It’s a cash shop Serraphin, gems are merely what the proxy currency is called. The Gold to Gems is simply a way to get players to fund the Gems to Gold side of the exchange and not the primary means to get gems to spend in the store.

Define rare then Kruhljak. 1%? 10%? With nearly 40 possible items in a chest with the most common being in the 20-25% range then what do you consider to be rare then since most items are under a 5% chance as it is?

How to increase FPS?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

There is no config file.

Are you running the 13.4 drivers, beta drivers or what your laptop came with?

You never said what your FPS was and where you were when you checked. Cities depress the frame rate as well as times when surrounded by active players. More players, worse frame rate.

Not sure if CrossfireX is a plus with this game. You could try to use only the HD 7670M and see if that gives you a better frame rate.

Most importantly, the game becomes CPU bound often. So a low performance CPU will drive down overall performance. A 1900MHz Piledriver core is pretty low end performance wise.

Since it is a laptop make sure you are running a performance profile for power (assuming you are playing plugged in).

That’s all I have for now.

Using all 4 CPU cores?

As follow up I just grabbed a couple of screen shots with Process Explorer’s Properties Window up on the game.

The first shows a graph of the CPU %, memory use and I/O use (disk) by just the game. Graph is ticks over every 5 seconds so the I/O use is a 5 sec average.

The second shows the threads being used by the game sorted by CPU . I don’t have a fast GPU, it’s arguable that the embedded HD 6550D isn’t even a slow GPU, I’m pulling 10FPS is that snap with nearly all settings at the “Best Appearance” setting (except DoF and Best filtering, VSync is on). That might be the reason the ATI thread is pulling only 9 or 36% of a core.

Why is Performance Never/Rarely Addressed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

I’m not going to claim to be a programmer of 30 years, but I will say this. When wow launched it’s 64bit client my fps doubled. A 64bit client in Gw2 would mitigate the pain that is WvW. Please stop trying to convince yourselves that a 32bit client is just as good as a 64bit client. Even a monkey knows it’s better to have 64 bananas over 32 bananas.

Too bad your comment will never be heard. A 64bit client would go a long way to fixing a lot of issues. So would moving from DirectX 9c only to 10 or 11. Wait a minute; we were promised GW2 would support DX 10.

No we weren’t (promised Dx10 or 11) and 64-bit isn’t the panacea you think it is. The game already can use 4GB of memory as it is, 64-bit would just let it have loads more. Performance improvement would be negligible. Performance issues like this are a design problem and while refactoring the rendering pipeline is doable it’s not a quick or easy endeavor when you are making sure you aren’t breaking anything or making it worse. It’s obvious the game has problems when loads of players are packed into a relatively small area and/or the area is visually complex. This shows the problem is algorithmic in nature.

Also it’s easy to create lots of threads, the game spins off over 40 not counting the TP, but what’s hard is to do it in a way where these threads can efficiently run in parallel to one another and not be blocked, frequently forced to sync or have vastly different run times so the performance improvement is no where near what you would think.

Sorry, but you are not correct. We were promised DX10 support shortly after Vista came out (I believe it was back in 2007). Gail Gray was the one that publicy announced it during an ingame chat. At the time she was very pleased that she was allowed to announce it.

I’m guessing there’s no print record of that from ANet. Or from any publication/web site covering that. I’m guessing that when gamers rejected Vista en mass that plans changed. Or maybe it was those first few games that added Dx10 support that traded looks for frame rate (Lost Planet) that caused the engine team to have 2nd thoughts.

Using all 4 CPU cores?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

It’s not single threaded. The game spawns over 40 threads, it’s just that most do very specific things and run for a very short period of time on average but there is only a handful of threads that each use 40% or more of a core’s power. So if shoved all together it’s 2 to 3 cores worth of work that’s being done.

What upsets people is the notion of only 2-3 cores worth of work being done. Those with more than 4 physical cores are upset at the notion that the game doesn’t use more. It’ll be like complaining that not all the memory on the video card isn’t being used (notice yours is only using 784MB).

If you want to see the thread load then you can get Process Explorer from Microsoft. It allows you to open a properties window on any running task and there’s a Threads tab. Simply sort by CPU % and you’ll get to see what I’m saying.

This is an older picture with the game running in a window for example. Just remember the % is system wide so a thread running at 19.36% is using (I have a quad core so multiply by 4) 77.44% of a core. No thread can run more than 100% of a core which is a limiting factor.

If they start by activating it to only 5% of the active game population that is still likely 100x more players than are in the closed beta. It is a LFG tool, you need lots of people LFG to test it properly.

In the end for me is just a way to join and get booted by more teams faster for not running with “1337 zerker gear”.

Just like with gw2lfg, you can pick and choose the groups you want to join. They get to put a tag with what they are looking for. So if you want to avoid the zerker only groups, dont join the ‘speed run’ description.

