Attempting to 1v2 an Ele and anything is a mistake…
Yea if you’re bad. I really don’t get this hype about Eles. Unless its a full heal/support ele, then I literally have no problem defeating them. If its full heal, then the fight won’t end because I’d end up killing their teammate and then its 1v1 with the full heal ele which is just kinda boring. I’d likely lose interest before it ends.
Ha, ha. Ok ok, I can see you killing his teammate (all while typing insults), but I run a support build so would stalemate both at best. If I only knew what rune and traits you use, maybe I could kill one of them as well…
Attempting to 1v2 an Ele and anything is a mistake…
Yeah… it does seem like I always loose more points than I win. That’s odd. Maybe this system prevents one from grinding to move up. You need a better than 50% ratio to stay where you are, and a much better ratio to move up. Seems like one would need a 60% w/l ratio to move up and about kitten ratio to stay put.
Edit: Why is fifty-five percent censored?
Just to follow up. I’ve been using this slight variation, and it works quite well.
It’s pretty much the same thing tweaked to handle more direct damage. It is weaker to conditions. I just find thieves and DHs everywhere at the moment. SotW grants un-blockable attacks for its duration.
Condi mesmer is probably your biggest threat, but the unblockable attacks can make quick work of it. Go invisible, pop signet and maul them.

Who wants to start taking bets on whether or not this gets “fixed” before the range bug on hilt bash?
Ha ha, 20 gems says our opponents will continue walking away from Hilt bash until the fire islands freeze over…
Hm, this is neat. I think we should all try to make use of it to see if it is too strong or not.
I really don’t think it is too strong.
It kinda fits into what rangers should do. They are a precision based profession. Not as strong or powerful as warriors or guardians, but possessing the skills to bypass blocks and such. I like it. Regardless, we won’t know if it is too strong without using it.
Ranger is kinda in a blah state this season. We are mostly unnoticed. Guardian, Ele, mes, and thief are taking the spotlight…
…a better strategy is to lasso them with the Druid elite and walk back and forth over Test of Faith. It’s funny.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dodge
Super secret technique to counter traps.
Non sarcastic answer that might be helpful for newer players: Bind your dodge on “v” and now you can dodgejump easily by pressing space and “v” with your thumb. More range and your dodge ignores cripple/chill bullkitten.
Yeah, because you never need to dodge otherwise!
Sounds like a typical thief statement. “Dodge! you should have three or four”
Any half-decent thief would never say that because they are more aware of dodges than anyone else actually. Only people that say it is the ones that try to defend the broken mechanics.
Ha, ha, ha. That’s why all the, eh, good players switch to thief when they see guardians on opposing teams. Gud dodges is the best way to beat DH ????
It’s like internet explored being renamed to Microsoft edge. So much hated associated with it that a new name was required.
…that was because so many developers nicknamed it “Internet Exploder.” Because its adherence to somewhat ambiguously defined W3C standards was, well, not that great.
I was having a similar experience, as a solo queue player, and had to trash the meta Druid build because it is designed for a higher level of team play than I am getting in gold.
I changed it to be over the top in support and healing to try to keep less experienced allies alive, and that has been working really well. Being a mechanical genius on your meta build is not going to work out this season.
Most players have switched to builds to game the system. Either pick a build that excels at destroying weak players on the opposing team, or one that excels at keeping weak players on your team alive. Chances are there are going to be one or two on each team, so take advantage of that. That’s why you see so many DH and Ele.
They are taking advantage of the matchmakers inability to separate new players from more experienced.
I came to the conclusion that the best players are stuck in Bronze. Because matchmaking is broken and all the good players lose all their games and go on massive lose streaks. The odds are always against them and all the games are uncarriable.
So I think the best players are in bronze around 300-900 MMR range is the best range for maximum MLG skill potential.
Im looking at the leaderboards right now and it dosent mean anything litereally every1 from rank 1 to rank 100 is just bad and somehow magically appeared on the leaderboard.
