It is not mandatory to do the Daily so I don’t see where’s the problem?
Nothing in the game is mandatory. However, if you’d like some ascended gear and you are not a crafter, for instance, then you’ll be getting your ascended gear more slowly since dailies including required crafting will exclude non-crafters.
The laurels don’t begin to be awarded until Feb.
Yeah, January’s update was announced as being a small one compared to the ones coming. It’s why they decided to call it Flame & Frost: Prelude since it’s only a prelude to what is to come.
Why? What happened?
Most likely what I will do is make 10 pieces of food for this daily since that’ll be the cheapest and least wasteful way for me to do this. I wonder if there’ll be a rash of unneeded crafted items appearing on the TP.
I kind of feel badly for the non-crafters that want to work toward a piece of ascended gear, however. They’ll have to forego this daily each week.
Perhaps I’m missing something here, but why would having a rich orichalcum vein in Southsun Cove be a bad thing exactly? I don’t understand. There are other rich veins of ore scattered around the world that people mine regularly, or did those all get removed, too?
Yes, I’d buy an expansion as of right now. Unless the game were to become excessively grindy or too blatant of a cash shop grab in the coming months, I would likely enjoy seeing something new in Tyria such as Cantha or Elona.
After what happened to TOR, I seriously doubt anyone can really predict the success or failure of ESO, especially this early on. We already know that being able to make and sell single player games does not automatically mean MMOs can be done equally well. A company that makes buggy games will likely produce a buggy MMO and many MMO players in general are not all that forgiving of bugs.
Congrats early on your 100% map completion. I’m working on mine for my engineer and all I have left is 2 WvW maps. So close…
I disagree. I have encountered non-legendary crafting recipes that are quite the grind for me to complete. I may choose to do that grind or I may not, but it is still going to be a grind for me regardless.
But what exactly is on the other side? It seems like in MMOs you end up grinding so that you can grind. (grinding for better gear so you can grind for better gear).
When it comes to gear, I agree with you. MMOs often give a player a grind whose purpose is to outfit you for a raid which will ultimately result in better gear so you can then use that better gear to grind for the next set of good gear. In this way, the gear grind seems endless for the life of the game.
The particular grind I’m referring to involves crafting, so I could actually grind my way to my goal and get to the other side if I chose to. At least until Anet releases another set of recipes with ridiculously high amounts of rare materials. lol
This sounds like a lot of fun. I’d love to see individual zones in the world get some attention and reasons to draw players in. The rewards should be really good, though, for the final event, say. No more of these blues and greens from a big fancy chest.
Perhaps it’s another cookie cutter “There is no grind in GW2” thread. They always go hand-in-hand with any thread mentioning game grind.
Also, not all grind concerns cosmetic appearances.
Agreed. Having a way to sit properly in a chair would be very cool.
I don’t believe so, no. But I think it’s been stated that there will be a reward system of some kind in the future regarding ahcievement points.
Care to share, then?
I already did. Please read the above posts.
Things done in repetition only become a ‘grind’ when you stop enjoying them.
Play the game to have fun. Novel concept I know. It’s about the fun. Start having it.
I do play GW2 in order to have fun. I’m currently having fun overall. However, that doesn’t mean that in the course of my having fun, I haven’t encountered what I consider a grind. I agree that “grinding” as used in games implies not having as much as fun as you would if the grind wasn’t there. I can choose to leave off meeting my goals once I realize a grind will be involved or I can work through the grind. My choice.
It is, however, rather redundant to tell someone who IS already having fun that the answer to all grind is to “play the game to have fun.”
Actually, we’re not talking about the quality of the dyes that are dropping. We’re saying we’ve noticed a decrease in the overall number of dyes dropping. Whether I get rares or commons, I’m not getting as many as I did during the weeks right after launch.
I just wish I could have more than 8 favorites at a given time. lol
I’m expecting that last one as an answer to be honest. Either that or “stop working towards a goal and just have fun” etc.
What if working toward a particular goal IS your definition of having fun? Or it would be if you hadn’t encountered a grind. Sometimes, in the course of having fun in a game, grinds are encountered. When one is, the choices are to give up and find something else to do or work through the grind until you’re on the other side again.
I have wondered if the drop rate on dyes received a nerf, too. My first three characters got many more dyes during their leveling than my more recent ones. I still get them, but it’s a noticeably lower number.
I’m still not seeing any grind, I have everything I want from just playing normally and having fun.
The implication here is that because YOU personally don’t see any grind and have everything you want from casual playing, then no grind must therefore exist within the game. Perhaps you didn’t mean to imply that, but that implication was there for me. My point being, one player can feel no grind in a game while another does feel one. Both points of view are valid.
