It was down to only a few hours last night when I pulled the trigger on Rox’s bow and quiver.

The sale started 12:01am PDT on 8/23 and would run for 10 days which means it ended at 12:01 PDT on 9/2 which was 3:02am EDT or 7 zulu.

Buy gem... what?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

In general prices on average will rise or remain steady. It rarely goes down. One strategy is to buy Gems with a fix amount of money (or a % of your total) every day/week and slowly accumulate Gems for the inevitable day that something you want does go on sale. Because when something good suddenly shows up at the Gem shop the price of gems will spike because everyone tries to convert then. If you have a 401K at work it’s similar, dollar cost averaging it’s called. I do it daily, first thing logging in after the day reset after picking up any coin at the TP.

The one place that I know is currently accurate with Gold to Gem price is here.

http://www.guildwarstrade.com/gems

GW2Spidy’s Gem price graph was better but broke a few months back.

Gem to Gold rate is 0.7225 of the Gold to Gem rate (0.85 × 0.85). Looking at the current graph it seems the end of the sale has it effect as players stopped buying Gems and are now selling to take advantage of the high exchange rate. Gem price in nearly at 4g50s. No idea if it’ll drop further. Tomorrows update is going to turn the TP upside down rather than having some new interesting item at the Gem store so I expect prices to continue to go down or stabilize. A month ago it was 3g35s. Two weeks ago it was around 4g so I don’t expect it to go much below 4g in the next few days.

So pay attention to what’s coming “soon” on the main website, watch the gem prices and buy some every day or week so you won’t get caught if a spike happens, or at least you won’t have to buy all of the gems you want when a spike happens.

The “new” client side render version of the game does use a bit more CPU than the previous version. I was at 65% and now also at 70% on my quad core.

As for the sound, don’t know. I occasionally get glitches as well but other than taking a while to get sound after zoning I haven’t experienced it much. I think it’s a “too many resources need to be read off of drive at the same time” problem.

Wow privileged much? I would say most players never got close to 50% much less beyond that. So you can’t get an extra 45% over what the unwashed masses get so the item is useless now. /shakes head

Buy gem... what?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Cut and paste from my last post on the subject of the Gold/Gem Exchange.

It was founded with a extremely large but finite supply of Gems and a much smaller amount of gold. The Gems you get when buying comes from this supply and Gold you get by selling gems come from this supply.

The exchange rate is the ratio between the amount of exchange Gems and exchange Gold. At the start to was around 100 Gems for every 25s. The Gold to Gems rate is this ratio divided by 0.85 while Gems to Gold rate is this ratio multiplied by 0.85.

As Gems are bought the amount of Gems in the exchange goes down while the amount of Gold at the exchange increases which makes the rate go up. Conversely buying Gold with Gems decreases the amount of Gold at the exchange while increasing the amount of Gems at the exchange which makes the rate go down.

This means the more Gems we buy, the more the rate increases. And since it’s a ratio it will increase at a faster and faster pace as the number of Gems in the exchange dwindle. The theory is that at some point the Gem to Gold rate, which increases at the same rate as Gold to Gems, will become attractive enough for players to by Gems with cash and exchange them for Gold. And once Gems entering the exchange balances the Gems leaving the exchange, the rates will stabilize.

And that’s basically what we’ve been told so far. In theory the exchange can run out of Gems. But as it gets closer and closer to that the price for Gems will skyrocket and since the price of Gems for Gold rocket up along with it the hope is that players will buy Gems for cash and exchange them for large amounts of gold thus driving the exchange rate down.

Not just look better but also have a faster frame rate with the same settings? How many are 64-bit clients?

There is a program called Hijack This. It has a long history and one time available at Trend Micro’s site. It lists all the software currently running as well as the registry entries that list programs that get run at boot time. Press the Scan button, then press the log button and then post the log.

Not asking you to read the output from DxDiag (press the save information button to write it to a file), simply post everything before the “System Devices” section. This will give us a run down of your hardware.