So yea I agree with every1 here who complained about matchmaking its just plain broken. Bronze players are the best players.
This just comes off arrogant and childish. There are some very good players in bronze and silver. My secondary account is new and got seeded in t2 bronze. It is now in t3 silver after about 30 or so games so I’ve had a chance to play all 3 leagues this season.
I am seeing a mix of beginners and skilled players in bronze, silver, and gold. Your post is degenerate. I am seeing more skill and different play styles in the higher leagues, in general, but not always.
Regardless of where you are seeded, I too think the range should be narrowed a bit. Maybe add another 30s to the queue time to try to find players within a smaller range.
It’s hard to say if that is the issue, it really may be that too many “pro-ish” players have smurf accounts which are throwing everything off. It would stink if half the accounts in the top 250 are smurfs…
Hey Nila, thanks for reposting. I really am looking for something like this. I’ll need to study a bit because I am less than great with LB, but this is exciting. Anything you can add will be helpful! Thanks!
Ah nope. I just use a slight variation of the Bunker. HoT and subsequent balance-for-non-versatility-patches locked us into Mender’s Amulet, Nature Magic, Not Glyphs, and Beastmastery.
You can run many slight variations of cookie cutter, but anything too far outside the norm is… weak.
Warhorn instead of Dagger
Guard instead of Signet of Restoration
Both might sigils on both weapon sets
Leadership Runes
Warhorn Traited
Better in group, not so great in 1v1, but in Gold right now… 80% of players can’t 1v1 so group support is better (maybe?).
I demand to see these people that allegedly enjoy Skyhammer. Preferably in a dark and discrete location.
Ha ha, I picture you in a leather jacket and brandishing brass knuckles…
But now that you mention it…I’ve played The Purgatory of Foefire more than 2000 times I think. ANET says it’s my favorite map, but it’s not. I just get stuck on it all the time cause everyone wants it.
^ Right. The other maps have some mechanics that more experienced players can take advantage of. At the same time, it also protects some of those same players from the #TotalFail the occurs in Foefire with newer players that try…say splitting home and far as an opening strategy.
Can you kitten stop complaining about the loot in pvp? Pvp was unrewarding as kitten before the patch, those rewards are important for pure pvp players
who cares if pve noobs are playing pvp for loot only? If you are better than them you won’t face them anyway if you are not you are facing them then it’s where you belong to so stop complaining about too good rewards in pvp lol?
For us pure pvp players it’s more difficult to make gold and get ascended equipment so please stop complainingIf u r a pure spvp player then gear shouldnt mean anything for u))) bcs on spvp u get all for free) and if u want gear go and farm gold in pve or wvwvw.
Sometime it is nice, to try something new – but when i go into fractals/raids, they ust ask for my equip – and yeah, since i am most of the time in PvP … yeah…
And because of the missing equip, i go back into PvP and my guild into raids/fractals without me
Thats the different between being a pvp or pve player, so if u want pve raids\fractas etc go and pve farm not pvp farm for pve farm its os bad idea =/
It would be like getting PVP gear at pve fractals etc.
OR, we could just remove ascended PvE gear from fractals and raids and make it so you need to rely of dropping gear into the mystic toilet in the hopes it bestows gear on you… that would be swell. I don’t see why PvE players should have nice gear just for playing the content.
Oh come on. Toothless just wanted to lick your wounds… It’s not his fault his mouth if full of sharp teeth…
Ranger shares many of his traits with his pet. You really lost the fight when you downed the ranger, but have too little health to deal with the pet. The pet carries about 20% of what the Ranger has.
That being said, it’s not RNG. The pet has an activated attack (which usually hits hard) and a special pet attack, this can be powerful and is the first thing the pet tries to do when you swap to it. So… if you down the ranger, watch for when he swaps his pet. The chances are the first thing it does will hit you hard. If you survive that, you have to then deal with the activated ability.
