That’s all fine and good, except it did not go to the nearest…my expectations are fine, the functionality is simply incorrect.

At 00:14 of this video, you can clearly see that the downed supervisor is much closer to the pet when the skill is activated than the downed player the pet ran to. Nearest is not what it did – it is not working correctly.

You should always learn the rules of a skill, before you set up expectations for it. The pet will revive the nearest downed or defeated, player or NPC, within about 600 range of the pet. Not yourself. So when you trigger Search and Rescue, you have to keep in mind where the pet is, and who’s closest to it. Guild Wars 2 has no skills that effects a selected ally, only a selected foe. But you can use “Guard” to send the pet to a selected location, and then use Search and Rescue.

I don’t consider pet skills to be reliable or on demand enough to be a viable basis for this kind of thing…I wish it were otherwise, but it’s just the reality. I’d be happy to recant however should someone show me a video of this in practice…

So I experienced something last night I hadn’t had happen before and can’t explain – had one downed target selected and my pet went to an entirely different on the Search and Rescue usage. Anyone else have this happen?

You can see it twice in this vid. Any ideas?

Dual wielding axes....good or bad?

Mainhand Axe is good, but it suffers because 33% of it’s skills and 63% of it’s damage is bugged…we do 63% less damage than we should. That’s an issue. The # 3 power for PvP and the #1 power for PvE are nice to be sure.

Offhand is very situational in my opinion, but it can be used to very good effect when used well. It dovetails nicely with several of the ranger skills – all of the combo fields it can self-produce for example (Water, Fire, Ice and via the pet, Poison). as well as the additional stacking sources of Vulnerability. It can also be used before or after a Swoop or Leap, out of Stealth or before and/or after invulnerability or with AoE Chills, Roots or Immobilizes…

I use Offhand-Axe on my Toughness/Boon Duration Ranger, has perma Might/Fury/Swiftness, good damage mitigation so it offsets some of the downsides. Offhand Warhorn I agree is very very hard to not use, but since our signet was bumped to +25%, I find using that and freeing up the offhand slot, at least for movement speed, works well enough.

My advise is to judge it how it works in practice, in context, not just on paper, before making a decision – and go with what works for you, regardless of what other people say.

Pets F2 skills make the pet run to the target before using.

I can, and will, post videos showing that the pet will leave your side and run off when you press F2 – even for skills which are obviously intended to be applied to you, and not the enemy. This is clearly wrong, and I have nothing good to say about anyone who thinks otherwise.

It should be changed, it should be fixed, end of story.

I use HaO when soloing camps or roaming, Healing Spring when I’m on a wall defending or manning Siege – or as part of a group at a gate – and TU if I’m fighting with a large group of my own team, where I’m mobile working around the edges of contact with the enemy force, throwing traps or ranging down specific targets with range-buffed Longbow.

As with all else with our beloved Ranger, I think the heal you should use depends les on your build stat-wise and more on what skills you are using and what you are doing operationally.

Well, for me, especially in WvW, I find the extra range, the AoE of Barrage, the knock-back and the ‘tracking/hitting through stealth’ of Rapid Fire pretty much make Longbow a must have. I can’t count the number of situations where each of those things individually has been hugely useful…having them together seals the deal in my opinion.

Turning a problem into an opportunity

As some of you no doubt feel, the Ranger traits – the way the lines are packaged with the stat effects and the specific trait-granted abilities – are not ideal, and in fact, seem quite counter intuitive. Here’s a quick recap:

Marksmanship – Power, Condition Duration
Skirmishing – Precision, Critical Damage
Wilderness Survival – Toughness, Condition Damage
Nature Magic – Vitality, Boon Duration
Beastmastery – Healing Power, Pet Attribute Bonus

So, a few notable, questionable arrangements:

Skirmishing, the line which describes itself as being trap-related, with 3 trap-based traits, is not the line with either of the the Condition bonuses. It also contains the Shortbow-related trait, again which could benefit from a Condition bonus but does not.