I simply think you either don’t want to share or if it is fixed, a problem was with your Internet connection. Either way I’m washing my hands of you. Seek help from some other player.

It’s not the MB I worry about but the CPU. I think officially Sandy/Ivy/Haswell have a voltage limit on the RAM signals of 1.5V. Sure plenty of OCers simply ignore that on their quest to shaft Intel by getting more performance for the money (original reason for OCing CPUs) but for someone new at this, doing it themselves, lets stay inside the lines as long as the memory can hit those speeds at 1.5volts.

All the files are in the game folder for the game. There’s a Guild Wars folder in the user’s Documents folder and that holds your screenshots, alternate background music a Local.dat file which likely contains your game settings (maybe just hardware), saved account name and password. Not sure about keybinds and the like, I play a rather vanilla set of keybinds so I wouldn’t have noticed when I played at my folks. I wouldn’t recommend transferring this file over. I didn’t bother since I had to choose very different graphic settings for the game on their machine.

That folder will be created from scratch when you first start the game, along with the gw2cache folder buried deep in your user folder and used for the TP browser.

The only other thing is making sure you can get to your e-mail as I expect you will be asked to authorize the new IP address a few times while out at sea.

Copy it to an external hard drive. Thumb drive is possible (32GB one) but since all thumb drives I’ve played with are formatted as FAT32, that limits the size of any one file to 4GB you will have to use a utility to break the gw2.dat file up into parts and reassemble it on your target computer. I used 7zip, setting compression to none and span size to CD (DVD size is larger than 4GB). Just make sure to include the splitter program along with the rest.

It’s how I moved a copy of the game down to my folks for the holiday last year (didn’t have a 32GB key, used a 16GB and an 8GB). Once you put all the files from the original game folder into the new one on the target system, you should be good to go.

You are allowed to have as many copies of the game on as many different machines as you want. The license is for your account, not the game. As long as you are logged in only on one machine at a time, you’re golden. Which reminds me you should bring along a copy of your serial # in case you have to deal with support while you are at sea.

Does BF3 have 100+ live players on the screen at the same time?

Short answer is ANet uses their own game engine and not something like Unreal 3 and it’s not optimized for frame rate. Actually when a lot of players are on screen the game becomes CPU limited. The game only uses around 2 to 3 cores worth of CPU power at most. An ultra high end Titan card will be woefully under utilized even at max settings.

Want to cap stuttering (as in wildly inconsistent frame rates)? Set the frame rate limiter to 30.

There’s two POVs about sizing the PSU. Good enough for now Vs big enough to support a 2nd similar video card in the future. Hard core gamer DIYers would recommend the larger PSU. The budget minded would get a PSU large enough for today with a bit to spare but not so much for a 2nd video card (but enough for additional drives and overclocking, maybe).

Looking at your new parts list.

No idea what you are planning to use the additional pair of fans for. The H100i will mount at the top, it has it’s own pair of fans and I don’t think there’s enough room for a push me/pull you setup around the radiator unless you mount the 2nd pair on the outside of the case. The front fan is 200mm, the side fan mount is 200mm or 140mm and not 120mm. Replace the fans that come with the H100i? Replace the rear and add the bottom fan? I’m all for a decent amount of air exchange but I think there’s enough as it is.

Personally not a fan of super overclocked memory. Especially ones that need to run at 1.65V to get that speed. I thought the CAS 9 DDR3-1866 memory was plenty fast. From what I’ve seen written about it, you aren’t going to see real world performance improvement between -1866 and -2133, 1% maybe. Of course pure memory benchmarks will show a huge difference.

If you aren’t willing to share then there’s nothing we can do to help. We aren’t experiencing this. Load times are under a minute with the worst when we first start the game.

From the symptoms I would almost believe you aren’t running with a lot of system memory or it’s full of other running tasks so the game is forced to run while heavily paged to disk but I can’t imagine that in this day and age. Or maybe you have numerous active anti-virus/malware scanners running at the same time and every one is examining every read from the hard drive. Running the game off of a USB drive hooked to a USB 1.1 port?

