Who said its a surprise?
They dont care about people farming things, they allowed key farming for years. This is probably why they changed it now.
Halloween Weapons have returned to the Black Lion Weapons Specialist for a limited time, priced at 2 tickets each.
And here is the real reason for the elimination of key farming.
Limited time availability + no key farming + 2 tickets per skin = $$$
Yes, this is the one I just bought. GMG are a good shop. They are not shady or whatever. I have got games from them for a long time now. Very reasonable.
Just out of interest did your account have restrictions? I have found that mine has some of the restrictions, but not all. Like I am only level 11 so far (guardian) but can go to lions arch. Even though the rules say level 35. However the trade shop is blocked of some items and it says wait 4 days (that’s fine). But it also says upgrade to heart of thorns. We will still be able to do normal account stuff yes, after the 4 days? Just not play the new area and things? That’s ok too, but bag space is a pain – I had to keep throwing away items as I could not sell them. I’m not too worried on waiting a bit. Thier is plenty to explore.
The TP and gold/item mail restrictions are lifted after 5 days, all other restrictions should already be gone when you redeemed the full version code.
You should already have all 5 character slots and all 5 bag slots, no travel restrictons, /map chat, etc.
That window saying you still need to upgrade to HoT is erroneous, obviously they did not take into account new players still buying the core game. Or else its a deliberate attempt to make another HoT sale when its not really necessary. I informed them of that wrong message weeks ago and its still there so obviously not a priority to fix it.

No one is forced to buy the core game. The US$10 price for the game was for limited amounts of time; the price went back to ‘normal’ and there were also smaller discounts.
Thats not what I said. If they want to remove the restrictions, they are “forced” to buy the full expansion even if all they want is the core game.
Of course nobody is forced to buy the core game, they aren’t even allowed to buy it any more without searching out an old copy.
No new password. With the authenticator, you have to set it up once and enter a code from it once, then it will only ask for a new code again if you change PCs or your IP goes to a different subnet.
For my dynamic IP, all that changes is the last number and it allows that entire range without a new code. ie xx.xx.xx.1-255 is allowed.
Cheapest I have seen lately is $15.99 for GW2 Core Heroic Edition at greenmangaming.com, in the VIP sale section. They are a legitimate online retailer.
I bought it that way, didnt want to waste $50 on an expansion before I even played the core game. I’m in no hurry for the expansion,. I’ll get it when its on sale some day.
Anet obviously does not want to make a cheaper option available when they can use the F2P trial to coerce new players to buy a full price expansion instead.
Maybe it’s because they are a company, not only with bills to pay but with stockholders who need to see that the expansion is bringing in the sales. The trouble with using gems is that gems bought before a quarterly report’s time period can’t be counted towards current sales. Let’s say a significant number of people buy the expansion with “old” gems. All those gems have been reported already and all the expansions sold that way don’t count towards that quarter’s finances. It hurts ANet’s financial records and makes the expansion look like it’s not selling well.
I didnt say anything about using gems. I dont think its right, however, to force new players to buy an expansion when the full core game was being sold by Anet for $10 just a few months back. They seemed to be paying the bills just fine then.

Well, you cant technically buy power, unless you sell the gems for gold and buy whatever gear you want on the Trading Post.
I just recovered my old Gw1 account so I could get the HoM rewards, and the miniature section at least I think I have covered since every one of my 8 characters has 5 birthday presents sitting in their inventories.
I had a few characters at 20 but had to basically start a new character as I could not remember at all how to play it.
That said, I am seriously enjoying it, and even my aging PC can play it with everything maxed at 1080P.
Whatever package you get, be sure you get EOTN obviously. I was a bit surprised at the high prices still being asked for it, might be worth waiting for a steam sale if they still have them for GW1.
Doesnt the Heroic chest only give you one set from those 3 armors?
Ive been afraid to unpack the chest as Im not sure which one I want yet, but it tells me to choose one of the armor types from the 3 available.
Both work, but all the wireless devices connect to the Cisco wireless N router.
You can turn off the wireless signal on the uverse router/modem, but its not necessary if you dont have a lot of wireless channel clutter in your household.
