I figured the voice was different because this is 20+ years ago prior to her going completely insane, before there was a Nightmare Court.

I didn’t mind it.

This is what we were going for. We used the same actress, Julianne Buescher, who also voiced Faolain in the core game Personal Story.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003925/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1

That makes a lot of sense to me. However, my question is: Why does she seem to lack the accent that all the other Sylvari have?

Most, but not all, sylvari have the same accent. This was intentional and can be heard throughout the game. Occasionally, an actor’s performance may deviate and that might explain any inconsistencies in certain lines during a VO session.

That stated, I never perceived Faolain as having a British accent but more of a refined manner of speaking. Courtly, formal.

I’d like to address the continuity issue in the Newly Awakened story instance of episode 7. In it, players have a conversation with Malomedies where he says, “We went so long without losing one of our own, but three of our newly awakened have been killed already. This is unacceptable.” He then goes on to say about Riannoc, “I worry about Riannoc. He’s going so far from home. What if he never returns?”

As some have helpfully pointed out, this is at odds with Caithe’s dialog in the Personal Story, where she mentions, “Riannoc was the first sylvari to meet death. We never knew what happened…” This is an error (a.k.a. text bug) that was introduced during the development of episode 7 and was not caught by anyone on the team or in our playtest groups. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. We’re going to fix the conversation text in episode 7 in an upcoming patch so that it is in line with the Personal Story.

On a related note, I should clarify this bit of dialog from the Personal Story, where Caithe says, “…We all felt it when he [Riannoc] died. It was like a part of the Dream was torn away—but we never knew why. Or how.” The sylvari did not feel Riannoc’s death as it happened, but reacted emotionally once they found out about it (such as when a loved one is lost). Caithe is speaking figuratively, not literally, here.

As always, thanks for playing and for sharing your feedback.

@Bobby: Thanks for popping in.

You’re welcome. I try to stop by when I can. As you can imagine, our schedules are very packed these days, so I’m not able to interact with the community as much as I’d like. But I appreciate the sentiment.

I got a question though. Would it be possible in the future to appeal to some of the bigger critism, if it is reasonable?

There are hundreds of opinions being posted on our forums alone, with thousands of others on different message boards (reddit, gaming sites, etc.). Which ones do you mean?

I feel like we are only able to bash you with not much defense from your side(though we can argue that every critism is usefull).

I made a deal with myself long ago not to get mired in forum debates. If I see something I can comment on, I usually do. Otherwise I merely observe. I’d rather let the release speak for itself, since that’s what we’re ultimately judged on. As long as the criticism is constructive and respectful (and doesn’t attack the people who worked tirelessly on the release) we can always learn from it.

It sometimes feels like we just have to wait and see if there will be change. Not that you have to be overly defensive, since I bet that you have your reasons most of the time (the whole team of course), but simple explanation like time constrains for example would be helpfull to keep us from being sour and would actually allow some insight into the developing process which is always nice.

This is a potentially huge topic, and not one that is suited for the forums. About all I can say about game development is that there are always reasons why things are done a certain way. Time constraints play a role in that, as do available resources, quality control, and scope.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_management_triangle

Back on topic. It seems that people liked the lore books. How would you like to see them improve or evolve? Examples help.

Thanks.

I’d rather not see that, to be honest.

These tour guides give humans part of that sense of knowing their history and heritage that the other races don’t show. The other major cities do have a number of NPCs that give a history of the place or the race, but they’re not nearly as showing off the good work. The only way to improve the tours was to make them occur constantly – without player triggering – so that they become more obvious.

This is why in my post above, I only listed the bigger human settlements, because it feels like a good way to give something that humans have going for them, that the other races cannot do the same or better at.

If tour guides were added to other races’ capitals, the only thing I ask is that they’re human historians and scholars so as to show that humanity even has the history of the lands of other races – and even the history of those races, whether or not the other races have them too. There is a need to cease the dropping of human standing in GW2, as we’ve seen them with very little going for them.

