Im trying to understand why people don’t like it or are attracted to SPvP, If you ask the PvP forums they all respond with things like “tank meta” or “MMR / leaderboard structure”.
Why dont PvE’ers and WvW’ers like SPvP??
What could be done to fix* it?I am not talking about custom or unranked PvP
Impossible to compete. There is no such thing as learning when you are being steamrolled by the competition.
This is only because the pool of players in sPvP si so small. More ppl = more skill levels. This problem will fix itself if they fix many other problems with PvP in general and sPvP which will bring more players to it.
I was always pvp player in most of mmos I played in past but here.. I dont know all works like a charm but still. I dont see any motivation and I dont mean only rewards. Some even temporary progressions.ething like this we need here.
What I personaly want in SPvP? 1v1 arenas, ladder, tournaments. I am not team player I want just kill opponents and dont care about capturing points.
I would like to see a 2v2 ladder / arena. have you tried the deathmatch map?
The Courtyard (the deathmatch map) is by far the worst map in map pool.
Deathmatch on small map can work only with 1 live per player (aka 5v5 arena in wow) or safe place to regroup. If you add respawns, you must also add a safe place to regroup. Unfortunately this map is too small and there is no such place. You can’t even regroup on spawn because game will teleport you down into the “pit” after short time after respawn. If one team loose more than 1 person, they are most likely doomed to be spawn camped.
Also since this map is so small but yet with many terain features allowing relatively easy loosing of the LoS. It heavily favore classes/builds with strong AOE, mass CC and conditions.
bad bad design.
U can’t make ppl like ranked arenas without them liking unranked arenas
What could be done to fix it?
1. more game modes
2. larger maps
3. on some maps more than just 10 players
4. more sPvP only rewards (that back item is nice, how about whole armour skin obtainable only in sPvP with shoulders obtainable only in ranked arenas … no brutal rating requirements ofc.)
:)
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Even though these are all buffs it is nothing. Condi necro will remain mostly useless on zerg open world bosses and garbage compared to power builds in dungeons. Power necro’s rotation will remain 1111111 with garbage party support/utility.

h, much worse if ANet puts canon support behind racism. There would have to be much better control of in-game trolling and unwelcome RP. I don’t think ANet has the CS team to really manage that.
Nah it is not and will not be that bad as you are portraying it. I have seen some great RP in ESO between Nord players, Dunmer and Argonian players… these races hate each other to the bone but for some strange reason they were thrown into same aliance by game developers. But general non-RP comunity ignore race choice of other players and they just play normaly. However NPCs throw some racist slur in your face here and there
Also in SWTOR on the Empire side, siths are openly racist towards anyone of non pure Sith or Human race amongst their ranks. And once again general population ignores this fact and roleplayers have room for some interesting roleplay. And ofc… if you roll an alien race as sith, NPCs will let you know about your bad choice
Also if you roll pure sith race as Jedi… there wile be some form of prejudice towards your character wherever you go. Very immersive if you ask me
And ofc lets talk about WoW and the Forsaken Sylvari created by evil Lich King Elder Dragon, freed from his influence by Sylvanas Windrunner Pale Tree but nonetheless fighting with others against the Scourge Sylvari minions of the elder dragon no problemo ;-)
Some ppl (almost nonexistant minority) are on the anti Sylvari train only because it is something new after 2,5 years of nothing mixed with Power Rangers rip off season 1. And still it is so rare to encounter anything in game…. it took me a few hours of gameplay to see one “RP-ish” comment in /m in Silverwastes…
Don’t panic.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Looks like they’re adding racial tension. Hope that’s dark enough…
They missed the oportunity of nice racial tension between humans and charr which is shame.
The Elder Scrolls franchise did it right. Even though different races coexisted in same Empire, there was a lot of open or latent racism for several reasons ranging from slavery, ancient unresolved wars, conflicting religions etc. to simple and blunt racial supremacy felt by many… (most notably High Elves).
This added so much to the athmosphere of the world and it is shame we don’t have more of this in GW. And by this I mean not just racism but also political and religious tension or at least rivalry. I know we have the White Mantle, Inquest or Flame legion but in GW it is done in strictly bipolar fashion when we (players and everyone we are in contact with) are the good guys and they are the bad guys and there is no grey area in between.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Btw you are the Forsaken not affected one and Sylvanas Windrunner Pale Tree will lead you togeather with your alies towards the victory over the Lich King Elder Dragon.
