Right Guild wars a G-rated game is considered violent. It shows how ignorant the media types are. If I were a parent I would be much more concerned about games where you could chop cyborgs up into little pieces with blood and gore in full hd glory and rip out their spines. Even better still bank robbery simulators shooting civilians, cops and guards dead etc. I dont need to name the games: if you watch Youtube game reviewers / read gaming news online / own Steam, you probably know what their names are. Btw what is GTA?

Someone above listed the bugbears by decade but got one a bit wrong. In the 80s it wasn’t music and TV that was the root of all evil, it was heavy metal music and Dungeons & Dragons. So, yes, apparently board games can cause people to worship the devil and become murderers, as well as encouraging suicide.

As for Murdoch… Murdoch did change the news media, with the help of Roger Ailes. Fox News is simply the end result of a decades long move from actual news to newstainment. Murdoch’s background is in tabloids where scandal, gossip and manufactured stories are the bread and butter of the business. He took the tabloid format from print and applied it to the screen.

Fun fact: Fox News’ slogan of “Fair & Balanced” is often mocked, but it is usually factually correct. The news content generally is “fair & balanced”, the problem is that 95% of what is on Fox News is not news. They give you the news story, during a news break, and the few seconds that the story lasts for generally covers everything to appropriate jounalistic standards. But then those few seconds of balance are thrown out the window by hours of one-sided discussion.

The poor transparency along with anets mistakes made these teams progressively lose more faith in the game. Just like you can see in fellivars posts response, it really doesn’t seem like anet understands the path they’re taking. Anyway, once the team had a bad streak players left. When they left the team(s) had a slow process where they constantly tried different people. Eventually one of the teams more or less collapsed, leaving the players trying to find a team (and being unable to). Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of the once huge DI guild have quit the game now.
Solution: Soloq for the people that couldn’t find a team and kittenING transparency.

You have NO idea how long I could keep going. Do you think I’m even ALMOST done on the list of people I could make? NO, arenanet. The list is kittening massive. I could mention Mace stun, no scrub, get stomped, estars, svarnir ninjas, Jackazzms team, cutthroats and the list goes oooooooon. But I’ll assume that I’ve made my point
This bullkitten of you guys being unable to even post on the forums regularly needs to stop. If it’s a staff issue then hire people. If you cant in your multi million selling game hire some community management then reach out to us. I know of an infinite amount of people, myself included that would gladly do that role for you FOR FREE.

The biggest two problems for this game is:
1. If you want to be competitive in it then you have to play it as if it’s your god kitten JOB. A job where there is no guarantee you’ll get paid in the future aside from your smirking boss saying ‘’in the future we might go into a profit’‘.
2. You guys refuse to talk to us, and you act as if your ’’We don’t want to say a word because we don’t want to commit’’ tactic is working when it’s made thousands of people quit.

Your approach to how to make an esport is WRONG, not different. Man the hell up, admit it, and fix your mistakes.

Why the kitten is the wall of champions in the mists still displaying the supposed ‘’beta tourny winners’’, member 1-5? Did you guys plan to have a huge beta tournament which turned out to be impossible without telling us?
AND WHY THE kitten HAS IT BEEN FOUR MONTHS AND STILL NO SIGN OF QP LEADERBOARDS? DO YOU NOT CARE ABOUT HOW UNIFNISHED PVP LOOKS FOR NEW PLAYERS?

I’m starting to feel like the ‘’pvp dev team’’ is a myth.

GREETINGS, CITIZENS. I originally planned to make a massive post where I displayed arenanets absolutely awful form of transparency, game issues, questionable design choices and a ton of other things. But this has been done before (and better), mainly by Follidus. If you have not already, read his post here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/The-possibility-of-an-outreach-program/first

You could also read arenanets response to see what part of the game suffers from now.

ANYWAY, the point of my thread is something different, I’m going to mention all the aspiring teams and players that have quit the game (and why) that I can think OFF THE TOP OFF MY HEAD. I can’t guarantee that all of these players left specifically because of the reasons I mention, but I can say that the vast majority of them have, and the rest left at least partially because of them.

