I call shenanigans… clearly you are not an asura, but a charlatan. A REAL asura would never refer to their progeny as “children”. That is simply inconceivable.
Now if you will excuse me sir, I have some houses to crush. Please pass me that ale mug over there.
Thanks.
It’s Tyrian pronounciation… not norse. I think we can give them some creative license on this one.

- This workshop is too small for the two of us: Make a core crafting hub inside your “home” part of the city, or separately, but make it an instanced area. Add optional dialogue, so you can finally tell those pesky vendors to go home and have kittens play while you craft.
I really like this idea! While I do NOT think that the vendors and crafters should be moved out of the common areas of the city, I would love to see implemented something where in your home instance it recognizes the two crafting skills you have selected (if any), and will place the appropriate stations and vendors in an area. That would give those seeking solace while crafting a place to go, and give us more reason to spend time in our “home” instance.
Yup. I always make my guild wars characters as tall as they can be (since GW1). Even my Asura is as maxed as he is going to get.
At least I am easy to find, just look for the giant purple norn.
Though I carry 3 pistols on me (two matched with different stats for dual pistol set up, one with a different stat for pistol/shield), my rifle is what I love the most. Comes in handy for so many things, including jumping puzzles!
Oh yeah the damage is pretty decent too. I always keep mine upgraded every 5 levels.
I know I did not tell you ahead of time but….
See! Told ya!
I absolutely love engineer. I am so glad I went with my gut and tried it that first beta weekend. I have been hooked ever since.
Elixir H: Drink Elixir H to heal yourself and randomly gain protection, regeneration, or swiftness.
Toss Elixir H: Toss Elixir H to randomly grant protection, regeneration, or swiftness to allies.
Elixir B: Drink Elixir B to gain fury, might, retaliation, and swiftness.
Toss Elixir B: Toss Elixir B to grant fury, might, retaliation, or swiftness to allies.
Elixir C: Drink Elixir C, converting all conditions into random boons.
Toss Elixir C: Toss Elixir C, converting one condition to a random boon for allies.
Elixir U: Drink Elixir U, gaining quickness and a random utility skill from another profession.
Toss Elixir U: Toss Elixir U, creating a random spell at the target location.
Toss Elixir S: Toss Elixir S, either making allies grow and grating them stability, or grating them stealth.
Elixir X: Drink Elixir X, becoming a rampaging brute or a whirling tornado. Underwater become either a withering plague or a whirlpool.
Here’s how I break it down.
Elixirs B and U… self used for speed buff. Elixir B tossed at myself, or someone around me for a speed buff.
Elixir S to help escape from things, quickly followed by Elixir B for speed buff.
Elixir C to get rid of conditions on myself… If I am not up, I cannot get you up.
Elixir H…. self explanatory. Ok so I get an extra speed buff from time to time. Usually not when I need it, so I never rely on it.
Elixir X- rarely used by me, because if I am in a group setting I concentrate more on AOE, and will usually drop a supply drop so I do not have to slot in the healing turret in number 6.
Now one common theme you will notice in my explanation…. At no time do I rely on the randomness of each elixir. I treat the random boons as just that… serendipity. I never plan my gameplay as an engineer around the “possibility” of getting a boon.
While I am certainly not accusing anyone of doing so, just something to remember as we play engineers.
Hi… Just going to leave this right here ok?
Maybe they are confusing GW1 with SWG (Star Wars Galaxies)
Yes, they are. I was in SWG… when they came out with the combat upgrade and then the NGE (alleged “new game enhancements”), that basically killed the vast majority of the population, and led to its ultimate demise. I was there… 8 grueling years lol.
As for Guild Wars 1, It is still going strong. I actually picked up the title last July (2011), and still play it (though admittedly not as much as GW2).
(cues the rimshot)
He’s here all week folks. Don’t forget to tip your barmaids.
This is the second game now where the race I chose gets the Carlton dance… (first game was Rift).
