Has Trahearne's dialogue been re-recorded?

This was one of my favorite decisions made by the actors and ANet. There was a lot of criticism of Trahearne (some well deserved, some not so much). I attributed much of it to Trahearne being such a Debbie Downer (rather than a Debi Derryberry): things never end well with him, which is exactly the opposite of what you want from a Pact Marshall (even if the dude is conflicted about his own role, he should be confident-ish in front of the troops).

Matthew Brenher agreed to re-record a lot of his bits, as well as do the voices for some of the color dialogue in Silverwastes and the Rebuilt LA. He went from being one of the most disappointing actors in the game (for me) to one of the best. (Example: hang out by LA’s mystic forge and listen for an Asura remarking on the amount of weapons that Zommy is collecting.)

Big thanks to ANet and Brenher for making this happen.

In my opinion, our biggest failings with Trahearne at launch were that his dialog was inconsistent and that we gave him bad direction in the VO booth (my fault, not the VO director’s). Matthew Brenher is a fine actor who has range. His initial deliveries, coupled with some lackluster “first draft” lines, came off as flat. I’m glad we were able to go back and fix some of those things. I’m also happy that we wrote better dialog for him in Season 2 that made him more relatable, friendly.

Thanks for the kind words. Means a lot.

Yes, they redid it. For the most part, its better, he especially gives alot more credit to the player during the personal story than he did before.

However, i don’t like they added his monologue over the Claw Island cutscene. That was originally a very emotional cutscene with just the sombre background music and now it plays trumpets while Trehearne talks about victory. :/

That monologue was actually written and recorded for the game’s launch in 2012. However, a bug with the cinematic playback system was preventing the audio from being heard—for years! Our audio programmer back in 2015 fixed the bug, which finally allowed the cinematic to be played as originally intended. By then, a lot of people were used to it being silent.

I am just playing “A Light in the Darkness”, and Trahearne’s motivational speech to the troops (during the glimpse into the future) all of a sudden sounds, well, motivational, convincing and strong!

The last time I heard it, it sounded like he had taken some sleeping pills.

Have parts of his dialogue across the game been re-recorded? If so, finally and kudos!

Konig is correct. We re-recorded and, in some cases, rewrote Trahearne’s dialog in the Personal Story. We also added some updated art assets, sound effects, and fixed some bugs. What you’re hearing was released back in mid-2015 as part of the Personal Story Restoration project.

I had the same problem but it was related to the Game DVR function of Windows 10. I tried killing off a bunch of different programs (antivirus, various other things) to no avail. Finally, I did the following which seemed to work:

  • Start Menu > Settings > Gaming
  • Game Bar: Turned off Record Game Clips, unchecked Show Game Bar when I play full screen games Microsoft has verified
  • Game DVR: Turned off Background Recording
  • Game Mode: Turned off Game Mode

BTW, this isn’t an “official” support response. This is just what worked for me once I got the Windows 10 Creator’s Update and GW2 kept failing to launch.

so now the devs literally say the non raiders only deserve scraps and they made the new raid focused in that way

No, I merely pointed out what is currently available for non-raiders to catch up on the raid story while inside the game. More than happy to answer your questions, but in the future I’d appreciate it if you didn’t paraphrase my intentions that way. Because that’s not what I said, nor what I meant.

Your statement above is in direct contradiction to your comments in the recent MMORPG interview you and Crystal Reid did -

http://www.mmorpg.com/guild-wars-2/interviews/the-demons-of-bastion-of-the-penitent-1000011552

You cant claim that a cleared instance provides the same experience and then make statements about how you integrated story into every element – how it doesn’t matter if players play for the challenge or the thrill of discovery, they will still find something fun.

It comes across as disingenuous and, frankly, as marketing doublespeak (intentional or not) – simply telling people what they want to hear to placate them.

I replied to this over on Reddit but I’ll paste it here, too, since I think people should understand the context of my statements.

