Let me try to explain to you (“dude”) what the OP and others were referring to. Follow closely because you seem to have difficulty with this stuff. Let’s say that you are a member of Ferguson’s Crossing in Tier 8 and you are normally fighting Sorrow’s Furnace there. Somebody from Sorrow’s Furnace either gets a second account and rolls an additional character on Ferguson’s Crossing, or he temporarily transfers one of his characters to Ferguson’s Crossing. He tags along with one of your teams when you capture Durios in EB. As soon as the tower flips to Ferguson’s Crossing he starts building five ballistas inside the tower on the ground right behind the gate using supplies from the depot there. The ballistas are useless, he wastes the depot supply building them, you and the rest of your team cannot build anything within 500 units, and if he keeps it up the tower never gets upgraded. No defensive cata behind the gate, no defensive arrow carts on the wall, and possibly not even anything on the supply shed … nothing within 500 units. He does all of this simply because his real allegiance is to Sorrow’s Furnace, not Ferguson’s Crossing.

It’s sabotage, not defense, and there is no way to stop it. You can’t even kill the unwanted siege since as far as ANet is concerned it was built by a member of your own team. If you still don’t understand please don’t bother replying.

I’m guessing you haven’t tried “guesting” yet. While you are guesting to another server, you cannot participate in World versus World for that world; you will be moved back to your home world. You should try and it won’t hurt your currency or account.

And these have been here for at least 12 hours with nobody touching them (several of us baby sat them for hours to make sure nobody refreshed them).

Because of all this useless siege, we are at the siege cap on the map and cannot build more to defend towers or assault anything.

Btw there is plenty more that I couldn’t fit in one screencap.

That is kitten crappy. But like another poster said above, some players will cheat if they can and 50$ for a 2nd account is nothing to some people. If you ever played Shadowbane or EVE, you’d know what incredible lengths players will go to spy and cheat.

Now, how much does it affect game play? Sometimes not much but some times a lot. Like, why did they remove orbs? Wasn’t because of balance it was because of all the cheating.

What I mostly see is full supply depots empty by worthless upgrades just before a serious assault is going to happen, especially on garrison or hills.

=> though GW2 WvW is well done, it has its flaws and it can feel very repetitive. Players will take breaks because of this and PvE or play other games

=> It should be a fact to everyone that the current GW2 population cannot support a 24/7 T1 round the clock near full population for 3 servers. And since the players in T1 all fight well, population matters a lot, that is how WvW is designed.

But I guess in a month when SoS or SoR start winning that everyone will come with lots of ideas as to how and why, when it will just be because enough JQ players are taking a break or SoS/SoR players came back , etc. etc. Because, you know, there can’t possible be great WvWers on all 3 servers, someone must be ‘best’ and it must be on the ‘winning’ server <rolls eyes>

IMO, players should focus on the good fights, not the points.

Big fights are what WvW is about but I can agree with arguments that WvW should also somehow promote medium and small scale fights. I think these were supposed to happen at supply camps but the maps just aren’t big enough (smaller fights do happen at them but not as often as you’d hope/think. But that is where you can get some fun GvG). Plus teh maps tend to funnel players. So, WvW could use some changes that could help.

Fine, replace the word “culling” in my post with “asset load time” and then go back and write an actual reply to me. You know, like a human in a conversation.

RENDERING ==> client side
CULLING ==> server side

Asset load time is client side, you are discussing rendering which is a client side operation. Textures, models, etc. affect client side rendering and your rig quality will improve rendering.

Culling is when the server isn’t sending you information on nearby allies or enemies. It looks like you have 15 friendlies nearby when you really have 40+ nearby. Looks like 20 enemies when it is really 40+. You can notice this when many enemies are dieing to just a few allies, or vice versa. It is not 1337 skill taking place but server side culling.

Combined in this issue is lag where you hit ability buttons and nothing happens for a few seconds, or you are running away yet somehow still being hit by the AOE you just ran from.

What is outrageous is how nothing they have done has made it any better, it just changes who is getting culled which is ultimately a useless ‘fix’. The code is clearly very bad and they don’t know how to fix it. This is evident by how the big WvW patch keeps getting pushed back. Here’s hoping the code rewrite works.

What really angers me is that this is known technology that you’d think a game which was supposedly designed for large fights, would have properly planned for and implemented. PS2 suffers even worse from bad code. These days, devs are far too in love with their models and textures, rather than well thought out code that runs the game well. Sometimes a java library doesn’t cut it, you actually have to, you know, code something streamlined for your game.

The question needs to be asked, “Is JQ truly a North American server?”

Maybe WvW needs to be restricted to say 6:00 a.m. – midnight Pacific.

That’s 18 hours of potential game play and 6 hours to rest.

If this is inconvenient for players outside the North American time zones, then their own regional servers would be available.

