I have 4 level 80s, ranger and thief being two of them. Rangers only problem is damage. While you wont feel weak, you simply cannot do the damage other classes can do. I found PVE easier with my ranger than I did my thief, and I died less… yet I feel my thief contributed to battle much more even with deaths. For dungeons, both work according to the dungeon. Arah, I would never use my thief. COE, ill only use my thief. the common dungeons like CM and AC both work great.
Thief is the better class to me personally, but if u dont care about raw damage then Ranger may be a better choice for you. Ranger can use more weapon combinations, but I felt I liked all the thieves weapon skills more.

ill be sure to try that! I half agree that ele can be unkillable. My main preference in Ele over Engi is that Ele seems to not have as many problems vs mesmers in WvW as other classes do. I cant tolerate Mes when im thief, but with my Ele they arent a problem. I actually have more problems with guardiansm yet my engi can steamroll most guards (thank you ram head knockdown!)

its not about being new, its about how long it takes people to catch on. People didnt abuse Evasive Arcana until 3 or 4 weeks ago, but the trait was there since Beta. Things change based on how many people use it well it does from there on. Except for warriors, they just keep getting buffed and everyone uses them

I cant believe some of the posts im reading. The elementalist since launch (not beta) has been considered the weakest/ most broken class until recently. Once people figured the elementalist out, it became this great class though the main reason behind that was one ability that just got nerfed. Ele is my original 80 and engi is my most recent, and I will say this…

You will see a lot more Eles than Engis, but most people that play Ele arent that good. Its a class everyone sees as “the mage” when it really doesnt work that way. Theyre either mid ranged warrior/fighters or long distance AOE machines, pick your poison. Ele also requires a lot of micro management to do great. You dont need to be a beast to pve normally, but in dungeons/pvp/wvw it takes skill and practice to use him to his potential.

Engi is different. While the classes are similar on paper, theyre completely different when you play them. Engi suffers from what I call “early ele syndrome” where people are pointing at all these weaknesses and not enough strengths. Ele is a powerful class that doesnt need to go glass cannon to do damage. Youre never going to be a BS thief or knockdown/100B warrior, but instant burst damage isnt everything. What makes the Engi so powerful is how he can survive and his damage per action, especially with the chain lightning build ive fallin in love with. With that said, Chain lightning build (which just popped up recently) has SERIOUS burst damage even without a glass cannon build, and I am intrigued to see what people do with it with revamping.

Ele is my fav class (tied with thief, cant decide) but Engi is right up there with them, and I havent put anywhere near as much time in with it. The potential for the Engi is ridiculous, I truly doubt there will be more nerfs, just buffs.

or is it too late..? Ive tried a lot of different builds with thief except probably a good d/d one. I thought s/d wasnt popular so ive been running it awhile but the cnd reduction just sucks. I usually play WvW anyway, but thats where the DD reduction hurts. I always felt DD was a bit OP, but 50% made the attack worthless. so with a worthless 4, and a near worthless (though ive found it more helpful than others) 3… whats left for me to do? I have other 80s but I roll with the thief like my life depends on it. Close to getting Bolt, and im happy I didnt because I feel like the sword is worthless or close to it now. Help me evolve as a player… and guide me o wise ones. Whats a good D/D and whatever build. or anything. I dont want to go back to Ele this is my home

Is it just me or has something… changed. I feel like im becoming visible quicker or something I cant quite explain it.

Only thing I dont know is what to do with equipment. Trying to decide if I want to put full power/tough/vit or power/crit/vit crests on my trinets…maybe armor too?

wait until you see my next toon! aiming to make him look like Quan Chi. ive decided to try stealth build for now since it looks like its going to get nerfed, ill try it out while I can. After that im def going to try Carrion set up

you dont think so? please explain. id like to make changes that would benefit me. I dont mind being glass cannon, and I dont mind being glass cannon. I was thinking of keeping my build and just rolling daggers instead. Maybe throwing jewels on my trinkets for more vit and toughness. Carrion does sound good tho

im SUPER squishy lol! But from doing dungeons for so long ive gotten good with the s/d 3 and I rarely get hit… I dunno. I feel like everything I do, I could do with d/d kinda. That carrion idea sounds very interesting I may give that a whirl as well! any other ideas?

im also considering keeping my build and just adding jewels for some health and defense. hmmm

I dont need to be a glass cannon… im willing to redo all my gear and such, doesnt bother me. I use P/P now and then its ok I prefer p/d.

My Thief became my main PVE toon for awhile, and recently I got into WvW and love it. Originally I didnt like it but its grown on me. My thief is full zerker, only 10k and has been using s/p and sb forever. Recently started using s/d and I like that too, never really got into dual dags. Prob gonna be a follower and try D/D if a build catches my interest… so whats out there? I tried looking at the forums but I see more people crying and complaining than anything else :\ thanks!

Nope im open to anything. Id really like to use a spirit weapon build if theres a good one out there. Also id prefer a more dungeon friendly build

So ive been using my thief forever and have my guardian in the backseat collecting dust. I wanna break him out again, but Id like a little direction. I was thinking maybe a spirit weapon build if that is at all viable… ive never actually seen one. anyway, suggestions please!

its not a charging sigil though. its 10 more damage to enemies in that dungeon, and a 5 damage in general

so ive decided to have a seperate set of weapons just for dungeons, that can constanly rotate sigils since theyre cheap anyway. My question is this… will a superior dungeon sigil (10% damage to whatever) and a superior force rune stack?

I just got this dagger and it has red energy running through it like a CoE dungeon weapon. I also have mystic sword and mystic bow and they are blue…im curiou why this weapon is red?

you know, sword and dagger might be perfect… I didnt think of that

for dungeons, is it worth it to use Dual pistols just for unload on bosses? I run CoE a lot and its boss fight after boss fight… I usually melee with sword and pistol for these fights as shortbow and p/d dont really do enough for my liking against single enemy. I havent tried 2 pistols in awhile so im just curious how it is before I jus go and buy one. Sorry for terrible typing I just woke up lol… tx

Magg is dead in the lava… is there anyway to reset this? hes dead and we cant res him… just loving his lava bath…what do we do..?

everytime ive went to the zone there was an event to clear out the area and I would walk right on in… but now there isnt. Im with a party of people and we’re all stumped… the doors are closed and im a bit dumb. thanks

I actually dont like the SB in PVE or in WvW. It does help in WvW as its easy to use and good AoE, but I find pistol/dagger to be superior in most situations.

Im a fan of being able to reset trait points, it allows us to customize and explore, however I think it would be better to limit the amount of resetting a character can do. This will make people create more than one character of the same class to mix things up. Maybe im wrong but I feel this is a huge reason why Diablo 2 lasted so long.
