I can see where they’re coming from but my point stands that if someone stands to gain substantially by botting, they’ll find a way to continue to do so no matter the length of the punishment. Not many people are that determined which is why there’s more legit players than those breaking the rules by making money off a game and therefore the ‘minor’ botting offences are more easily forgiveable.

Actually it has been proven that temporary suspensions are more effective than permanent bans when dealing with most botters.

Source? All the ones I’ve dealt with in the past have simply returned once the ban’s up or got a new account/MAC/HWID to bypass. They generally have enough disposable income to fund such habits that most normal players couldn’t – sometimes through their exploits/botting. If someone really wants to bot, and it’s a means of income, they will find a way to do so.

Now, the whole instances thing: For a lot of the map I would keep it constant, but I would not allow mobs to respawn once they are killed. This really annoys me.

This is what the change in instancing has brought about – if everything stayed dead once you’d killed it, what about someone coming in the map after yourself or you entering a map only to find everything already dead? This is why mobs respawn. I personally don’t find the respawn incidence to be too fast, therefore if you’ve cleared a path, you can easily get away before anything respawns. Party-based instancing would only isolate you more from other players as no one could drop in and lend a hand, plus world bosses would be… well, let’s just say I’d like to see a 5 person Teq run succeed

I can in part sympathise with how you feel – I loved GW1 and did most things with heroes aside from elite areas (I preferred speed clearing and people for that – I know others who would do heroway and still do). When I first started GW2 back in August, it felt weird not to have any support in a game I didn’t understand with a character I was still learning how to use. As time’s gone on, I’ve realised that how professions are more self-sufficient now, I was already partially doing with my GW1 builds a few years ago. It’s a pain not being able to move my heal off the middle of my bar or arrange skills in a sequence I feel more comfortable with, but the being able to look after myself in the absence of others is actually pretty cool and makes it feel more of an accomplishment when I do something solo. Mind you, it’s helped by the fact that my main is a Necro who I’ve focused on since I started playing. I have 3 80s now, a 60-something Mesmer and a handful around 20-30 which I use my Tomes of Knowledge on which I get from doing dailies. Thing is, Anet did warn a very long time ago before GW2 came out that it wouldn’t be like the first game. The shock of how dissimilar on the surface can make you feel like it’s something entirely different until you take stock of similarities.

I guess for me how I played GW1 hasn’t changed that much coming into GW2 – I still hoarde materials, enjoy downing bosses whenever the opportunity arises and I’ve yet to touch dungeons and fractals past a couple of runs with the guild when timezones collide properly (being from the UK myself I appreciate how tough it can be on NA servers to bump into enough people for content, especially if your guild is NA-based). I’ve managed all the story so far (including HoT), still use Wiki and external sites to help refine my gameplay and still have a lot to do. 1-80 in GW2 is like the starter area in GW1 – get done with it asap, then enjoy the game in its fullness. The exp past 80 comes in useful for mastery experience. Even 1 Lv 80 character on an account can change your experience with different/more challenging dailies as well as access to new content. Guilds are also, or should be, a massive help with you understanding the game better and what the ‘smart’ moves are in terms of gameplay. If you’re in one that doesn’t fulfil your needs, find one that does. Just don’t be offended if someone refers you to Wiki seeing as some explanations can be long-winded.

The thing that amuses me is that it’s a ban for 181.7 days, not a permanent ban. It’s not even half a year. Mirror of the video is pretty hilarious too. ‘We won’t take down any of the videos’… priceless.

But the tengu already have a city… we can’t access it, but they have it.
Don’t think it is in their lore to have floating cities.

Aerie was on the ground. According to the wiki, they used to be able to fly but long ago lost their ability. However, with the invention of airships, helicopters and gliders, they could have sky-based settlements. I remember in the Tarnished Coast there were massive stones suspended in the air which would be pretty cool for Tengu settlements.

Attending the pug led runs is actually good practice for doing a more organised run. All the TT runs I’ve been on in the last week or so have had people teaching, forming squads and generally taking down at least one wurm. Even if you don’t get all 3 heads down, you learn the different tactics as well as grabbing some AP. I’ve been learning them myself as I need the related MP seeing as LS2 achievements are doing my head in.

Please read the comments before you post yours. We’ve already addressed the teleport vs mount issue. If you’re not going to read up on the conversation, don’t expect us to entertain your uninformed comments out of the blue recesses of your mind.

