Level 80 Sylvari Mesmer – Castiel Kyros (Main)
Level 80 Sylvari Ranger – Castiel Gaanmyr (Alt)
No a Wyld Hunt is a special task given to a specific newborn in the Dream prior to their awakening. Not all Sylvari have Wyld Hunts which is what makes those(ie. Valiants – Sylvari who have Wyld Hunts) Sylvari that do special in the Pale Tree’s eyes.
I am Sylvari, I am a protector of the land, of Tyria and though in truth I have been tempted by the Nightmare I will not abandon Mother, the Grove or Ventari’s teachings. At times my Wyld Hunt has left me feeling as if I had no freedom to chose my own path but then I remember that through my Dream and my Wyld Hunt I have been tasked with an honorable task to protect that which I hold dearest to my heart.
Though the Nightmare maybe free from the same charges as my self or other Valiant’s have I can not condone their actions, their thirst for blood. They want to force all Sylvari to conform to them, this is not true freedom. They want to harm mother, the Grove and all Sylvari who do not conform to their will…I will not allow it.
I, Castiel Kyros, am of the Pale Tree and I will destroy the Nightmare just as I will defeat the Elder Dragons to protect Mother, the Grove and all of Tyria from their evil.
LOL well from an MMO standpoint Its much easier to refer to all Sylvari players as Valiant since story mode/pve is mainly a single player experience and therefore 1 person ie. the Sylvari that awoke and shared the same dream as Caithe is the only one who will defeat the dragon. So instead of calling each and every player by the name they chose in character creation its easier for programers to jus have her refer to us by one name since from a story standpoint we are all the same because Zhaitan is only going to be defeated by the Valiant, Caithe + Destiny’s Edge once.
Also the Pale Tree loves all her “children” but she nurtures those with Wlyd hunts more than the others because they have special tasks they need to complete to protect Tyria and therefore are more worthy of her constant attention, ie. the first borns and us the Valiant who helps Caithe(a firstborn) complete her Wyld Hunt when we kill Zhaitan.
Mesmer portal reminds me of being a monk in GW1. Every success or failure is entirely your fault…
… I run a lot of cof, I feel your pain
However, I will say I was in a CoF group earlier today with 3 mesmers, thief and warrior… I’d NEVER seen the effigy go down so quickly thanks to multiple feedback bubbles and timewarp…
Because warriors are not the best dps class. Theves and ele are better but most people do not know how to play them effectively which leads to warriors being a safer bet. Most mesmer are pretty bad at playing
@SlimGenre that’s cuz feedback and timewarp are awesome-sauce espcially if u got 3 mesmers in the group xD
@loseridiot LOL most thieves in dungeon runs are bad and uber squishy but its not the classes fault its the player, same goes for ele…i cant count the number of times ive seen an ele who stays stuck in fire or earth atunement…like really? havent seen too many bad mesmers in dungeon runs though, not that they dont exist, i guess ive been lucky but i kinda think its because most bad mesmer players give up on the class about mid way through lvling it.
Im pretty sure the Sylvari don’t even understand the concept of incest or inbreeding.
That’s not the point I’m making.
They do not practice inbreeding as they are asexual beings and they do not practice incest because they are not biological siblings but from our perspective (and from the other mammalian races’) it most certainly comes off as incestuous.
I guess that’s the problem you get with having a race of living plants.
Oh, my bad I misinterpreted your previous post. I read it as because they do this they seemingly practice it with out knowing it…oops
Anywho…based on our lovely devs response I feel it should and does in fact apply to all the other races as they are mammalian and humanoid, even the asura and char as they are both bipedal and share human like qualities, and I would assume that at least the asura would realize this much faster than the other races if eyebrows were ever to be raised on the topic.
Im pretty sure the Sylvari don’t even understand the concept of incest or inbreeding.
Sylvari Male Mesmer: Castiel Kyros named him for the reason qutoed below from when i posted on the sylvari name rating thread xD
I went with Castiel Kyros for my mesmer to keep with the 2 consecutive vowel rule and Castiel is an angle’s name which I figured would be fitting for a sylvari since their existence seems to be to be to watch over Tyria and protect it from the elder dragons corruption.
Gotta love getting dev responses <3 Thanks for clearing that up =P
Wha? Sylvari having a humanoid appearance is their true form. It has nothing to do with whether or not tree seed is planted on a human grave or not. Does no one read the lore before they start to discuss lore related topics? Malyck’s appearance is proof of this.
As for Malyck, we know that he IS NOT a remnant of the last dragon awakening because he tells us, Caithe and Traeherne that he was born two weeks prior to his encounter with us. In regards to why his tree does not have a “Dream” or why his people don’t share the same mental/psychic link thing with each other and their tree like we do the main theory thats been poping up is that it has to do with his tree not being influenced by the Ventari tablet.