Basically just run an ethernet cable from one of the ports on the uverse router to the wan/internet port on the extra router and set it up as an access point.
No, I don’t use the Uverse wireless as that’s only Wireless G.
I have a Cisco Wireless N router attached to it.
Though with the slow speeds from Uverse (18Mbps in my case), I think wireless G would actually be fast enough. I get a better signal from my own router, plus there aren’t enough free wired ports on the cable modem with all the crap they hook up to it.
Of course hard-wired is always better, but unfortunately its not always feasible.
(edited by Angus.5961)
Im also stuck with U-verse and have no connectivity issues, but I dont have anyone else playing Destiny at the same time.
Does Destiny use that much bandwidth, or was somebody downloading or patching?
Maybe try temporarily moving the PC closer to the access point and avoid using the repeater to see if the problem persists.
Or try using a different wireless adapter/card, maybe that’s malfunctioning.
When Ive had wireless signal problems, Ive always had really good luck using an old wireless router set to client mode as an adapter, and wire directly from the PC and console to the client mode router.

I had a 4850 that died pretty much the same way about 4 years ago.
I agree with the above, try cleaning it really well first, the shutdowns could be a heat issue.
Probably because the vast majority of the player base convert gold to gems to buy gemstore items.
I can’t blame them for removing items if it helps them increase rl money gem purchases.
Those exchange gems are still purchased in the first place.
F2P players definitely could help to maintain the game without spending a dime, if Anet allowed them to buy gems with gold.
They could provide a ready market for player bought gems, indirectly supporting the game.
(edited by Angus.5961)
It’s a real nuisance for those who would use free accounts to assemble armies of bots to accumulate massive amounts of gold to sell for real money.
Which is, of course, the point.
That applies to the sales and item/gold transfer limitations, not so much to the purchase limitations. Those are there just to force people to buy the game.
(edited by Angus.5961)
Very little gear can be purchased or sold, except for the basic ones that can be crafted at every 5 levels.
So the only way they can make any money off the market is by selling gathered crafting materials or selling crafted items, if you can even make money doing that.
Id guess you would make more off the actual materials.
Any random drop gear can only be used personally or salvaged, none of it can be sold.
I imagine one positive result of this would be a larger market for crafted gear since that’s all they can buy.
(edited by Angus.5961)
Or use google authenticator on that same phone.
I just bought the core game cheap so Im not in any hurry to get the expansion.
Ill buy it when the price drops significantly.
Im also slightly bothered by the fact that a few months ago you could get the full game for $10 (I didnt know about it at the time), but now there is no way to buy the core game at all if you believe the official site or in-game info.
So the only option for most new players who want to remove all the restrictions is to pay $50 for an expansion they may not want or need. So, you’re that bothered to pay 50$ once for the full core game and the expansion, which will bring tons of new content, on top of the exicting one, which is huge, not to mention LW3, you will get to play for free if you buy now, and all the new events and stuff that will follow?
Anet, stated many times that each new content will be tied to the expansion, and it will be required to have it to play the new content, so good luck playing gw2 the way you play it now without the expansion. Of course you will be able to play the old content as much as you like, but you will miss everything new past October 23th.Also not to broke your hopes or anything, but dont expect the price to drop anywhere between 6 months or a year. In that time, you would’ve missed the thrill to play the new content when the whole server is playing it, and when you do get to finally play it the experience will be nowhere the same.
I don’t care one bit about being the first to play the new content.. I just started playing GW2. It plays just fine after 3 years of never playing it. Why would I be in any hurry to play the expansion?
I never claimed that I expected it to be cheap within 6 months or a year. As I said, I do not care. I prefer NOT to play it when its new and the whole server is playing it.
How will the game be any less for me than it is now if I don’t get the expansion? You make no sense. Are they taking things away if you don’t have the expansion?
What was so bad about the game for the past 3 years? If its so awful without the expansion, then why are you even still playing it?

And how often/ how many players will this shocking^^ experience affect?
