Why the need to make everyone PvP?

Maybe you shouldn’t be playing a game that was designed from the ground up, based on a system of karma and gold. A PvE system that dominates — no, completely encompasses, the vast majority of the game. The PvP that is so important to you is just peripheral content. Perhaps you should be playing something where PvP is the pie filling and not crust.

Nope. I was just using your argument against you. You feel entitled to having legendaries without doing WvW. By that same logic, why shouldn’t I be able to get them without karma, gold or both?

FYI, I have spent almost the entirety of my time in this game in PVE, and haven’t really touched PVP since august (apart from some WvW for the monthlies). But hey, you want legendaries without WvW. I’m cool with that, but I’ll opt out of karma instead. Sounds only fair to me.

The difference here is that PvP is a peripheral activity in a PvE game, while karma and gold are fundamental systems that the whole game rests upon. You’re trying to compare the seat covers in a Ferrari to the fuel it uses in its engine.

the way i see it, there isn’t a problem with the game there is a problem with players wanting exclusive pve in a pvp centric game.

guess you just need to shift your attitudes to suit the game your playing instead of expecting the game to shift to suit you.

It’s a PvE game. Just because the sliver of the game that you resign yourself to, encourages and rewards the art of gank, doesn’t mean this extends to the rest of the game. In fact, GW2 is arguably the most cooperative MMO operating right now. If it were truly PvP-centric, you lot would be ganking each other over copper nodes in Queensdale. But that doesn’t happen. It CAN’T happen because PvP isn’t supported there. Nor is it supported in the vast majority of the game world. It’s only available in a handful of little zones, completely segregated from the rest of of the world. Heh, lore-wise, your PvP isn’t even taking place in Tyria.

So show me how you rationalize calling it a PvP-centric game when there are only two WvW maps plus two copy/pastas, and four sPvP maps, none of which much larger than even a single district of Divinity’s Reach. By the way, Divinity’s Reach, Hoelbrak, The Grove, Rata Sum, The Black Citadel, Lion’s Arch — ALL PvE only locations. Compare that to at least 25 PvE ONLY maps, most of which being FAR larger than any PvP map. As for jumping puzzles, the PvE only puzzles outnumber the PvP puzzles by more than 8 to 1. Personal storyline? All PvE content. Dungeons? There are 8 of them with 4 different paths or approaches to them — ALL PVE CONTENT.

I will give you the activities though. Those are PvP-centric. All ONE of them.

So tell me, how is this a PvP-centric game?

First you censor with the word kitten? Man you guys are so funny Legendary weapons only useable in PVE for the true PVP haters perhaps? Or, peace zones around the PVE objectives. Or, NPC to debuff campers.

But anyway, not the biggest issue imo. The point of a legendary weapons is to slap your ‘enemies’ (human) with it right? And have you seen the other requirements? World completion is the least of your problems. Also, why should a PVPer do all the PVE effort?

Because you bought a PvE game…?

@Curlybaby

Want a quick solve? Make the Badges and Dungeon Tokens an either/or requirement. Boost the token requirement to make the difficulty more in-line with the Badge grind. Then people can farm whatever the kitten they want to farm.

Done.

The map requirement is something that only takes time. If PvEers aren’t interested in chimping it up, we can be patient and wait for the locations we need to open up. Eventually they will. In the meantime, we’d just need get comfortable being a WvW spectator until we get what we came for.

I have no dificulty doing PvP.
Again as mention in my first post. I am rather good at it.
I just no longer wish to do it. It not fun.

Well, I have it on good authority that if you don’t wish to do it you won’t get the legendary. But that’s completely up to you.

I, for example, do not wish to farm karma and gold for my legendary. I “demand” my “right” to get my legendary without those.

Maybe you shouldn’t be playing a game that was designed from the ground up, based on a system of karma and gold. 1. This is a PvE game. There is a kitten-ton more dedicated PvE content in the game than there is PvP. The PvP stuff is on the fringes of the PvE. Deal with it.

2. Throughout the entire game, the two playstyles were kept completely separate — right up until you reach the only long-term goal the game offers. Let me just repeat that last part: legendaries are the only long-term goal the game offers. Then PvP becomes a requirement if you wish to participate in that goal.

3. Prior to release, ArenaNet constantly stressed that they wanted to create a game that offered a cooperative experience, while also including a beefy, but optional, PvP game, to ensure that people didn’t feel forced into playing a game that they didn’t enjoy. Legendary acquisition flies in the face of that philosophy and it only becomes apparent towards the end of the game. There is no indication that there would be an about face prior to that.

4. No one is asking for a free pass or to have anything handed to them NOW. What we are asking is to continue to play the game we purchased, just like we were expecting, and not be forced to switch gears at end game. There’s no raiding because raiding represents a different game from what we would have been playing, prior to end-game. Being coerced into PvP at the end of the game, just so that we can continue to have an ongoing goal is the same as forcing people to go into raid mode. Again, that’s counter to the advertised design philosophy.