My theory as to why we have a “Dream” and Malyck’s people don’t is because the trees are intended to absorb knowledge from their surroundings and then formulate the “Dream” connection we have in order to pass that knowledge on to its spawn so they are born ready to take on the world with knowledge and experience hard wired into them since Sylvari are born fully grown in an adult form. Our tree, and therefore its spawn, meaning us, are more knowledgeable, connected and better prepared to face the challenges of the new world we are awakening in because our tree had the Ventari Tablet to learn from as well as Ronan but Malyck’s tree most likely grew in an unpopulated area. By that I mean where ever his tree is at does not have any civilizations near by to learn from and therefore it could not generate a dream for its spawn since it did not absorb any knowledge from other cultures.
9/10 for Siofra. Only loses a point because non-phonetic pronunciations make me cranky. I wish everyone could agree to just use this alphabet to do the same things.
So you want everyone to use only english pronounciations and spellings for your ease?? Is this an english-only game? What about all those non english natives wanting to use their own language as inspiration for names? Or all us multi linguists wanting to get our inspiration from anywhere we can? Síofra maybe non-english-phonetic but its probably quite normal irish-phonetic.
Yeeesh lil harsh much? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so whether or not we all believe its correct/incorrect doesn’t matter. Not defending that persons opinion just sayin its a “Rate this name” thread and that person provided their reason for the rating they gave, a rather high one I might add since its a near perfect rating, just try to not let it bother you. If you are willing to post your name and have someone rate it you must be open to criticism. Let’s not turn this into a flame war thread please? Let’s keep it civil. Ok end rant =P have a good day everyone and lets get some more names rated xD
Next one to be rated is Cyberdwarf Babyarm so who ever posts their name next please rate LordSlack’s sylvari name in your post
Yes supposedly there are multiple pale trees in the world as the lore states that Ronan took the seed that grew into the pale tree that spawned us he acquired it from within a cave containing many other seeds just like it and guarded my strange ferocious creatures. This is also why some have theorized that the pale tree maybe a champion/ extension of some unknown nature themed elder dragon due to how we spawn and our collective knowledge/hive mind/mental connection to all other sylvari through the dream and that we are the only race in Tyria immune to dragon corruption(one of the key points in the theory as each dragons minions are immune to the corruption of other dragons ie. zhaitan cannot corrupt one of jormags dead minions).
I for one find it to be an extremely interesting theory and cant wait to see how the lore unfolds for my favorite race in Tyria. Sylvari for life =P
If you are interested in the lore and the theory I mentioned heres a vid link you should check out as it sheds more light on the theory I mentioned. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWtFf7UbtAQ
Lol really? You deleted a toon cuz they altered the way she sounded when she was in pain? No offense but thats jus plain odd/weird. So what? Honestly never noticed any odds sounds with my sylvari and all my toons are sylvari as they are my fav race, granted I play males since I am male and feel very weird playing a female…personal preference, sylvari are a very unique race and they are by no means just “humans dressed as trees”.
Oh and btw you can’t “nerf” a sound…completely wrong usage of the term…jus saying
7/10 rolls off the tongue well and has a nature theme to it =P
I went with Castiel Kyros for my mesmer to keep with the 2 consecutive vowel rule and Castiel is an angle’s name which I figured would be fitting for a sylvari since their existence seems to be to be to watch over Tyria and protect it from the elder dragons corruption.
Well, not necessarily, I mean on other classes that doesn’t work (and obviously with the Necro you have to use other abilities as they become available too), I was just using the Necro as a comparison and showing why they were much more effective at dropping tons of AoE conditions when compared to my Mesmer, and considering that Necros are probably the closest class to Mesmers (given that they are cloth, have lots of condition damage, and use disposable “pets.”).
Actually you can do that, especially with the more “simple” straight forward classes such as a warrior. Yes necros have pets but they are not the same. Minions are less disposable than clones for one. Also from the time I spent on a necro(to be fair I only got it to around 45 before deleting it so I havent had any lvl 80 necro experience yet) they were extremely clunky to me, slower at killing things than my mesmer, and none of the weapon sets felt right, but hey thats y I don’t play em we all got a class that just “fits” and necro didnt do it for me even though they are pretty cool and nice to have in a party.
I don’t have Deceptive Evasion traited at the moment, but since I only just hit 40 anyways it was completely unavailable to this point. If it’s vital to the class then it probably should have been available much earlier.
Well then you should get right on it =P As for whether or not its vital…eh that’s debatable. You don’t necessarily need it but you will be hard pressed to find a mesmer that does not run Deceptive Evasion in their build. It greatly increases clone generation especially when paired with utilities such as Mirror Images and Decoy.