TEAMS:
Team Pika:
The team followed the usual process. One player left another player got an invite from a team (dislocation to no scrub iirc) and since this game has no potential for a solo player to be competitive the three other players in the team, meaning that the three other players had to abandon the game and go back to WoW after some time of trying to find a team.

Solution that would have kept them in game: SoloQ

Team Synthetic Gods/Myrevenge
This team followed almost exactly the same formula as above. The team became far less active due to disgruntlement because they had absolutely no info on esport at all aside from a pathetic blog post which took months to come out on. When the team dropped in activity and efficiency because of this one player left, two of the players n the team tried to find a new one but they were unable to and guess what? Lack of soloQ? No official ratings? Good luck making yourself known out there to other good teams!

Solution: soloQ and transparency

Team FT:
This teams disappearance was rather recent. These were players that had been playing for as long as I. They eventually quit because they assumed arenanets stance on actually telling us what the hell is happening was arenanet not caring.

Team SuperSquad:
Surely you’ve heard of these, yes arenanet? Same story as the one with myrevenge. There were members that were not as committed due to how the game was going. With the lack of proper ladder there is no real goal and there is nothing that kept the team to stay competitive. Two of the members joined another team (guess which!) and one quit the game due to not believing arenanet any more on their esport claims. The other two were unable to find a team. And yet AGAIN, I want to repeat this point: If you don’t have a team then you CANNOT play the game competitively. Your silly idea of a soloQ is not going to change that. And as long as you don’t announce that you’re going to make a proper solo q people that are unable to find a team will CONTINUE TO LEAVE!

Solution: Transparency that would keep them motivated (they’ve been dedicated to this game since beta), a solo q (are you starting to see a pattern?)

Team legacy:
Another previous big name. They, too, lost faith in arenanet with their claim that they’d make this an esport. They believed it was just a lie to make the sales increase.
Solution: Talk to us!

Portal only has a range of 5000. That’s not that far. So either they’re a lot closer than you think, or they’re hidden just behind a hill or something already near the keep. Do a better job of looking around. Mesmers cant run 5000 units stealthed the entire time.

OP is exaggerating and doesn’t understand the ability enough to know how to defend against it.

I actually think ladders should be part of WvW.

I sort of miss my rogue characters in DAOC climbing up walls, stabbing people in the face that where working siege and then running off giggling before their friends turned up and got really angry.
Course, that actually had decent stealth mechanics and not this GW2 rubbish so we should be careful what we wish for… :o

Agree with most of what is said here. Its pretty lame that the feb patch and march patch was meant to be spvp and wvw focussed.

And yet in the patch there is only a new pvp map (nothing else and nothing at all for wvw) and yet more whole new types of content for pve.

So February = yet another pve patch. Even the big pvp/wvw patches of feb amd march are turning out to be pve patches.

GW2 = they only care about pve.

This has been an on going problem since release . we see events that cater to pve casual players , we see nothing in regards to wvw except breakout events and that is to make everything all better .

when i did my research for gw2 wvw systems i saw a lot of good things and things that had potential but the one big glaring issue that made me know right away that this game would suffer is that when it comes to wvw . arena net thought of the concept as an after thought because they knew very well the game as a pve with the side order of spvp would not be enough to draw people to play the game

take daoc for example . their system was straight forward . they had realm ranks for character progression and they had darkness falls . for a time it was not only rewarding to do rvr in that game but it was the END GAME . that is why people played daoc . but once trials of atlantis came out daoc became a shell of a game that it once was because then players could get the armor or weapons that was better than you could get from darkness falls .

when i look at guild wars 2 , i see no darkness falls , i see no character progression such as realm ranks . i see no incentive for players to participate in wvw at all unless they were the few ones that wanted their legendary . and after they did that what then ? are they now to make another character and do it all over again or wait until arena net comes out with an expansion so that they can get new abilities for their characters .
i think arena net has got the messages and they know this and are working hard big time to fix this enigma . but it all depends on the "higher ups " if they are getting the message and are listening because their lack of concern or even acknowledgement to this ordeal has been quite showing when they do not post on the very same boards we use to encourage us . keep us motivated , im all for the waiting game , what im not for is apathy from arena net .