And here’s a final bit of truthiness that some of you need to come to grips with. Those who don’t wish to participate in PvP are no less dedicated, hardcore, patient or willing to grind to achieve a legendary item, than any PvPer. We just don’t get our kicks from chimping in the Mists with the rest of you. That’s not the game we signed up for. We might as well fire up CoD at end-game since that’s closer to your game than then one we’ve been playing.

What do you think about Legendary Weapons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blacklight.2871

Blacklight.2871

I personally dislike PvP, so I don’t expect to ever get the 2500 or so WvW kills needed to get the 500 badges.

The look and behaviour of the weapons greatly varies. Of those I have seen in videos or other previews, I like the staff best. I use sceptre/dagger, however, and the sceptre is very much not something I would want to hold.

That’s the only reason I’ve written them off too. I won’t spend the next 1000 hours, kittenderping in PvP, just for that one requirement, then still having to fulfill all the others. I don’t mind the heroic grind necessary to do it, just that I’d be grinding away in a game I never wanted to play in the first place.

They ought to just replace that one requirement with: Either 500 Badges or 1000 Dungeon Tokens. Let the players decide which brick wall they want to bash their heads against.

The dungeon tokens take only a fraction of the time to accumulate compared to badges. I agree with you though that players shouldn’t be forced to do stuff they don’t want to do for something, but then again… it’s the ultimate end-game loot in GW2. With that in mind, I think the only players who should be able to get it are the most dedicated to every aspect of the game.

Sure, that might be a little elitist to say… but they won’t throw the tide of a fight, so in this case I think it may be alright to feel this way.

I’d be amenable to 2000 Tokens or 5000 Tokens — whatever is judged the approximate equivalent in time and effort. Yes, both PvE and PvP are aspects of the game. But it’s been made pretty evident over the last decade or so that these two play styles are incredibly different in MMOs. That separation is respected for the vast majority of the game. It should be extended it to the long game as well, which is really all what legendaries are — GW2’s long game.

I miss the costume makers and I don’t hold any great hope that they will be included with the Halloween update. If they were planning on letting us store the costumes (skins) we purchased, they would have had that going from launch since they were already selling that stuff in the gem shop. Instead, we’re made to rely on constant transmuting of skins for appearance changes and having to store those skins in inventory when not in use, if we want to keep them.

It’s a VASTLY inferior system to what they had running in GW1, but it is more conducive to gem shop transactions. Hence, I don’t see them changing it.

So only Warrior is viable anymore in pvp?

Blacklight.2871

I have eight characters — one of every profession. The very last one I rolled was a Warrior because it was the one that interested me the least. By the time I’d unlocked all my weapons skills, I was asking myself, “Why the kitten did you wait so long?” Compared to all other professions, it’s laughable how easy it is to play. The mechanics aren’t as interesting as some of the other professions, but Warrior more than makes up for it in pure, unadulterated facerollability.

At this point, I’m not bothering to go back to Orr until I’ve got my Warrior there. If I’m going to have to endlessly grind risen and farm for mats, this is the profession to do it with. Everything else is just needlessly stretching the grind and putting up speed bumps.

No comment about PvP though, as I couldn’t care less about it.

Ranged is great up until you reach the level cap. At that point you’ll mostly be fighting risen. Waves and waves and waves of power sprinting risen. That’s when the benefits of a range character really diminish and the strengths of melee specialists shine. When most of your fights come down to having an enemy right in your face, having a strong melee character is something to appreciate.

And yeah, Warriors excel at everything. Only play something else if you actually want to make the game a little more difficult.

I’m not confident that changes will be made that will entice me into a long-term commitment. There’s really only one long-term goal that this game offers and I don’t see it ever being accessible to someone who bought the game only for it’s PvE strengths. As good as those are, they offer only short term goals, and my interest goes no further than those goals can take me. Less so, since my disappointment is coloring even those aspects negatively.

I’d have no problem with more skimpy male armor. I’d never use it myself since I usually only run female toons, but I think that everyone should be able to put together the look that most pleases them, even the prudes. I’m just sad that so far, when it comes to medium armor, the prudes are the ones most being catered to. I’m sick to death of long coats.

A better system for counting participation would be nice, but that still doesn’t address the fact that if you do a lot of support activity, you aren’t tagging mobs. That means no loot, and loot is where the money is to be made. One good drop can easily surpass a week’s worth of event farming, in terms of gold.

Even if you were getting the credit that you’re due for helping in the fight, you’re still getting the short end of the stick from the lack of drops. Not sure how to get around that.

Persistent Ranger Pet Naming

in Suggestions

Posted by: Blacklight.2871

Blacklight.2871

What they really need to do is let you choose a discrete name for every pet type, that is persistent, regardless of swapping. That means you can tame a jaguar at level 10, name it, go on to tame and use a dozen different pets afterwards, then come back to your jaguar and still have it retain the name you first gave it. The jaguar will always have that name, until you specifically rename it. That way, you can call it something like Inky, then swap to a Snow Owl and not also have it called Inky.

