1500 Rescues - changes needed

The new LS-Events would be a lot more fun if more Players would actually try to rescue 1500 citizens.

Problem is that just following the zerg feels far more efficient reward-wise than anything else, even if its counter-productive. Even worse, It feels like there is a penalty for coordinated small-groups in that you’re getting less loot and achievements.

This also creates unnecessary Conflict between Players who archieve the objective of rescuing citizens and Players who want rewards.

There should also be more instant gratification for working towards Completing those Events. I guess, I would reduce regular Loot and hand out a LootBag for every 20 Citizens saved…

I personally loved the chaos of this update. They did a great job of capturing the atmosphere of a city losing in a siege. I really felt like I was in there. This is war people and there are no rules in war.

Since the forum is already swarmed by complaints and could-have-been-better posts (to which I admit I contributed myself), I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a thread focused around the positive aspects of this latest update to show the devs we appreciate the hard work they put into it.

So thank you Anet devs for:

  • an easier way to obtain obsidian shards than grinding karma. A big help to those of us working on legendaries.
  • a new way to increase Magic Find without the expense of salvaging every single drop. I take the salvage route instead of selling (might explain why I’m rather poor in this game) but I know many enjoy the drawings as a new form of Essences of Luck.
  • progressive crafting. While I may not be a fan of the look of this backpiece, I hope the crafting system carries on for future models, which everyone can work on at their own pace and gradually improve upon.
  • scavenger hunt type achievement. I know it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I personally enjoyed tracking down all these little piles of rubble.
  • quaggan tonics. Everyone loves them though some would not admit to it at first. Nice to have more variety (and brawl) over the old quaggan tonics from that event in Straits of Devastation.

Anything in particular that you enjoyed about this update? Share yours!

"Hero of Lion's Arch" Title

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Taisia.2813

This is a suggestion. Why not add a title like that which can only be attained by saving say 250 citizens? This will allow:
1. People to actually search and rescue the citizens,
2. Make it clear that the event’s main goal of 1500 rescued is reachable this way,
3. It will be a reason for “achievement hunters” to partake in the event
4. We will know who really helped to save the citizens of LA when they display their titles..

It would be very easy to implement and help those who actually want to do the event rather than zombie farm bags while following champ farmer train commanders…

Thoughts?

The big reward of this event is given when 1500 civilians are rescued.

However, unlike a tequatl or marionette battle, or even a scarlet invasion event, most people are not aware of this fact or encouraged to work towards it.

Why is this? Because zerging is not the required strategy, as many are now working out. We need many individual players to go out and save civilians, while keeping corridors of safety open for them to make it to the exit npcs or areas. Unfortunately, this just will not happen.

To make it happen we need – some sort of individual reward and encouragement to get players away from the zergs and those tempting, but ultimately pointless blue loot bags. The event design needs a slight change so that players are given a strong incentive to go off and grab those civilians and to ensure that they make it back in one piece. If this does not happen, then we, as a community, will just miss the point of the event and I find that a rather alarming prospect. This should be about more than AOE and loot bags….but currently, the achievements and set up of the thing do not reflect this, so urgent change is required.

Since there’s so much negative opinion on the forums about the LA attack, I wanted to post a positive topic as a counterpoint.

Why? Because I feel that the forum population is a highly biased population which doesn’t really reflect the appreciation the event gets ingame.

I understand players are apprehensive about something like this. WoW tried something much smaller, the zombie invasion, and it was cried at until Blizzard promised never to do something like it again.

However, this is quite a different situation!
When Scarlet first tried to be mean™ to us, we commented that it’s a pointless effort because she lacks a quality an antagonist needs, they need to do something to make us antagonize them.
Even as far back as Frost&Flame, there were threads where the idea of an antagonist (not necessarily Scarlet) invading & destroying Lion’s Arch was brought up. Repeatedly. These threads weren’t rare, the idea was always met with apprehension but curiosity, after all we have plenty other main cities.

What I am trying to say is, I appreciate you – the devs – listening to player input. And this isn’t an uncommon opinion, ingame.

For all we can criticize all day long, and we players really love to do that, we see improvements in the events of every living story which directly reflect feedback we gave about previous encounters (this one shows a lot of lessons learned from the Invasion, actually).
At the same time, most of us do realize this was something us players brought up again and again as an idea of what Scarlet can do.

And – and this is where I have to assume a bit – “most” of us realize that if the destruction of LA were to not rob us of some convenience, however miniscule, then the ploy would be for nothing and in the end we’d just have a reskinned LA, now called Vigil’s Keep.
The need to visit different areas is part of why we end up thinking of Scarlet as someone worth removing (as a threat). She took Lion’s Arch from us. Not from our characters, but from the players. An idea we suggested.

Sure, I myself have plenty things I can criticize about the specific implementation. But all these are rather minuscule compared to the overall impression of having developers directly listen to their player input.

Thanks.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Personally, no, I’m not disappointed at all! I love it! And it’s really huge, I think. Basically a whole new zone with lots of new events. And even more than that, this update combined with the past updates have really gotten me invested in the story.

Dunno what to tell ya.

GW2 is about open world content, not instanced, and that was a decision they made very quickly upon release. You’re not going to get what you want.

And the airship lacks a bunch of services you can find on the ground. Stop being drama lama’s and click on a WP in another city to make use of their facilities.

Dear Anet,

The new update is fantastic! The events are fun, the vanity sets and other new gem store items are cool, and the storyline (The idea of LA being attacked) is great. Me and all my friends have had a great time playing and we look forward to what the future holds. Keep up the good work! (Just thought y’all might like to hear something positive for a change on these forums.)

Sincerely,

I really like this addition to the living story. I like the idea that we aren’t fighting for Lion’s Arch, we are just trying to cut losses. It gives a sense that Scarlet is much stronger than we thought she would be. She literally wrecked all of us.

As for the actual event, I like how the main event is rescuing citizens around the city, and there are various subevents i COULD attend if I wanted to. It rewards the MMO style of playing. You could travel in small groups, you could zerg, you can run solo and find citizens. You aren’t forced to do anything.

I know one group I played with started to split in to many smaller groups and spread throughout the city to look for citizens, then regrouped when an event occurred. ANet did this very well. Props to them. And the ruined LA looks amazing.

There is nothing fun about a zerg.

Then stop running in one. The event requires groups to be active across the map. If champs are spawning because of a zerg, then something is being neglected elsewhere. ANet structured this one well.

why is that patch good? we got nothing more than zerg event awful loot ONE, i repeat, ONE cinematic and the destruction of a main city which is probably the only fun thing.
