It’s pretty common knowledge by this point that engineers and rangers are the worst classes. So anyone saying “we’re in a great place” probably hasn’t played any other classes to a great extent. Engineers are tons of fun, and skill can get you through all the content. But the classes are not balanced, and the better professions can do everything Engineers can, just much easier, and much better.

There’s something that has been slowly being suggested to us this whole time. It’s kind of a secret. You have to decide whether to make your character more suited for WvW or PvE, but the process is mostly the same.

When playing your Engineer, press F12; you’ll see a menu pop up. Choose the middle button.
When you’re on this page, you may see some empty slots that you haven’t filled up yet. Click one of them.
The details don’t matter, but if you want to be good at PvE, choose the “mesmer” or “guardian” or “warrior” option.
Play as normal. Just note that your autoattack and other skills are much stronger now. It also removes the bugs from the majority of your traits.

This is NOT an exploit and I’m pretty sure it’s completely legit. Plenty of Engineers I know have done this, and they’re still having fun.

It’s arguably one of the strongest builds available to Engineer at the moment.

In a game consisting of nothing but hybrid classes, we are the only class that pays hybrid tax. And we aren’t even the most versatile of the hybrids. Or the most powerful in offense or deffense Will a good engineer prevail over a mediocre ele? Sure, but a good player from profession x will always prevail over a mediocre player from profession y.

So true.. so true indeed.

And to the kitten posters in this thread, reread my original post. I readily admit that I do win the majority of my 1v1 encounters, but that is in spite of the engineer profession not because of the engineer profession.

To the person who said maybe engineer isn’t for me, I’m one of the very first engineers ever created in this game, play the class as my main and win WAY more than I lose.

I’m not quitting the profession, just warning people away from the class who are fooled by the lure of broken promises, and unfulfilled potential.

So I repeat myself, if you want to play a profession that requires you to work harder than most simply to be on less than equal footing, roll an engineer.

Roll it if you are interested in the challenge of being the underdog.

But caveat emptor… let the buyer beware.

But I’m trying, Ringo. I’m trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Interesting.
I just picked this game up a couple of days back, and brought the elementalist and engineer to 10, and have been trying to figure out who to run with as my main.
This seems to have a pretty valid complaint about engineers; and to those that say, “All you have to do is….” I can respond by saying of course, duh. ANY given situation has a solution, but the question is how laborious that solution is.
I really love the idea of the steampunk fantasy battler. I already love my Charr eng, but I really hate the idea of needing to be carried at the end of my journey!
I like the elementalist too; the worst complaint I’ve read so far is “you have to have d/d”.
Might be true. Disappointing to hear that this class doesn’t have chops to back up it’s “master of it all” scheme, though.

Having more fun than you is more important than winning the game.

The Grenade nerf is ok, guys! Let’s just use our other kits that haven’t been nerfed yet!

Like Bomb Kit…Oh wait.

What about Elixir Gun? No, that got nerfed too.

Flamethrower? Oh right, the “Miss” bug, which is 3 months old, still hasn’t been fixed.

Well, we can use turrets, the RNG elixirs, and the Tool Kit! Oh, and don’t forget our ever-useful gadgets. Who needs Shadowstep when you can self-cc yourself with Rocket Boots?

What a great class, right guys?

No one is “just” complaining about one skill that gets nerfed. One nerf is fine. Three nerfs are fine. Nerfing our class every single patch without even making appropriate bugfixes for three months in a row is a slap in the face. Please don’t talk like you’re the most special snowflake in the world for trying to work around the numerous nerfs to the class.

Is it just me or does the proliferation of griffons make any one else think of a plot some where between Needfull Things and I Robot?

Twas the night before winters, when all through the pit
Not a creature was stirring, not even a skritt.
The griffons were cuddled beside us with care,
In hopes that Tixx soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of plushies danced in their heads.
And I in my town clothes my pet on my right
Had just settled in for a quiet winter’s night.

When in lions arch there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the fractal to see what’s the matter.
Away to the waypoint I flew like a flash,
Tore open the package and threw up the cash.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old Sura,
And I laughed when I saw him, and ruptured my pleura!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had something to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
he signalled the griffon, it turned with a jerk.
And laying its beak aside of my neck,
it started its feeding and chomping like heck!

He sprang to his blimp, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he flewout of sight,
“muuuhhhaahhhaa”

A Question, why are elixirs RNG?

in Engineer

Posted by: Zenguy.6421

Zenguy.6421

I use elixirs, but only for their dependable effects. The rest is in the “Oh, what the hell, lets give it a shot – there’s a small chance it might actually help” category. If I use them for a random effect its either because a) I’m desperate and will give anything a go however unlikely, or b) the fight is a done deal and I may as well throw some elixirs around just for fun.

The slow throw animation for elixirs really sucks, though. I end up using my toolbelt elixirs selfishly simply because that’s the only way to be sure the time spent throwing them ends up being useful. If the ally I really want to help happens to be in the right place when the elixir lands, all the better.

Now if the thrown elixirs granted a second boon for a shorter time, that would make them useful (as there’d be 2/3 chance of getting something you wanted, even if only for a very short time) and make those tool belt slots worthwhile.

