You were saying that minions become a liability, you can easily burst down a thief with the above combo, big parts of which are based on minion CC, and also using minions allows you to go full Soldier gear while retaining the burst; something you can’t do with any other utility.

Indeed, I suggested that the minions would become a liability since they’d stand around dumbfounded offering the thief free CnD opportunities. How exactly is rigor mortis going to benefit you against a stealthed opponent? Even if you’ve got the thief pinned in stealth your minions aren’t going to suddenly start hitting him. You’d be whacking away at him alone with your utility slots effectively wasted.

You seem to be living in a dream world here.

And apparently you live in a world where everything else always functions perfectly except minions. I mean the fact that minions are the sole reason you lose to thieves is quite impressive. I must say that the fact that you never miss with a single corruption skill or always have people stand inside your wells, and never see a missed CD with your elites is quite impressive.

I mean the fact that every single other skill we have is perfectly viable, and all minions due 100 percent of the time is nothing but watch you die is totally a fact. Thank you for bringing to our attention that minions do nothing and every other skill we have works perfectly.

Your world is so much more fascinating.

Looking for a Power build for WvW

So I have berserk gear going right now. Power>Precision>Critical Damage. I’m looking for a WvW build that is good for small scale battles and big scale battles. I’m looking to do a lot of damage and support the team. Any help is appreciated!

A lot of damage and team support are not the same thing. You have to choose one or the other.

For wvwvw damage in a small scale, take a look at kitteno’s Zerker build or takarazuka’s power build. If you are looking for something little more beefy and Hybrid – Talentless and nemesis have some great hybrid builds.

If you are looking for a more support build, Del Onasi and Nay of the Ether are two of the best, and i think Nemesis has one out right now as well.

Personally I just run Minions in WvWvW small 5-10 man fights and they are fine. Than when I see a zerg, I swap to staff and just send in the Bone minions and Flesh Golem to die.

Dark Pact, Wail of Doom, Charge, Rigor Mortis, and Doom. If he’s still alive by the end of that then you messed up somewhere and it’s your fault you lost.

Little bit overboard on the your fault part :P. Someone needs to get some more sleep.

Other than that, the abilities he stated are really strong against them, though he forgot that after doom or rigor mortis you immediately hit DS than life transfer as they will be stealthing soon, and channelled skills follow stealth.

3) Any thief

Stealth bugs minion behavior like nothing else and thieves can repeatedly abuse them for easy CnD. Against a good thief minions quickly become a liability.

I faced a really good D/D thief who tried to use this bug. It’s a little overblown. Plus it only resets if they flee the scene. I killed the thief a few times before he realized it was much better if he used stealth escaped than came back and killed me just before the ooc heal hit.

Now Mesmer’s bug out Minions like crazy. Because all their phantasms can hit the minion and if the stealth hits they tehn turn and attack the phantasms.

Yeah bas, problem is that I played 30 minutes and in that span half my minions stopped attacking in at least 6 different occasions(fights)>

Be it large or small, the pool size of testing really doesn’t matter. If it doesn’t work consistently all the time, its broken. Its the same for any skill or any attack, if it does not act the same way every time, it cannot be relied upon.

I apologize I didn’t realize empirical evidence can be caluclated within 30 minutes. Heck, I spent 30 minutes reading about video editing. I now know everything about video editing so when i do it it’s absolutely positively correct right. Anything I say about those 30 minutes is true across the board with all video editing. See the problem with that method of collection?

No utility works perfectly all the time. Minions function more often than Corrupt boon, epidemic, signets, Spectral Grasp and Dark Path. The issue is more with the fact that any aoe can essentially kill them in tournament play. It’s baffling because in Dungeons, my minions will survive most aoe that is not boss aoe, but they go into pvp and one single shatter will kill them all.

I agree that it’s not a perfect system. I am not sure where you seem to get me explaining there are bigger issues is me saying all minions are perfect? They aren’t and a few simple fixes is all that’s needed, but the current AI is not game breaking. Corrupt Boon and Epidemic screwing up with no reason is game breaking. Having Spectral Grasp and Dark Path miss is game breaking. Watching LB completely miss someone because it doesn’t follow is game breaking.

