It’s closer to $360. But lets look back in time.

Oct 1st, 2013

Incinerator sells for 2450 g. Gems to gold is 3.75g per 100 gems. So you would need roughly 65,400 gems or over $800 dollars. So actually it’s cheaper today, by more than half, in real currency than it was almost two years ago.

If you look at the chart for Incinerator, it’s price has been fairly stable all this time. Right now it’s price is near the low for the last 16 months.

https://www.gw2tp.com/item/30687-incinerator?full=1

Yes, it’s up noticeably since mid Aug 2013 but in terms of cash bought gems, it’s pretty cheap today because the exchange rate has gone up faster than Incinerator did.

As you pointed out it does future proof it. The only drawback, other than cost, is the whole Z170 chipset and motherboard hasn’t really been tested with the inevitable tweaks and BIOS upgrades that a more mature Z97 motherboard has. You will be on the bleeding edge and everything that means.

I think if you could hold off for a few months that the i7-6700K (or i5-6600K) and the Z170 is the way to go. There will be a few bios patches out and supply of Skylake should bring the price closer to suggested retail. Also DDR4 prices may start to go down as well.

But that’s my opinion.

Steam survey says less than 0.07% of Window users have a primary display that’s 4K. So prioritizing things to do that affects the most players, I would say it’s rather low on the list.

Where is this survey? And it sounds like it accounts for 4k monitors, not 4k dynamic super resolution. Because of DSR, I imagine it’s a much larger portion of gamers who use resolutions higher than 1080p.

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey?platform=pc

Your problem is essentially this right?

http://techreport.com/review/27102/maxwell-dynamic-super-resolution-explored/2

In this case it’s a feature support by one GPU manufacturer on only their latest GPU. While obviously more players have this GPU hooked to a 1920×1080 display than players with true 4K displays it’s still a relatively small minority of players.

This site has a tool that finds close matches to more expensive dyes, at least by color.

Flare for instance has the Masterwork grade dye Nectar be reasonably close for cloth, while the fine dye Pastel Lemon is closest for Leather and Metal.

To prevent the OOM crash, turn the model limit/quality to lowest and restart the client after joining the map. Restarting alone should be enough if you’re just doing one event (the more things you have to load, the worse it gets).

This should have been top priority before they started pushing betas because a new expansion is worthless if you can’t even play it.

This problem cannot be fixed without a 64-bit client. Chances are they’ll simply reduce the map population caps in an attempt to prevent it, rather than fixing it.

64-bit doesn’t fix it, it postpones it until your heap outstrips physical memory and performance goes into the loo as it becomes more and more dependent on the swap file.

open world vs ...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Lobby Based uses a hub-instanced design, like how GW did it. You only run into other characters at the hub/city but the various quests are instanced where you won’t run into other players not in your party. Example – GW, PSO

Open World, everyone plays on common maps with few instances. Essentially opposite of Lobby Based. Example – WoW, GW2, a great many MMOs.

Sandbox is an additional descriptor for open world. It’s opposite number is Amusement Park. In a sandbox world many activities are player created rather than premade by the developers (Amusement Park). Example – EVE.

The phrase open world got co-opt as a descriptor for a continuous map with no obvious load screens. This is a technological solution phrase rather than a game design phrase.

Why is it I seem to see these posts every Tuesday?

Because people are bored and subconsciously miss living world with it’s two week release of new content. But they wanted an expansion and that means not a lot of staff working on current content. Oh well.

I think it’s more that people are pretty unused to Anet not promoting some new gem store thing each week.

This is honestly the quietest I’ve seen it in a long time. I’m not sure if it’s a new strategy or they are genuinely that strapped for manpower.

Which is why I think the schedule has slipped. I’m betting they were planning to be much, much further along with HoT and ran out of “filler” material to keep us busy. The stuff they pulled from the store is planned to return during those first few months post HoT launch, or even the anniversary sale, so they can’t bring them back prematurely. Anything new requires resources that may have been assigned for HoT.