Why not make Super Elixir similar to Geyser?

in Engineer

Posted by: Orissa.1872

Orissa.1872

@Travail

The matter is that for dynamic fights we’re using regeneration and Healing Turret water fields (if you’re quick enough). Super Elixir is perfect stationary heal, that’s why it stacks with regeneration. There are many bosses or tougher monsters which are nearly immobile, so melee fighters are forced to move around tiny space. That’s why centering Super Elixir on such monster is keeping additional regen on melee fighters, who are also tanks. Dodging is not a problem, it’s not moving fighters far away from healing field (if it does at all), also it’s possible to dodge only 2 times over Super Elixir duration

In WvW it’s a skill meant to provide sustain during the siege. Gate breaking or defense, doesn’t matter. We’re puting it for melee fighters, siege machinery operators, gate repairing people. Noone is moving away from healing field. Healing during movement is only regeneration again, that’s what we’re paying for mobility

We don’t need Super Elixir to be mobile or put healing buff, it’s like Time Warp would give full duration quickness for just crossing the bubble or Well of Blood would apply full healing instantly. Super Elixir needs just improved healing, buffing some numbers here (especially healing power scaling). But general mechanics are fine

This exactly sums up how I feel as well! I mean there are also more glaring problems with the class but I figured this was one of the more important ones to be tackled for support engineers. Cheers because I thought I was the only one that wanted more burst heals. I feel like the game would go a long way in having League of Legends style supporters (I’m unsure if you’ve played it or not). Basically, the supports in that game either have a high value/high cooldown shield or heal that they can use on a single ally. Knowing when to use those defensive abilities could very well determine a 5 v 5 PvP Teamfight.

While I feel that some classes have LoL-like support capabilities (Elementalist, Guardian), others don’t (Necromancer, Engineer, Mesmers…etc). In general, I feel like a lot of the coefficients/values on support abilities need to be re-evaluated and looked at again because Guardians and Elementalists reign supreme in the support archetype. They have higher numbers, more abilities, more boons, and shorter cooldowns. As a primer, this is NOT a call to nerf these two classes. This is where other classes should be brought UP TO to feel impactful. Just take a look at these two examples:

Necromancer
Deathly Invigoration: Heal in an area when you leave death shroud.
Heals for 8 + level * 1.8 + 40% of Healing Power.

Elementalist
Healing Ripple: Heal nearby allies when attuning to water.
Amount healed = Base Amount (1302 @ 80) + Healing Power

Granted that there are various other factors to consider such as availability, why are these two numbers not closer to each other since they are functionally almost the same spell? They obviously are both very interesting traits…and the apples to oranges argument doesn’t apply here either because of how inferior the Necro’s group heal (With 1700 Healing Power at Level 80, heals for ~832) is compared to the Ele’s group heal (At 1700 Healing Power at Level 80, heals for ~3002). Cleaning up a lot of these numbers and buffing all of the other classes’ support options would go a long way in diversifying the support archetype and making it worthwhile and fun for every profession.

Generally, I feel that a game designed around PvP (and it seems that’s what players expect from Guild Wars 2) should be designed around burst damage, and burst heals. That doesn’t mean sustained dps/HoT builds can’t also be there (it definitely has it’s place in WvW and PvE dungeons) but we all know burst is king in most PvP encounters.

This means short duration bursts of damage along with short duration bursts of healing. This also means tanks or “bunkers” should have short duration blocks and reactionary abilities to counter those short bursts of damage (which they do, and it’s something I feel Anet basically got right.) This also means CC should be focused around quick interrupts with the goal of stopping burst damage/healing in it’s tracks, in order to gain tactical advantage (which, again, is something Anet implemented decently well.) We have burst damage, counters for burst damage, and anti-burst themed CC; all that’s missing is the burst healing.

Without it, they have seriously alienated healer players coming over from other games. Doing away with the trinity in general is a mistake, IMO, but getting rid of “dedicated healing” is the one that hurts Guild Wars the most (they do, after all, still have “bunker” builds, which have their place in the game.) In PvE, everyone has to largely rely on themselves for their own healing, so you have more homogenized builds. In PvP, some of the tactics of engagements are lost when there are no “squishy, but powerful” healers to protect. It’s basically just a brawl, with any enemy being just as good a target as anyone else.

As it stands now, you basically just rotate through all your healing spells as soon as they are off cooldown, hoping that it’s providing a benefit over time for your team. I’d like to be able to make more of a noticeable impact than that with healing skills, and would like to see just as good a tradeoff for sacrificing damage in favor of healing as bunker builds get for sacrificing damage in favor of survivability.

I respect all your opinions guys,so don’t get me wrong….but…are you serius? All the engineer comunity(the biggest part it seems) cry for the granade kit????
There were so many ppls using granades, ignoring the fact that a lot of other stuff is completely broken (apart elixirs) ??
And now you want to go strike for…granades lol???
It sound strange to me see so many engineers cry for granade ignoring the fact that turrets sucks, gadget are useless…other kits apart from granates only collect a couple of “miss”,rifle skills like net shot is a permanent “miss”,jump shot is slow as the hell, blunderbuss goes CD without hit anything unless you are lucky and your net shot got the enemy, toss elixirs randomness that in a fast and professional PvP is a pain, because you cannot put out any strategy on teh RGN of toss elixirs, etc etc etc etc.

