Deprioritizing Monetization

I completely agree. One thing that makes me quite uncomfortable is the feeling that everywhere I look I’m being asked for gems, gems and more gems. If you don’t have skill you need money, if you don’t have time you need money, if you want to get a certain skin, you need money. The current approach is excessive and disappointing (In my person opinion) considering the usual MMO approach is: go on an adventure, face a challenge and get rewarded, which is basically being bypassed by anyone with a fat wallet.

I’m not getting your point here. If you don’t have skill or time and you want something, the answer in any other facet of life is to have money.

What it basically boils down to is you either put in the time to grind for what you want or you spend money on it. That is, and always will be, the trade off. Everything in game can be obtained either way. This is not something anet has invented.

What was noticeable in the past is that the world drop rates were low essentially extending that grind. Making gems more attractive for those with spare cash to part with it in the shop. Especially if they didn’t want to wait by doing all that extra grind.

One of my level 80’s (in Orr, iirc, been awhile) tested world mobs out by grinding them to see how they compared with other games and the conclusion I came up with is they were not worth the grind. That was even before people moaned on the forums about drop rates being lowered there, as I was not in-game when they were lowered further.

Not sure what to make of this thread.

The trend was noticeable many months ago, reducing the amount of currency gained from drops was a huge hint.

I’ve not actually played for many months and even I noticed the trend way back then. I also purchased gems from the in game shop as it was a quick way to gain in game currency. Part of the problem with levelling characters too fast with poor world drop rates, without resorting to joining the boss kill trains.

Game with no sub, sounds reasonable until you add in a megaserver.

Even F2P (after initial purchase) is not enough to tempt me back now they’ve gone to megaservers.

Was just looking at this game in the view of maybe coming back to it.

Then I noticed Megaservers.

Been playing ESO (which is on a megaserver), have to say it’s been a poor experience and that’s just looking at the megaserver aspect of it.

Megaservers do nothing for RP they do nothing for fostering an MMO community thanks to all the phasing.

I guess companies choose this option probably because it’s cheap and cheerful. Well not cheerful for the players.

Oh well looks like I’ll have to find something else to play, as I won’t play on any more megaservers.

I don’t like it. As a player I need a challenge. Zerging doesn’t provide that.

I agree it’s not challenging, but having said that there’s no reason it can’t be in-game as well.

I tried one with a new PC, I wasn’t overly keen as before with the old one, I would not be able to see everyone and when the action started I would lag badly. Now with the new one I can see everyone and no lag, but does tend to get my cooling fans a bit excited.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

You sound like a typical PvP player.

Really? Enlighten me.

I actually removed that comment before you posted.

I simply changed the question on you. Would you agree or not that from a WvW player perspective PvE gets more attention in regards to content and textures?

In a lot of games PvE was a main way to level a character.

So the question should be aimed at level 80 character content. So with that in mind I’ll answer.

Achievements are not content they’re just a list of things to do drawn up by the devs to try to keep people occupied.

The 2 week content you referred to earlier I guess is the living story, but to me and lots of other PvE players it offers no content.

Jumping puzzles are limited content, do them once and no real reason to do them again, other than maybe when doing monthly tasks.

Daily/monthly tasks are not content, just a list of things to do drawn up by the devs and randomised.

Hearts (quests) are mainly levelling content so at 80 there’s a lot less to complete, done once and that’s the end of it.

End game PvE content is not great in this game by any means. So do I think PvE gets the best treatment? No, I don’t.

- There are people feeling like they are being coerced to WvW.

That’s my take on it, also why I have 6x 80s at 92% map completion iirc.

If you have 6×80′s and don’t have map complete then you have other issues.

The other 8% are in PvP zones and in this game PvP I found to be crap mainly because of people being invisible and suddenly appearing even elementalists. Although that might not be an issue any longer as I have a new PC, but who knows.

I do have an issue with MMO companies that try to force content on you by game design. Especially as it’s really not necessary in most cases.

Interesting point but this is a glass half full half empty argument for either side (I’m not biased). But let me tilt the argument if you will. Have you ever looked at lets say the WvW only player who feels that the developers solely focus on PvE?

PvE gets bi-weekly (give or take) content updates. They get seasonal content. They get more opportunities for loot and achievement points. Almost everything tilts in the favor of PvE when compared to equal time spent in WvW all things being equal.

Problem with MMOs is there’s 3 types of players, PvPers, PvEers and those that do both (not just GW2).

PvEers don’t want anything to do with PvP (combat) it’s not why they play MMOs. Yet PvPers typically want everyone to PvP. This is also the problem with map completion as they’ve taken the side of the PvPers in the way the maps completed.

Personally where I stand totally depends on the game. GW2 PvE, WoW all 3 types at different times, but generally I’m usually PvE in most MMOs.

Games like Skyrim did really well, because min-maxing wasn’t a thing. Story was a thing.