We can guess all day here but with out hard facts we are simply throwing darts blindfolded in a dark room.

The three things that would help are a dxdiag log (which will show us your hardware), a Hijack This log (which will show us what’s running on your system at the same time) and a screenshot of your graphic settings in game (but since this is a loading problem it’s probably not helpful).

Ehh I dont follow sorry. The Q2 report says they did $25m this last quarter they reported on. not $7.7m Unless I am misreading something. Its $28b krw which are equivalent to $25m usd. Thats excluding the box sales. Total so far is $160m which covers all the wages for 5 years alone.

Thats also not counting the easter market which generally is greater then the western market making it so potentially it could do $200m a year from the gemshop alone.

During the call itself they said the game is doing strong and seems stable financially. It would be illegal to say that if the income was smaller then the expenses.

You’re missreading it. Page 10 counts the gem shop sales (11.459 KRW in MN =7,79 mio €=10,32 mio $) and page 5 the boxed sales (28.899 KRW in MN = ~20 mio€ = 26 mio $). I’ve been following the financial reports for ages (GW1) and it has always been like that, media report the same numbers.
Nonetheless that doesn’t change my calculation by a lot.
As you’ve maybe noticed I’ve muddled up US$ and €, sorry for the confusion.

Those are the sales by subsidiary. It’s included in the “Parent” section to show which subsidiaries the remaining sales are coming from. It has nothing to do with just cash shop sales as gem card sales are likely filed under NC Interactive and NC Europe since they are the acting distributors to retail.

Seasonic is a good PSU, they are the OEM manufacturer of a lot of highly recommended brands including some Corsair models but their branded models do tend to sell at a premium.

The GTX 670 isn’t that much faster than the 2GB GTX 760, less than 10% but costs $50 more.

You could save a little money with an i5 Vs an i7.

Don’t need the network card.

You are a big believer in case cooling I see. You do know the case already comes with 5, 120 mm and 2, 140mm speed adjustable fans right? I don’t think pushing air through the case is going to be a problem. Of course those two 140mm (or the rear two 120mm) will be replaced with the H100i radiator. Should I bother getting a new video card?

in Account & Technical Support

The thing is the HD 6950 is “good enough”. It’s equivalent to a HD 7850 and there’s not a lot of up to go from there unless you are playing on a high resolution monitor or bank of monitors. Sure you could go with an HD 7950, a $230ish card that has 30% better performance in regular games but here?

The game does stream data while playing from the hard drive. Besides sound effects I see an occasional large read. Now an SSD can improve on this not only be a faster transfer speed but the near elimination of seek time. A 14ms average seek is equivalent to a 1.4MB read of data on a 100MB/s hard drive. SSDs are normally under 0.05ms “seeks”. That’s why small reads and jumping all over a file to get data (16GB data file anybody, there’s got to be lots of seeks in there) could help eliminate some frame rate jitters. On top of that if it’s hooked to a 6Gb/s SATA III port then it also has 4x the transfer rate of a normal HD.

But first in need to see if the HD 6950 is what’s holding you back. You could monitor GPU workload while playing and check to see if the video card is pegged where you are experiencing less than desirable frame rates. If it is then a graphics card upgrade is in order. Then maybe an HD 7950 ($210-320), GTX 760 ($250-270) or HD 7970 ($300-395). In other games we are talking 30-60% better performance over what you have. Here, again who knows?

SSDs only affect performance outside of loading only a smidgen but it “feels” like your rig is faster. And if you what to upgrade something, then at the prices above we are looking at a 240-256GB size SSD. The basic retail box version of the 256GB Samsung 840 Pro is $240, the slightly slower 250GB Samsung 840 is only $175.

WoW raised their revenue for few years, same as EvE, same as few other games.

Looking at just part of the picture that fits what you want to say is disregarding the big picture.

Revenue is down quite a lot since launch, 70% in 2nd quarter GW2 was out and another 20% in third quarter.

Noone can deny GW2 is doing fine, but fact is revenue keeps dropping.