But, don’t worry. Chances are every time you press your buttons you are dealing 2-3 times as much damage as ranger does. Ranger’s unmodified attacks are weakest in game.
No, no, no, no, NO!!! Please, never do any kind of MMR reset in the future.
All the trolls that get dropped to bottom tier bronze for raging and going afk at the keyboard will get to compete at a normal rating again.
These trolls should have to slime their way back up, by winning, before ANET makes us play with them again.

^This. I really think these people must be trolling. It’s very nasty to advocate less rewards for those of us who love PvP and pretty much do it exclusively. This is like going into the fractals forum and advocating they remove ascended ring and chest drops… because too many noobs are joining pug groups and ruining the “experience.”

…it is possible the the matchmaker has been reverted to the S2 design, where it puts all the highest rated players from the pool on one team against all the lowest rated! I am calling it now. This is what they did!
This must be the most effective way to make sure the best players rise to the top.
(edited by Archon.6480)
I always vote for skyhammer when its available, to troll. So I am one of those people OP talks about, we are many, and u will play skyhammer whether u want to or not.
Ha, ha. But the joke is on you if you pick it to troll and go against someone who has mastered the map and destroys you. Mua hahahahaha!
I like the current implementation. The mixed population is more of a matchmaking issue than a loot issue. I think quite a few newer players are getting into silver/gold matches, and probably shouldn’t be. That’s all. The loot is great. I love getting gold and stuff for PvP. It’s about time.
Before it was included in ranked, i was against skyhammer – but i changed my mind, because in ranked people take skyhammer more serious and i start really loving it
I hate to admit it, but it became a great ranked map… (and i really hated it when it was just part of unranked, after the update)
I agree. This map is awesome for Ranked, when skilled players are using it. The sky hammer mechanic is sweet, and can really change the momentum when used at the right time. The terrain at B can make for some exciting fights.
Hm, that looks like the season 2 algorithm where the matchmaker stacked teams. Maybe it is pulling from the queue of available players and placing all highs on one team and lows on another. That would explain how it accurately found the best, top 20, players.
This would explain why queuing off hours can be punishing…
I just had a long discussion about this, my last 4 losses were due to my team mates having never played PvP before this season and only joining the games for the easy armors. Some of them tell me they will stop playing once they are geared.
I think it’s great PvE players are trying out PvP. The problem is that the matchmaker is doing a poor job at dividing up the lower ranks according to skill. I really think the matchmaker is sacrificing match quarity for queue time.
Well, that’s the one thread you won’t find on the PvP forum. I wonder why that is?
I can tell you one thing. As a slippery support Druid, I love to pair up with a good Engi. All my troubles disappear.
The power of the Engi is only for a few elite to realize. No they don’t need a nerf. Yes I love them.
Yeah, but what if you are a scrub and don’t have to face Team PZ during your placement matches? Then you can win a bunch and get a high rating. A good player faces Team PZ players, looses and ends up with low rating. Doesn’t seem fair.
Well think about it. The matchmaker is throwing games together in 20-60s. It’s like it is not even trying to find players with similar skill. The most balanced matches in the past had about a 4-8 minute queue. Eithe the matchmaker got much smarter, or the thresholds were lowered to non-existence.
Either way, the skills required this season are more about “How to win in mixed skill group,” than how to actually play a balanced game of conquest. Overall I think my gameplay is improving though. I’ve learned a lot about Druid support, for sure.
:) Are you humble-bragging?
Seriously, though. You have 3 accounts, one of which has 86 games played in 5 days. I don’t think you qualify as average. I would think 20-25 games, total, by now would be average competitive. Your mechanical knowledge is through the roof by now.
@Saiyan, I am having a similar experience with the points. Now it is pretty much 12pts per win and -13 per loss. Sometimes I get 14 for a good win.
I’ve been crawling up in T1 gold all along. I started out with 30 point swings in the beginning. I can’t make heads or tails of the system though. About 1 in 5 matches make sense for skill composition.