Nature Magic, is the line which grants a Boon Duration bonus…but has almost no boons associated with it, unlike the 4 found in Wilderness Survival, or the 3 found in Skirmishing or those in Marksmanship.

Longbow Range trait and Timer reduction trait are in two different lines…

As an example of good synergy, Skirmishing, which is Precision and Critical Damage, does have several crit-related traits.

But, this is not necessarily a bad thing…traits are about more than their stat bonuses or related effects or synergies, but also about abilities granted. For the ranger, in the context of ‘hot-swapping’ – stepping out of combat to change your skills and traits, and even gear and pet – this opens up a whole set of possibilities.

As example, something I have been doing of late – I am currently traited 20/30/20/0/0 – on a ‘ranged trapper’ build, with this as my default traiting:

Signet Mastery, Eagle Eye
Primal Reflexes, Trapper’s Expertise, Trap Potency
Soften the Fall, Off-Hand Training

Range for the Longbow, Trap traits, and offhand for the Warhorn. Skills are usually Heal as One, Flame Trap or Signet of the Hunt or Signet of Stone, Viper’s Nest and Spike Trap, Entangle as Elite, with a condition-heavy gear set (1400+ condition damage). This is well-suited for ‘ground work’, where traps and mobility are important, but it is not good at all for ‘wall work’ – attacking down from walls.

Since in most cases, when setting up to defend a fortification beforehand or between running in and getting up onto the walls you will have a moment where you are out of combat and can make loudout changes…doing so can complete alter how your character is ‘slanted’. For fighting from walls down, I switch to:

Steady Focus or Beastmaster’s Bond, Eagle Eye
Sharpened Edges, Quick Draw, Moment of Clarity
Wilderness Knowledge, Off-Hand Training or Hide in Plain Sight

Skills are switched to Healing Spring, Guard or Protect Me, Muddy Terrain and Quickening Zephyr, with Rampage As One or Spirit of Nature as Elite. Gear – all of it – is switched from a Condition Damage and Vitality/Toughness/Power/Precision balanced set (1400 CD, 20k HP, 2400 Armor, 2600 Attack, 30/30 Crit) to a Power and Precision/Vitality/Toughness/Crit Damage set (200 CD, 18k HP, 2400 Armor, 3350 Attack, 37/71 Crit)…these numbers do not take food into account etc.

So as you can see, because of how our traits are set up, you can significantly change your loadout and get very different results, just by making these changes. Granted switching these things is not as easy as in some games – but it’s well worth doing I think. We may get screwed on being optimal, but there is a silver lining to that cloud!

Big +1 to the above regarding Range!

I love the Ranger, even with it’s many issues, because I can do stuff like this. I find ranger to be excellent for situations that are specific-task oriented…monitor/defend a chokepoint, take out a piece of siege or point defense, solo a camp, revive something critical, getting into a tower through a hostile zerg…it’s not the best at more than 1 thing, but it’s good at a lot.

While there are many valid complaints regarding the Ranger, there is still a lot of good to be had with the class – and many ways it can be quite useful in WvW. I recorded 3 situations tonight where Ranger-specific skills were used to what I think is good effect. Ranger may not do any one thing better than anyone else, but it definitely does a lot of things well.

Careful – even though he is completely wrong and both you and I are completely right, he felt the need to report my post and I received a violation – for being “rude”. He does not appear to be interested in accurate information nor in taking responsibility for being inaccurate…he may report you however, insult your server, or challenge you to a duel however…

In any case, the tooltip comment is misdirection, Entangle is bugged, period. It is important that this fact is clear and accurately stated – it is not working correctly. Hopefully ANet agrees that this is the case – I for one would like to see it fixed some day.

As some have mentioned Entangle does NOT deal 20k points of straight damage, it is dealt through bleeding damage and as bleeding IS a condition, it IS effected by building condition damage. As the tooltip can be bugged, (as with virtually any skill of any mmo) it is true that your condition damage does not always convert correctly. HOWEVER this is not always true.

