Looking at the bang for the buck charts at the above link it shows the GTX 970 is better than either the 8GB 390 or 390X at 1080p resolution and only slightly worse than the 390 at 3840×2160.

Like I said, it boils down to language by PC gamer population, not overall.

German, Spanish, French and English covers a fair chunk of the EU because it is highly likely, do to the polyglot nature of Europeans, that one of those would be understandable if your primary language isn’t one of them.

English, Spanish and French covers the Western Hemisphere except for Brazil. And while being surrounded by Spanish speaking countries just like Portugal, Spanish is likely understood.

So the question is now what is the next largest native language of PC gamers across NA/EU? Then is it large enough to warrant the cost of doing a translation, even skipping the voice overs?

Well in terms of number of PC gamers of that language and not general population. I think Russian is viable but certain issues like high piracy rates discourages game companies from directly supporting it. Of course this ignores the population of native Russian speakers outside of Russia.

I was sitting on 174/175 for years despite having 100% map completion and all the jumping puzzles done. I just couldn’t seem to find that one area that would tip it over. I got it the other night running my personal story. The spot I’d missed was Ulukk’s Hunger, it’s a tiny area that you can’t get into unless you’re doing the Personal Story mission Doubt. If you’re not running the mission you basically have to run up to the closed door and rub your face on it to trigger the area.

Maybe you’re missing the same area? You can find it here: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ulukk's_Hunger

That was precisely what I was missing.

But you can still get the area tagged without the PS. You just can’t go all the way in.

Gen newer i5 Vs older gen i7. Per core, Ivy Bridge (i5) is 8% faster than Sandy Bridge (i7) per clock. HT averages out to roughly 20% boost in core efficiency.

In PvE, i7 is 11% faster.
In WvW, essentially identical with the slightest of edges to the i7.

I hate it when they scale charts to exaggerate differences.

There is a gain but it becomes an issue of diminishing returns for the money the faster you go. DDR3—1866, Cas 9 I believe is the current sweet spots at least here in the US. You might be able to find some -2133 Cas 11 at around the same price but I think -1866 is good enough for a relatively small mark up.

One of the last memory test articles that XBitLabs had before they stopped publishing was testing memory on Intel 4xxx Haswell CPUs. In their 4 gaming tests where they were testing CPU over GPU, -1866 Cas 9 was on average 8% faster than -1333 Cas 9.

NCSOFT only has the four languages for their products in NA/EU, unless the game is being handled by a 3rd party. Then it’s up to that 3rd party to handle the translation. Just like it’s up to the branch of NCSOFT here in NA is charge of the NA/EU translations of AION and Lineage II and soon Blade & Soul.

With the onset of Skylake and AMD’s Zen next year, I imagine RAM production slewing over from DDR3 to DDR4 which will cause DDR3 prices to climb. Bad first impression to new players??

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Behellagh.1468

@Raven – Well I think it was a response caused by players from other MMOs who were use to being led around by their nose and not knowing what to do when simply dropped into the world so they left. ANet saw this as an indication that the player is overwhelmed by the game as oppose to having the motivation of a sloth on Quaaludes. It never occurred to them to just wander, tab to see critter levels, explore all the NPCs to see what they do/offer, etc. They were looking for the big dancing ! or ? over an NPC.

The wiki would be beyond those players. It’s not really their fault, years of being spoon fed in every new MMO that tweaked the WoW model left them with false sense how MMOs are, like where are the mounts? Every fantasy MMO has mounts. And Tanks. And Healers.

As long as you are aware that an i7-4790K only has four cores, most people would simply listen to marketing hype or count the individual boxes in the performance tab labeled “CPU Usage History” in the task manager and say 8.

According to the ANet Game Engine Dev on reddit, the render thread isn’t the bottleneck so having a fast GPU would mean that thread will use even less of a core’s maximum performance. So I can see it using only two cores. I routinely see anywhere between 45-75% depending on what I’m doing and where I am. Higher percentage when around loads of other players.

