Black Lion Chests anyway since they’re full of stuff I don’t really need while travelling is something everybody does so many times during a day), which is very very saddening.
This is not the first time anet put nice stuff in those black lion chests. If you don’t want to gamble don’t buy them. OP you just sound mad because you lost at the casino.
Can’t blame the man for being mad at a RNG-plagued MMO.
Do people seriously think that developers don’t play Engineer at all? ArenaNet is a multi-million dollar company and you SERIOUSLY don’t think their developers know a lot more about class balance than their players? It’s their job to do this, we all do it for fun. Of course they have people who play each class, it would be insane to think they don’t. A lot of these changes are made in mind with ALL other changes made to other classes, everyone likes to look at their one class and scream “STOP NERFING US!” but never take it into the big picture.
It’s not like these changes are permanent, they do a lot of things to “test the waters” and see if it works or not. These forums are a mess, crying every patch I swear.
Yes, I didn’t believe that until that patch, but now I am pretty sure about that. Remember that recent interview with the devs? They made the impression as if they have no clue at all about certain classes, just watch their faces or their reactions and the recent patch proved my instincts right. The Engineer has been bad before that patch and now he’s even worse.
What do you think? Does it look like if they have a clue to you?
Well, the previous dailies were way better for a simple reason: You could accomplish them in PvE, dungeons or WvW. Well, maybe except the aquatic BS.
Nevertheless, unlike the new ones they didn’t feel like a chore to me.
I absolutely hate the new dailies. They eat simply way too much time to accomplish and are way too grindy for my taste. They simply force me to do things I don’t enjoy and I don’t have much choice, when I want to get the ascended gear I need instead of the RNG gamble and pathetic drop rates for useful stuff in fractals.
The ascended gear is another problem, especially since the devs promised not to make this game a gear treadmill. But hey, it’s not the first company to break their promises as soon as the opportunity arises. Personally, I think this game is going downhill and it makes me quite sad.
Seriously, I cannot understand how somebody can design something as frustrating and anti-fun as this mission. Come on, infinite Risen respawn on a 10 second timer when you have to retake the courtyard, while the incredibly dumb Pact NPCs get oneshot by the even most basic risen. How on earth am I supposed to retake that pile of feces, when I automatically aggro every risen in the area as soon as I attempt to step on the circle, or to rezz one of the fallen Pact fools? How on earth am I supposed to even remotely enjoy that part of the story mission?
I absolutely don’t understand how somebody can design something as frustrating and anti-fun as this mission and leave it just like that.
I am an Engineer, 10 levels above the story’s requirements, got the best green gear for my level and this mission is still impossible to accomplish, because the risen have infinite respawn on a ridiculously low timer and are as tanky as veterans in the open world. Can somebody explain to me how to get this mission done?
How about nerfing the crap out of the stupid risen and not make the summonner clowns veterans in the first place, so that people can finally get this pile of feces mission done without losing their minds?
If you want to have a look on how to not do things, just take this mission for future reference.

Thanks for posting here, guys.
My biggest gripe with RNG is not that we have so ridiculously much RNG but that we are the only profession with abundant RNG on crucial abilities. Most of the popular professions, such as the Warrior, don’t have any RNG at all. In fact only 2 out of 8 professions have RNG.
I also think being the only profession with self-cc on cc abilities or stunbreakers is a huge design flaw, as others already mentioned before.
I understand some of you do not want the Engineer to become a popular profession but think of it this way: More people playing the profession = more people posting builds, creating guides, more things you can learn. Besides, I am getting tired of seeing Thieves, Mesmers and Elementalists all day long in WvW and I sure would like to see more Engineers, since it could be such a great profession, only if it wasn’t limited by questionable design choices and billions of bugs.
Haha, repairing siege weapons would be op. I like the suggestion, though.
(edited by shedim.8504)
BL chests should have a chance to drop exotics and even precursors. Boom. People would buy them.
Do exotics actually drop in this game? I’m playing since release and the only exotics I got werre from completing the Orr maps.
Probably because of the ‘On-Crit’ effects that are present in the game. If condition damage could crit, it would trigger the on-crit effects alot, which would be unfair to classes who don’t have much access to conditions. Besides, I would be able to keep up (for example) 25 stacks of Might with just a couple of stacks of bleeding.
That doesn’t make sense. They could easily make condition damag crit, but not make it trigger on-crit effects, if that was their concern.
Conditions ignore armor, protection, and even pure invulnerability. Having 50%+ crit with conditions critting once every two ticks would be outrageously overpowered.
This might be the reason. I dislike the condition cap, however.