But the problem with Shatters is that it kills all Clones and Phantasms, and Phantasms are much harder to replace. If you have a very Shatter-focused build that treats them as disposable then fair enough, but even in that build it takes time to queue up the three illusions, kill them off, and then you’re left alone and have to rebuild them while all the remaining enemies turn to target you (meaning you might want to wait until their cooldowns are up). The “burst” of a shatter is “instantaneous,” but only after you’ve spent several seconds setting up the conditions for it. It would be far better of you could A. launch only one or two illusions rather than all of them, or B. if you could queue up clones before battle, like Necro pets.
Again that boils down to the build you are using, whether or not you are running Deceptive Evasion and what utilities you are running. From what you are saying you arent playing the mesmer right if you want more clones at your disposal. We can generate clones like crazy.
As for shatters killing all clones and phants that comes down to how well you micro manage your clones shatters wont kill your phants if you dont blunder cast a phant right before you pop a shatter its that simple. Clone management is a big element of mesmer play. Generating clones for shatters as well as using shatters is very fast if you know what you are doing. Not trying to beat ya up just saying if you want to stick with the mesmer you will have to put some serious time into figuring them out. Thats why mesmers are considered a top tier class, because of the skill required to play them well.
All I’m saying is that they don’t seem to work well “out of the box,” and the specialized knowledge that makes them playable is not well explained to the players. A good class just works, you throw them at the enemy, use the abilities as listed, and do a decent job of it. Of course there should be “secret” builds that require a lot of clever tricks to get a marginal boost in performance, but they should be a lot less hassle right from the start. The other problem that I had is that they still seem to have more momentum than any other class in the game, taking far longer to get going than other classes.
Then play a warrior…mesmers are intended to be a complex class if you want a cookie cutter class where you dont have to do any thinking to play them well the mesmer isn’t right for you.
And for the record, I can’t imagine Mesmers as being “one of the easiest classes to level” for anyone.
Not to beat a dead horse but again it comes down to how you play em, plain and simple. leveling my mesmer was the easiest and most fun I’ve had leveling a new toon and it was cheap too. I was able to play up to about lvl 60 or so only upgrading my gear every 10-15 levels no problem but when I started running dungs I made sure to have level appropriate gear. Anyways spiel all done just remember if you wanna be good with the mesmer it has a much higher learning curve than other classes but its very rewarding when you get the play style down.
Im sorry, but you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. And how can you talk about “damage cycles” (wtf!) without talking about specific builds.
Sorry, I’m by no means claiming any expertise on the Mesmer, this is just my own experience. I’m currently running staff – Specter/Focus, but mostly just the staff in combat. Traits seemed kind of pointless up to 40 (aside from the five points in the bottom one), I’ll see how the post-40 ones work out.
By “damage cycles” I just mean that Mesmers seem to do practically no instantaneous damage (especially with staff, which I acknowledge), and are almost entirely based on building up clone artillery barrages, maybe shattering them if that’s your thing, but in any case it takes time to stack up. They are like condition^2 builds. Like a standard power/precision type class would deal 100% damage over the course of a fight like 25-20-10-15-15-15, and a more standard condition class like a Thief or Necro might do it more like 15-10-10-20-20-25, my Mesmer seems to be more like 5-5-10-20-30-30, almost nothing up front, and then a ton at the back end of their life bar. And that’s if everything is going smoothly. If clones start dying prematurely then that can go a bit pear-shaped. I’m not saying that “Mesmers suck,” I’m just saying that having played every class a decent amount, the Mesmer is the most frustrating and annoying of the bunch so far. If it is a “LTP” issue, then it’s more of a “Learn to teach” problem on the dev’s end.
I am curious to know how best to use abilities against large packs though, since most of their abilities seem single target, maybe with a bounce, with a couple of AoE attacks to work with, and you can only assign three clones at a time, and if the guy you assign them to dies, then they just up and vanish on you. Compare that to my Necro, where I can roll up on ten guys and just Grasping Dead, Enfeebling Blood, Epidemic, Deathly Swarm, Blood is Power, and then just spam auto as all of their life bars plummet simultaneously, and then if I’m in any danger I can use Death Shroud or Spectral Walk to avoid them until my abilities come back up, and that’s without even pulling out the staff in my back pocket.
See, thats your issue right there. you like to drop condi dmg on something and auto till it dies. Mesmers are immensely more active than that. If your lvl 40 on your mesmer and dnt have deceptive evasion traited and are complaining about clone generation being too slow then you clearly havent put the time into learning the class. Our shatters give us amazing aoe and condition damage. Granted confusion is somewhat broken in pve since it does not proc as often as it should(its amazing in pvp tho).
Im prolly going to catch some flack for saying this from other mesmers who like the staff but imo the staff is garbage if your looking for dps auto is too slow and the damage isnt as high as it should be considering the slow attack speed. However the staff is a great if youre looking for a defensive weapon. Id recommend GS + Sword/Pistol or Focus if you want to kill stuff faster. The mesmer is one of the easiest classes to level and its major fun if you know how to play it correctly. You just need to learn how to use a mesmer correctly. Its not the devs responsibility to teach you how to play the game that task falls to you, the player.