Don’t worry

Thanks everyone for your replies. It’s given me a lot to think about.
That said, there were a lot of comments about the meta and how it’s not always great, it’s just the common denominator accepted by the community? Would you recommend avoiding places like metabattle.com and finding my own builds instead?
Any suggestions on sources for builds and profession guides that are pertinent to the current client build?
Well I think if you understand how GW2 works and your goal is not to be hipster of Tyria and play bad build just to play bad build…. you will eventually make something similar to what you can find on metabattle with slight differences maybe in runes, maybe in skills and maybe even in traits here and there but the basic structure of your build will be pretty much same.
This game has only DPS role so your choices are fairly limited. You will either build pure DPS or DPS/support. When you rule out trash traits, worthless skills and pointless weapons… there is not that much to choose from.
But it can also deter from playing. For example I am not doing fractals since I have seen and completed them all (multiple times) and since there is nothing new in them and chances for weapon skins drop is so low, I will not go there unless they add something new (fractal or better boss etc.) or change RNG of weapon skins drop
Armor in PvE is pretty useless in this game… bosses are hitting so hard that having highest possible armor vs no armor at all is like 1 additional hit. Luckily (or not) boss mechanics are so laughable that you can avoid most of their damage by dodging or by using skills with similar utility such as warrior’s GS 3. This is why zerker meta exists in the first place… poorly designed boss encounters, stacking of everything from boons to players standing on same spot for quick rez and ability to avoid most of the damage. And even if you fail at dodging, you group cant stack or any other complication… full zerker group can kill boss so quickly that he has almost no chance to wipe even kitten iest group (ok there are few bosses that can do it…).
Oh and also since you can get BiS exotic gear from farming simple dungeons/paths, noobs who fail at zerking harder bosses do not go into these dungeons at all or get carried by those who has skill to zerker anything and those who can zerker anything do not need other stats than zerker
So no, no trinity in any shape or form… GW2 invented unity
If it would have a new landmass to discover, reworked weapons skills (a.k.a at least 3 to choose from for each slot), new dungeons (the Molten Facility kind of dungeons) and new sPvP modes…. I would buy it.
I am not big fan of Living Storry but episode 8 was the first one that I really enjoyed and I would say that even without the after-teaser for possible expansion.
The overall gameplay was fun, the assault on camp in silverwastes was epic (very nicely scripted… much MUCH better than Claw Island. Even though it was short it felt very fluid and polished…. thumbs up). The end boss was very fun to fight and I almost wish this boss fight was at the end of our personaly story instead of that fiasco with Zaithan.
Im happy that I was around for season finale this time, it was nice
I would like to see:
New and better dungeons, new game modes for PvP, dueling (even instanced), less zergy open world events, better loot system (especially from bosses), class balance in PvP and PvE, reworked necro (maybe even from scratch), better pet AI, at least some trivial NPC AI in open world, less AOE spam in every aspect of the game etc.
there is a lot to work on in this game.
level necro
fun rotation with power builds (either DS or D/D are challenging to master), top tier DPS and party support!
Condi can shine too, especially on world bosses or in speedruns in synergy with LB ranger with bear.
18 dollars for a quest chain? You can get Skyrim for less, expansion to SWTOR costs 20 dollars, you can sub for month to any sub based MMO and complete bunch of these ;-) GW2 istself cost 20 dollars in some e-shops.
You can also get the quest chain for free. Either by logging in when it is live, or by transferring gold to gems.
Also a bit silly to compare a game that have been out for over 3 years with something that have been out for about half a year.
What I am talking about is average bang for the buck. You can get so much more for 20 dollars (story/gameplay/quest wise) than one lousy quest chain.

^ You are aware that you can still access the other parts of the story, right?
So everything since the start of S2 have been permanent as well.
yea for 1200 gems… can we call it paid expansion?
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
What guy above me said + new WoW content is permanent therefore your argument is invalid. If you leave WoW now and return back after 6 months, you will have 6 months worth of content waiting for you (a.k.a whole expansion and at least one content patch) that will entertaint you for months to come. But if you leave GW2 now, and return 6 months later, you will find 1 active episode which may take you at best an hour to complete and if you are crazy about achievements it wont take you more than a week of casual gaming to get them.