Remember when we got Tuesday and Friday Gem Shop updates/sales? Sort of miss those days. I have nearly 5K in gems built up waiting for a sale.

Specializations... Killing the game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Behellagh.1468

As it is each profession has 196,830 possible trait combinations and specialization adds another 196,830. This is just traits. Have the build gurus looked at all of these? See what synergies may be available with certain weapons and utility skills in an attempt to find that min/max combo that the devs missed?

No, what we get are players complaining that the setup they had been using is no longer possible, probably due to the prevention of multiple adepts as well as the pruning and merging of traits into the ones that remain. And in most cases these were builds that were copied and not discovered on their own. The so call “meta”.

Hey, the rules change. I get it, nobody likes their cheese moved but this is the life cycle of MMOs. Stuff changes, players get to respec. Fortunately by level 80 we have enough hero points to unlock every trait and skill, for free now, and we can respec, for free, at will. I’m sure we will all be able to adjust as long as we let go of the past. Those builds of old are gone. Move on already, it’s been more than a month.

Official RP Server for NA and EU

Behellagh.1468

Unless you are into WvW servers are meaningless. The game will dump players from all servers (in a region, NA or EU) onto a single map, or multiple instances of that map.

It does seem to bias the placement in favor of putting people from the same home server together, especially in town.

You can get around that using parties to “taxi” people. Just takes a bit more work.

So not being on TC or Piken isn’t going to screw you out of RP opportunities entirely, it just might make a certain kind of spontaneous play slightly more annoying.

These folks should be able to tell you more: http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/

True, it does try to assign based on server and guild as well but party is pretty much guaranteed to be together when they move to another map.

Sort of. It depends how full a map is although it will do its best to keep a party together.

Key sales are always popular. 20% is the usual amount. Sure it’s a sucker’s game but as long as you aren’t expecting to make money on keys it can be fun, like opening booster packs of Magic.

It’s not spying if you tell people about it.

Wi-Fi Sense only works if your contacts/friends get within range of your wireless network and you can switch it off.

Cortana, to do her job as your personal assistant needs access to your calendar, e-mail, contacts, searches, etc. I got the creeps when Google started suggesting news articles, posted reminders when the cable bill was due, pointed out where my car was parked, etc. but actually it’s more helpful than creepy now.

Diagnostics and Feedback? You mean like how GW2 sends knows your system’s configuration or how every crash report from any software captures that data. My anti-virus and firewall sends back data to their mothership.

You are complaining about Windows Defender? It’s better than not having any Antivirus/anti malware product at all running. Install a 3rd party solution and it stays off.

Again with Wi-Fi sense and yes they don’t need to ask you for access because you already are using their product, it’s in their database already. You expect to use Skype but not expect them to know who you use it with? That’s like expecting the phone company not to know who you call.

I take it that this is Edge? That’s no different how any browser works nowadays.

I’m pretty sure the tin foil hat is appropriate because it isn’t an issue whether they are “spying” on you but the assumption that this information will only be used for “evil” rather than providing you with a better, safer, more useful environment.

I m not just talking about gw2 but gw3 etc etc

you’ll still be able to run previous dx’s if they decide to upgrade, dx12 uses the hardware far more efficiently, and fps boosts of up to 75-150%, it would be in any devs best interest to develop for dx12, yes you have to get the updates, that’s GOOD, because it patches security holes.

As many have attempted to beat it into players heads, the devs have stated that the rendering loop that is calling the Dx9 API isn’t the thread of code that is currently limiting frame rate.

2nd Dx12 gets it’s biggest performance game by allowing more of the driver code run in “user mode” where if the renderer is already multithreaded, can significantly boost performance. Our renderer for all extensive purposes isn’t. That means if Dx12 calls were magically to replace the existing Dx9 calls, we would NOT see that much of an improvement.

Black Lion Keys. Are they worth it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Keys are worth a lot more than 3 gold each. 25 keys cost 2100 gems. That’s 84 gems apiece at it’s cheapest baring sales. That’s about 14 gold each at the moment.

