He’s talking about the sale. Also yes, the only thing I want to buy currently if it goes on sale are bank slots. Hopefully they do.

The Vocal Minority

This is a very important point because using that argument is actually nothing more than an ad hom attack.

Actually no, you’re mixing up your fallacies, technically it’s argumentum ad populum. Ad hom would be saying you’re stupid and thus your argument is wrong. An appeal to the majority is when you argue that 1 million people can’t be wrong, or that the minority must be wrong because they do not agree with the majority. Although I guess you could twist argumentum ad verecundiam in order to support the opinions of the minority while negating the opinions of the majority.

But point taken none-the-less.

I just wanted to write a quick post about this “vocal minority” argument I see popping up quite often here.

The fact is that this forum is probably only a small proportion of the total Guild Wars 2 community. I think we can all agree on that. I think we can also agree that this small group is very vocal about their opinions of the game.

What we can’t do, is make the mistake of assuming that just because someone is in the vocal minority, it automatically makes their argument valid, or invalid.

This is a very important point because using that argument is actually nothing more than an ad hom attack. It’s like saying that because only a small minority of people were speaking out against the nazis, that their points were invalid.

We have no way of knowing what the silent majority thinks without gathering proper data and feedback. All arguments on this forum can easily represent a large, or small percentage of the community as a whole, but we simply can’t know this without a bigger sample size.

So, if someone makes an argument or an observation about the game, by all means agree, or disagree with what they say. But make sure you don’t fall into the trap of automatically dismissing the argument, just because they are the vocal minority.

Thanks for reading.

I think it’s been covered. Parties in this game just don’t serve a function in open world PvE besides giving you a little blue dot on the map to track people and a private chat channel.

Random invites without at least a “Hi, want to group up for ________” will be auto-declined. I don’t know you, I don’t know what you’re doing, or why you want to group with me. Heck, I don’t even know if you speak English (nothing against foreigners, just hard to be social when you can’t communicate with words).

Otherwise, if you ever see me in the open world and want to follow me around, go hard. I randomly afk on mountainsides, mass pull, and runs through large groups of mobs to get where I’m going faster sometimes. But you’re welcome to tag along.

If you need help with something just ask and I’ll help if it isn’t going to cost me 2+ silver just to get there. I’m going back to what I was doing when we’re done whatever though and I probably won’t join a party just for it because it’s unnecessary fiddling with UI stuff.

3)Salvage Rares.

5)Progress or profit.

In 5 easy steps your problem can be solved. If your looking for exotic gear then do Dungeons. I’ve had good exotic drops in FotM.

From my perspective, the style of World of Warcraft is kind of like the minor leagues of gaming. There is a lot of competition and everyone is competing to be the best. The pinnacle is to get to the big leagues which is raiding. It’s content that not everyone will see or be a part of and only the best of the best get there and the best rewards goes to those who get there. I played wow for years and was burned out and treated poorly by other players because I didn’t have what it takes to get there. This style fits for some people, and I understand the appeal, it’s just not for me.

The style of Guild Wars is more like the movie Sandlot. You play hard but no one is keeping score and stats don’t matter much. Everyone gets their time at bat and you play not to reach some goal but just because it’s fun. Guild wars had this niche and a lot of people got this game because it wasn’t like wow and it felt like home to me.

But things are changing to try to cater to a bigger audience but it’s a huge mistake because it’s not possible to make both styles happy. GW2 is moving towards wow light and GW2 is going to be second rate because wow does this style better. There is going to be those that want the wow style of always progressing and reaching for the next best thing so that they can be the best and be a step above everyone else. Once they reach the top it will not be enough because sooner or later it will not be exclusive enough. Those that don’t play the rat race will be left behind sitting the bench. You already split the community and whatever you decide to do now…it will not end well.

The purpose of 100% completion including wvwvw is to get you to participate.

Participate!

Unfortunately it often has the opposite effect. People forced to enter the WvWvW maps generally just run around getting map completion as quickly as possible and actually don’t contribute at all. This just leads to annoyance for the folks that are there to contribute as those doing map completion are preventing others getting in that might help the cause.

