The threads will be just as funny when the Taimi kits come out again and the people holding the stock scream bloody murder at ANet making their investment “worthless”…
It’s gambling. Only the house wins.
That’s the game with a hold and trickle release strategy. How much can you make before the market collapses when a new (or old) source is introduced.
And it’s not the house (ANet) that wins but the player base as prices plummet.
I don’t think I could hold on to a 1000 gold dye, expecting any minute for ANet to nerf the price by releasing it again. I would be as nervous as an old maid in an asparagus patch.
So you blink and sell to the current high bid or possibly start a price war by significantly undercutting the low sell price. And when the kits aren’t released and the price is now 1500 gold you become full of regret or when the kits return you laugh at those that held on too long and are now screaming bloody murder. That’s the game.

@Zenguy
Well a cursory look at Masterwork quality dyes show the price drop aligns with the new Account kits at the gem shop with either 20 or 30 account bound UniDyes. Since you can sell the identified duplicates, the excess get posted. The 30-40% downward price adjustment happens since players undercut one another when they try to sell theirs first.
So nothing to see other than how a market responds when a new source is introduced.
RIP City of Heroes
I players are still buying it, then price isn’t insane enough.
RIP City of Heroes
Can someone explain the Aluminum Can reference because I’m thinking it’s a generation gap thing.
RIP City of Heroes
Okay follow along.
We all know that ANet removed karma boosters from the gem shop and as a side affect, boosters created with enchantment dust no longer can act as a karma booster, even if it was made before the booster patch.
Now out of nowhere we have package deals that come with a new type of UniDye, one that is account bound. And at least for a time yesterday there was an Account Bound UniDye on the gem shop but you couldn’t buy any, they didn’t have a price. But based on the “value” of the Account Bump/Jump Start kits they look to be 10 gems each.
As it currently is, tradeable UniDyes only have a few limited ways to get some. Bags of Loot from story content; BL Chests; Laurel Vendors; The Mystic Forge using four Rare quality Uni <color> Dyes.
You can always redo LW 2 content in hopes for a drop from one of the Bags of Loot. Or spend 5 laurels. Or RNG 1 to 2 from a chest with a key. Or create or buy four Rare quality Uni <color> Dyes which at it’s cheapest around two gold crafting, if you have Chef at 300, or a bit more buying them off the TP.
So basically tradeable UniDyes are either a time consuming, random or expensive to acquire. 10 Gems each is actually a bargain.
Now if it’s ANet intent to make future UniDyes from these methods to be these Account Bound ones, that basically sets the price cap of the tradeable kind. A price that the current UniDyes are well below.
Now like how they didn’t eliminate any Karma Boosters players already have, I believe they aren’t going to convert in place any UniDyes players may have in inventory and return any for sale on the TP along with a posting fee refund. The AB variety will simply be “new”.
So the way I’m thinking is that the current stock of tradeable UniDyes are underpriced relative to 10 gems. If the cheapest and easiest way to get these is via the gem shop now, why not drive the price of the tradeable ones up? As long as they are cheaper, they are a value. But instead I see what looks like players trying to sell the ones they already have which is driving the price down, not up.
And since gem exchange rates go up over the long term, buying and holding might seem like a good play. But since the Gem Shop change was made Tuesday, the price for UniDyes have dropped while supply has grown. Are some players panicking and liquidating on uncertainty of what might be coming? Are they thinking that any in inventory will be converted in place to the untradeable kind?
Right now 10 gems cost 1.9 gold yet current UniDyes are 75s, a steal if new tradeable UniDyes are going away.
That’s my convoluted analysis.
RIP City of Heroes
@Doam
Of course the price will drop short term. 25 dye kits are 2500 gems or roughly 500 gold now. The cheapest dye sells for 300 gold and you have a 95.9 % chance get 3 or more from 25. People will flock to it like gang busters and we’ll have a tragedy of the commons problem because they will all be undercutting each other trying to earn back at least the cost.
Within 24 hours the price on the TP will be 20% of the current one. Speculators will then buy them up and in 3 months the price will be back to where it is today or higher.
RIP City of Heroes
(edited by Behellagh.1468)
The graphic was likely pulled because they hadn’t decided on prices beyond 10 for 100 gems (SWAG).
But also I fear the the acquisition of current Unidentifed Dyes may go the way of Karma Boosters. And 10 gems is cheap in terms of gold compared to crafting one. And who wants to blow 5 Laurels on one? And they can simply change out the drop everywhere else.
That’s why I think it’s odd players seem to be dumping the current UniDyes rather than buying them up to sell later. It seems unlikely ANet will force everyone to retrieve their UniDyes for sale or convert any already in inventory if they are pulling a booster change.
RIP City of Heroes
If you have to work 8 hours to make 80 gold in a game, you may as well move to China and join the gold farmers…
Even at UK minimum wage, you could earn £60 in that time and buy around 6000 gems, convert those to gold..or just work a couple hours then go play something you enjoy rather than grinding out some pixels.
Even 10 gold an hour works out at slave labour..
your mindset is whats killing video game industry. People like you are encouraging devs to lock more stuff behind gem shops and DLCs.
And how does buying gold via the exchange in GW2 relate to gem shop items in GW2? What’s been unfairly “locked up” behind a pay wall in this game?