I played Dark Age of Camelot for 8 years. I still think about going back because of how amazingly fun it was. I played GW2 for 3 months, and I had to MAKE myself do it for the hopes of WvW improvements. I have quit now for a few weeks, and I still sit here and watch as people “hope for improvements”. Maybe in 2-3 years at the current rate enough will change to make WvW worth actually playing…but that is a long time to wait.

While i dont feel that WvW is as ‘flawed’ as some people make it out to be, i do feel that WvW is the true meta game in gw2 and as such it is not getting anywhere near the attention that it should be.

for some people it is not the end game. for some people it is the ONLY game. logging in and seeing a queue on all 4 (4 ??? 1+ 3*1 more like it) borderlands only differs from having the server offline or being stuck on character selection because i can talk in guild chat.

how would pve players react if they logged in and found themselves in LA with a queue for all pve maps and all dungeons/fractals ?

Funny thing: I have only read your tl;dr and I already know that I disagree with each and every of your five points.

WvW is a hellova lot of fun for me already in its current, partially flawed form. Can’t wait for the March update.

No one is arguing that WvW isn’t fun. Of course it is fun! But that’s not an excuse to ignore all the huge flaws that WvW have right now.

From a commander’s point of view, WvW is a nightmare right now. All line battle, tactical defence, etc strategy is out the window because of culling, lag and AoE target limit. A zerg of 40+ men in tight ball formation is nearly indestructible because they cannot be seen (render too slow) and they cannot be killed (AoE target limit). Not to mention the huge lags generated when that 40+ men zerg charge at you. The only way to stop them is either have your own 40+ men zerg that do the same thing or have 10 ballistas and acs.

Face to face zerg vs zerg wise, there is literally nothing a commander can do right now. All the commander can do now is say “Stack up on me all” and then “Group stealth now” and then pray for the best. Tight Ball Formation, while being the simplest formation to make, also turns out be the the strongest formation due to culling, lag and AoE limit. This is ruining everything for the commanders. For a smaller zerg, there is no strategy, tactic and bright thinking that can stop a bigger zerg in tight ball formation right now.

The single dumbest thing in wvw is the AoE limit. Worst idea ever. Name me one ancient/medical battle where the commander used a ball up un-organized formation and somehow pull off a win. You only see this in GW2 WvW because ball formation somehow reduces AoE damage to everyone around. This is ridiculous.

Second dumbing thing is culling. This once again benefit tight ball formations, since that makes rendering super slow for the enemy. What would seem like a 7 men raid is actually a 40+ men zerg slaughtering you. So ball wins once again.

The third dumbest thing is the inability as a wall defender to hit attackers below. Although you are higher, your field of view is somehow blocked so you cannot hit them below. What are you kidding me? What is the point of that wall then? The defender is in a higher place so they should be able to hit anyone below. That’s the whole point. What is up with this field of view blocked garbage?

I agree the commander system is a mess. I still believe it should cost 100g for then initial Blue Dorito. But after you get a Dorito you should have to work to achieve higher ranks that will modify the way your blue dorito looks.

Maybe a 4-tiered commander system?
- 4th Class Commander:
You spent 100g cool story bro.
- 3rd Class Commander:
You’ve captured X number of towers.
- 2nd Class Commander:
You’ve captured X number of keeps.
- 1st Class Commander:
You’ve captured Stonemist X number of times.

That way players can instantly tell a seasoned veteran commander from a pay-for-gold commander. Some decent commanders will still have to work their way up to higher rank, but you should have to put in the effort to be respected.

2. The roles/rewards/recognition of Guilds in a game called ‘Guild Wars’ is lacking

I like some of the things you mentioned

- Guild name on NPC’s of claimed objectives.
- “Guild X has claimed Objective Name” displayed when claiming objectives.
- Ability to see all guild members on map and mini-map. Why not Yellow Dots??