If they weren’t presented as tours for other racial cities but instead shown with characters walking and talking about their surroundings (perhaps independent of player participation) it could get the information across while also differentiating the feel of the different races. Thoughts?

  • Felicia Day is still a cast member of Guild Wars 2. We have no plans to recast Zojja with another actor.
  • It’s entirely possible that Zojja could show up in a future release. It all depends on what story we’re currently telling and which characters have an active role in it.

Thanks much.

Wasn’t it stated by some devs in the forums that she did indeed have 2 diff voices and it was important to the story that she had 2 diff voices? I believe it was a comment regarding someone that found some voice dialogue that was leaked online for Scarlet and commented on how the voice was different.

Not exactly. Scarlet has always been voiced by Tara Strong. We did coach her to change her tone to reflect her descent. There should be a noticeable progression over time.

Sorry for my wording, I didn’t mean that she was voiced by 2 diff people but I meant that her voice was supposed to change over time (presumably after getting out of the machine) to indicate that there was some a change in her character. The response I was referring to was stating that there indeed would be a difference in Scarlet’s voice’s tone and it was somewhat important (I guess once again to reflect the change between Ceara and Scarlet)

Got it. Then you are correct!

I want to address the comments about the player character’s knowledge of Mordremoth and how that fits into the story. For some players, this may have felt like it came out of nowhere. Up to this point, the only explicit mention of Mordremoth in the core campaign was on the Teeth of Mordremoth skill in Crucible of Eternity.

Season 2 of the Living World assumes that the player character has completed the Personal Story, killed Zhaitan, and has attained the rank of Pact Commander. It also assumes completion of season 1, that the player character killed Scarlet, and has a friendship with Rox, Braham, and the rest of the crew. Because of the PC’s assumed rank in an organization that deals in fighting dragons, and that such knowledge isn’t really a secret (but isn’t widely known as characters in the world have no reason to openly discuss it until now) we wanted the player to make the call by identifying the dragon in a conversation among friends. In hindsight, there should have been more build up or discovery before reaching that point. Lesson learned.

We want to seed Tyria with lore bits and other items that can better educate adventurous players seeking more knowledge on the subject. Keep your eyes open in future releases. Thanks so much for taking the time to post your feedback regarding episode 2.

I also appreciated the new way conversations integrate into the story. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m appreciating it more, but I’m noticing voice acting in places I never had before. (I created a new character and the first mail to me from my buddy Quinn was voiced! Was this always there, or had I just noticed it?)

So that’s a bug! We originally planned to voice all mails in the Personal Story, but we decided to cut scope due to time constraints, redesigns, rewrites, etc. We should have removed all the associated sound files but I think one or two are still hanging around.

One problem I had, though… did Jory’s voice actor change for parts of this episode? She sounded… different… to me in parts. That could just be because of the situation: she sounded different due to emotional distress. But it just didn’t sound like Jory to me.

Jory has had the same voice actor from the beginning, so if you’re noticing a change it’s likely due to the direction we gave her during the recording session. Episode 2 had some emotional moments and we were trying to reinforce that in the actor delivery. So as long as you didn’t hear voice processing on her lines we’re in good shape.

Anyway, keep up the great work!

Thanks!

Oh, one more thing! The ambient audio in Dry Top is amazing. The wind sounds, specifically. I know that’s a weird thing to comment on, but I love the wind sounds. I’ve got a decent pair of headphones (Sennheiser 558s) and catch myself just stopping and listening sometimes.

Glad you like it! I’ll relay your kind words to the team. I’m sure they’ll appreciate that you noticed their hard work.

Are these the same writers from season 1? GW2 story has been pretty bland so far in the past IMO. This update actually had me drawn in till i finished it. Well made multi layered map, NPC characters that actually feel like players that cast time warp on me, portal the party and do more than the standard 1 point damage.

I think they nailed it, this is what I’ve been wanting. I want to brag about the story but don’t want to ruin anything for anyone on this one. I love the more darker tone to it.

