Yes, NCSOFT stock has taken a beating since the start of July, down some 18%, down 37% since the start of the year. Even one of their biggest cheerleaders, KDB Daewoo who at one time predicted the price of the stock would reach an absurd 600,000 has dropped it’s target price from 280,000 to 220,000 and is calling for NCSOFT to cough over some increased dividends in a mid July report. Stock is now at 154,500.

This is seen as an indication that they know something about what will be reported later this week (likely this week) about the 2nd quarter numbers. But NCSoft is a company with five major games being the bulk of their income along with Asia being their bulk region for income.

NCSOFT has been stringing along their investors with promises of vast riches to be mined from China’s gaming market. I’m sensing that this isn’t going as well as hyped. Just like the time they suggested that the company would hit over $1 billion USD in sales once B&S and GW2 come out in 2010. They took their surprised success of AION and thought the next two MMOs they had in the pipeline would be just as huge. Silly rabbit …

I’ve always seen Ascended gear as targeting the min/max hard core crowd and not for the general masses. They threw them a bone and made kitten sure it would take a while for them to get it, requiring them to level their crafting and make it themselves. You can’t buy them on the TP or the basic ascended materials, requiring you to get them from certain events. The bar for owning a set is high if you absolutely need the to have the very best gear.

But to the audience the game was originally aimed at, nothing has changed from my PoV. I can get exotics from either the TP for gold or temples for karma.

My characters don’t need to have the penultimate gear for their class. I’m not a PvPer and the times I play WvW I go expecting to be owned since my keyboard/mouse skills aren’t FPS caliber. The smallish boost from ascended gear won’t help survive any better.

And since they haven’t announced either a level increase or yet another level of gear above ascended, I’m content with what I have. To me the whole ascended debacle was a tempest in a teapot.

I have more of a problem with the min/max hard core crowd controlling the bulk of the PUGs for dungeons insisting on specific gear, skill and trait loadouts. It’s like going to a public basketball court and finding out the crowd already there are only letting guys over 6ft or the ball handling skills of Nate Robinson play.

You probably have a 60Hz monitor so your monitor can not even display more than 60 fps.

That only applies if you have v-sync turned on.

No it’s a panel limitation. Most basic LCD monitors using DVI are locked to 60Hz screen refresh. You could blast 120 fps at it but it will only display data every 60th of a second. That’s the whole point of the G-sync circuitry in G-sync monitors, to trigger a refresh on the monitor at the rate the video card is generating each frame.

All VSync does is prevent the video card from switching frames while the data is being streamed to the monitor during a refresh.

Precursors price

I compute the break even point this way.

Using a master/mystic salvage kit I’ve seen an average of 0.825 ectos per salvage attempt. Of course this is level 68 rares or higher.
If the item contains an upgrade, there’s an 80% chance to recover it.

So average 24 hr ecto sell price is 43.3s and the cheapest major rune is 6s and major sigil is 4s. If you are lucky, average mats might add 1s.

So for trinkets and armor/weapons with no upgrades, using the 24hr average ecto sell price of 43.3s and 6s for major rune, 4s for major sigils and 1s for average mats

0.825 × 43.3s + 1 – 0.6 or 36.1s
add 4.8s for armor with a rune or 40.9s
add 3.2s for weapons with sigils or 39.3s

Note since the choice is either selling the mats or the original item, TP fees don’t need to be included in the calculations. However if you are buying rares to salvage you do need to multiply by 0.85 to figure out the max buying price of the “raw materials”. So buying rare armor with runes for more than 34.8s is a loss.

My 0.825 average ecto figure comes from over 1300 salavages that I’ve recorded the number of ectos from each salvage using a master/mystic kit. Also 40% of the time you get nothing but since 15% of the time you get either 2 or 3, evenly split, it raises the average from 0.6 per to 0.825 per.

Setting aside the issue that XP was alive and well when the engine was first developed or that Dx11 compatable hardware is now in the majority of gaming machines. The cost to reengineer the game’s rendering pipeline to maximize the usefulness of Dx11 and multithreading is likely outside the realm of possibility with income of only 80-100 million a year.

WoW had billions of dollars of income over multiple years which allowed them to do both the Dx11 and 64-bit redesign. GW2 haven’t yet broke the billion dollar mark yet, if ever.

New player - need advice

Several things of note Bytemare.

