“Having more time gated but consistent payout systems would alleviate some of the rng pain” no that would not make it better, in a way the gold grind already does that. It’s a really consistent payout but just takes time to get the money you need to buy. Also I do not need to get stuff for free only by putting in ‘waiting time’. That sounds interesting to you?

About the materials, that would already be nice if it would be directly obtainable in a viable way instead of the only viable way being the grind gold and buy it. Even is the total time spend might still be similar (for most).

Perhaps I am the one missing the point, but it seems like this is mostly a case of not being able to have it all, along with the additional need to have multi-month time sinks for players that invest 4+ hours a day.

If you tie rewards to going around the world doing specific goals, then either the dedicated players will blow through everything in a month and complain about there being nothing to do, or you have to set each goal to take 60 hours or so in order to gate it to two goals a month max. If you require 60 hours of, say, jumping puzzles to get a mini or a skin, then you’ve created a typical “grind” of the type Anet is trying to avoid.

To avoid that issue you can substitute gold. If everything generates gold, and gold can buy everything, then you can do whatever you want for 60 hours and buy your item, or just buy gold with cash and fund the game, or be an auction house trader, or whatever strikes your fancy. Of course, the unintended side effect seems to be that people who are playing for direct pursuit of goals find themselves in a permanent “meta grind”…. grind gold, non-stop, for everything you want.

To avoid that issue you can time gate instead, but investing “waiting time” isn’t exactly riveting or challenging game play.

I honestly sympathize with the game designers. I don’t know how you balance people who play two hours a week with those who play 6 hours a day, and people who are highly skilled with people who can’t ever finish a jumping puzzle and just mash buttons as they come off cooldown, and still have everyone feel equally entertained and rewarded.

If you are that dedicated, you can farm enough gold to buy almost anything you want (grind for gold). If you u are that bad that you can’t even finish a jumping puzzle, you can easily use your credit card and buy almost anything you want.

But this system is alienating everyone who wants to get things by doing something challenging alone or with their friends. Farming gold or trading gems is not fun or challenging… it is boring.

Yes there are some things that cannot be obtained by gold but the RNG chances on this type of things are way too harsh. If you are not born under the lucky star you may grind for these for months, maybe even years which is far worst than in other games.

You can change profession too! And in almost exactly same way as Rytlock did!

Tutorial:

  1. Enter the Heart of the Mists (yea mysts are mandatory for Rytlock as well as you)
  2. Band with other heroes and fight for your destiny against others like you to earn 80 Tomes of Knowledge
  3. Leave mysts and store Tomes in your bank
  4. Commit ingame suicide… for example jump from the statue of Dwayna in Divinity’s Reach
  5. Log out
  6. Delete your undesired character and make the exact visual copy of it with same nickname but different profession
  7. Log in with your new-old heroe and find nearest bank
  8. Take all 80 Tomes of knowledge and click on them like a mad man for a while
  9. :) enjoy

Rytlock might simply have returned from the Mists with his new powers before he went into the Mists.

But if he returned from the mists before he went into the mists, he would pretty much copy himself indefinitely which could be problem for Tyria. Milions of Rytlocks everywhere.

However if there could be only one Rytlock in same time, the returning Rytlock would replace the original Rytloc but the “new Rytlock” would already be a Revenant and already have that funky sword which would mean he wouldnt have reason to go into the mists. But by not going into the mists he would never learn his new craft and never get that funky sword so he would have to go into the mists again in order to get them and this cycle would repeat forever.

In PvE it depends on your build. For both power builds (D/H, DS) it is pretty much 1111111111 and do not stand in aoe

Just by looking at the mats required for full ascended gear with +5 power +5 agony resistance excluding the mats required to level up crafting from 0-500… this is by far the grindiest BiS gear I can think of. I had BiS gear in WoW (both PvP and PvE – this one on 2 characters from T4 to T8) and SWTOR.

You either have to farm certain materials, farm gold or pay with real money (yes, pay to win is an option in this game)….. instead of having fun with friends in dungeon :-/

Nothing .. those are content meant for many teams. Point still stands … in the industry, GW2 is not grindy by traditional definitions. Maybe in 10 years it might be considered so, but for now, only the most noob players would QQ about grindy GW2.

You said people were soloing content meant for teams. I asked you who was soloing the raids. You said noone, cause those are meant for teams.

Sooo…which is it, then? Either people are soloing team content or they aren’t.

Funny, though, casue this game looks like every other MMO on the market to me in terms of grind and RNG, especially with ascended gear.

And I’m not a noob, so looks like you’re wrong.

You are comparing 5 man dungeons with raids dude that is not fair. If you want comapre 5 man dungeons with content from other games than compare them with 5 man dungeons from these games and hey! As a tank (paladin) I soloed bunch of 5 man heroics in epic ascended gear when they were relevant.

Fractals isn’t mandatory.
You can get a completely maxed out character, participate effectively in pve, pvp and wvw without ever touching fractals.

you can say same thing about raids in other games… but still other games are paraded as examples of gear grind even though we have almost exactly same thing in GW2.

There is polearm or staff at 1:35.