Horizontal progression my azz that doesn’t work and the game was bleeding people fast with that standalone. A mmorpg just can’t do that alone in this day in age.

In which age did an MMO even try horizontal progression? We’ve had over a decade of vertical progression/gear grind MMOs. We don’t have a way of knowing of the game is “bleeding people”, and we certainly don’t know if lack of vertical progression is a primary cause of people leaving the game. I would agree that the game population is lower now than it was a month ago, but that is to be expected after any game’s “honey moon phase”.

GW2 was a well-hyped, highly anticipated game, and a sequel to another very popular game. Take a look at a few games in similar situations, particularly those requiring a service like Steam (for player stats) and having online/multiplayer as a primary feature. I think any recent Call of Duty game can fit this bill, with multiplayer being the main feature and even having post-release content/DLC to keep players longer. These games peak in concurrent players shortly after release. Everyone gets their new toy on release day, and they all play it. The ones that don’t like it as well will stop playing it, others will playthrough the story once and quit because that’s the part they wanted to see. There is massive list of reasons why someone would choose to stick with, or stop playing, any given game.

Sounded very much like a PR exercise to me when I read the article. Fractals was a really good idea and could have been amazing if not for the exclusion/elitist attitude it’s brought with it into the game and sadly no mention of addressing these aspects – just adding more.

The thing that surprised me most about the way ANet handled the running of the one-off event, was that for a company that pretty much set the standard for using instances with GW1, they didn’t use instances to manage the timezone/lag/culling issues that were bound to occur in an open world, fixed-time event.

ANet could have used all the scavenger hunt and new dynamic events prior to the ultimate boss fight to allow players to acquire tickets to an ultimate boss fight instance, that players could enter once, at a time convenient to them.

Using an instance would also control the number of players and thereby improve graphic performance.

Having this unique instance available as a one-off with a 2-3 day window to use your entrance ticket might have been a better way to deal with managing the event. While the concept of overflow servers is a good one, it clearly was not the right option in this case.

Just my 2c.

It’s only a game.

I would have preferred a more direct and honest summary. I know it’s partly about PR, and PR people always think euphemisms and allusions work best, but I’d be feeling a whole lot more positive about Anet as a development house right now if they had took it on the chin and said “it was a massive debacle, we are sorry and have learnt this, that and the other lesson.”

Regarding the future, I am disappointed to see an increasing focus on dungeons/fractals. Anet has been innovative in so many ways, I had raised hopes about them finding some other end game for PvE than a WoW-style repeat-these-dungeons-hundreds-of-times-for-a-reward model.

Imagine this conversation in real life:

‘Hey, I’ve explored every country and continent on Earth’ says Guy 1

‘Err, you haven’t explored the North or South Poles…’ says Guy 2

‘Yeah but I hate the snow and cold, so it shouldn’t count as a continent’ says Guy 1

What you are actually complaining about is that you have to do something you don’t like, in order to get something you want. You for some reason feel like you are entitled to the achievement, without actually doing the achievement, because you don’t want to do it.

Well let me break the bad news to you kid, just because you don’t like PvP, doesn’t mean the battleground are suddenly not part of Tyria, in the same way that The North Pole doesn’t suddenly vanish from the face of the Earth because it’s too cold for you to explore.

If you want 100% map completion, you’re going to have to, you know, explore 100% of the map.

I know my post sounds snarky but it’s really that simple. I find your thread and attitude pathetic, it’s just my honest opinion.

Take care

Uhm yea, with the diffirence that the poles are on the earth, and the WvW areas are not.
Thus making your point completely invalid.

Map Exploration 100% includes P vs P WHY ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GreyFeathers.8175

GreyFeathers.8175

Nah….. Romeo you’re post doesn’t sound snarky at all it sounds exactly like something I would expect from a P vs P player and is usually the biggest reason many players hate P vs P over P vs E. It’s not so much the difference in the two it’s the players were forced to endure and their attitudes. You can dress up P vs P all you want but the same jack wagons and idiots we avoid as P vs E players will always be the same types in those areas. I know it seems lost on you but it really is that simple. I find your response and attitude typical of those players but it only serves to prove my point, but that’s just my honest opinion.