I can guarantee you, that if you and I spent a few hours using Minions together, you would notice that your claim of BROKEN AI is overblown.

The guy asked if is minion AI would still be bugged next patch. Bhawb said they aren’t, and you backed him.

They are bugged. Be it 10% like you think, or sometime 50% like I think.

This is a coding issue and I really wonder how you can be “again” resolving that.

I’m really not following you right now Bas.

Let me try and break it down a bit more for you.

Spectral Walk misses with no reason or explanation. Death Shroud you can get knocked out of if you hit it at the same time as a knockback happens. Corrupt Boon will sometimes do nothing at all, but sit on CD.

Epidemic will do a los miss if your feet don’t see the feet of the opponent you are casting it at. Wells have a cast time (small, but still long enough for people to dodge out of it).

We have exaggerated cast times that create huge disadvantages in gameplay where a majority of ranged have instant casts.

Minions die to an AOE storm instantly which means my entire survival is skunked for at least 30 seconds.

These are issues.

Minions have a 10 percent malfunction is not an issue. It’s an annoyance, that is remedied and minimalized over time played as an MM.

I am currently spending Traits on second line, I believe it’s something about condition.
I’ve heard about power and condition necros, what would you suggest?
And also I can switch between two weapon sets (`)

At your level it does not matter. Just pickup the best weapon available and test out all the cool traits. Once you get to 40 and 60 you can specialize!

2.not always they do have alot of stats you have to be prepared for them to turn there boons into conditions

Guardians are a cake walk for minions. I ignore their boons and just let me pets hammer away at them. Kite them around, and use boon stripping to slowly wittle them down. They don’t do anywhere close to enough damage to kill your minions, and if you time your Bone minion poison to their heal than strip and fear you can immobilize and kill them off pretty quickly.

If you run Minions you can transfer boons to conditions :P. As a minion mancer you should be running Axe/Focus or Dagger/WH and STaff or some variation of that group.

You will soon be able to carry two different weapon sets. No matter what always carry a staff secondary. It’s too valuable and awesome.

Dagger/Warhorn for quick map travel. If you spec into heal on hit Warhorn 5 is mmmmm.

Dagger/Dagger if you are finding yourself dying to conditions (shouldn’t really in pve)

Dagger/Focus is really nice because you get regen on Focus 4 and vuln stacking.

What a lot of necros do while leveling is carry Dagger/Warhorn and then just focus on their secondary than swap when in a fight from Warhorn to focus offhand and use the vuln stack and regen.

Just limit one class per team already!

In a perfect world this is not a good idea. If there were multiple viable roles per class it would kill certain specs. For example, everyone “needs” a bunker guard, so if this was put into place any sort of triple med or symbol guard would be killed off just for the fact that bunker guards are more important. Same with engis. Rifle engis perform a different “role” than condi engis. Even though they work very well together, implementing this is just a recipe for making rifle invalid.

Honestly the problem comes down to eles and AOE healing. They complement each others’ sustain so much that it becomes almost insurmountable against a lot of comps. THAT is a problem and specifically a problem with tpvp and GW2’s attrition based combat.

^uh guardians can heal their teammates and give them boons too, and be better at point defending. It’s a tradeoff for mobility, which they don’t reaaally need as point defenders as much since they’re good at that job and it’s very important in tPVP. Eles before were not in a good place, but now they really are. Try playing one.

I know how a guardian plays. I understand they give their team heals and boons, however it’s not nearly as game-changing stacking 2 bunker guards because they don’t give nearly as much healing and AoE protection as eles give each other. That and they serve different purposes.

And furthermore I was using the idea of having a DPS guard and bunker guard as an example as to why it’s a bad idea in general to limit classes to just one per team. Instead, the problem continues to be multiple DPS classes with large amounts of sustain, AKA eles. Their AoE healing and protection gives them a unique place in that they can continually stack might/protection/healing/CC which complements each other in ways that no other class can do. THAT is the problem, not multiple of anything else.

It’s an ad hoc solution that does far more harm than good for the game as a whole.

Bingo, and this is why somone told me to talk to you about Engineers :P. We were doing a podcast, and they said, Ostricheggs is the man in tournament play that everyone likes.

