You do know that this would require a complete reworking of the system they use to cull objects and players.. further exasperating the issue with players not popping in.

No, it wouldn’t, right now you can set a pretty high FOV with 3 monitors (horizontal ), stretching the window (horizontal), or using a 3rd party tool (vertical/horizontal) which I won’t use because I’m poor right now and can’t afford to risk losing my account.

No reworking required whatsoever.

That’s not really a legit FOV though. That’s just expanding the view on either side.

Ohhh my kittening god………………………………………..

Can the people who are unable to grasp the simple concept of FOV just stop posting their ignorant opinion on the subject?

Dude, just please, go and watch the 2 videos I posted above, and educate yourself.
Just to play devil’s advocate a sec, Jon’s point about increasing FoV during full screen play distorting textures would be true
It would be true if you set a fov of 110 when you have a little 15 inch monitor.

However in other games I set the fov to 90 or 95 with no distortion. If I set it to 100 it doesn’t distort it, but 110+ starts distorting. But I a smaller than average monitor and resolution. People with bigger monitors and resolutions would be able to play at a pretty high FOV before textures start appearing distorted.

(sorry, because brevity is not my forte. there was a character limit)

There is a a serious camera problem, however, which is making some players nauseous. We believe a large number of these cases are not FOV related but rather due to bugs in camera smoothing. Because of this we are expediting a quick fix to this issue that is currently in testing and should see the light of day in the next build we do.

The issue is not the camera, that is what I thought in many games. How do you explain that I can play them without getting sick when I change the FOV?

How about you stop asserting things for your players? How about you stop putting words in the mouths of your players?
What you are doing is when you go to the doctor for something that’s hurting your life and the doctor just waves it off saying “oh, you’re just depressed” or “just exercise more”. And then the health issue becomes too serious, causing permanent consequences, because the doctor refused to help you when the issue was still reversible. (OK, players can just stop playing the game, but you’re waving off the problem like we are insignificant ants)

Do you know how I learned about FOV? I wasn’t able to play PC games, every game I wanted to play seriously made me sick in a few minutes.
In GW1 because I liked it so much, I closed my eyes most of the game (so much for your pretty art, when I have to close my eyes or look away to play it). I came to GW2 to follow my friends. I do the same now, close my eyes or look away as I play it.

This prevents me from playing PvP as much as I’d like, because having to close my eyes or look away is not a good thing when the battle could change in a split second.

In GW1 there was a lot of zoom-out so that helped me not get so sick (no, I’m not asking for more zoom in gw2).

How did I learn about FOV? I heard it being discussed here during beta. I read more information about it, I watched videos, looked at a list of games that let you change it, bought those games I hadn’t been able to play before, and gave them another try.

So first I try to play them without changing FOV (some first person, some third person, with default 75 FOV). Eek, I get sick just like before!

But then I change the FOV.

It worked! With a FOV of 95 I can play! I can play PC FPS games, RPG games! Can you imagine how happy I was? When my friends played a new game, all I could do is sigh and say “have fun”, I couldn’t buy that game because I wouldn’t be able to play it without getting sick real quick.

Now with those games where I can change FOV, I don’t have to limit myself to strategy games anymore (old 2D games).

The issue is not the camera, that is what I thought in many games. How do you explain that I can play them without getting sick when I change the FOV?

Sure, this game’s camera can be a bit awkward sometimes but it’s not a big issue as the FOV.
I have my camera smoothing set to max and I’ve adjusted my mouse sentitivity. I can barely feel the smoothing at all. I hope you’re not intending on “fixing” this and screwing it up more like you have everything else so far. The words “quick fix” are worrying me a lot for some reason. Perhaps you should forget about it for now and fix other parts of the game

So I was watching that video comparing the FOV of 100 to 75. I must be the odd one here but the fish eye distortion from the 100 FoV was actually making me dizzy and nauseous and not the FoV 75.

Thats because you are watching a video dude. When you are actually playing the game, the fish eye parts are left in your peripheral vision, just like in the REAL WORLD you have a fish eye even though you don’t perceive as such.

Also, 100 FOV is a bit much, a good FoV should be around 90-95.

There are plenty of videos on the net here are 2 good ones.

This is why I love having 3 monitors. Please don’t allow people to change their FoV Jon Peters, I love having the distinct advantage of seeing far to my left and right in PvP. Its almost like i’m cheating. But i’m not, i’m just rich and can afford 3 monitors.