And yet saying that, you haven’t read all the posts yourself and haven’t answered this question which people have repeatedly asked:

Soleil: You suggest that “Mounts will save this game”.

Question:

  1. What do you propose the game need saving from?
  2. How will the introduction of Mounts facilitate this redemption?

vesica, please refrain from promoting other games on forums.

Uh, you can mention other games. I saw no promotion (i.e. telling people in large numbers to play it because it’s ‘better’), only pointing out what another game does that’s different.

I’m still intrigued as to how you think mounts themselves will ‘save’ the game and solve the issues in each area. As far as I can see, mounts won’t ‘save’ WvW for example. It won’t make mobs easier in HoT for those who struggle. It won’t make the 10k drinks for Wintersday Presence any easier/cheaper.

ANet have plenty of money, they’re just not directing it as wisely as a lot of people feel they should. Mounts wouldn’t necessarily solve that, no matter how much you’d like it to be that way. There are loads of other things that would fit more fluidly (and are more desired) into the game that would generate the money you claim ANet needs to ‘save’ it.

THANK YOU FOR GETTING IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since you did not post a before picture of what the server statuses were before HoT launches or even how often you checked the server statuses, it was impossible to tell on your OP what the exact cause of the server drop was. It could have been ANet raising the server caps (still might have been and they just overestimated the number of players who would buy HoT), or could have been activity dropping off, or a combination of the two.

I personally don’t take much stock in anecdotal evidence that isn’t backed up with hard to doctor evidence. People’s perception and memory can be faulty, so it isn’t that I think people are intentionally lying.

Quite. I joined the game a month or so before HoT and a lot of the servers were actually ‘Low’ not ‘Medium’. Only full server was Blackgate with 3 ‘Very High’. I didn’t take screenshots as I was too busy wanting to start playing :P

Also, OP saying they’ve got my information is quite creepy. I thought they were going to quit a couple of weeks ago but seems that thread was as truthful as this one.

It’s actually legal to give alcohol to children over the age of 5 in the UK, illegal for those under 18 to buy it though. If you’re serious (which I doubt you are), you’re better off complaining like this to alcohol advertisers rather than a game seeing as games have a lesser impact than advertising (more people see the latter). I’ve had alcoholics in my family but I’ve not got my knickers in a twist about this. It’s a matter of perspective. As long as you know what the dangers of alcohol are, what’s the problem? I can’t drink any more and I like being able to in a virtual way without any of those pesky repercussions like being date kitten d. If I can enjoy this without being triggered by my past issues with alcohol, I suggest you build a bridge and get over yours.

Exactly. ‘Causing distress’ is a very loosely worded term and one could apply it to the smallest of things. Obviously people aren’t banned for those smallest of things and so it should be. As the days pass, this spoiler stuff is becoming a smaller thing and wasn’t even that big a thing to begin with. People asking for 60 day bans… That’s incredibly sad and if you deem it that serious an offence, I think you need some help. This plot could be spoiled for you literally anywhere.

Cause distress within reasonable bounds of tolerance. My point is that this is becoming day by day outside of those reasonable bounds of tolerance.

Trust me, people are not banned for simply distressing another player. That’s evident from these very forums, this thread and in game.

I don’t agree with dictating what people can discuss in map-chat that isn’t already covered in the EULA/ToS, but if pushed for a time-frame I’d say the day of release should be the only day any punishment is implemented for spoilers. If that’s too harsh, my absolute limit would be the end of the film’s opening weekend. Because true fans who really care about film spoilers to the point that their mental health would be affected would have seen it by then.

Spoilers are everywhere. As people have said, many websites have published spoilers and this sort of thing happens in other places who won’t do anything about it so you could see it by chance elsewhere. Seriously. Please get some perspective; as the days go by this thread seems more and more ridiculous, sorry.

When a game required a player to sit tight in front of the computer 2 hours+ straight otherwise you can’t finish part of the game content or aquire some item. It is no longer a game. How many 2 hours we got pet day? Thats 1/12 of our life and it is crazy demanding.

Last i check my play per day i am still sitting at 2hrs per day but you know what? I am already playing more than 55% of the whole player base. Yet i am not able to run any contents that require 2 hrs+. That mean there are majority of players are much casual than Anet expected.

I actually prefer RNG and TP when it comes to item aquire. At least the contents are reasonably created. We are not forced to do super long contents and still get the same chance aquiring items. It was once the beautiful of GW2 but it is no longer the case now.