Way to state the obvious…

Of course the tool tip is not always incorrect. I’m telling you that it is incorrect for entangle. It is incorrect for this specific instance we’re talking about. And I’m giving you a method to verify it for yourself. Since you obviously have not done so, let’s see if I can make this more simple for you…

The Entangle tool tip shows 20k bleed damage as IF your condition damage stat is increasing the bleed damage of entangle.

This is NOT actually happening because the tool tip is incorrect.

Verify this for yourself by observing the damage on the bleed ticks of entangle (43 if I recall).

Note that the bleed damage is NOT increased (to 100+ per tick).

Sigh. Please don’t spread misinformation.

Actually, on watching this again in slow motion, I can see that the Entangle simply seems to miss…I wasn’t aware this was possible, seems kind of absurd to have an Elite miss every mob nearby. Is this intentional or a bug?

So as some of us have no doubt experienced, the Entangle elite skill sometimes fails. I’d like to see if we can figure out why – some set of circumstances or conditions common to these failures that we can identify and report towards hopefully getting the issue addressed, assuming there is one.

I experienced such a failure an hour or so ago, and happened to be recording – you can find the video here. Skill goes off and on recast time, minus any root effect or bleeding from Entangle.

Things of note going on in this case that I can think of are the number of mobiles in the activation radius, the nature of the mobiles (supply camp NPCs and Quaggans only, no players) and my movement characteristics. If we can find something reproducable that would help in getting this fixed.

Please post your own or describe things that you’ve experience that may be behind this bug. Thanks for any and all info and input!

Ranger’s are fine in WvW, it’s really just a question of build and usage. If you want to be effective in combat but also support the group, I would suggest a trap condition build with a pet that heals such as the Moa or Fernhound, as well Healing Spring. Trapping chokepoints, creating combo fields, clearing conditions etc – all very useful.

As a Ranger, if you trait into extra range for Longbow, you’ll be important for clearing point defenses and siege on fortification walls – there are lots of ways a Ranger can be effective in WvW. You just need try something different before giving up.

Random Vids - Point Blank, Traps and Prowl

Was going through my recent recordings and noticed a couple that have some interesting things worth sharing.

In this first one, I find myself in the happy position of sneaking up on an enemy in an elevated position at the edge of a cliff manning an Arrow Cart. All I needed to do was use Point Blank to knock him off to a hilarious death…

Except, in my excitement at finding myself in this position, I failed to notice via the little icons under his name that he was a Guardian, and had Aegis up from his Virtue of Courage. So, my first shot was blocked, and the knockback failed. Doh! So while most videos people post are meant to show things they do well, this one is more of a ’don’t make this mistake’ case. Always take note of what effects are active on your target – mostly and especially when you have time like I did here.

Rest of the video is useful I suppose for showing how this trap build works – kind of a messy fight since I was expecting him to be canyon-mush, but it does demonstrate the build’s good amount of condition damage and mobility. Lots of dodging, protection etc – with the Elite in reserve.

This next one shows how the Norn Elite Leopard form skill ‘Prowl’ can be used to open up Stealth to the Ranger for sneaking into a defended area. The end result is not terribly good, but it does demonstrate how you can use this stealth ability in conjunction with hiding behind terrain, moving with the timer etc, to get where you need to be. What you do once you get there is a whole other thing.

One other thing this video shows – at one point I used Longbow’s Rapid Fire with the treb targetted – note how it only shoots at the base of the treb and thus the shots are obstructed, while there is another 20 feet of treb in clear LoS extending upward. Funny.

No, it will not. It is bugged…it will have more negative effect than positive. We need fixes before we start modifying things any further…

Now now you guys…piercing will obvious make the weapons more viable and certainly we dont want this..We will dominate in pvp,imagine the disapoinment that other classes will have,it will be a huge complainment list in every profession forum.Its so unbalanced…

To be fair, even with Entangle’s bugged nature, it is still a very good Elite. I run a condition-based ranged-traps build and Entangle essentially allows me to solo Supply Camps in WvW fairly easily – providing there are not more than 1 or 2 player defenders.