It’s silly but I don’t really care. It’s not like people will see my real life dancing skills (or lack thereof).
Click on empty space.
Sounds crazy but if you deselect your target, you stop attacking… so simply left clicking on the ground or open space will do the trick.
Just going by the Vigil alone, I would say Warrior or Guardian. If you plan on being more of a soldier type… Warrior.
Where is it headed? South… literally. I foresee them adding the continents of Elona and Cantha back in at some point (both of which are south of Kryta).
In the mean time, enjoy your leveling, explore everything, and participate in everything you can! I am up to level 67 and still having an amazing time! WvW is also so much fun, though admittedly I am too caught up in the personal story right now to spend much time in it.
I have 8 characters that I take turns on. Three are human (meant to be three sisters), 2 are norn with different backgrounds, one charr, one sylvari, one asura. Since the male norn is my namesake (Bel Geode), he is the one I am concentrating on leveling to 80 first, and the one I do the most exploration on. The others do not get neglected however… In fact just yesterday I was working on 5 of the others about 2 hours at a time.
I expect the three sisters will be the most repetitive, since their background stories are meant to be similar (only one is on a search for their parents, the other two always wanted to join the circus). The fact that they are different professions (ranger, elementalist, mesmer), allows me enough playstyle difference to make the repeat experience worthwhile.
On my dream list for GW2 is a unique cash shop item that we had in GW1, called mercenary heroes. For those unfamiliar, what that did was allowed you to use your fully leveled characters as companions for your other characters. I have a feeling ANet can do this, since a lot of personal story events, and some dynamic events have NPCs assisting us, and I would love love loooove it if ANet decided to give us the option to run around with our own alts once more….
But I am not holding my breath on this one.
Here is one for you from Lornar’s Pass…
This was something I suggested before too. While I personally do not like to see my own name, it is useful to “make sure” your guild tag is showing, if you are not a pet class.
I am not too surprised that people are asking for this, I had at least 3 guild members ask me how to turn their names on.
I have seen a lot of people in Divinity’s Reach at the tavern near the entrance (I forget the name of it, and I am not home to log in and check). There is also a semi popular area in Hoelbrak where you will find people (it’s near the great lodge).
I imagine the word will get out soon and people will start congregating in more areas. The main tavern in Lion’s Arch (the one with Captain Smash) seems to be fast becoming an RP area as well.
I have the largest possible norn height, and was able to do this one with little problems. Yes the camera is a bit wonky in there, but I was still able to pull it off and get the achievement. I have been in there a second time to get the harvestables.
Icky has a point… since we have multiple characters, each CAN be set to rep a different guild. If it becomes that much of an issue then I would probably do the same thing- ask whomever coming in if they can dedicate a character to rep for us. Of course they do not have to play on said character at all really, which puts us back to square one.
I have not heard anything definite yet (and I am always checking their twitter, fb, dev tracker, etc).
If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that we probably have about a month or so before they remove the free aspect. There are still way too many people coming into the game, so the populations have not stabilized yet.
Dying should not be punished so much (in terms of silver) so I think the nearest waypoint should be free if you have died
discuss
Dear OP… The death penalty is largely laughable. Ok so you lose a little money.
Would you rather this game reinstate the old “corpse run”? I don’t know how old of a player you are, but I used to hate having to run back out into the world to find where I died, so I could loot my own corpse. In SWG it was even worse because I was naked (underwear), so everyone knew I had died. Talk about the walk of shame.
1- To change your home world, when you log in to character select on the lower left corner is a button for world selection. When you open it you will see a list of servers. Pick one and the option to transfer appears.
2- As far as I know it is still free. How long it remains so remains to be seen. If I had to make my best guess I would say at least for a month or so, till the population of players stabilizes. Right now there is still a mad rush to get into the new and shiny game, and not everyone who is “unimpressed” has left the game yet.
Sidenote- I have discovered that no matter what server you are on, if you have friends on other servers and you group with them, you can still run into them on overflow servers. I have actually run events with people in other servers because we were both in the same zone and both sent to overflow.