First, nearly all activities give you XP. General exploration, visiting points of interests, vistas, unlocking waypoints, rezzing npcs and players, gathering materials (ore, wood, plants and everyone has their own node of said materials). This is on top of the usual XP from bonking critters on the head and doing what passes as “quests”.

Second, the PvE game is designed around the concept of co-op play. You can’t really kill steal or loot steal. You don’t share a common pool of XP and loot from a critter but if you do some percentage of damage to a critter you get full XP and loot drop if one or five players attacked it. As I said earlier everyone has the ability to rez another player or NPC and all material nodes on the map are instanced per player, so no mad rush to get to it first.

Third, the “quest” system is area based. If you enter an area where a “renown heart” is the task will pop up on the right side of the screen. No need to see someone first and upon finishing it, no need to see someone for the reward. That said completed hearts will turn into vendors that sell items that are tied to the task just done and can include armor, weapons and crafting recipes for “karma”, a currency you get doing hearts. You can find out about hearts in the area by talking to a scout, they are marked on the map with a little spyglass icon.

There are also dynamic events that crop up somewhat randomly which are repeatable. They also pop up on the right side of the screen and also award karma as part of the loot for completing it. Most can be soloed but some are marked as group and often isn’t just a suggestion.

Fourth, there is little need to form formal parties to play in PvE, dungeons are the exception. Most of the time events are like a flash mob with swords. An event pops up and players swarm in, do the event and then scatter. It doesn’t mean you can’t run around with a group of like minded players, just that you don’t have to form a party first.

Fifth, your level will be adjusted downward to match the level of critters in the area, well level +1. It doesn’t go the other way so stay out of areas that are above your level but feel free to rampage through areas that are below your level. And since your level is adjusted you will still get XP and loot but appropriate to your actual level. This way you can always play with friends working on a new character with your level 80 Godling.

Edit: Lets try and get the OP’s name right.

face to face trading

Behellagh.1468

See I don’t have a problem with item for item trading among players in a secure, informed environment. I don’t think this would make a huge impact on either supply or inflation. But I suspect that most who want player 2 player simply wants to avoid the 15% sink buying and selling for gold and that can’t be allowed.

I came from a game where the money supply ballooned out of control due to lack of an economic adviser. Players were actually exceeding the 4 billion currency limits for their character bank and had to become creative how to store their excess currency. Common items that should go for 250-1000, and once did, were going for 50K because it didn’t matter. “Let me buy a McDouble, here’s a $100, keep the change”. Highly desirable items went for BILLIONS. My main character was a pauper with only a few hundred million.

MMO inflation is an ugly and terrible thing. Thank the Gods that ANet keeps a lid on reward rate and have significant sinks. And yes, that previous game had Player to Player trading which avoided the sink in it’s trading house.

Expansion or end of franchise?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Behellagh.1468

I can’t understand why Anet hasn’t released an expansion for GW2. If I were an investor in NCsoft I’d be angry and probably pull my money out because it’s not even ineptitude, it looks like neglect. No good company passes on new revenue and returning customers do they? Then again I haven’t seen the earnings report, maybe they’re making good money with the suckers who think they “support” the game by buying gems and black lion keys. All the seem to be doing is delaying an expansion…if I can make money by creating a few skins and sticking them behind RNG chests, why not?

Since GW2 is only a small part of the company’s total income stream (only 16.3% in 2013), pulling your money out would be silly. You also ignore that only 18% of their income comes from NA/EU. If it wasn’t for GW2, their direct income stream from the west would be minuscule, although some income from the EU may be booked as royalties since they pawned off day to day operations of Aion and Lineage 2 to a 3rd party there.

Well it was in 1stQ of 2014 18.3 of the total profits the NCSoft made. That is a good amount considering Aion and Lineage 1 and 2 are sub games. Who knows what it looks like now that GW2 went live in China, the largest game market in the world.

GW2 is important to NCSoft, if it wasn’t A.net wouldn’t be around.

But the GW2 China income will be booked as Royalties just like B&S China income is and not added to the actual GW2 income figure.

Also the reason I used an entire year is because of seasonal variation between games. Lineage I (38% of NCSOFT’s income in 2013) had a bad 1st quarter (down to 23%) and since South Korea makes up over 94% of it’s player base, events in South Korea, a country the area of Kentucky with 30% more people than California, could significantly impact income (overall income from South Korea dropped 20% year over year). Could be an economic downturn, could be social policy (internet use, especially online gaming, is now lumped in with gambling, drugs and alcohol as an addiction).