Almost noone
Not even a week in and I have seen other posts with this same problem, so it is affecting players. Probably more new players than those with all level 80s, so I guess you wouldn’t care.
(edited by Angus.5961)
I didn’t want to go back through 12 pages to be sure no one else mentioned it- I decided to level a new ele. I got a key for level 10 yesterday and for level 40 today. If I have a character without level 40 story done, I will try to get it done this week to be sure only level 10 is impacted.
Success! I got a key for level 40 story on two different characters today.
I did the opposite. I did the 40 story soon after the patch and got the 40 key. A few days later I did a new character and the 10 story, NO KEY.
I guess the level 10 key cant be the second one in the week, no matter what level the first was.
This has happened to me and at least one other person.
Since the patch, I did the level 40 story and got the key. I don’t consider this to be “early” in the story, so assumed I could still get the level 10 key on a new character.
So a day or 2 ago I started a new character and did NOT receive the level 10 key.
Others on the forum have claimed they got the level 40 key after getting the level 10 key since the patch, but apparently you dont get it on a new character after getting the level 40 key on an older character.
Same thing happened to me. I was positive that I had not done a level 10 story key after the patch, though I did get the level 40.
Thursday or Friday I started a new character and did not get the level 10 key.
If this is intended behavior then it really does penalize new players.

Or maybe at 5 scraps in 9 or 10 months, the player looks at his scraps, thinks about how long it would take to get the rest, and springs for some keys to try for one ticket to get the newest weapon. It fits together with nerfing the free, fast way to get the rest of the scraps to get a ticket. People are more likely to buy enough to finish the ones they have than to buy enough to get 10 scraps when they have zero scraps.
This system is not to give people enough keys to get a ticket. It’s to give them enough keys so they buy more keys to finish the scraps they have (and not farm them).
Or more likely, they key farm the 4 allowed a month to make up for the few scraps needed.
So where are the up/down arrows and everything else that make it look just like every other number input box as you claim?
Why are you even arguing about this? Does it really hurt your white knight sensitivities that much?
(edited by Angus.5961)
Like the message says when you try to buy or sell something on the TP, you have to wait for the 5 day timer to run out before you can fully use the trading post.
I had the same problem last week, though I upgraded with the core game so it kept telling me I still had to buy the expansion, which is untrue.
Even with the restricted Trading Post, you can still buy junk gear every 5 levels so its a better option than wasting money on crafting early on.
Wait, you were caught on the fact it never occurred to you to click on the default 400 gems and change it? How is that not intuitive? It’s just like every other input field on the TP. I will admit that sometimes I click on the Buy More Gems under the field than the buy button to the right of the coin amount.
Because if you dont click on the exact tiny spot, it goes to the buy gems screen. Nowhere does it indicate that you can type in the number field.
Despite your condescending claim, it looks nothing like any of the other number input fields in the game that I have seen where you can change the values.
(edited by Angus.5961)
I just tried it and kept getting the “buy gems” screen until I clicked on the 400 and got the text cursor to change the qty. Its not very intuitive.
I never did any key farming before, but I think I’ll be doing that once a week key now.
F2P accounts are not the problem with key farming. They have no possible way to transfer the keys, loot or gold off the account.
Same here, got to about 280 MB and its sitting there at 0-2K/s
Why install software when you can simply opt to receive a SMS for free? I mean, if you’re young and don’t have a phone yet, fair enough, but otherwise?
There are a multitude of reasons why this may not be optimal.
Poor signal, charges for text messages, delayed text messages, Anet not accepting your mobile number for sms messaging, etc.
The phone app or winauth or browser extensions or various other authenticators really are free, while SMS technically is not.
WinAuth works fine for me, no malware.
But if you dont want to try it again, there are plenty of other authenticators.
Google Authenticator for Android or IOS is probably the best.
There are also various Chrome extensions for running it on windows, probably the same for Firefox.
I see plenty of new players in every starter zone.
I just started with F2P so I cant compare it to before, but thereis certainly a large population in those areas.
Remember, F2P players have only been playing for at most 2 weeks, and if they havent upgraded to a full paid game then they are playing with some severe restrictions so they probably aren’t leveling all that fast.
