Well you could read up the annual reports of Nexon. Their primary source of income is microtransactions from F2P games. I believe they post their sell through rate, that is the percentage of active players that buy something. IIRC it was just north of 10%.

Nexon had more than $1 billion USD of income last year. They are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

You think that there are actually a large number of players, as in hundreds or thousands, that bring in 1000g a day? Easy for people to claim they make that much flipping. Just like it’s easy to suggest they got Dusk in a boss drop by typing out the tag [&AgEBcgAA] in map chat.

Yes, someone with a lot of coin can try to control supply of a historically low drop rate item or material and then try to demand an even higher amount of coin for them. That only works if they keep seizing new supply at an increasing cost and have the inventory space to hoard it just so they can play De Beers.

And while legionaries and precursors prices are out there, there are only 61 exotic weapons that the low sell price is over 100g, 70 over 50g and 216 over 25g. You don’t need to be insanely wealthy to own great gear.

Sure the starting price for the cheapest of the 21 legionaries is over 1500g, but considering all the items you need to craft one, shouldn’t the person who crafted it not get a windfall if they choose to sell it?

Sounds like those guys just wanted to kick you and sell your spot.

It’s like Behellagh, the key is how much you abuse and profit, I don’t think they go after things like you described.
I don’t even think Anet has a way to log what players are doing inside the dungeons for future investigation if anything is reported for that matter.

Not all players kick to sell spots, often it’s just because friends and guildmates show up and they would rather play with them than a random stranger.

But okay i know what you want to tell me.
Just one last thing.

What about module performance
FX 8350 scores – Cinebench1.06
single – 1.06
4C/4T(1 core per module) – 4.3 (how? 1.06*4 = 4.24) = 405%
2C/4T (2 cores per module) – 3.52

i5
1 core – 1.55
4 cores – 5.74 (1.55*4=6.2) 370%

Just so everyone is on the same page.

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/138394-amds-fx-8350-analyzed-does-piledriver-deliver-where-bulldozer-fell-short/2

FX-8350
1m/1t – 1.06
2m/4t – 3.53
4m/4t – 4.30

i5-3550
1c/1t – 1.55
4c/4t – 5.74

This shows two things. First, the FX cores work better if threads aren’t doubled up in a module. Second, Intel cores when not using HT murders the FX in terms of performance in 1 thread (+46%) or 4 thread (33%). And that’s not even the fastest i5 at the time of the article.

If you want to point out scaling differences between the i5-3550 and the FX-8350, first you have to realize that both processors will boost clock speed with fewer threads but boost is actually unpredictable. Second compare apples to apples. i5-3550 scaling from 1 to 4 cores, 3.7x or 92% of single core’s performance; FX-8350 scaling from 1 to 8 cores (you insist they are real cores), 6.5x or 81% of single core’s performance.

I don’t give a scritt’s stash about Crysis, while streaming or not, or any other game because I can counter example where AMD FX underperforms compared to an Intel. We are talking about this game and in this game the FX’s design is lacking. It’s not because ANet favored one over another, it’s because the FX was designed for loaded servers running balanced loads and not desktops running an unbalanced load.

Which is really not that big a risk if you keep aware of market trends, which most players don’t want to bother with, and shouldn’t HAVE to bother with. That’s the fundamental disagreement here, some of you feel that the players should have to play like TP flippers if they want to make TP flipper profits, my point is that NOBODY should have to play like TP flippers in an action/adventure game.

Not if they simply bother undercut the current low sale price for an item they want to sell or overcut the current high bid for an item they want or even match those prices. They don’t need to research, they just need to bother to “haggle” with player vendors and be willing to wait. I watch every copper. I use WPs sparingly. I don’t buy new gear frequently while leveling. And I never just sell on the TP to the current high bidder or buy from the current low seller. All that extra copper and silver adds up.

I can’t imagine in a game where people are bemoaning how cash poor they are aren’t willing to do the simplest thing to earn or save more cash if only they are willing to wait.

Which would be fine, except that flippers pocket the difference and end up with more money over time than the other players. You don’t see your average Lion’s Arch vendor rocking Sunrise.