These single-monitor plebeians are wondering where i’m shooting them from while they’re looking through their cardboard-tube-like FoV.

As most people have pointed out, your reasoning is terrible Jon.

1) So? If we want to tradeoff performance for FOV that is our right.

2) Are you serious? I’ve played a LOT of PC games at 90 FOV and I almost never notice any kind of issue with textures or LOD. These things usually don’t become apparent unless you go higher than 90. I have tried the windowed trick to get the screen wider, and it has no effect on the art.

3) This is bullkitten. So people with eyefinity setups or whatever, they can get an advantage. But not all us with single widescreen monitors.

If the problem is that due to the game engine it is hard to implement a FOV slider, that is one thing. But there is NO reason not to do it based on gameplay or art.

ANet. You’ve built a breathtakingly beautiful world. And you’ve given us a narrow FOV and a camera that’s about 2 feet off the ground and makes it very hard to look up. You need to change these things. I don’t know if you’re taking this issue seriously enough. Saying “oh, but WoW has a FOV of 75” is not an excuse.

@ JonPeters

Simply put, you just have to give us the option to change FOV, make it an “advanced users” thing with bright red letters, where we must agree to a pop-up saying:

“Changing your FOV might reduce your computer’s performance. This option is completely unsupported by ArenaNet. Use this at your own risk.
Are you sure you want to enable user-adjusted FOV?”
(checkbox) I have read this message and understand the risks.
(Cancel) (Yes)
When we have changed it, put a button (Reset to default).

No one is asking to make a FOV of 95 mandatory for all players. We just want the option to change it so we don’t get sick.
Most people won’t even realize the option is there.

I’ve seen a lot of topics on this both here and externally so let me try and address it. The current FOV is going to stay because increasing it, while having some benefits for some players, has too many drawbacks.

1) performance suffers greatly because of how things are built and view distances

2) art suffers because of texture tiling, LOD problems and just general stretching from the fisheye effect.

3) gameplay suffers because positional awareness becomes less necessary in a game where combat is greatly designed around positioning.

There is a a serious camera problem, however, which is making some players nauseous. We believe a large number of these cases are not FOV related but rather due to bugs in camera smoothing. Because of this we are expediting a quick fix to this issue that is currently in testing and should see the light of day in the next build we do.

Jon

I’m not one of the haters around these forums that preach doom and gloom all over.
And I am someone who constantly defends GW2 and ANET.
But honestly, I find those EXCUSES to be pathetic, and just inconsistent!

1) performance suffers greatly because of how things are built and view distances

SO WHAT?
What business is it of yours? You know what else makes the performance suffer? Just about every single option in the graphics section of setting! Why not just make the lowest option as default then?

This is a weak kitten excuse. People with high end hardware can already run the game on 80+FPS, the few FPS lost wouldn’t matter much.

Also, those people that get motion sick from the FOV are those people who will QUIT GW2, so telling them that they will get less FPS in a game they are not going to play because they get motion sick is just stupid.

2) art suffers because of texture tiling, LOD problems and just general stretching from the fisheye effect.

OHHH COME ON! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
The distortion that the game will get from a higher FOV will not be noticed by the actual player! Because that distortion will stay in their peripheral vision! There is NO WAY that you dont know that! This is just blatant in-your-face BS.

3) gameplay suffers because positional awareness becomes less necessary in a game where combat is greatly designed around positioning.

REALLY?
They why do you allow a much higher FOV for those with 3 monitors? So according to you, the people with 3 monitors get a substantial advantage over those with just one?
Why is ANET allowing that?

I’m sorry but these are the worst excuse I have seen yet!

Ohhh and FYI, we do NOT want a new default FOV added and enforced on everyone! We want a FOV slider that will allow people to adjust the FOV to own liking.

This is not an FPS game, the advantage of a higher FOV is not going to be game breaking in any way what so ever, please stop pretending like it will.

Jon, your points about artistic integrity and performance are condescendingly transparent at best if not outright disingenuous.

A quick look at some video on Youtube of GW2 played with a wider FoV (provided in-game during some large boss fights, by window-stretching or even by 3rd party tools) shows quite clearly that the the art of the game does not suffer a bit from a slightly wider FoV. And as many have pointed out here, performance issues are dependent on the hardware of the user, and the game already has numerous options for dealing with that.