I have one person in my guild who does not represent our guild, because she is in a wvw pvp guild also, and is constantly in the wvw maps. I am not about to kick her out however because she is a good friend. My task as guild leader is to get the other guildmates comfortable with the game (I have a lot of ex Star Wars Galaxies players trying to adjust to this game). It is my plan when we all get decent level and skill proficiency to hop into wvw more often, at which point I am sure my friend will start repping us.
I admit it can seem a little frustrating to have one person not “playing with the team”, but I cannot really blame her. She is doing what she loves in game, and it is making her happy.
I am going to have to go with Kodan on this one… giant freakin polar bear with armor? Yes please!
I would love to see town clothes become craftable… perhaps the recipes can be found in world and tailors, leatherworkers, and armorsmiths can craft various skins for people.
That is actually what I thought they would be, in addition to being bought on the B L T C.
I think it is mainly subjective. Personally I do not pay attention to most of it. When I do my jump shot, it has actually become commonplace for the real life me to make the same yell that the norn me is doing as I jump. (I use it mostly with jumping puzzles).
I did make a suggestion one of those beta weekends that we get a toggle to turn off our own voice (and/or those around us), but I do not think it made it in… yet.
TBH I am not quite sure what you mean. I always thought the running with my rifle (or pistols) in hand WAS the animation! It looks natural on my engineer. Now when I am SHOOTING and running I get a totally different animation.
You know what would be nice, but falls under the wishful thinking category… If the choice we make on which spirit to follow would unlock the elite for said spirit (thus making it so we do not have to spend skill points on it)… The catch being, you still cannot utilize the skill till you hit level 30.
@Irishbrewed-
The closest waypoint to it is Taigan WP, and the homestead is slightly east and north of there. It is marked by the POI “Victor’s Point”, and there is a heart there to “entertain and protect the children” (It is the one where you can pelt them with snowballs). Just hang around a little while and listen to the kids.
Pretty much all the events of that area center around the mischief these kids get into while their dad figures out what to do with himself because his wife is out, and he is overwhelmed.
Instant classic!
Challenge accepted……
Well done sir. I will be referencing this in one of my blogs when I get the time.
I have to agree with you on this. I slotted that trait in, and it has actually been a sleeper hit for me…. especially since mobs seem to love to go after my turrets first, and always melee. LOL.
Hillarity ensues.
I have yet to figure it out… all I know is that bear is proud of me. I can feel her little tail wagging in my heart.
I do know that first part of the story is based on whether you chose to defend the mists, or fought ancient foes, or the third option- honor the spirits.
Your second story part is based on whether you passed out, got into a fight, or lost the heirloom.
I actually wrote an article about this entitled “I want a norn girlfriend” (on talktyria dot net if you are bored). This was part of what I was getting at, which is why I love the norn culture, and proudly play my main as one.
The kind of relationship that I consider true partnership is best defined by their outlook on life. You marry your equal… and together are truly epic… Not to mention have legendary kids together lol.
As an amusing sidenote- The series of events in Wayfarer Foothills, with the one dude at home with the kids is one of the most fun event chains I have ever played! I plan on blogging about that one really soon. It definitely deserves some special mention. LOL
For now, let me see if I can find Eir’s number. Maybe she will want to meet up at one of Knut’s really good moots. I’ll bring her some loot, so I do not get the boot.
I’ll drink to that!!! Go norn or go home!
<————— me
Bel Geode, norn engineer extraordinaire!
I have been championing the cause for more “rubenesque” female figures. I have seen some rather nice norn BBWs, that I think would be great as player bodies too, but so far no dice.
Come on ANet, show the big girls some love please…. norn and human!
Yes OP, I can personally vouch for the wealth of roleplay and roleplayers on Tarnished Coast. Go to just about any pub in Tyria, or any major city and you will most certainly find roleplayers there.