How do you know that don’t have one at home and are playing poor.

Because it’s not really 8 cores the same way the i7 isn’t really 8 cores despite what the Task Manager shows.

If you count cores by number of L1 instruction caches, L2 caches, instruction decoders and/or FPUs then the FX-8xxx only has 4 cores. The same methodology also yields a count of four cores on the desktop Intel i7. It’s only when you count ALUs (arithmetic and logic unit) that you get 8 “cores” on an FX. Each one of the ALUs in an AMD FX is of a much simpler design than the ALU that was in the Phenom II which is why it has to be clocked faster than a Phenom II just to match the Phenom II’s performance.

Intel’s core ALU is even larger than the Phenom II’s. It allows the Intel to execute more instructions in the same number of clocks, which is why it has such great single thread performance. But it’s so large that not all of it being used as efficiently as it could be. That led to the notion of Hyper Threading. By decoding two threads of code, the instruction scheduler can improve the utilization of the ALU so even more instructions can be executed in the same number of clocks.

AMD chose dedicated ALUs for each thread per “module”, Intel uses a much larger ALU that can be optionally shared between two threads. “Optionally shared” is the key phrase here because while an AMD module single thread performance does improve a bit when only running one thread (ignoring clock boost) due to not sharing the rest of a traditional core with the overhead of running the second ALU, a single thread on Intel now has access to all of the ALU, even if it’s not using all of it as frequently as when two threads are running.

Analogy time. Intel’s core is a wagon carrying 2 large barrels of ale being pulled by a single large dolyak while AMD’s module is a similar wagon being pulled by two much smaller dolyaks. Both can travel at the same speed. However if each wagon has only a single barrels but one wagon has a large dolyak while the other has only a smaller dolyak, the wagon with the large dolyak can go much faster.

Okay not a great analogy but at least a layperson can visualize it better than abstract elements of a CPU design.

Why? Because so many people don’t understand Probability and Statistics, which is why they are taught together in college. A one in five chance doesn’t mean you will always get one on the fifth try or that you can only get one every five times you try.

Also if a desired item is only attainable as the “secret toy surprise” it’s true cost isn’t predictable. If only ANet would just be honest and offer BLC skins at 5000, 10,000, 30,000 gems instead of making it variable based on luck of the RNG.

The “anyone can do it but choose not to” argument is self serving and disingenuous at best.

No it isn’t. Where do you think the money a flipper earns come from? It comes from taking the risk of posting an item for sale NOT at the high bid and NOT buying items at at the current low sale price. You want to deny flippers their source of income? Then don’t use the TP like an NPC vendor.

I said this before, flippers are just player vendors willing to sell you an item for X but buy it back for much less than X. Exactly what NPC vendors do. They never buy back an item for as much as they are willing to sell it to you for. The difference is player vendors are willing to pay the player more for an item and consequently sell it for more as well.

Yes, but the profit potential is considerably higher for considerably less effort, and is done employing a gameplay style that is completely out of touch with this game’s core game mechanics.

But it’s not considerably less effort. Different effort. And I contend that both speed runs and champ trains are a degenerated form of game play, leveraging game mechanics in ways they were never intended. Speed runners know that enemy NPC leashes will keep the party from pulling ever critter along with them preventing a very messy battle when they do stop. And champ trains leverage waypoints, respawn times, encounter scaling and improved champ rewards to rack in the drops.

They aren’t secrets of any kind, I’m pretty sure ANet’s linked them themselves and they are using tools ANet themselves provided. There is nothing at all “exploit” about them, just like GW2lfg before they added the finder tool, they are just community aides.. The game’s events would be practically unplayable without them.

They why was it I only heard about them when I decided to check out the forums. Not every player joining an MMO is going to search the web for 3rd party tools. I went several months before I heard about TP sites like GW2Spidy, any of the event viewers, WvW aids, annotated T6 mat maps or the GW2lfg? ANet doesn’t advertise them in any official way. They don’t even have a list of links to player run sites.

I would agree, nobody is really talking about shutting those down, but rather the mechanisms in the game itself that make those strategies so effective. Ideally though they could lock out the sites that charge a real money fee to get better trading data or tips, that’s just downright skeevy.