Also, not profit, income, big difference. NCSOFT never lists profits of any game, just income booked from the parent company and it’s subsidiaries for each “major” game.

Also GW2 was 14.1% of NCSOFT’s total income in the 1Q14, 18.8% if you exclude royalties which has grown significantly with B&S in China. Royalties in the 1st quarter 2014 exceeded even Lineage 1’s income. Royalties is up over 400% year over year for the 1st quarter. Royalties exceeded NA and EU income combined. Royalties happen when they license a 3rd party to run a game as oppose to an NCSOFT subsidiary.

Now because of GW2’s “new” status in China I can’t see NCSOFT push for an expansion to come out “soon”. Especially that the game was sold in China Vs free. It would really have to be branded for the China market to convince players there to fork over more money upfront.

Most popular MMO is down to 6.8 million players according to the quarterly report this week. But if you’re charging a monthly subscription, you need to release expansions to bring players back as well as keep the existing players interested.

You obviously one of the LS is not content players which is fine but that’s what ANet has decided to do to keep players coming back week after week. So unless revenue dropped significantly from last year, NCSOFT should have it’s quarterly report in the next week, week and a half and that may show motivation for an expansion.

Even if they announce an expansion, I wouldn’t expect to see it for another year.

You have no idea what inflation can be liked in MMO with a poor gold sink. Most of the so call “inflation” is due to the ever changing nature of crafting new and old goods. Shifts in supply and demand can shift the price of an item in either direction. For high demand, minuscule supply items like precursors, it’s the increasing wealth gap that’s driving up the price. We would see the same if the game had an auction system. With a tiny trickle of supply, only the most wealth who wants one will get one.

Also realize if a reward could be farmed if doing X rewarded Y, then players will farm and everyone will have one. Only “fair” way is every X number of hours of play you get a ticket for one precursor of your choice. But then that violates the “casual” nature of this MMO. How many hours of play is “enough” then?

I understand the frustration ever since the first time I saw Twilight being wielded at the Maw a few days after I started 19 months or so ago.

Because it’s one way to keep the TP busy. And since the TP is the primary way to remove excess gold from the world, thus keeping it busy is important.

But there are Dungeons, Fractals and WvW which have their own currencies for exclusive rewards for participation.

And yes precursors are almost mythical as a drop, most are forged using the Mystic Slot Machine, which removes excess items from the world. But that’s “high stakes” play costing as much gold as you can sell them for on the TP.

But if they were easy to get, then they wouldn’t have as much value to us.

How do I level?

Attacking critters that are off the beaten path tend to give more XP. There’s an XP bonus assigned to a critter the longer it survives in the world. Talking 2-3x the XP than one that springs up next to a well traveled path.

Other than that, what zenleto said. Just about everything gives XP including gathering materials, exploring the map, rezzing fallen NPCs and players. And if you tapped out your starting map go to your race’s home city, explore that (meaning find all the points of interest, activate way points and visit vistas, and then take the portal to Lion’s Arch and go to a different race’s home city and do their starter zone. Again, gem store prices are set based on cash value of gems, not gold value. So right now it’s $1.05, $1.13 or $1.57 depending on quantity when they aren’t on sale. This is in line with other grab bag items at other MMOs.

Now occasionally they are on sale or they are bundled in with some other items at a great price. Normally it’s 20% off but last March the 5 packs were 35% off for a day and recently the Rescue Kit included 15 for 1000 gems which is also like 20% off the per price of the 25 pack.

The trick is to buy then and HOLD them until they juice the chests. Sadly I can’t let them sit there unused that long.

Otherwise you farm them at 2 to 3 an hour, not fun in my books but that’s me or pay a lot in gold to convert to gems. Remember, gold converted gems doesn’t pay the devs and the current high price simply makes it more attractive to buy gems with cash for gem store items. But never expect to make out selling either the ticket skins or the contract. It would be better off for you in the long run to either keep the gold or convert cash bought gems into gold and buying those items that way.