Two hours per day is half of our lives?

1/12 can you even read properly?

Did you play too much already?

Get some rest dude

Uhm, if 2 hours a day is 1/12 of your life… I think a better way of phrasing would have been ’it’s a 1/12 of a day’. Otherwise you’re going to die 24 hours after being born :P

Thing is, as said above, MMOs are time consumers as are RPGs. That’s been known for years. GW1 used to pop up a message to take a break after 2 hours of play. How much time you put into the game is up to you but I don’t think I’ve ever been able to play any RPG game for less than 2 hours at a time simply because I wouldn’t progress very far. I think the only exception to that has been if I’ve popped on to grab a time limited reward, unless you count handheld games á la Tetris or Pokemon. To me it’s like saying ‘I don’t have 2 hours to cook a joint of lamb but I want it to be tender and falling off the bone.’

I have the time but I’m restricted by my disabilities – my concentration is no longer what it was (thanks MDD/bipolar!), I can’t sit for long periods of time (thanks lipodystrophy and hypermobility!). I accept that being differently abled I’m not going to be able to do everything that other people can. The platforming skills I developed as a kid playing Sonic etc on the Mega Drive have evaporated somewhat so actually finishing a JP for me is a massive achievement. Timed JPs? I don’t do well under that kind of pressure – Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2 was always my least favourite. But as I finished the whole of Sonic 2 in 2 hours earlier this year, I know that I can do it with enough practice. In terms of this shoulder skin, I might not ever complete the JP in order to get it. But hey, that’s just how it is. I’m not asking for the time-restriction on certain JPs to be removed just because I can’t do them.

I can see the OP is trying to be supportive of disabled players, but to me it’s a bit patronising. We’re not a homogeneous mass of people, we have many varied limitations and what could be helpful for some disabled people could be a hindrance for others.

Tbh what we need is a confirmation on whether the 10k will be reset at the end of Wintersday or not. That seems to be the main gripe of everyone.

Is this… GW2 teaching kids bad drinking habits? Oh my god…

This is why games come with age ratings. I don’t recall GW2 being a age 3+ rating. If you let your kids play games with ratings above their age, then content suitability is your problem, not ANet’s. Or you know, you could educate your child about what alcohol is like IRL and why binge drinking isn’t good for them (and the fact this is a game, not real life). Touchy subject for me as working as a game retailer, I got sick of blasé attitudes of parents towards buying games like GTA, yet they’d be the first to complain about the game’s content because of their poor widdul kiddies’ eyes seeing prostitutes, drug use and large amounts of violence. Manhunt being pulled from the shelves for a period of time really ticked me off. Nothing personal :P

I’m concerned with how holiday achievements have been resetting lately that I’ll get halfway done this year and have to start from scratch next year.

This is my only concern. I’m going to be saving the drinks I get now I’ve unlocked the achievement and waiting til next year to see what happens. If it resets, then I’ve got 2 years worth of drinks to try it with and only wasted a couple this year. If it doesn’t, I’ve still got the drinks. Either way, I’m not getting the shoulders this year so meh. I don’t much care for the skin anyway. If it resets, 10k is too much for the 2 weeks or so the event’s up. Personally I see it as a long term holiday achievement to be done over a couple of years. Mind you, I used to annually play events on GW1 (never had to buy a consumable title) so I guess I got into the whole festival farm/hoard mindset a few years ago -shrugs-

I do wonder if this is ANet trying to retain players by giving them long-term goals – only the lack of communication doesn’t really help if that is what they’re trying to do. It’d be nice to see a bit of clarification on this from a staff member as people are going to just get more dispirited thinking it’s something they’ll never get rather than something that can be worked on over time. The Lucky title in GW1 for example gave you a boost to your lockpick retention on chests which brought down the cost of the Treasure Hunter title, which in turn could bring down the cost of the Wisdom title. Admittedly the Lucky title could be worked on through breaking picks year round, but the fastest method was a festival mini-game called 9 Rings which was an out and out gold sink. I’d be looking at 600 plat per festival (x3 a year) to camp the rings for the duration. It took people literally years to get that title and boost to their retention rate. Yes, I know this is GW2, but it makes me wonder if they’re trying for a similar concept with this achievement seeing as achievements are now how you get titles. Plus both the GW1 titles/benefits and this shoulder skin are optional. If you want it, you put in the work and time.