Not sure why you think that we dont do instantaneous damage considering ALL the ways we can and do do just that.
Well, in the swamp fractal you should know to be using portal and marking your portal with a waypoint on the minimap. (Alt + Click) Your response to someone telling you to do it should be “I’m already on it. Here’s how it’s gonna go….”
Take charge. Portal is the most efficient means to doing the swamp fractal. Why would you not use it?
(Also, if they don’t want to use portal you should probably just leave. Chances are they’re going to drive you to a rage quit later with other inefficient and silly tactics.)
^this exactly
You can either port the farthest 2 and let the close one run or try for a mid point port for all 3 but Im not to fond of that for the reasons OP brought up. People seem to fail more when they all have to run to a central point for a port instead of you bringing the port to them…lazy much. Or my favorite is run with a mesmer friend and use you port for u xD You guys take the hard ones and let some scub take the easy one and its like poof 2 dwn jus gotta wait for the close one to run in and then boss fight.
When ever my mesmer buddy and I run the swamp we are done on our first attempt and in just a few minutes.
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet and if it has sorry but I feel its something worth mentioning again.
We are allowed to preview what armor or weapons will look like on our characters before we buy them from NPCs or from our inventory bags prior to equipping soulbound/account bound on use items as well as preview found/purchased dyes in our inventory before attaching them to a certain character but no such luck when browsing the Trading post.
We should be able to preview what an item/dye looks like on our character prior to purchasing it on the trading post and for the life of me I can not understand why we haven’t had that ability since day one. It’s like walking into a clothing store with your eyes closed and randomly pointing at items you’d like to buy without first trying them on.
What’s everyone else’s thoughts on this?
So got lucky when testing this build out in the mists and ended up in a 1v1 match with a ranger. Score! Lol.
Anyways, I gotta agree with the others who have said that this build feels clunky but I will differ in that I believe it does have some potential and that it only feels clunky because you need A LOT of practice with it.
My 1st bout with the ranger was horrible, I got out right spanked, but during that 1st fight I slowly began to get a feel for the way I was supposed to string combos together. This lead to a very close 2nd fight with me winning a downed state battle(those are always so funny and yet so hectic) and then the 3rd and 4th I completely owned him. So much so that he seemed to rage quit the match after his 3rd loss in a row
Unfortunately I haven’t had the time/opportunity to test it against other classes or builds besides the ranger(he mainly was using sword/dagger and traps) but for now I’m very intrigued by this build. I will have to say from my current experience with this build I don’t see much potential for it in anything other than 1v1 scenarios but that may just be a issue of lack of experience with the build.
Fay is right though, its great fun to be able to beat someone with this build since it is rather unconventional in the eyes of most players(even other mesmers) and players are definitely not expecting it. Keep up the good work Fay and I’ll keep practicing xD Hopefully some time later tonight I’ll get to test it out in a 2v1 scenario and let you know how it felt.
very interesting build Fay, I’m eager to try it out xD
This thread made me both laugh and get a lil sad since I used to play Allods and I had a Psi as well lol. It was a shame to see what they did to them in that game and I hope my beloved mesmer doesn’t get the same treatment. Mainly because I’ve played all the other classes(well except for guardian and warrior but thats just personal preference as those class types don’t fit my play style) and the mesmer is the only class that has everything I want. If they kill the mesmer I’ll prolly end up quitting instead of sticking around on a class I don’t enjoy playing as much. So please don’t kill the mesmer Anet <3
ANet doesn’t just nerf things because people complain about them. They rely heavily on metrics. Too heavily if you ask me.
I wish that were true but unfortunately that does not seem to be the case.
As for new thoughts on this topic, I’ve gotten used to the GCD though I by no means am happy with it, I am however willing to live with in the hopes that it is a temporary fix as we have been told. I just hope this isn’t one of those temp fixes that gets forgotten about.
Well Just logged on yesterday after the nerf and for me this nerf is really irritating as I spend a lot of my time running WvW with my guild and that dumb GCD is a pain when fighting multiple opponents. Not sure about everyone else but for me it was irritating me more and more as time went on, not to say that it is completely game breaking but for players with fast reflexes like me having to wait for that GCD to run out feels like a lifetime when you are tryin to string shatter combos
do a LA meeting in overflow xD
LOL thats hillarious, never seen that happen before, were you actually able to shatter em?
We are definitely slow but its doesn’t really bug me all that much. Yea sure all my thief, warrior, guard, engi, and ele buddies leave me in the dust in terms of normal movement speed but I can still keep up with blink, illusionary leap, and the occasional pistol to focus switch for a temporal curtain drop.