Btw, my minion builds were effective against bunkers before your crazy HGH builds started showing up in tournaments.

yea took me a while to realize that we shine more in team fights with conditions that trully melt away great numbers of enemys but that dosent mean you are permanently in team fights and as for minions no mater waht built u are most clases have good aoe and easely take u down or your minions witch are verry weak even with traits and the second thing is its depresing u have to switch from necro to another class just to combat some enemyes

The only classes that really wreck MM are specific builds

1) Grenade engineers
2) Shatter Mesmers
3) Trap Rangers
4) Burst Ele’s
5) Smart Epidemic spread Necro

Those builds wreck MM, The following builds we are strong against

1) BM Ranger
2) Any Guardian
3) Any thief
4) Any engineer that isn’t grenades
5) necro’s that don’t use epidemic correctly
6) Warriors (but everyone is currently good against them)
5) Bunker Guardians

Guardian’s are the worst. With Warriors, at least you can use different variations of the weapons thy can use.

Guardian GS/Hammer while leveling is gather a group hit 5/3/2 weapon swap 2/1/4 use virtue 4 or 2 depending on health and repeat. It’s monotonous and brutally boring.

Warrior in dungeons to me is the most boring game play out there. It’s all GS spam.

tPvp build suggestion

tbh: Necromancers are at the low end of the viable classes, though it’s very easy to play …

Disagree that playing necro well in tPvP is easy, but that is a different debate for a different time.

To the OP:

Search these forums for Khalifahaze’s D/D build. It gives you a great introduction to Power Necro and learning to play that build will take your skill level a long way quickly. Be prepared to die a lot when you start, but if you get decent with it you will have double digit kills in tPvP often. I believe there is also a Terror build that Khalifa posted in there somewhere that can introduce you to that concept, so you can learn 2 ways.

I prefer D/WH with spectral grasp over D/D with Spectral Walk :P. They are both awesome but D/WH has a bit more damage and healing depending on build, while D/D with Walk is a bit better for survival :P.

ranger pets run back and duno the mechaninc but come back rly fast with full health

as for improving our survival ?in pvp for example vs a skilled player there just a nuisance nothing more and a postponed death sentance + respawn to the nearest point ,true there usefull vs some tipes of builts of other clases but those are rare cases and far between

Class defining skill versus utility. Despite the little intro that Anet says, minions are not our Necro thing. We are a condition manipulation class that has the option of using our utilities for Minions.

Against a skilled player Minions can win depending on the build the player is playing and whether they are better than me. In team fights, which is where the Necro is strongest the MM is ridiculously effective. Bone Minion Explosions, Flesh Wurm boom, and Flesh Golem Charge as well as the bone fiend immobilize. Continuous damage plus continuous healing in a team fight = win.

We are not a solo class we are a team class.

When I want to solo against people. I bring a ranger, thief or elementalist. When I want to control a fight and help my team out, I bring the necro. Every single build we have is stronger in a group setting.

Someone today told me that I made an AMATEUR mistake, picking the Necromancer, and I felt like eermm..
On the other side, I’ve read everywhere “build around it” can you explain me what that phrase mean?
Also, your favorite leveling weapon set?

Staff and Dagger but I like power builds, and at lower levels those are the highest damage weapons. Once you get to 40 Scepter starts to shine, and axe really doesn’t take off until 60 when you can utilize minions.

It’s amatuer in that it takes time to learn the class. It’s not loved, because a lot of people don’t understand and can’t play the class well. Elementalist are considered OP in wvwvw and some tournaments. Thieves and Mesmer’s are easier at higher levels.

Warriors, Guardians, and Rangers are snooze fest leveling. The Necromancer is a lot of fun, and very rewarding if you enjoy that playstyle. As a new player you are fine. If you had come from a more explosive class than I would say you might have some work getting used to the slower playstyle. Check out the links I gave, they will help out if you have questions, and SOAC Gaming is here if you start to feel down about the class :P.

List of Small Changes to Improve the Necro

Bone minons could also be much improved if they would path to your current target and explode upon activation of the active skill (like a shattering clone). Then you don’t have to worry about that guy right beside you but 2 units of distance too far from your lagging behind minion.

