Seeing as how this class has issues, and this thread is so full of unhelpful banter about broken bows and under-powered underpants. I thought we should have a thread where we just gave out tips on how we are overcoming our shortcomings, something for the new Rangers in town, it’s not all that bad.
This is not for posting builds. This is where we share the things that we think everyone should know about. Anything really. You may think everyone knows, but new Rangers might not! My only request would be that you name your tip with a * bold *
I’ll start it off shall I? lol
Downed Pet Management
When you’re downed, you can still tell your pet to do things, if it is dead as well, you can switch pets while downed. For example, say you have a Wolf, it can have it fear everyone away while you try to bandage yourself or have a friend revive you. Using your pet wisely when downed can save your life.
Zephyr’s Speed
Now this is just a 5 point trait in the Beast Mastery tree, even if you are not using a BM Build, this is a must-have trait. 2 seconds of quickness might not sound like much, but when you use it wisely it can give you a hell of an advantage. Not to mention your pet will use its first ability much faster.
Drakes
You should definitely know this by now, Drakes have had their aoe ability polished and boy can it shine. This is a 2blast finisher that the Drake will attempt to use right off the bat, meaning you have an on-demand blast finisher that does some serious damage.
Ascended Quiver
If you can’t get a fractals group, but boy do you want that vial for your Quiver. Just set it to level one and jump on in. You can solo those initial elite harpies, you can solo those greedy grawl. The vial drops off of any mob loot dropping mob in the dungeon it’s all down to luck.
That’s actually all I can think of off the top of my head, what tips do you have for new Rangers?
Perhaps people don’t remember what that means.
GS doesn’t have any damage, in Beta it was much the same except for the Auto-Attack. In Beta the GS 1 had exceptional scaling and base damage, this allowed it to crit for 5k or more making it an excellent melee dps weapon. The melee power-crit ranger was exceptional and allowed the class to stand up against other melee classes both pve dps wise and pvp wise.
The problem was that people were getting 3 shotted in sPvP, and there were a number of reasons for this. First off Crit Damage had not yet been nerfed in sPvP, second QZ like all other quickness abilities did not have a debuff associated with it, and finally the might stacks from Rampage as one had a duration that allowed you to gain an ungodly amount of might just by using the ability and letting your pet attack.
Needless to say a nerf came, however RaO was nerfed, along with sPvP crit damage. RaO has stability which used to NOT be a boon making it so you couldn’t boonstrip/corrupt/steal obviously this was nerfed along with the duration of the might stacks. For the GS they hit both the base damage of the ability AND the base damage changing the GS into the pool noodle that it is today. Had they only nerfed RaO and crit damage the GS would have been toned down enough in sPvP to no longer be a problem. However they completely gutted the weapon so that it can no longer be used in a power build.
I think that the base damage and scaling should be returned to the weapon giving rangers the option of being melee damage dealers once again.
Bring back the Melee Power Ranger!