This is actually the only viable solution. WvW should really be restricted to 16-18 hours of play, based US or EU sets of servers. It has its problems but I think that overall it would help make WvW better.

For instance, it would immediately make a number of servers much more competitive.

Great fights all around. People need to stop worrying about ‘the score’. It’s about PvP and wrt to that, there have been some great large and small fights all week. Wish we could have a rematch next week but I somehow doubt their new system will comply.

The only thing that could make this week better is if they magically fixed culling and lag.

Surreal big fights

This isn’t a pro or con about culling changes, just a funny observation.

I have been in multiple large fights where it seems like nearly everyone I was running/fighting with were dead or downed, and 20+ enemies were still standing. Yet they weren’t pushing into/onto us, to finish us off.

And then slowly more and more friendlies would ‘appear’, as we continue to fight on. It is a very different kind of experience/PvP fights in GW2, haha. This is better than when it seemed like we had won and you’d move in and … doh! Enemy reinforcements have materialized!

WvW: caverns

I think WvW could use caverns. 1 per server map. 15 per side, per map (so 15v15v15). or maybe 10v10v10, I wouldn’t go as high as 20v20v20 though. A place for smaller, more group oriented fights. A larger sPvP map with WvW gear, basically.

They start up and you fight until a side wins (caps some objective) and then that provides a bonus to that server for 30 minutes (cavern locks, get bonus, like 3% to power).

You could even weight the fight based on the current WvW scores, 2nd in scoring gets some cavern bonus like 3% to damage while 3rd gets 3% to damage and toughness. Though that is debatable.

Qing for it is something I am not sure about. Should give 5-man grps first entry, then grps, followed by soloers. Only less active servers probably not a big issue but on tier 1/2 fights, could be a real clash for who wants in during prime time. Egos always like to forum rant.

You are asking for a game that cannot happen again. Those kind of players don’t exist anymore. No one is going to stand for a small group AOEing everyone to death ever again.


Instead, ask for a place where 5-man grps can do battle with enemies in ways that affect WvW. PS1 had caverns, WvW could also have caverns. 15 max per side, win the cavern and you provide bonuses to your topside brethren for, say, 30 minutes.

3 caverns that can be locked for 30 minutes at a time. Each providing some bonus like 5% power boost… whatever. Something useful but not OP. And a place to fight enemy groups on a smaller scale. If you want smaller than that you sPvP.

Imo, they should grant 25% speed to everyone (passively) and allow people to create deeper builds with the freed skill slot.

This would work. I actually want more slots since PvP choices seem kinda limited in GW2.

Who didn’t run with 33% speed increases all the time? I’d slot stuff and run the right weapons so I’d always be fast on any character. To not do so is gimping yourself in open world fighting.

The 25% passive actually opens up possibilities for different builds.

==> And they allow low level characters to have 25% speed, which is what I think most ganking thieves dislike

WvW will buy gems to convert to gold because PvPers are competitive and you need gold for upgrades, siege and even buying gear.

Most PvPers don’t like to PvE.

Thus crappy loot in WvW keeps em all poor so they have to buy gold.

It is annoying. I don’t care if it takes 3x as long as in PvE, we should be able to get all the gear just battling in WvW. The reason is simple, if not, players eventually quit. I know I will if a gear gap starts to get large. GW2 is fun but it isn’t worth PvEing for.

The suggestions are all off. The is no problem with large fights but there is a lack of smaller fights.

First, in DAoC you weren’t capping forts all the time. Much of the time was fooling around just fighting in Emain or wherever. The maps are too small for this, they focus/funnel players too much.

You didn’t need rewards either, people fought because it was fun.

Anyways, I’d do something similar to what Planetside 1 had. Another area for smaller battles that provided various bonuses for your empire. It would be where the groups and the well geared soloers would go to have competitive fights that affected WvW. As is, you can’t really remake the current WvW maps.

[edit: I also think 5 man grps here are lazy. In DAoC, we’d roam all over for quite a long time search for good fights. We’d avoid zergs with scouting info and seek out the other groups for some epic fights or hit the zergs on the flanks when they fought other zergs. Basically, don’t think you should just get instant fights and rewards just because you 5-man]

Culling not Fixed

I really enjoy GW2 but this issue lasting for months is disturbing.

50 v 50 or less should be NO PROBLEM. That is what makes of most up of the fights. That has been done before and with today’s machines being faster than ever, I have no idea why a decent PC isn’t seeing at least a good percentage of approaching enemies. How solo players or small groups remain hidden is quite simply unforgiveable. This is bad code and they seem to not know how to fix it.

100+ v 100+ in an area and some are not showing up, I could understand. As is, this game seems 5+ years behind the times. Considering how well the rest of the game functions, I can only guess that they made some really poor design choices.