I want to see some magic kind warrior with staff.

It is not polearm, polearm has to have pointed head with blade on the side of the head. 1:35 has blunt head which is clearly visible at 1:37 and 1:38.

Almost exactly like weapon on this picture which is btw a mace.

ESO is going to be B2P in March… they have dungeons….. much better dungeons than GW2. They also have trinity but with active combat like GW2.

I think this game might appeal to us – dungeoneers more.

I think it will work on very simple principle of giving and taking. If you take the new spec a.k.a druid for example, you will have to sacrifice certain traits, skills and maybe even weapons of basic ranger.

I bet my money on something generec and boring like “vanguard” or “gladiator”.. one extremy tanky with suportive skills a.k.a shout warrior but with more swag, the other one squishy with superior dps comapred to vanila warrior and vanguard but with less effective suport skills than vanguard and vanila warrior.

  • Revenant – Uses a Spear (proof)

This is not a spear. A weapon in this trailer has a ball with spikes at the end of the shaft which may be a staff or a mace with very long shaft which would be in game classified as hammer. A spear would have pointed head.

They talked about challenging group content. I think stuff like Tequatl and Great Jungle Wurm are the closest to raids we’ll be getting.

Today I did Teq with my lvl 50 thief… how is that challenging? I got carried no problemo, got final reward and everything.

They have tanks, dps and healers in other games. Tanks are using defensive stats, DPS is using offensive stats, and healers are using healing increasing stats.

If you take a tank and slap healing gear on him, he would be garbage tank and equally bad healer. Nobody is DPSing in tanking gear either.

In this game we have only DPS therefore offensive stats being meta is simply matter of common sense. Deal with it.

It affords an intrinsic value to offensive stats that is not shared in others when those passive stats are not tied to mechanics that can be actively applied to defeat the enemy in a more effective manner.

So you basically wants to turn defensive stats into offensive output… dude why not just equip gear with offensive stats instead? Why would they (devs) waste their time by redesigning entire game instead of making new content?

Croc you are not just beating a dead horse… you are beating a already petrified skeleton of a long dead prehistoric creature on display in local museum.

An inclusion of further base tools and abilities that could be used regardless of what you are wearing, but would become more advantageous depening upon whether you put on glassy gear or defensive gear, would follow the same philosophy that currently works where content can be completed naked, but putting on berserker gear ramps up your offense to cut down on the time to defeat the enemy further with greater effectiveness of abilities.

Translation: you want to be rewarded for wearing tanky gear beyond the fact that you are nearly invincible. that sounds like horrible game design.

You came too late to the party with your warrior OP. The Elementalists are new warriors now Better DPS, better team utility, better versatility.

Warriors are still popular because they are easy to stack. You can’t go wrong with 3 warriors in a group, they just ping their banner into the chat to make sure they are using diffrent one a you are ready to go. Good DPS (not best though), plenty of buffs and best looking armor sets

No you can’t (at least not traditional MMO kind of tank). A DPS in tanking gear is as close as you can get. Unless you somehow come with a guaranteed way of holding aggro on you, you are not a “tank”. It is same as playing a DPS in tanking gear in other games… you are not tanking anything but you are garbage dps.

This is why I think “zerker problem” is just in people’s heads. They see “tanking gear” and wants to play a tank… in a game without aggro management. Tanking/healing gear is nothing more than “starting” gear that is meant to be replaced by proper DPS stats when you learn how to not die.

But I agree with the rest of your post They should tweak dungeon monsters/bosses to be more condi-dps friendly.

Removing the holy trinity was a big fail. It’s the reason you get such amazing game play like stacking in a corner to kill a boss.

it is not just that… also resurrecting in combat, downed state, dodges etc.

There is stacking in games with trinity too. Everyone just “stack” behind boss Stacking is normal.

There is no such thing as zerker problem and zerker meta.

Berserker stats are the most common stats for DPS class in MMO (and arguably RPG) genre.

Since there is no trinity in this game, there is no real need for tanking or healing stats meant for tanks and healers (I gues they have some use in WvWvW). Also any passive mitigation of incoming damage from boss is pretty much pointless. You can mitigate 100% of avoidable damage just by dodging, if you are not that good at dodging u can always use some other form of active protection such as Endrue Pain. Also laughable boss mechanics in dungeons often allows you to simply stack on top of each other and get resurrected almost instantly.

If it won’t be an expansion (a.k.a multiple new zones, dungeons, PvP modes etc… I dont care about form of delivery) I will just quit playing for like 9 months like I already did 2 times and come back to check what is new again most likely during the finale of LS season because it is the most (arguably the only) interesting part of the LS.

There is enough competition in the market hungry for my money and since I dont mind spend money on games (even monthly) I will most likely try ESO once again for at least a month and then go back to SWTOR (with sub).

No forum drama or ragequits ;-)

Also lag issues on the EU are a big dealbraker for many including me. When I use earthshaker skill on my warrior I expect it to execute immediately, not 1 second later when my enemy is no longer in the area of impact. GW2 is the only game in which I have this issue (I play without lag BF3 and4, SWTOR, LoL and SC2 even on KR server ffs).