Those dyes come from a dye kit that is currently not offered therefore the six unique dyes are all in limited supply. Also dye kits are RNG and therefore it may cost a lot of gems to find a particular one of the six. Part of the current price is due to the limited supply and part due to the elimination of RNG for the buyer.
I’m sure if you want say Electro Blue, it’s worth more for a sure thing than 100 gems a die roll. At a one chance in 25 for a particular dye, you still had more than a 1 in 3 chance of not getting it in 25 attempts. Right now that’s about 460 gold for a 64% chance of getting the one you want. Back when it was still offered it was 350 gems for 25 kits.
Then toss in standard law of supply and demand. We already established a low supply so the range of prices is based on a dye’s popularity.
Combine them all, discontinued supply, different demands and high cost to initially acquire the supply and you get a high price in gold.
RIP City of Heroes
These are obviously targeted at new players who may not know better. XP Booster is obvious benefit for a new player. Keys are the free hit for RNG. In all likelihood they will get a scrap and might try for more. Transmutation charges for customizing your armor look even though you can get them easily enough. Same with the new dyes.
As I said the 10 XP boosters are worth 900 gems in the store and them alone is worth the cost. And the extra 1100 gem premium on the high end package (the extra 100 gems for additional 10 dyes) is a 100 gem savings on the bank slots.
Not so coincidentally the two kits are priced at either the smallest gem package you can get online or number of gems you get from the standard gem card. These are probably the two most common gem packages. So it’s likely they started with those two price points and figured out what items a new player might find attractive. As vets these aren’t all that attractive but for someone starting out?
RIP City of Heroes
Loads of repeated accBound SAB mini’s on Black Lion chests.
How fast people forget..
On another note, the unidentified are acc bound, that doesn’t means that the resulted dye is acc bound too. I imagine that you can sell whatever drops out of it (Celestial for example if you are that lucky).
I think the dye you get is account bond because It says:
“Double click to identify one random dye color, which can be unlocked for all your characters or recycled at the Mystic forge.”
Why specify recycle at the mystic forge instead of saying sell on the trading post unless it’s account bound and can’t be sold?
Shades of account bound SAB minis indeed.
To keep the identified dye market intact? Actually the generic 200 gem dye pack has flavor text that says.
Dyes can be unlocked for unlimited uses to color armor on all characters. Dye bottles can also be recycled in the mystic forge.
So I assume you can also sell the identified dyes as well. We’ll see.
RIP City of Heroes
Boosters last 2 hours. Bag slots are forever.
RIP City of Heroes
Now you have the skin permanently available to apply as many times as you want rather than chaining it from one armor to another.
RIP City of Heroes
If you back figure the costs then the 20 account bound unidentified dyes are worth 10 gems each which is at the moment roughly 2g each if you were buying 200 or 300 gems.
The XP boosters, if you were a new player this might be attractive, pays for the Account Bump kit. This makes the keys and trans charges free not to mention the dyes. As a vet not as attractive since many dyes will likely be dups and are only then good for MF fodder.
I agree about the 2nd kit simply because of the bag slots. Terrible investment IMO, unless they are adding an option to move those slots between characters. Still, 1100 gems (100 gems for 10 more dyes) for 2 bank slots is a small discount even if you hate bag expansions.
Question I have is are they removing the 5 Laurel non account bound unidentified dye or the MF conversion?

$10 in gems exchanged is roughly 110 gold at the moment. At 10 gold/hour would then be a wage of $0.91 an hour.
You have to ask yourself, is farming so much fun that it’s worth saving that paltry amount every hour of every day?

In both cases it was a way to introduce new lore into the game.

Interesting even though I don’t have a problem with GW2, different ISP in CT, the TuneIn stream from the local radio station on I listen to wasn’t terribly stable yesterday. They might use Comcast or also hopped to Boston’s L3 node. Still had problems this morning but all is fine now.