Dunno, the only ranged professions that give me any trouble whatsoever are Necromancers and Mesmers. And Thieves, but that’s a whole different story.
This pretty much sums up my gripes with the Engineer, and how it can be improved. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Shortcomings-of-the-Engineer/first#post1306328
I remember your thread and I really like your suggestions. Especially the revealing invisibilty for the goggles is definitely one of the best suggestions by far on the entire forums. Wish the flamethrower had something similar for his #2. A flare or something that prevents stealth classes from going invis.
Thanks for linking your thread!
Turrets:
Let’s face it: Turrets are terrible. The only somewhat decent turret is the net turret, but most people don’t slot it anyways and get it from the supply crate drop, instead. The proble with turrets is their pathetic damage, their ridiculously high cooldowns, their fragility and the fact they are stationary. In order to make turrets viable or even people cosindering slotting a turret, they need to scale with the Engineer’s stats, so they deal better damage and gain some survivability and they need to refresh their cooldown as soon as the Engineer picks them up, again. Stationary objects with very limited range, low hp, low damage and low rate of fire on rather high cooldowns in a mobile game is kinda meh. No wonder nobody uses them. They should also not randomly aggro mobs in PvE. We also don’t have a Turret-ultimate. How about a steampunk-mech-suit, that works just like a mobile turret, granting you the abilities of every turret as long as they aren’t on cooldown in the utility slot, or a mobile walker/golem that grants defensive buffs and carries up to 3 turrets for you effectively enabling turrets to move/follow you as long as the golem is alive?
Elite skills:
The only viable elite skill is supply crate and this is sad. Like I said, I’d love to see a decent elixir, a decent elite-kit (preferrably a high range kit such as sniper or gatling gun kit), a decent elite gadget and a mortar that actually has a decent range and damage.
Yeah, there is no tl;dr. If you really like this class and want some changes, you should be able to spare a couple of minutes and read through the wall of text. Show some respect for your fellow Engineers. There ain’t many of us left anyway, after all! Thank you for reading!
Happy posting, guys. Can’t wait to see your comments and suggestions!
Kits:
Kits are a great idea, however I wish there was more variety in them since so many are just so similar. The fact we have a (terrible) elixir ultimate but no kit-ultimate makes me sad. There have been great suggestions, such as the sniper kit or I’d love to see a gatling-gun kit or some sort of steampunk-mech suit-kit as one of the ultimates. Wouldn’t that be cool?
I feel like most kits are decent enough, ableit a tad too low in their damage output.
However, the flamethrower kit is the most cool looking, but also the most disappinting kit. The autoattack damage is just…bad for the risk it involves. Flame blast is still way too clunky and buggy. The devs could just change it to be just like blunderbuss, but dealing huge burst damage and applying burning instead of bleed or be a blast finisher. Smoke Vent should either create a persisting smoke combo field or apply ticks of blind for a short duration around the Engineer. I feel like the flamethrower doesn’t apply enough “burning” for a flame weapon and the damage is incredibly underwhelming for putting your medium armored butt into the dangers of close range combat.
The Grenade kit desperately needs an autoattack that has auto targeting just like under water. It’s incredibly annoying mashing the 1 key over and over again because there is no autoattack. For the love of god, make grenade kit 1 on land work just like it does underwater. The other abilities can stay as they are.
Bomb kit is fine, a tad boring, but fine.
Exlixir gun needs the damage increased.
Tool kit is fine as it is.
Gadgets:
I rarely use them since they have rather high cooldowns, are extremely situational and odd benefits, such as a ridiculous self-crowd control sideffects on Rocket Boots. Funny thing is their Tool Belt abilities are sometimes better than their utility abilities. Gadgets are incredibly lackluster and unfortunately I have no idea how they could be improved other than lowering their cooldowns by a lot. We also don’t have a gadget-ultimate, which is kinda sad. How about some custom force field, or teleporter? Or some device with an unique ability and a passive that enhances all your equipped gadgets and their tool belt abilities (by granting them extra effects for instance)?
Elixirs:
Elixirs are a great idea and are a vital part of the current popular builds. However, the RNG aspect of most elixirs makes them anti-fun and unviable in competitive play. A dev stated that the RNG is great, since it requires the player to adapt and provides spontaneous benefits, that great players can utilize. So, dear devs, if RNG are so awesome how comes no other profession except the Mesmer (only 1or 2 abilities) has acces to the awesome RNG abilities, then? Imagine Guardians wanting to cast wall of reflection and they get swiftness and aegis, instead. Or thieves wanting to cast shadow refuge and a fire combo field pops out, instead. Wouldn’t that be fun? RNG needs to be removed. Add different effects to the elixir depending on whether you cast it from your utility slot or your tool belt. Voila. Variety without RNG. Sorry, but Elixir X is pathetic for an ultimate. It just doesn’t fit in any build and the random nature of the elixir makes it incredibly difficult to utilize. It needs to be changed into something worthwhile, such as mimicking the last elixir you used, or grant some boons while refreshing the cooldowns on all of your other elixirs and their tool belt abilities.