3. WvW has devolved into ZvZ (ZergvZerg)

It really hasn’t. OP obviously hasn’t played with a small tight group of organized players specifically designed for WvW tactics. You can take objectives, defend objectives, fight zergs with a small 5 man group. You need coordination and strategy. There will always be zergs in any large scale PvP game. You can’t complain about it, you outsmart them. AOE limit has a small part, they should uncap the AOE limit and scale damage down based on how many people are getting hit. But saying that WvW is ZvZ is just griefing because you are getting killed by zergs and don’t know how to play smart.

The biggest disappointment I feel from WvW is that not only has it cost me the positive impression I had of Arenanet but that it’s cost me my guild.

I put a lot on the line banking that this game type would be sustainable, fun and interesting for the long haul. More than just my money – I put my time into forming a guild, recruiting, personally interviewing every single one of my members to make sure they were the type we were looking for, created a website, images, youtube, twitter, twitch, facebook – all of that.

I guess I took that gamble when creating a guild but kitten if I didn’t think that this game was the one and that Arenanet actually had commitment to their product. This game type’s failure has cost me some friends and that is the biggest disappointment.

This post really makes you (the OP) look like you’re griefing over the fact that your guild didn’t work out. Sorry but it’s not Arena.net’s problem your guild fell apart or your friends got mad at you and left.

3. WvW has devolved into ZvZ (ZergvZerg)

When I first started playing WvW in the BWE’s and the weeks and months after launch, zergs were a valid tactic, a tool to be used, but could be tactically outplayed using coordination. More often than not, at launch the guilds in TA were outnumbered vs the guilds from other alliances, notably Ascension Alliance, due to HoD bandwagoners and queues. I remember going against devastating, brutal zergs; even when you beat them they’d come back again and again knocking on your door over and over and over like a battering ram. Like a heavyweight boxing match they’d just keep bashing you again and again until you felt like you couldn’t take anymore. As soon as you finished the last of a zerg, regrouped and got your bearings – they were on your doorstep again. It was awesome.

Once when our homeworld garrison was occupied by Ascension, my guild and 2 other TA guilds were assigned to take it back. Using about 5 guys to attack Bay and draw swords, the rest of our motley crew hit garrison for all we were worth. Eventually they were too slow getting back to garri and we ninja’d it from them. It was a great feeling.

I told this long story because the WvW pop has consistently dwindled now to where ZvZ is the only way to play. Sure, you can try to play tactical with a small group and ninja an obj. A zerg can take it faster though. Sure, you can try and defend your only remaining objective on the map with the handful of people you have. A zerg will just ram right through you and your defenses though. Due to culling and the way the maps are designed, a zerg will get to a location just as fast and stealthily as a small tactical group (and maybe even more so).

Zergs even have the advantage in fights vs smaller groups, due to the AoE limitation. The AoE limitation is so utterly idiotic I cannot wrap my head around it. Zergs are a valid tatic – they shouldn’t just be the ONLY tactic. AoE limit needs to be lifted/increased and some other mechanics need to go into place to dull the power of zergs and ecourage more tactical play.

very dumb section of this post, a group of 9 can decimate a group of 30+ if you are smart and know when and where to hold them. as you can see in the picture below, we had 9 arrow carts at a perfect location to defend as we had a choke point. if we had tried to defend at quentin instead of langor we wouldve DEFINITLY been wiped, but we used.. wait for it.. wait for it… STRATEGY afterwards, we retook quentin and proceded to take durios and bravost before the enemy invaders were able to get enough discouraged people to come back and fight for it again, and by that time we had fully upgraded tower, and once again we decimated them. we did this one more time before they took our keep instead, and then trebbed us. we held them off for 30 minutes after our wall was down. so yea, you think zerging is the only way to make a difference? newsflash, small group can cap most stuff if they know something called Strategy. try it, it works, just take 3 towers and your helping more than a zerg taking a keep. there are plenty of rewards to doing towervs keeps, you can get more exp and karma and money from taking 3 towers, while in a zerg you attract another zerg and they will fight you for hours on end before you take the keep. taking 3 fully upgraded towers in less than 30 minutes. now where does that encourage zerging? where? honestly, zerging is incredibly boring, and not zerging is incredibly fun.

