Did GW2 lose its identity?

I’m a new player, don’t have an 80 yet. Reading the forums and reddit it seems HoT is ‘L2P or GTFO’.

Still enjoying the core game, but not looking forward to HoT.

Don’t judge the game by all the salt you see on forums and reddit…

HoT has great maps, the elite specs are quite fun, gliding is great.

Raids are actually very accessible in this game as there is no gear treadmill or keys, search for WoodenPotatoes zero-to-hero challenge.
What drives most people away from raids is their own fears.

TLDR; What makes GW2 different than any other generic MMO right now?

How would you convince a WoW player for example to come and play GW2 today? Because I can’t think of anything else but “well it’s like WoW, but different…it has asuras instead of gnomes, and you don’t need 100 addons to be able to get into a raid…yet”

Lack of gear grind resets. Effective level scaling. More interesting combat. Designed to avoid other players ever being a negative thing to see. Different story. Different aesthetic in-game.

I appreciate that you feel like permitting DPS meters is a bad thing, but (a) they were there before this, and (b) hostility comes from players, not meters, even if they are the current wave of excuses.

Also, ultimately, we really are just another bunch of murder hobos, running about committing mass murder for cash. It’s really not that distinct from other MMOs.

with GW2 now focusing on raids, and the community shifted massively with this change.

Um, no, they have the smallest possible team working on raids. Because it’s content that designed for a more homogeneous minority, they can do more with fewer resources.

The amount of salt, elitism and player base split makes this game no different than any other MMO now, especially with meters being introduced to the game.

There really isn’t much more elitism than there was at launch, or maybe you didn’t try to run dungeons back then, when people kicked you for all the same reasons they kick these days: not enough tokens, too few API, wrong gear pinged, didn’t like your choice of dyes. (Salt… hard to judge I think. Seems about the same to me.)

You also now have mandatory holy trinity as well if you want to succeed in top tier content. Not needed for open world content, but like I said that content it’s either old or not really relevant.

No, there’ is no “holy trinity” — there is a huge diversity of potential builds and team comps. I don’t see it any differently than people insisting on “zerker or bust” for dungeons, when that wasn’t necessary either.

You don’t have any gear treadmill, but you now have the mastery treadmill if you want to succeed in end content, it’s like potayto/potahto, still a treadmill that will get obsolete eventually.

Um, no again. Sure, some of the masteries are busy work, with only a niche value outside of HoT’s story. Some of them are awesome and never obsolete, even in a future expansion, including gliding, autolooting, fractal benefits (for those who fractal).

Plus, you can progress at your own pace (or at least, I did and I rarely felt at a major disadvantage compared to my friends who rushed it).

That’s nothing like traditional gear grind, where you cannot play any content without grinding the gear and it has no relevance in the next expansion.

TLDR; What makes GW2 different than any other generic MMO right now?

  • Gliding
  • The same max gear it’s had since the first year.
  • Cooperative in all forms of PvE.
  • No subscription and an F2P option that is very close to the game itself.
  • Nearly everything can be PUGged.
  • It’s fun for a ton of people.

At the very least, tell people they can try GW2 for free & experience the vast majority of the game without spending a dime, until they are ready to commit.

My demands. The game should be playable solo yet at the same time be challenging enough to require groups. It needs to require skill to play yet the mobs should be easy enough for me to play at a casual level whenever I only want to log on and kill stuff.

All drops must be frequent, worthwhile and valuable so I can sell them for good amount of gold. Everything should drop at a fast enough rate for me to quickly make whatever project I’m working on so I don’t have to buy the items, yet be worth selling when I no longer need them so I can make lots of gold. Exotics should drop frequently, always be a unique skin that I like and stats useful to me and worth several gold.

The gem/gold exchange needs to be regulated. It’s always high when I want low and low when I want high. This is unacceptable and it’s evidence of ANet being greedy and incompetent (because what other explanation could there be?). The items in the gem store should also be cheaper. Just because I can get them for free by farming gold is no excuse for items costing $5 to $12.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Best option IMO will be to disable gliders of other players in options, then all of us can decide: I want to see this or not.