Basically, names shouldn’t be linked to your two active pet slots, but to the storage slots for all the animals. Then when you pull one out to replace an active one, the name comes with it.

How does one do player-to-player item transfer?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Blacklight.2871

Blacklight.2871

Keep in mind though that there are no safeguards in trading by email. If you are expecting something in return for what you send, there’s nothing to guarantee that you will receive it. You are basically trusting in the honesty of the person you’re trading with. That works fine with friends, but can be a real inhibitor for dealing with anyone else — and with good reason.

The only way to ensure that you receive payment for goods you’re selling, is by using the Trading Post. The drawback there is that it is anonymous and the person you are wanting to trade with, may not actually be able to grab the item once it’s been posted, since anyone who sees it can buy it.

It’s a really bizarre and restrictive trade system. It’s basically pushing you towards the Trading Post, which itself is a really stellar trade system, but it all but prevents individuals from dealing with each other personally, unless you’ve already established trust between you. Not exactly a great community building mechanism.

I have a BM specced Ranger at 80 as well, and I’m pretty sure this is “working as intended”. This kind of behaviour is present all through the world, where some mobs will preferentially attack ranged characters over melee, if they can. The problem with Orr is that there, it’s the rule, not the exception.

Also, when they decide to close on you, they move like they’re world class sprinters, so you can kiss goodbye to the range strengths that define your profession. Once you hit Orr, the majority of combat tends to be right in your face. Sadly, that’s pretty much all you’ll have to look forward to for the rest of the game.

The best solution for this is to roll a Warrior. I’m learning that playing a Warrior “fixes” pretty much every problem I had with my Ranger. Kind of sad, but mostly true.

Home cities will never be as popular as Lions Arch. It is clearly designed to replace your “home city” when you hit 30+ and go beyond your home storyline and onto LA stuff like Defense of Lions arch. Even is people started to use a main city they would only use 1/5 of the main cities.

But a cross chat channel between all cities would be nice.

That’s true about the popularity of the home cities.

How about instituting a racial benefit in each home city, that equates to 10% off every transaction that takes place there, that involves an NPC. Crafting mats, weapons, armor, salvage kits, various other supplies, are all cheaper in your home city. Likewise, vendors pay you an extra 10% for anything you dump off on them, so long as you’re in your home city. That might tend to get people to spend time in their cities because of the tangible benefit, while also populating them with the races who should reasonably be expected to congregate there.

However, given how the changes to the game mostly seem to be taking things away or making things harder on players, I doubt this would fly.

Forced PvP

Map completion should still be split into a PvE form and PvP form. PvE one gets you the PvE oriented part of a legendary. The PvP form should get you the PvP part of a legendary (or for WvW only players who don’t care about dungeons, crafting, or PvE, something that helps them in WvW).

No it should not. Sorry, hate to tell you this as it has already been mentioned so many times. This is a pvp game with pve content. The first I know, shocking really.

That statement is completely full of fail.

At least 80% of the game has absolutely NO PVP COMPONENT whatsoever. If this was a PvP game, the chimps would be chasing one another around Queensdale and the Diessa Plateau, and not be restricted to four small maps, totally segregated from the vast majority of the game. Only the self-serving myopia of a PvP enthusiast could possibly claim that this game is a PvP game with PvE components tacked on to it.

And by the way, get back into the Mists and start clearing some POIs for me. Disagree with most of these points. Even access to the skills is unlike hack/slashers since you can have all of your weapon skill in a couple of levels and everything else, including your elite, at 30. That’s a lot faster than any action game I’ve played.

The only place you hit close to the mark is the end-game. But to me there’s an end-game. Others don’t see it that way. Subjective opinion is subjective.

Does no one else really miss the deck building aspect of GW1?

Sure I miss GW1. It’s still tops on my list of all time favorite MMOs and the deck building was great fun. But this game is not that one. I’d find it just as valid comparing The Secret World or SWTOR to GW1, as I do comparing it to GW2. Different games, different mechanics, different intended experience.

However, I still mourn the loss of true Mesmers. No other class, not even the new and improved GW2 version, can ever compare. All rational arguments aside, I wish we still had Mesmers.

Just an FYI of the polls I did on MMORPG.com

A note about haters: they will leave a game quick if they dislike it, but they tend to linger in forums to share their unhappiness. They don’t leave a game forum for a game they hate. They stay and they spread the word.

As for the poll, I don’t give it too much weight. It’s MMORPG.com, which is all about scoring points off the other guy and little to do with rational discourse. And I don’t trust the opinions of anyone who’s too heavily invested in the subject, positively or negatively. One thing I learned about GW2, despite its “let’s all get along” philosophy, it tends to evoke the most divisive reactions amongst gamers.