Free Space: 31.7 GB
Total Space: 238.4 GB
File System: NTFS
Model: ST3250824AS ATA Device

With only 31GB free on a 250GB drive I’m going to guess the game dat file is fairly fragmented. While shifting render sampling to normal should help with the graphics, a good defrag should improve load times and reduce any jitter in frame rate if the game needs to spool anything off the drive while playing.

I find that Auslogics DiskDefrag does a nice job and it’s fairly quick. It also can be targeted to defrag a folder or even a single file. Also CCleaner is a nice utility to sweep away junk files just before a defrag.

Also since you are running an AMD FX, have you looked into disabling core parking? There’s a patch from Microsoft for that.

Behellagh.1468

1) Basically the thread which grinds through all the geometry to figure out what to send to the GPU is taking too long and thus starving higher performing cards.

2) It’s not a matter of core balance as thread balance. The OS is the one that assigns cores to threads based on which cores are available at the time. There are over 40 threads running in this game, it’s just that 10 or less use 5% or more of a core when they run with only a three or four use over 40% of a core’s available time. This tends to translate with only a few cores showing high usage with the rest not as much, simply because there really isn’t much work for more than 3 cores to do.

3) The 32-bit client is Long Address Aware meaning it can use 4GB on a 64-bit OS. For most players it doesn’t come close to this limit. For those running out of memory, I suspect it’s an interaction with some other software running on those systems, perhaps whatever video driver they are using. We have no idea what ties those players together but if out of memory errors are rampant, the boards would have exploded. There has to be some commonality there.

An optimized 64-bit client would indeed have advantages over an optimized 32-bit client. The problem right now is that we have neither, so it’s an entirely moot point. Merely switching over to 64-bit compilation does not automatically grant you any benefits other than the possibility of increased RAM use, but it’s been well-documented that RAM use is not the biggest issue that Gw2.exe is facing. Regardless of whether the client is 32- or 64-bit, Anet would have to perform essentially the same task to make it work the way we want and expect it to. Thus, asking for 64-bit client as the first step to performance improvement is pointless, and would only serve to drop support for the people who don’t have 64-bit systems.

64-bit code doesn’t buy you any significant performance improvement unless it’s purely math with no I/O until the end. This isn’t like when we went from 16-bit to 32-bit. The CPU cores of that time were abaci compared to the modern superscalar, micro-op, out of order execution, branch predicting, enormous multi level memory caches with prefetching cores of today. And as soon as the code tries to access a shared resource, call a device driver in the OS, BOOM any savings will be wiped by the relative “slowness” of the resource.

Sure a nice CPU burn in program that computes primes or Pi to a billion places using only the standard x86 integer and FP instructions will show a speed difference. Same with ray tracing. But real heavy duty math is done as SSSE or AVX SIMD instructions now which doesn’t distinguish the difference between 32 and 64 bit. Program logic isn’t faster. Program branching isn’t faster. At the end of the day, an “average” program will see little discernible improvement in performance between a 32 and 64 bit version.

It doesn’t solve anything, only let a few more people in on the secret.

It solves the problem of people who are not happy with others having the advantage, which is the entire point of this post.

No it doesn’t. How many would try out a open test server in the first few hours it’s up and divine what to invest or divest on the live market? If you’re not “in on the secret” in those first crucial few hours you are back will the rest of the masses wondering what happen to the market. The opportunity will be gone.

So when does the open test server go on line with the change? NA prime hours, EU, Oceania? Some slice of the player population will be a sleep or in work when this goes up and they won’t be able to get in on it.

All this will do is to increase the number of players taking advantage slightly compared to the full player base. Sure you may be able to deny absurd profits from these mythical “inside traders” but in reality all you want is to have the chance to be one of them. It doesn’t “fix” the problem.

As it is there aren’t a lot of players in closed beta (obvious due to the number of day one patches) and this does limit the damage done to the market.

30% cap aging. Overclocking with 1.3volts at 4.5GHz. I get 504 watts recommended, 454 watt minimum. I normally add a 1/3 at least to the minimum which makes it around 600 watts. My preferred PSU makers tend to have either 5oo or 650 watts so 650. That’s my logic.

The HD 7970 can max out in the 275-300 watt range all by their lonesome (Furmark), they do average around 200 watts but you have to take the maximum into account when sizing. As soon as you bump up the voltage to OC power use and heat shoots up.

I’m not disputing the 212 Evo is a great little cooler at $30. Just than on an OC Haswell you will see 70-80C temps where on an OC Sandy or Ivy Bridge it’ll be 10-15C less.

Cash shop model requires lots of bodies playing the game. You don’t need many of them to open their wallet once a month to keep you profitable.

To keep people playing you need to have a constant stream of new content. Things to do. Doesn’t need to be permanent, actually it’s better if it isn’t to get players to show up now for it. If the new content is infrequent or permanent, a player can wander off to try something new which means you could lose them forever, or at least a long time.

That’s the logic behind the “Living World”. Keep people showing up today and hope that a few are willing to buy something with cash.