Why do arrow carts work vs. zergs?

Because they have a 50-man limit to their AoE, not 5.

The thing is I don’t want to play an arrow cart with its 3 skills, I want to play my character.

OP pretty much summed up my personal opinion of WvW.
The sad thing is: I bought SWTOR for the pve and it turned me from casual pvp into hardcore pvp (not going to argue about the quality of its pvp). I bought GW2 for WvW/PvP and its flaws turned me from hardcore pvp back into casual.

From my personal experience i can say everyone i know bought GW2 mainly for the WvW. My own impression prelaunch was that Anet intended to make an esport of spvp, but considered WvW the “endgame” for the majority of people. The whole design of WvW with its pve ruleset seems to emphasize this.

The only reason people are still here is that it’s free.

i think the ‘free’ aspect doesn’t apply to a lot of players, i’ll gladly pay my 12.99 €/£/$ to get rid of culling ! and the only reason i play this game is because DAoC is dead (development and updates stopped yeaaars ago) and warhammer isn’t in much better condition. no other game with a decent player base offers a DAoCesque experience.

I guess I took that gamble when creating a guild but kitten if I didn’t think that this game was the one and that Arenanet actually had commitment to their product. This game type’s failure has cost me some friends and that is the biggest disappointment.

(2.) When the game was in development, WvW was not really shipped or intended or even seen as what it has become (they spoke of it, if you really dig through their interviews, as a place for open world PvP, for PvErs to do some thing for their server, and for servers to have a passive buff. Its like an extended, expanded version of HoH from Guild Wars 1). I doubt ANet expected its explosive popularity, its large waves of praise, and, in many ways, they were caught unawares to what good they had made.

I don’t buy this argument for a second, even though ANet is extremely fond of repeating it ad nauseum.

Pre-launch, the VAST majority of guilds were WvW guilds. As a guild leader who created a guild and scoped other guilds for ideas, inspiration and structure, I know this. I saw most guilds were either WvW oriented, or PvX with a WvW focus. WvW was talked about constantly by everybody pre-release.

There is no basis for them to believe they had no idea that it was going to be as popular as it was going to be. Furthermore, this is the same bullkitten excuse they were giving back in September when WvW was suffering due to queues.

So what is it?

Did you really not know it was going to be popular pre-release even though all the evidence pointed to it?

Did you really not know in September is was going to be popular? and if you didn’t and you found out it was

Why are you still giving us the same bullkitten excuse in February!!! that you didn’t know how popular it was going to be?

At some point, we have to stop giving ANet a free pass and begin to hold them accountable for their handling of the product they sold to us with an expectation of timely, quality service.

-(future idea)make it so each server has a special environment so each match up the bgs will look and feel different from each other and these 3 different environments clash in EBG to make a whole new and crazy awesome battlefield in the middle each week(the random match up system would help make this even more interesting).
-human catapults that cause players to take damage and become slowed when they land the further the more intense this effect is
-Jumping puzzle population not being apart of the WvW population and maybe a reason to go into the jumping puzzle besides free siege and Badges of honor how about you make a crazy jumping section that leads into a back door to each servers keep. It will make the jumping puzzle a part of WvW and not something mostly for people who don’t feel like doing WvW but still want badges and/or siege.
-Sabotage mechanics and Siege Breaking and then causing tons of kits to be dropped on the ground adding a ton of weapons to the battlefield that might not be meant for doing damage but are great for CC.
-Better CC(overall not just in WvW)
-The ability to direct dolyaks
-outmanned buff needs to be switched with the orb buff(although i haven’t seen the buff in a long long time so it might already be that way)and it needs to scale with how little of a population they have compared to BOTH factions not just one(treaty system should take into effect both teams server side average it(as the point of a treaty is to have more numbers to fight a stronger force) then decide if they need an out manned buff).