The battle grounds is nothing any P vs E player is going to consider anything short of P vs P and has absolutely nothing to do with exploration. These are maps which are not even attached to the world. Can we access them through exploration in any area in the world ? Plains of Ashford, Orr, Kessex Hills ? The answer is no…. so again why is a section of the world separated in it’s own space ? Perhaps it’s something which needs to be separate. If they want to open it up and include it on exploration then let’s just allow people into it by walking into it. This should let everyone be happy. I can see it now, people screaming but nobody is helping build fortifications or attacking the enemy. They’re just wandering around exploring. That would really tick off the commanders and Hard Core P vs P players wouldn’t it ? Oh wait I forgot someone just explained to me that this was P vs E so again try and give me another failed explanation or example as to why it’s classified as such.

Even in GW I…….. Underworld / Fissure of Woe / Domain of Anguish were considered elite areas and had no impact on ones exploration or back then cartographer title. I can’t be the only one who thinks this is BULL and it isn’t because we don’t want to work at something, we want P vs E and P vs P to remain separate where it belongs. If these truly are P vs E areas then they should be accessible by simple exploration. Trying to combine the two things never works and eventually someone will get the point. Judging by some of the more helpful and posts kept on topic others are equally confused.

Honor is limited only by the limitations that we place upon ourselves.

Anet 2.0 & The Manifesto

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sylosi.6503

Sylosi.6503

The manifesto hasn’t been violated by Anet, it’s been violated by a player-base that twisted it into whatever they thought it should have meant, rather than what it actually meant.

No twisting invloved, some of us simply followed the Q&A sessions, interviews, blogs, etc and therefore don’t come from a position of ignorance, so we see the manifesto in the context of what they repeated time and time again.

For instance in their blog their lead dev wrote this:

“We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.”

With ascended gear they have broken that statement in two ways, firstly it is no longer optional if you want to be “just as powerful” and secondly it is no longer optional if you wish to do all the content as they have introduced a gating mechanism with “agony”, so bascially repeating the mistake other games made years ago and have since worked out is a dumb idea, ‘agony’ is just ‘radiance’ from LOTRO all over again.

There’s a 4th category though. Those that honestly care about the game and would like to see it floursih for years to come. They want to give some feedback and are desperate for being heard. But they feel ignored, so their response is repeated…louder each time, until finally they snap.

I’m all in the category 4, except for the snap part. But I’ll admit, Chris White stating the community ‘loves the new changes’ is a big slap in the face.

Well, why not? Don’t you have fun doing the dungeon? Do you think it’s so awefully boring that you deserve something in return. Do you bring any money to the company by doing so? (Not by spending cash in their shop I mean).

Well you know the slogan with which they advertised this game: “Our time is now” NOW not when you optained the new gear not when you put “hard work” in it not when you’ve spend hours and hours in the game. As someone who has just started the game you will still have plenty of disadavantages in WvW for example and even on 80 you will still be worse than someone playing that game for a huge amount of time. And thats enough I think.

And btw I don’t mind doing something for my gear. I decided to craft my exotics and this will take me quite some time but after all I decide how to have fun in the game, I decide how I want to achive something and I refuse to run in the hamsterweel for the next shiney gear and the next and the next…

It’s a personal effort after all , if you are a casual gamer who maxed his exotic set and have probably second BiS inslot why would you want ascendant gear for +5+10+20 stat ? Where will you be using that “hardcore” gear , once a week in wvw or the daily dungeon ? It’s the same previous mmo argument and here it comes: play harder ( work harder ) then the rest get an extra edge it’s just like in the real life or is it not ? No one is forcing you to do it you will still be competitive either way. So why cry about an extra +5 stat you don’t need and won’t use ?