1. Allowing healing effects (such as regeneration and siphon), to work at 25% effectiveness while in DS. Replace the 25 point minor trait in the blood line with a modifier to make that 50%%.
2. Allow Life force generation to work while in DS at 10% effectiveness. Replace the 25 point minor trait to make this 25%, move the 25 point minor trait to the 5 point minor trait and scrap gluttony.

There you go. If those changes are too strong, scale back the numbers, but there is no reason why you couldn’t start there and work forwards or backwards.

I like this idea. Rennoko – did you see my bunker build in the most recent All-Necro tPvP. It works really well, though I have to find another way to gain healing, and Foot in the Grave is more important than 50 percent CD on DS for bunkering.

Each of these are fantastic ways to get immersed into the spirit of the Necromancer and what they bring to the table.

Ignore the hate. The Necromancer does have a learning curve, but the more you play it the more you will enjoy it or find that maybe it’s not for you.

As for leveling weapons, until 40 just pick up the highest damage one and build around it. Until 40 work on using Death Shroud effectively. Once you get to lvl 40 you start to get gear and abilities that allow you to specialize!

ok the best solution i would think would be to make availeble 2 3 skills for minions that make there mood’ either Agressive or defensive with one atacking the 1 st enemy on sight and one atacking your target as it is now
It would SOLVE ALOT OF trouble MOSTLY IN PVP and it would make minion master a viable built and much much easier

Consider mm clones they atack the 1 st enemy they see why couldn’t necro pets be the same ?

It would add more buttons and it won’t happen. Let’s clear this up Ranger Pets, and Mesmer Clones are class definining skills. Minions are utility skills designed solely as a method of improving your own survival or damage. Clear up your misperception and you will realize they aren’t supposed to be Clones or Pets. We have deathshroud, they have Pet and shatter.

You know what I mean, I don’t know why you turn this around like that ahah! :P

An ability can only land 50% of the time if it depend of the player skill to land it.

But it can’t depend of a coding mistake to land.

That’s 10%(in your opinion) miss caused by a bug!

I am simply pointing out that every single utility has success and failures.

It’s not a bug it’s bad NPC coding. It’s prevalent with every single NPC AI in the game including Mesmer Illusions, guardian spirit weapons, Ranger Spirit Pets, and Ranger pets. I have talked at length with all of these classes, and every single one of them would take something from the Minions.

Ranger spirit pets = horrifyingly bad
Guardian Spirit Weapons = useless
Mesmer Illusions = wonky and the only reason you don’t notice it is because they can get new once to drop the broken one any time.
Ranger Pets = Attack and retreat keys are the only way to get it to work correctly. They still aren’t perfect as when they swap they have to wait two seconds to actually hit a button so their pet can face the fight. Their retreat takes a few seconds to actually call the pet back.

It’s not a Minion issue, it’s Arenanet’s coding for NPC AI. I would have to ask them as to why it’s that way.

Your logic baffles me. Playing more matches as a MM defeats the reality of the situation? I’m sorry, but when was your made up internet ego more relevant to the topic than actual problem at hand? When did this become “I played X amount more than you so the problem isn’t there”?

Minions don’t always attack on 2 auto attacks, or at all in some cases. It isn’t user error, sadly, as much as I wish it was. Minions still have the same old problems as they did months ago, no fix, nothing. This isn’t even a spvp problem, its pve as well. It baffles me how arenanet misses this constantly.

You seem to be an intelligent player, so let me explain this as best I can without sounding condescending.

1). I have never stated Minions were perfect or the best way to do anything. I simply said they work for their intended purpose, and are as functional and effective as every other utility skill we have. Signets are bad, Corruption skills miss and get blocked, wells are easily avoided, and we could go on.

2). 500 tournament games and closing in on 500 hours of MM gameplay = a larger pool of data to collect from. If you notice the players who have spent countless hours as a MM are rarely the ones complaining about it. Hizasul is really the only 100’s of hours of MM that routinely complains about the state of MM, but even he readily admits that it’s the fact that AoE wipes them out that’s the main issue and not the AI.

20 hours of MM experience versus 500 hours of MM Experience is a vast difference in pool of data to judge from. 500 games in Tournament and structured pvp as an MM versus the 10 to 12 out of 1k games you have played as a MM = larger pool of available data.

