RIP City of Heroes

And where outside of college or the back of a truck do you get a legit copy of Windows for $15? One you can install without an optical drive?
And the case may be too narrow for the cooler.

HoT sales should kick up once they ever get around announcing a firm delivery date. Participating in the beta is meaningless for a lot of players. Why spoil the surprise by playing it first to death beta weekend after beta weekend? So they are waiting until there is something more definite than “2015 for sure”.
IGN is the 800lbs gorilla of online gaming news. ANet’s puny embargo means nothing to them. Where is ANet going to go? Kotaku? MMO specific sites with less than 1/10th the daily viewers?
Anyways I’ve been finding this sturm und drang amusing as players dredge up year old data mine text, a video that says little and proceed to blow this way out of proportion.

To get a new player to pre-purchase HoT, they had to include the core game for free.
Now it’s time to get players who wouldn’t fork over that to give the game a try (with restrictions that have nothing to do with game content but likely email trading, chat and anything that could disrupt the game’s economy) for free, in hopes to snag some additional new players who would then by HoT to remove the restrictions. It also doubles as a way to keep the core game world populated as vets take their level 80s into HoT.
There is nothing that allows you to change profession (or race).
I see people are humor impaired tonight since an obvious attempt at humor wasn’t seen as such.
A G3258+mobo is going to be $100, 212 Evo $30, CX430 or other PSU $25, ram $40, HDD $45, case $30, Windows $15, 750ti/7850 or similar $80. OC the balls off of the CPU and you’ll be able to run the game well enough.
It’s definitely doable, but having a higher budget would definitely be ideal.
How much of that rely on rebates? I’ve looked at PCPartspicker. And a G3258 and MB for $100? Ha! Don’t think I want to try a $25-30 MB.
Edit: This is the best I could come up with and it’s $450 before rebates and it’s graphics card is so-so. I’m sure some fat could come off.