Ya a lot needs to be done to fix WvW also a lot of depth needs to be put in place to allow for a more dynamic experience that feels closer to an actual on going battle.

-Increased distance between objectives
-Seamless Travel between BGs
-Orbs need to come back with a point tick and the outmanned buff but golems should be the only thing that can move them
-Their should be a treaty system to allow servers to ally against a dominant server or a server that has constantly won(maybe a perk to the commander is you have the ability to talk to other commanders and can do things with this commanders that other players couldn’t)
-A system combat this treaty system be it the one who isn’t in a treaty has to go into the keep holding the treaty(should be choosable by the server commanders) and kill both enemies npc treaty holders and rip both apart to break the treaty. Should also make it so only one treaty can be formed each week.(also any land taken once the treaty is started become a both servers areas and once the treaty is broken the first server to not be in combat and claim the keep gets it)
-Randomized matching build around a higher chance to fight servers of similar population
-Varied Objectives example- Tower of Storm causes random weather effects around the map some causing damage(lighning, hail, heavy winds) some helping out (rain, fog, snow for a limited view
-Guild representation that actually matters
-An upgrade System for the Hylek, Quaggan, Ogres and Dredge
- More Random Dynamic activities for the above factions(outfitting bases, defending more than just camps, attacking more than just camps, Defending supply dolyaks, Bringing their own supplies to towers/keeps/camps etc)
-The ability to place towers/keeps/camps as we please making a more dynamic combat zone sure their will be screw ups but what war in history doesn’t have those it will just cause you as a community to learn
- Commander UI when they bring up their map showing all their squads/squad leaders and objectives in a nice fashion making them less of a solider that everyone follows and more of a commander that tells people were to go
-(not entirely sure about this one)waypoints need to go and they need to be replaced with a fast form of travel.(if map size isn’t increased or opened up then this can’t happen) I have never seen a war were 100% of the soldiers traveled by foot when they had options to use animals or vehicles to move units around the battlefield way faster.
-a better tower upgrade system were the upgrades all feel a little more even that also makes you choose which upgrades you want and not just “lets get all of them in X order”so towers can feel different from each other even when fully upgraded and it allows for different minds to create equally effective outcomes.
- Progression system
-Defensive only siege or more defensive heavy siege(Mobile Walls, Portals that take certain number of shots till they break and redirect the shot back in a direction, Magical Siege that has specific effects be it a smoke screen that blocks damage numbers from showing up and vision or a fire field that does heavy damage to people who cross a certain area for a small amount of time)
-A better tier system for walls and doors
-A white Flag mechanic allowing a server wide vote to surrender saying “hey you won and get to advance(unless they choose random server selection)but lets reset the map so this losing server can have a chance to have some fun again” should probably only reset once 2 out of the 3 have white flagged

I wish I had written this, but I couldn’t have said it better.

I completely agree the OP and his points.

“Only a WvW player has 10g in the bank and thinks he’s rich”.

I thought I was rich when I had 10g from wvw then pve players said they had 2 legendary and spare 200g from the same play time.

This is just a rinse repeat of what tor was. They say there is great combat system with awesome rewards and ever evolving. When it is actually flawed, lacks reward and all round fail. The only reason people are still he is that it’s free. I would like to see wvw only achievable gear/items then pve get them 3-4 months later.

Remember to up vote the OP. Because even the forums gets a content update before wvw

Anyway I’m up for considering other MMOs with open world PvP as long the following apply.

- They do not require a subscription
- Do not feature a continuous gear grind where gear is king and skill/build is second.
- Does not require macro/3rd party utilities to be competitive.

I’d love to hear of one that meets those simple requirements. I’d even be willing to waive the subscription requirement.

Well you got 2 out of 3 that guild wars has.

You need a 3rd party VoIP to be competitive in WvW for GW2. There is no other way to effectively organize 5 or more players efficiently in GW2. The commander and squad system is simply a “zerg magnet” and completely useless for most guilds that run together with multiple groups. GW2 needs support for multiple groups running together that don’t want to lead the zone with the “Blue Zerg Beacon”.