It’s one of those great lies, like making loads of gold off the TP by just flipping anything. It’s super easy!
Flipping can actually be quite lucrative, but you need to really know what you’re doing to see a profit.
Agreed but the narrative from those who dislike the practice is that it’s easy and requires no skill.

crafting should not be time-gated… what happen to “play the game the way i want” ?
That notion only applies to the three gameplay styles in game, PvE, PvP and WvW with the idea that certain rewards for the most part aren’t limited to one of these gameplay styles.
Otherwise that phrase can be used for ever complaint in the game. “I want dueling in PvE … what happen to play the game the way I want?”
RIP City of Heroes
It’s one of those great lies, like making loads of gold off the TP by just flipping anything. It’s super easy!
It is pretty easy. You buy something/craft something then put it up for sale. A week later you get a massive windfall. Unless the markets horribly shift against you. So easy but unreliable.
I said flipping, not crafting. You know, buy stuff from players who sell to high bidder and then sell the same stuff to other players who buy from the lowest seller.
RIP City of Heroes
Sounds more like an issue with Comcast in CT or maybe the L3 gateway in Boston. I’m on DSL in CT with Frontier (don’t judge) and it seems fine. As my PingPlotter shows I’m hopping through Virginia, DC and then onto the L3 backbone.
Here I am hanging in DR.

Basic kit on rares? Are you crazy? At the very least you are throwing away 3 out of every 5 sigils or runes which you can get after taxes and fees a bit over 3 silver each on average (placing bids) because you want to save 60 copper. Also isn’t the ecto recovery rate different for lower end kits? I know BL kits are better than master/mystic/silver-fed I’ve always assumed lower tier kits get worse. We are talking 30 silver for those.

I pretty much salvage everything white/blue/green while yellows and up I first check to see if they are worth more salvaged or sold. That usually means whether it has a nice upgrade or inscription that would drop on salvage.
I only use the MF now for material promotion when it’s financially advantageous to do so with reasonable certainty. That means at least a gold per spirit shard, preferably more than 2 gold per over selling the raw mats before promotion.

So the bottomline to all the agruments, There’s nothing speical about DirectX past 9. If it offers nothing but just extra bells and whistle we all be just on DirectX 9, Nothing should exist past 9.
And for one that said about 32bit. If the client is 64bit it can use more ram. I ran a SL Viewer Client 32 and 64 bit and I had much better performance on the 64bit beacuse my pc had 6GB of ram installed ontop of that is the graphics card and CPU.
32bit Client cannot take advantage of other things a 64bit client could. 32 bit OSs cannot take more ram than it’s allowed. To have more ram you must have a 64bit OS.
No the argument that Dx11 is faster just because it’s Dx11 is false. Dx11 can be faster because it allows developers to multithread the render code so it can scale on CPUs with more cores. Dx12 goes one step farther and allows a substantial part of the driver to be shifted from the OS kernel to the user side so it can also scale alongside the multithreaded renderer. That’s where the majority of the improvements in performance are from, not the API itself.
Dx10/11/12 allows more complicated effects that are slow/difficult/impossible to do in Dx9. But Dx11/12 allows a developer the capability to code their renderer to be multithreaded, something they can’t do at all in Dx9/10. But they don’t just get it for free.

Like I said earlier. It probably would be faster, Dx11 over Dx9, if developers simply kept the same effects and features. Problem is Dx10/11 allowed them to do more complex and additional effects that simply weren’t possible with Dx9 and that, while it upped the “Pretty”, ends up impacting the frame rate. And once people are shown the pretty, they don’t want to turn features down or off.
On top of it what’s “Very High” preset for Dx9 may be streamline when compared to “Very High” for Dx11.

The problem with certainty, from a game design standpoint, is once players get what or as many what they want, they’re done. Not important for a single player RPG but a major problem with MMORPGs as a robust active player population is needed not only as an income source but as an actual form of content. Where would PvP or WvW or instanced party content or boss group events be without a large population of players to draw from to do this with?
As for Spirit Shards proper, well previously I might get one SP an hour from leveling from play and XP rewards from dailies. Now I get 3 guaranteed. Personally I’m satisfied.

I think those who protest to much are concern about tying their game identity to their real world self via their mobile or home number. A one off web email address isn’t tied to an ISP and I’m guessing they don’t check the “remember this computer” to let it build up an approve IP range, because then that could be used to identify them. Nobody is suggesting you need to throw out Dx9 for Dx11 or 12.
And Dx10 was and still can be slower in DDO, it all depends on the options.
See it’s a mix bag. Sometime it’s faster to use Dx10 because it’s less work to do the same thing. Problem is you can now do more and many developers can’t help themselves to add the “Pretty” because they could. So while Dx9 “very high” default settings does A, B and C the Dx10 version of “very high” default adds in enhanced C as well as D, E and F.
Here’s a modern comparison between Dx9, 10, 10.1 and 11.