Running away from a big fight can be a bit of a problem though when our stun breaks like mirror images, decoy, blink fail to unlock us and we do not have that super sexy 25%+ move speed but oh well it comes with the territory, we have so many cool things about us I can deal with being a lil slow as a trade off, plus since we know we are generally slower than everyone else if we get stuck behind as our zerg retreats its usually because we weren’t payin attention or over extended our selves.
ugh wish guesting was up this sounds soooooooooo epic but im on Fort Aspenwood so boo LOL but great job organizing this! I hope we can get something like this set up on Aspenwood.
I am level 30 on my mesmer, have all blue/green gear etc. With one enemy, I can take them down ok, the problem is, with CDs and lack of a good AoE (and I don’t mean, 1 AoE with a CD too long to use a second time in a fight), running from enemy to enemy, you kill slower and slower, or you’re waiting on CDs before you pull the next one. I NEVER have this issue on any of my other alts. I have every prof up to level 30, and Mesmer is by far the squishiest, slowest killing of any of them, even with a glass spec.
This is where the “grinding” comes in… As a lvl 80 and I was downleveled for this part of the map pve I took on a Vet Cave Spider in timberline falls with ONLY a GS I just had 3 beserkers up and sat and watched as the spider killled one but was crippled again because of crippling dissipation. And then I set up another beserker… I honestly did not use the auto attack a SINGLE time…. I just stayed out of the way. Trust me mesmers really really are fun. In WvW you can solo a 2v1 with other players and WIN. So don’t hate the class.
I am not trying to hate the class, they just happen to be severely gimped at low levels. It’s probably one reason why most people don’t make it far in the leveling process with them. They depend WAY too much on traits, it seems.
Naw its really jus getting used to the mesmer, at the low lvls for a first time mesmer they are hard to get the hang of for most people and for the ones who find it really easy its usually because something about the playstyle just clicked for them(there really does seem to be a class/profession/job/what have you for everyone).
When I remade my mesmer(changed races) the early lvls were like a hot knife through butter. Most of the time my gear was about 10-15 lvls out of date before I’d upgrade it. Yea sure dps gets affected by that and slows u a lil bit but not by much and for a mesmer that is used to deceptive evasion not having it until lvl 40 was odd but not impossible. You just have to adjust your play style to compensate for the slower clone generation for a few lvls
Well dnt have any human toons but in the beta the human and norn seemed pretty hard for the story quests…as for the runes, oops my bad if they are 2/2 they wont stack past 2 but there are other runes that grant toughness other than dolyak, engineer rune is one that i can remember at the moment. oh and dnt buy 8 runes xD 6 is all ya need =P
um u might have to unequip everything then reequip it sometimes armor stat increases get buggy, i find that more often than not when i replace my runes the armor will read 12/6 for the number of runes on my gear but eventually it fixes its self, and the minor dolyaks do stack i believe its 4 of them for the max bonus
If you’re looking to actually kill pve mobs quickly and/or do reasonable aoe damage, mesmer isn’t the class for you. At least, not yet. The only way to get decent aoe damage as a mesmer is to run a shatter build. And if you want to run a shatter build, you absolutely must have deceptive evasion, which isn’t possible to trait to until level 40. So you’re going to continuously have the short end of the stick until that point in time, at which point you start doing some catch up.
Some general tips:
-don’t bother using confusion in pve. It is bad unless you really know what you’re doing, and even then its still relatively bad.
-decoy is the best “oshi-” button you have. Use it if you need to.
-The most efficient heal for you is going to be ether fest, if you aren’t using it already.
-Learn to kite properly. Good mechanics go a long way for the mesmer class.
-Time Warp is good, but if you think you might need Mass Invisibility to survive, don’t hesitate to use it. Saving amror repair costs is very, very good, and general pve is more free-for-all than teamwork anyways.
-Do not use underleveled armor. Always, always, ALWAYS have relevant masterwork armor at the least (meaning the req level is within 5 levels of you). Being under-geared is awful, especially if your weapon is outdated. The few extra silver you spend to keep your gear up to date goes a long, long way. And you will make this just from your travels/story mode, so do not skimp out on this!
-You generally want to avoid shatter #3. A 1s daze that you don’t have full control over on a mob that attacks once every 3-4 seconds is bad unless you get really lucky.
-Portal is a fantastic skill, but, outside of jumping puzzles, not in pve. Avoid unlocking it until you play WvW or sPvP.
-Feedback, Null Field, Chaos Storm, and Time Warp will all create etheral fields for you to combo with. If you use staff #2 or sword #3 to teleport while inside, you gain chaos armor. If you use a blast finisher (currently only The Prestige on the torch), you give all nearby allies chaos armor. Etheral Fields will also combo with most finishers to generate confusion.
-If you don’t use the shatter skills at all, you can leave your clones as meatshields to tank a shot or two from mobs. This can buy you loads of time and help you kite.
