Some additional PS Restoration fixes went live on the 15th:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Game-Update-Notes-December-15-2015
Personal Story
- Updated the required level messaging for “Against the Corruption,” “Cathedral of Silence,” “Romke’s Final Voyage,” and “Source of Orr” from 70 to 80.
- Updated “Against the Corruption,” “Cathedral of Silence,” and “Romke’s Final Voyage” to give out level-appropriate rewards.
The only thing that Colin said would be is Season 1. Which is not the same as the Personal Story. And even that is just the stated hope for.
Which honestly there is no reason not to.
He said both at different times.
Can you find a quote where he said that? To the best of my knowledge we’ve never had plans to make the Personal Story in the core game repeatable on a single character. The design was, as I understood it, to encourage replay of PS on alt characters.
Interesting theories. I’ll do my best not to meddle in the discussion until after all three wings have been released and the full story is out there. Carry on!
isn`t that why you can explore the whole thing freely after beating it?
on that note, can`t someone who has beaten it, other who hasn`t and thus allows them to get the hidden story snippets?
The things, we get after the whole fighting.
A player who has beaten the raid can bring along a player who hasn’t and they can explore the map together without worrying about fighting the bosses or other enemies. It’s actually a really good way to find all the notes, since you can take it at your own pace.
Related to this thread: WoodenPotatoes also posted a lore analysis video, so if you’re not worried about potential spoilers you may want to check it out.
Also, the wiki folks have been busy documenting all the dialog and achievements if people would rather read about it.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Spirit_Vale
Bear in mind it’s a work in progress (a bunch of the dialog variants aren’t listed…because there are a lot of them that could play depending on who triggers something to happen and what race they are, etc.) but there’s a lot of great info there to dig into.
Hello i can’t complete my personal story mission Victory or death.
When I go to the airship npc don’t move so i must alone defeat this giants and when helicopter arive they don’t go with me so i can’t defeat this boss he one shoted me
How can i complete this mission ? please help me
The NPCs don’t leave the cabin, but they will defend you if any enemies follow you inside. They also won’t leave the airship to help you fight the enemies on the ground. This is all part of the design so it’s not a bug.
If you need help, I recommend forming a party. The last story step is soloable, but it can be difficult for some players. To put it into perspective, I brought some friends (and a few strangers) along with me during this story step because I found some of the encounters a bit too hard to solo. But I know others who breezed through it on their own.
Lol, still no developer response. They must be so ashamed.
Or maybe we already did in another thread from a year ago.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lore/Naming-Mordremoth/page/2#post4236417
…
Thankfully I don’t have to make time to do any of this.
The eternal struggle.
Aww, please? It feels so disjointed to have that un-replayable and it makes documentation for the wiki a huge pain!
Would cookies and Vodka make things more likely?
Haha. Well, it may depend on what brand of vodka and if the cookies have chocolate chips in them.
Side note: thanks to you and the other folk for updating the wiki with the new changes. Much obliged.
I guess my six remaining characters will not be progressing past chapter 6 for a while now.
At a glance it doesn’t seem like a huge undertaking to fix that bug, but since I’m not the person who would be doing the work I can’t say for certain. Hang tight.
On a similar topic: Now that HoT is out, is there any update to be had regarding Season 1 being made permanent content?
Not at the moment.
Is it still simply on the table, has it been taken off the table, is it on an up-coming to-do list without an ETA, or perhaps it is being worked on?
We’re inspecting the table, since it often has a lot of things on it. No ETA on when the inspection will be done, but it’s on the list.
And I know this is beyond unlikely but… any chance there’s an update on the PS becoming replayable being a possibility?
That’s not my decision to make, but if I were a betting man I’d say it won’t happen.
First off, thanks again for doing this restoration: going through the Orr storyline just before HoT launched and having everything back like it was at launch (and apparently improved!) was wonderful.
You’re welcome!
…there is one thing that I’d still like to see changed: the reward structure for the final two chapters. All the restored missions simply reward three bags of loot, and the end of chapter seven rewards (such as a pair of level 70 exotic boots) are still part of The Source of Orr, despite being back to the second-to-last mission of the personal story. Heck, it’s still a level 70 mission, a dozen missions into the level 80 quest line! While it’s great to have the story intact again, could we please reorganize the rewards so the level 70 gear is rewarded during the level 70 arc, as well as make sure missions in the level 80 arc are actually level 80?