It would be pretty boring if everyone had the shoulders though – people already kitten about gem store wings in that regard for example.

Bloodtide Coast was actually where I observed the problem while levelling (first character, been playing a couple of days, doing hearts for karma/exp/getting the measure of the game), hadn’t come across any farmers until then. I just made up my mind there and then never to approach anyone who was farming. A couple of new players who made that mistake were yelled at so I learned from it -shrugs- I can honestly say I don’t care either way about the nerf but remembering people complaining on the forums about being reported as griefing for accidentally tagging/killing a mob when they had no idea what was going on… :/

They could have moved some ambients, sure. Most likely it was a variety of reasons but I honestly don’t think the gem store really figured into it much if it all. But ya know, this is all conjecture without someone from ANet giving their side, at which people will probably still claim there were reasons they won’t disclose to us. Such is life.

I’ve a feeling it wasn’t just the toxic chat but the fact people were reporting each other for griefing (probably a lot of false cases) as well as abuse. Never took part in a maize farm but I stumbled across one while levelling my first character a couple of weeks before the nerf and daaaaamn, there was more salt in chat than in the sea on the map. The nerf came as no surprise to me after that and the threads on the forums complaining about people being kittens. If something’s a major source of conflict in a game that there’s a crapton of reports over (especially false ones which are a waste of staff time), they’re going to fix it with a nerf; as much as the gem store theory is so fantastically constructed

Also:

Anyone deviating from that is obviously doing it wrong and it must be removed, right? That is exactly what is toxic in game. Players telling other players what to do and how to do it. That’s probably what most troll’s in game tell themselves to justify their actions too.

Uh, that’s what maize farmers were doing to new players… So by your own admission it was toxic?

Verbal abuse is mostly subjective but a lot of games have a stricter policy on homophobic slurs. A friend and I were banned for 3 days in GW1 for finally letting rip on someone who was constantly trying to cause drama with our guild. I’m guessing her whole team reported us in PvP. Neither my friend or I said anything remotely bigotted. As for what you’ve had said to you in those screenies, I don’t see how there wouldn’t be a ban for that exchange. Mind you, I don’t have access to the whole log like GMs do (not saying you’re lying/exaggerating, just trying to be objective).

I don’t know the statistics, but there’s a pretty good chance that Reddit has more users than the official forums do.

That’s not the point. If they’re going by number of users then they might as well scrap the official forums for anything other than bug reports and let us go elsewhere to debate things. What makes me laugh is that Guru and QQ were the main forums in absence of official ones in GW1 so I thought that the reason they went for official forums this time was so there was better communication between players and staff. Oh how wrong I seemed to be… It really is concerning that the staff prioritise media other than their official forums to announce things. If they posted here first and then on Reddit (or even copypasting the Reddit response to here immediately after there), then I don’t think anyone would really care. Having to use another website that many people don’t wish to use in order to access important information and news, nah, not cool. And as kind as it is of Flesh to collect what we miss, they shouldn’t have to and that’s kinda the whole point.

This seems odd to me. I have yet to see any bile in DS or WvW. I am on FA and I have never had anything bad directed at me in WvW despite the fact that I am a mediocre player at best. The only negative thing I have ever seen in WvW map chat was several months ago when a player wanted to be validated on TS and was suspected of being a spy for another server. And from what I saw of that convo, those suspicions may well have been correct. -grin- Most of the time map chat seems downright friendly on FA.

I don’t do DS very often, but for any organized map, my experiences have been pretty positive as well. Maybe I have been lucky?

Fellow FAer here and although I’ve not yet ventured into WvW or DS, I have to say that the overall tone in map chat seems fine. I get the whole fact we’re on a megaserver but I believe there’s some map designation based on home server from what I’ve heard from a couple of people. Explains why I rarely see guilds advertise for a server other than FA. But I can honestly say that yes, I’ve seen a couple of flame wars in LA, had a couple of Teq runs (pre-HoT) that were full of abuse towards players who were unfamiliar with the event because people were too busy flaming to explain what to do, had a couple of people in the open world map-chat who’ve made me roll my eyes. That’s par for the course in any game though.

Out of the few names that’ve made it to my blocklist, all but 1 were gold spammers. The one who wasn’t was some dude who decided to whisper stalk me because I had the temerity to disagree with him once in map chat (I’d forgotten the interaction almost immediately, he pursued me a few days later via whisper). He thought that it was bugging me, I just felt like I was enabling him in his obsession by not blocking him :P My usual response to ‘umad?’ is ‘No, just bored.’