Guys That Shaman already said in July that Trail Versions are coming so its not get F2P its just a trial account. http://thatshaman.blogspot.de/2014/07/upcoming-features-from-entanglement.html
“You have reached the trial limit, but you can do much more by upgrading to a full account. Click the “Upgrade” button on your screen to upgrade now!"
July … 2014
ArenaNet … we would have words with thee – Disney
Didn’t mean to harp on you ToriSama, it’s just after nearly 5000 posts not counting the ones in the general Gem Shop thread or other threads, it’s a dead rabbit.
Yes the hand full of headgear that didn’t get turned into available skins have been asked for since the wardrobe came out and for whatever reason, it’s not something the Gem Shop team is exploring,
I’m not one of those opposed to bunny ears in a fantasy game on principle. I’m not even bothered anymore by the daily bumping of this thread. But the constant implying that it once was an actual item, by many of the posters over and over again, that grates on my nerves so I had to say something this time.
Peace out.
The restrictions were datamined by the almighty that_shaman long ago.
Only one or two character slots
Limit of level 15
Seems like a limit on how high a “rank” you can get (specific to trial or possibly PvP related)
Only able to send mail to friends.
Can’t send items or gold through mail
Can’t speak in map chat
Can’t access Team Arenas
Can’t access main WvW maps (EB and Borderlands)
Can’t sell items on TP.
Key phase there is “long ago”. No reason to believe this has anything to do with whatever is planning. And you ignore the sections that clearly use the work “trial”.
I’m not being a jerk, I’m being honest. Maybe brutally so but there are players with systems that are 5-7x more expensive complaining that the game isn’t running “well”. I’m far better than someone spinning a list of parts that in the end will cost way, way more than your declared budget and getting your hopes up then dashing them.
If you could tell us what you currently have then maybe we could recommend a system that is far better but may not meet your nebulous requirement of “well”. But being realistic a new rig, excluding the OS, is at least $500-600 including case and PSU. Maybe a $100 cheaper with sales and rebates.
But a maximum $400 cash on the barrelhead, I don’t see that being possible.
Well “never coming back” implies they were once there in that capacity. That’s my point. Many bemoan their absence as if they were once skins pulled from the shop and never returned. They were never that.
So it’s not about returning, it’s about offering for the first time.
If it somehow gonna happen I can only hope for some kind of benefits for players who already bought the game and make special tag for f2p kittens so I can ignore them..
Why would it matter if they payed full price for a game you don’t have to pay monthly to play or 1/2 price or $10 or free? I don’t understand beyond the obvious vector for RMT spammers that being a F2P player means they will be troublesome rift raft that need to be shunned.
(edited by Behellagh.1468)
I just have a bad feeling the bunny ears are never coming back. There’s been plenty of opportunity to add them after these past 2 years and if they haven’t come back by now… well you know.
I want them as badly as the next person, don’t get me wrong there. I’m just trying to be realistic with myself.
THEY WERE NEVER FOR SALE AS AN ARMOR SKIN!!!
Players who had them as an item for town clothes got them turned into an armor skin when the wardrobe hit but they were never sold as armor skins. You are asking for an item to return that was never there in the capacity you assume they were.
Hate the new time stamp on posts. Useless to spot the true age of a thread with only month and day.
Linking back to my post that lists the only text in the video.
Nothing there doesn’t preclude restrictions to aspects of the game that have nothing to do with PvE/PvP/WvW content.
And maybe I hang at the wrong forums when games went F2P but I never noticed a rise of toxicity that some are bemoaning is going to happen.
Edit: fixed for grammar and brain damage.
(edited by Behellagh.1468)
I imagine this will be coordinated with the release of HoT. When HoT goes live central Tyria will become abandoned except for those still leveling a character to 80 who own HoT and those players who didn’t buy it yet. A F2P core game will keep this area populated.
Didn’t someone mention it said “Limitless adventure”? Would be weird to have an asterisk next to it… unless it’s a small bait and switch.
How does chat restrictions or not getting log in rewards affect access to the world or any map content?
Let’s freak out after the announcement Saturday.
Electro Blue sold at 800g in the last 24 hours. The hoarders are starting to crack.
Also im looking to spend maybe $300-$400 (hopefully that is enough for a pc that can run gw2 well).
Not going to happen at that price. Certainly not “well” depending how you define that term.
Upgrading an existing rig with an alright power supply, sure. New system from scratch? Nope.
Please be realistic.
Still not as bad as the poster who wanted to upgrade his system but spend less than a cheap date on the upgrade.
Yes you’ve said that enough times. There is nothing in the video, which is all we currently have, that says the core game isn’t limited in some way other than content. I would imagine chat limits and no log in rewards to prevent mystic coin and fine materials melt down.
There’s likely a data dump on Saturday after the announcement. Lets hold off of the Chicken little reaction until we know what F2P includes and not includes.
I don’t understand why so many people are surprised, ANET have come out and said it themselves, they’ve shown they want NEW players. I’m guessing the cash shop is making them more money in the long run than box sales. The fact end game is dressing up, putting skins in the store is a great money maker.
I’d figure the current market of active players is saturated, maybe numbers aren’t buying like they used to, why push to a crowd who’ve purchased everything already when you could get NEW players in to buy new stuff AND all the old stuff?! It’s perfect business sense, bad for those who’ve played the game? Possibly, but this is business.
Yes and no. The reason is to make HoT attractive to new people. Have the core content for free lets those players to play more than enough to decide if they would like to buy HoT. Because as nice as ANet bundling the core game in for free, new people are still unwilling to pull the trigger on a fifty dollar purchase without know what the game is really like, not just the first 15 levels of a trial.
Price of the expansion isn’t going to change. Some people.
And they have occasionally discounted transfers before WvW tournaments on low pop servers. But beyond the announced free transfer deadline back in 2012? Nope, costs gems.
How is a raid not a dungeon? I’ve never understood the difference.
Can’t fractals be called a raid?
Because you can’t speed run raids. Plus the complexity of raids imply better rewards.
Yeah, good luck with that.
Hmmm, a title change.
Couldn’t post it the thread on the subject could you, had to make your own.
And now he gets to have the same experience I had without paying a cent. It would be nice if Anet did something to thank their players who have been playing since beta instead of trying to drive us away.
So you’re now trying to say that its unfair because he will get three years worth of enjoyment from the game? Because by that time you will now have six years worth of enjoyment. Unless of course your argument is that he will experience three years worth of enjoyment in a day, in which case nevermind, I didn’t realize I was debating with someone so… special.
Judging from the way Anet is taking this game and trying to get rid of veterans, I doubt anybody will be here for another 3 years
Could you explain how going F2P will drive vets from the game? Somebody? Anybody?
Bueller?
It’s not just F2P that is the issue with vets. There is also bugs that haven’t been fixed in years, dungeons never even touched, and Anet not even knowing their own playerbase and its wants to add to the list
Doesn’t matter. Expand the playerbase by lowering the barrier to entry and hope that this influx will include players who are willing to buy HoT or spend cash on gems. They’ve already said that fractals are the new dungeons and if parts of their playerbase including those going all the way back to GW detest the current game so much that it might just be better to see them go than try to retain them since those players aren’t willing to accept the direction ANet wants to go in.
They will talk to us but IGN jumped the gun two days early. I’m sure the materials they have prepared to post is based on the official announcement.
HoT had a dedicated subdomain.