Thanks for the kind words. It’s the same group of writers (Angel, Peter, Elan, and myself, with help from the designers on the team who also contribute a large amount of text for us to work with). The Living World would not be what it is without proper planning and collaboration across all disciplines on the team (writing, design, art, audio, QA, and programming), so I definitely want to say that it’s been a group effort in improving story presentation overall.

We’ve learned a lot from season 1 and I’m thrilled that people are enjoying season 2 so far. Keep the constructive comments coming. We are always looking for ways to make our future releases even stronger.

is there a technical reason behind why all dialogue (that i recall) has to be played while the characters are standing still (i.e. halting progress)? one of episode 1’s missions got a lot of flack because players had to stop progressing it every now and then to listen to marjory and kasmeer talk, when it seems to me that a conversation like that could be had while moving. there are other examples like that, but the point is, i feel a good part of the community would like it if the conversations during missions didn’t interrupt gameplay unless it made sense to have us stop to listen (like on concordia, when you’re listening to the guy describing the attack).

It’s something we’re investigating along with other potential VO implementation improvements. At this point, though, we can’t promise any features.

and, if i may, another thing: what about adding more animations to those conversations?

We do this on occasion, actually.

those are my two main questions about the narrative aspect of the game, which rightfully deserves the praise it’s getting (but doesn’t mean you can get comfortable just yet ;P).

We’re always trying to push ourselves to do better. We appreciate the feedback.

And now we have season two, and whoa, color me impressed. The flow of conversation between characters (whether in the world or in missions) seems natural – though NPCs in the world really do repeat themselves quite often, particularly in Dry Top – and I’m in love with the fact that the two character cut aways are gone and we’re really starting to see some proper cutscenes (the end of episode two was glorious!)

Thanks for the kind words. We’ve been working hard to improve our story presentation.

If I have one complaint it’s that the PC doesn’t really seem to be involved with the narrative anymore outside of text bubbles, but the game has seen leaps and bounds since launch, and I’m willing to bet the lack of PC acting it due to time constraints (since the PC is technically ten separate characters).

We’re currently exploring ways to make the PC speak again. It’s more of a technical consideration and not really about actor availability or voice budget. We’ll share more on this when we’re ready.

Bobby, if I ever meet you in public I’m going to give you a right-proper man hug. Because you – and your team – have restored my faith in this game and for this first time in many months I am actually excited to see what the future of GW2 has in store.

Glad you’re excited. We are, too!

Bobby could have simply said “we felt it was necessary to change this because it makes more sense in the long scale of things.” Or given your latter comment about it not being in the internal wiki, say something akin to what you said there: “the external wiki wasn’t referenced and that line wasn’t in our internal wiki, so we presumed that GW2W was incorrect and made a new date that made sense given our current view of the story.”

Well, I suppose there is a reason Bobby isn’t PR. I know I wouldn’t make a good PR.

I haven’t been back to this thread in a couple of days since we’ve been extremely busy finishing up episode 2 (and other stuff), otherwise I would have commented. A big thanks to Angel for stopping by and further explaining my brief post from the other day. Even though I am essentially embedded on Living World I have other responsibilities that take me away from an episode, so if I’m unable to clarify a point or answer a forum query, it’s not because I’m actively ignoring it. Stuff just gets in the way. I wouldn’t expect anyone outside the studio to know that, so I can understand some of the frustration.

And yeah, PR isn’t my job. We’ve got some fine folks who handle that.

Well they did move away from most of the things they said during development (see the manifesto), it only figures that interview-lore isnt sacred either.

Unless we’ve built content around something, it’s usually considered malleable from a design and lore standpoint. Occasionally we decide to go in a different direction months or years after the first ideas are documented or even talked about externally. In some cases that means what one member of staff says in an interview can change when it comes time to building a release. It’s part of our iterative process.

In short, go by what’s in the game.

I wouldnt even mind to rely only on lore that is presented in the game if there would be enough lore in the game. Im still hoping for some kind of codex in the hero panel.