A lot of people say stuff just to get a rise. I have mental health issues and yes, sometimes they can worsen my depression. Never to the point of wanting to self-harm again or OD – the only thing that made me feel remotely that strongly was a hate campaign against me personally in another game with a playerbase far more toxic (and younger) than this. Not surprisingly, a lot of them played LoL and figured that as people were complete gits on there, they could talk like that to anyone, anywhere just because they felt like throwing a teenage hormone fuelled tantrum. Personally I think the guy who tried to whisper-stalk me with abuse has more mental issues than I do

So, there needs to be a bit of work on both sides – people remembering it’s just a game full of people you will most likely never meet or speak to outside of these pixels, as well as people remembering there’s people behind those screens who don’t want to listen to your abuse – whether you think it is or not. Being an kitten for no reason might be funny to you, some people don’t want the drama and come on to relax. How many hours you’ve got on your account/character doesn’t mean jackkitten outside of the game and isn’t even a judge of how ‘good’ you are at the game, not that anyone outside of the game even cares. As for people who are ‘too sensitive’, maybe you are, maybe you aren’t. However, reviewing your coping mechanisms isn’t a bad thing. If you find yourself getting too worked up, take a break or do something that’s positive – help out a guildie with something to reverse the negativity.

The current situation is not solely the fault of HoT although I can concur with the point made that increased difficulty is going to make people feel ‘crappy’ until they either adjust (I don’t want to say ‘git gud’ but the more time you spend on a game, the better you will get and no, it doesn’t have to be 10+ hour binges a day) or leave. Or ANet nerfs everything into the floor so the maps are on par with core Tyria.

Truth is, most people are jerks and that’s something universal online and offline. If you want to show that you don’t like the behaviour, simply don’t associate with those people. Tell people they’re a kitten often enough and they will eventually listen. It just depends on how you say it. I personally find out pointing out that their obsession with someone else’s online habits is actually rather worrying and that they should consider speaking to someone professional about it.

Yes. Me.

That stuff is on The Internet and as such needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. That same site was quoted numerous times in the Neverwinter forums as “evidence” of how rubbish the company was, or had become. You didn’t have to be a genius to spot the bogus entries that were made by players rather than (ex-)employees.

Think about what would motivate someone to post a review of their (ex-)employer on a website and about the category of person who would do so.
I’m not saying it is all sweetness and light at ANet. I am saying that there is no way a review site like that is ever going to give a balanced view of a company.

(Hands up anyone who thinks that this GW forum gives a true representation of player sentiment as a whole…)

For the most part, I agree. It’s worth noting that even the positive reviews had some of the same cons as the mostly negative ones though. The only completely positive reviews seemed to be from people who hadn’t worked there very long.

I also filed a report and got immediate response saying they acknowledge the problem. I think they’re purposely not prioritizing the fix to push some LS2 sales. If it’s really true then it’s gross.

That is THE shiny Truth my friend!!. The easiest and fastest way to have those mastery points is to buy LW… so welcome to Anet’s sales strategies.

Joke’s on them because I bought it before HoT and I’m still not happy that I’m being denied points that I’m meant to have earned.

I’ve been trying to earn some more Central Tyria mastery points of late as I used up the ones I had, but yesterday decided to get my Asura through her first personal story chapter. Just had a look at my hero panel and apparently she earned one for Graduation Day but I received no mastery point for doing so.

http://puu.sh/lr75V/4fe8aaac0c.jpg
http://puu.sh/lr751/95183c1895.jpg

Doing a bit of delving into the Hero category, I see that I apparently earned mastery points previously for various personal story steps although as they were completed before HoT’s release I have no way of knowing whether they were applied to my account or not. In fact, most completed story achievements claim you earned a mastery point for them but before you do them, they don’t say that you’ll earn one. For example, I have a completed achievement for becoming a full member of the Order of Whispers which apparently granted me a mastery point, however the uncompleted achievement of becoming a full member of the Priory doesn’t state it gives one.

http://puu.sh/lr76W/6ddfe2bcee.jpg
http://puu.sh/lr78k/214c182aad.jpg

Now I’m confused: are the completed achievements correct and I’ve not had mastery points applied which I’m owed, or are the completed achievements wrong in stating that they give a mastery point? Either way, there’s a problem here.