It’s my understanding that if there ever are ascended weapons (there are none as yet), legendary weapon stats will be made equal to or better than ascended stats. Is this not correct or is there some other reason legendary weapon owners will resent ascended ones?
Ah, that’s too bad. When I began playing at launch, I had this terrific character in mind for my main. I spent like an hour tweaking her looks and history, got to the naming screen and was told the name I’d chosen (we’re talking first and last name here) was already taken. I was so bummed.
Just two months ago, on a whim, I tried to make a character with that name and (amazing!) it was no longer in use. So, having my heart set on having my originial main, I immediately made my character and leveled her up and she’s now (at last!) my main. lol
I know a little at least how ya feel. Maybe you will find the same luck I did in the future.
When I wanted to use a name that I knew was taken, I had to wait 24 hours to use it once it was deleted. That was all. Are you beyond the 24 hours time?
I am curious why you want that particular mat, Is it just to have…like just because it’s there or what? You can hit 400 in JC without them at all.
I have never stated that crafting in general is a grind. Is it particularly difficult to reach 400 on any discipline? No, it’s not. It’s a relatively fast, simple, and, in my opinion, enjoyable process. It’s why I have level 400 crafting in every discipline right now. I enjoy it.
Something else I also enjoy is discovering recipes. After all, I’ve been advised repeatedly to “just play the game the way I want to” and “have fun.” Discovering recipes is one way I “have fun.” However, when it comes to the passion flower line of jewelry, my “having fun” in the game has collided with a need to farm/grind if I want to “play the game the way I want to” and “have fun.” That’s simply my point.
Could I just forget the whole thing and throw one of the ways I enjoy the game most out the proverbial window? Sure. Is anyone “forcing” me to discover all my recipes? Nope. Am I asking for the grind to be removed? Nah, though it wouldn’t break my heart any if they made the drop rate on flowers slightly higher.
The point is, in the course of “playing GW2 the way I want to” and “having fun” I have encountered what I consider a grind. I just disagree with the “there is no grind in GW2” crowd, which was my original point in bringing up the flowers in the first place.
You just can’t make the game successful by pleasing casuals because they are like women, you give them everything they want, they get bored and leave for the next big thing.
Wow, as a woman, I personally find this comment right here extremely offensive. If we’re not allowed to make racial slurs on this forum, why are we allowed to make insulting gender ones?
I agree with you. This game seems like it would be very unsatisfying to the typical hardcore gamer that is used to raiding, for example. But then, this game has never been billed as a hardcore-enticing raiding game. I don’t know if they’ll ever add raids, but even if they do it’s likely not to look like most raiding MMOs that people are familiar with.
The term grind has both a dictionary definition and a subjective player definition. People that say there is no grind in a given MMO they play are really saying that nothing they’ve done on the game to date feels like a grind. Some people could kill 5 million risen in a single stretch and think it fun while other players would feel like tearing their eyes out after the 500th one.
It doesn’t mean that the “no grind” player’s opinion is more valid than one who has, in fact, encountered grind in a given game. It also doesn’t mean that said player will never at some point in the future experience grind. They might not, but then they might. At the end of the day, “grind” as its used by most players in most forums is purely a matter of opinion and individual experience since what feels like fun to one player might feel like a grind to another and both points of view are valid.
Oh, gosh, this thread brings back memories of my fishing days in LOTRO when I got the brilliant idea of maxing out my fishing score and finishing all the deeds for it. I did eventually accomplish my goal, but it was a major grind and I never could stomach doing it ever again once I’d done everything.
Even so, I suppose fishing could be done more engagingly in this game and could be cool. I love my chef, so I would go for new fish recipes, sure.
Being able to build one’s own legendary would definitely be a cool system. I don’t honestly see many people with legendaries while I’m out playing, but I spend most of my time in the PvE zones and I don’t think most players in the lower level zones outside of Orr have them yet. I may have seen one or two of the greatsword legendaries in WvW, but I really only go out there to work on my map. lol
At the moment, I’m not planning on springing to make a legendary since doing so would involve me doing things that I would feel was a major grind no matter how many years I spent in doing them slowly. If I ever amassed enough wealth to buy one, I might consider it, but the one legendary I really want I have never seen anywhere including the trading post, so that route isn’t looking too promising, either. lol
How about some asuran crystal magic rainbow zombies? That would liven Orr up.