Because we heard about it a while ago and are probably waiting for the POI video cast to go into the gritty details before dismissing it.
That and we’ve hit the rage limit about the F2P thing.
Calm down, and untwist those panties. What veterans get is potentially new people to play with. We get a game that has more support meaning more money meaning more development time and a better game. Those people may not be paying for the core game but they will bolster the population which is a plus and getting a more extensive demo will likely provoke many of those players to pay up in some way to enhance their experience, but again, maybe not, but we still have more people around.
Knickers twist, panties bunch. Get your idioms right, it’s not rocket surgery.
HoT content in not going to be free, only the original game content.
Like most games that go F2P, there will probably be some restrictions to keep the RMT spammers in check (chat restrictions) and the economy from going off kilter (like no login rewards). They may block the ability to join a guild and may reduce the number of starting character slots.
I never got the reason for all the F2P “there goes the neighborhood” style panic beyond RMT spammers and that just needs a dedicated whack a reported RMT team and some reasonable chat restrictions.
While the reddit post was recent the link was to a page that was a list of stuff data mined in mid July, LAST YEAR.
(edited by Behellagh.1468)
datamined info earlier showed something about a trial account (this could be the F2P).
It also had datamined tidbits of maximum lvl of 15 for free trial (makes sense, only able to get into those start zone lvl 1-15 maps like queensdale)….
Couldn’t speak in map chats or use trading post and things like that either so I HIGHLY DOUBT its a full f2p game lol
Most likely just a free trial.
Thank you kindly for this info. I’m going to believe it until Anet says otherwise on Saturday.
That datamined info is over a year old. It is almost certainly not relevant. It’s probably something ArenaNet considered in the past and scrapped in favor of something else.
Your right its old and probably have some things changed but still. I highly doubt anet will put out a completely F2P, full edition of the core gw2 game….
We will know on saturday thou!
Nooh I said I wanna believe til Saturday! Shhhh! xD
Sorry Candy, leaked trailer just showed the worst thing possible…. fractals, sPvP, WvW, all of it was accessible for F2P accounts…. this doesn’t look good lol. Hopefully some restrictions will be applied but it looks like they will still have access to quite a bit of things….
It showed fractals, it didn’t say fractals. It also showed cinematic footage that isn’t actually part of the game.
The text in the trailer says:
and ends in a title card with the F2P URL.
Stay Classy Anet
https://twitter.com/GuildWars2/status/637001671617445888I was just about to post this. Not even bad, Anet.
I guess they are saying, IGN has skritt for brains.
I like Skritt Happens.
That was data mined months ago. Level 15 cap isn’t F2P, that’s a trial cap.
If you don’t like it report it. It’s then up to ANet to determine if it crossed the line or not. They are the final arbitrators.

Nice. Sadly you can’t punish them, they are one of the few large game review sites left.
Likely no restrictions that they will hang on the F2P player. More initial character slots, the login reward, unfettered chat, possibly guilds.
We’ll see. Content won’t be restricted.
I foresee a thread consolidation in the near future.
Most other games going F2P are coming from a subscription model and converts subscription to a monthly VIP level that eliminates the restrictions they put in place for F2P players. The purpose of F2P is to eliminate the barrier to entry and inherent restrictions of the F2P level riding the border of making the game unplayable and offering enough benefits for a F2Per to upgrade with a purchase of HoT.
Here I would imagine limited character slots, (like 2), no login rewards, chat restrictions to cut down RMT spam, possibly no guild creation or even membership,. no WvW, no trading via mail. That’s off the top of my head.
The one thing it won’t be is an unaltered full version of the core game.
Core game is for free? Does that mean everyone can get 30 of these accounts and get the daily log in rewards (165 T6 mats/28 days)? Or are the login rewards only for those who have paid. Because that would crash the T6 market, if true.
I’m going to say that would be one of the F2P restrictions, no login rewards. Along with no map chat and other chat limits.
Well to keep Central Tyria populated, going F2P makes sense as HoT owners will be either leveling alts in Central Tyria only after running their 80s through HoT content.
In all likelihood the F2P will come with restrictions to limit the impact of RMT like chat limitations (like map), no mail exchange of gold or items, no joining guilds, probably two character slots, maybe a gold cap, no login rewards. Something beyond the expansion that would make a F2P player fork over the money for the whole game.
(edited by Behellagh.1468)
And POOF, we’re now in the bug forum so I will say that it sounds like a bug. But the gem rate was much lower and I had enough gold back when the new exchange was rolled out that I wouldn’t have noticed if it was always there.
The thing is, to have an economy, drops got to suck for most people and someone has to be left holding an empty bag for it to work.
Best quote in this thread. Completely agree for the economy to work.
Not all drops have to be part of the economy. The “best” rewards can be account-bound so only players who do specific content can get them, there is absolutely no reason to give every item a market value.
But then you have players (they do exist) who go: “I don’t like that content, why is the item I want locked behind content I don’t like. The item should be tradeable or it should be achievable through all content.”
And that is one of the fundamental philosophies in the game. That’s where the often misused quote of “play your way” comes from. General rewards aren’t locked behind specific game play types. Combine that with RNG drops and the TP with it’s gold sink you end up with the economy we currently have.
Someone just noticed that if you don’t have enough gold to buy 400 gems, it won’t let you edit the gem amount. There is a thread on the Tech board about this.
Bug it in the bug forum and in game then.
