We use existing mechanics like player kills and event completions to award world XP, but it is an entirely new system with new pieces of data associated to it so unfortunately there’s no way to award retroactive progress.
Thank you for the response, Mike.
Is there any solace that players who have only participated in WvW can take from this?
There are players who have spent their entire GW2 lives in WvW, what does this mean for the countless hours that they’ve spent racking up those kills and keep captures?
An entirely new system taking no previous achievements into account seems to cheapen the enormous amount of time that many have spent in WvW and makes it seem as though we should have all just gone to PvE instead of all our kills, etc. being a waste to this point.
I understand the desire to get some sort of acknowledgement for previous WvW experience, but I don’t agree with the perspective of “I sacrificed my PvE progression for WvW.” If you’re a WvW veteran then you know darn well how unrewarding WvW was in comparison to PvE in terms of loot. Week after week, month after month you WvW all the while realizing the scores at the end ultimately meant nothing. But in the end it’s the choice YOU made in how you wanted to spend your time.
To say you’re going to be very disappointed that you’re not retroactively rewarded for a “unrewarding” part of the game you chose to play is just really the wrong attitude IMO. I put unrewarding in quotes because it’s a matter of perspective. I personally find WvW very rewarding in fun and loot even in it’s current state. The future of WvW is even more exciting to me — I’m really looking forward to it.
Please read my OP. I specifically said I love WvW and would not like to see these judgmental “you chose to play it” or “don’t play it if you don’t enjoy it” attitudes.
I’m excited for the future of WvW too. I think a lot of good changes are being made.
The underlying fear for a LOT of players is that ANet will decide that all of our achievements don’t count. Not that we deserve to be rewarded, but rather have EARNED the reward. These titles aren’t earned with a new currency. They are earned with the same achievements compiled together. They are calling that “World XP”, but that doesn’t mean it is anything new, just a different categorization. There are people out there with 100k kills. I only have about 25k. If those people have a higher title than me, they earned it as well.
But it’s not a real world economy and a market place. We didn’t sign any contract to play GW2 other than abiding to the ToS (which I am sure only about 1 in 100,000 actually read). So there’s no worker/employer type contract.
To be fair to Anet just a little, they did increase loot bags. So we are getting paid a little better for spending our time pew pewing.
Because this entire thread is ego-driven. Your ego is why you think you deserve these things.
The numbers in my WvW achievement tab are why I have earned these things. I am not entitled and I do not expect anything that I haven’t worked for in game or in life.
And zavulon, I’m not even sure what to say to that. If you work for something, you get paid. There was a recession of sorts in this game since launch. Now that this patch is saying the “recession is over”, I expect to be paid accordingly to my work since the good times are rolling and I haven’t seen a dime in months.
I participate in WvW to kill people and have fun, not to chase some silly title. I’ve killed a lot of people and I’ve had a lot of fun. How can they “wipe” that?
You still haven’t answered the question about why you care so much about what the PvE crowd is doing and/or getting. Are you afraid your months of experience is going to be insufficient to deal with them if they choose to use their fractal gear on you? Are you worried they’ll see you on the battlefield and not run in terror because they can’t see a title above your head saying you’ve killed a lot of people lol?
You and zavulon seem to be intent on insulting my ego, although I cannot fathom why I am being condemned for having an opinion. Of course, being a Republican from California, this is not my first rodeo.
For the record, I do NOT care what the PvE crowd is doing. They can have their gear and their legendaries, but when they come into WvW, which they very well might after this patch, there is absolutely NO reason that they should be on equal footing with me regarding titles. It is the same reason that I do not expect to get a Legendary just for running CoF path 1 a couple times. If they tell me that everything that I’ve done in WvW all of the sudden doesn’t count, THAT is what I care about. Who cares about how much fun a person has. They have a Legendary to show for their fun, and you are insinuating that I should have nothing to show for mine because they did not have the foresight to introduce progression at the start of the game or spend my time in PvE.