There’s an open bug on this issue. Now that HoT is out someone should be able to investigate it. I don’t have an ETA on when a fix would be available, but it’s on the list of things to do.
Update: The Forging the Pact bug fix was included in yesterday’s hotfix. Here’s the excerpt from the release notes:
“Fixed an issue in which completing the story step Forging the Pact was incorrectly assigning players Shell Shock. Completing Forging the Pact will now assign the next quest correctly.”
If your character hasn’t yet completed Forging the Pact then you’ll be correctly placed on the successor story step based on your Greatest Fear choice.
If your character has already completed Forging the Pact and was incorrectly put on Shell Shock chain as a result of the bug, then you will have to complete that active story chain.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
We’ve got someone looking into the Greatest Fear successor story steps issue. I don’t have an ETA but wanted to let you know it’s being investigated. Thanks for your patience.
From a post in another thread, there’s a potential fix coming on Friday.
Correct! The fix for this bug goes live on Friday. Please let us know if you’re still experiencing this issue after Heart of Thorns releases.
1. Will Season 2 remain in the game after Heart of Thorns? Will I need to rush through the content if it is going away?
Season 2 is permanent content. Once you purchase it, you can play it as many times as you want at your own pace. There is no need to rush through it unless you want to. The events of Season 2 lead into the Heart of Thorns story, but it’s not required that you play Season 2 in order to understand what’s going on in HoT. (That stated, I recommend that you do play Season 2!)
2. Will I be able to do the Living Story events at Drytop and Silverwaste or will I be too late? I would like to be able to get to farm the fossil weapons and do Vinewrath and such.
You will still be able to play events and Living World Season 2 story content in Dry Top and the Silverwastes after HoT launches. If you need help in certain areas, you can use the LFG tool to find other players. (Or you can use local or map chat to team up.)
Also, thank you to everyone who helped answer the OP’s questions.
Your issue may be related to a Story Journal bug that was reported earlier.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Personal-Story-Skipped-every-mission-in-Orr/first
The good news is that we’re deploying a fix with the Heart of Thorns release (10/23) that should correct the problem, assuming it’s the same underlying issue.
Please report back if this is still an issue after the 10/23 update. I may ask for some additional info. Thanks!
In the meantime, check your Content Guide settings to make sure they’re allowing display of Personal Story steps:
F11 > Content Guide > Default
Thanks much.
One other thing: the Story Journal display bug should be fixed with the release of Heart of Thorns. It wasn’t caused by (or directly related to) the Personal Story restoration effort, but was impacting some players who were actively doing the content. Thanks for your patience, and for bringing it to our attention.
I know this is really late but I just want to say thank you for listening to players in this particular matter. … Thank you Arena, for listening to players that appreciate and value this immersive solo experience.
Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot to us.
I just want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed their thoughts, opinions, and ideas regarding the Personal Story changes. The response was overwhelming, and it was one of the reasons why we focused not on simply putting things backs the way they were, but on improving the overall experience where possible. It showed us that there are lots of people playing our game who care about the story. Thanks for speaking up.
Your issue may be related to a Story Journal bug.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Personal-Story-Skipped-every-mission-in-Orr/first
This particular fix should go live on 10/23 with the launch of Heart of Thorns.
I certainly wouldn’t mind replaying some Season 2 episodes if you need some help. I’m a little busy these next few weeks, but if you see me in the game and want some company feel free to message me.
Looks bugged again. Stuck at giants, impossible to interact with turrets
It worked the next time I tried it, so it looks like some kind of random error.
Glad to hear it’s working for you again.
I think the main concern regarding this is the level of importance of the story.
It’ll be interesting to read people’s feedback as each wing is released, and their reactions to what comes after.
Yup! Which is why we’re taking a different approach in raids. Play the beta if you can. You’ll see what I mean.
As the raids have been taken offline and won’t be active this weekend anymore. (I pray there will be an unannounced extra BWE for Druid, Scrapper and Raids), is there a chance you could enlighten us about the new way of storytelling (in raids at least) ?
WoodenPotatoes discussed some of the things I was alluding to in his latest video.
https://youtu.be/teqDb_IM8BU?t=4m26s
Around the 5:25 mark he relays a story of his friend’s experience inside the raid in terms of how players speak, etc.
tl;dr Thumbs up on the narrative improvements and level design. Can’t wait to get a party in here to try out the encounter.
Thank you for the kind words!