-Staff #2 can be activated at any time, even in the middle of an action and will not interrupt it. So if you cast staff #3, and part way through need to teleport, then teleport away!
-Always use a trident underwater. The clones you generate while wielding a trident cause confusion on hit. The amount of confusion you generate is unrivaled at any point by any class.
-The type of a clone you spawn depends on your mainhand weapon. If you are wielding a staff, all skills that generate clones will make staff clones (even utilities like decoy or mirror images). They cannot switch weapons.
those are all very good tips, but in terms of the up to date gear its not really a necessity, if you know how to play a mesmer u can let ur gear fall 5-10 lvls its not really a big deal. i wen 1-15 with lvl 1 gear(give or take a quest reward piece or 2) and 15-30 with lvl 15 gear all with no problem then ran ac with lvl 30 gear till about 60ish and crafted to 80 on my 2nd mesmer xD(have 2 only because I decided I wanted to race change from asura to sylvari =P)
dolyak and engi runes work as well since they add toughness and vit but cant remember what the lvl req is for those runes are tho
well gs/staff is imho the way to go for early leveling so good on that xD as for your gear i would look for toughness as your main stat with either vit or power or more toughness slotted i believe malachite jewels add toughness at the lower lvls if you are takin too much damage and need some extra defense.
A condition build is gunna be a lil tough to pull off at your level since you dnt got access to all our cool traits yet. I focused more on putting trait points into chaos for def and domination for power, also if you get 10 on chaos u can go for major trait #4 Illusionary defense and it will reduce dmg received by 3% for each illusion(clone or phantasm) you have on the field so with 3 illusions on the field you are reducing dmg by 9% which helps =P
Another thing is the staff is very defensive so when things get hairy use chaos storm on your self(it will give you a ton of buffs, i find its more useful to drop it on your self than to use it as an attack) and chaos armor then you can cast warlock, phase retreat, switch to gs use illusionary wave for knockback if the mobs are still to close to you and then wipe em out xD
well at level 25 you dnt have much flexability in your build choice but mind if i ask what you are running for your build and what weapon sets you are using?
Let’s try to tone this down a bit. Looks like people took it as a personal attack on them when I mentioned these things. So… Let me just say what I am really concerned with and try not to offend.
My biggest beef with the mesmer class is that they aren’t punished for shattering clones as they should be. Many builds actually encourage it. I like the idea of the class and played it in spvp and leveled a little.
Let me explain a bit further: Clones are cool idea, and they can be read through. I think the best player should be the one that mimics the clone, not a player than can toss them out like candy. If you do not think they can be spawned at a super rate, then I suggest you look for videos of it being done. I have seen it, and I am sure they are skilled players, but it still seems backwards. To me the shatters should be emergency buttons, and losing a clone should be a big deal to the mesmer. Ranger lose their pets, its their fault to some extent (and ranger is my #2 toon.) Engineers lose turrets easily and explode them on emergency vs picking them up. Granted the turrets are bad, but the idea is still solid I think. Necros lose pets, and it can be a very big deal to builds that revolve around them. You shouldn’t destroy your helpers unless you really need to. I would like to see the builds revolve more around phantasms and clones with good HP so players have to look for the right one. Guardian specced spirit weapons shouldn’t be undestructable as they seem to be either. If you choose a class that has a micro manage system of clones or what have you, then the class should be structured to support that system, not blow it up constantly in your face.
I would be open to a rework of the class myself that involved more about keeping clones alive for trickery and tankiness.
My OP was about playing on my Engineer, but I have played all classes and I know Engineer already has one leg in the hole. The burst control AoE shatter can be too much, and I think it should be toned down. Give the mesmers something to compenstate for it though.
we good mesmers? let’s shake hands ok?
Dude you you not think about what you write before you post? Mesmers do exactly what you are asking them to do. We manage our clones that is our major class mechanic….when we don’t have clones on the field we are boned which would mean we to get a penalty for shattering because we leave our self defenseless…we dnt “destroy our helpers unless we need to” and we do have emergency shatter buttons, f3 and f4. For someone who says they played the class you don’t seem like you were able to grasp the class’s play style at all.
If we dnt pop our clones or phantasms we lose most of our AOE ability as well. All other classes have tons of AOE from weapon skills or utilities but we do not, we get our AOE from our shatters.
So no hands are not shaken, dont complain about our mechanics and say we need a rework because we shouldnt be allowed to play our class the way its intended and then ask for a hand shake
the funny thing is even with all they’ve been doin to us because of the QQ threads we are still owning ppl and making making ppl cry xD Its not that our class is OP we are just more skilled than the noobs who post all these QQ threads so it seems like we are OP haha
I’m a newly 80 and I’m so excited! Finally can be in tons of FOTM and AC Exp runs my guild host daily! When I set foot inside AC exp mode———died….died——-more deaths! The conditions were eating me up in my full shatter DPS build! Especially, the lack of movement with torch made me lack behind my entire party. I was dying more than a lvl 37 guildies in our party, so embarrassed. I guess I could expect no less from a full glass cannon build but I was hardly doing any damage to the bosses as my damage ranged from 300-400 per shatter burst T^T My equipment is 20/20/0/0/30 full Beserker gear from armor to accessories, with major rune of centaur. Keep in mind, this is my PvE gear, how I grind to lvl 80 primary through events and hearts. Now I want to be a dungeon master. I really don’t care about sPvP and WvW atm.