On the whole, I am largely impressed with the armor skins in GW2. There are plenty of interesting looks across soldier/adventurer/scholar professions that keep me seeking those new skins. However, I miss the GW1 concept of a unique “flavor” for every profession. Now that the skins are largely homogenous, there are no real distinguishing aesthetics between prof’s of the same armor class, though I suppose their are certain skins that seem more predisposed towards a certain profession. I miss the sleek, ninja-esque look of assassins, or the roguish, Victorian theme of mesmers.
Does anyone else feel the same? And do you think in the future we may see gear that is cosmetically unique to a certain profession?
- New Trait Tier 3 (Skirmishing): Trap’s do initial damage upon activating. (Such as the Ranger’s in AC Exp)
- New Trait Tier 3 (Marksmanship): Decreases the cast time of all Longbow skills by 15%
-Adjustments to the current Traits-
Trapper’s Expertise (Skirmishing)
- Trap skill’s use ground targeting (1000 Ranged) and are 50% larger (Currently, their range is 600, which feels too short)
Beastmaster’s Bond (Marksmanship)
- Gain fury and 10 might when your pet’s health reaches 50% (30 Second CD) (Currently, you only get 1 might, which is pathetic)
Beastmaster’s Signet (Marksmanship)
- Activating a Signet grants 8 might (Currently, you only get 1 might, which again is pathetic)
Companion’s Might (Skirmishing)
- Critical hits grant might to your pets (Increase the duration of the might applied to the pet to 10 seconds, as opposed to the 2 or so seconds it is now).
Master’s Bond (Beastmastery)
- Your pet has a bond with you that increases its attributes each time you kill a foe. When it is defeated, the bond is reset (Change it so you can swap your pet and still keep the bonus. Otherwise, this trait is completely contradicting it’s minor trait “Zephyr’s Speed”)
Martial Mastery (Wilderness Survival)
- Sword, greatsword, and spear skills recharge 20% faster and increases damage by 5%
Vigorous Spirits (Nature Magic)
- Spirits share the Ranger’s Vitality (as opposed to giving them twice as much health) and are immune to Area of Effects
Spiritual Knowledge (Nature Magic)
- Spirit bonuses have a 30% better chance of providing their benefits (as opposed to the 15% it is currently) and increases their buff range.
Agility Training (Skirmishing)
- “Return to Me” now makes the pet Shadowstep back to the Ranger. (as opposed to the 30% faster speed increase) 15 second Cooldown
Healer’s Clerity (Wilderness Survival)
- Grants regeneration to you and your ally when you revive someone (currently, it applies Swiftness).
Hide in Plain Sight (Wilderness Survival)
- Apply stealth (as opposed to camouflage) when you are dazed, knocked down, launched, pushed back, or stunned. This effect cannot trigger more than once every 30 seconds.
Enlargement (Nature Magic)
- Pets get enlarged when you reach 50% health (as opposed to the 25% it is now)
Instinctual Bond (Beastmastery)
- When you reach 25% health, your pet gains quickness for 5 seconds (currently, this only works when you are downed) 50 second cooldown.
Shared Anguish (Wilderness Survival)
- Incoming disabling conditions (stun, daze, knockback, knockdown, sink, float, fear, launch) are reflected back to the enemy instead 90 second cooldown (currently, it is transferred to your pet and why would we want that?)
Maybe it was 3/4 the whole time. That’s some serious dishabituational schema shift thinking I saw 1 second on longbow before I played around with sb+gs for awhile. I am thinking the shortbow might be a lie. It gives the illusion of killing faster than it actually does so when you go back to longbow it seems it shoots quicker. Thus greatsword swoop and shortbow must expand the perception of the passage of time. So when I switched back to longbow and the passage of time became relatively normal it seemed my bow was shooting faster because the passage of time seemed slower because any period taken from it is smaller(equal divisions independant of time) where I the ‘temporal constant’ observer within this period percieved no change of time until it was pointed out by another observer from empirical unts. Thus the longbow in the dishabituated state seemed to shoot faster because the period which the shots occupy is smaller but I get the same number of shots per period because I am a ‘temporal constant’ observer.
Screw making ranger on par and essentially the same as every other class. I wanna be able to dart around slinging venoms, constantly regenerating wounds while being engulfed in a fiery inferno. The fields and abilities are already there, we just need a few things changed up.
Ideas:
Concussive/Point Blank Shot feel like Blast Finishers. Plus, being able to AOE armor our entire team might actually make us desired.
Possibly drop Rapid Fire down to x5ish hits and make it a 100% Projectile Finisher.
Make Viper’s Nest a Poison Field.
Make Muddy Terrain an Earth Field.
Make Serpent’s Strike a Whirl Finisher.
Make Finishers from pets benefit the Ranger.
Give Spirits a Field.
Make Pounce (third auto attack on 1h Sword) a Leap Finisher. Crazy idea, but just thought I’d throw it out there. :P
Any sort of comment is welcome, positive or negative.

Hall of Heroes? Probably the best reason to play PvP ever.. HA, TA, RA, GvG.
crafting shouldnt exist, the black lion trading would be much better off.
I just miss gw1 period… gw2 went backwards somehow…
the first wintersday was when I got my copy of gw1, it felt warm and cosy with strands of Christmas lights strung from pole to pole, and there were places for people to hang out to create hubs for different level characters.
Ascalon City : Levels 1-8
Lions Arch : Levels 8-12
Beacon’s Perch : Anyone running or lfr to Drok’s
Droknar’s Forge : Levels 0-20
Ring of Fire : Levels 20-20
ToA (for FoW or UW) : Levels 20-20
There were always places to hang out and help each other in THE ONE LOCAL CHAT WE HAD. THERE WERENT 10 DIFFERENT CHATS PER MAP. WE DIDNT GET MESSAGES SAYING “You have exceeded the limit of messages” for 20 minutes solid until a party search function was implemented.
ToA was a place for the endgame players to hang out and trade the highest valued item Ectos.
There werent many exploits that i came across as an average mmo player, but some things felt like exploits and made me money in a way that was better than grinding. Ex, running incapable players to Droks for 1p each. or other shiverpeaks runs to citadel and so on where you could charge 8p each.
I helped other players that were a lower level, it wasnt right, because what they were doing was get level 20 armor at level 3, but it was the best type of game i ever played. truly a thing of the past.