- I can’t talk about the “huge awesome mega reveals” other than to say that since the wings are essentially a multi-part story you will learn things along the way. Anything vital to the raid story will happen naturally and unobtrusively, but we’ll also have some optional stuff scattered around to discover. You’ll see elements of this in the beta that are carried through the entire first wing.
Does that mean we won’t be forced to sit around twiddling our thumbs waiting for some NPCs to talk on every run through the raid?
This is something we’re very mindful of, so we’ve been working hard to find better ways of dispensing essential plot information and gameplay feedback without grinding things to a halt. You can get a feel for how we’re doing that in the raid beta that starts today. That stated, there is some optional stuff we’ve put in the raid so if you’re waiting around for your squad to get ready you can walk around, talk to NPCs (in the safe areas), and potentially find some cool things we’ve stashed in there.
We realize that there are a lot of players who want to get right into the action, so we’re doing what we can to allow for that. Play the beta and let us know what you think!
Can’t you do it like dungeons or fractals? Most of the stories were delivered completely in a non obtrusive way. Just add cutscenes whenever necessary and let us press a skip button.
We could except for the fact that we don’t build our cinematics like that anymore. We’ve instead opted for a more “in the moment” approach. Play the raid. You’ll see what I mean.
I’d like to point out, making us watch certain cutscenes, unskippable ones that is, every time should not be a thing. I am honestly fed up with molten duo introduction in fractals by now. I get that at the time this wasn’t intended to be a repeatable fractal, but for future cutscenes I hope this doesn’t happen again.

What’s your name?
Bobby Stein
What do you do at ArenaNet?
I’m the Lead Narrative Designer (formerly known as Lead Writer). I work with narrative folk, designers, artists, audio engineers, and programmers to bring out the story in our game. It’s a collaborative effort from concept to completion, and I’m honored to work with such awesome people on a daily basis. I mostly help or collaborate with others on polishing and presenting story ideas inside our game. The work is a mix of technical and creative, with management responsibilities thrown in for good measure.
I’ve been with ArenaNet for about a decade and have worked on just about every title and release. (My invisible beard is long.)
What has been your involvement with Raids?
Writing scripts, consulting on VO sessions, and working with the team to present the narrative bits in new ways that synchronize with gameplay, art, and audio. Basically, working with the awesome folks on this team to deliver a story that’s fitting for this kind of content, while trying to innovate in the process.
What feature of Raids are you most excited about?
We’re trying an evolved approach to how, when, and where the characters speak inside raids. Really interested to hear player feedback from the beta, because we’re doing some exciting new things with our narrative tech that deviate a bit from how we do things inside story instances. Also working with artists to tell visual stories.
What’s a funny story about something that’s happened to you or your party while play-testing Raids?
I have a few!
I sat in on one of the internal play sessions. Everyone in the raid squad was busy setting up their characters for the upcoming fight but one person started walking around inspecting stuff. Then, above the usual chatter, she said, “Hey! My character just said something cool when I [redacted]!”
When I later explained to the team that we were experimenting with ways to mix up the dialog, and that in one particular case there were something like 3 dozen possible combinations a player could hear when X happens, they smiled. Small things like that make me very happy. There are a lot of little details with how we’re presenting this stuff that hopefully add up to form an immersive, satisfying experience.
Lastly, there was this one time where I was running around the map inside an area that Tirzah had recently arted, and I noticed that she added some new props where we had placed an interactive gadget. At first I didn’t really think about what I was looking at, but when I realized that the objects and their placement told a mini story about how that stuff got there, I gave her a high five over Communicator. (I won’t spoil what it was. You’ll have to find it—and all the other cool things that are scattered around—when the first wing releases.)
What was your favorite encounter from the existing dungeon/fotm content? Why?
Running with an experienced party who didn’t mind showing a less-experienced player (a.k.a. me) how to beat Caudecus’s Manor. Disclosure: I’m not a hardcore dungeon runner or raider, so being on this team has been really educational!
Anything else you feel like sharing!
This is a great team and I’m honored to be a part of it. Special shout out to Charlie, our Content Programmer, on all his wonderful work and input in building a lot of these narrative bits.

Some notes regarding story presentation in raids:
- As stated in the Twitchcon interview, the first raid wing takes place shortly after the conclusion of the HoT story in the timeline.
But… wait, does this mean that if I try to do the first wing during the last Beta Weekend, I’ll be spoiled about HoT’s conclusion ?