It is true experienced players are unlikely to stay rooted for the duration, and it often is either removed immediately or does not even apply correctly – in cases where it is not removed, and does work, it makes a huge difference. It can in fact be a ‘game changer’ in terms of altering momentum in a field battle. For dramatic effect alone – and psychology is important on the battlefield – it has it’s uses.

IF they every fixed it…good lord. I’d be a happy man.

Ranger Bug List

Just a couple notes for some Ranger bugs with associated video, from a post in another thread.

The Auto-attack for Longbow is such that it’s damage scales up with distance to the target. Eagle Eye’s added range is bugged in that auto-attacking does not work between 1200 and 1500. See that bug demonstrated here.

I’m not sure if this next bug is from Eagle Eye or Piercing Arrows to be honest, but the recalculation of the damage due to ‘distance to target’ for the Longbow Auto-attack, is based not on how far away YOU are from said target, but how far the last mobile the arrow passed through is from said target. In other words, it nerfs your damage on the Auto-attack. Badly. See that in action here.

In combination – the lack of LB Auto-attack on the extra range, and the damage nerf from Piercing Arrows – these two effects are a match made in hell. Since you cannot auto-attack at max range, you must continually spam 1…which makes lining up, or not lining up, your targets for Piercing Arrow, more of an issue.

It also makes it possible for an enemy to reduce your damage to a distant target at will – a cannon, an arrow cart etc – simply by standing in front of it. This may make sense from a physics perspective, but it is definitely not desirable.

Axe skill 2, Splitblade, is also bugged, often mentioned but still not fixed…it does not use it’s modified physical damage value for attacks, but only does the unmodified damage and bleed effect

I don’t quite understand how it has been 4 months since the dev post and yet these 3 very basic bugs, not to mention countless others, have not been fixed. I do not thin they have any attention of addressing these issues, our issues, at all, frankly. They have not acknowledged or addressed this issues in a specific way and while I wish it were otherwise, I have seen nothing in recent dev statements to suggest that will change.

Excellent idea – well done!

Greetings all. After reading concerns about the threats of pierce in dungeons, and the desire to have it toggled, I have another suggestion/idea of how it could be managed. A functional item could be made to fit in the unavailable offhand weapon slot when the bow is equipped: arrow heads. There could be different arrows equipped alongside the bow to determine its firing properties. (Ie. Piercing arrow head, Standard(default) arrow head, Ricochet arrow head (bounce to 3 targets like the axe), or other such arrow head equipment to change the properties of how the longbow arrows behave when they hit their mark.

These could be purchasable items available to all rangers over time (In all likelihood you’d start with a default arrow head and have to obtain others through karma purchase or some other method.)

This would probably be the easiest way to default pierce and make room for new traits on our bows whilst still enabling pierce to be “turned on or off” simultaneously.

Now, while arrow heads sound like a generic thing, I’d prefer them to be ranger specific if implemented though. Or at least for the piercing arrow heads to be limited to rangers only. The GW2 statement of what a ranger is made it clear that in addition to the presence of the pet, rangers in this game are supposed to excel at use of bow and arrow.. its pretty disheartening if a thief can use a bow more skillfully/with greater ingenuity than a ranger.

A very firm “No!” to merging Piecing Arrows and Eagle Eye. Here’s why.

The Auto-attack for Longbow is such that it’s damage scales up with distance to the target. Eagle Eye’s added range is bugged in that auto-attacking does not work between 1200 and 1500. See that bug demonstrated here.

Piercing Arrows causes the arrows from all of your bow attacks to hit any targets that happen to be in the path of your arrows, between yourself and your selected target. With Eagle Eye, that’s 1500 of range to work with – you can fit a lot of targets in there. Great right? Well, not exactly.