If anything, ANet should be grateful to us that we saw through the flaws and difficulties of WvW and kept playing because we loved it at its core.

I think it’s about fairness.
You know how to recognize a dedicated WvW player?
He has no legendary weapon and no ascended gear. And his exotics are probably from the karma vendors in Orr.
I have tons of achievement credit for things like supply used, dolyaks escorted, etc, but while PvE players have reaped rewards, I’ve got nothing.
Seems unfair that now, after PvE players have gotten everything they wanted, they can join WvW and start on equal footing with me and my 2000 dolyak escorts and 15,000 supply used which will count for nothing.
I certainly can’t switch to PvE and suddenly be on equal footing with them.
+1000
You, sir, are the answer until ANet weighs in on my question. Thank you for understanding what I was trying to say as not being entitled, simply receiving what you have earned.
They tracked stats? So what.
Because you worked x-amount of hours in the real world does not mean you always get new shiny stuff as soon as they hit the market place..
The IRS tracks stats.. You want them to give you everything based on past achievements?
What you are doing surmounts to whining or pitching a fit.
Actually it does. My job in the real world pays me this thing called “money” that lets me buy the new shiny things when they hit the market place.
Quit making a kitten out of yourself. I guess you are just sad that you quit WvW to go PvE because it wasn’t rewarding enough and now you have buyer’s remorse?
Wow, some arguments are just too mindnumbing to endure. For the record, I do WvW every single night and have done so for months and I’m against retroactive credit for titles/abilities. I think the idea is simply ludicrous and overtly greedy.

That kind of attitude is repugnant.
Here ANet does something nice for the community and you throw a temper tantrum about a rinky dink title that does not really mean anything significant other than kill count…
It’s not a temper tantrum. They are introducing more titles and rewards augmented onto the current system. If they were new requirements for World XP, something that hasn’t been tracked previously, it is understandable, but every single thing that you have ever done in WvW down to the supply used to build rams has been tracked and categorized in your WvW achievements tab. If they are using these categories that are already tracked, then yes, I expect them to count it.
No it is not entitlement, I already worked for the things I’ve accomplished.
If you would like to flame me for my personal views, I’m sure there are other threads you could derail instead of coming here.
There’s probably nothing you can’t accomplish with a surprise attack that uses enough golems. Really a surprise attack and 6 rams will get through two reinforced gates pretty quick and isn’t that tough or expensive to do.
If you had some means of rallying the PvE map completers you could probably set something up to raid the spots you need, one day at a time, one surprise attack at a time.
Siege can be obtained for free via the jumping puzzles. The borderland jumping puzzles are pretty easy.
Note that if the last vista you need is something like the one at Hills, you don’t even need to break the inner keep and breaking the outer gate is easy even with a small crew. The only really tough one would be the garrison…
Even then:
10 people
10 golems
shuttle supply in from some other map
Get a couple mesmers to help teleport you along
off-primetime water gate attack
break both gates
jump out of the golems
run up to the vista
You don’t need to capture the garrison, you just have to get inside and up to the dome long enough to click the vista.
Why on earth would they release new content and allow you to already have achieved it?
Because it is directly tracking things that have been tracked for months in your WvW achievements and when these titles/abilities are not directly tied to being able to win, simply recognition for the time put into WvW and making you a better teammate (e.g. carrying more supply, which is already possible), it would hardly be unfair for them to be retroactive. To say that nothing people did before X date doesn’t count is quite a bit silly too.
That’s like saying they add new content for Badges, but it isn’t fair because people already have them or that adding Ascended Accessories for Laurels isn’t fair because people already have those. People could have gotten ascended accessories as soon as they released. Was there a problem with that? I think not. And we’re talking months of gameplay that people put in being thrown away, not a couple weeks of dailies.