Hey guys,
don’t worry, I’m sick and tired of all those whinethreads, too and thi isn’t going to be just another one. However, people are kinda right to complain since the Engineer still seems to be a rather lackluster profession. The purpose of this thread is to elaborate what it takes to make our favorite profession more popular and desired in PvE as well as PvP. Let’s gather suggestions and ideas. I’d love to hear from more experienced players where the Engineer is lacking in their opinion, but every opinion is valuable, so keep it coming!
Rules:
-don’t whine
-be polite
-no complaining without suggestions/solutions
Aight, here we go:
When I first saw the Engineer it sounded just like the profession I always wanted to play in an mmo. I absolutely loved the Engineer in TF2 and the Ork Mekboys in Warhammer 40K, so the Engineer had to be a blast. Unfortunately the Engineer turned out to be extremely lackluster.
General issues:
The Engineer still has billions of bugs and is in dire need of QOL changes.
Autoattacks sometimes still show “obstructed” even though there is a clear line of sight. This is frequent when attacking stationary objects, such as siege weapons. I noticed this is a frequent bug with pistols, rifles (Warriors have it, too) and kits. The flamethrower kit is a paramount example of this annoying bug.
A lot of traits are simply bugged and need their tooltip updated.
Every profession has at least 1 100% projectile finisher on their ranged weapons. Engineer only has 1 on each weapon, but only 20% chance. Jump Shot has a leap finisher, but the animation is incredibly clunky and the ability is unnecessarily difficult to use fluidly. We have combo fields and a few finishers in our kits, but not everybody wants to utilize kits in his build. The standard weapons should have at least one guaranteed finisher.
Weapon issues:
Weapon damage is balanced with the idea behind the Engineer having access to kits, so the damage is artificially toned down. This has been confirmed by the devs and the reson behind it is our versatility and access to kits. However, the Elementalist is at least as versatile as the Engineer, if not even more, but he doesn’t sacrifice anything for his versatility at all. I think this is extremely unfair, since it is an incredible disadvantage for Engineers, who do not want to utilize kits in their build. They pay the “damage tax” for nothing. Therefore, the artificial damage reduction needs to be removed or Elixir/Turret/Gadget builds need to be buffed.
No 100% finishers (except Jump Shot), as explained.
Pistol: The autoattack is lacking because of the “damage tax”..
Rifle: Autoattack is lacking, too. Jump Shot needs QOL changes. The animation is ridiculously clunky and desperately needs to become more fluidly. See Tristana’s Rocketjump in League of Legends for how it should be done. Or the flamethrower in a specific quest in GW2, that has the same ability, but only without delayed animations. This is a huge improvement and it needs to be done.
here is my problem with the problem you all have with the kits,
the engineer is designed around the kits. the whole class revoles around the kits. the kits, in essense are a form of stance dancing. you dance between the kits that fit your groove, and supplement with your weapons and your devices.
If that’s true then our kits should be F1-F4 and we should have our utility slots free.
I’m not seeing that.
the fact that we CAN slot all elixirs or non-kit utils means we are NOT based around kits, and if the devs are treating us as such it’s unfair discrimination. (we get to be the only class which has to sacrifice utility slots for our “core mechanic”?)
our weapons should hold their own in terms of damage unless and until kits become our F1-F4 and we have utility slots free.
They didn’t do this because they felt like the Engineer would be too similar to the Elementalist, then. I still don’t get how they felt like it was a good idea to restrict Engineer weapon and kit damage, because of the possibility to equip kits. Why did they design elixirs and turrets separately, then? They could as well have designed an elixir-kit, gadget-kit and a turret kit in order to force us to use kits. Instead, they gave us the possibilty to not equip any kit at all, but still nerfed the damage massively. It doesn’t make sense to me.
Problem is, those professions you listed are strong versus multiple opponents, too and unlike the engineer they don’t need a certain specc for that.
The engineer’s biggest issue is, that the devs decided to gimp him because he is a jack of all trades in a game where every profession can specc to be somewhat a jack of all trades, anyway.