Guild Wars 2 is definitely a fabulous game, IMO. I’m very pleased to see how well it continues to do. There’s so much to enjoy about this game and I’m looking forward to seeing what the staff has planned for this new year.
As far as I can tell, Southsun Cove is the same as it was during the Nov. event. I kind of wish they’d tone down some of the vets out there and make certain crafting items drop more often. I’ve been farming out there lately and, on my server at least, it’s a good day if I see one other person running around.
I’m definitely a PvE player. I’ve dabbled in PvP, but mostly I play this game to relax and I find PvP in general more intense than I’d like, so yeah. PvE.
I can’t think of what grind you’re talking about if it doesn’t include legendaries, exotic gear, ascended gear, or dungeons.
My experience with grind involves a particular area of crafting. There are many casual players like myself that spend the majority to all of their gaming time in PvE and we aren’t all worried about legendaries, gear, and dungeons. However, those areas are not the only ones in GW2 where a grind can be felt.
Guild Wars 2 is only grindy for the people who feel entitled to a Legendary weapon. Now we have all these babies. I mean, getting exotic armor and weapons from dungeons isn’t a grind.
Again, my experience with grind (and many other players’) has nothing to do with legendaries, exotic gear, ascended gear, or dungeons.
Bottom line: The game does not FORCE you to kill the same mobs over and over and over to progress.
Thanks, and I hope maybe this gives some of you a reality check.
The grind I’m experiencing has nothing to do with legendaries, dungeons, fractals, or killing millions of risen. But hey, thanks for trying.
I’m still not seeing any grind, I have everything I want from just playing normally and having fun.
Maybe the complainers are just impatient.
It’s a simple concept, really. I’m a different person than you. With me so far? Therefore, my experiences are likely to be different from yours. And other players’ experiences are different from mine. Therefore, while you may not be experiencing grind in your play, others like me are. We’re not impatient. It’s a matter that some of what we enjoy in the game requires farming and/or grind at times.
Again, your experiences are not the entire sum of the whole world. It is therefore illogical to assume that since one person (you) are not experiencing grind, all the rest of the thousands of players are also not.
This is why I never talk in fractal dungeons ever…….I never type a single word. You probably said something that they didn’t agree with, or took the wrong way lol.
Yet if you say nothing and just concentrate on fighting, you get kicked for being antisocial and “unfriendly.”
I wonder if the kicking frenzy will soon mean that PUG fractals become nonexistent? After all, if people begin getting kicked 8 times out of 10, they might just decide that it’s not worth it.
I believe he would if there were level 80 centaurs over there to make it worth his while.
Finishing my passion flower recipes does indeed require a grind.
A lot of players get their kicks by griefing others. It’s unfortunate but true. Sorry this happened to you. In a game like this, there just isn’t any justice for griefing, which is a lot of why people do it, other than that they are just bad people in general.
I’d be speaking for myself and only myself if I were you, Arjeidi. I’m a member of the Guild Wars 2 Community and I’d never say anything like this to someone.
Dradiin, you sound frustrated. I’ve experienced some frustration myself. All MMOs have some amount of grind and GW2 is better than a lot, I think, but it’s still here. Everyone has a point at which repetition becomes boring and having fun becomes a grind. For me, one of those points is crafting with passion flowers. lol
I’m not sure what the answer is. Grind keeps some folks busy, so MMOs employ it for this reason. I guess the issue is about balance. Has a game balanced grindy moments with other more engaging moments so that the good outweights the bad. This point, too, often varies by player.
I’ve leveled a lot of characters and I’ve always found that the fastest way to level is to do more than 1 starting zone, which is what you don’t want to do. If you don’t mind parking your character in their particular zone for a while, you can catch extra DEs and they help with leveling, but this approach is not what I consider fast.
Another possiblity is to craft early on, which will give you more levels quickly, but that involves farming resources or buying them off the TP, which is fine if you have some coin to work with. Or perhaps a few friends would be willing to run around with you so you can get things done faster and get more kills in general.
So the group can get their “Kick a party member” achievement done, perhaps?
Yeah, there are a few hearts that involve bringing the person something, but these are much fewer in GW2 than most MMOs and they don’t involve covering the whole region to do it. Distance is much less than an entire region and often the item you’re carrying includes a skill with a speed buff.
Almost all the NPCs will talk to you about something if you click on them. Many are quite funny, too. The thing I hate about traditional quests are the immersion-breaking icons floating over their heads and even worse, the boring slog from one side of a map to the other just to hand in my 10 sticks of firewood or whatever. Such a waste of time.
I’m wondering if my engineer will get another nerf soon because if she does, I’ll be scarred. You know, for life. lol