As it stands there is no way to tell visually at a glance if the pet is either alive with some health or just been downed and has just regenerated some health but not rezzed yet.
This can be very irritating when you glance at the pet health before using a skill that relies on pets like “stick em” you think the pet is alive when in reality he has already died and only has some health but not rezzed yet.
The way i propose to instantly fix this is to just change the colour of the pet health in the pets skill bar, to say grey or another fitting colour to represent it being dead, changing back to red when the pet revives.
This would help pet management so much..
and seeing that pets do a large portion of our damage i would like to see visually if its dead or not..
please share your thoughts on this
Anet, give the ranger something like these, pretty please <:-)

For the longbow!
ps. now that I have your attention, please make all ranger longbow skills useable while moving.
Cheers!
I fully endorse this Sniper Shot idea.
ANet – if you give this the green light, I will send you clippings of my hair.

Hey everyone, with the help from quite alot of GW2 players, I was able to finish up my gallery of all the weapon skins, (both in gemstore and in the vendors that sells them for socks/hats/sweaters), outfits, and minis I managed to find for Wintersday.
I hope this should help those deciding if they wish to purchase those skins/outfits/minis. All of the weapon pictures are high res ingame screenshots as the preview window doesn’t show the particle effects (all the gemstore ones have a frosty effect).
Enjoy and let me know if you find anything missing! Huge thanks for everyone that helped me to complete the gallery!

I think it depends on your playstile:
If you want to learn game mechanics fast and don’t mind the difficulty then go with Elementalist, you will have to use combos, boons and conditions to be effective.
If you want an easy toon then go warrior or ranger, they are almost mind numbing easy to play.
If you want something in the middle ground play a guardian, they are easy to learn and can combo quite well.
Whatever your choice be sure to read these wiki pages: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Boon
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Condition
Those three pages will teach you more about GW2 than anything else, but a lot of gameplay experience.

I couldn’t have stated it any better.
This game really is different than others, so it would depend on what you like whether it’s melee or spell-casting or a combo of both.
I’d recommend starting out with two toons, that way you can trade off and get a feel for melee/spell-casting, plus not get burned out just playing on one all the time.
I guess we have to complain about something, right?
Given so many people complain about it being difficult to earn gold without grinding like mad, I thought I would post some of the ways I earned a Triforge pendant and a Breath of Jormag without burning myself out or using methods that ANet are going to nerf.
1: Omnomberry bars. Seriously. Buy them. You should always have a stack on hand, and pop one when you’re doing any form of activity that will result in a high kill count.
2: Twilight Arbor. Getting a group for this that can actually fight might be a pain, but grab a few friends, and you’ll all get rich pretty quick. Save the Onyx Cores you get from it, and synth them into Onyx Lodestone. You have a pretty decent chance of getting a core or two every run, and lodestone’s aren’t that rare if you use an Omnom. Seriously, I cannot stress Twilight Arbor enough. A single good run can get you 3g, and you’re relying on the chests, not the clears. I’ve made 5g on a run where I lucked out, and said profit is entirely due to what players have done to the market.
3: Ascalon Catacombs full kill runs. Most of the champion mobs in AC drop 5s+. With an Omnomberry bar, this goes up to 7s+, meaning that it pays for itself. There’s no lodestones here, so alot of the profit is in the ending clear.
4: Exchanging dungeon tokens for tier 2 sigils/runes. Mostly a luck method, but you should be able to rapidly get a collection of t2 runes/sigils, which you mix together in the forge. 25% chance to make over a gold, for only 200 dungeon tokens. Given you make over 200 dungeon tokens for just running all three paths and killing everything, and can luck out and score like 5 gold, you’ve got no real risk to this method.
5: Southsun kill squads. Just make laps around the island in magic find gear. You’ve got an entire island dedicated to just Bloods/Scales, and on a decent drop rate. Bring a few friends to kill quickly, and you can make some decent income. Even just one friend really speeds this up though.
6: Claw of Jormag farming. Again, bring friends. Focus on the adds on all phases of the fight, pitching in when the dragon is stunned. You get a very constant flow of loot, and even the tiny ice elementals that self destruct are worth money and have a chance at Corrupted Lodestones.
Basically, grab friends, and work together. People are always complaining GW2 doesn’t encourage social play, but you actually make a TON more gold by playing with friends and doing group content.
Hey everyone, recently I have compiled a couple of weapon galleries using high res ingame screenshots that includes most of the weapon skins available ingame except the starter weapons. I thought I would share what I have here incase you are looking for a specific weapon skin for your character.