It’s actually been one of the best experiences thus far in a RPG, that I have had. This community is very creative and accomodating.
5? I have 9… and it is still not enough for me lol.
But yes, ArenaNet needs to make money somehow, they can make it from me with character slots, and clothing/transmutation stones.
Home World: Tarnished Coast
Guild Name: Sanctuary Of Hope
Guild Website: What is this… web site… you speak of?
In-Game Contact: Me. This is the only name you need to remember.
Focus: PvE, WvW, Kegbrawl (eventually), Crafting
Quick Notes: Sanctuary of Hope [SANC] has its roots way back in Star Wars Galaxies, as a large pve/pvp guild on Naritus server. We existed throughout the entire 8 year span of the game, including beta testing. These days we keep it small and tight knit, for the best experience possible. We welcome any friendly ex SWG players, and their significant folks (friends or families). 18+, and we do have our own Vent.
We’re not trying to be the biggest and best guild out there… we’re just here to have fun and make lasting friendships.
snip snip
Sorry to say OP, but it sounds like you are playing it all wrong.
1- Yes we only have 3 “weapon choices”; dual pistols, pistol and shield, and rifle… but we also have all those kits which it sounds like you have not explored them all. If you want AOE, you have bombs, you have grenades, both of which are superior at DPS. I can regularly tackle multiple mobs at once with either kit, and a LITTLE bit of Kiting, to make sure they are not all stacked on top of me.
2- As an engineer I do not want to be melee. My best survivability comes from the ability to be versatile; to weave in and out of range, and get the most bang for my buck. If I have to go melee, I can either use the tool belt, or as you mentioned the flamethrower. Do not forget that flamethrower has the number 4 skill to create a flame wall in front of you (which you can put RIGHT in front of you), and the pushback on number 3, if you have too many people in your face (it is a cone pushback, not single person).
3- Make sure you keep your guns updated, otherwise, yes it will take 30 seconds to kill something. If your rifle or pistols are properly leveled, you will find life is a LOT easier for you. Also do not underestimate the turrets. They all have specials which can be used to burst damage, or knockdown, or immobilize/ cripple. Use them… make love to them… they are your best friends.
4- Auto Attack. The tool kits do not have auto attack set up by default, but guess what… you can ACTIVATE auto attack by simply going control + right click on the button you want to be your auto attack (usually 1). It works on almost every kit… I use it with grenades, elixir gun, flamethrower, even weapons I pick up like the dredge sonic rifle.
5- You want to be a 5 v 1 engineer, invest in some toughness, but more importantly go condition. If you have stacks of condition duration and damage, you will find life goes smoother. This is especially useful as a dual pistol engineer, since most of your weapon skills already put conditions on people. Not many classes can faceroll 1-5 and stack a bunch of conditions straight off the bat.
6- Never underestimate the shield… You have a built in knockback that is AOE, as well as what I call “the Captain America shield throw” on number 5 that goes in a straight line out then back for double damage. You would be surprised how handy that comes in. In my set up I always keep a healing statted shield and a strong condition statted pistol, two pistols with stacking abilities (one has a might stack, the other has a condition stack), and a healing statted rifle for when I need to get medival on their buttocks.
I hope you think about some of these ideas before writing the engineer off, because I am telling you, I have been an engineer since that first beta weekend, and I have never had so much fun as I do with this class. It is immensely versatile, you just have to LEARN how to use it well.
This sounds like a classic case of “working as intended” to me. I am pretty sure that this happens to prevent botting and gold farming. I could be wrong but I am almost certain that this is intentional.
Some possible suggestions:
(up to you if you want to explore them)
1- Raise your toughness stat.
2- Use more ranged weapons, and swap to melee when you see an opening.
3- Use dodge more.
Btw it is norn, not nord.
Right click their name and block them. You will also get the option to report them.
Cats, and by extension Charr, are better at seeing moving than stationary
victimstargetsobjects. What you’re seeing is simply a cameraman who’s too scared to back away from your character.True story.