Your last post implies it is a massive undertaking to alter the FoV of the game. Why, then, is a 3rd-party tool written by one or two talented amateurs able to do it without any of the negative effects you are talking about? Sure, you have to run changes through QA and the amateurs do not, but is it really so onerous a task that you can justify alienating a portion of your player base because of it?

I think it’s fine. It’s fair for everyone.

There are a lot of other things I’d rather see them working on before considering this.

No, it’s not, and having a slider would make it MORE fair. Right now people with triple monitor setups do not have to deal with low FOV like the rest of us.

It’s not okay, it’s not “fair” by any stretch of the imagination for ONLY people with $1000 monitor setup to be able to play the game with an acceptable FOV.

Can we get a statement on the 'field of view' issue?

What do you think about adding a ladders in WvsWvsW? It could increase tactical options of battles. For example one large group focus defenders on gates, meanwhile small pack of attackers build couple of ladders, so invaders can break into a castle from other side and attack defenders?

Would be nice if u can TAME YOUR OWN MOUNT over the world of course with certain rules like:

-not everything is a mount…
-only animals… (NO Flying at leats for the moment…)
-Hability for TAME a beast *
-you can only use 1 mount at time
-no more than 5 mount per person
-
Not all the mount have the same speed (that is a good point)
-
U have to train the hability* (that means only who train the hability can get a top high speed mount or something like that…)
-Map Zones that u only can travel with mount because for some reason the asura gates doesnt works
-Rare mount in shop (but u still need to train the hability for use it)
-Not used for combats only for explore and travel

THAT MAKE THE MOUNT SIYSTEM DIFERENT TO OTHERS GAMES

What can i say… im an adventurer i like to ride and travel over the world explore and kill beast for pleasure learning about the zones… portal make me lazy sometimes. Thats somethink that i think and should work in this cool awesome ultra amazing game! Hope u like my idea guys

no mounts, with time everyone will find an easier to farm and gain money like its nothing and WP costs will seem like nothing, so in the end:

NEIN!!!

Ok, so why shouldn’t mounts be added for cosmetic/collectible purposes? If your thoughts are that mounts would provide too much mobility, then why shouldn’t mounts with no bonuses to movement speed be added purely for aesthetic purposes? Be a bit more constructive with your feedback please. We’ve already seen enough posts of people saying “NO” and providing no reason whatsoever.

What about mounts to bypass content. I think that would become a concern. GW2 has many areas that have large concentrations of mobs, right now you’re somewhat forced to deal with them if you’re trying to get somewhere. Mounts would serve to trivialize that danger.

Most games handle this by forcing you off your mount if you get hit.

The bypassing content argument doesn’t fly with me. All the waypoints are a bit more ridiculous in my mind with regards to bypassing content. Even if you have to find them first, you only need to find them once and then you can bounce around anywhere instantly? Waypoints severely break up the flow of exploration.

Mounts would be far better than waypoints. You should have one recall stone that brings you to your major city, portals, and mounts. Nix the waypoints I say.

Agreed. It’s amusing that people try to argue against the inclusion of mounts on the grounds of “trivialising content” when that is precisely what the waypoint system does. So essentially, they are for the waypoint system because it’s already in the game, but against mounts because they are not.

Forgot about this gem from last week. I’d like to point out that I am not actually arguing against their inclusion as it’s something that’s mostly out of my control anyway, if it happens it happens. However, I did ask a perfectly legitimate question, if the concept is as sound as you pretend it to be it should be able to stand up to any scrutiny. But there’s some flaws in both of your arguments, more so in the latter.

Firstly, waypoints do not exist on every square inch of the game, you do not waypoint into the midst of whatever location you’re trying to get to all of the time, you’re waypointing near to it and then running the remaining distance. You are essentially waypointing to any distance in and around the waypoint up to whatever half the distance is to the next one. You still have to travel, so no waypoints and mounts are not the same thing in terms of bypassing content.

If you’ve noticed in GW2, you do not enter combat until you attack the enemy or they incapacitate/cripple you in some way. You remain at full sprint until then, as for “other games” this holds true for how their mounts generally work, of course I refer to WoW’s mounts as it is the most recognizable version I’m sure. Unless you are dazed, rooted, crippled or engage combat on your own, you remain mounted. This allows you to run through with near impunity, any mobs that you come across before you get to or near your destination. How is that not bypassing content?