You can unlock everything for $15.99 with the GW2 core game from other authorized online retailers, no need to spend $50 on the expansion. Ill buy the expansion when its a lot cheaper, its not like Ill need it right away anyway.
The restrictions for F2P players are significant. I just started playing after F2P and within a day I bought the core GW2 game to get rid of those restrictions.
I still have another free account and after playing the paid version for a week, went back and tried the free account.
1. Only 2 character slots
2. Only 3 bag slots
3. Extremely limited set of items you can purchase from the TP.
4. Same limited set of items that you can sell so forget making any money selling off your extra drops.
5. No mailing of gold or items, ever.
6. You can’t even enter a city until level 10
7. You can’t enter Lions Arch or use Asura gates until level 35
8. No WvW until level 35 I believe
9. No daily login rewards
10. No /map chat
11. No forum posting
12. and the list goes on…
So yea, you can play for free and eventually see all of the same content, but you will do it mostly while broke and with substandard gear.
(edited by Angus.5961)
If that patch was supposed to fix the no rewards issue, well I just did a bunch of incursions with a level 26 character in Kessex and got absolutely nothing. Completed probabaly 8-10 at least with gold thru bronze completions.
Am I missing something here? Not enough participation?
Edit: Okay after a relog I got 2 crates, one with the map bonus 5 blooms and another with 20 and a choice of scarlet box or arid satchel. So I guess its working but I hope it doesnt take a relog for every set
(edited by Angus.5961)
Do you honestly think that its okay to force people to buy the upgrade to get TP access when they already paid for the full core game?
And its not exactly spending more money when it was about 1/4 the price of the expansion and I have no plans to ever buy the expansion unless it is similarly discounted.
(edited by Angus.5961)
It does not requrie the code on every login, just once to authorize your pc and then it asks again if something changes, like your IP or a different PC.
I use google authenticator on IOS and WinAuth on PC as a backup.
Anet is not the sole retailer of official copies of GW2. There are still authorized retailers selling the original game, and in some cases for significantly less than $50. Yet if somebody buys it now, they apparently are not entitled to the same rights as somebody who bought it 2 weeks ago.
It’s really not that hard to understand. Talking in circles is not going to change the fact that they are not dealing fairly. Or else they have made some serious errors or oversights in the implementation.
(edited by Angus.5961)
Have you submitted a ticket? If yes, talk to support. Posting on the forums isn’t going to get it fixed.
Of course I submitted a ticket, going on 3 days now. I never claimed to expect them to fix anything from a forum post, but it doesn’t hurt to let other potential customers know how they are being forced to get the expansion if they want the same rights as previous GW2 buyers.
(edited by Angus.5961)
Okay, everything I had read made it sound like the TP restrictions started on accounts after August 28.
One thing I am fairly sure of, previous paid accounts did not get a pop up window/message saying they must upgrade to the expansion in order to use the TP. I am still seeing that as well.
(edited by Angus.5961)
That policy is ridiculous. For f2p accounts, fine have the restrictions. But I paid for the full game, and yet I have more restrictions than those who paid for the same game a week earlier. They had no waiting period.
So because there are free accounts, paying customers get unduly restricted now?
I sent in a ticket, still waiting for a response.
(edited by Angus.5961)
I activated the full game on a free account and everything worked fine, except the TP is still restricted which may be a bug or may be a waiting period.
It seems like every other restriction was lifted and I have all bag and char slots, etc.
Mail for new accounts also has a waiting period, I’ll see if that works as time goes by.
Id suggest he starts a new account with the code and doesn’t try to upgrade a free account, maybe that will work better with the TP.
I started a free acct Friday and upgraded it to a core GW2 full account yesterday. I also have the full locked TP. I saw the message about a 4 day wait to sell (and requiring HoT which should not be right when I bought the core game) but nothing was said about purchase restrictions anywhere. Account upgrade FAQ mentions mail restrictions for new accounts, but also nothing about the TP.
Looks like a serious bug or oversight to me.
I was hoping that the restrictions would be lifted after 4 days, but going by the OP here, its not looking good.