I am best example of this. I left GW2 in march and returned about 8 days ago. What I found was 2 new zones (cool) and 1 hour of boring story chain quest that I have no idea what is about because I missed 6 other chain quests before this one. The only achievements that I am missing from silverwastes are gold coins (I hate jumping puzzles btw) and randomly spawning minibosses to kill. :-/ Same old dungeons, same old PvE and PvP meta. I have 3 lvl 80s in exotic gear and I cannot be bothered to level up 4th 80 and experience new trait unlocking system.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
The autobalancing mechanism of GW2 is ability roll new character fitting the curent meta (which is due to lack of balance updates pretty stable in this game).
I hope this helepd you.
haha pure comedy gold
and very convincing. If I took a screenshot and deleted “fake” from their aliases….

Tauren…. Kappa
What kind of groups tend to be kick happy?
Well if you see an LFG for Arah with words like “speedrun, speedclear, fast” and you see an ele, warrior and rogue already in and you play condi necro or bearbow hunter… this group might not be for you
on boss
Deathshroud: #1, towards the end of your life force #2 (only if you are shooting boss from range!) exit DS, switch to dagger and #1 until u fill up your life force again, switch back to axe, go DS and repeat… if it is not dead already ofc.
Lich form: just #1
on Trash
Deathshroud: plonk down well of suffering and enter DS then #5, then 4, if there is anything still alive then exit DS and go horn #5 and dagger #1
Lich form: why would u use this elite skill on trash?
As you can see power necro is very autoattack oriented class at the moment (that moment is 2 years long now btw
)

Got my bingo card ready!
Yusssss
Gonna have ta play a drinking game with my friends when they livestream that speech.
every word “exciting” = shot (vodka in my case)
every “living world” = double shot
I expect to get hammered very fast
Just to put it into perspective…..
Yeah this is pretty unique situation. In most MMOs there is “this class is OP” crowd vs “this class is UP” crowdn and both camps accuse the other one from being stupid and not knowing what are they talking about. Not in this game. There is pretty much universal agreement about necromancer being trash class in any form of PvE except open world solo.
Sadly for us, developers doesnt care….
I like visuals of necro but as PvE player in this game that is about it. Condi necro is big nono and shroud power build is just plain boring. If anyone here played destro PvE warlock in TBC days of WoW this build must be déjà vu to you too. After you popp your cooldowns (well, reapers touch and whatever else) you go DS and spam some shadowbolts ehm life blasts until u run out of life force a.k.a mana lol. Then u hit your axe 2 and build up life force again, use them big CDs and spam life blast again. It looks cool but it is BORING just like meta destro lock in TBC PvE. Oh and if you feel fancy you can use lich form which will make your only usefull skill known as #1 black instead of green. Coooooool….not.
I also tried D/F necro. I had better DPS but… nowhere near as good as my warrior, whole rotation consisted of spaming #1 and well on cooldown with occasional horn #5… boring again. And no cool shroud visuals this time. Why would I not bring warrior instead of necro?
If I were you I would stick with DS build because at least it looks cool, you are spared from not seeing anything through particle effects and hey! You almost never die unless u kitten a lot or it is wipe (is wiping even a thing in GW2 non-pug dungeons btw?).

Putting precursors on the Gemstore is basically “pay to win” something Anet will never do. And if precursors are “clearly cosmetic” what stops them from just selling the skin instead of the exotic?
You can already pay for gems, sell them for gold and instantly win your legendary on TP ;-)
2h swords… they are pretty much the only pve meta for warrior. Yea you can run axe axe but you can also use only virtual keyboard instead of real one on your PC but why would you do that… it gets job done but it is far less efficient :/
1h sword and shield anyone? mace and shield?
They already kind of are in the gem store.
Buy gems then sell them for gold then buy whatever precursor or legendary you want on TP
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
I wouldnt hope for too much. At best it would be another quality of life patch and LS3. Expansion without any infrastructure such as PTR? No 100% “unintentional” leaks about it on twitter, no accidental mentioning it by devs to any gaming magazine in otherwise unrelated interview? No leaked screenshots, concept arts etc? These are staples of pre-expansion hype building in MMO industry ;-)

1. Not enough of new permanent content
2. Poorly made dungeons … spliting short dungeons (except Arah) into 3 even shorter parts? Why? Poor boss mechanics, stacking, skiping of way too many trash mobs etc. They could fix it with new dungeons , they even did it right for once with Molten facility but point no. 1 :-/ They made 1 good dungeon and they removed it… I still cant believe they did it. It is simply beyond my comprehension.