Fine, eliminate the mechanisms that make speed runs doable. That train new players to level to 80 without every leaving the Queensdale Champ train.

It’s one thing being familiar with a dungeon path so you know about every encounter ahead of time, plan accordingly so you can do it efficiently and it’s another thing knowing you can bypass dozens of enemy by simply running past them without worry that all of them will be showing up behind you when you do stop to fight.

And preventing a champ drop if you received one in the last X minutes would discourage the rapid, repeat farming of champs as well as the poor gamesmanship that champ trains have created. Heaven forbid you and your buddies encounter a champ DE during your first night playing and finish it before the train arrives. Better have your flame kittenant undies on the the abuse that will be directed your way.

Basically you got your knickers in a twist because someone can earn more money understanding market psychology and research than just mashing buttons with a character built along a published template of traits, skills and items (MUST MAKE WARRIOR ZERKER BUILD), running a detailed speed run walkthrough or joining a train.

Your CPU wont be full load because GW2 sits on a single core as it’s single thread. Since i7s are quad core, you wouldnt even see more than 25% load from gw2.

(might be wrong, but I rarely see more than 50% while running gw2 on my i3)

GW2 doesn’t sit on a single core. It is multithreaded but the distribution of work across threads aren’t in any way balanced. Primarily it’s three threads, two being aspects the renderer with a half a dozen others providing support. But since no thread can run faster than 100% of a core, single thread core performance becomes the limiting factor on how fast the game can run and why throwing more cores at the game is pointless.

Fairness doesn’t enter into it at all.

Any player can earn more coin and spend less coin if they are willing to sell the item at more than current high bid or buy an item by putting in a bid bellow current low sell price. The fact they choose not to presents an opportunity for someone to profit from it as long as the gap between the two prices is more than the TP fees and taxes.

Is it fair that a speed run group can earn more per hour in the same dungeon path I run with a PUG? Is it fair that by using a 3rd party web site you know which boss event is coming up next so you don’t have to wait around while others remain ignorant because the game doesn’t tell them?

In the first case you could say the speed run group has skill and knowledge allowing them to complete path. I would say it requires skill and knowledge to be successful in “flipping”.

In the second case you could say that those websites are open secrets and it doesn’t require much research at all to find them and use them to your advantage. I would say the same about all the various trading post sites that sample the entire TP periodically and can provide charts where anyone could see the trading range of any item as well as recent trends in the movement of the price as well as actual supply and so call demand.

Whatever Anet says it is.

It’s that simple but the basic rule of thumb is you could break the risk Vs reward balance or found a way through game mechanics that could generate a large amount of items or gold or you realized that you could farm certain spawned critters during an event indefinitely for great drops as long as you don’t try to complete the event, then you’re likely exploiting a bug and abuse of that bug is bannable.

Abuse is the key to banning. If you discover the change machine at work gives you $2 dollars in quarters for every dollar you put in, doing it the first time and discovering it wouldn’t necessary be theft, feeding it dollar bills all day and have a 5 gallon bucket to haul the quarters away, that’ll get you in trouble.

The Phenom II X4 980 is a fair comparison because the FX wasn’t out when the i5-2500K was introduced. The 980 was the fastest Phenom II at 3.7GHz. (The i5-2500K came out Jan 2011, the Phenom II X4 980 in May 2011.)

Or would you rather have me compare the -2500K with the 975 which was introduced in the same month as the -2500K? It’s 100MHz slower than the 980. It’s not Intel’s problem that the Phenom II quad core desktop series of CPUs first came out some two years earlier in Jan 2009 and didn’t have a significant upgrade other than clock speed for two years. I picked the fastest 4 thread processor AMD had the year when the -2500K came out. I’m not picking based similar price, where AMD could compete, just simply the fastest available and that was the 980.

Or would you rather have me compare it to the FX-4100 which came out that October 2011? The 980 spanks the -4100.

So lets go back a generation. The i5-750 quad came out in Sept 2009 and the Phenom II X4 965 came out in Nov 2009. Both quad cores that could only run 4 threads and when multithreading they were equivalent. So in 16 months Intel had a completely new architecture that was 45% faster and all AMD did was crank the clock speed up by 9%. And when the first gen FX quad thread CPUs came out they were slower performance wise than the Phenom IIs they were replacing.