The larger the pool of available data the better you are able to judge the actual situations that create the issues that MM faces. I have never once stated that their isn’t occassionally a wonky MM issue. I have simply stated that it’s perception over reality. If you play 2 hours, and it bugs out 3 times during those two hours than you will say WHAT A CRAPPY SYSTEM!!! If you continue to play and over a span of 22 hours you see it bug out 4 total times, than you say it need some fixes. When you play 500 hours, and you see a total of 15 total fails, and around 50 Flesh Golem Failures with about 100 Bone Minion bugs. Over 10000 attempts you can see it’s not as bad as the guy who played for 2 hours had 20 attempts and had it but out 5 times.

I have always stated that their are days where the minions don’t react perfectly, and in our Minion AI video we clearly showed that there is anywhere from a 4-6 second delay sometimes on attacks depending on which abilities were used and weapons were used.

If this still baffles you please let me know. I would be glad to explain further how empirical evidence is never arrived at instantly so the more evidence you have the better your view on the subject becomes. I have taken Minions into every single dungeon with success outside of a few bosses, but then every build has situations with certain bosses (conditionmancers with CoF P2, AC p3, and so on)

Epidemic does only work 60 percent of the time. The level of evades, blocks, and misses is ridiculous at the moment. Corrupt boon misses even more.

90 percent of the time = very good.

Lets go try minions out in HotM……Still broken. The aggro fails about 1/3 of the time leaving you with 2-3 minions just standing there.

@Bas I got like 1k of pvp on necro, please, the minion ai is horrible. Its nice that you think 2x attacks solve it, but its not consistent and if its not consistent then its broken.

You got 1k of pvp as an MM. I have 500 as an MM. You have 1k as what a conditionmancer, and that makes you an expert on MM?

Minion AI is the same as every other NPC AI. 2 single auto attacks is the key. Whether that is an intelligent way to play or not is not the question. The question was how do I get them to attack. I don’t like that it works that way, but that’s the way it works.

I used to run a MM build

Back then, we also thought using single target attack would work.

I tested it for 2 weeks in WvW.

If I casted my bones minions before the fights, they would rarely ever attack my target. Even if I pushed and pushed and pushed the auto attack and they just wouldn’t work.

I gotta say I don’t really care about any test that have been done that give different result then me.

That’s a rather difficult way to go through life. The AI issue before the March/February patch where they did an AI improvement patch was awful regularly buggy and routinely had random pathing issues. You seem unwilling to listen to anything but your own advice. If this is the case, why even post.

Write your solution along with the way to properly code it without making it OP to the developing team, if you are as good as you seem to believe you are, they will take it and run with it.

Here is the issue, you tested it months ago before the improvements, while we did extensive testing not even a week ago. Before we did the video both Bhawb and myself did testing for hours to make sure we had a good grasp of AI.

You had 2 weeks of usage. I have 500 games of pvp play coupled with close to 500 hours of MM gameplay in pve and my amazing 300 minutes of WvWvW. I have recorded dungeon’s with me playing MM. It’s on the SOACGaming channel including two MM killing off spider boss (notoriously difficult on MM).

Single Target Attack x 2 works 90 percent of the time for every single minion. There is no variable, no change, no stop unless you get a wonky pathing issue.

You might have something there. When I do map completion, I just mass pull everything around me. Everything. Even if I don’t need that particular NPC for the heart quest I’m doing. Its unusual for me to fight a single NPC at a time. This only happens when there aren’t any other NPCs or they’re to far away for me to grab without the other resetting.

Perhaps having more than one target is whats causing the AI to sometimes break. I do know that when I am fighting a thief in WvW that is constantly stealthing in and out repeatedly, the Flesh Golem will eventually stop doing anything at all. Might be a problem with the reacquisition of targets. However, that still doesn’t explain why sometimes, even if I am only fighting one NPC, the Bone Minions just stand there and do nothing.

It’s a weapon and pathing issue. It’s not a Minion AI issue as it’s not prevalent with every single minion. Flesh Golem and Bone Minions seem to run into the NPC wonky AI more than others.