No. Any items that directly reference the HoT ending aren’t in the raid beta.
We are already here
Who let Paul in here?
Some notes regarding story presentation in raids:
- As stated in the Twitchcon interview, the first raid wing takes place shortly after the conclusion of the HoT story in the timeline.
- All three wings are connected via theme and plot. Ideally, players will experience them in linear order for the best possible experience but, like Living World releases or dungeons you can play them in whatever order you choose, as many times as you like.
- You can play the first area of the first raid wing in this weekend’s beta. I encourage folks to form a raid team and check it out. If you have thoughts or opinions on how we’re presenting the story stuff we’d like to hear them. Just bear in mind that some things in this area were intentionally turned off for the beta to avoid spoilers. The final version will have some extra stuff. Not going to be any more specific than that.

- We’ve added Raids to the Dungeons and Fractals forum. Please consider adding your thoughts, ideas, and feedback there to keep things organized.

- Lots more I’d like to talk about but now’s not the time. My advice: log in and check it out for yourself this weekend!
Update: The issue is fixed in our development environment and should go live when HoT launches, if all goes according to schedule. No one should have lost any story progress—the bug was with how we were displaying the Story Journal information, not with the progress information itself.
Thanks for your patience.
I think I’ve figured it out. On the third console, after defeating the mobs, when it says “discuss with your friends” DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TALK TO THEM. They will start talking amongst themselves. Just to be safe, I didn’t even move when they were talking, and it let me right on through. I think if you attempt to talk to them, it bugs the conversation, so the text is misleading. It should say “listen to your friends discuss the situation”.
I’ll take this information (along with raenen’s post) and include it in the bug and/or internal documentation we’ve got on this.
This is a known issue. We’re currently testing a fix in our development environment. Updates can be found in the following thread:
I just wanted to provide an update for you all. We’ve been investigating the cause of VO failing to play under certain circumstances, and we think we’ve fixed it in our development environment. We’re now planning some tests to verify if the fix worked. I don’t have an ETA on when a patch would be deployed but I wanted you to know that we’re closer to a resolution. Thanks for your patience and for reporting the issue.
Just popping in to give you all an update. We had some folks investigate the issue, and we think we’ve figured out what’s causing the Story Journal to drop entries from view. We’re in the process of arranging some tests to see if the fix works as intended. I don’t have an ETA on when a patch might be deployed, but I do want to let you know that we’re closer to finding a resolution. Thanks for your patience, and for providing us with enough information to track this down.
My personal story log now says I am back on Chapter 7, Forging the Pact.
But the steps I am going through in the actual quests I am getting is Chapter 8 (I am up to Through the Looking Glass again). Will I actually finish my Personal Story if I keep going?
Hi Lyzandia. This is a known issue that we’re currently investigating. If you don’t mind, please post your information (e.g. a screenshot of your Story Journal and Content Guide UI) in this thread:
Thanks much.
noticed something weird yesterday …
My personal story journal entry stop at ‘’ Forming the Pact ’’
I finished my personal story a day or two after the Giant airship bug was fixed , i completed Victory or death solo with my Mesmer .. Killed Zaithan and received the rewards and all …. but no #8 ‘’ Victory or death ’’ in my journal entry
before entering Arah .. i remember the green star on cursed shore map , and ‘’ victory or death ’’ in the top right corner of my screen… looks like my journal didn’t updated.
This is a known issue with the Story Journal that’s being tracked in a different thread. Feel free to post your info here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Personal-Story-Skipped-every-mission-in-Orr/first
Thanks!
This mission, like others and even generally throughout the game, bugs me with the fact that NPCs won’t help you when they really should. They’re supposed to be your comrades, but they stand there looking stupid. It would be less frustrating if you were alone. In other times, I found myself defeated on the ground with some NPC standing nearby picking his nose. “I’m right here! Res me!! I did it for you!!!”
I can only assume the NPCs are mostly jerks who revel in my anguish.
The NPCs on the airship stay in the kittenpit (EDIT for kitten censor: control room where people steer the airship) during the first phase. They’ll help you if any creatures follow you inside, but they won’t venture on to the deck. This was by design due to some pretty specific technical conditions that are unique to this particular story step.
This instance is still bugged and I can’t progress – why or why can’t it be fixed??? It’s been months – I think since it was made single player. Please, please I would like to finish the end game before HoT.
What specifically happened in your case? Were your turrets not interactive or did something else happen?