Apologies if someone’s already reported this, couldn’t find anything using the search function.

No it is not. I mean seriously. You really think I’m going to try to install the 64 bit client on 32 bit windows? :/ Please….

Uhm, I used to crash frequently when I had 32-bit Win7 (this was pre-HoT). As soon as I updated to 64-bit Win7, not a single crash even after HoT. Played as soon as the expansion went live too and the maps were chockablock. Just saying. I’m also not overclocking and run my graphics on autodetect (which puts me somewhere in the middle of the spectrum). I honestly don’t know why so many people are crashing.

GMs are awful in this game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

GMs in City of Heroes had way more power and the game was better off for it.

No, it causes over-dependency. People will expect a GM to hold their hand every step of the way as I’ve seen on many private servers for other games (and some official servers too). GMs are unable to resolve any issues that are a result of coding (lack of knowledge, ability and source access in most cases). Not to mention the larger the playerbase, the less people they are able to baby-step through every single problem they encounter. This then leads to people complaining that a GM wasn’t available to help them. You know what I find better? People being encouraged to use common sense to report bugs and find solutions themselves. If you’re grown up enough to use a computer, then you’re grown up enough to follow simple processes like bug reporting.

Oh and the more power you give GMs, the more room for abuse. Seen that happen far too many times and not just on private servers either.

I’m talking about the masteries though, which… at millions of exp per line… is bordering on Korean grind. And you need to get those out of the way before you can tackle the Hero challenges on the map.

I thought you could get masteries by doing anything that granted exp? If im wrong I apologise and please correct me.

Exp from anything in the expac jungle yes. So basically I’m stuck running around killing random mobs while running from event to event, and watching my exp bar move ever so slooowly.

Uh, there’s Maguuma masteries which require the new maps, yes. Tyrian masteries are trained in the old maps (which includes SW and DT). Just wanted to make that distinction clear so people don’t think you can only train masteries in the new maps which would be a lie.

The common denominator is not “I don’t want to play to unlock this,” its “I don’t want to grind masteries for 20+ hours and burn through new PvE content to enjoy the rest of the game with new elite specs,” such as dungeons, fractals, wvw, etc.

Only because playing the content has somehow become ‘grind’. I’ve spent my time taking part in events, earning rewards and my masteries level as a result. Is that not how it’s meant to work? If I was going to get everything maxed as soon as the game went live, or in the 20+ hours quoted, I’d have seen it as an epic waste of money as imo a game is there to be played over a long period of time. I don’t care that I’ve not maxed my Reaper traits and all masteries in one day, means there’s more stuff for me to do tomorrow. No one’s putting a gun to anyone’s head and saying ‘sit there for however long it takes and don’t move until these things are maxed’. If you’re bored of working on traits, do some Halloween, do some fractals, do some WvW. It’s not like there’s a shortage of stuff to do in game (or out of it and trust me, there is an outside world!).

What you said happened when they announced that they were making gw2. That is, gw1 was at the end of its lifespan and no more xpac would be released. At that time, very few people would plan to play gw1 for many more years, so it wasn’t a big deal when some people were disadvantaged. Are you implying that they are doing this because we are going to see gw3 soon, so that whether our characters make much progression in gw2 now does not matter much? If this were the case, I would feel better, but we are not told any news like this.

No, but I would guess they’re already working on the next expansion or at the very least have a fair number of ideas for it. But my point stands about content being locked behind expansions and changes to the core game happening as a result. I remember even a couple of years ago, people who only had one expansion saying they were bummed they didn’t have access to x skill/area/content. Heroes being introduced affected anyone with only Prophecies as it became a lot harder for them to form groups and the henchie AI was terrible. As I said, games have to evolve or they die on their backsides. It’s kind of a given in my eyes that if an expansion comes out, it’s content that you will need for the rest of the game.

Oh, and we knew very early on that GW1 would be linked to GW2 in some way, hence the Hall of Monuments calculator being around for so long before GW2’s launch and people working on the game for those. Heck, people still go back to work on those so there’s still sales. Bet those people aren’t just buying Prophecies either.

Yeah, that’s the problem. Not the grueling amounts of grind just added to a game that billed itself as a “no-grind” MMO, just impatient people wanting instant gratification. Uh huh. Gotcha.