Time to do a big overhaul because it is clear that the current system cannot be fixed.

Yes. I am on a good server, by which I mean a good community that is (luckily) competitive as well.

Not as much as DAoC but it is a very nice feeling to have once again.

I think take them away because I think scouting is a fun and important part of any strategic MMO/game. The map is already pretty small and the swords just make knowing where to go so easy mode.

It is all part of dumbing down game play, a terrible trend over the past 10 years.

You can get an exotic off the trader with minimal effort, yet to get an orange invader is hours and hours of WvW. Even if you run in a grp slaughtering it takes a lot of time. I don’t get why it is such a big discrepency. If ascended pieces eventually get bought with these I will rage a little.

I didn’t know they had done this but I think it is helping.

I say that because I popped onto my alt since my server is crushing. I felt like I was doing pretty well and surviving much better than I remembered, which to me seemed odd since everyone should be more geared than months back. My alt was lvl 15. It isn’t like being an 80 in exotics, of course. But I didn’t feel overly wimpy.

You have to take a number of things into consideration first.

=> how much time will I spend gearing up? Will I use all the food and buffs available, all the time? etc.

Some want to just jump into WvW and also not worry about the ‘extras’. If that is you, don’t consider a solo class/build. And choose something that is ranged, you let others tank as you dps. Use siege as often as possible. Of course, eventually you will get geared up but all the bells and whistles that make for an effective roamer aren’t everyone’s cup-o-tea to keep up 24/7. If you buy a lot of gold/gems, you can do it once you hit 80 but if you can’t, be prepared to PvE a bit first if you want to solo around or small grp fight on a regular basis.

=> all-around fighter or more specialized?
I think warriors are a great all-around character, you can roam, small grp fight and charge into zergs (as well as very good zerg support with banners and the horn). This only takes weapon and skill changing, rather than build/gear changes. The downside to warrior (IMO) is the lack of ‘neat/cool abilities’. Guardians are also very good all-around. Siege is a warrior’s friend at keep sieges. Mesmers, as mentioned before, are probably the best all-around class. But they are not for everyone.

=> The solo/small grp: these get mentioned a lot, as you can tell from previous posts. Players say these classes/builds are effective in keep fights or zerg fights but I consider them sub par, except the Mesmer. They only seem to do well because these players are typically decked out. But if you compared a bunker D/D Ele to a beserker Staff Ele in a big fight, you’d see that the staff Ele is putting out far great damage and much more CC.

=> Keep fights, open field zerg battles: obviously AOE damage or boons or heals help win these. Staff Ele, Necros (not certain on build), Guardians… That and siege. If you are low level or in a solo build, just use siege when you can, best way to level up while getting badges.

=> Classes with choices: Want to switch around and try different builds out? (note: this usually means different gear sets) Not all classes have interesting trait mixes and various differentiating weapon abilities. And I haven’t tried all the classes so can’t say for sure. Warriors don’t seem to have as many choices as a Necro or Elem.

=> Play style: melee classes take constant movement to stay on targets. I find it fun but also tiring after awhile. So I play two classes now and find I play my ranged class more and more because, frankly, it is tough to play melee in big fights.

I haven’t mentioned engineer because I haven’t tried one and hardly ever see one in WvW. The few that I have seem like a they do well but they are probably very good players that would shine if the had made a thief or whatever else.

If anet thinks this is a PvP/WvW problem, then they are wrong. They already have designed WvW to favor the zerg by a large margin.

Population is always a problem in 24/7 PvP. As for the comment on 3 factions not helping, 3 factions are definitely better than 2 but if one of the 3 is fielding next to no one, it is basically a 2 faction fight.

Transfers have made for many an imbalanced 3 server fight.

Also, week to week populations naturally go up and down and yet people seem to freak out about it. Sometimes the big guilds need a week off.

Its a fact that there are more players who spend their time PvEing as opposed to PvPing. This has always been the case and has only grown since WoW. A big part of it is that PvE is more social in the sense that you can chat and have fun chatting while PvEing with guildmates and friends. Understandably, most just don’t have the desire to be battling every hour they are online.

But note that many who PvE would not play a MMO without PvP elements. Most players want to compete against other players, just not all the time. Thus the trend towards greater PvE focus with just enough PvP stuff to keep players satisfied. Which of course leaves the 80+% PvP playing player base eternally dissatisfied but that is just how the way the world works. And all the smaller MMOs which try to cater to this smaller market end up getting hacked, exploited and cheated into oblivion (totally sucks).

I love reading the mindset that seems to say…“If I die, it must be the class, cause its surely not me…therefore all classes but mine should be nerfed”

Those mindsets permeate gaming forums.

They make me laugh.