In interview he said “new items to spend badges on” I think that’s as retroactive as your going to get. Everything else will start from square one. Much like you I have spent almost all my time in wvw and I will have no problem with this.
Each piece will only be 500000 current badges or 1000 of the new badges.
Appearance options!? Oh you got my attention; does that mean new skins, or will we just see skin sets recycled and cannibalized from other PvE content? Please say it’ll be new and exclusive in appearance because I’d love nothing more than to look awesome for playing WvW.
Chris.50245 hours without a post? What’s going on here?
I miss Maguuma soo much…
We always knew you cared.
I’ll just pretend that I’m a part of this matchup.
DB is full of PvDoor! FA just wipes a lot and throws 5,000,000 bodies on a keep to take it! BT makes a lot of videos about stuff!
Yeah. That felt good.
What I really don’t understand is Dragonband’s NNK guild. I mean, DB is a solid tier 3 server and as such there’s likely never going to be much coverage from any of the other servers in NNK’s time zone. Doesn’t it get boring having nobody at all to fight? Is there something about PVD I’m missing? I guess I’d get it if it made a difference, but score wise it really doesn’t. What’s the deal?
You still have points,
If it was PvDoor and we had “nobody at all to fight” we would be +695,It’s not like we just took 60% of the map and then said “Nah, we’ll stop here for today”.
:)
Forgot one related to WvW:
- Cloak and Dagger: The player can no longer use this ability stack stealth by attacking WvW walls.
World vs. World
- Fixed an issue that allowed NPCs with Righteous Indignation to still take condition damage.
Not cool at all.
World vs. World
- Fixed safety areas that extended too far, which could result in some players keeping their no siege/determined buff.
- Changed the orange swords combat marker to show only if more than 25 people are in combat in the area.
- Fixed a bug with Durios Gulch that could cause guards to spawn on the wrong team.
- Fixed a bug on all Hills Keeps that could cause guards to spawn on the wrong team.
- Fixed an issue that allowed NPCs with Righteous Indignation to still take condition damage.
- Removed the ability to use many karma related items in WvW.
Items
- Food items that give special bonuses upon a critical hit now have an internal cooldown before they can produce the special bonus again.
Skills
- Reduced the number of maximum of stacks of Retaliation allowed to five (was 25). Duration still stacks.
- Using stealth no longer resets NPC aggression tables.
Thief
- Cloak and Dagger: The player can no longer use this ability stack stealth by attacking WvW walls.
Ranger
- Guard: Pets will no longer guard areas that should be inaccessible to them.

No more safe zones in the PK camps will hopefully make a few people happy. Finally the guards get fixed after months of complaints. No more damaging the NPCs with Righteous Indignation any longer. That will make for some interesting changes to how people approach camps now.

I am originally from Isle of Janthir and moved to Fort Aspenwood with pretty much 60/70% of the IoJ w3 hardcore community about 6 – 7 weeks ago.
I played in 3 guilds on IoJ across US and Oceanic time zones. I tried and tried to grow IoJ but it suffered from a lot of issues and dramas like individuals pulling stunts to deceive our community by deliberately growing rapidly as a guild knowing they are transferring off. When the free xfers finishing was announced we had slipped to T3 from 13 weeks straight of T1/2. We had been versing FA for 3 weeks and although we were winning against them ppt wise as our numbers were a lot more than them they were very painful to see in the open field.
They did more with less and I found myself respawning so often due to well organized guilds even though their numbers were a lot smaller then our Zergs.
When I heard that IoJ w3 community was moving due to IoJ being reddits announced PVE server and only a casual w3 server i decided to move as well. I heard the guilds were going to different locations i decided to go to FA, it was the right place to go and left my main guild (who xfered to Kaineng bandwagon) to fly solo on FA.
I could not have made a better decision.
The only reason we want SEA/Euro guilds is so we can have a competitive chance to stay in T2 and so the US day and afternoon crew don’t have to rebuild our entire w3 situation each day which we know will be much hard to do in t2.