If we go with the first suggestion that “when you get hit you’re dismounted,” you’re going to have a pretty awful time riding through somewhere like Orr. Unless the caveat to that is “dismount when you get hit and reduce the density of mobs in zones to accomodate mount travel.” In which case you’re again, trivializing content. The second caveat to this is “mounts are purely cosmetic.” Which, from reading most of the other comments advocating their inclusion is not the intention, but for mounts to be faster than normal sprint speed.

As a supporter of mounts i have followed this discussion since GW1. During the development stages of GW2 I have worked out various mount systems as suggestions on guru. And at the first signs of the GW2-beta i have suggested atleast ‘testing’ mounts for GW2 on the wiki.

From all the discussions i can only conclude one thing, the people against mounts have yet to come up with an argument that isn’t easily refuted or worked around in the actual mount system. I could put a whole list here, but i don’t feel like doing so atm. If people won’t take my word for it, then i will supply the list at some other point in time…

I don’t realy care how mounts are added to the game at this point in time, it seems that even amoungst those that favor mounts there is a large devide in how these mounts should be added. So in the end i think it should be upto ArenaNet and how they would like to implement mounts… I mainly just want to own and ride a Dolyak !

We are peace, we are war. We are how we treat each other and nothing more…

Mount mentality
“Oh look a downed player, nvm If I’ll ress him, I’ve to waste 3 sec to remount. So I just leave him there”

This is exactly what will happen, Period.

Whilst that is certainly possible, what is equally possible is:

“Oh look a downed player in the middle of a load of mobs. If I die whilst trying to rescue them then I’ll have to run all the way back to here ON FOOT (because mounts aren’t allowed) because the nearest waypoint is actually quite a distance.

So, I just leave him there."

The point here is that a mount could actually be beneficial to the situation you are describing, because a player with a mount is perhaps being less inconvenienced if they died, then if they didn’t own one and was just running around on foot.

And because they own a mount, they may not use the WP system as much, leaving them with more money to pay for things like repairs, buying gems, buying stuff from the Trade Post, etc, etc. Maybe even a new mount.

Thus a player owning and using a mount MAY actually be more inclined to get involved in more “riskier” situations which they would otherwise bypass due to the costs incurred by such things as repairs and WP travel after death.

I loved guild wars 1 and played it for around five years and do not see any problem with mounts. A. Lots of video game franchises have lacked certain animals up until a certain point. For instance The Elder Scrolls. Its not lore breaking. B. Way-points are lackluster and boring. C. Mounts would allow you to see the world and make it to dynamic events faster. D. Just because something is not needed does not mean it shouldn’t be added I don’t know anyone here who “Needs” to play GW2.

I also succeed to the point this is not pressing matter. But it would be nice to have. So maybe they could work on it down the road. If they do implement it I have some Ideas that could help with different issues. In order of importance.

1. Mounts can not be summoned in major cities.
2. No flying mounts. Unless you have special areas for Arial game-play which could be fun.
3. Mounts freak out when you pull aggro from enemies forcing you to dismount. Maybe even throwing you off if you take to long. Unless you introduce combat mounts which will always charge trowed enemies that you have aggro on if you attempt to flee.
4. Mounts only give around a 33-50 speed boost. No need to make them too fast.
5. No over-sized or gaudy mounts. Just horses and other animals that make sense in GW Lore like Dolyaks.
6. Mounts run up from behind the player when summoned and run off-screen when dismissed. (I just thought that was cool but its really not necessary)

Tarka, yes, we get the idea. You’d really, really like mounts. Spam replying to every post in this thread does not strengthen your argument. Anet have already said, on more than one occasion, that they’ve no intention of introducing mounts. The vast majority of players seem to be perfectly happy with this. It doesn’t stop one of these threads starting up every few days…

Please can you provide a link to the Anet post where they said “that they’ve no intention of introducing mounts.”? If of course the ambiguity in your statement suggests that they have no intention of EVER adding land based mounts to the game.

I believe what they ACTUALLY said was that they have no intention of adding them *at the moment, but haven’t completely ruled it out for the future.* (meaning not in at launch).

As for the “the majority of players seem happy” statement, I do believe that you are jumping to conclusions based on the amount of people discussing this particular subject on the forums. Which, if this is truely the case, is a flawed foundation for your argument.

As for me “spamming”. I replied to a few different people on one day. That is not spamming.