Currently it’s 4500g/3688g so the question is do you want to take the “risk” for the extra 690g or take the 3100g? Not quite the Monty Hall problem but it depends on how greedy or are you willing to take the risk. Supply is currently 4. Are players holding on to some waiting for the “right time” to sell? Is going to 5 going to open a flood gate of items undercutting your own? It’s been as high as 6 available over the last 3 days. These are all factors in picking a price to sell it at. Right now there’s a 22% gap between low sell/high bid so flipping can still be in play.

When BLTC only contained random Gem Store stuff they dropped faster and you had a fair chance of getting a key from a chest. Since they added the skee-ball tickets for skins and the occasional really rare item like the contracts, free keys have become scarce and now the BLTC is just like every grab bag in every MMO out there, a means to make a token amount of money off of a lot of people who are playing for a chance of something good from a pile of meh.

Keys will never be a gold only item simply because I expect that they are a significant percentage of overall gem store purchases in terms of total gems spent. Just as ticket skins will never be part of the store as a direct purchase of gems.

However I’m tempted to say, sight unseen on the thread they disavowed every saying that, that the preceding posts from players were stating that it was a vow/promise. The people have long memories.

They really need someone to bullet point what was said in every published interview, press release (print, web or video) and timeline it so they either don’t misstep or they can quickly counter a claim that they said one thing but did another without clarifying it first publicly.

Instead they lied and claimed that their original statement didn’t exist. Look how well that worked out.

Right there. They claimed they didn’t make a statement promising anything so that wasn’t a lie. You claiming otherwise is saying they did make a promise.

Not saying they don’t desperately need a PR person so that they are crystal clear about what they mean. Too often people talk in generalities that others take as specifics. Sound bite mentality.

I say, SHUT DOWN THE FORUMS GW1 did just fine without forums, GW2 can as well, I mean after all “they” do what “they” want irregardless of what the community asks for 98% of the time anyway.

It’s not their job to implement what the vocal members of their community wants. It’s ANet’s game. At the end of the day it’s up to the players to accept it or reject it. Unlike a book or a movie where you can’t ask the creators to change the ending gamers believe it’s in their power to force a game’s creator to change it. While aspects of a game may not be working as intended by the devs and those could be altered, there are parts of their “vision” that will never be changed. If you really dislike those parts, then this isn’t the game for you.

If that was the case, what do you think the prudent thing to do would be? Oh yeah, clearly explain it. They could have preemptively fended off tons of criticism had they done that. I mean, that is if the scenario you outlined were actually what happened, which is highly highly doubtful.

Instead they lied and claimed that their original statement didn’t exist. Look how well that worked out.

Again, an 11 month pre-launch interview stating intent isn’t a promise. They didn’t promise anything. If they didn’t promise then they aren’t going back on said promise and the original statement wasn’t a promise. You read an intent and thought promise.

This is exactly why they don’t talk to us anymore.

@Filaha – If they did everything you suggested in making a reasonably unscamable UI for Player to Player trading and skill took their 15% (or 10% sales tax) if currency is part of the transaction, would that be unacceptable to you?

See I don’t know if the motivation behind this is to avoid the fees and tax or simply trading to specific players at amounts below the current TP level.

“Eurogamer: How are you handling endgame loot – will we be farming bosses?

Colin Johanson: Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base. The rare stuff becomes the really awesome looking armours. It’s all about collecting the unique looking stuff and collecting all the other rare collectable items in the game: armour pieces, potentially different potions – a lot of that is still up in the air and we’ll finalise a lot of those reward systems as we get closer to release. And those come off of things like the bosses at the end of dungeons – the raids."

Best statistical loot = BIS where I come from.

I suspect stuff like this is also part of the reason why Arena.net has backed off on this sort of candid discussion. I mean, read that interview… it’s a candid statement of intent… it’s what they WANTED to do. It wasn’t a promise. It’s what they even TRIED to do.

And then they went live… and it apparently didn’t work. Too many players didn’t buy into it. They wanted that power creep. They wanted that grind. And when they didn’t get it, they quit.

So Arena.net had to change course. It wasn’t a broken promise though, and a lot of the toxicity could have been avoided if players hadn’t twisted intent to make it one. We players ALSO have a responsibility to the environment we fester.

The toxicity doesn’t stem from the change in direction. It stems from the fact that, when ANet announced ascended gear, they denied they ever made this statement in the first place. They claimed ascended gear had always been their intention. Stop trying to blame the players here.