Gruelling amounts of grind as in playing through the new content in order to unlock it instead of it all being insta-maxed the second the expansion went live? Riiiiiight. I call spending 10+ hours in the same map killing the same mob for one level grind, personally. Guess the meaning’s changed to ‘anything I don’t want to do’ which seems to be most things from a lot of the posts I’ve seen lately.

Uh, the EotN skills were PvE only, as were consumables so actually they gave PvErs a major advantage in elite areas and therefore money making. Not to mention that you needed EotN for dungeons, much like HoT is required for raids. Heroes weren’t available in Prophecies so again, in order to play effectively you needed Nightfall or EotN. Then there was the whole introduction of Zaishen missions/challenges/bounties later on: you needed all parts of the game in order to be able to fully access them.

My point is this is nothing new with ANet in the slightest. As others have said, they have to make their money somehow with a no subscription model and it still works out cheaper than a subscription game. A game that stays static is a dead game.

Don’t buy HoT if you don’t want to, but don’t complain about being left behind.

I feel you on that one, dude. Seems playing a game is ‘grind’ to a lot of people now and they feel that when they pay for a game, they should get everything on a plate with no work required. I don’t get it myself; I buy a game because I want to play the content. I thought that was how games worked… -shrugs-

Are you joking or don’t you remember old Ursan Blessing and the introduction of consumables? It was exactly the same thing. You had to have all 3 campaigns and EotN or you were severely disadvantaged. This is why I don’t get the bellyaching from people who played GW1 and why I pre-purchased HoT when I started GW2 – because the expansions will become core content just as much as the first instalment of the game. If you can’t get it now, get it when you can. I wish people weren’t into instant gratification so much…

8am release here for me, I’ve got to be in my flat all day while my new kitchen’s being finished off and I’d have been getting up HoT or no. I’m expecting not to be able to play until 12pm earliest due to inevitable new builds and slow downloading because of increased server traffic. The timing’s actually great for those in Singapore and the like as they’re +8 GMT. Also, it’s half term where I am in the UK so I imagine there’s going to be a fair number of people trying to get on regardless of work/school commitments of others. Certainly was bloody busy today when I went out to do some shopping.

Can You Fill A Hole?

Bellatrixa.3546

As much as I love my guild, most of the members are in NA timezones so I have little opportunity to really learn group content unless I wait for an insomniac phase or become nocturnal. The reason I joined a NA server (Fort Aspenwood) was because most of my friends playing are across the Atlantic. Bit of a problem for a Brit!

When I heard HoT was going to come with cross-guild chat, I figured I wouldn’t feel so bad about joining another guild to help fill the gap in timezones as I’m mostly on between 10am and 11pm GMT/BST/UTC-1; not constantly I might add.

I’m 30 with a very mature sense of humour and creative swearing skills. I’m relatively new to the game (56 days on /age) but know how to use Wiki and find things out for myself. However, reading page upon page about fractals and dungeons fried my brain and I learn better doing things than simply by reading or watching Youtube. I have 0 problems with getting on TS/Vent in order to be talked through something or for a run. I played GW1 for 5 years and am still having fun adjusting to the sequel, getting the feel of classes. I don’t like/do drama (particularly casual use of prejudicial language), but will happily discuss anything respectfully and like to keep guild chat alive and fun.

I main a Necro (ooh, non-meta!) which I’m trying to ‘master’ before moving onto other classes. I’m not interested in strictly adhering to meta as new meta only evolves from playing outside of the box. I’d like to learn dungeons, fractals and hopefully start with some PvP/WvW (and raids once I feel confident enough). I won’t 100% rep but while I’m playing with you, I’ll be repping you!

So, if you have the patience and craziness to teach an old dog new tricks at a time she’s not meant to be asleep, I’d love to hear from you!

All the limitations you’ve mentioned here would make me more likely to just register for a f2p account if I’m brutally honest.

Also, if I was put on a random EU server, it’d be so nice not to have a bloody clue what everyone was saying considering some of them are language specific. That’d really make me want to stick with the game.

Necromancer for pretty much all the reasons listed above by others. It was my main in GW1 and is my main in GW2. I doubt it would be an issue, OP. I bought GW1 EotN for a Canadian friend of mine as a Brit and there were no problems, just as I could choose an American server to play on in GW2 despite being European and paying with pounds sterling. A sale is a sale in the eyes of ANet and if there’s nothing to say you can’t then you’d have a strong case for a refund if it wasn’t possible.