Totally agree with this. Was running around with maybe 15 in VB the other day just doing event chains and we went to jump off a cliff to hop onto a lower road and then suddenly I couldn’t see my character at all with 4 or 5 of them having huge gliders. I realized if I had needed to land in any specific spot at all in that or any situation I’d have not been able to. While I think players should be able to be as flash as they want, please don’t make it to the detriment of everyone else. (I’m including the Raven glider in this but there are several others like that flaming bird one as well.) A check box or some sort of toggle would be greatly appreciated.

DoT: condi necro is pretty fun. A little bit slower to ramp up, so things take a second or two longer to die. And when they don’t take longer, you run into the problem of them dying before you can give them the conditions you put on yourself, which is kind of embarrassing: standing there bleeding, poisoned, and tormented, hoping you don’t tick to death, and you did it all to yourself. Scepter/dagger works very well for condi, plus with a dagger you can trait for a run speed increase which is always good QoL. Out of sheer stubborness I put condi sigils onto a greatsword to swap to, but I won’t pretend it’s optimal; it’s just fun.

You never know. My precursor came from the King Jalis Refuge jp in Snowden Drifts.

I traded in six frozen weapon fragments yesterday, thinking “mmm, two ecto”.

I got the Leaf of Kudzu, and a Shamans weapon used to make the corrupted shard.

Slippy, this is something I’ve never done before so I hope you take no offense to it, but could I rub my mouse on you? Perhaps my keyboard, as well? And if you hold really still, I can grab my computer tower… Oh, and I would be remiss if I left out my router. Would the cables be taking it too far?

Just going to end the thread here. Everyone has the right to play however they want. You absolutely cannot come in here and say I have the right to do whatever I want and other people have to play with me. The commander, has every right to not want to include people for not joining team speak, or playing the builds they want because its his/her raid. If you don’t like that go make your own raid or go do your own thing which is what you are doing anyways by not being a team player. You can’t have it both ways.

Dear Anet,

I’ve been playing GW2 for about 4 months now, and i come to the forum on a daily base and i decided to make a list of thing that are currently wanted by players:

- Auto-crafting of everything with auto-buy from TP.
- Auto-sell of every minor/major runes to a merchant or the TP (according to witch one is the most profitable.
- A rework of all armor skins.
- A rework of all the skills and combo fields.
- A total make over to dungeons.
- Press F to win but challenging content.
- Intergrated GPS for HoT content.
- A 1 year plan on things to come to GW2. We want to know EVERYTHING but please no spoilers.
- The ability to buy anything on TP for 1 bronze coin and resell it for 10 gold.
- Bring back the fountain in LA. ( please add floating rubber ducks too)
- PvP where no one dies and both teams win.
-Mounts like rainbow unicorns and motorcycles.
- Rubber matresses that bounce you back to where you fell from in jumping puzzle.
-Heroes so we dont have to use the LFG panel.

I could make the list longer, but there is only so much a small team can do in one day.

Looking foward to patching my game on Thursday,

K. Stroff

Auto-loot is nothing like sending an automated ‘golem’ out to play for you. Geez.

I have to admit, I only skim your posts, as they are so long, and repetitive. Sorry. Fewer words, and less repeating the same thought, over and over, might gain more views. Just a friendly suggestion. Take it, or leave it, of course.

Good luck.

Technically there is a way to semi-“auto-salvage” gear and loot if you right click your salvage kits. I told my fiance about it and he went from whining about having to salvage everything to going right back out to farm so he could play with the auto-salvage button again.

As for the auto-selling…is it really that big a deal to find a random merchant on the map or (if you have one) go to the guild hall and sell things off? And auto-gathering sounds more like a cheat code to me than playing the game as intended.

I guess I forgot you can do that with kits. I sure do it daily with my Copper- and Silver-Fed Salvage-o-Matics. (Why I put off buying those things is beyond me, btw!) Anyway, with a right click, I’m noticing a huge savings in time and it’s fun as heck to count the goodies fly by as I go through a batch.

Well, minor sigils and runes really aren’t worth the effort to anyone who has a max level character. There are thousands of them sitting on the TP which nobody wants to buy. I’d like to be able to add them to the “junk” list, but that’s just a personal wish and would probably take too many resources to properly code into the game. Guess I’ll just have to live with manually selling them off to the vendors.

for the same reason I am forced to look at longbows that fire unicorns, and backpacks that make obnoxious weird sounds (job-o-tron)
if I have to suffer obnoxious visuals and sounds from other players, then so should you, besides, are you really that bothered by a slightly bigger glider you will see maybe once or twice a day?