I actually found Skyrim to be awful to RP, because of the way the stories were linked. Had so many failed characters because at some point the RP fell over due to the story/game design. Never ever managed to complete it once even though I’ve had high level characters, but at some point the game became pointless as the RP was broken and in a single player RP game RP is more important.

WoW, which I consider to be probably the worst thing that ever happened to the RPG community.

In fact, half the problems with Guild Wars 2 can trace their roots back to WoW and games like WoW that trained players to play a certain way and forced design decisions to help those players adapt to this game.

I’ve said much the same thing in the past although without a reference to GW2.

If WoW didn’t exist, I believe more people would be playing MMOs.

I don’t think so, WoW opened up MMOs to a wider player base, its cartoon graphics back in 2005 made it possible for people with lower end systems to play it as it was not as resource hungry as those trying to emulate real worlds (graphically speaking).

It’s not just MMO communities that suffer it’s in the real world too. But then competition for resources is always bad where communities are concerned. Which is why GW2 was promising to start with until they did a U-turn and jumped on the same band wagon as games like WoW.

You play an RPG but you don’t even RP……

I would think that’s true of at least 80% of all MMO players.

People that actually RP the character are a minority. Although there’s also people that RP the role of the character rather than the character itself.

Well its not just GW2 its all games online and or mmorpg its just how they are going to be for a time. GW2 realty is not that bad compared to what came before it its far better then WoW its more flexible then ff11 other mmorpg that have come out after GW2 have all failed to live up to any stander and i do not see ESO going that far and or wildstar.

As for the new content i am loving it they are very hard fights and the story has gotten much deeper but you got to work for it. This is what the old mmorpg had to work for story and read and look to see what is going on. I think GW2 is what you make of it if you can only push though new content it will feel just as because your playing as a means to an end not playing for the fact of playing.

Actually it’s not better than WoW, if it was I’d be playing it atm, instead of WoW.

GW2 is a good game when levelling a character for the first couple of times (starts to get boring after that as it’s just the same missions).

What WoW has going for it is the amount of different content and more people playing but then it’s been out since 2004 USA, 2005 EU.

Living story ruined GW2 for me that coupled with changes to the game so as to make the shop more appealing.

I would like GW2 to be better of course, but so far it’s not happened.

No, it is Jet Li as the star in the film ‘The One’.

The Matrix > The One.

Both are irrelevant to the thread.

Keanu Reeves is the one as in someone special.

Jet Li is the one as in only one left. Multi universe film where one of his others kills all the others except for one. Although technically there are 2 left the good one Jet Li character and the bad one.

Of course there was also the highlanders films, where only one would prevail.

Still irrelevant to the topic (although not the title), so I’ll stop there.

Why can't I see some nerfs in patch notes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If people can’t tell the difference between fixing exploits and nerfs, that wouldn’t seem to be Anet’s problem.

That said, if Anet made the change, Anet should LIST the change. Whether it’s a nerf or not, why should patch notes be guesswork.

Make a change. List the change.

That’s how it should be.

In my experience companies tend to list bug fixes but not exploits. Probably as they don’t like to make them known more than they are already. Maybe that’s in case something else could be exploited in a similar fashion. Having said that I couldn’t say if they fixed an exploit or not with this change.

Server Population discrepancies?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Azala Yar.7693

Azala Yar.7693

Hey it’s my understanding that currently server populations are a reflections of all accounts created on that server regardless of activity… This is a problem. If I may be so bold as to suggest that a dormancy server be created to hold inactive accounts. Accounts that are 6 months dormant should be moved to the dormancy server. The accounts could probably be compressed to save room, and when the account is reactivated the user will be responsible to choose a new home for the account much the same as when you initially choose a server. This will help our servers to not be burdened with dormant accounts and will help the server population be better representative of the actual active population on the server, rather then all the servers appearing to be equal with “high population.”

You seem to be forgetting, those people that are inactive at the moment are still customers they still have active accounts. Their characters have just as much right on that server as yours do.

I really like this one, I made with 4 toons, it is only hard the 1st time, after you get exactly what you need to do then it gets much more enjoyable.

The worst heart imo, is the one where you need to get insects in a jar then feed the bulls under a timer, it is tedious and if you pick the smallest timer it turns to be incredible hard.

That one is an easy one, there are more ways to skin a cow.

You can /bow to one, sit with one and a couple of other ways, you don’t even need insects.

People asked for content, asked for things to do in order to get that fun the devs said it would’ve be the engine of their game.
People got Ascendant grind. Wich is not required, so it’s basically a big waste of time that could’ve been used to create actual content and solve the problem.

Am i the only one who find this dumb?

People asking for content isn’t necessarily a good thing. I’ve played quite a few MMOs over the years and most of the ideas come from other MMOs. Devs need to be careful which ideas they decide to go with.

Someone is in full exotic and someone else full ascended both with the same profession and build and skill. Who would win in a fight?

If the answer is the one in ascended gear then there is a problem. It would mean, to stay competitive you would have to grind, that wouldn’t be a choice unless of course you chose not to be competitive. Which is what seems to be what the whole argument is about.