Please, to all the Mesmer elite players, share your wisdom on how to do dungeon farming effectively with high survival-ability and “possible” medium to high DPS?
Thank you.
well glass builds kinda get eaten up in dungeons unless ur uber careful and on you toes with ur dodges, what weapon sets are you running?
seriously coming from an engineer as well,
this guy needs to learn his class… Engs adapt to anything.
So learn to change your style to counter a mesmer..
exactly =P
Im down for a MH pistol too, I think it would be awesome especially since our scepter is sooooo screwy now, hell replace scepter with MH pistol =P I don’t really understand why we can’t dual wield pistols like the other classes but we can dual swords lol
its a f1→f3 shatter bug meaning that f3 was acting as an extra mind wrack
not true, they said they would be addressing the shatter build as well and it was F1→F3 not the F2
I basically disagree with the first post in this thread (as layed out earlier by other posts and my own). But some posts paint an unfair picture too. The Mesmer ain’t that weak, as some describe it. Yes we die quickly if we run out of illusions and yes, we do not deal 2k dmg with each single hit. But do we need to?
I actually had to rework my Mesmer for WvW purposes and wanted a build that works in PvE as well as WvW and I believe I found that for me. Relying on phantasms do deal direct dmg and apply bleeding and clones to also cause bleeding and fuel my shatters I am very pleased with the performance of the mesmer. I still struggle sometimes, but after 2 weeks of constant training in different WvW situations and tweaking my gear to the stats I desire, I find myself quite effective in both PvE and WvW.
Often switching my weapons, to get the most out of it, and using different weapons for WvW and PvE I think that the Mesmer (in the right hands) is very powerfull but not overpowered. Maybe there are some issues to be dealt with (clones not breaking target is one of them imho), but for the most part the Mesmer is fine as it is atm and I love playing that profession.
If only more people realized that =P Mesmers are not over powered they just have a play style that most players are not used to dealing with so they QQ and beg us to be nerfed into the ground. It takes a lot of work to be a good mesmer.
Seriously?….Were you high when you thought this up?
1.) Our shatters have CD’s…have u ever played a mesmer? I’m willing to bet the answer is a flat out no! MindWrack(F1) has a 15 sec CD and is our only attacking shatter. Cry of Frustration(F2) has a 30 sec CD for a mere 3 sec of confusion [bold]IF[/bold] we have 3 illusions on the field(phantasms or clones) [bold]AND ONLY IF[/bold] they all hit you. Diversion(F3) has a 45 sec CD for a mere 3 sec of daze if it even works half the time it seems to fail. Lastly Distortion(F4) has an insanely long 60 sec CD for a max of 3 sec of invulnerability [bold]IF[/bold] we have 3 illusions up when we pop it. So No, just no…if you don’t know then don’t speak.
2.) LOL! Unless you are spec’ed for deceptive evasion you only have 2 skills per weapon set that will create an illusion and even with deceptive evasion and mirror images + decoy(the 2 utilities to make illusions) thats a total of 9 illusions that can be generated all at once if you want to play foolishly and blow all you illusion CDs and your endurance meter for dodges and leave your self totally vulnerable which no one will do, not to mention the fact that we can only have 3 on the field at a time. Also illusions tend to die rather quickly, leaving us rather unprotected as illusion generation is our main source of damage reduction by way of deception.
3.) Hardly any targeting? If you are talkin about 1v1 scenarios we are targeting you and in non 1v1 scenarios its called AOE…what are you gunna start QQ’ing about the fact that placement AOEs such as a ele’s meteor shower allow hardly any targeting? How about you run away from the AOE plus most players know how to effectively dodge a shatter…obviously you do not.
4.) First of all the LOS issue is not true…and secondly most illusions spawn at the mesmers location baring a few such as the GS’s 2 atk but it spawns a clone that usually dies before it can be useful because its in melee range. Then theres Illusionary leap which spawns a clone that runs into melee range and dies most of the time before you can use the swap ability which is the only reason to use that skill…that clone should actually spawn at target location but it does not and it hurts us.
5.) Really?!? Confusion has the same mechanic as retaliation…do not attack when you have it on you its very simple…..