“I think you’re reading into my quotes a little too much. By ‘integrating story into every element’ I mean that the environment is a reflection of the story, the audio is an expression of the story. By the team collaborating across the board, we made the experience feel cohesive. The story bits are mostly told outside the encounters, save for the dialog during the Deimos fight (which is similar to how we handled Spirit Vale). The bulk of the story dialog is told between encounters, and all of the discoverables are available in a cleared instance.

Not trying to convince people either way, or belittle anyone’s feelings about the raids. I just wanted to clarify that part because it seems like the intention of my comment was unclear to you."

Hold on people … don’t get too excited over what Bobby said there. It was a little vague but you can see a big diversion from anything raid-like in that statement.

They are investigating DIFFERENT METHODS to make the story more ACCESSIBLE. That tells me it’s not raid, as we know it in GW2.

Yeah, people should hold their panic and speculation. I haven’t said anything other than we’re looking at ways to make the story accessible. That could take any number of forms.

Effectively you want a story mode for Raids, which is soloable. If they made it a no-reward purely story instance (or some minor one-time only reward), then I wouldn’t have an issue with that.

Issue with that is, and I expect this is a frustration Bobby experiences, is that doing that requires resources that he’s probably not in control of, i.e. people to implement it, people to adjust the boss encounters so they can be soloable, adjust the enemy encounters, etc. etc. etc.

And frankly, I’d rather he focus on creating good stories for raids and having someone else worrying about the implementation or the resources to do a story mode rather than have a basic raid with a lack of story or one so disconnected from the world it’s irrelevant and not worth caring about.

I think the raid storytelling is some of the best group storytelling in the game. It beats the storytelling in dungeons by a mile, so I want all of the community to be able to experience it as well (as I’m sure Bobby does!). I hope that a story mode IS implemented at some point but if they don’t have the resources available to do that, I’d rather he still sticks to making raids have a compelling and interesting story that is relevant to the world of Tyria.

I get the frustration, I do. I had to wrangle together 3- 4 other people just to get the full story experience of dungeons since most groups want to rush through, skip cutscenes and not absorb the story (a balance they’ve actually quite brilliantly achieved in raids) and I would have killed for a solo story mode for them back then.

Well said.

As someone who has taken more than my share of swings with the axe, I do applaud Bobby for putting his neck out to talk and interact with the community on this.

I agree that the issue is not with the story – and that the raid story is extremely well done.

It is solely an issue of accessibility – which goes back to the mechanical implementation of raiding.

There definitely needs to be a better way for players to experience this story – whether it is through tiered difficulties in raiding (my vote) or some other interactive playable content. The important part is that the player gets to feel like the hero of the story. Relying on access to cleared instances really feels like the opposite of that – nothing more than a guided tour from the “real heroes.”

But again, I don’t see this as something Bobby can fix – and his work on the story has been amazing.

But, as he is the only raid developer to really engage with the community on this topic, he is the one that gets to dodge our swinging axes .

I think you both have summed it up quite nicely: certain player frustrations aren’t with the fact that there’s a story in raids (or that the story is “bad” or “poorly told” in their opinion) it’s just that the content is out of reach for them and they want to experience playing it somehow.

Since that’s not something I can personally change, I’m hesitant to engage in discussions surrounding that because I have nothing to add. I can’t/won’t/don’t want to convince anyone that their opinion is bad or invalid, but since many of these suggestions fall outside the scope of what I do (or what the vision for raids as a whole is) I can only listen.

I haven’t played the raids yet, I don’t know if I ever will but, I do know that they are also about the white mantle. So, is the raid story important for the living world story? does the raid happen bevor or after the LW?

muchas gracias

If you go into the third raid wing and talk to Glenna and her journal, and talk to Bennet in Bloodstone Fen, and read the three journals whos pages are scattered across Bloodstone Fen, you will get about 95% of the raid story.

The only things you’ll really miss is the visual and dialogue of the bosses themselves.

If you can join a player who has completed the raid for the week, you can explore the cleared raid instance and talk to the characters that are there, find the collectables, inspect the clues, etc. There are a few achievements you can get this way. Sometimes folks will post on Reddit or Twitter that they will let people in.