Many people don’t know this, but before launch their were “activities” planned. They’re part of the reason why ArenaNet made their capital cities so incredibly awesome and rich in detail; they wanted players to treat the cities as a social hub to hang out with friends and foster social communities therein. While they appeared to have put those plans on hold, we can see a lot of the activities in game already. They’re just not active.
I encourage anyone who’s interested to do some serious exploration of the cities themselves and speculate what kind of activities might be there and what we can expect.
To elaborate; there are supposed to be 4 or 5 activities in each one of the racial capital cities. I’m pretty sure they’re all supposed to be completely unique unto themselves and are only available inside that capital city. So things like the Lion’s Arch diving board and the Metrica Province golem chess are NOT considered to be activities.
Here is a list of all the activities I could find by myself searching through the capital cities.
DIVINITY’S REACH
UPDATED: Jousting Event: In the northern section of the “Eastern Commons”, east of [Minister’s Waypoint] is a half built structure. Apparently some sort of jousting will take place, as alluded to by a antsy carnival worker.
The Busted Flagon: It’s the point of interest between “Western Commons” and “Plaza of Dwayna” on the map. If this is the bar brawl mentioned in interviews, supposedly this will be a perpetual activity where players can jump in and out as they please to fight in an epic bar brawl. However, when you talk to “Ingolf Roadson”, the norn inside, he mentions “Toss The Axe” which could be the actual activity instead. Description: “Y’know, everyone gets in a circle and tosses an axe to the right. Or is it left? Anyway, you get hit, you take a drink. All I remember from my last game was that the little sylvari who won. She had quite an arm.” He explains only reason they’re not doing it is because his brother “Uwe” isn’t there yet. “He should of been here ages ago.” Note: the Carnival Worker who sends you to this place refers to it as a bar brawl. On the support beam there are 4 signs (which look to be standard bar signs instead of specific to this one building) that read in New Krytan:
IF YOU ARE STILL STANDING YOU NEED MORE DWARVEN ALE
DONT DRINK AND QUEST
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY
EVERYONE STOP SHOUTING
UPDATE: Bar Brawl achievements have been added to the activity list. Bar Brawl, however, remains inactive.
Haidryn’s Menagerie: It’s the Point of Interest by Plaza of Melandru, by the vista. For now, it’s just a bunch of animals in cages. Like a “Golden Moa” and the “Cavern Scutter”. Description: “Welcome to Haidryn’s Menagerie. Haidryn is out on an expedition right now, but I’d be happy to show you around.” I don’t know what might happen if and when this is active, but there’s a beautiful area right next to it which the Animals might be allowed to roam under supervision and has a beautiful fountain with a statue and an interactable tree that reads: “Two names have been carved into the tree together: Mikal and Evkina.”
Uzolan’s Mechanical Orchestra: I think it’s supposed to work like a jukebox maybe, or some sort of collaborative instrument where you can make songs with other players for the rest of the area to hear. I can’t find any worthy description, just keep getting reminded that this is all paid for and organized by Minister Caudecus.
Carnival “Thump-Em Ups”: <—The title of the game is what is written on the sign in New Krytan. The Carnival Worker standing there only has a little bit to say. “Welcome. I guess you’re wondering what’s going on with the big tent here? Well, when Thump-Em-Ups is ready to open, people will really have something to talk about.” I don’t really know what a thump em up is, but I assume it’s just some sort of brawling arena for people that wanna wrestle and stuffs? lol, idk.
Mina’s Target Shootout: Description: “Three participants enter, each one with one of our custom bows. Hit the moving targets to earn points. Whoever has the most points at the end of each round wins.” To get here, travel down Dwayna’s Road from the main entrance and turn left at the District Promenade. It’s easily reachable by using the “Commons Waypoint”.