We are not asking for SoS & SoR to implode and move to FA so we can have internet glory by beating BG and JQ in T1. We simply find T3 completely and utterly boring. The three servers capable in this tier just can’t match our numbers and even when they do we USUALLY trounce them (I’m sorry if this sounds like chest pumping, it’s not intended to).
Simple fact is most of FA had their first taste of T2 ever and they/we absolutely loved that week. We got taught a ppt lesson by both BG and TC and we learnt and i can tell you we have improved out of sight. We want that experience back, the competition with strong organized guilds to fight that don’t run away unless they are +50% of your numbers and we want to stay there.
So why did I post this diatribe of stuff people don’t care about?
I did so in the hope 50 people who play from 5am US CST to 11am like what they hear and are willing to come add to our awesome community and grow our regulars that play at this time into w3 champions.
We’re a solid server, FA is full of loyal guilds that will never give up on FA, IoJ moved together because we wanted to stay together and we will stay together. FA is here to stay and we hope you can join us in the fight.
No it just means that the entrance to a portal must be on the opposite side of a wall from the exit in order for players to portal past that wall. Used to be you could put both inside and then jump in from the outside without having to create a portal on the outside.
Meanwhile, in the ranger forum!
step 1- role thief and give it a rangery name.
step 2- buy mini pets to travel with you.
step 3- kill stuff with your 20k hit 3 second combo.
step 4- if you have trouble the first time with step 3 then reset the fight with stealth and redo step 3 when ready.
step 5- profit.
seriously though…
i understand things take time to balance out but 7 months in without tackling performance lows and extremes of classes is disappointing. there are tons of issues half a year into live and players are still being confronted with silly mechanics like thief 1 button 7k heartseekers and being killing in seconds while rangers are waiting 5 seconds just for thier pet f2 ability to activate.
hire more people to work on professions and combat because that’s the only way y’all are going to keep the players who are interested in more than just legendaries and playing the tp.
(edited by Swagger.1459)
and we get 85% more damage on a useless weapon to begin with in the off hand. great.
I thought “buffing useless weapons” is exactly what we want, if you know what I mean
But tbh idk what to think about it. I didn’t expect any buffs, honestly. Everything I wanted from balance changes was nerf to some proffs/build that are OP. Seeing how they got buffed… no idea what to say.
I’m going to still play my ranger and it will still be my main. The day I leave ranger, will be day I leave game. I hope it will be because of other reasons than “balance issues”.
^^
We need to have him acknowledge this above quote.
4 months and its not like they made changes but they weren’t enough. THEY HAVEN’T CHANGED A THING! They haven’t even touched them.
If after 4 months, I’d neglected an assigned project from my boss (or in the case of ANet, a promise to my customers), I’d be fired. No questions asked. My butt would be brought in with my advisers giving me one last chance to defend myself and then if I had nothing to show for it, despite any excuses outside of a major personal tragedy, I’d be canned.
There’s understanding and then there’s coddling. I understand that they made some big changes to Necro’s and Guardians. I understand that testing takes time. But part of their job is to handle every class, not just pick and choose which they want to work on at a given time. Everyone has parts of their job they don’t like, but you have to do them.
Don’t get me wrong, I know tone is difficult to read through the internet, but I’m not angry about this. Not in the slightest. I’m just flabbergasted that a lack of results like this is accepted in any line of work. I don’t know who’s responsible for overseeing the live team responsible for class balance and design but they need to light a fire under some kitten or barring that they need to address this somehow.
“One problem with rangers is the lack of build diversity created by a number of sub par utility skills. Many signets, a shout or two, and spirits are all a bit lackluster. That is the first place to expect improvements. Second is trying to improve the feel/ pacing on some weapons.”
Ok I can’t type more with tiny phone finger keypad. See you in game!