My advice for you and others who care about the lore is to let us know what you think of the implementation in season 2. We’ve put a lot more resources into seeding each episode with loreful bits.

in the room until after I had finished the story and actually viewed Points of Interest Episode 2. Interestingly enough, even Kate herself also mentioned she missed it.
Was it too well hidden? Would be better if it was at least mentioned in the dialogue.

Hmm. We added a story step that made interacting with the Ceara/Scarlet hologram required so that people wouldn’t miss it. I’ve seen at least one fan video where that was the case. I’ve also heard of some instances where players weren’t prompted to interact. I’ll follow up on this. It may be a bug.

Why does the game have to be open world at the expense of the PC? That’s a complete cop-out.

Actually, it’s the reality of game development. You have limited budget and time to work with, so scope must be adjusted to fit. Features must be prioritized, and sometimes that means cutting content or systems.

The character is indeed voiced. Did you ever played your personal story ?

Warning: nerdy devspeak ahead!

The player character (PC) hasn’t had new voice recorded since the game launched, so you’ll only hear your character speak in the following circumstances: conditional chatter, in cinematic conversations in the Personal Story, and in painterly “full” cinematics. We retired cinematic conversations with the Living World, so right now the PC can only “talk” through unvoiced dialog trees.

We’re exploring some technical improvements that may allow the PC to speak under new circumstances, but it’s actually a bigger undertaking than one would imagine due to the complexity of player voice implementation (10 possible voices, currently shared lines of dialog that we want to split out, scene timing per language, etc.). That’s about all I can say at the moment.

In short, we’re looking to make the PC speak again, but it’s going to take a bit of time to redo the code and content pipelines to make it work, not to mention updating our tools to allow us to generate PC lines that deviate based on race & gender, prior accomplishments, etc. We’re not ready to announce what those changes will actually be or when they might be deployed, but we’re seriously looking into it.

As always, thanks for playing.

Fun fact: SW:ToR had 8 classes with entirely diverging storylines and was and is still fully voiced. With the two genders that means 16 possible voices, with split lines of dialogue (usually 3 choices).

Actually, I’m not saying that you could’ve pulled off something similar as you didn’t have EA’s financial backing (although by not ditching quests for events and cutting down the ridiculous amount of ambivalent dialogue that in 90% of the cases is all about the everyday, boring lives of a zone’s denizens you would’ve had way more resources to concentrate on giving voice to the person who matters the most in an RPG: the PC… my 2 cents). However, I’m still waiting on a branching storyline where my choices matter, I have more than one line of dialogue, and which incidentally also takes my character’s personality, origin, species, and gender into consideration.

For you, the game should be about the PC at the expense of the open world content and ambience. For me, and for Guild Wars 2, it’s about the world as a whole since it’s a cooperative, shared environment. Neither approach is wrong, but we decided to put more of our resources into bringing the world to life. I don’t regret that at all.

So is Rox, Braham, Marjory, Kasmeer and Taimi

I know how she got her name, but did you happen to have any alternative names for Taimi (or Rox, Marjory, etc.) that you, personally, were fond of, but they ended up not being chosen for various reasons?

Braham’s original name was Dyre, but some felt that the pronunciation sounded too much like “Die, Eir” so it was changed. Considering their strained relationship, this was for the best.

One of the strengths of ArenaNet has been they’re ability to recognize holes or failings and take steps to fill them. People have been complaining about missing the past story lore and it’s cool to see them implementing a system to address that.

Heck, I might even try to finish those post-Claw Island missions on my PS now.

We’re also trying to put a little more info in the Story Journal once you’ve completed a Living World story instance, like a slightly more detailed recap that not only includes the plot and action details, but also touches upon the character moments.

(also, new cast member = new character)

Not necessarily. You’ll have to wait and see (and hear).

James Ackley, our Audio Director, sat in on our latest VO session. After a few minutes of a particularly awesome (and hilarious) performance from a new cast member he turned to me and said, “See if we can get some of these outtakes.”

Paying for past content?