The manifesto was a nonbinding document; but many of us were excited and pleased by what it said and implied. So we’re understandably disappointed and unhappy by how certain aspects of the game have veered away from the manifesto.

To coin Douglas Adams: ArenaNet is a bunch of kitten kitten who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.

This. When you see an awesome trailer for a movie but the movie turns out to be really bad (and the cool scenes from the trailer aren’t even in the movie), you feel lied to and betrayed. Same thing here.

Agreed, I’m sure there’s many players and ex-players that feel/felt that way.

But it’s been awhile and it’s not going to change now.

When you make it have a game play difference, the entire subset of achiever gamers, as defined by the Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology, feel that they have to work towards them. Arguing that the tier underneath them is still viable doesn’t have any impact on that psychology.

That’s very true and can be seen very clearly at level 90 in WoW. Although in WoW gear level makes a big difference in combat, so you have to grind just to stay competitive.

Sounds like the stats difference in GW2 is not as great though, question is will that change.

Mmm, no.

Ascended weapons aren’t required for me to fight the Shatterer. I am not wrong on this.

If they make a single bit of difference in how much damage you do, they are no longer prestige items, they are required. Failure to accept the truth doesn’t make it any less true.

Saying you aren’t required to have the highest tier item in the game is like arguing that you don’t have to bother leveling to the cap. The word that sums that up is “stupid”.

That word is most applicable to you. Prove it. If it’s so true and obvious, then site some examples.

Ok, if ascended gear stats make no difference, then why bother having ascended gear?

If they made no difference, they might as well be just skins and if they were just skins there wouldn’t be an argument about them.

So I don’t think there’s anything to worry about. For all I know I’ve been reported a ton of times, as the playstyle described above as being that of a bot is totally familiar to me, lol!

I wouldn’t have said that was necessarily true before WoW.

Trouble with WoW it fostered anti-social behaviour through game design. Which resulted in people becoming more selfish, guilds becoming more insular. It moulded the way people behave in modern MMOs.

I wouldn’t mind betting it also had an effect in real life too.

If it looks like burn out and smells like burn out…

It’s not necessarily burn out, just boredom from doing the same old stuff over and over and over.

I had the same problem in WoW recently, got to the point where all I was doing was grinding for better gear.

And before some bright spark says do what you find interesting. You are forced by the game to jump on the gear grinding tread mill just so that your character can stay competitive.

If two people are level 80 both have the same class and exactly the same skills at using the character but one has full exotics and the other ascended and legendary gear. Who would win in a one to one fight?

Now I don’t know how different the stats are in this game, but in WoW the one with the better gear would win. Which is why people are forced onto the gear grinding tread mill. Gear grinding is not fun, but what you do when not grinding can be which is why people put up with it until they realise the pointlessness of it all.

I want to add another point, I think what helps people keep gold is by doing what a lot of people deem to be boring. People only gather enough for the daily and then they stop. That’s nuts, you should be grabbing everything on the map. I can make 3 gold, per toon, by spending 45 minutes in Cursed Shore. Why? Because I cut down every tree, harvest every plant and mine all the ore. I also kill everything I can because otherwise it would be tedious. If you have multiple toons, leveled toons with decent map completion, there’s absolutely no reason a person couldn’t make 5 gold a day just walking maps….have you seen what green wood logs are currently selling for? 1.5 silver…..

Sounds quite boring and I used to do something like it myself. It’s especially boring if you do it frequently, this game was supposed to be fun.

The crys of the thousands of people that have invested time and ingame currency to get the ascended gear would be massive and a backlash of forum anger would continue and without a doubt playerbase decline.

And it’s that same grind that prevents me from playing this game.

Left WoW because the grind is just completely over the top now. Level 90 characters gear has such a vast range difference in stats that new 90s aren’t really 90s at all in reality other than the level itself. I eventually decided that the whole game was just a repetitive grind and the next expansion (lvl 100) was just going to restart the process probably with an even bigger gear level range for 100s.

Excited? Not at all in relation to the MMOs with the state they’re in. MMOs these days tend to be nothing but a grind, if people want to waste their time grinding for something at the end of the day that’s totally worthless, more power to them.

I’d like to see an MMO like what this was supposed to be before they did a ‘U’ turn.

GW2 promised to be a refreshing change, instead they just jumped on the band wagon and followed other companies with the grind. Grind = less fun but tends to keep people occupied as they’re in pursuit of their useless gear.

It’s called Guild Wars 2 for a reason

>Guild Wars 2 different than Guild Wars 1
>People complain
>Call of Duties or Battlefields all the same
>People complain

Dev’s can’t win.

When I purchased the game, it was already changing although I didn’t know it until I started playing.

Many people would have been in the same boat so to speak. What they purchased and what they thought they were purchasing based on the company’s original plans/ideology was proved to be erroneous.

These dev’s will never win because the trust has been lost, trust being important to any relationship.

I’d never buy another of their games simply for that reason, I couldn’t trust anything they say.