My advice: go to the raid lobby in Lion’s Arch or use LFG to find a cleared instance if you’re not seeing a lot of people hanging outside the Forsaken Thicket portal in Verdant Brink. But if you can’t readily find a person who can open it for you, Konig’s suggestion is a good one. Enter each raid, talk to the characters, and read what you can in the first area. It’ll provide a bit of context. Then when you play Episode 1 you’ll have a little extra reference when you read the notes and hear the dialog.

And if you catch me in the game (I usually play on NA but sometimes switch to EU) give me a shout.

Bobby Stein:

If you rescued Bennett in the raid and you have the corresponding achievement, he’ll say that you saved him. If you don’t have that achievement, he should simply say that he was rescued. It’s a simple acknowledgment in a couple of spots. Here’s what I mean.

Didn’t Rescue Bennett in Raid: “After I was rescued, I notified the queen about Salvation Pass. Then I regrouped with my squad and chased some White Mantle here.”

Rescued Bennett in Raid: “After you rescued me, I notified the queen about Salvation Pass. Then I regrouped with my squad and chased some White Mantle here.”

Didn’t Rescue Bennett in Raid: “I’ve been thanking Dwayna that the rescue team found me in time. If not for them, I’d be rotting in a ditch.”

Rescued Bennett in Raid: “I’ve been thanking Dwayna you busted me out of that infernal place. If not for you, I’d be rotting in a ditch.”

And that is for a simple case of boolean (achievement or not). I can’t imagine the work load if you want to take into account race/orders/PS choices …. A big amount of work for writers!

It’s a lot to manage, and we don’t/can’t factor in every possible permutation, but we try to hit the big ones. A lot of that comes from fans pointing out that it feels more immersive, so we try to make that effort.

The debate has strongly shifted since the beginning. The question was not to know if there would be story in the raid that is tied to the world lore, it was more to know if this story was mandatory to understand what happens in LS.
And the answer is NO.
The events of chapter 1 are independent and the circumstances are well explained. The main villain we are chasing in the story is not a villain from the raid. We actually did not know that this very character was in the position of leading this group.
And the final appearance only happens in the story, not the raid. Actually after the raid the question on the survival of this character was basically in the same state than after GW:EN. We only discovered he is alive yesterday.
We also discovered yesterday that things were not as smooth as we thought within a certain group of enemy.

To me, raid story was as promised : a spin off of the main show. If you don’t see it you still understand the main story. If you did see it you get a bit more in touch with some character because you know where they are coming from…. this is exactly what happens in the PS when you are not sylvari and meet Carys and Tegwen or when human player were so happy to meet Riot Alice in Dry Top while I had no clue of who she was.

This is what I’ve been trying to say for months, but couldn’t until the LW content was released. Thank you.

Can the devs answer whether or not this lore bit from the Squad Leader is different for raiders? This is an actual concern I want to go through.

(Side note: letters from multiple sources isn’t impossible, given that you did that with the letters from the DE member of your race in the PS, and during F&F which was from DE of your race or Almorra if you were vigil )

It was impossible from a budget standpoint. Having to write 5 letters per dungeon meant we’d have to write 40 letters total instead of 8. From a logistical standpoint it would have driven up costs for localization and editing. These mails were generated very late in the development process. Multiplying them would have resulted in the wordcount ballooning by 5 times.

Maybe you’d make better use of your scarce writing resources than to have them write raid ‘lore’ which only a small minority of players will ever experience and even fewer will ever bother reading on their charge through the instance to get to the phat lewt most of them are there for.

Just saying.

It gets very tiresome when we deal with the same individual time and time again even though there are other alternatives (no wiki link, but remember “Your Herald” from the dungeons? Said he’d follow your progress… whatever happened to him and his warnings of ongoing happening?) that once were introduced.