Of course I’ve always said comparing a 2 module FX to a 4 core Intel is an unfair comparison because the module was suppose to be compete with an Intel core with HT running 2 threads not without HT or running 1 thread. So the proper comparison with the FX-4100 would be the Intel i3-2130 and in multithreaded tests they are.

And there’s the rub. Every two “cores” of an FX is equivalent to one Intel core with HT, that was the design goal and they made it if they could clock the FX fast enough. However marketing choose to ignore the design requirement, assume the end user is an idiot and therefore number of cores became the new “megahertz myth” (more is better).

I wouldn’t say mediocre performance. You put a FX-8350 up against a i7-2600K in heavily multithreaded applications and it keeps up. Problem is Intel is now 2 generations beyond the -2600K with each generation squeezing a bit more performance each generation.

Overall it’s an improvement over the Phenom II if you compared a 980 quad to an i5-2500 quad (Intel 25% faster whether it’s single or multithreaded). But the trade off is when the CPU isn’t fully used, Intel smashes the FX (single thread FX-8350 vs Intel i7-2600K, the -2600K is 40% faster). So both CPUs running 8 threads, virtual tie but single thread, FX loses badly.

And since GW2 is 1) lightly threaded and 2) not GPU bound except with low end graphics cards, single threaded CPU performance is more important and single threaded performance wasn’t an FX design goal.

Currently the 2nd close beta only has Humans, Charr and Norns. The first had Humans, Asura and Sylvari. This open beta looks to include the entire world.

First you have to have a native language translation of the entire game. Then every DE and Heart quest needs to be vetted by the powers that be so nothing subversive is allowed. Then morality/taste issue in critter models and armors. While GW2 isn’t anything close to Blade & Soul in the amount of skin showing, there may be some tweaking required. Then there’s all the voice overs. So they need to audition, cast, record and unless lip flapping is an automatic thing based on audio, possibly resync the lips. Personal stories/choices may be changed to be more culturally relevant. Then there’s the in game jokes that they may want to change so China gets them rather than think it’s wacky dialog.

Trotting out explanation again …

Everything below the TP title bar and right of the tabs is a web page rendered at the “normal” resolution. That screen is then scaled into the space below the title and right of the tabs. That’s why on any setting other than normal they look different. For some reason they couldn’t either relay the scale selection to the server or the Awesomium browser the game uses couldn’t handle the layout itself.

That’s why the TP is somewhat unreadable with the interface is set to small and fugly when it’s set to large.

Mesmer was my first character, because it was similar to a class from a different MMO I played. Basically it’s illusions are part aggro management and part additional damage while you are blasting away at range. Basically “go after the guys next to you and ignore the guy at a distance blasting you with a beam weapon that gets stronger the further away they are”. May not be the most practical tactic but it does work well soloing. And in a game where there are few organized parties but flash mob events, you can find yourself soloing frequently unless you would rather mindlessly hook up with a champ or event train. I’m more of an explorer than that.

My other character is a thief. Yes they are brittle. But they do have a nice mix of melee and range attacks that allow me to take on some critters with ease that my Mesmer can’t as easily.

This “next gen” MMO started being built in 2007, back when gamers detested Vista which was the only way to get Dx10, which still wasn’t thread safe. And the “next gen” aspect was about game design and not the underlying technology.

The game is multithreaded, it’s just that the work load isn’t as balanced as one would like.

As for the high and mighty Blizzard. With a BILLION dollars a year of subscriptions for several years you can afford to recode your entire game engine.

AMD marketing obfuscated the notion of core count with the FX series. While Intel’s method fakes out the OS into believing more cores exist than actually do, AMD’s method was to fuse parts of two cores with the remaining parts of a single core and called it a “module”. While running two threads at the same time, a “module” can be competitive with a HT Intel core but it’s at a severe disadvantage when each are only running only a single thread.