  • WildStar was a style choice but supports Dx11.
  • Borderlands 2 is a Dx11 game and what you see are consistent higher rez textures and shader effects that can’t be done as easily or at all in Dx9. Of course then it gets “cell shaded” effects, another style choice.

There’s a lack of mid tier mats because it is flyover country.

Nobody was willing to spend any time there except leveling through it. The price of mats isn’t enough for some to go and strip mine those areas or farm for bags regularly.

Low level zones (<25) are frequented because dailies are done easily there and level 80 zones are full because … SW farms. So there is plenty of kitten and T5 mats and a trickle of T6. T3 and T4, forget about it. Players only show up for a boss and then leave for the next stop on the train.

I don’t have a problem with new Teq and I’m fairly casual. I think boss battles should become more and more difficult as the level of the area they are in goes up.

The problem I perceive is that ANet created PvE where formal, coordinated team play is simply not required in 98% of the content and suddenly it becomes necessary. There isn’t content to lead players into this style of play.

The YouTube channel Extra Credits have been doing a multi-part series of videos on social gameplay mechanics in game which includes teaming and the need to design content to lead players into more coordinated social play. This isn’t done here which is why Teq is a shock to so many. What we have roles other than laying on damage? But I want to go hit it, how else am I going to qualify for a chest other than damage? I have to time a jump? Up to this point you and 49 strangers show up and beat a boss into paste, stay out of red circles and you get a chest. That’s where the shock comes in. They need more content before this that lead players into coordinated teams rather than cumulative damage pools to qualify for an orange chest. There isn’t anything that teaches players tactics for a game with no tanks, healers or DPS specialists.

It boils down to GW2 is not like other MMOs. Other MMOs use quest givers as a way to lead players through areas until they leveled enough to leave. GW2 is more sandbox like where you make your own fun. I was an explorer. I wanted to find all waypoints, POI, Vistas and SkillHero Challenges and harvest nodes for cash. If the hearts filled while I was defending myself, great. But this was back in the “good old days” of pre NPE. At the very least all the mat nodes are hidden and I don’t know how much of the those “goals” I had are now hidden on the map or for how long.

I know the goal of NPE was not to overload the new player with things they could do but now it’s like an overprotective parent who won’t let their child out of there reach. But the result may be limiting players just to hearts and map sweeping which IMO isn’t the game’s strong suit and is training new players to be led rather than encouraging free play.

There is roughly 35-40% chance of getting no ectos and roughly a 45% chance of getting 1. 2 and 3 ectos split the remaining chance evenly. In volume, like 100s, this leads to roughly 0.85 per salvage. But in small samples it can vary greatly. Recently I pulled 8 ectos out of 5 rares and times I got only 2 ectos out of 5. A few days ago I got 9 out of 12 which is roughly one short from expected.

But overall since the 23rd patch it seems normal to me as I try to mine ectos for sale.

The PS has three arcs.

The first arc has 3 unique paths based on race. The flavor may vary based on your backstory choices during character creation.

The second arc, second chapter you are given a choice between 3 paths, those three paths are determined by your race but aren’t unique to your race. There are 5 paths in total but each path is shared between 2 to 4 races.

Questions about soloing as a Thief

Behellagh.1468

You describe the combos and tactics that I worked out myself way better than I ever could, I don’t even know the names of most of my attacks, just what numbers to push in what order.

For the longest time when I was leveling my bread and butter was D/P, 3 followed by 2, possibly twice but I would be out of initiative at that point so auto 1s until I could pull another 2. If I attract a crowd, drop a 5 and withdraw when that drops by switching to P/D and shadow step away with 3, triggering the heal/stealth if things aren’t looking good.

But I learned how not to trigger agro running about and choosing targets that aren’t likely to draw reinforcements. Pick off the stragglers. At the time only sword allowed you to hit multiple targets, I think they now allow dagger to do that now but fewer targets than sword. Ran S/D for a while to get the sword kill achievement. Never got into short bow. Maybe I should play with that some.

Questions about soloing as a Thief

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Since I don’t play WoW I don’t know what a Rogue can do to facilitate solo play but I do have a Thief that I soloed to 80.