I think you need to balance how you use particular characters. I think it’s bad form to throw “one-offs” all over the place that are there for purely functional reasons, but have zero personality or reuse potential. In Ela’s case, she’s a natural fit for imparting a lot of supplementary info of current (and past) events, and since she was a (small) part of the Season 2 story there’s a bit more context. Granted, she doesn’t have much to say outside of factual info, so if we were to do anything else with her I’d hope we’d flesh out her personality some more. But I hear where you’re coming from.

Your Herald was mostly a functional creation from what I understand. The dungeon letters needed to come from someone, and since we had some technical constraints that made it difficult (if not impossible) to originate from multiple potential sources based on your character’s decisions a nameless character was introduced. It’s kind of like the Tyrian Explorers Society notes you get for map completion. I think both have the potential to be very interesting but there wasn’t much need to develop them beyond the initial implementation. Perhaps that will change in the future. No promises, though.

Are the Modus Scelerit Cancelled?

Not sure what you mean by this. Can you elaborate?

I can for him. The Modus Scelris were series of events added with Halloween 2012. There was mention that they’d be a running plot, I think – or at least people were left with that impression. But nothing has happened to them since.

wouw’s asking if there’s any plans for them in the future, or if they were a one-release trick. Many folks are hoping they get expanded.

Heck, given the LW3 teasers, they could even become one of those groups vying for the magical power released by Mordy.

Adding to that: Halloween 2012 introduced the idea of content delivery, without much explanation (aka there were things added to the game, without any hints).
There was a quote somewhere, that not enough people got the new content and thus it wasn’t expanded further for a long time.
Basicaly the new content came to early, while people were still experiencing the game for the first time.

This could be a reason why it wasn’t followed up.

Disclaimer: I didn’t work on the Modus Sceleris content so I’m not sure what the long term plan was, originally. I do get the impression that the team that added it did so with intentions to develop it over time, but there was likely a change in direction (e.g. LW Season 1) that caused it to be shelved. Those folks probably got assigned to other projects, if memory serves me.

Would we ever use Modus Sceleris again? I think if we had a compelling reason we would, but they’re pretty far down the list (narratively speaking) because there are other stories we’d like to develop and groups we’d like to explore first.

It was said a long time ago that the Elder Dragons don’t have genders as Tyrians understand it. Whether this is a fancy way of saying “Tyrians don’t know if the Elder Dragons are male, female, or neither” or an indirect way of saying “they don’t have genders at all and any association is either ignorance or humanizing”.

Correct. There are probably a few cases in the game where characters casually referred to a particular Elder Dragon as “he” but by and large most Tyrians refer to them as genderless.

So Bobby you are saying that the Twisted Castle was intentional from Xera? For me it looked like some Accident while handling too much Magic over a short Time. More like a Mesmer Nuke went off after she reached the critical Mass of Magic.

Yes, it was intentional. In retrospect, I can see why you’d think it was a by-product of magic overload (similar to what happened to Matthias in wing 2) but she tore it apart willingly.

Edit: When players enter the Twisted Castle area, Xera says some dialog that alludes to this. It’s not listed on the wiki, though, so I would imagine that’s why this detail is hazy for some folks.

There’s a fair amount of dialog that triggers during this section. It’s easy to miss because of all the action, which is one reason why we tend to place most of the narrative bits between fights instead of during them (with a few exceptions).

What would prevent her – or someone as powerful as her – from just carting a bunch of bloodstone shards into DR?

After all, with the barrels of bloodstone shards being shipped about (or so the raid wings imply), isn’t that what the White Mantle are doing already?

Logistics. A full-on frontal assault would be impractical. Sure, they could run caravans full of bloodstone shards, I suppose, but I think they’d be overwhelmed by the Seraph and players before they’d break through the city defenses.

Could they sneak in barrels over time? Maybe. But it wasn’t their priority. Xera was doing something very specific in the raid, and all her resources were focused on its completion.