New game, lots of positive press, holiday season, box/game sales. That’s what contributed to such a huge 4Q. They sold around 3 million games in the 4Q and the month before it. And only 1/2 million in the 7-8 months since. It’s also the transition from box/game sales to cash shop. 2Q sales still beat the best quarter of GW by 50% and was still higher than Aion which is still a subscription based game in Asia (Korea is 2/3rds of Aion’s sales).

Dont compare other games, for all we know Aions expenses might be much lower and could be much more profitable than GW2.

Revenue is down on 2 quartes that have nothing to do with launch.

If they actually tell the truth and logins are raising and revenue (which is greatly cash shop driven since q4) has fallen 20%. It means more people that spend way less.

I never mentioned profit, just sales. We’ll never know profits on a per game basis so why bother speculating. The only hard data we have is sales.

It’s also the transition from box/game sales to cash shop. 2Q sales still beat the best quarter of GW by 50% and was still higher than Aion which is still a subscription based game in Asia (Korea is 2/3rds of Aion’s sales).

How is GW2 doing financially?

They have been making the sales that is equivalent of 570,000+ subscribers paying $15 a month. There are like 3 games P2P games that have that many or more: Lineage, WoW, and Eve online. Eve Online just barely hit over 500,000 though. But all 3 of those games are in the asian countries, the biggest MMO player base in the world, where as Guild Wars 2 is only in EU and NA.

So yeah, it does look like GW2 has more sales than the majority of the P2P MMOs out there.

So Iceland (EVE Online) is an Asian country now, didn’t know that. Did China buy them out when I wasn’t looking. :p

Also I noticed that every time you change zones, you are on a different server/IP (makes sense). Also ping times are very variable. I saw it bounce all over on the IP I was connected to (90-240ms).

No, 5% of your posting price and 10% more when the sale is made.

As for your example, you get 85% of your posting price. So you have to divide by 0.85 so the break even point for something you bought for 1s is 1s18c, a 6c posting fee and a 12c sales tax. I use a 20% minimum markup rule of thumb for determining the break even point in my head.

Fastest growing is from release until whoever decided to call it. It was 3 million in sales as reported mid January so that was 4-5 months.

In 10ish months the game had 230,135 million KrW in sales or roughly $200+ million dollars. In those 4 quarters NCSOFT had game sales of 786,920 million KrW so GW2 was 29% of their total sales. I have no idea why people think the game isn’t doing “well” in the eyes of NCSOFT. I would be more concern at Team Bloodlust who did Blade & Soul, it only made 90,222 million KrW in those four quarters and it was touted more. Lineage 1 almost made that much last quarter. Since the game is only released in the NA and Europe markets, looking at those region’s sales GW2 represents 94% of sales in those two regions for the last 4 quarters (244,016 million KrW).

NCSOFT investors are nervous because none of their MMO titles rely solely on Cash Shop sales to keep them running. Lineage 1+2, Aion and Blade and Soul are all subscription games in Asia which may also have a Cash Shop. The first Guild Wars had additional box sets during it’s first 2-3 years. The stockholders are frightened by this new strange way to fund an MMO, B2P + Cash Shop.

So Guild Wars 2 is the grand experiment. Already we see with WildStar’s announcement of a standard MMO subscription model and virtually no Cash Shop other than PLEX CREDD, NCSOFT isn’t willing to bet on GW2’s income model. And (T)ESO also following along with a traditional subscription model means at least WildStar/NCSOFT isn’t alone in not embracing a Hybrid/F2P model out of the gate.

Now when GW2 goes into China I don’t expect to see GW2 sales numbers go up because in China you go though a 3rd party and that income is reported in NCSOFT’s income sheet as Royalties and they haven’t yet break royalties down on a per game basis, only direct sales.

So is the game doing well financially, I think we can say yes. Do those who are disappointed that the game isn’t what they expected wish it wasn’t, I think we can say yes to that as well. Only problem with B2P/F2P as oppose to subscription is you can’t protest with your wallet, only support.