What Piercing Arrows does due to this bug, is recalculate the damage due to ‘distance to target’ for the Longbow Auto-attack, based not on how far away YOU are from said target, but how far the last mobile the arrow passed through is from said target. In other words, it nerfs your damage on the Auto-attack. Badly. See that in action here.

Since you cannot auto-attack at max range, you must continually spam 1…which makes lining up, or not lining up, your targets for Piercing Arrow, more of an issue. Being unable to choose one or the other only, would not be a good thing under these circumstances.

Even worse, it would make it possible for an enemy to reduce your damage to a distant target at will – a cannon, an arrow cart etc – simply by standing in front of it. This may make sense from a physics perspective, but it is definitely not desirable, especially if you cannot avoid it due to the merging.

What we DO need, are not modifications or additions to the existing skills and powers, but FIXES to the ones we have. Axe skill 2, Splitblade, is another example…it does not use it’s modified physical damage value for attacks, but only does the unmodified damage and bleed effect hugely horrible thing given it represents such a large portion of mainhand 1-handed ranged damage. These two bugs – in fact the majority of the Ranger weapon bugs – are simply absurd, and it is more absurd they still have not been fixed…

Or commented on in what…4 months? I would rather start there, before making changes that would make things worse, not better, because of existing bugs.

Not to mention Axe MH’s only real selling point being the bounce on Axe 1 and the spread on Axe 2. Its our only ranged MH option and 2/3 of it is multi-targetted. Will they nerf it too?

Axe 2 is already nerfed – the skill is broken, it doesn’t do hit damage, only bleed damage. It’s borderline useless.

We should be less worried about this nerf, or about improvements, and more worried about getting our bugs fixed…we have dozens and dozens of straight-up bugs. Not a single person has every played a Ranger as designed, because that ranger does not exist – before anyone can talk about whether Rangers are good enough, ANet actually has to manifest them as intended.

Until they do that, it’s simply not possible to say how good or bad they really are.

I appreciate the effort to be sure – but I would just be happy if they started by fixing the actual bugs, of which there are many. Things like Splitblade’s bugged damage, Entangle’s not using your condition damage value, F2 power causing the pet to run to your target instead of activating where it is when you pressed it and so on.

More than than, I would like – indeed, I would demand – that someone from ANet actually make a statement about the bugs, so we at least know they are aware of them specifically, and whether they plan to fix them. It is not right that we have so many build-breaking bugs but absolutely no idea if they will be fixed, or if ANet even knows about them. Absurd.

Sadly, this is just one of about 40 things that are bugged with ranger skills…forget being fixed, I’d like to see some official statement from ANet that they even acknowledge these bugs. But we won’t get, or a fix sadly.

We might get some new event content though, or something you can buy with gems! Yay!

Was a good series of rounds for us, TC, with BG and SoR…BG is clearly vastly superior to us in some respects, but I think the fights were quite good just the same. Best of luck to Blackgate in their coming T1 battles!

SoR and BG have been fighting eachother for many weeks in this tier, with TC being a recent addition to this rivalry. Last night I was moving to the middle arch between the two towers in the southern end of SoR Borderlands when I ran smack into a group of 10 BG and 10 SoR smashing into eachother…

Needless to say, I died – but I recorded most of the battle that ensued. Not much to look at, but if you are BG or SoR and have been fighting eachother for weeks, or especially if you were at this fight last night (SoR BL, 01/10/13 9:53 PM, middle arch) – then here you go ; enjoy!

how to kill stealth thiefs?

I run a Axe/Warhorn & Longbow, Ranged-Traps condition build,
Entangle as Elite, and after countless hours of play and many many fights against thieves, I’m able to win fights with thieves about 50% of the time…when everything goes right. Which it does not, especially where pets are concerned…

I do think it is the most effective anti-thief build for a Ranger however. Tonight I was able to kill a Thief and Ranger together solo, because things went very well. Having accelerated Endurance regen is believe it or not the key I think when it comes to thieves…staying mobile, causing some of those important attacks to miss, negating some of that crucial damage, makes a huge difference.