To me, Xera fails in this too – her powers is so beyond what should be possible for humans, even with bloodstone access. In fact, she is beyond the believable especially given the bloodstone access, given that both Randall Graystone and Matthias both showed that a human trying to control too much magic via bloodstones backlashes – yet this never seems to happen with Xera (unless I missed something). I mean, seeing the Xera fight just made me wonder one thing: why the hell didn’t she just waltz into DR herself and just shift the city into some mental hellhole nightmare fuel? She clearly is fully capable of that given she made the Twisted Castle.

Xera had access to far more magic than Matthias, since a much larger quantity of charged bloodstone shards (and larger fragments) were at her disposal. She was also a more skilled magic user than Matthias, which is why she didn’t “hulk out” as the battle progressed.

She wouldn’t have had access to those magic reserves outside the Stronghold of the Faithful, which is why should couldn’t have performed such an assault on DR. Also, she had more pressing matters at the moment.

Another thing to keep in mind: Xera didn’t create the Twisted Castle from nothing. She took an existing structure and busted it up to form the maze that players had to navigate. It was all an effort to slow them down, since at that point she realized that killing them outright wasn’t really possible since they’d defeated everything she’d thrown at them.

One other thing: there’s a lot of excess magic floating around the Maguuma. When you couple that with charged bloodstone shards and unstable ley rifts, all kinds of chaos can happen (which factors into the mechanics of the final boss fight).

Hopefully, this all came through in the dialog and game mechanics of the final wing. If not, then I’ll take this as constructive feedback to improve on the narrative presentation next time around.

Yup, the only ‘lore’ you might miss by not fighting the actual bosses is some meaningless boss banter to give them some personality and vague hints at what the notes and environment proceed to explain in a crystal clear manner.

I’ve seen quite a few comments like this both here and on Reddit, and I feel I must chime in on this subject which is very dear to my heart as a player interested in Guild Wars 2 lore. I’d argue that people, who don’t play through raid content and only appear after the instance has already been cleared, do miss out on lore. There’s more lore in the raid than just the spoken exposition at the end of Salvation Pass or the written contents of the scattered journals.

The raid team delivers the narrative in many other ways as well as per Guild Wars tradition and have even invented a new, exciting way to do so which is currently exclusive to raids (I hope we’ll see them expand that great narrative concept to other group content like fractals etc. if possible).

I just wanted to call out your thoughtful and informative post. You’re exactly right. A person can get pretty much all of the optional and supplementary lore by exploring a cleared raid instance. They will miss out on character interactions, enemy dialog, and player commentary that would be triggered during fights, however.

We try to structure the cleared raid instance experience to still convey all the most important bits of the narrative. If we’re not meeting that expectation, then we’ll have to look at ways to improve this. You’ve all given us some great feedback for consideration. Thanks for that.

We wanted to experiment with the narrative design on this raid and also give folks an easy way to catch up on the story. I’m hopeful that this is a good first step.

Trust me, I know what it’s like to get destroyed repeatedly by a raid boss. I’m still learning the ropes and am looking to join a casual raiding guild. I just need to make the time!

Here’s a tidbit for lorehounds and non-raiders, in case you’re curious about Stronghold of the Faithful but are nervous about raiding. You can enter wing 3 and get some lore and story bits right at the beginning. Anyone in a raid squad can do it.

Would love to hear from from raiders and non-raiders after the release is live and people have had a chance to check it out. We value your constructive feedback.

Guild Wars 2 Narrative Lead

Hey there. I’ve been seeing some comments regarding the story and lore in the Forsaken Thicket raid, and how that fits into Guild Wars 2. We appreciate your enthusiasm! Just wanted to clarify a few things:

  • It will not be necessary to play Forsaken Thicket—or any future raid—in order to complete Living World or expansion stories. Raids do not gate main story progress.
  • Raid stories can—and should—be thematically tied to Tyrian lore and enhance the game.
  • If any lore information from the raids is relevant to storylines in other content, we’ll make sure that information is also available in that other content.
  • Raids present story in a different manner than elsewhere in the game. They are not a replacement for Living World, expansion, or Personal Story.
  • Output from the raids team isn’t coming at the expense of other projects in development. Raids are made independently of Living World. We do communicate regularly with that team (and we share some resources and assets in both directions) but neither team prevents the other from doing its job.
  • The Forsaken Thicket story will conclude with the release of Stronghold of the Faithful on June 14.
  • Raids are not part of our Living World episodes; they are separate game elements.
  • More information regarding Living World Season 3 will be announced in the future. As always, content will be released when it is ready to ensure the optimal quality for our fans. Hang tight.