I was able to finish Victory or Death with a party on Saturday, so if a new issue has popped up I’d like the details so I can investigate. Thanks!
@BobbyStein:
I can’t continue personal story after chapter 7 Forging the Pact.
“My Greatest Fear” should be next in line, but it doesn’t show up on the map or journal
what I tried:
- contacted support and filed a bug report back in June after the update
- contacted support again two days ago
- replayed Forging the Pact with other players for the chance to trigger the next stepNow it’s already been 2 months and my issue hasn’t been resolved and customer support didn’t help besides telling me to bug report it again and write in the forums.
Could you please fix this issue?
I’d really appreciate it!
tyvm
Hi Hidori. Would you mind posting your issue in this other thread?
I’ve been tracking some reports and working with a few folks internally to figure out what’s going on with this particular issue. A screenshot and short description of repro steps would be helpful. Keeping it all in a dedicated thread makes it easier.
Do you remember at what point the story steps disappeared from your journal? We’ve had some reports where people have been able to keep playing but the journal entries weren’t displaying. Just want to get as much information as possible so we can investigate. Please post your replies in that thread I mentioned.
Thanks.
So I just completed the Greatest Fear chapter with Tonn and I noticed that for whatever reason the dialogue is muted in some places during cutscenes. This has also happened in some LS instances as well (in Dragon’s Reach part1 for me). Not sure how far this has spread and I’m hoping you can take a look at it.
Thank you.
This is a bit off topic, but I’ll address it.
I noticed that VO issue the other day in the Black Citadel and sent word over to the Audio team. If you find this happening again, can you create a new thread in the appropriate forum and attach a screenshot? We need to see the chat log output (or the text bubble for the missing VO) to get a repro. Thanks!
This happens in most personal story instances as well as cut scenes in dungeons. You can read the text but some of the vocals do not play. The strange part being the scene waits an appropriate amount of time.
Some advice courtesy of our audio department: See if moving the audio quality slider to Fastest helps.
F11 > Sound Options > Sound Quality: Fastest
Tested this to see if it helped and at first in the Order of whispers audio it did seem to help. But then i tested it in the Orr personal story steps and the bug reappeard.
So i don’t this the bug is connected to the sound options slider.
OK, thanks for the information. Since this issue isn’t tied to the Personal Story Restoration, I’d appreciate it if people posted their findings in this other thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Personal-Story-Audio-Problem/first#post5360836
For the record, I’m not sure the problem is restricted to the Personal Story but may be appearing in other content types. But if you’re experiencing missing VO (or VO that’s failing to play) in the Personal Story you can post info in the above thread. The Audio Team is investigating the issue, so we appreciate your patience in the meantime.
If the message is already in your mailbox then it will not be sent again, you have to read the one already in your mailbox or delete that one first.
Thanks for pointing this out. This is exactly right. If you’ve started this story before and received the mail already, then it won’t be resent. You have to find it in your inbox and select it to complete the active step and progress the episode.
Is everyone getting stuck during the step “Discuss what to do next with your friends”? I would like to investigate the issue but need to know some details so we can have some internal folks try to track down what’s causing it.
If you’re experiencing this blocking bug in Discovering Scarlet’s Breakthrough please post repro steps if you can:
Example:
- Activated Episode 2 in the Story Journal
- Completed Scarlet’s Secret Room
- Completed all steps leading up to “Discuss what to do next with your friends.”
- Progress stalled when X happened
Screenshots are also helpful.
The Audio team is investigating. In the meantime, see if moving the audio quality slider to Fastest helps.

Thank you sooo much for fixing Victory or Death. Mine is finally complete, and it was epic!
I’ll relay that to the team. Glad it worked out for you (and others)!
Thanks for the info. We’re investigating the issue.
NPCs is still inactive.
I don’t know what you mean by this. Can you provide more information?
-NPCs are inactive (I think I triggered them after falling down through the airship floor. Zojja ran down to heal me, and when I was revived, all NPCs started to fight. After being killed, the NPCs became inactive again)
This is earlier posted in an support ticket.
Destiny’s Edge will fight anything that wanders into the cabin, and they’ll rez you if you go down but I don’t believe they’re set up to fight on deck due to some situations and tech considerations that are specific to this story step. We discussed changing their behavior when we converted Victory or Death to be soloable but it was out of scope for a variety of reasons.
NPCs is still inactive.
I don’t know what you mean by this. Can you provide more information?