Jon
ok so 4 months ago
1.many sub par utility skils
2.sub par signits
3. sub par shouts
4. spirits are lackluster
5. pacing on weapons need to be improved
6. lack of build diversity
today
1.utility skills are still sub par when compared to similar skills of other professions example lightning reflex compared to roll for initiative.
2.speed signit is the only worth while improvement here, however every ones speed signits got buffed.
3.shouts are still sub par.
4. spirits are still very bad.
5.many of the weapons still have bad pacing and don’t feel right.
6. still really only 2 builds to chose from and the emp bond nerf hurt both of those.
with all that said i would like to say thank you so much for all your hard work on the class you admitted needing a lot of work.
(edited by Majik.8521)
I just feel lied to at this point. Rangers were promised fixes back in November and we’ve gotten nothing of note what-so-ever. Guardians and Elementalists, two classes that were essentially fine if not overtuned got twice the attention Rangers did.
At this point, I’m not even questioning understaffing or a lack of knowledge on the issues. At this point, the only explanation is that Jon’s “balance team” spends most of their day sitting on Reddit at work instead of doing their jobs. Their old NCSoft brethren at Paragon Studios overhauled entire classes in 4 month time periods while Rangers still have entirely messed up trait lines (1 second bleeds, 1 second might?!) and not even an acknowledgement of the true problems.
Whats going on?
1. They are flat out incompetent. Their kitten random tweaks don’t deny this.
2. They just don’t give a kitten. Lack of any attention to still glaring faults in the game. We already paid our ~$60. What do they care if we stick around.
3. They are kitten from being beaten by a Ranger/s during the beta and still haven’t gotten over it. Nothing to support this directly, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all given that we were actually good and then got Smiter’s Boon‘d something fierce and haven’t received any love since.
Just take the ranger out of the game already… Obviously the person working on the ranger class had a bad experience with a “ranger” type class on a different MMO, and is now eternally kitten off at our class and wants to see us die.
Patch notes are out, sadly
Ranger
- Guard: Pets will no longer guard areas that should be inaccessible to them.
- Crippling Talon: Cooldown of this ability has been reduced from 18 seconds to 15 seconds.
- Empathic Bond: Fixed a bug that wouldn’t apply transferred conditions to pets. This trait now transfers three conditions to the ranger’s pet every 10 seconds rather than all of them.
- Hawk and Eagle now have their own unique icons instead of sharing one.
- Path of Scars: This ability’s damage has been normalized between traited and non-traited versions. Damage has been increased by 85% when not traited.
- Icy Screech: The White Moa activated ability now applies 3 seconds of Chill, and the skill fact has been updated appropriately.
What disturbs me is that out of the 1100+ posts in Jon Peter’s own thread, which was viewed over 140 thousand times, only two of those posts are his.
Come on guys, get your communication act together! You can do it!
- Fix pet F2 responsiveness.
- Fix pet AoE survivability.
- Fix pet AI so that they don’t run off to random, far-away targets.
- Explain the 40ms shortbow nerf and why each shortbow#1 attack is a lot longer than 40ms.
- Adjust dps on longbow so that other longbow classes can stop laughing at us.
- Explain why BM traits are scattered everywhere instead of the BM tree.
- Fix ‘obstructed’ error with bows.
- Regardless of ETAs, can you please tell us that you acknowledge these problems? Everybody understands you can’t fix things with the wave of a wand, but it would mean a lot to everyone if they knew you were aware of these problems. Not saying anything only leaves us to assume that the developers don’t agree with our suggestions – and that’s OK. Just give us confirmation/closure and we’ll stop nagging. Is that enough for you?
Why in the world would this posting, which is full of truth – be marked as “infracted”?
I have dozens and dozens of screenshots to attest to much of the above – too bad the devs just don’t want to look at them…
Because you are not allowed to address the Master… erm i mean developers directly. Dare you demand anything from them or make any sense whatsoever that shows their failure. They will strike you down with vengeance, kill your first-born and ravage your women.