Eh, don’t simplify. I think most here have played an OP class and an underpowered one. You can tell from playing when something is strong or weak, and whether it takes skill to pull off. If many players start running the same build, it is because it is strong and also easy to play. In fact, you can balance just by doing a statistical analysis of the player base/chars/builds. It is that simple. Not all players try to min/max but everyone can tell what works and doesn’t work, and will always migrate to what is working best.

What is always nice to see is someone who really understands the game and their class and has a build that is not the norm yet is still very effective.

And a well built GvG PvP group is always great to watch in action. I often find it hard to tell what they are doing to kill and survive since the combat logs are pretty lacking.

Easy gear+build swapping

It seems in all aspects of GW2 that I pretty much want at least 2 armor sets and two builds, if not more. The problem is switching them around, which is very annoying.

Rift had ROLES which allowed for easy switching around of builds and it was great. You could have your bread and butter build + some others + an experiment. It was fun and added a lot to that game.

I would really enjoy that gaming element here in GW2. even if I have to go up to a NPC to do it, to be able to switch into a pre-set armor+build would be great.

Certain Thief and Ele builds are strong. They need adjustment.

In Thief’s case, I need culling fixed first so I can see how much that helps then go from there, though I am fairly certain I know what mechanics need changing.

In Ele’s case it is about the combination of gear, food and such with D/D build(s) that allows for solid damage and the ability to heal and also escape/run.

In the grand scheme of WvW, they aren’t all that strong but in 1v1 they are. I don’t think monstrously so, I will say that the thief is much more annoying than greatly OP.

=> ANET should do some tweaking but all devs in all MMOs seem only capable of crippling nerfs. Something I do not understand. Slight modification of a couple abilities can change a build’s dynamic by a noticeable margin yet most devs make changes as if they were just hired and never played the game they are working on.

I never used food and I did just fine really even against others using food buffs.

But do tell what is this change?

I have encountered this covenn fellow before (mostly in WAR) and can safely say wrt Covenn,

“Min/maxing is a religion, to do otherwise is sacrilegious. There is only one perfection, a single way to have fun. Believe or die.” (hmmm, that could be sig worthy)

But he does know the ins and outs of a game and won’t lie about something when it is OP or weak. Unlike so many who pretend to want good game play yet blindly defend something they use for easy wins/kills.

So I am glad I clicked this thread, was about to buy a bunch of those. Will have to wait and see.

Thanks, that link is perfect. As for my build, I build to what my gear provides (currently). Then go from there. I have heard about using karma for Aurora’s event but have yet to try it. I might just buy gems and buy what I can off the TP. I need the gold for other stuff as well (upgrades, siege, food). Might be the ideal choice to support the game and avoid as much PvE as possible.

I took a break and after a few months I am back and just got my 2nd char to 80.

I basically WvW. I am pretty much broke or near broke all the time. On my first char I did Orr event grinding to get gold for exotics (very boring).

I don’t really care about Ascended, I guess someday they will add them to WvW. I can use exotics until then.

So I have the yellow Invaders and wondering what is the best way to get exotics now? Is it still gold grinding? And badges still seem to be a pretty slow way to get gold invaders. And no idea where to get a high level breather or backpack thing. heh


I noticed a thread on food and bought some of that Ghost omnom stuff, which definitely makes a noticeable difference.

Any other obvious tips on anything like that? Even store stuff, I usually don’t bother but I play the game enough that I would like to support it beyond just purchasing it. So if some items on there actually help in WvW, please let me know.

I think the problem is that you don’t see what effect you are having on the overall WvW goal of taking and holding objectives. Plus, I also get the feeling you don’t like to be jumped by 2+ and die, which is part of WvW risk. In WvW, it is all about risk and choices. make the right choices, you ‘win’. You and your opponent make the right choices and its a fight, where they may best you.

It is not everyone’s cup of tea, the fact that you can fail. But that kind of risk is the only reason I play.

Good, took awhile for a fairly standard technique, but at least it is finally here.

And you could make them stick figures for all I care, as long as I can see them/target them. That would be somewhat humorous, a big wall of charging stick figures. Give em all axes for max effect.

Doesn’t matter want race you pick as far as ‘abilities and power’ go.

So pick the one you like to look at or listen to, or both. I actually went with a Norn.

In WvW/PvP small is usually slightly better but not a big deal unless you want to move up the ladder in sPvP.

Emhry is a great server. It is a shame that numbers 24/7 matter so much in WvW ranks.

WvW need to be fun for "losers" too.

There are a number of things the devs could do when outmanned buff becomes active (some have been listed here). This is an area where they have failed at since some things they could do would be very easy, a little helpful and at least help me by showing they understand that it is a problem that they are working on.


Question: someone above said outmanned magic find helps badge drop rate? I have read in the past that magic find does not help badge drop rate?