This is a little hard to follow but I’ll try. You’re suggesting that because I want a gear plateau I’m not hardcore or competitive? Well I suggest that because you want a stat advantage you are neither. Stat advantages are a refuge for the skill anemic to obtain the thrill of a victory they “earned” by repetitive easy tasks before the challenge even took place.

I want an even playing field so I can truly measure my skill over others and “in yo face! son!” them with 100% assurance that it was my own skill and experience that got me the victory. I’ve been competitive since I first saw a row of quarters on an arcade fighter. Sorry but your argument is irrelevant and indicative of the slow decline of challenge in gaming.

This, very much so, and very well said.
I want players’ skill and experience to speak for them, not gear.
Especially in any kind of PvP, but as a primarly PvE games, in PvE as well.

All the lot with Legendary items don’t impress me at all.
What impressed me? All-Mesmer runs in end-game instances in GW1.

I want my party members to take me in because of my skill, not because of my gear.
If I stay alive and you die all the time, I want the satifaction of being better and/or more experienced than you. The fact that my gear has +1000% resistance won;t give me that.

Can we at least get a promise on no trinity and no raiding? Or is it only a matter of time?

Anet doesn’t make promises, because then their players will get mad when they eventually break them.

Source: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/139a4j/official_post_ascended_items_on_german_forums/

That’s the worst part, they’ve broken the trust of their userbase and now whatever they say can’t be taken at face value. This is what is making me seriously consider a refund, even if they take some action on this (which seems unlikely atm), whatever they say about the future of the game has to be taken with huge bag of salt. So, staying with the game, even if they normalized ascended with exotics (which they won’t) and said they won’t do it again in the future, it becomes impossible to trust them again because they already went ahead and exacted changes that blatantly disregard their stated design principles. CCP had that confidence shot, but they never got to the point of actually implementing that garbage, IIRC, and that makes a huge difference in how it affects player trust.

The worst part is that they are well aware that they betrayed that trust and don’t give a single alpine skelk about it. Or maybe the worst part is that they seem to wants us to believe that addressing the need of those people who hit the gear tier plateau for more gear tiers is not a Sisyphean task and that they’ll certainly be satisfied forever with this new tier, so don’t worry.

I enjoyed GW2 very much recreationally, but I stopped playing a while ago awhile at lvl 25 for some reasons:

1. All my friends said the end-game is non-existant. Thats not neccessarily bad – but it didnt meet their expectations.

2. I didnt rly enjoy the pvp…was too confusing and I got overwhelmed with a lot of concepts in the game (like crafting for example)

Now I decided to give it a try again and I see a lot of people are complaining about the new patch. I’m curious, why is that, what has changed so substantionally ?

The endgame is nonexistant because there isn’t supposed to be any.

People are complaining about the new patch because ArenaNet implemented a number of large changes to the game that was explicitly stated they’d never do. They went back on their design philosophy.

I really don’t understand what the big deal is? They’re giving us more game to play, what’s wrong with that? If you hate progressing your character then why don’t you just sit at level 1?

You people complain about anything. If Anet bumped max level up to 85, you’d complain then too about “hey you said no grind!” Seriously they’re giving us new content, totally for free, and you complain? What the hell is wrong with you.

Have a look @ GW2 manifesto, the core principle of the game. We bought the game for what it was.
Aanet is putting in a content that is a complete 180 degree backflip from their original design of the game.
Free, yah. But it’s a whole different game now, ala World of Warcraft alike.
If u liked grinding ala WoW, why on earth were you playing GW2 (referring to prepatch)?

But the entire game is a progression of your character. You climb 80 levels then work on maxing slots and legendaries. Did you seriously think Anet was just gonna leave it at that and let the game end after that? What developer would put millions of dollars into building an MMO and then not expand it? What do you have against them adding new stuff anyway? Haven’t you seen all the old content yet?

No it’s not about progression. I got to 80, luv exploring and leveling, took me 3 weeks to get there. And then i had fun doing dungeons with my guildies. Hunting for skin. It’s not about progression, it was about “FUN”.
Come again.