3. Living story… this soap opera is as uninteresting as it can possibly be. Chapter one was basically the Power Rangers rip off with Rita Repulsa a.k.a Scarlet (they even looked same ffs) and her terribad minions vs Power Rangers… wait wait they are called Destiny’s Edge in this game. Chapter 2 is better (still boring though) but only because Chapter 1 set the bar so low. And yet it is their main focus and everything else is ignored :-/
4. Class balance vs content, same meta for too long, useless traits, useless weapon skills everywhere etc. Did they disbanded their balance team too?
5. Loot tables, rewards and almighty RNG… Blizzard did it too in Diablo 3 but they fixed it, Arenanet did not… idk why but it is one of the 5 big things they did wrong. Now combine this with being stuck with same uninteresting dungeons for 2,5 years, zerg world events and stale meta… ugh.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Interesting numbers…
highlights with my personal comentary in brackets below each point:
1. Overwhelming majority of players are old accounts a.k.a early buyers Oo Almost no new blood.
(ok this may not be true since we have no data after september 2013)
2. there is something very wrong with sPvP
(bugs, class balance, not enough game modes…. this one is obvious)
3. 72% of players do not go into dungeons regulary even tho we dont have elitist “raiding” enviroment and restrictive trinity like in other games. Something is not quite right in here either.
(number of regular visitors should be much higher. I wish there was also survey about why is majority of players uninterested in the dungeons. Also survey about how many pll go into fractal would be interesting)
4. Only 21% of players finds much of the stuff in the gem shop interesting. 75% of players finds only few things interesting. Out of 96% of players that buy or would buy something from gemshop, only average of 57% of all players ever buy something with real money.
(maybe too much “cute” junk? I would buy cool armor skin inspired by ancient or early middle ages real world models such as human/norn cultural armors or maybe new visual effects for my weapons but certainly not cute quagan backpack or mini chicken)
Are we going down this path again Gidorah?
Chris
Nah. By now, nobody actually expects you guys to talk with us about it.
But even if you did, an entire CDI on it would be overkill.
Personally I think a CDI on the BLT would be good to do at some point.
Chris
It should be two separate CDI. One for the gem store. One for the part where players are trading stuff with each other. Stuff like the very obvious missing/broken bits in the search function. The two are different enough that they shouldn’t be discussed together.
I somewhat agree. A CDI about the gem shop would likely revolve around definitions of P2W and vertical item progression. We have discussed that amongst ourselves already and the only pertinent information Arenanet could offer is their own definitions. Personally, I think providing those definitions is necessary. Suspense is all well and good in story telling but not in the monetization of storytelling.
Hello Chris Whiteside and thank you for the response. Would you be able to describe the process the dev team used in deciding upon the next topic? I’m not looking for a gotcha moment, just think it would help in the process of mutual emulation. Knowing how the dev team chooses topics would help us choose future topics.
Say what?? You want us to chose topics that ANet wants to talk about instead of topics that we want to talk about. How sycophantic can you be? The whole idea of this thing is for players to be able to bring up topics and idea/complaints/suggestions that are important to us … irrespective of what ANet thinks. Not that any of that has worked, of course, but still …
Cactus… entire forum is here for expressing our ideas, complains and suggestions. 99% of topics have no respons from devs which is fine since nobody can read everything but there are also highly popular topics with several hundred pages with no response and even whole forum sections (namely “dungeons”) with no Anet response whatsoever. It has clearly no point to talk about something ,that Anet doesnt want to talk about. Lets not waste time by talking about something that would be swiped under rug after end of the particular CDI.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Why not do it like in other games?
1. bad dungeons (boring bosses, too short, too many exploits, too many bugs, too old ffs)
2. Scarlet and everything that has something to do with her cliche and boring story line
3. insane RNG
4. too many class bugs (ranger pet… rly?)
5. zerker meta in PvE (yea I can go soldier/cleric and not as well be in the dungeon since my DPS is meaningless and nobody would even notice if I went AFK).
6. zerg open world content…. whole personal story is you you you you are the hero you this you that you help saving the world you you you. Once you get into open world… you are just one of the 150+ Joes dps-ing some random wurm disturbed by Anet version of Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers for whatever meh reason devs can imagine.
woot they even resemble each other visually
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
Not in this game and if they ever make anything, it would be temporary stuff like MF.
btw MF was THE best dungeon in this game…. such irony.