Why can’t it be both? The interview was from 11 months before the game went live. It’s possible that during the beta that it was impressed onto ANet that they needed one last level of gear that players would have to work hard to get and at that point it became part of their plan. It just took them a while to figure out how to add it into the game. Trinkets they simply folded into the FotM system and later Laurels but how long did it take them to fold it into the crafting system, a year or more after the game went live?

See as long as they had plans in place before the game went live, then in their minds it was always planned to be added. They just didn’t say anything until after the game went live to players. The code for even the trinkets and changes to FotM had to be in development well before the game launched (people always underestimate the time required to write and alter software, including programmers). They didn’t launch the game and then decided to change it. It was just added to the plan late and wasn’t in the game at launch.

Marvel has actually sued an MMO company based on character names/likenesses. This was before Disney, known to be aggressive in protecting trademarked characters, came into the picture.

Having policies forbidding IP infringement demonstrates a form of due diligence. It allows them, in court, to say, “we actively discourage infringement,” lowering the chance of a painfully large settlement.

That was City of Heroes and it was due to the flexibility of it’s character creation system and the EULA boilerplate that said all player characters belonged to Cryptic/NCSOFT (so they could use them in screenshots and advertising). Marvel lawyers wanted it to be clear that if you have a huge green guy in purple pants who jumps huge distances and has attacks that include a foot stomp and hand clap, that their Hulk IP isn’t being swiped by some small game developer and it’s Korean partner.

1) In traditional MMOs, raiding a ton of times eventually gets you your BIS gear. Here if you want BIS gear, you have to craft it from mats you gather from boss chest content and leveling your crafting to 500.

2) That’s not true. It’s difficult to PUG dungeons if you aren’t kitted out “correctly”. Not talking about difficulty in doing the dungeon but in getting on a party. Because of that, no I haven’t run all the paths hundreds of times but only a few a couple of times. Longer I play, less likely a PUG will accept me.

WvW: Yes it does resembles pee-wee soccer AKA “crowd ball”. I’ve always thought of it as a massive capture the flag/paintball event.

I used to average pretty close to 20% until they changed the chests to the current method. Currently i’m 0 for 10 on scraps since the chests changed.

That’s why I was curious to start this thread. When people say “RNG is RNG” it ignores the fact that RNG is based on coding which may not exclusively be RNG.

When RNG is RNG they mean you have to do your analysis with knowledge of the distribution that RNG results have.

Looking at FearedbytheGods results of 19 scraps out of 50 chests does lend support that they doubled the odds of getting a scrap because the odds players often quote is 1 in 5 for a scrap. To be specific with a 40% chance fro a scrap, 19 is a 11.09% outcome and 20, the “expected” total, is a 11.46% outcome. If it was still a 20% chance then 19 out of 50 is only a 0.16% outcome.

A full ticket is a lot harder to tell. If a full ticket drops at 1/10th the rate of a scrap, then we are talking 4% versus 2%. The chance of 0, 1 and 2 out of 50 with the odds at 2% is 36.42%, 37.16%, 18.58% while with the odds at 4% they are 12.99%. 27.06%, 27.62%. There isn’t enough trials to tell.

As I said in a different thread, they should have at least all the bridges and roads fixed. Also the most badly damaged/destroyed buildings should have been torn down while repairs should have started on the less damage ones. We should see Charr mobile fortresses and gun emplacements set up for defense.

lol i already thought it was crap without knowing the stuff was cheaper to buy individually. that just makes it worse.

But it’s not cheaper. If Utility Primers are just as expensive as Metabolic Primers, 5 for 550 all, then you might be saving 100 gems overall, if you wanted all the stuff to begin with. I priced the rest of the stuff in an earlier post.

How to run gw2 in high graphics

Which is why I suggested the eVGA, at least the ones with a single fan. Visual inspection on NewEgg shows that there isn’t a power connector on those and they do list a 300 watt minimum PSU unlike others that do have a power connector.

So either the GTX 750 1GB -2751 or -2753 or the GTX 750 Ti 2GB -3751 or -3753, all without a power connector. I would personally lean toward the -2751 or -3751 as they are the non overclocked ones. Heck, I would go with the GTX 750 1GB and sacrifice the 10% performance over the Ti model just to be on the safe side.

We are talking about replacing the Intel HD Graphics 4600 here. Even a standard clock GTX 750 is a bit more than 4x faster (comparing 3DMark Fire Strike).
