RIP City of Heroes
RIP City of Heroes
Don’t worry, the economy will be ok. We put a lot of effort into keeping it protected.
Uh huh, sure……
You uh, read the restrictions on what they can and cant do, right?
Yeah, but I’m not stupid enough to trust that Anet is going to have the community’s best interest in mind.
My issue is not with Anet, but with Nexon’s influence. If you don’t know their history of destroying every game they touch with crazy pay walls then you should look it up. And make no mistake Nexon had some influence here.
Nexon doesn’t have or ever had any influence. Same old crazy talk from someone who doesn’t understand how corporations work. And to beat you to your next crazy talking points.
- Nexon never had any seats on the board of directors of NCSOFT and when they tried to earlier this year they failed. They have no influence.
- Crystin Cox worked for ANet before she worked for Nexon and was hired back before Nexon bought stock in NCSOFT.
You get two tin foil hats.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/95982157-Account-types-Free-Core-HoTAll good! Restricted TP access, can’t access guild bank, can’t mail items, restricted access to chat so no bots. It’s fine, this will work out.
THE ONLY REAL PROBLEM, IMO, IS THAT NEW PLAYERS DON’T REALISE THAT THIS IS A TRIAL/RESTRICTED ACCOUNT, MAKE SURE TO LET THEM KNOW AND DON’T OVER DO IT ON THE REMINDERS TO BUY THE CORE-GAME, IT GETS ANNOYING AF
Apart from that, good move anet, make the trials account thing upgrade as accessible to players as the gem store, small reminders but not annoying popups every login. Also, make sure that you have restrictions on the gem store or the playerbase who has the core ( not trial ) game will get kittened off as gem prices will definitely rise. Also, make sure you can’t get the core ( non trial ) game off the gem store or everything you just did was for naught: They don’t pay money and they negatively affect the economy/gem trade ( if everyone who has trials does it ). Unless you want to make it expensive ( 150g ) but not overly.
Peace
They can sell gems but can’t buy them with gold. But they can receive mail of items and gold.
No they can’t, read the restrictions SLOWER. NO TRANSFER OF ITEMS OR GOLD FOR F2P ACCOUNTS.
RIP City of Heroes
Wealth transfer is still possible for f2p players. Expect to see lots of worthless items be sold in the TP for 10+ gold.
TP item list is restricted for F2P players.
RIP City of Heroes
Free to play players shouldn’t get acess to:
Guild Banks
Buy gems with goldThe price of gems is crazy now if you allow the free players buy gems with gold then the price will skyrocket so high that no one will be able to buy gems again, except for the hardcore farmers.
And we need put more strict behavior rules we don’t want this game comunity became another league of legend !!
Honestly read the FAQ before complaining.
RIP City of Heroes
Likely falls into items at the Gem Shop not available to F2P.
RIP City of Heroes
Wow, look at all those restrictions put in place just to be able to play for free.
If you have to lock the game up that much, why even bother?
It’s hardly much of a lock out.
Content is only level capped for access. No paywalls.
Chat and e-mail has restrictions to control RMT.
No login rewards, limited TP access, no gold to gems in the exchange should secure the economy.
RIP City of Heroes
Never going to happen unless ANet ports the game to an existing multi-platform game engine that supports win and mac.
RIP City of Heroes
Giving f2p accounts log-in rewards is a serious slap in the face. :/
We need an official statement about this that includes all the details. That’s why THEY DON’T GET THEM.
I posted my comment BEFORE that went live.
Then why rush on the forums to post that? What exactly was the point of your post?
Because I’m human and like typing I guess? I’m not sure I deserve to be persecuted for stating that we needed that information sooner rather than later when at the time that information wasn’t available. >.>
But you couldn’t wait a few minutes for the FAQ before declaring how dare they let F2P get login rewards.
RIP City of Heroes
Boy is that super convenient for Anet, nope, no way gem store is changing, for sure.
That’s not the Gem Shop, that’s the exchange.
So F2P can’t buy gems with gold. Sure they can buy gold with gems, which will lower the exchange rate for non-F2P to buy gems with gold. So this is bad how?
RIP City of Heroes
Free accounts can’t mail kitten. Think.
account a sold out a cheap product from tp and add a cheap item for much money his new f2p account can buy to transfer the gold to the main acc