And that’s the rub. This game simply can not provide enough work to maximize the workload that an FX would be competitive to an Intel and isn’t graphically intense enough to make the limiting issue the graphics card. That’s why the HD 7950 doesn’t matter here. In games that are always limited by the graphics card, CPU really doesn’t matter a whole lot.

But the players are “incompetent, illiterate, and/or lazy” … well to be fair they are impatient and/or indifferent. Speed in setting up a sell order, speed in getting money or the item is more important than getting or saving coin. It’s a convenience issue from a player’s perspective.

Now these “player run vendors” set up shop, willing to pay for items other players get or farm, aggregate them and turn around and offer them up for sale. These PRVs compete against each other to purchase and then turn around their inventory. This competition results in higher bids and lower sale prices. Of course items with very low drop rates could be horded and manipulated but those are luxury vanity items. De Beers anybody?

Also these PRVs have to compete with Salvagers, players who buy items merely to salvage them, for their inventory which also raises the bid meaning a player selling gets more coin.

The belief that all it takes is to put in a bid for a lot of an item at a pittance and then turn around and sell at a massive markup is simply wrong. That is not how they are making their coin and it’s certainly not that easy.

http://www.gw2tp.com/item/19721-glob-of-ectoplasm

Yes, it is entirely up to interpretation. I have compared looking at these charts to divining the popularity of a particular breakfast cereal in your market by counting how many are on the shelf daily and charting that data. You have no idea how frequently the shelf is restocked so you have no sense of actual trading volume.

All that the chart really shows is ecto supply blooming from 20-30K at the beginning of December and by mid February approaching 260K while total number of bids remained nearly constant. Then at the start of the Escape event ecto supply started to shrink rapidly. Why it’s shrinking at the rate it is entirely up to speculation. As far as I know none of the back items require ectos to craft.

That’s because all HT does is provide a chance to improve the overall efficiency of the core by an unknown amount. Most of the time it’s the same as a 10% overclock. Sometimes it’s more, occasionally a lot more and occasionally the impact is actually negative.

That’s the most recent comprehensive test I know of between HT and not HT in gaming.

Having an economical system which rewards those who spend all day trading more than players who run even the hardest content undermines the entire reward structure of a game.

It’s not an economical system, it’s simply a trading post for unwanted goods with the alternative is selling the item for a pittance to a vendor or simply deleting it.

Now the side effect of a trading post is that players who want cash for their item immediately or simply don’t care about maximizing the amount of cash they get, and conversely is willing to spend more for immediate delivery of an item instead of waiting for a lower bid be filled, creates an opportunity for players who are willing to put cash up front to buy goods that they think they can sell later for a profit (because otherwise why bother?).

Without them if you are looking to sell an unwanted item you better hope someone is looking for a “fair” price. Otherwise you will have to wait for such a buyer to come along or accept a pittance from the vendor just to get it out of your inventory.

It’s only because of the sheer volume of players dumping items onto the TP for a quick coin and free inventory space that these “player vendors” can earn the amount of money they do. A few copper profit times thousands of items per day can add up quickly and in the background, still letting them play the game like everyone else.

Well looking at the month chart, it looks as if the volume of trades have gone up. So there may have been “dams” at 35s or 36s and the flood waters rose and wiped them away. I’m basing that assumption on the decrease in available supply. It looks as if supply has reached equilibrium again and that’s why the price really hasn’t continued to go up. Supply dropped 100,000 while demand increased only 10,000.

Of course that could just mean players stopped cracking rares for the gooey ectos inside due to the event and that’s why the excess supply was consumed.

Where can be a fair equilibrium if the market is under someone’s “control”? You can tell that if everything is et ceteris paribus, not if someone tries to hold a price up. This isn’t a perfect competition. Also in my opinion most players are not lazy. They just don’t care about the TP Game. And players who care about their prices will orientate themselves at this “dam” price.

I really hope this manipulation isn’t by Anet to prevent players to have too much gold because of a possible deflation as a result of farm events like the actual. On the otherside inflation seems to be ok. There is nobody dumping prices like iron ore…

When all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail. When you believe that market manipulation is the root of all things you dislike about the TP, they you “see” it everywhere.