I hope this helps people understand things a bit better. Thanks!

A significant part of my storyline seems to have been skipped.

Following the Battle of Fort Trinity we, my friend and I who were completely the story together, were sent to confront a betrayer who was a disguised mesmer of Zhaitan. This betrayer while still in disguise and several minor characters who we interacted with referenced events that we did not take part in but our character’s were explicitly a part of, specifically the firing of some canon upon Vigil troops.

These were with new characters made earlier this year.

Which really only extends so far as to show that “Koss on Koss” in Tyria is not a book written by Koss about his five sons named Koss, Koss, Koss, Koss, and Koss, but an autobiographical book by Koss, and aside from writing this book only confirms he married Melonni.

Yeah, that text is completely new and different than what I wrote so many years ago…

I don’t believe we’ve ever explored what happened to Koss after Nightfall.

You did, but only very minutely.

Good catch!

That stated, if it’s not in the game it’s not canon! Feel free to RP, though.

I feel a great disturbance in the lore, as if numerous out of game lore articles and interviews cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has just happened.

Nah. That’s just me putting an asterisk on my “behind the scenes” comment. I don’t believe we’ve ever explored what happened to Koss after Nightfall. If we ever decide to do something, I want people to understand that the final outcome might be different from what I said here. Just setting expectations is all.

We used to joke internally that Koss married Melonni and they had a big family, but I don’t believe we’ve ever stated this in the game or anywhere else. When we were prototyping some ideas for GW2 back in 2008, I wrote a joke book called “Koss on Koss” where he dedicates it to his five sons, Koss, Koss, Koss, Koss, and Koss. I think Linsey turned it into a back item.

That stated, if it’s not in the game it’s not canon! Feel free to RP, though.

This also regretably means I got none of the rewards for doing the last 2 chains. Is there any way this issue can be fixed? Thanks

You’d have to contact customer support about that. We can’t reset your PS progress on that character to allow you to play that content once you’ve progressed past it.

I just got bumped straight from “Forging the Pact” to “The Battle of Fort Trinity”.
Suspecting this has to do with joining others story instances.

Hard to tell without knowing more details. PM me if you want to provide them.

Correct. Let us know if anything isn’t working in regards to this. Thanks!

VoD is still bugged. my wife is trying to finish her story line and she cant interact with the cannons. i’m putting this up because…. well, its better if i do it. (this is the 2nd story line that has crashed on her in a week)

Are you and your wife still experiencing issues with the cannon interactions in Victory or Death? This was fixed a while ago and shouldn’t be happening.

yes, still bugged. this is the first time she has tried doing it since and i was in the party. she gets into the airship and nothing triggers at the cannons. she is quite frustrated at this point.

I couldn’t reproduce this. Please message me if this is still blocking your progress. Thanks.

It helps to remember that the narrator of the cinematic is a human Pact member who is telling players his version of the events from 200+ years prior. He’s certainly biased, as is Krytan royalty past and present. If you have a chance to watch the most recent live stream that should put things into context.

TL;DR – Bennett’s version of history was intentional.

So basically “cannot comment on it” – but what’s odd, to me, is that he commented on it 2 months ago. Which implies to me (tinfoil hat time) that there was a change on the subject matter.

Actually, there’s been no change. We’re always looking at ways to improve the game, and LWS1 is just one of many potential projects that gets discussed periodically. Feel free to speculate (and continue to express support for the things you’d like to see), but ultimately you should refer to official announcements for things like this. Thanks!