I’m not saying the expansion should be gem-storable. I don’t feel strongly one way or the other, and there are good arguments for keeping it cash-only. What I’m trying to knock on the head is the super-popular and completely nonfactual perception that gold-ing your gems means you just got free gems.
There ain’t no such thing as free gems. If you buy them with gold, ArenaNet’s made their money off of them same as if you’d bought them with money. It boggles my mind that people are still too dense to realize that.
The gems a player buys for gold are free from their perspective, other than the work involved to get gold.
However it was another player who first bought those gems with cash and sold them to the exchange for gold.
For the expansion they want every player to pay cash. However they did throw players a bone with an upgrade from standard to deluxe edition in the store for a premium of gems, 2400 which is $30€ vs $25€ if you pre-purchase/buy online with cash.
RIP City of Heroes
Some players fixate on the strangest things as important.
RIP City of Heroes
Okay, we got a release date now.
Are there any new info about a physical copy of the game.
Or even a collectors edition? So far we only know that it will be available at retailers.
In what form and what the contents are, are still unknown. Can we get some infos there, or is the Pre-Release version all we ever get?
I got some money, I won`t be spending on extended digital goods (aka digital and deluxe edition), since I like to have something to take in my hand.
… sigh …
Nobody bothers to check the FAQ first

Q: Will there be a collector’s edition for this expansion?
A: There are no plans for a physical collector’s edition for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. Heart of Thorns will be offered in Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate Editions (all of which are available for pre-purchase and include digital in-game bonuses only).

I’m guessing they may choose to go over what “challenging group content” means and then unveil the last two elites over the two weeks after that with another BW in 3 weeks.

Browser based, no but WinAuth is a standalone application, no installation required, you just unzip and run it.
I don’t have it running all the time either, just fired it up to set it up and whenever I get a challenge which for me has been once at my house and once at my parents since I went to the forums (I had the “secret code” written down with no indication what it belongs to).
RIP City of Heroes
I think Wooden Potatoes suggested this may have been a mistake on ANet’s part as the tweet wasn’t in their twitter timeline but a private one to various sites and someone talked.
In POI they had to trot out Colin to do a five minute bit at the begining and it sounded very much like it was impromptu segment.

Except it’s not SMS but 2FA you have to sign up for. So someone who set up Google Authenticator or WinAuth can easily manage multiple accounts on a single system.
RIP City of Heroes
Free accounts (without careful restrictions) means both spies everywhere, as well as trying to stuff the opponents servers with dead weight accounts to limit the number of actual players that can get into WvW maps.
Some people will do anything to get an edge.Somebody is taking WvW WAY to seriously.
You must not play WvW or you would know that these are valid concerns. Just because it isn’t the main mode that you play doesn’t mean it would not be a problem.
I play, on Jade Quary, almost daily now. I just don’t live there. I do a half an hour and I’m out to do other things.
RIP City of Heroes
Two weeks to unveil the last two elites. At least one closed beta weekend, more likely two with all elites available for tuning, along side CGC. Then we’ll get open beta up to the release.
We have 8 weeks until launch.

Easy fix. Get paper. Get pencil or pen. Write password on paper. Keep paper in safe place where you find when you forget password.
I have a little spiral notebook.

Yes but I’ve seen times when a game gets it’s UI/text scaled up on top of it’s own settings by the Windows UI scale factor. Didn’t know if this game picks up on that or not.
No other ideas from my end, sorry.
RIP City of Heroes
Check display settings (System/Display or right click on the background, not the background in the game, and choose display settings) and see if you have the text scale slider not at 100%.
Only thing I can think of off hand.
RIP City of Heroes
You can upgrade from the basic HoT to the deluxe edition for gems but you have to buy HoT with cash.

That’s really not that great for the price (which is incredibly common for things from brick and mortar stores), and its GPU is incredibly weak. In addition, it’s got an AMD CPU, which means that it’s not the greatest for GW2. In general, a prebuilt at your budget is going to be really lacking in one (most likely 2) aspects- GPU or CPU (most likely GPU) and power supply. If you really don’t want to build a computer, you could likely just find a prebuilt with a solid CPU and add a power supply and graphics card.
Although, now that I think about it, those Alienware Alphas for $500 are actually all right for a $500 prebuilt; i3+750ti(ish) and I’ve seen them on sale for like $350-400. Even though it’s $500 I don’t think you could do much better straight out of the box with a prebuilt.
That’s the subreddit I had in mind, yes
That’s a Steam box, and actually quite nice for the price. The GPU is a version of the GTX 860M laptop CPU with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, the CPU is the low power i3-4130T.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-alienware-alpha-review
Only drawbacks is it doesn’t come with either a keyboard or mouse and it uses HDMI to connect to a monitor (but since it’s a PC “console” it’s targeted to hook up to an HDTV). It’s sort of upgradable even.
Compared to what you have, it’ll be loads faster.