1. no limit for length of posts but there should be warning at the end of the OP that walls of text may be ignored (posts with more than cca XY words).
2. Anet should pick all CDI topics because it is clear that Anet does not care about many things that we actually do care about. Best example is the “Dungeons” subforum. Hundreds of discussions, thousands of posts, good suggestions, valid points of concern etc…. but no response from Anet whatsoever. Why waste time of participants on both sides by talking about topic which has won by vote but at the end will be ignored and forgotten by Anet. Therefore every topic should be picked by Anet.
new dungeons with fun mechanics like cobalt worm, or that big robot in “whatever” fractal etc. etc.
So warrior, mesmer and necromancer walked into a bar and warrior asked “when is the event starting?” … but nobody answered becuase they were all in different overflows.
1. Customizable UI
2. Customizable skill bars
3. LFG tool ingame
4. Dual talent specialization (ou yea different traits for pve and WvWvW)
5. overall less RNG
Having knockback/knockdown mechanic in game isn’t that bad if it is accompanied with diminishing return which sadly in case of GW2 is not. Creatures can lock players in stunlock forever like pre-BC rogues in WoW. Once you lie on the ground with your belly up or down and your stunbreaker in on CD and there are more than one enemy with cb/cd it is gg and there is nothing you can do about it. And even if you didn’t die or get downed you are still not in control of your character which is not fun.
For demonstration: look at attached picture below for 4 seconds and rate how big fun you had during those 4 seconds… now repeakitten 3 times.
Great…
Now for more accurate simulation of rapidly decreasing health of your character wait until you will have to go pee. Wait until your urge to pee will be so strong that you subconsciously cross your legs….. and now stare at attached picture another 10 seconds and rate how much fun you had.
Well… you can go
a) condition build (need new gear tho) which if fun because you have to press a lot of buttons and swap weapons often + pet management. But you have to be the only one with condi build in your group (shared bleed cap + shared poisons QQ).
b) beastmaster bunker build and do laughable damage BUT never ever EVER die unless you go afk or alt+tab (even in yellow zerk gear).
c) all range build and do “ok” damage BUT everyone with range weapon will outdamage you anyway (even GS warriors with 0 rifle/bow traits will do better at range if they swap to rifle/bow).
I would say hybrid between A and B because it is fun to press all them buttons all the time and rarely die. Your damage tho will be still inferior to anyone else who is not afk or terribad at game.
There are tons of builds of all 3 types for rangers with minor differences between them. I suggest you use youtube and filter the most recent ones since they offer not only trait examples but also gear advices and tips how to use their build more or less properly.
PS: oh and I almost forgot one final build
d) Spirit support build. Go this and you will be kicked from every half decent group superfast.
(edited by Brahmincorle.1264)
1. knockdown – you can be best PvE player in the universe but once you are locked in knockdown sequence – you are dead and there is nothing you can do about it. I hate loosing control over my character for too long and this is exactly what is every other monster in dungeon about. Knockback and watching my toon lying on the ground FOREVER. Enough is enough.
2. Reward system. Rewards doesn’t scale with difficulty – best example is CoF p1 versus p2 or even worst p3. Same reward for 15 min. run as for 1h run. WTF.
3. Class balance. I have lvl 80 Warrior, lvl 80 necro and lvl 80 ranger. I cankittenand kitten every single dungeon and path as my full zerk warrior and be king of the dps, total damage done and healing done in same time Oo At the other hand my warrior is useless in sPvP and close to useless in WvWvW. My necro can do good both in PvE and PvP but my ranger suck everywhere except WvWvW zerg.
3. Builds. Currently there are only 2 viable PvE specs for warrior (both zerk btw), 2 for necro and 0 for rangers (they all suck compared to my other toons). There is no reason whatsoever to wear tanking or healing gear. You can not outheal monsters in dungeons as “healer” and you will die just slightly later (1 hit) than zerk warr if you wear tank gear but your dps is 0 compared to zerks.
4. Spawn windows (world bosses). Since there are online tools for tracking their spawn times. There is no reason to have this in game. Standing idle and waiting for boss is not fun. I know it will spawn within 30 minutes, shock effect is just not present… oh wait it is. Seeing 40 afk lvl 80s waiting for worm to pop out from the ground is kinda shocking