Great queue times, but mostly unbalanced teams. I can win with garbage cheese build played poorly and lose with meta build played nearly flawlessly.
^Exactly. Many players in Silver and Gold have several thousand games under their belt. You need more experience.
Also, you should learn another class, in addition to thief, if you are going to solo queue. Your team composition has no healer and no support. Just damage dealers and bruisers. It’s a really bad composition which explains the stomping.
General rule of thumb is one support per damage dealer. Swapping to Druid or Ele would have really helped your team. Even a support class swap to Engi or maybe DH.
Yes, it is….
….also i had one of my rating games against 3 rangers, no ranger in my team, i lost because it was my fault
Ha ha, 3 rangers…. That sounds pretty weak, to be honest.
A lot of bad players queing t3 silver and t1 gold. Once you get to t3 gold youll start winning most all your matches. Once I made it there I’m winning 13 of every 15 games.
Oh that’s good to hear. I am hoping for that. I am really getting better at supporting allies on Druid, for sure. But there really is an odd mix of players in Gold. Some are really, really new. It’s kind of depressing at times, to be honest. I’d say 1 in 5 games are nail biting awesome. The other 4 are slaughter-fests.
I even started playing Mesmer more. That class does really well with/against newer players.
Well, one thing is for sure, it seems the system accurately found the top 20 or so players. There is no denying that. That’s a feat in itself.
Eh, I don’t think so. The system is barely functioning. How can a loss to the top 10 players results in a point loss, when you are at a lower rating? How could that system ever sort players by skill, in descending order?
If a 9 skill looses to a 10, he should stay at 9. Why does it make sense for 10 to beat 9, thus making 9 loose points and become the new 8? The old 8 does nothing to become the new 9. This is silly. The system will not work right with those metrics. All it does is shuffle players, once placement has ended. If you keep winning consecutive matches you will get shuffled towards the top… assuming you don’t get pitted against top players.
For it to accurately sort players by skill, many wins and losses should result in little to no rating change. Your rating should only change a lot when going against players in your range, and loosing or winning.
You can pull it off a lot easier on non-Foefire maps. Temple has a nearly direct line of sight between the two and mid doesn’t cut off reinforcements at all.
Agreed that can work really well on Temple.
That strategy (anti-pattern) is easy to beat. They can simply leave a bunker/bruiser on mid and send 3 home, for 4v3 on their home, or send 3 far for a 3v2 on your home.
Either way, you gave them 2 easy ways to create a +1 situation in their favor. Their home defender simply needs to peel away and head to mid if they decide to go to your home.
That being said, I won one of those games today in gold. The 2man team had some sort of bunker guard that was holding 3 noobs at bay on middle. Whatever, I was running LB zerk Ranger and mowing everything down cause I got angry at playing in Gold. The level of play in gold is so pitiful, you can play how you want and win anyway. It doesn’t really matter what you do.
You can also do everything right and loose. Just smile and have fun. Gold is full of a mixture of really skilled players, and complete beginners at the moment.
Can you auto-boot people who sit idle for more than a certain timeframe in Ranked?
And if same player has a bunch of Idle/Match Manipulation reports, deduct like 200 pts from their rating? They should all be sub-bronze for doing that.
I’m excited to finally have MMR out in the open. We can get some great community feedback like what professions dominate which skill ratings to better handle player perception. We have metrics like this internally, but its super tedious to look up the skill rating of every player that gives balance feedback on the forums.
Now all you need to do is show the skill rating of the poster on the PvP forums!
Seriously? That’s the response? I think you are both missing the point. It doesn’t matter that the top players know how to deal with DH, when it is clear more than half the player base doesn’t. Is it really healthy for the game to have 3-7 DH in the majority of games?
DH moves slow, succumbs to boon hate, good ranged attacks, and is outclassed by skill. But it destroys everything that does not take advantage of its weaknesses. The question is: “Does your ability to outplay the opposing team’s DH outweigh your ability to destroy beginners on the opposing team with DH?” Most have decided, for good reason, it is easier to destroy beginners with DH.