And you , cry for granade….ok.
Seems the nerf was needed if so many engineers were playing just spamming granades here and there , considering the tons of other stuff the engineer have, and no one even noticed how much broken is .

I apologize for my english.
Regards.

So many engis were using grenades because so many of our other skills, including the majority of the flamethrower kit, are utterly broken. This wouldn’t a big deal if we got weapon stats, but we don’t. Not only did they nerf grenade kit by the way, they also nerfed elixir gun. To anyone using a support build with ranged dps, either by gun or nade, was totally screwed.

Rifle Engineers are gimped now because the one weapon sigil slot cripples them because their other skills and best heal are useless now. Flame Thrower Engineer would be viable if it worked, but it doesn’t. Toolkit is a pvp kit and is mostly useless in PvE. Grenade Engineers do no damage worth while anymore and support engineers can’t heal properly anymore. Gadgets are either bugged to the point they don’t function or out right suck and we all know how “great” turrets are.

This wouldn’t be so bad if the devs would just release a statement telling us what the hell is going on here. I think nades these nerfs are fine and dandy in PvP/WvW, because toolkit is actually worth a dang there, but in PvE, they need to sort that out.

How would you feel if you had to reacquire every single exotic your main character has because of a massive overhaul change that will ensure he’s still not as powerful as before, even after spending 17 gold to regear him.

Oh and a side note:
Can anyone explain why a melee character like Warrior gets 200 more rifle range than an Engineer, a ranged class, automatically by default? Am I the only one that sees there’s something seriously wrong with that?

(edited by Kintoun Zetto.2651)

Near 100% uptime on a light field… Seems pretty amazing to me.

If light field removed conditions on blast and leap attacks, it would be alright. Retaliation isn’t a particularly great boon anymore, especially in PvE where mobs hit relatively slowly. Unless you’re running with classes who are shooting ranged projectiles, IMO light fields aren’t that great.

Now, if this was a water field, it would be great as-is.

A week ago, Engineer’s were a fairly decent class that, if you tried hard, researched and played well, you could do fantastically in pretty much any PvE situation. Playing the Engineer was like being Batman. Yes, you’re a super hero, but all your friends have super powers and you don’t. Super strength, super durability, etc. But even if you didn’t have super powers, by being clever and making use of the little gadgets and gizmos you’ve managed to figure out, you could still be an integral part of any dungeon party.

Now?

Now Engineers aren’t Batman. They’re more like The Red Bee. Don’t know who that is? Not surprising, he was quickly killed off and left behind, kind of like Engineers in dungeons.

I loved my Engineer. Now it’s severely busted and we all have to pray that maybe AreaNet will fix the class. In the meantime, playing Engi is extremely depressing, don’t bother, seriously roll something else, you’ll be more interested in playing the game.

" I was on my lv 16 engineer, who shoots 16 times with his normal attack to kill a lv 8 critter."

Just as an example, most Warriors who have even an inkling of how to play their character can solo three to four equal level VETERAN mobs (especially in the <40 range) without breaking a sweat and kill them all in significantly less than 16 hits.

That’s how screwed Engis are.

Apparently, turning off the ability to preview “others” armor was far more important than working on GUESTING which was promised from the beginning…

/endsarcasm

My guild is spread out between more than one homeworld. I can’t just warp across the Homeworlds of Tyria to see some of my guildies’ new armor…unless I want to spend a week there before coming back to our Homeworld, if I am even able to because of server populations being “full” all the time. Previewing was the next best thing.

Another thing: Almost all of my alts are clothies or leathers. I shouldn’t have to create a plate wearer for the sole reason of seeing one of my guildie’s newest rare drops. Not to mention that sometimes I am unable to log out to a suitable alt in time to see the link…Especially if I am in an instance of some sort, whether it be a PS or a dungeon.

It just doesn’t make any sense. Even with clipping/texture issues, I could admire from afar the things my friends were wearing.

Please bring previewing everything back…

“The Engineer is a highly versatile class.” = We don’t really play this class. Not sure why people are.

“While it doesn’t have the long range capabilities of the Ranger, or the melee capabilities of the Warrior or Guardian, they are comfortable at medium ranges in most fights.” = You are very squishey but we don’t want you to be able to range like you should. But you can throw (now weaker) grenades longer than you can shoot your dumb shotgun.

“They have a lot of control, and use their boons to keep themselves (and allies) alive in a fight” = Control won’t work on most bosses though – that would be way to powerful. Also other classes are much better at keeping their allies alive and applying boons. You really shouldn’t play in team environments / dungeons. You are not that much help and others can do everything you do but better.

“They can use different kits based on the situation, but this extreme versatility comes at a cost in damage on their main hand weapons.” = sucks. Your damage is even more embarassing. You’ll have to find ways to stack 25 stacks of might on yourself just to do damage like other classes do by spamming ‘1’ with no boons.
Versatility is a word we came up with to mean not really good at anything.