In my 500 plus pvp games as a MM. I can guarantee you their rate is closer to 90 percent. The problems in pvp is Engineer and burst ele train wreck a full minion build so quickly it’s a joke. Let’s not even get started with talking about how badly they perform against Shatter Mesmers.

Kravick, you fought me, and my minions were on you the whole time except when you disappeared.

We released a video about this, and did basic tests.

We also confirmed several well known issues.

1) Weapons have a huge effect on Minions performance. Staff and Scepter are awful with their Minion responsiveness. Axe Auto and Dagger Auto have the greatest success.

2) Weapon skills with piercing or AOE cause a delayed response on minion action. (Our unproven theory is that this is to help with pulls).

3) Marks seem to have their own world in terms of Minion AI, while Scepter causes the most noticeable issues and we are unsure why since it’s random.

4) Any AoE attack not followed immediately by a single target Auto Attack has a real high probability of bugging out your melee minions.

5) The only way to get constant minion attacks is to use only Single target attacks on an enemy.

6) Another easy way to get a minion to attack is to use a single target attack and then hide behind your minion until they are attacked (there will be delays as they have to identify your target).

7. We also noticed that server response time can create an issue with noticing the responsiveness. Bhawb and I are both west coast and so closer to the main server. I have noticed while playing with an EU player, that while his seems to take longer to respond it has more to do with server communication as they still respond he just doesn’t see it or the server communication is slower.

Each of these are fantastic ways to get immersed into the spirit of the Necromancer and what they bring to the table.

Ignore the hate. The Necromancer does have a learning curve, but the more you play it the more you will enjoy it or find that maybe it’s not for you.

If you will notice, my bunkering skills are borderline atrocious. I never healed before elite even though that’s what you should do, and too many times I let me health stay at 50 percent.

I think you did a good job as a bunker.
But yeah, especially the first engagement of the first game you didn’t clear your conditions as fast as you could have. You got epidemiced twice with a pretty big stack of conditions on you. And I was thinking the whole time: Come on, Bas! Consume Conditions! Putrid Mark! Cmoooooon klick it klickitklickitklickit!! Noooo epidemic xD

I typically run MM or power burst, so I was still learning everything haha. But that bunker build was way more effective than I thought it was going to be. 0/0/20/20/30 is really strong. Next time I am going to run Foot in the Grave instead of reduced cooldown on Death Shroud.

You can start with some life force by summoning flesh golem just before the game starts and then switching it out for plague form.

You can also summon and kill Flesh Wurm a few times before the match starts and then swap to another trait.

Haha, you can! You did great the second game :P. The first game was rough for all of us. It has a lot more to do with time in the class and specifically that build rather than your skill as a Necro.

That’s ridiculous. Some of us do tournaments and structured for fun, and have no desire to be pigeonholed into specific class or Meta setups. I run an all-necro team setup to help other Necro’s learn some tips. Your idea is simply not feasible and would destroy any sort of fun or gimmicky build designed to counter the really strong classes. Double Engi wrecks eles and necros ;p.

huge issue, I couldn’t imagine the queue times, and the amount of setup required to do something like that. It would kill any creativity in team makeups and leave you with ridiculous setups.

You could just do custom tournaments for your setup and leave the standard tournaments the way they are.

The problem with the balance has nothing to do with multiple class setups, but rather with the capture the node style or orb carry that highly favors mobility. Because mobility is such a huge part of the game it kills classes that don’t have easy access to long leaps, rtl, mist form, invulnerabilities and speed boosts. Which is why elementalist with their mobility and sheer amount of knockbacks are so overplayed.

A full Life Force Bar would be a waste of damage, and would make it nearly impossible to kill off a good necro at the start of a fight. We would have access to some of our most powerful skills immediately. However, we should have access to at least creatures (like spirit watch) to kill so we can get at least 10 percent LF. What I typically do is use the Heart of the Mists to build LF so that I have it when I enter the Map.

If you didn’t know that was possible, your LF does not reset during the setup. So you can go out and fight the other team or kill creatures in the Heart of the Mists and then begin the match with LF.

We have always admitted that they need some sort of aoe damage reduction because the sheer amount of aoe in wvwvw is borderline ridiculous.