Hugely outnumbered in SoR BG, but some great fights nonetheless – was especially fun taking and holding Vale with a force a fraction the size of the opposition’s…this round is anything but boring.

Pet F2 failing to execute?

So I’ve long experienced the situation where you do F2 and your pet runs to your target or executes it’s primary attack instead…which it would be great if they fixed btw…but I had a case yesterday where the pet seemed to execute it’s 2nd or 3rd skills instead.

I’m not 100% sure there is not some other reason why it did that, so I put the video up - is this a F2 fail or was it something else?

As I’ve said before, it’s not about any player’s idea of the Ranger – it’s about ANet’s idea. THAT ranger still has not been manifest, due to the very long list of things which are broken or bugged. Forget fixing them – yes that will take time – but we should at least get some official acknowledgement that these things exist…that would be a start.

Not bad, though I did not see a 1 VS 10. The people you faced were not exactly of high skill – the first 2 didn’t even fight, but ran – and the 3rd person whom you killed twice doesn’t appear to have healed. ET is not terribly good.

Looks like you have a good build however and you obviously play it well, so kudos!

Yes, actually I do.

I could tell you all about it, but that would only serve to help you further cloud the issue. Yes, GW2 is a quality game, very enjoyable and the product of a lot of hard work. None of that changes the facts as they are…and there are things which we have done, which game devs do, which ANet has not and is not doing. A test server is one such thing. I suspect there are others.

I assure you, neither myself nor others who are unhappy with the various issues are ignorant of what has gone into, and continues to go into, Guild Wars 2…but we also are not ignorant of the issues. I can also assure you that ANet is not happy with these issues either…I am absolutely sure they want a quality product and happy, satisfied customers. This is not a case of only 1 thing being true.

In my personal experience, the skill worked consistently and quite well before the patch. Since then, that has not been the case. So no, definitely not overpowered.

I am condition damage based, with about 1500 condition damage…I cannot imagine how awesome Entangle would be if it actually worked as intended. Sadly, I’ll never see it in action, since if something so simple hasn’t been fixed yet, it never will be.

Does our class still need a lot of bug fixes? Yes. Many.

But the two things you call “fails” made me very happy. They are giant leaps forward in the right direction.

I called them fails in the context of the premise of my post, that being, ANet has failed when it comes to realizing the Ranger as designed. Lick Wounds works less often for me now than it used to – I previously had no issue with it’s functionality and use it constantly in WvW.

The signet’s speed buff is fantastic, but the fail is in that they could not even get something a simple as the tooltip right. How closely do you believe things are being surveyed at when something so basic is overlooked? I consider this a fail.

As for the rest, the list of bugs is really extremely long, and some of them are frustratingly simply to fix – at least in theory. My feeling is that our class is not a candidate for serious attention – and it will not be until or unless we make it as important as the parts of this game which DO currently receive that attention.

What I would like to see – at minimum, for me to believe Anet IS serious about Ranger bugs and issues – is an OFFICIAL list of same, with a statement that they acknowledge their specific existence…right now, it’s not only the case that fixes are not done, we do not even know if they are aware or accept the fact of these things being broken. That to me, as a customer, is simply not acceptable.

I find it very useful and extremely effective even in it’s current broken form…if it actually work as advertized…it would be something indeed.

You are right on how it’s effects can be easily neutralized…in practice however, as someone who has used this Elite exclusively through beta and all through release, 50% of the time either due to the player or the situation, it is not removed. Especially when it is used correctly…a well-executed Entangle can be the skill that makes the difference.

entangle is the worst elite skill in the game. It literally does 0 damage to anyone who knows how to remove conditions. Not to mention it has no use other than slow constant bleed damage and immob which can be immediately cleansed out of.

You can accomplish this with the right combination of pets, Warhorn usage, trait setup and rune loadout. 100% uptime is possible by using the above with an initial kick of Rampage as One only…after that, you won’t need to use it again to keep Fury and Might up.