(edited by Archon.6480)
It’s not that. The combination of DH and Necro can faceroll stomp a team of mixed skill players. Class balance is messed up.
Ha ha ha, that pretty much sums it up. Lolz.
I strongly disagree with the OP. Achievement points should be award for mastering different aspects of the game. PvP is one aspect of the game and should have ALOT more achievement points awarded for all kinds of different PvP achievements.
In the same way you can get boat loads of AP from repeating dungeons multiple times, completing challenging jump puzzles, or fractals. One should you be able to get AP for PvP. AP is not an exclusive PvE mechanic.
As far as only one person getting AP for reaching first place out of all the PvP players in the world? Well, I think they should be awarded 100 AP for that. And the award should be there every season.
There is absolutely no valid reason to not award such a massive achievement with achievement points. Unless, of course, we agree that achievement points are not about achieving things… which I don’t.
… DH is very strong, that’s obvious. I am pretty sure Rev and Druid will still eat them and I would think hammer scrapper should be able to give them a beat down…
Does DH really own power hammer scrapper? I think not…
OP, reread the notes.
Core Guardian got buffed,
DH Guardian’s traps got a nerf, dh is not effected by the core buff,
Thinking guards got a buff, you died to one, and complained on the forums… You just placebo’d yourself.
This is exactly right. DH got a nerf by replacing the trap daze with slow. Very skilled DH players save the trap activation for mid combat when they can use it to interrupt key skills. Now they can only get a slow out of it, which won’t interrupt a key attack or heal. DH traps are more like instant (or nearly instant) PBAoE Magic bombs. It’s kinda silly to call them traps. They are rarely used this way.
At the higher skill levels, the trap daze is the bigger threat, as the damage can mostly be avoided. At least, that’s my experience.
(edited by Archon.6480)
Look as much as i think power rev Rest in Peace…I think we should wait till Tuesday and see what the other changes are going to be…
They might have nerfed power Rev because they might nerf a lot of class defensives. That being said…We are dealing with ANET the King slayer so we might just get nerfs and condi buffs…lol
They already reduced Druid healing by more than 50% so I feel it is justified as is. Especially considering Rev is numero uno threat to Druid. After last patch, a moderately skilled Rev should eat Druid for breakfast.
You need to make a quick decision. I will stay and contest if my team looks good on the other points. If there is a 2v2 or 3v3 going on at the nearest node, that you think might turn into a loss, it’s almost always better to join your allies to turn that around.
It’s generally better to loose one contested point in favor of saving another, along with 2-3 allies. I have this axiom that “The best way to win conquest is to keep your allies alive.” Others may disagree, but if you and your allies stay alive you’ll usually end up capping points as an after-thought and wining the match.
Sometimes the highest scoring player on your team is the worst. Consistently opting to capture uncontested points and winning 1v1 match ups, whilst leaving the rest of the team hopelessly outnumbered.
Many times you’ll notice some of the best players will uncap a point but not stick around to cap it. This is because they know the primary goal is to make sure their teammates are not outnumbered or outmatched.
(edited by Archon.6480)
…hopefully this means the other class’s can now survive without being a bunker, which is currently required to survive the unearthly damage dealt by the GW2 elite class, also known as The Revanant!
The 50% nerf is a bit of a sledge hammer, but I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to loose to a rev in the middle of a good fight because he presses the “I win button” that eats all your health, cc’s you, and makes him evade, all at the same time. Or better yet, you get hit in the back with it while fighting someone else.
Regardless, rev is hard to master, but those who do are game altering. You see R. Heisenberg (or similar caliber) on the opposing team, you better change everything in your build to manage direct damage or its GG.
The change will remove the natural predator to DH and bunker Ele. These things are going to be hard to kill if another predator does not take the stage.
The good news, I am pretty sure Druid can spec into damage now though. Current Rev = rally bot damage Druid.