Price and worth are two different things.

Well worth is a subjective value. One can make an argument that 99% of things at the gem shop aren’t “worth” their price in gems or real currency equivalent. But that doesn’t change their objective price. A 15 cent 1/2 litter bottle of water is subjectively worth a lot more to someone dehydrated than someone who isn’t.

If $40 worth of keys only give you a 15-20% chance to get 3 tickets to get a Dreamthistle skin that you could sell for 320-385 gold while $40 worth of gems could get you around that amount of gold, it doesn’t show keys in all that great of a light.

Which goes back to my point that you have to want or not mind the standard fair from those chests if you buy keys. On average I will say their contents are “worth” the 84 or even 125 gems a key cost if you estimate the value of those items in gems but only if you are willing to use those items as the vast majority are account bound.

Not really. Players tend to forget that the gem shop’s primary purpose is to generate the month to month income stream that ANet needs to stay open. Game sales generate spikes in income but that’s not a reasonable way to plan future development as those costs are monthly. So every time someone shouts about the price or availability of an item at the shop and if only they reduce the price or leave it available 100% of the time are ignoring the fact that if what they suggest would actually generate more income consistently it would have been done already as that is in the best interest of the company.

Dreamthistle skins are 320-385g each. That’s roughly $33-40 of gems.

$40 of gems is at best price roughly 38 keys.

The chance of getting 3 or more tickets (in combination of scraps and tickets) in 38 keys is roughly 15.5%. And that’s using the “good” rule of thumb odds. Using the stats from the 350 chest sample that was recently posted that goes up to an awesome 21.6%. Woot.

The conversion to cobs and recipes that use candy corn mitigates that material. We still have 19 million of them for sale but a lot of it is supply priced at or above twice the going rate (around 13.5 million priced above 34 c).

Snowflakes on the other hand have only a few popular uses and dropped in vast quantities as players did those side winter dailies this year. On top of that the shear number of gathering tools that also drop flakes simply compounded the problem. Tiny Snowflakes went from 8.5s with 28K for sale to 5c with 72K for sale in 3 days. And there’s been 11.5 million for sale now. Demand simply wasn’t there. There are over 11 million priced above that 5c price today for sale.

They need to have some kind of bulk snowflake eater. One flake for ice cream or rune or sigil isn’t going to help.

Imagine crafting snowman finisher charges, or a temp mini pet, or a temp snowball mail delivery (thwack! you’ve got mail). I’m spitballing here but you see what I’m getting at, they need to increase demand by some means.

The idea behind knowing multiple 3D APIs is that knowledge can be used to create a neutral API at the render level that requires minimal massaging of data for each specific API. The current rendering code may be pretty entangled with Dx9. Therefore if you want to eventually support additional 3D APIs other than Dx9, you have to tease the Dx9 specific code out of the renderer and replace it with abstract function calls that at first could simply translate to Dx9 API calls.

Also during this process they can look at making the various data structures and classes thread safe which is the first step toward dividing the workload across multiple threads with a balanced workload. That would allow it to scale across multiple cores better.

Like I said earlier, games systems does not mean game platforms.

Please develop a 64 bit client

Behellagh.1468

I imagine this is an issue with your system. I play with everything maxed at world bosses and I never have out of memory errors. GW2 rarely even reaches 3 GB RAM usage of the 16 I can utilise

Not quite. The game is a 32-bit app and therefore has memory size restrictions dictated by a 32-bit system which on a 64-bit OS is ideally 4GB. It simply can’t use the 16GB you have.

But a dev did come along and said that memory fragmentation of the heap can cause an OOM situation because the available heap for data has gotten “Swiss cheesed” to the point that there isn’t a block of free memory large enough to meet the request. A 64-bit memory heap would alleviate this problem.

But OOM can be mitigated to a degree by lowering character quality and/or character limit while avoiding long play sessions.