I feel like the range is just fine, however, the autoattack is still way too prone to missing. The damage is also very underwhelming considering how devastating a flamethrower actually is in real life and how much effort it takes a rather squishy profession like the Engineer to stay within the range and ensure the entire channeling hits. It is a high risk but low reward kit on a medium armor profession. I feel like this is utterly wrong design.
I honestly expected the flamethrower kit to grant you more access to strong burning conditions, fire and smoke combo fields and massive short range burst AoE damage.
While the autoattack and #4 are meh, #3 is great, #2 and #5 are just pathetic. #2 could be great, but it is simply way too buggy, the projectile is way too slow and gets obstructed 99% of the time, which is a shame. It should explode and deal its spike damage as soon as it hits something.
The autoattack should definitely get buffed and apply burning on every hit, increasing the duration of the condition. This is a flamethrower, after all!

I really have no idea how to utilize double pistols. It looks great and I’d rather have them than the shortbow, but the damage and the abilities seem to be lackluster. I feel like there is absolutely no synnergy between the pistol mainhand and the offhand abilities and the only useful ability worth spending your initiative on is #3. While the pistol offhand abilities aren’t bad, they simply do not fit and are just way too expensive anyway, since you need initiative for your #3. The offhand pistol abilities are great with melee weapons, but downright terrible with a mainhand pistol in my opinion.
Thoughts?
I also noticed that when you trait for Steal stealthing you, it doesn’t stealth you at all when combined with gaining buffs on Steal/damage or poison on steal. Every time I tried to use it infight to cloak it just didn’t cloak at all and was just standing in front of the enemy autoattacking like a fool. Is that intended? If it is, you desperately need to update your tooltips.
I also think that the Thief’s survivability in WvW is just way too high due to stealth being such an incredibly overpowered mechanic. I know I’ll get a lot of flak for that but since stealth has absolutely 0 counters in this game this mechanic is just absurdly op. And yes, I do play a Thief, myself.

My biggest issues with this profession are:
-Your damage is downscaled because you have kits, regardless of whether you use them or not -> unnecessary disadvantage, since the kits aren’t really that awesome anyway. Buff Engineer weapon damage! Elementalist is way more versatile and has no disadvantage at all on his DPS.
-Severe lack of combo finishers on Engineer weapons in comparison to other professions while not having great combo finishers in kits, either.
-Engineers need 2 separate rifle traits to get what Warriors get with one trait. Why?
-Grenades without an autoattack really gets on my nerves. My fingers start to hurt and pressing 1 over and over again just isn’t fun at all. They should work on land just like they do underwater. The ground target system in this game is lame, anyway.
-Rifle #5 is in dire need of some quality of life changes. The animation looks clumsy, the landing takes way too much and the ability takes way too much time to finish. It should work exactly like Tristana’s rocketjump in League of Legends. The animation desperately needs to be more fluid.
-No viable ranged dps specc with weapons and no decent ranged dps kit. No, Grenades don’t count. (Sniper kit! Make it happen!)
-Flamethrower kit sucks, since the damage isn’t so great and it misses half of the time anyway due to bugs. Flamethrower #2 is basically worthless since it still bugs 90% of the time anyway. #5 should create a smoke combo field. The flamethrower just doesn’t feel like a flamethrower at all. The burning effect is way too weak.
-Turrets are still worthless. They have a way too low rate of fire, deal 0 damage, are destroyed almost instantly by any AoE and have way too long cooldowns. The turret toolbelt skills are unavailable when you deployed a turret kitten Picking them up should reset their cooldown completely.
-RNG on too many elixirs -> no tactical use on yourself and allies on some of the elixirs. Sadface.
-Pistol damage is underwhelming, even if you go for conditions. Elixir gun is kinda underwhelming, too.
-Pathetic ultimates. Mortar is a joke. Damage and range suck big time and the elixir is….just bad. Wonder if anybody used it, ever.
The majority of the traits should be reworked/overhauled.

I’m Designer Hrouda, and this is my favorite thread on the forum.

That being said, we are always looking at our reward tables. I agree with you that a blue is very unsatisfying of a reward for GL and other instances. Part of our Dungeon work coming down the line is going to involve changing reward tables and whatnot, so please be patient as we work through things as fast as we can.
What’s your favorite store on the Citadel?
I think unique armor sets for each profession would be a great addition tothe game. Also legendary armor. One thing I liked about WoW were the T-sets and it’s a little bit unfortunate that there aren’t any specific sets for each profession innthe game, yet.
Yeah, we can still customize a lot and have quite a decent variety of armor to choose from, but still. What’s wrong with more variety?