Everything wrong with HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Bellatrixa.3546

Bellatrixa.3546

i have acknowledged each, i simply don’t share the perception that gw2 or any online game for that matter has a friendly community. this is from 20+ years of gaming online and represents thousands of negative interactions.

“insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”

So if you know that online games are hostile and unfriendly, why do you continue to make your stress problems worse by playing them? If you know something’s bad for you, the logical thing to do is to avoid it and find something to replace it. There are loads of multiplayer games out there that you and your wife could play together. There’s no shame in walking away from something that you once enjoyed but can no longer tolerate for whatever reason. I just can’t get my head around what it is you want to change, other than the entirety of the game and community to suit your personal levels of tolerance. Plenty of people here have said that they have had experiences that aren’t like yours and that it’s not as bad as it all seems to you. That there are decent people out there, decent guilds out there, heck even decent pugs out there.

Reading between the lines, it looks as if you don’t have great coping mechanisms when it comes to dealing with other people, no matter how objective they try to be. People saying your opinions are ‘absurd/ridiculous’ are simply saying what they feel about your opinions, not personally attacking you or saying your opinion is worthless. There is a difference which you seem unable to see and given you mentioned health issues, I’m going to be generous and attribute it to that. I have health issues of my own which mean I don’t deal with people as best as I could at times, a lot of people do. A lot of those people play online games because they struggle to deal with people in RL – went through a phase of that myself a couple of years ago. However, it was through all the ‘drama’ that went with my interactions that I stepped back and reflected on whether I was dealing with things the right way or if I could improve. As much as there’s this attitude of ‘I am who I am so accept me or gtfo’, personal development is a good thing and shows maturity – the ability to admit that you or how you acted was wrong along with the ability to change. Why do you think so many people hate politicians? :P

By identifying what others were having problems with, I realised that there were things I could try myself to get along better with others. This doesn’t mean descending to the level of calling someone a bigoted slur, but simply realising that if some people want to be kittenbags, it doesn’t mean everyone’s like that or that you have to acknowledge their behaviour. As people said from the start, report if it’s serious, block anyway. ANet give us the block function so we can do our own moderation of what we see so they can deal with serious transgressions. Such is the case in any game with a blacklist/block function. What can seem serious to you can seem trivial to others as it’s all about context and how a person reacts as an individual. The interactions you see in LA between people seemingly arguing/harassing each other… you don’t know the context. It could be people who know each other larking about, it could be that you have a higher standard of what’s ‘abusive’ in terms of dialogue. From reading your responses in this thread and seeing you call out people for being rude/harassing in their replies when this is one of the most civil threads despite the massive opportunity for people to seriously lay into you, I think that’s why ANet are doing ‘nothing’ about some of your reports. As much as different people respond to things differently, the ToS/UA/EULA/whatever it’s called now has to be a standard set of rules as otherwise GMing would be a bloody nightmare trying to cater for the multitude of levels of tolerance of thousands and thousands of players. It might mean that some things get said that action won’t be taken over that hurt you. The solution is to block that person so you no longer have to interact with them and moving on. Move on through ranting to your wife, go for a walk, start a personal blog to vent all your frustrations in… but you need to move on.

I don’t think I or anyone else here can really help you unless you’re willing to listen to criticism (as much as you don’t like it), actually reflect on your own actions, work out how you got to this point and how it can change. There’s been plenty of suggestions here (and outright offers of help!) which you don’t seem to be taking on board. Other people are offering their opinions of why they disagree with what you think is ‘wrong’ with HoT and how you could make your own experience more enjoyable. That’s why the thread’s deviating from its intention.

Finally, saying a thread is closed doesn’t close a thread. A moderator closing the thread closes a thread. You are not a moderator therefore you don’t have the power to tell people if they can post or not. If you wish the thread to be closed, I suggest you use the report button and give your reasons for wanting the thread closed. Otherwise, it’s fair game. That’s coming from 15 years of using/modding internet forums and is standard ops everywhere.

Best of luck OP, I really hope you find the peace you’re looking for.

P.S. I for one am greatly looking forward to more group content to do with my guild and I’m happy that HoT will be supplying us with that. I’ve met some truly amazing people in this franchise in the last 5 years and hope to meet many more as well as seeing my guild expand further. As long as I can get raids on a different night to missions seeing as an EU running with a NA guild means I have to stay up until ungodly hours. But I choose to do so because of the people.