Looking over the LS season 2 blurb I spotted this “Past episodes will be available for purchase for 200 gems”

Does this mean if we want to reply any LS content we need to pay for it in gems? Is it an unlock a chapter forever fee for every account or is it character bound? If we pay for a chapter can we team with people who haven’t?

Personally, not sure how I feel about this move. To me it seems to step over the ‘morality line’ and move GW2 to a payment model I don’t really like..

Hmm

If you log in during the release window of an episode (e.g. two weeks) you unlock the episode for your account. You can replay it as many times as you want for free. If you miss the release window and you want to play an episode that you didn’t unlock, you can purchase it.

It’s a lot like watching television in that you can watch (and record) an episode for free when it airs. If you miss it, you can buy the episode off iTunes later. Does that make sense?

Hmm, so if LS is going to be using the green star like the PS, what happens to those of us who haven’t completed the PS? Do we just select that in the story panel and it basically hides the PS one/step?

Going from what Colin described, that seems to be the case.

Colin Johanson

To go along with this change, we’re modifying the story Journal in your character’s Hero Panel so it will track all of your character’s story steps. From that panel, characters who are level 80 will be able to select between playing their personal story and the Living World story. For the Living World story, you’ll be able to select which unlocked episode you’d like to play. Characters under level 80 will be able to see the available episodes, but will not be able to play them until they reach level 80. Think of the Living World story as the constantly expanding continuation of your character’s storyline once they reach level 80.

Once you hit level 80 you can switch between your Personal Story and your unlocked episodes of Season 2.

It seems like devs respond only to useless topics like this and doesn’t care about giving response to anything important. Never before I’ve seen such aproach to customers. Sad.

I reply to writing and VO threads when I can, including critical feedback posts, since that’s my area. Is there something story related that you’re concerned about, or is this comment more about other feedback (balance, gameplay, etc.) that isn’t being addressed? Remember that we read the forums often and reply when we’re able. A respectfully worded post gets a lot more attention than vague complaints.

Not sure if this is in your realm, but since it has to do with the voice overs, I’ll ask.
Any chance we’ll ever see compilation audio files on the ANet Soundcloud . Kind of like the one of rejected/not used ones (like the Logan one demanding the kids candy). I’d really love seeing one of those for each biconic (scruffy included. can’t remember if he’s ever said anything), with all their open world dialogues (not necessarily the cutscene VOs). Thanks.

You should post this request in the Audio channel, but the short answer is “maybe.”

I know that it is not in your authority to tell something about the development of the game. I can say that I don’t like the company’s aproach to responding on the forums, not the actual developers who can write only what they are told.

It is true that I don’t want to ask anything connected to the story. So far I love it, and I know you will give us a great Season 2 with Mordremoth and Maguuma maps and so on.

However, there are same basic things, which I expected to be in game a long time ago.
Just a few here: (snip)

Thanks for the kind words about the story. I hope you enjoy what’s to come.

In regards to the forums, we’re empowered to discuss a variety of things with the fans. Just understand that some topics are off limits for obvious reasons.

Thank you for taking the time to put together your general game feedback. You won’t get any traction posting it in here, though. It’s considered off-topic from the original post. My advice is to put those ideas into an existing (or new thread) such that they can be digested in context. Devs are more likely to read and respond to feedback that’s clearly identified in the right channel or thread. It keeps things more organized.

(sorry for any grammar errors, I’m not a native speaker)

No worries. You’re doing fine!

I kind of feel like a dev word about the incredibly scarce chaos of lyssa recipe is extremely desired, with numerous threads being created about it. I know it was mentioned on stream that it’s droprate is fine, but seeing as it sold for 1k and 2.5k, that isn’t precedented and is disheartening.

This is the wrong thread to discuss that. My advice would be either to post in an existing thread on that topic, or if one doesn’t exist you can create a new one.

Exactly, but that’s another thing, there are at least 7 threads about it, some older than this one. but I appreciate your time, thank you

You’re welcome. Thanks for playing our game and caring enough to post your feedback on our forums.