I believe in general all players do more damage if attacking from the side or behind. There is a thief Adept trait in Critical Strike that increases your critical hit % from the side or behind.

I don’t specialize in stealth but there are builds that seem to be able to maintain stealth for extended periods of time by chaining various abilities.

Leveling, and this was a while ago, I use Dagger/Pistol which allowed my to rapidly close, blind and hit. Having Pistol/Dagger as your secondary weapon set up allows you four weapon combos as I find Pistol/Pistol very useful for times I don’t want to get up close, like champs at boss events.

But your mileage may very. I’m sure someone will be along to say I’m doing it all wrong.

There is two types of RNG in the game, standard loot drop which can drop something that is highly desirable but it’s extremely rare.

Then the content that is advertised up front as RNG like themed dye packs, BLTCs, MF and now the Ecto trader. The MF is there to eat excess items and the Ecto trader, I assume, to eat excess ectos being horded away and stimulate prices of rare gear which ectos are salvaged from.

I have nothing against harder content. What I’m upset about is the notion that wanting to experience said content cold, figuring out how to beat it yourself, along with similar minded individuals, is considered “dumb” while following a guide outlining a particular series of “go here, do this” is considered “smart”.

For me the enjoyment of playing a game like this is to figure it out. However it shouldn’t be so difficult that only players with hyper reflexes using gear that is BIS for that content can succeed. I’m not talking about making it easy for a crowd of newbs in white gear pressing one. But once someone publishes a guide then it devalues the content. It’s no longer “hard”, just tedious, go here, do this, win.

And an account bound skin and title is fair enough unique reward for doing such content, as well as the usual kind of loot that’s dropped from such content. But it shouldn’t be a higher gold per hour rate than any other team content.

GW2 needs a new graphics engine!!!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

I don’t know about anybody else, but I get almost zero improvement in performance going from maxed to minimum graphic settings. Just for giggles the other day I dropped down to 720p from 2715×1527 and I didn’t quite gain 10 FPS. I’m pretty sure GW2 is pretty much straight up CPU restricted and would benefit the more from a bunch of multi-threading optimization than porting to directx 12. In a perfect world, they’d do both and release a 64 bit client version, but I’d settle for some real serious multi-threading work.

You do realise that this is what DX 12 does, its spreads out the workload alcross multiple threads/cores so that the CPU becomes less of a bottleneck, please learn what DX12 does before saying stuff against it

Dx12 doesn’t do this automatically, the game renderer first needs to be multithreaded. The key thing that Dx12 is move more code from single threaded portion of the driver to part of the driver that can run on multiple threads. It doesn’t create multiple threads on it’s own, that’s still in the domain of the developer. It’s just that 3rd party game engines already feature multithreaded rendering for Dx11 support. You leverage that for Dx12 and voila.

The graphic options are there for a reason, how would adding support for better shaders or DX break the game for anyone?

It wouldn’t but the code currently isn’t structured to add additional API support. DirectX 9 limits how complex the shaders can get. So until they can restructure the code for DirectX 11 and beyond. There is a Reddit thread that someone linked to earlier in this thread from the ANet engine dev. I’ll quote the API part here.

As for DX9 and 32bit: Moving off of DX9 wouldn’t buy us a whole lot performance wise, as all interaction with DirectX is happening on the render thread, which is generally not the bottleneck. Moving from 32-bit to 64-bit also does not really buy us a lot performance-wise. There are some optimizations the compiler is able to do with 64-bit that it can’t do otherwise, but the actual FPS gain is minimal at best.

If you are talking about their decision of using cartoon like style and color pallet vs something more “realistic”, that’s simply a style choice. The minimum specs they are targeting may influence the decision since lower the minimum specs, the larger the pool of potential players.

It also where you want to spend your polygon and texture “budget”. FF XII has really nice characters but the world is rather, simple. WoW especially targeted low end laptops as viable platforms when it launched in 2004 although it has gone through a facelift or two over the decade but they do a fair job of hiding it by using a more cartoon like style and pallet. WildStar, Carbine was founded by ex-WoW developers, liked the cartoon style but upped the polycount to start with.

Not every game needs a photo realistic world.