6.) Portal…a skill that deal 0 damage to you and that has an insanely short usage time once the exit portal is placed in conjunction with the fact that its CD is at least 70 sec long is what your going to try and complain about next? Please…
7.) LOL! Most of our skills are crap so having some nice elites helps and besides you complaining about fighting us in WvW since moa morph is single target it makes it rather unhelpful in WvW situations and therefore most mesmers I see, my self included do not run with it. In sPvP its used a bit more but still not as much and with time warp its simple to deal with it, do not stand in the bubble and if there are ranged players in the bubble attacking you get out of there range…I mean come on do you need some one to baby sit you and tell you how to play this game everytime someone attacks you? There is a dodge ability for a reason, and TW does not make people deal higher damage its just increased attack rate which = ^of dps but if you arent gettin hit by it by goin out of range poof problem solved. Mass invisibility is a problem for you? Thieves can stealth their party way more efficiently than us using mass invis or veil and I don’t see you complaining about them.
So do your homework before you try to rant please…
the early lvls are not hard at all it just depends on the weapon sets ur using, of course if ur using a sword or scepter its gunna be slow and a lil harder all you need for the early lvls is GS and Staff like my self and other mesmers have alrdy said. Also if you are utilizing you weapon swaps right and managing your clones the right way you always have at least 1-2 clones on the field
No, the early levels are not hard, they are boring. Sword is actually amazing for leveling, the 2 skill is pretty good damage and does wonders for getting you out of sticky situations, and the auto attack hits harder than any of our other auto attacks, as far as I can tell (really good against destructibles).
2 clones are easy to get out at the start of a fight, but 3 clones is a better finisher. Staff clones are your main source of damage with that weapon set, so it’s helpful to open with 3 and easier to maintain them throughout a long fight.
sword is great, dnt get me wrong i run gs/ sword+pistol on my 80 but for lvlin purposes gs/staff is the easiest since it gives u the most aoe. also the sword does seem to do a lil more dmg on auto atk than the other weapons but i feel the gs auto is faster and it does around the same dmg so it gives a lil better dps so i only use sword for 3 then 2 roll back cast 4 on pistol and then 5 then switch back to gs, i dnt like stayin on sword for too long b/c of the slower auto and the need to be in melee range.
My mesmer is level 40, so I can only speak up to that. It was pretty bad from about 10-20. It picked up a bit from 20-30, but became painful again from 30-40. I was using staff and sword/something.
The main problem I had is that you rely heavily on clones, but your clone spawning is very slow. Survival was pretty easy (I don’t think I ever died outside when my computer started freezing). At 40 you can get clone on dodge, which means you can start a fight with 3 clones out without wasting a utility skill with a huge cooldown. You also get clone bleed on crit when you dive deep enough for clone on dodge, which with staff is very useful, since bleed stacks are one of your major damage sources.
I haven’t done much levelling past 40, since I want to experience some other classes first, but I anticipate it being much easier with reliable and fast clone spawning.

Using the staff and gs together great for leveling since 2 and 4 on the gs give you some aoe(3 does too but its a small area) plus iberserker is a good source of burst and then u have a knockback on 5. As for the staff 5 is an aoe with conditions and buffs for ur self if u stand in the field(very helpful) 3 is a phantasm that deals more dmg per condition on the target(i like to use 3 right after 5), 4 is chaos armor to apply confusion to any melee enemies that try to hit you and 2 is an evade. So for the early lvls running with both of these is fun cuz you got the aoe to handle multiple enemies so lvlin is a bit faster than if u went with any other weapon combo but at 80 i personally like to run GS/ Sword+Pistol
Look in the chest to the left of him and hit F
great advice im sure no one having this issue has tried that….
i had this same problem last night and filed an in-game bug report and attached a screen shot so hopefully they are reading the posts on here from ppl who didnt get rewards and checking the bug reports we are all filing
How about you guys take your PvE talk outside PvP forums?
I second that, besides glass cannon builds are horrible for a mesmer in PVE go with PVT gear and stop whining about how its tough to lvl a mesmer when its not
actually since the latest patch d/d eles and mesmers pretty much are gods, when experienced pvp’ers have trouble dealing with noobs simply because of the class they playing its serious business..
im sorry but an experienced pvp’er should not have any problems dispatching a noob mesmer or ele regardless of the profession they are running because a noob player cant play a complex profession such as an ele or mesmer to the best of its potential. If your having trouble with noob mesmers and eles you cant call your self an experienced pvp’er.
I can spot a noob mesmer from a mile away and i love showin em how to really use a mesmer by cuttin thru em like a hot knife through butter, same goes for eles. This is because most “noob” players that pick these professions automatically go google glass cannon builds and the wrong spvp gear set up and dnt know how to play a glass cannon the right way.
Easiest kills in spvp…so i dnt understand the QQ’ing
i hope this doesn’t take anet half a year to be fixed…
im sure every mesmer main feels that way, i know i sure do lol
its a bug that happens randomly and is extremely annoying