(edited by Behellagh.1468)
I’m just saying though.
Killing a big boss and something awesome dropping isn’t rocket science. Most games do this now, but with account bound gear so it doesn’t ruin the economy. I think HoT will follow this trend. Not everyone wants to salvage trash for weeks or months on end to finally craft a great item. Mix some gauranteed shinies into the fold.
Then it’s only repeatable with an alt.
RIP City of Heroes
Well with the inevitable post release patching it should be stable with maximum hype for Black Friday for retailers selling boxes.
RIP City of Heroes
The only thing the SMS announcement suggests is that the F2P starts on Saturday.
We’ve seen recently that ANet hates RMT with a passion, so F2P will have chat restrictions and likely a few more CS people whose sole job during this rollout is to smack down reported RMT spammers. So everyone, Report and Block.
We’ve also seen in the past that ANet is very sensitive about the economy. So I doubt that F2P will get login rewards. However I see that both T6 mats and Mystic Coins taking a dive on the TP already as supply balloons so my opinion is in the minority here.
Anyhow we will see tomorrow, so until then, remain calm.

Posted in New & Announcements, but repeated here to ensure that new players are aware of this news:
As ArenaNet President Mike O’Brien detailed in a recent announcement, ArenaNet is committed to protecting your game account.
Effective at 11:59 pm Pacific Time on August 28, 2015, all newly-created accounts will have SMS restrictions. These restrictions mean that you will not be able to use in-game mail to send items or gold, and you will be unable to access guild vaults. If you wish to eliminate these restrictions, simply add SMS or an authenticator to your account and the restrictions will be removed. Account created prior to August 28 will not experience these restrictions.
I hope your restrictions for F2P accounts are not only this. I’d make 10 verified email in 1 day and get 55 laurels each every 28 days, to make 550g. Imagine people with more time. It would destroy the economy.
So, that means even people that pay have to do this? Interesting. I could understand it for the upcoming Free 2 Play accounts. I have it activated. It only asks when my ip changes – which is hardly ever. And yeah, you can use the authenticator instead of an sms.
As for laurels and such, well you’ll have to pay for all those accounts – like you do right now anyway – and F2P accounts will have no mail or tp and all sorts of other restrictions – their is a post on reddit where someone has data mined all the restrictions they are going to put in place. Even if they get free login stuff, they won’t be able to do anything with it. I suspect free accounts will have no logins or different items maybe. I think they realize a flood of free accounts dumping gold into the economy would be bad.
Yes, every new account F2P or HoT, has to sign up for 2FA to get e-mail transfer and guild bank access.
See this from a month ago.

I think we will see why new accounts are required to activate this after Saturday.
Yep. If we needed early confirmation that F2P is going live Saturday afternoon, I think we’ve gotten it.

My point being it’s not going to spike overnight, which sounded like what you were implying.
It wasn’t. I can’t see how you got that idea.
And it doesn’t matter if they buy HoT or not. More people out and about in an MMO is normally a good thing.
And we agree.

Are you creating an account after Friday at midnight pacific time? No? Then why do you care?
While I can understand trying to establish a firewall between your gaming persona and your real life one, but some of the paranoid ravings people have expressed over two factor authorization is downright silly. Unless you are living a nomadic lifestyle mooching off of free wifi to get online or you shut off your cable/dsl modem every time you power off your computer so it gets a new IP address every day, most will validate their IP once and forget about it.

Except the new players won’t have any gold to exchange yet. And with the rate currently well over 20g per 100 gems, any continued rise will simply make turning cash bought gems into gold even more attractive.
Honestly if the F2P accounts work like trial accounts, that would be irrelevant. They can’t use the trading post.
But lets say they buy the game (or they can otherwise use the TP/gem store) and they’re new players.
They earn money in-game the same way the rest of us do.
If it’s more attractive to buy gems with real money, and they have the means and are willing, do you consider that a bad thing?
It’s great for everyone if they do.
My point being it’s not going to spike overnight, which sounded like what you were implying.

I like core game going FTP.This will boost GW2 community by ALOT,which will boost Anet wallets as result, which will bring us more and better content. All of this for a vary small price and that is – not been lazy to spare 2 sec on pressing – block player.
Now all of you are upset about bots and hackers but tell me….does WOW have hackers and bots in some significant numbers?WOW is also same way of FTP as GW2 and we can call it TRIAL.
In WOW,as much as i know, you can download game and play it till lvl 20 without limit. This also means that game can be full of bots and hackers but…its NOT.
Gw2 have trial that instead of locking your levels,it locks your content.Anet is big company and i don’t think they gonna let bots and hackers infest this game, just as Blizzard never did. You’ll like it a bit less when the exchange rate gold -> gems will skyrocket.
Except the new players won’t have any gold to exchange yet. And with the rate currently well over 20g per 100 gems, any continued rise will simply make turning cash bought gems into gold even more attractive.