Best answer all day right here.
Also make sure you bug report that OP. It is probably not supposed to look like that.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or not, but there are events where portals open up in areas you may have already visited…. for example the monastery where they brew ale. If you see that event happen, successfully complete it, and it leads to the 3 portals in the swamp, which then leads to the shadow behemoth. As for what triggers the invasion of the monastery, I have not stayed in Queensdale long enough to find out. (I am a norn)
Well yea, that’s why you normally have 1 tank, 1 healer and the rest DPS. What is the problem with that? Why reinvent the wheel?
Says who? The same people who decided that today should be Thursday?
I don’t follow your logic on this one. Just because “other games” do it, or have done it for years, does not instantly invalidate what is being done here. I’m telling you that once people embrace the idea of being fluid in combat, this thing works, and works well.. I live it every day with my guild (largely composed of ex SWG players).
I personally am happy with the label “Engineer”… I do not need any other labels attached to me. If I want to tank, I go close in and tank, if I want to heal, I swap kits and heal, if I want to do damage, I break out the grenades, bombs or the flamethrower. I have the CHOICE… It is not dictated to me what “role” to play, I am playing the “role” of an engineer… and doing it well.
But to each their own. One of two things will happen. Either you will give it a shot and adapt, thus finding a better gameplay experience for yourself and those you choose to group with…. Or you will choose NOT to adapt, and shortly be no longer playing GW2. Luckily for you, there is no monthly sub to cancel. If it ain’t working for you, I am sure you can find something that does.
Personally, I hope you stay… You sound like the kind of guy who can hold his own in a fight… just don’t expect to do it alone… you have 4 other people who can also hold their own, if you will work with them and not expect them to cater to you as a “tank”.
I picked a Warrior because I wanted to be the person who does damage at melee range, wears heavy armor and can take a beating. If I’m not supposed to take a beating, then why am I able to wear heavy armor and use a sword/shield?
You will find very quickly that one trick ponies in this game end up dead… Gotta learn to be versatile to survive. No one says you CANNOT be the guy with heavy armor, lots of TOUGHNESS stats, and use the sword and board set up. However you will find that the nature of combat in this game requires you to think on your feet. What if you are being attacked across a small chasm that you cannot leap to by say… a ghostly ranger? Now what… throw your sword?
No… switch to rifle or longbow and chew him up, till he decides to hop over to you, then swap back to sword and board and get all up in his face.
I am, of course speaking of Master Ranger Nente- in Ascalon Catacombs. He is a perfect example of why ONLY being a sword and boarder is largely pointless.
Again, think outside the box… and don’t forget you have four other people with you who are also supposed to be swapping around. They can all see your health bar, they should be stepping up to the plate and taking aggro if you are getting low, and you need to be falling back to get your strength up again.
No one class has the monopoly on aggro here. Everyone is going to be rewarded anyway once the battle is done, so learn to adapt.
I promise you… it DOES work!
Freedom from one set role IS freedom!
(edited by Bel Geode.8129)
The reason I grouped up was to work as a team and clear the content. Why would I spend all that time searching for people only to forget about them during a fight, or say not “rely” on someone?
In my opinion this just trivializes a very important aspect of RPG’s and thats the “Role” aspect.
This is a response to the people saying that groups are every-man for himself.
I think you may be misunderstanding what we are saying. Having a heal means you are primarily responsible for keeping yourself alive. It does not mean you are on your own. Just about every class has something that can heal other people, and are willing to use it if needed. The point of being in a group IS to work together. If your group is not doing that, that is on them. They should be doing solo play if that is the case.
Working together in this instance means that we all have THREE ROLES that we can swap in and out of in the heat of battle- Contol, Support, and Damage.
So yes, Guild Wars 2 very much has the roles you expect to see in a roleplaying game… You just need to think about it differently.
As Master Yoda would say- “You must unlearn what you have learned”. If you stick to the WoW mentality of what a group is, you will likely find frustration and disappointment in this game.