In Dec and Jan ecto supplies rose 6-8x and the price dropped from 39s to 30s. Since the Feb 19th this trend reversed and supply dropped off rapidly. So either real demand is up and/or production is down.

Now when supply is on the rice prices are going down, you end up with a large spread of prices with very few items at each price. Players simply keep undercutting rather than pile on because the price isn’t recovering. However when supply is falling these low priced sale orders are quickly snapped up so looking in from the outside you see the price quickly rising. Now with supply falling and prices constantly going up the better play is not to undercut but actually price above the current low sale price.

This is where the psychology of “walls” come into play. When you see a huge number of items at a particular price, you hesitate going on the wrong side of it, based on the direction of prices. In this case it discourages pricing above it because you don’t know how long until it’s broken through, if ever. That leaves you either pricing your item just under it or join the masses at the wall. The choice is really how patient you are VS how quickly you need the coin.

This still doesn’t stop players from selling to highest bid, ignoring the demand at that price which causes the sharp short term spikes to just above the new highest bid. But that quickly vanishes and prices jump back up closer to the wall. Looks as if 36.5-37s is the current intentional sell price range. And when I looked last night the wall had eroded down to 29K@37s.

Performance Issues - A8 Quad-core laptop

Sorry, I really wasn’t bashing your CPU as much as trying to state a inherent problem with this game. The A8-5550M is a dual module/quad thread CPU that if processing 4 threads can dip the clock only to 2.1 GHz, which is very low for CPU architecture that wants a very high clock rate simply to keep up with Intel.

locx is right, since it’s a laptop it is very heat sensitive which could throttle both the CPU and GPU clock speeds. Those numbers you are seeing are quite low if you are running the graphic settings at minimal and your display is only 1366×768.

sirsquishy is also right that AMD systems tend to be set up to prefer lower power usage over high performance. For my AMD if I set my power config to high performance it disables any kind of clock speed reduction or core parking. But you better have it plugged in and running off the adapter as well as making sure it’s being properly cooled. You would be surprised how many systems, include desktops, get thermally throttled because a family of dust bunnies moved in.

But it’s still using a proxy currency that’s sold in larger sizes that 25 cents.

So.. you are claiming a 5 dollar purchase is not viable?

No, there are two issues being smushed together. Selling smaller/exact amounts of proxy currency and having more items in the 100 gem or less range. Now credit card companies do charge a fix amount plus a percentage of the charge amount for each charge. This is why they are unlikely be willing to sell you a dollar’s worth of gems. But that shouldn’t mean they can’t have more items, beyond the various consumables, in the 100 gem range. Individual armor piece skins for instance. Day pass for the airship or royal terrace, good for 1 real world day after first use.

A8-5550M is a fairly slow CPU and while the game is multithreaded, it still relies on a primary thread or two so a slow single core performance translates into slow GW2 performance.

There is a difference between putting in a buy order and a sell order. The buy order is simply deducting coin from a player’s account while a buy order removes an “item” from the player character’s inventory. There is a difference in “cost” between the two operations.

Why do people think it’s a single person? Just as likely people who were selling at current low sell price piling on. 37g is a nice even number that was much higher than where it was a day or two before.

Because players undercut all the time. I’ve only seen like <10k globs for the same price. Nobody sells his stuff for the same price if there are already 50k

Hard to believe this is from one player, because that’s worth like over 25’000 gold.

The only two possibilities I can imagine are:
a) A large guild with an agreement not to undercut
b) ANET

You underestimate the shear laziness or indifference of players. The ones who don’t pause long enough on the sell screen to register the number already at that price. They just sell at current low sale price, just as they sell at current high bid which causes the spikes down to the high bid you see on the history graphs because they are selling more than whatever the bid was for so the excess generates a new sell order at the previous high bid price. (Well really the sell order is generated first at the high bid price and then the bid is fulfilled.)

You see this a lot with high volume items on the TP, thousands at the same price, you would think people would undercut but it’s not worth their time because it’s more important to start the next speedrun or hop back on the champ train. These are the players who constantly bump into the sell speed limitation because they are want to dump a dozen or two items in under a minute. You think they even notice the price much less than the current quantity at the speeds they want to sell at?