Well it’s no secret that the last few days has seen the GW2 community divided on many issues. Topic words include ‘Manifesto’, ‘Philosophy’, ‘Grind’, ‘Gear Treadmill’, ‘Vertical/Horizontal Progression’ and so and so forth.
Well the AMA on Reddit has finished and for those that have read it, it is again likely to divide opinion.
For me, however, it comes down to this:
Are you going to give Anet a second chance?
Again, it’s no secret that for many of us, gaming is very important to our lives. Whilst I cannot say I fall into this category these days, I certainly used to, and because of this I understand that for those of you playing for 8+ hours a day, Anet’s recent ‘betrayal of the manifesto’, has been taken very personally.
For those of you under that category, you are understandably asking questions such as ‘Why should I trust anything Anet says again? The answers on the AMA say ’we are working on this’, ‘we are aware of that’ but they have completely ignored everything they have said in the past, they could do it again.’
Are the answers in the AMA enough for you? Can you bring yourself to believe what they say again?
I can.
My own personal stance is that I have not heavily invested in the hate train. I cannot say that I have enjoyed the game as much as pre-patch. I think the population is heavily fractured, between those stuck at low level fractals, and those too scared to jump off the fractal treadmill for fear of being left behind. I immediately disliked how difficult it is to get Ascended items but am also pleased to find out that they are going to add more ways in which to obtain them. I disliked the patch but didn’t get caught up in the uproar. I personally think a lot of your reactions over the past few days have been embarassing and undignified. A lot of your responses, though, have been thoughtful, philosophical, well-organised.
Personally, I acknowledged that Chris both too responsibility for this fallout, and apologised for it.
I am also ready to give them a second chance, and so is my wife and so here we will stay.
So yeah, I am not saying those of you leaving are wrong or right, just showing my own personal stance on the matter.
I am going to stay and give them a second chance.
I’d like to hear your own stances and plans now.
Thanks.

Something which doesn’t get mentioned often enough.
Anet has done something which no other MMO appears to do properly: takes exploiters and botters seriously and ban them. The big trains are completely gone. This is a major achievement.
Even in WoW there are constantly bots in BGs making your team lose, bots farming gold, exploiters everywhere, even at the top of the arena ladders. Blizzard has failed to ban them and continues to allow bots to impact on other players.
So here’s from me:
A kudos to ArenaNet for doing something that is very important for legitimate players, thanks for banning all those bots that plague the MMO and general online gaming world.
You will only be able to congratulate them on getting rid of bots when 3rd party sites no longer exist because they no longer have gold to sell. So, it’s a bit premature to congratulate them as the sites are still bustling and there will be no positive impact on the economy though anything they have done to date.
What the hell ? I hope you are’nt serious.Do you realize its not anets job to take down those sites, nor is it in their power ?.Those sites are legal to exist.Anet certainly deserves to be praised how they handled the bot situation, they sure are still here, but not in the massive amounts i used to see them and they were quick with handling it.
For freshmen 80/400 Guardians (like me) who’re having a hard time deciding what type of very first exotic armor & jewelry is the best “bang for a buck” i have created Comparsion Spreadsheet.
It doesn’t give a straight answer but at least make it a bit clearer.
Just a fun pic. Hopefully some of you will enjoy it! I know I’ve seen Thorr’s running around a lot as well.
I don’t think rangers are weak, but they are very repetitive and lacking in options. This has been said over and over and over, so even a few good builds will not change the problems many people here are faced with :(
I totally understand the sentiment of taking a break from the game until they fix your favorite class, and if I didn’t find something to like about mesmer now, I would have done the same. It’s not a taunt to Anet or anything, it’s basically us saying that we don’t enjoy the lack of options on our favorite characters :)
I’m sure it will be fixed – unfortunately that’ll require some time clearly. While I may never return to ranger, I almost wish they were overpowered for a little while, to sort of make it up to you people xD ..
.. still staying out of the water in wvw now though.
The patch notes for necromancers are an insult to anyone playing one.
The notes for guardians makes me want to continue on my alt..
Recruiting necros & guardians. Whisper ingame.
When is the next update?
OK I have to respond to one part of this. How in the name of…. do you have only TWO designers working on class fixes for the entire game?
So yeah it’s only 5 days till that patch goes live, where are the patch notes, please don’t tell me that you are just gonna roll a patch out again without anybody knowing what has changed regarding the classes.
I heard they’re gonna nerf your favorite class and buff the class you hate the most.