5 gold says that the OP plays a bear/bow ranger……

But in all seriousness, I believe strongly in the power of communication and the great advantage of TS. It’s an easy application to download, and if you download Overwolf (an Anet approved overlay application) you can have your TS, web browser, and all kinds of fun stuff accessible in game, without the need to minimize. If your poor computer can’t handle both GW2 and TS, then you are an individual with amazing determination to be playing WvW with the lag you must be experiencing!

I often advertise TS in map chat, letting people running with us know where to join up for voice coms. I will admit, I am RIDICULOUSLY spoiled, since my guild is really chill, respectful, and tends to be on the quiet side, and our commander is one of the best I’ve ever run with (not a shameless plug at all, haha).

A GOOD commander won’t stay in one place. He/she will move from side to side, back and forth. Often it’s really hard to follow these movements exactly without hearing the call outs. Also, there are times that the commander will call for CCs, big bombs, heals/waters. And if the rest of the team is on point, they’ll be calling things out as well. Being able to HEAR all these things around you gives you a HUGE advantage.

I totally understand that there are some disgusting commanders out there. Trust me, I KNOW. So just don’t join their TS. But if you don’t want to be in TS, don’t be upset if you’re not treated like the special snowflake that you are.

The thing about the ones who are racist, sexist or generally rude is they often don’t think they are when really they’re alienating a lot of players. The people that don’t want to join TS because of the general rudeness, sexist remarks, racism whether mild or extreme aren’t doing so because this one time someone said something mean. They don’t join because more often than not they hear these remarks over and over again and decided their life is better off not hearing people. You don’t need TS to stick to the commander, push, regroup, blast, change direction etc, if you’ve ever done anything slightly organised you can read the situations and know where to be.

This isn’t about talking either, it’s about having to hear this rubbish while being on TS whether you talk or not.

I don’t generally join TS because having fought the server we are linked with I came to the conclusion they’re a bunch of immature players who happily gank others, spam emotes and bleed them out for no reason than to be salty. I don’t care if the commander has a voice like the smooth crooning of Frank Sinatra, I won’t join because I think they’re a bunch of kittenbags.

If those remarks are not intentionally inflammatory, maybe it’s time to grow a thicker skin. You know, despite what some splinters of society and certain blogs are trying to make you believe, you do not have a duty to take offense.

The thicker skin argument is a strawman.

It’s an excuse for crappy behaviour. Period.

Why not try not being adults?

OK, here’s how to be adult:

So people don’t want to be in TS because they don’t like what is said. Exactly. Players in guilds that get on TS do so for more reasons than just fight coordination. They also socialize with each other. Not every Tom, kitten, and Harry is going to get along. If you’re not going to fit in socially with a guild on TS, we don’t want you on TS with us either nor reading our squad chat. It makes for bad social situations. Have you considered that some “adult” guilds are 18+ or have requirements such as “mature player”? Is someone going to complain that adults are in the wrong because the game is 13+ so it is unfair that we don’t allow players under 18 to join when the chat is inappropriate? Adults know they have choices with who they socialize and play with and don’t need to be making demands to be included in something that isn’t going to mesh in the first place.

BG wants to stay the top server, even if it means stacking to no end and beating up 2 dead servers, like being number one means anything these days. Everyone is moving down the tiers to try and find good fights again. Mass movement this weekend from mag and tc, have yet to see how badly, but the next few weeks should be telling.

People been asking tier one to destack for like ever, and it’s at the point where BG will never destack because they keep reopening to restock instead. So instead, might as well do the reverse and leave them up in tier one by themselves, there’s no need to build counter servers to them anymore because they run when competition comes around anyways. At least the population IS spreading out once again to the lower servers.

When servers rotate to fight them, just take the week off. They bored servers fighting them, now it’s time to do the same to them, it will be the only way to get guilds to eventually move off from them.

As usual this will be marked as a matchup thread and closed by a moderator who’s not reading the thread. Tier one is now the joke tier.

At least Wow handles stealth in a more sensible way, if a stealth walks in front of you there’s a chance you can see their outline and hear the noise that a stealth person is around you. They also pop out of stealth for any attack, well other than sap which breaks on damage anyways. No need to carry around stealth traps.
